Reviews of Essex Rose Tea Room Dedham
h.
Very friendly and polite service at this classic English Tea Room in Constable Country. Late on Saturday afternoon (arrived 4.15pm) they still served some of the best (fresh baked same day) scones we’ve tasted for afternoon tea with clotted cream and Tiptrees preserves. Good value at under £8 per person.
R. T.
Lovely traditional tea room serving good food whether main meals or cakes etc. Situated in the heart of the village and ideal for either beginning or end of a walk around the village and countryside with some refreshments.
K. U.
Really sweet traditional tea room specialising in Wilkin & Sons Tiptree products. The staff were so friendly and engaging and made sure we were acknowledged and treated us very well. The cream tea option is particularly good as they give you two large scones.
D. L.
Great tea room with brilliant selection of lunches and cream teas. They even had a gluten free scone for my wife which was totally unexpected.
Fair price, lovely service and good quality food

We find this places by convinced,Very friendly and polite service at this classic English Tea Room in Constable Country, unfortunately bake were not fresh, that’s a bit disappointing.
I. C.
Service was fair, we were seated and given menus fairly quickly, we did have to wait for a table but were extremly pleased with the cleaning of it before we were seated (above and beyond for covid19). The food was delicious, the toasties were perfect and so was the ploughman. The only downside is they ran out of jackpotatos (at 1pm) and the jacket potato we did get was a bit cold and needed to be offered with butter. Other than that would totally recomend especially as they cater to Gluten Free people.
B. S.
Very friendly staff and beautiful location and tea room. They were quite busy on the day we went but had a lovely afternoon tea.
R. “. H.
This is an excellent tea room. Serving breakfast lunch and of course afternoon teas. A cosy place with both seating and outside area for those who like to dine all fresco. Service is excellent and fast food is clean and very tasty. An excellent tea room just what you want as you visit a great village.

It was my first visit to this tea room even though I live fairly locally. My sister was staying at an Airbnb nearby so we met for a coffee. They allow dogs which is a massive plus for me.
We had tea cakes and lattes which were lovely and hot and tasty.
The atmosphere is lovely and although the staff were busy were very pleasant and friendly. There are lots of Tiptree Jam products on sale in here too.
Highly recommended.

