Reviews of Black Medicine Coffee Co
S. R.
One of many great coffee shops here in the old town. Nice fresh pastries and sandwiches. Edinburgh cozy with plenty of seating upstairs and down. Terrific staff. Price in line with city.
A. B.
I loved the atmosphere and vibe of this coffee shop. The wood furniture, decor and quotes from previous customers were all very eclectic.
The service was very speedy, and the flavours of the Orange cake were just divine. I hope to visit when I’m in Edinburgh again!
K. E.
I got a seasonal special, the Eton Mess milkshake! It was delicious and they had apparently made too much but gave me the extra in a small cup for free anyway. The atmosphere is great for socializing and downstairs there is a calmer seating area if one is trying to work.
J. J. A. L.
Good atmosphere and space. Lot of options of cakes and different coffees. Great for a short stop or if you prefer to work / study. A must see for HP fans.
R. T.
Cozy place to take a coffee alone or with friends. The coffee is good (not the best). Price is average. The place have 2 floors, so normally have enough space.
M. R.
Vibe + Environment: yes!
Pastries/food: didn’t have but it look luscious.
Drinks: I ordered the chai latte and was disappointed. It was bitter and sharp, burning from first touch through the finish. I’ve had several chais lattes in the city and this is at the bottom. I’m hoping their coffee is better than their chai.
S. W.
Unique, funky and yet it is cozy. Great coffee, pastries. I enjoyed my time there
H. E.
Came here for a nice study session and I can say they must pull some sort of black magic in order to make this place so cozy!!
Came here for a study session and had a loverly nice coffe, can say they have some good crossaints too!
My only gripe is that the tables can be a tad too small, but thats understandatable because its a coffee shop, not a library! 😂
R. D.
After donating platelets I decided to pop along for my caffeine fix. Promptly & pleasantly served, my flat white & chocolate muffin didn't disappoint. I noticed that downstairs is pretty atmospheric with a pleasing backwash of jazz on the speakers. Definitely recommended and as a bonus, it's on the Dugs Welcome list so that you an take along your 4 legged friend.
P. T.
The vibes are nice. Pretty packed in the early afternoon. I had a dirty chai latte and unfortunately it was not warm enough and the taste of the espresso ☕️ didn’t stand out.
Y.
Great coffee, very nice atmosphere and design. The staff were very friendly. Highly recommended
#Yousef’sRecommendation 👌🏻
M. H.
Cappuccino and orange almond cake. Chairs were uncomfortable, too high and nowhere to put your dangling feet, nice restroom, cake was ok, cappuccino was decent.
D. H.
Best mocha ever! The coffee and the pastries were 10/10. If you’re in Edinburgh you have to get some Black Medicine Coffee.
J. G.
The ideal place to grab a coffee and a snack in Edinburgh. Quirky interiors, great coffee, and an impressive selection of food from soup to sandwiches and paninis. The staff are fantastic – they go out of their way to make you happy and serve you with a smile. Highly recommend the place – it’s a perfect spot to read or write while watching the world go by.
M. H.
Such a cool gem. Loved the coffee, atmosphere and inside setup/decoration.
M. B.
The sandwiches cakes and all drinks are awesome. The place is quirky and original and it isn’t a complete rip off. Staff aren’t the friendliest though hence missing out on 5 stars but either way it’s an institution and you should go.
L. Š.
Delicious food and coffee, cozy atmosphere and nice staff. Loved this!
M. (.
One of the best coffee shops in the city! The atmosphere is very relax and unique. There is lower floor, that is cozy and with bigger tables. They also provide books and board games. The coffee is amazing, the food is always fresh and tasty. They offer variety of pastry, bagels, panini's, soup, whatever you desire. Prices are great. You can grab anything as take away. Window tables: perfect spot for rainy days!
B. N.
Lovely coffee shop. The only star they have lost is because they’ve removed the avocado toast from the menu! 😰 they still have vegan options - always a smashing vegan brownie. Often a vegan haggis and cheese panini, and nice soup. Petition to get avo toast back though i was heartbroken when I went in and they said they didn’t do it anymore.
Love the cozy basement place where lots of students study, also free wifi. Sometimes quite busy but never a massive wait for drinks or food.
