Very cool building, nice seating, and really friendly staff. Double espresso was perfectly extracted, and very pleasant. Nice little biscuits too! The offer of a long black was a welcome relief from having to ask for americanos with less water in, but it was still on the large side for me - not unpleasant though! Will be recommending!

Sorry to say this out loud but I have just had the best flat white I have ever had. Anywhere. Ever!! So if they put a sign up saying "The World's Best Cup of Coffee" then 1/it's true and 2/it's my fault they've put the sign up cos I told em after I'd had it. PS, I also had the rocky road cake and that was pretty hard to beat too.

Stopped by when they were restricted to selling from their front door. All drinks were just £2 which was great, and they had fab coffee. Also provided oat milk which was a plus. Would definitely like to go back when they are fully opened.

This is such a warm and welcoming place. It's cozy and has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. I've never actually had their coffee, but their food is fantastic! I love the personal touches too, they ask for your name with your order and then make sure to use it, this seems natural and friendly and not forced like some other coffee chains...

Really cozy with a nice array of foods and coffee. Has a local student vibe to it due to all the laptops spread out downstairs, which is nice. Not very touristy feeling. All the wood inside is lovely. Upstairs is a bit loud with all the coffee prep, but downstairs is much quieter. Parking was pretty easy in the area.

Wonderful coffee shop nearby our hotel that we stumbled on while in search of close coffee and a snack. Had their ham and brie croissant sandwiches three days in a row because they were so good. A great soy latte as well! The staff was lovely and very friendly.

The interior is spacious with big windows (great for people watching) and large wooden tables. There are quirky calming decorations around the place not to mention the array of herbal teas and long list of smoothie options which gives the cafe a healthy vibe. I can feel myself wanting to cleanse and be healthier as soon as I enter. They cups are very distinctive too - a totem pole design, very swish! The staff are friendly and welcoming and put customers at ease. It is a good place to chill out, do a bit of work (as the tables are spacious) or just watch the world go by.

REALLY loved this wee place! Whether you're passing by or in need of a decent coffee this is the place! I had a iced latte and I noticed the metal straw which I thought was a awesome touch and my friend had a hot drink which came with a yummy biscuit! The wood furniture was a cute touch too!

Amazing coffee, great space, and friendly baristas. Found a cozy corner in the shop near a plug and got to work. Enjoyed a delectable cappuccino. It's a place with a great atmosphere and great tunes. There's a lot of people that come through around the clock, and the team makes running this place look effortless. Black Medicine is the perfect place for some coffee or tea, a nice chat, or a place to work as a freelancer or study. Definitely a favorite cafe of mine here in Edinburgh. I'll be back!

Staff are great, I love their refusal to use disposable cups! I find some of the seats rather uncomfortable though, and it gets way too busy with people on their laptops at times. But if you are into working from a coffee shop, this seems to be one of the best places around!

One of my favourite Cafe's. I used to grab lunch here regularly when I was at school. The restaurant is furnished with really cool wooden furniture, with just the right bustling cafe ambiance with quiet music. It is always very busy because it is so popular. My favourite things on the menu are the panini's, they are all delicious, I've never been able to choose a favourite; and if I'm feeling healthy their smoothie's, if not their Oreo Milkshake!

Nice and I like the wooden and natural feel to the theme of the cafe. I would say that some times the coffees I've gotten there have not really been warm enough and it can get very busy too when people choose to stay for a while in the nice and friendly atmosphere. If you want great coffee but want to shy away from chain stores and go for a local independent retailer, the Black Medicine is the place to go. Not only will you find great coffee, the set up of the cafe itself is unique in that the wooden furniture (including the tabletops) are made from one piece of wood. It gives the shop a unique feel in that you won't find a coffee shop that looks like all other. It's definitely a memorable experience you'll remember once you've tried their coffee.

Would really like to give 3.5 here. Odd mix of tourist and students studying. The decor and atmosphere was fun and comfortable. Even with the music up a bit to loud. The drinks were above average with a nice and friendly staff.

One of my favourite places in Edinburgh. Very good coffee and food choices. Love their croissants and tray bakes. You can bring your own keepcup and get your coffee cheaper. The staff is very polite and fun to talk with. The whole place looks nice and cozy and it’s self service. You can either sit in or takeaway. I believe it’s perfect for students and you’re going to enjoy it whether you go alone or as a group.

I always love coming here, since the staff are so friendly and the hot lemon, honey, and ginger drink has kept me alive during the winter. I love coming to work here, since the downstairs area is so spacious and relatively quiet. I actually came in once on a bad day and started crying while I was waiting for my drink (which was super embarrassing) and a staff member gave me some extra speculoos cookies and it absolutely made my day! Also super dog friendly and have dog treats at the counter.