I rang about a week ago to place an order for 8x takeaway afternoon teas, unfortunately Saturdays are the busiest so wouldn't be able to accommodate more than a table at a go. It was absolutely fine not an issue as we sat on the Green by the lake. Lots of scummy sandwiches and yummy cakes and the scones were huge! Thank you Eleanor and Co. It was never too much trouble, and I added on a last-minute extra afternoon tea, without a hitch. Price is fair.
J. F.
I visited here with my daughter and 2 grandchildren aged 6 and 4 for lunch.
Very nice accomodating staff..
sandwiches for the children were made to their liking and served with a smile.
M. C.
Great place for a spontaneous Afternoon Tea. Great selection of sandwiches & drinks, clean and tidy Tea Room
K. G.
Lovely cream tea and staff are friendly. Service was quite slow considering there were only a couple of tables.
C. B.
Quaint tea room Warm friendly atmosphere and staff. Jacket potatoes are yummy and the cakes are even more yummy!! You can also buy wilkin and sons jam, marmalade or curd or flavoured gin which I can highly recommend!! A great place to have lunch or a cream tea.
D. S.
Lovely food, great atmosphere, reasonably priced. Been here multiple times, the cakes are divine
M.
Had afternoon tea. Amazing cakes and sandwiches. Staff could not have been more accommodating and really friendly and you get the feel that they are proud to work there. Absolutely loved this place
D. M.
Great food, and some lovely art available for sale on their walls. Worth a visit.
P. C.
Lovely afternoon tea, coffee and cold drinks, With some delicious cakes and friendly service,
H. P.
The toasted sandwiches were really nice. The coffee and cakes - delicious!! Staff was amazing (you may even think one of the servers looks like Nick Jonas!) and the tea room itself was quite nice - a charming place to enjoy a light meal. Highly recommend if you're in Dedham!
F. E.
I loved it when I came her with my mother and sister. The food is delicious and the drinks are great too. The building has a very nice atmosphere and the paintings on the wall are quite nice. Very nice staff members as well.
A. P.
A must visit for afternoon tea lovers. Excellent food, staff and service. Loved the ambience and the atmosphere.
M. E.
Had a pot of tea for 2. Partner had chocolate cake and I had a scone with jam and cream it was lovely. Staff are really nice and friendly can't wait to go back
T. R.
Fast service and excellent quality sandwiches and cream tea! Ideal for small groups and ideally located after or before a walk!
R. J.
Tiptree Tea Room at The Essex Rose, Dedham lovely tea room , lovely staff and great food. Arrive early before 12 as gets busy and will have to wait
m. v.
Lovely little tea room. Cream tea was amazing. Very clean and freindly staff. Have a good selection of Tiptree produce.
S. M.
Friendly service, tasty breakfast in a cute location. Deffo worth pre booking
S. H.
One of the best lunches we’ve had in yonks. Travelling back to London, we nipped off the A12 in need of something tasty and better than the junk found by the roadside.
This is a really trad café - great service and really delicious food. The quiche of the day was superb and served with lovely new potatoes and homemade coleslaw. The coffee was great and we decided to share some scones afterwards - delicious!
Despite being rushed off their feet due to staff shortages, the team were lovely and actually the wait wasn’t too long. 2 hours’ free parking just over the road too.
P. H.
Service slow and had to be prompted a few times. The food was mostly good - tea lovely but coffee and cakes a little phoned in
D. G.
Absolutely love tea rooms, especially Tiptree ones but unfortunately this was just average maybe even below which pains me to say. The service was very friendly and I want to say that at the outset. However the scones were dry and cold which was a big disappointment. No one came to ask if everything was ok unfortunately.
Also think cleanliness is a bit of an issue here, toilets were not clean, bin strangely placed in front of cake fridge door, trays stacked on the floor leaning against a cupboard and I had to wipe off a ton of crumbs on my cushioned seat before we sat down.
A. S.
a picturesque tea room in the village of Dedham. delicious breakfasts using Tiptree products. friendly and efficient service too!
D. M.
Lovely breakfast and excellent service. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
B. H.
Warm coffee, unhappy breakfast and staff non attentive. Shame. We had our second coffee at craft centre opposite
D. J.
We had the good fortune to stop off at the Essex Rose Tea Rooms which is as traditional as it comes with tasty food to eat but for me it scored 5 stars because the waitress had us in stitches from start to finish. A good laugh is the best medicine! 🙂
a. h.
Very nice traditional tea room with good service
E. “. S.
Excellent! It is very authentic and the scones are tasty, all at a reasonable price.
t. m.
This is such a busy pretty little tea room in the middle of Dedham and i have always loved coming here...
Before Covid times i have had some nice vegan meals...but when i visited a few weeks ago....i was not able to get anything....
Even a basic jacket potato with beans( hardly exciting) wasnt available...
In this day and age, where there are more recognised vegetarians and vegans, it was disappointing...
The woman at the till said she would come and tell us if there was anything they could do....she never came! Shame!
M. P.
We went for a birthday celebration and had afternoon tea. Lovely food, friendly service. Good value for money.
l. a.
Broccoli and Stilton quiche was utterly tasteless.
Expensive for what it is.
Wouldn't return
O. E.
Lovely afternoon tea, fair price and quick service. Had a great time here would recommend to anyone.
S. M.
Went here for a cream tea, we arrived not long before closing so didn't expect a lot, but the staff was brilliant, and looked after us very well, they didn't enforce any mask wearing... it was great all round Thank you 😊
S. B.
Very friendly staff with good quality tea and cake. And they allowed my dog in too which amazing as not many places in Essex do.