E. P.
Almost too crowded to be a pleasant experience however menu is varied, interesting and reasonable price. Coffee was good. Would recommend sitting in the basement where it was a bit quieter
D. F.
Outstanding place with fabulous speciality coffee, great quality food and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Child friendly with high chairs available. A firm favourite place to visit.
M. K.
Excellent espresso! Ah I've been in Spain for a week and only once did I stumble upon goooooooooood espresso in that time. This awesome place saved my soul.
I had cortado with oat milk and a side of honey. Tbh, I didn't need the honey the cortado was that good.
And the atmosphere, just excellent. Find the corner nook with a wooden bench with seating for two people.
Made my day!
Highly recommended.
M. C. (.
Can't give a fair rating for food, I mainly order the excellent coffees here. The staff are super friendly, and it's a great chill place.
S. W.
Great coffee and sandwiches. A bit loud to study in, but I was there on a Saturday
E. M.
Pretty good coffee, not awful prices, lovely atmosphere. WiFi is not good at all however, which is frustrating if you attend with the hopes of getting a bit of work done.
R. T.
One of the coziest (cosiest) cafes I have ever been to! Ordered a mocha and found a cozy nook to sit and write in. Foggy windows because of the warmth in here. Extremely comfortable. Staff was very friendly and extremely efficient. Medium sized line and they flew through it. My mocha was DELICIOUS. They also offer food if you’re hungry. It’s worth stopping by, even if it is insanely out of your way. You’ll be better off, there isn’t a better cafe within 1,000 miles.
K. G.
Was such a walk down memory lane visiting Black Medicine after 5 years, the coffee is still wonderful (oat and soya available and more syrups than you could ever ask for!) - the food is still amazing, I opted for the sweet potato pakora/falafel and hummus ciabatta! Toasted and perfect for the cold/wet weather. Staff are super friendly and taking social distancing/safety guidelines seriously ensuring your visit is safe and enjoyable. This place is such a gem. If you're in Edinburgh you must visit!!! The cafe itself is beautiful too.
M. W.
We visited in January 2020, and this was a darling little shop to escape the cold. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the coffee was delicious! We ordered Americanos and they came with an excellent little ginger snap biscuit on the side. We’ll be back the next time we’re in Edinburgh!
V. R.
Lovely coffee shop with a plethora of teas. Overall cool vibe and great views of old college. The scones are nice and the staff was very friendly. It's the perfect place to cozy up and escape the rain, or enjoy a quiet breakfast.
A. S.
The service, the coffee and the muffin were very good, though the snacks could've been a notch better in my humble opinion.
E. H.
Love doesn't come easy, but that's only because this place took it all! Easily one of my favourite cafés in Edinburgh, hands down. Great ambiance, friendly and efficient staff, delicious coffees and pastries... what's not to love? Also look at their cute little mascot!!
And I'm gonna be honest, they have the best croissants I've had to date no joke. Had my fair share of good coffees here as well: flat whites, iced latte, mocha... Oh, and they serve amazing PSLs as well for all you fall lovers 😉 I can assure you that they taste great.
D. B.
This is one of my favourite coffee shops in Edinburgh. The wood and stone interior emanates a relaxed vibe and the various seating options should suit most people's preferences. The quality of the food and drink is top-notch and reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and helpful. I'll be coming back here often I think.
A. M.
Love the location and the atmosphere. Hot chocolate was a little more lukewarm than hot but that's fine
C. B.
This is a really funky coffee shop, we had been to the surgeons museum and fancied a sweet treat
The chap serving was a delight and couldn't of made us feel more welcome
The cakes and drinks were delic
£13 for a huge bit of cake x2 and a hot chocolate and a late
Very relaxed vibe with lots of funky decor
Toilets are a bit grubby that's the only down side
Check this place out you won't be disappointed
K. F.
Lovely little gem! Staff super nice and friendly, food is lush and milkshakes too!! Best chai latte I’ve had in Edinburgh!
N. W.
I'll never get tired of this place. Get the caramel shortbread. In fact try one of everything. Try all the coffee options including the biscoff one. Sit with a book and just enjoy the people that come and go. My favourite coffee shop in the world!
