The coffee was really good, they were able to make exactly what we wanted even if it wasn't exactly on the menu. The Veggie Sandwhich was super good and the almond croissant was incredible. They also have tons of local art on the back wall for sale and a hidden little gem of second-hand clothes for sale as well, lots of adorable 90s windbreakers.

Great atmosphere, small and cozy — they do have a limit on laptop use so this isn’t the place to stay for hours to get work done but definitely a spot to chat with friends and loved ones. Staff are also incredibly kind

Great range of sandwiches, cakes and coffees. Staff are regularly cleaning tables and counters. My favourite thing here is this salami sandwich. The place is full of good vibes too and everyone is friendly.

I went to August 21 today for a bite to eat and a coffee. The waitress was really friendly, helpful and bright and she made a brilliant cappuccino! Thank you to the staff for making every visit brilliant.

A lovely little Edinburgh coffee house doing the usual pastries and cakes along side a good selection of Italian style sandwiches and solid coffee. Evidently a local haunt for residents, most are known by name and will often bring a fine array of dogs. Cosy and comfortable this is a nice place to get away from it all or catch-up with a friend.

I love this wee gem of a place. The staff are fantastic; courteous, professional and fun. The layout, atmosphere and decor, is artistic, creative and comfortable - it really does make you want to switch off from the world and chill out. I go to read my books, but likewise I do go to get away from the world to do my admin work; it has a home from home feel. I live just up the road from this delightful coffee outlet and have gone for a soy latte on many occasions now. The cakes, coffee and sandwiches are all homemade and delicious. The staff are always very friendly. Basically: I can’t recommend the place highly enough. Especially when it comes to the soy lattes. Check it out!

A cosy place with limited seating though - wouldn’t recommend for a gossip with your best friend or sharing of a bit of life dramas cause the next person will seat literally by your elbow. But it’s a friendly atmosphere out here, coffee tastes great, food is good and if only it wasn’t for the smell of frying sandwiches and toast when you leave, it could become one of my faves...

BIg fan of this as the coffee is GREAT and it creates a friendly chatty neighbourhood vibe catering equally well to locals, students and posher Newington/Grange types. Homemade cakes are great - the sandwich selection is ok but I feel they are stuck in a bit of a rut with it - possibly due to the fact that as I understand they cant food prep on site. Also - the cool railway sleeper tables always seem slightly sticky - they could do with a good brush out and steam clean - (back room window too). Hate being slightly critical as I do love this place ...

August 21 now opens in the evening. What a great local restaurant. We were made to feel so welcome by Alex (the girl!) There are 3 Alex's. The Vietnamese salad was tremendous. My husband chose the risotto, the truffle oil through it gave a terrific depth of flavour. I wish all local restaurants were this good. I would highly recommend. Morningside, Bruntsfield folk, get yourselves to August 21 it is quite a find.