r. s.
Had lovely Tiptree cream tea , and good atmosphere
C. M.
Beautiful cozy place to have lunch. The food is amazing. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There have some incredible pieces of artwork for sale in there too. I would highly recommend a visit
W. G.
Lovely tearooms with outside seating and nice variety on the menu.
D. N.
This is a good tea room with lovely staff and good service (which was friendly, and pretty efficient too!). There were four of us in our group and we all had cream teas. The jams were delicious and the tea was tasty too, the only issue we all had was that the scones were a bit dry when you bit into a bit that hadn't been covered in cream and jam! Very good experience otherwise and the cream tea wasn't badly priced either.
A. W.
Cost tearoom, professional friendly staff, dog friendly. Excellent homemade food.
R. D.
Wonderfully quaint tea rooms, just how I imagine a tea rooms should be, cosy setting, tasty cakes, scone & sandwiches, afternoon tea was superb, good value for money..staff were very welcoming and friendly, will definitely visit again.
N. C. (.
Love this place! Due to covid seating is minimal so be prepared to queue as this is a popular tea room. BUT queueing is worth the wait as the cake is always fresh and let's face it who doesn't love a piece of moist fresh cake. The lady that served us was so polite and friendly and made our lunchtime treat amazing.
D. T.
Enjoy my cream tea service very good nice and clean will go back
H. S.
A sheer delight to enjoy all day. The staff are joyous and friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. In my opinion The Essex Rose Tea Room serves the best Americano coffee in the whole of Dedham Vale.
T. R.
Great staff, great food and dog (small and well behaved) friendly. Perfect place to stop off for some refreshments on the "Constable Walk"
T. W.
On our last visit, staff were dealing with a very rude customer which was unfortunate. There were some shortcomings in the service provided, though - we practically had to ask staff to take our dirty plates and if we can see dessert options, the person chaperoning the new guy on his first day could have been given more training on how to train new colleagues perhaps. Otherwise, food is great, location is great.
K. H.
Lovely blueberry crumble cake 👍 Afternoon tea, 2 scones, jam, clotted cream
A. R.
The service is good but the afternoon tea could be improved. The sandwiches were good but overall what we got did not worth the 30£ price.
The small shop in the back however has a nice variety of jams and goodies at good prices.
S. B.
Had a nice afternoon tea with some friends last Saturday. Location is lovely and the tea rooms were busy. Food was nice and tasty, but service was a bit lacking.
Difficult to get waitresses attention at times, when our afternoon tea was brought out there were no plates, napkins or cutlery provided which meant waiting to tuck in, then when we asked for a box to take a couple of petit fours home at the end bit seemed to take a long time and several requests before one materialised.
It could have just been that they were busy and service suffered a little as a result, but it took the shine off an otherwise pleasant experience in comparison to other tearooms we've visited.
A. F.
Lovely historic tea room with very nice food. Gets extreamly busy and you can't always get in, but they do accept bookings. If you're spending a day exploring Dedham and want somewhere nice to eat it's worth booking a table. Also worth noting that they do a take out coffee service and sell ice cream tubs and cones too.
D. G.
What a lovely find! Fabulous GF carrot cake and a latte, staff are very friendly and welcoming. Perfect place to find all the Tiptree jams, pickles, chutney etc
R. B.
Pleasant tea room serving light lunches and cream teas. Our salmon and prawn salad was very good but could perhaps have had a bit more salmon on it. Waitress very friendly and chatty. Cream Tea was very good. They also sell Tiptree jams and chutneys etc. It was very busy when we went on a mid-September Monday lunchtime so probably gets jammed at peak times.
G. B.
Considering the hype, this was a disappointing visit. The scone was doughy and heavy, the pre-packed portion of cream was too small. The cream supplied with the dessert was like milk. Very odd.
Service was friendly and prompt and the bustling environment was pleasant, not too noisy considering the limited space.
L. L.
Lovely little tea room, staff very friendly and polite, great service and excellent cream teas
L. P.
Service was very quick, tables far apart to keep to social distancing. Really enjoyed having our Cream Teas. Fresh and delicious as always! Would definitely recommend.
L. G.
Lovely place...you wouldn't know it's part of a small local chain as it still maintains the personality of a privately owned restaurant.
Food here is delicious, good selection and all reasonably priced with no scrimping on portion sizes.
Staff are always friendly and helpful.
Afternoon Tea is lovely....although it is hard to choose between any of the dishes I've had.
S. J.
Family Friendly, great food and service. We had jacket potatoes with beans and cheese and scone with cream and Jam. Also, egg mayo sandwiches. We had a baby with us and were provided with crayons and paper to keep him busy and a spare plate so he could share his mummy's lunch.
S. B.
I visited here with my elderly Mother & a group of her friends last month. We literally piled in (not all on one table but there msu have been about 30 of us) & they were so accommodating & helpful. Due to the average age of our party being 80yrs we only ordered 2 sandwiches between 5 of us - but again they had no issues with this & brought us spare plates & cutlery with a smile & some lovely chit-chat! Then one of the ladies knocked over TWO glasses of drink which went every where - but the lovely waitress just came flying over to help & to clear up (both table & floor). When we left we forgot a hat & so the same waitress came flying up the road chasing us to give it back! As she caught up with us up the road she puffed for breath & said "You lot have been nothing but trouble!!" We all just burst out laughing - as did she!