S. C.
This was a five-star study spot (great ambience and service, average food) but the Wifi almost never works, and is spotty when it does - can be good or bad, depending on what you’re looking for.
S. D.
Great place for catch ups and coffee dates. Coffee is lovely, however pastry and sandwich selection bit lacking. It also tends to be very busy place, especially with students which results in pretty slow service. You have to wait for your coffee without a chance to secure a table, especially if you want to sit down stairs. Despite that, staff is friendly and it is a nice place to be when it is not too busy.
W. L.
Enjoyed the shop and it cool atmosphere. Coffee could have been a bit better prepared as my flat white looked like it was topped with foamy cream. Still excellent quality coffee though. 🙂
M. W.
Spent a lovely afternoon here. Items can be pricey but the quality makes up for it. It's usually busy but hopefully you can grab a table. Staff seem friendly but it can get crowded by the bar sometimes as people wait for their order.
A. A.
The loved the place it has such a rustic cozy vibes to it , great and quick service , I ordered a flat white coffee and it was so good. Definitely I’ll visit it again.
C. E.
Lovely cafe with amazing and reasonably priced lunch food. Lovely staff and really nice atmosphere.
J. M.
The place where JK Rowling wrote the beginning of the Harry Potter stories. After a Harry Potter tour round Edinburgh the perfect place to rest and relax. Both for eat in an take away, it's super tasty and easily affordable if on a budget. I stayed 2 hours and just read and read... Cute and different interior, some music on as well.
K. K.
Great vibe, friendly staff! But unfortunately barely any coffee taste in the coffee, more like drinking milk. Strongly suggest to get a double shot or less milk.
K. K.
A delightful spot for coffee, tea, and some delicious snacks. Can get a bit crowded, but if you're lucky enough to find a spot to sit and have a bite, the atmosphere is delightful!
N.
Large space with additional seating downstairs, and good coffee/tea selection. Sandwiches looked a bit sad and unappetizing tho and I wouldn't call this a cozy place to stay (weird chairs)
D. K.
An excellent popular coffee shop with locals and tourists alike. The food is great and the atmosphere is very comfortable and welcoming
C. A.
The coffee is great and also not too loud, so I vs a great place to sit and relax for a bit. There are a lot of tables and chairs so it can feel a bit cramped on their main floor. (They do have extra seating on the second floor.) While I like the staff and the coffee, the food is good but not the greatest. That aside I definitely recommend the place.
N. P.
Great little coffee shop to have a nice cup of coffee, socialize, and get some work done. Plenty of seating and friendly staff
G. S.
Been here a coupe of times. Good coffee and food. Downstairs is really cosy.
r. a.
Gorgeous inside with delicious food and drinks, try the biscoff biscuit mocha!!!
M. G.
A quaint and quirky caffe with skilled baristas. Best suited to young people. Large sitting area downstairs as well as a selection of cakes and foods makes it a good hangout spots for this cold evenings.
R. P.
Tons of seating in a super cool and quirky space with great coffee. The staff were friendly and the food looked wonderful too. My only complaint is that it would have been nice if my croissant had been toasted but they don't have a toaster. Better and less busy than Black Medicine across the road.
P. M.
Great coffee and cake in a cool cafe. Pleasantly busy and friendly staff.
K. H.
What a great space!! We loved it here. Being from the States, it had a distinct Pacific Northwest feel to it. Loved all the creatures and the staff were very kind. Lots of room to sit upstairs and downstairs, and being near the college, a great space for students to go and work. I wish I lived in EDI so I could visit here more often. My one recommendation to the store is you should consider making stickers of your totem pole! I would have loved one for my water bottle to take as a souvenir and didn't see any. Just a thought!
L. N.
Great atmosphere, managed to arrive at a less busier time but seems it is quite popular. perfect for sandwhiches and cakes, they seemed to have a few different dishes too like soup. Loved the cup sizes!
A. F.
Excellent coffee, great vibes, interesting interior, nice staff. They forgot our scones even though it was quite empty... Scones were okay, kinda dry. They didn't have any cream, butter only.
A. G. (.
Love the staff and their quirks. Coffee is some if the best I've had in Edinburgh.
S. C.
Great coffee, attentive and friendly staff, cool decor. Would get that extra star if there more vegan options available.