I am so in love with black medicine!! I go maybe 3-4 times a week and every time it's absolutely lovely, I've never had anything I didn't like and everyone there has been so sweet. The hot chocolate, iced latte, filled bagels, and pain au chocolat are all favorites. Every single barista has been an angel- even offered me free pastries close to closing and welcomed me back every time I come. It is almost always crowded so it can be a challenge to find a seat but once you do, it's coffee shop perfection.

I like to drop in on a Saturday morning. The wood and stone decor creates a relaxed atmosphere, and on a Saturday morning it's not too busy. I had a bagel with jam today which was very nice and an Americano which I really enjoyed. Quite a depth to the flavour of it and a good complement to the bagel. Staff always seem friendly enough. Not since I left the city have I properly appreciated Black Medicine. Upon visting again recently I have realised that nothing else in the UK compares! Lovely coffee shop. The only star they have lost is because they’ve removed the avocado toast from the menu! 😰 they still have vegan options - always a smashing vegan brownie. Often a vegan haggis and cheese panini, and nice soup. Petition to get avo toast back though i was heartbroken when I went in and they said they didn’t do it anymore. Love the cozy basement place where lots of students study, also free wifi. Sometimes quite busy but never a massive wait for drinks or food.

I personally find Black Medicine a bit noisy for catching up with someone, especially if you happen to sit under the music speaker. Despite this, it can be great for a quick treat or a solo trip. There is a lovely range of smoothies which make a good alternative to coffee/tea/water. The carrot cake is awesome and often I'll buy it as a takeaway (they put it in a paper cup!). The pastries and sandwiches are very tasty too- especially the savoury croissants!

I really like this place but the stairs in the building are quite difficult to pass when you are holding a coffee. I would suggest a small lift that connects downstairs with the entrance for people to take their stuff without having to afraid losing your balance in the stairs spilling everything in the process

Excellent espresso! Ah I've been in Spain for a week and only once did I stumble upon goooooooooood espresso in that time. This awesome place saved my soul. I had cortado with oat milk and a side of honey. Tbh, I didn't need the honey the cortado was that good. And the atmosphere, just excellent. At under £10 for two including apple juice (very large glass) and pot of tea this was fantastic value for money in Edinburgh, right across from the Festival Theatre. Would definitely go back. One of the coziest (cosiest) cafes I have ever been to! Ordered a mocha and found a cozy nook to sit and write in. Foggy windows because of the warmth in here. Extremely comfortable. Staff was very friendly and extremely efficient. Medium sized line and they flew through it. My mocha was DELICIOUS. They also offer food if you’re hungry. It’s worth stopping by, even if it is insanely out of your way. You’ll be better off, there isn’t a better cafe within 1,000 miles.

Vibe + Environment: yes! Pastries/food: didn’t have but it look luscious. Drinks: I ordered the chai latte and was disappointed. It was bitter and sharp, burning from first touch through the finish. I’ve had several chais lattes in the city and this is at the bottom. I’m hoping their coffee is better than their chai.

We came here mostly on a whim because of the appealing name of this cafe, and were pleasantly surprised by the lovely staff and comfortable interior with heavy wood decoration and plentiful seating (not to mention, free WiFi). We ordered a large latte, a flat white, and a cajun tuna melt, which ran us around 9 GBP. Overall, the food was solid. Latte was a tad on the watery side (although this may be because I got the large -- although my partner confirms her flat white was bland-ish as well), sammie was spicy and tasty, and warmed up to boot. The coffees were served alongside a nice gingersnap biscuit, which was a great touch.

Always a pleasure to visit Black Medicine. I love going to places that know their tea and they have a lovely atmosphere. They have a robust mask policy and a once way system to help with congestion in cramped quarters. Prices are really cheap too, especially given the quality of goods. Definitely stop on by if you have time

I noticed that downstairs is pretty atmospheric with a pleasing backwash of jazz on the speakers. Just enjoy and if you are lucky watch time go by outside. It was that good. We went back for a late breakfast the following day before going home to Jarrow. There are over 200 episodes of friends (not telling you how many incase you steal the answer for a pub quiz) but its taken me over 200 appearances for a decent enough WiFi connection to say how good the coffee is and staff are. Perfect cool spot for a seat n spraff with locals and intellectuals a like. Some people have to walk 3 miles for water, i walk 3 for a decent mocha and backhanded compliment. Remember to tip the crew with your change and they'll look out for you when you're in need n dinny be greedy offer the person next to you a seat n if you ask about the sugar content of the treats the boys will kick you on the street 🤙