I was SO impressed at their kindness & helpfulness & the fact they really didn't seem at all money focused & didn't mind us causing havoc! Well done you guys! Plus an extra special shout out to the waitress who was not only efficient but also lovely & gave us all a great laugh!
Well done The Essex Rose Tea House!
A. S.
It was nice but I expected more for the price. Cake was a bit dry, didn't ask us what type of tea we wanted etc.. small things but for the price you expect them to get it right.
M. K.
Delightful tea room, and very accommodating to Gluten Free, it was lovely to see well behaved dogs were allowed in too 😀. I would advise booking as incredibly busy and have plenty of time for your visit, as we stayed longer than we would normally, bring a purse as they sell Tiptree Jams and sauces x
M. D.
My wife caused confusion when she ordered a black latte coffee, but this corner tea shop was ideal for four of us, for afternoon drinks and cakes. It was cozy, friendly and enjoyable, mid-way on a walk around this charming old village of Dedham.
A. J.
Well what can I say what an absolute little gem of a place. The best breakfast in the area. Definitely worth the trip out.
D. B.
Honest David's reviews
Nice little tea shop right on the corner of the main Street.
Bright and cheerful with lovely staff.
Fresh tea and nice coffee along with cakes of all sorts.
If you visit Dedham then pop in and have a cuppa, they will make you feel at home
Well earnt 5*****
A. A. R.
The local source for Tiptree Jam, need o say more? Ok, a traditional and friendly tea room in the heart of picturesque Dedham. A must for anyone cultured and hungry, just don't forget to take some Loganberry jam home with you!
S. K.
We had a last minute coffee and scone here. It was delicious, the cream tea comes with 2 scones so we just ordered an extra drink. They also sell tiptree preserves, so definitely worth a visit.
S. “. B.
Always gorgeous cakes & scrumptious food served by friendly staff in the lovely old building.
Can get very busy even in what you may consider quieter times so it might be best to book.
S. M.
Beautiful setting, great Ploughmans, highly recommend
R. G.
Traditional English tea room. Most tables reserved, because it is so good, but very helpful friendly staff managed to find us a table as we were just visiting for the day. Service and food was excellent. A must visit location.
J. M.
Nice food and staff were very helpful
m. b.
Superb coffee and cake in historic surroundings. Excellent staff too. Lovely.
M. B.
Lovely place for tea and scones (gluten free as well) and clotted cream in the beautiful village of Dedham! We've been doing this for years and years - first stop when we come from either side of the Atlantic!
M. S.
Brilliant! Open until 5pm on a Sunday, great friendly environment. Good value, top quality you would expect from Wilkin and son.
M. W.
We love Dedham and we love the Essex Rose. We are regulars and we think the food is excellent. It's a lovely old building and the service is always friendly and never slow. We love it and will be back again very soon.
A. H. H.
Lovely grub and great setting. Only went for a little lunch, but the place has a great vibe and if you fancy a £25 lunch for two, this is a fantastic place to discover.
E. O. J.
All was lovely apart from the scones which had been microwaved. Nice team that work there as well.
S. T.
I just want to say what a lovely day my friends and I had today at the essex tea room in Dedham! Our friend is off to Mexico next week to get married and we wanted to send her off with a lovely afternoon tea. It was so lovely to see her face light up when she arrived and we were taken to our table which we had already decorated with balloons, flowers and gifts. The service was fantastic, the food was amazing and the glass of bubbly was such a lovely added touch! Thank you so much! We would highly recommend this lovely tea room and we will most definitely be back soon! X
J. R.
Dedham is a beautiful part of the world, not to be missed by anybody travelling to Essex. Be sure to call in at The Essex Rose and enjoy traditional tea with well presented cakes, cream and dainty little sandwiches. This is a quite delightful establishment which every age group can enjoy.
F. E.
This place is very nice with historic feel to it. The food and customer service is very good. However, their toilets can be upgraded to be made a bit bigger.
W. D.
Had a really nice bacon and brie toasted sandwich with a salad. Beautiful little spot with comfortable seats and lovely staff. Truly a must for any visitors.

M. M.
Had breakfast here on mothers day, and it was really nice, the staff were friendly, and to top it off we were given some free jars of tiptree jam & salted caramel to try 👍 We will certainly be going back.

Simple but excellent baked potatoes; cakes and scones and lots of Tiptree products on sale - including salted caramel vodka. Yum.

M. N.
Excellent food and drink. Lovely sausage sandwiches. Great staff and service.
D. M.
Good hot chocolate! Asked for marshmallows, but they weren't on it.
D. B.
Always a reliably good spot for savouries and cakes. Very old world and civilised😃
J. B.
Reasonable food of the light lunch and tea type, good location but service relatively inattentive and amateurish. Staff also need to consider whether customers desire to hear staff gossip shouted across the premises. Tiptree conserves, various cakes and excellent 99s also sold.
S. M.
Excellent food and service in a lovely 16th century tea room in a wonderful old English town. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
K. W.
Lovely food and service

Over rated. The staff are not great. They seem to think this is the best place in Dedham so just enjoy it!! Actually it is not, The Old Bakery is better.
M. H.
Lovely friendly tearoom, nice menu, had a nice G&T in a jam jar, let us bring the dog in too. Really nice place
M. Y.

They are also part of the Tiptree group, and all Tiptree product's are available to buy here.