K. S.
Nice ambiance but really bad wifi, and I couldn’t access cellular data on the bottom level. Got the chai latte, but should have asked for the spicy version.
M. T.
Really delicious breakfast and coffee place!
Their smoothies are also to die for.
M. M.
I have been going here for many years great place took my kids there and they still pay them a visit
F. A.
Black Medicine is by far my favourite café. Although it is often very overcrowded it is worth the hype. Beautiful and homely aesthetic and great drinks.
A. H.
Delicious coffee and pastries. Vegan and gf options available. Very friendly service. We will be back.
T. T.
We came here mostly on a whim because of the appealing name of this cafe, and were pleasantly surprised by the lovely staff and comfortable interior with heavy wood decoration and plentiful seating (not to mention, free WiFi). We ordered a large latte, a flat white, and a cajun tuna melt, which ran us around 9 GBP.
Overall, the food was solid. Latte was a tad on the watery side (although this may be because I got the large -- although my partner confirms her flat white was bland-ish as well), sammie was spicy and tasty, and warmed up to boot. The coffees were served alongside a nice gingersnap biscuit, which was a great touch.
C. H.
Really nice coffee, wooden decor and ambiance, with plenty of seats spread out across two levels. Most of the seats are filled up by local students during afternoons; nothing wrong with that :)
L. D.
Inexpensive but delicious. The staff is very friendly as well. Good place to grab a cup of coffee on the go or to stay.
H. C.
Great coffee and milkshakes. It can get very busy, expect queue during busy hours.
S. M.
Excellent flavour coffee, however could do with being made with boiling water. Was served almost cold.
L. C.
Become my morning coffee place before work after my first visit. Incredible staff and just as incredible drinks and atmosphere
K.
Great staff, great coffee, great atmosphere. Not your average cafe but in the best possible way. Loads of students, great underground seating. Staff recommended delicious fudge brownie that was absolutely delicious. Do not miss this one!
S.
A lot of seating with two floors. Coffee is quite expensive at standard price around £3.30. Got a flat white and blueberry smoothie!
B. H.
Loved the coffee and atmosphere here. The service was lovely.
R. P.
Loved my morning coffee here, great service and the decor is fantastic
A. C.
Cracking good coffee shop close to the University, along the main drag of South Bridge. Friendly staff and warm atmosphere.
L. M.
An oasis. Good coffee, good cake and friendly service. Very happy. Will return.
R. M.
Lovely little coffee shop in a beautiful building. Im addition to coffee; tea, sandwiches, and pastries are served. Great place to read or do some work on your laptop.
N. F.
Absolutely love this cafe, and always come here whenever I visit Edinburgh. Great coffee and smoothies, amazing and unusual (but v comfy) furniture, top staff. Especially good when my favourite seat by the window is free!
A. C. C.
Loved everything about this place: coffee, brownies, atmosphere. Oh, and the wifi! :)
A. P.
One of my favourite cafés in Edinburgh! Apart from excellent coffee, they have amazing selection of teas, tasty cakes and delicious soups. The staff is also super friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is warm and cozy.
L. B. R.
Wonderful place, essential visit in Edinburgh. Exquisite food, cozy place, good service with friendly and professional workers. My daughter forgot her cell phone there and they helped us to send it to Spain. I'm very grateful.
S. M.
really good coffee, very warm welcoming staff, and a perfect window spot for reading/working/etc. very cool interior !
E. “. A.
Always a pleasure to visit Black Medicine. I love going to places that know their tea and they have a lovely atmosphere. They have a robust mask policy and a once way system to help with congestion in cramped quarters.
Prices are really cheap too, especially given the quality of goods. Definitely stop on by if you have time
G. I.
Great place for students. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and great selection of drinks, food and treats. Definitely one of the more expensive coffee shops in the area. My Biscoff Mocha was definitely worth it though 😋
E. I.
Amazing independent coffee shop. The people really seem to love what they do, the coffee was delicious and they have vegan options. Plenty of seating and wonderful decor. They do different Ice teas which were very tasty. 100% would go again
A. M.
The mocha was great and so was the white chocolate and raspberry muffin! The seats are slightly uncomfortable but overall nice experience!
s. c.
Nice coffee shop with a great vibe and cool Harry Potter history, terrible WiFi though that was almost unusable
W.
Nice food/coffee/staff/atmosphere.
L. C.
Probably the friendliest staff in Edinburgh! I had the iced tea which was fruity, delicious, and refreshing! My partner had their iced latte and it really revived him from a gloomy start to the day. Even I liked the coffee and I genuinely don't usually like coffee.
J. S.
Excellent coffee (although slightly pricy) and good working atmosphere. Always busy so can be hard to find a space, especially in the morning.
T. S.
Fantastic atmosphere, warm friendly environement, wonderful staff, very pleasant and polite. Great place to recharge and have a chin wag whilst watching the world go by. Great seating. Love this venue. Highly recommended. :)
C. K.
Nice relaxed atmosphere, airy, friendly staff, and of course, excellent coffee
T. F.
Best coffee in town. Super-friendly, super-cozy. Great refreshment. Thank you.
C. H.
Really cute coffee shop, busy for sit in and take away but we still managed to get a seat. Staff were really friendly and the coffee was delicious. I had a soya biscoff mocha and a slice of vegan lemon cake.
K.
Great cafe! Atmosphere was great and the staff were so friendly and welcoming! Would recommend eating here too, there is a great selection of cakes, savoury toasties and croissants.
A. B.
It was fantastic.... I enjoy coffee and was just walking by with the wife... I just love the name... so we went in... coffee, hot chocolate and brunch... with friends. Just enjoy and if you are lucky watch time go by outside. It was that good. We went back for a late breakfast the following day before going home to Jarrow.
It is worth a visit... don't just walk by, go on in and have a coffee.
Sorry no photos
T. e.
Great coffee and pastries. Awesome service
N. L.
Ecclectic interior with nice selection of savoury and sweet snacks.
I. M.
There are over 200 episodes of friends (not telling you how many incase you steal the answer for a pub quiz) but its taken me over 200 appearances for a decent enough WiFi connection to say how good the coffee is and staff are. Perfect cool spot for a seat n spraff with locals and intellectuals a like. Some people have to walk 3 miles for water, i walk 3 for a decent mocha and backhanded compliment. Remember to tip the crew with your change and they'll look out for you when you're in need n dinny be greedy offer the person next to you a seat n if you ask about the sugar content of the treats the boys will kick you on the street 🤙
M. F.
Great place for a coffee and a breakfast or to get a snack while visiting edinburgh. Prices were really good and service was quick. Quality of both food and drinks was lush. Staff were also welcoming and friendly. Really recommended!
A. T.
Amazing coffee and lovely atmosphere.
C. G.
This coffee shop is 4 star going on 5. The quality of the coffee is outstanding however the service is a bit haphazard. It beats Starbucks hands down and the other chains drag a long way behind. A good Independent almost as good as my absolute favourite Castello.
S. 8.
Great coffee and the filled bagels are amazing!
L. H.
Lovely coffee shop. Great coffee and food.
Fast service too.
P. B.
Even though I was the oldest person in there, I felt very welcomed and comfortable 😌
A. W.
Very cool building, nice seating, and really friendly staff. Double espresso was perfectly extracted, and very pleasant. Nice little biscuits too! The offer of a long black was a welcome relief from having to ask for americanos with less water in, but it was still on the large side for me - not unpleasant though! Will be recommending!
R. G.
Friendly and welcoming atmosphere, top notch drinks and dog friendly - ideal cosy nook coffeen dispensary in the city centre. Goblins and medicine cats keep up covid protocols and deliver speedy, tasty treats!
V. P.
Coffee goblin? Stop by. ☕
Delicious food and even better coffee, with roomy sitting areas and friendly staff.
A. K.
Love love this cafe. Discovered as it was near our hotel. Happy to return every day while we were in Edinburgh. One of best Croissants I’ve ever had!
G. G.
Very busy. Managed to get some seat though.
M.
Sorry to say this out loud but I have just had the best flat white I have ever had. Anywhere. Ever!! So if they put a sign up saying "The World's Best Cup of Coffee" then 1/it's true and 2/it's my fault they've put the sign up cos I told em after I'd had it. PS, I also had the rocky road cake and that was pretty hard to beat too.
J.
Stopped by when they were restricted to selling from their front door. All drinks were just £2 which was great, and they had fab coffee. Also provided oat milk which was a plus. Would definitely like to go back when they are fully opened.
R. O.
Great place for breakfast, they do a nice chai (imho), a good selection of desserts to go with your coffee, also something about gremlin (goblin?) lore but I don't go there enough to know what that's about lol, oh right and really nice staff x
G. S.
Great coffee, super helpful staff.
D. M.
This is such a warm and welcoming place. It's cozy and has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. I've never actually had their coffee, but their food is fantastic! I love the personal touches too, they ask for your name with your order and then make sure to use it, this seems natural and friendly and not forced like some other coffee chains...
D. K.
Really cozy with a nice array of foods and coffee. Has a local student vibe to it due to all the laptops spread out downstairs, which is nice. Not very touristy feeling. All the wood inside is lovely. Upstairs is a bit loud with all the coffee prep, but downstairs is much quieter. Parking was pretty easy in the area.
U. Q.
Really good coffee, brownie and cupcake. Can't complain.
I. V.
Good artisan coffee. Great ambience.
T. M.
Wonderful coffee shop nearby our hotel that we stumbled on while in search of close coffee and a snack. Had their ham and brie croissant sandwiches three days in a row because they were so good. A great soy latte as well! The staff was lovely and very friendly.
L. M.
The interior is spacious with big windows (great for people watching) and large wooden tables. There are quirky calming decorations around the place not to mention the array of herbal teas and long list of smoothie options which gives the cafe a healthy vibe. I can feel myself wanting to cleanse and be healthier as soon as I enter. They cups are very distinctive too - a totem pole design, very swish!
The staff are friendly and welcoming and put customers at ease. It is a good place to chill out, do a bit of work (as the tables are spacious) or just watch the world go by.
R. L.
Fantastic coffee, sandwiches and cakes. Really, really delightful staff, truly a credit to the place. If I lived anywhere near (instead of 330 miles south) I'd most certainly be a regular!
C. A.
Great coffee shop. Very friendly staff and great service in a very relaxed atmosphere. The place oozes cool. Loved it.
P.
Great coffee, just go there!
M. .. J.
It's tropical warmth can inspire many students do their essays and coursework 😉. A great place for students to hangout. Great vibes and super friendly staff. One of my favourite coffee shops in Edinburgh. It's my medicine 😉
m. I.
Such a amazing place! one of my favourite cafés in the whole of the UK and a regular place to go to for me. It offers always a freindly safe environment with a lovely range of cakes coffes, teas as also excellent lunches at brilliant value. If you haven't been, this cosey café it's a must to visit when around Edinburgh ☺️☺️☺️
V. K.
Service here was pretty great. Food and drinks were delicious with many options. They did well with the space available for seating and there are some really neat books lying around the cafe. The cafe is also very environmentally conscious (metal straws and discounts with your own cup).
E. C.
In the grim darkness of right now…there is only Black Medicine. Friends are gone. Partner turned traitor. Family became heretics. Ammunition is low. Fuel running out. Weather – terrible. Illness everywhere. Everything hurts. But…hope…remains. For while we still draw breath we can make it to Black Medicine – a holy shining light of purity among the shadows. Every meal is a blessing. Every creator a legend. Every drink a boon. And the vibes! Such gorgeous vibes. This is safety. This is home. This is love. Fear nothing - life traveller - for Black Medicine will recharge your very soul.
Every. Single. Time.
M. R.
Decent coffee, very cosy place. Friendly staff.
T. F.
REALLY loved this wee place! Whether you're passing by or in need of a decent coffee this is the place! I had a iced latte and I noticed the metal straw which I thought was a awesome touch and my friend had a hot drink which came with a yummy biscuit! The wood furniture was a cute touch too!
V. T.
Amazing coffee, great space, and friendly baristas. Found a cozy corner in the shop near a plug and got to work. Enjoyed a delectable cappuccino. It's a place with a great atmosphere and great tunes. There's a lot of people that come through around the clock, and the team makes running this place look effortless. Black Medicine is the perfect place for some coffee or tea, a nice chat, or a place to work as a freelancer or study. Definitely a favorite cafe of mine here in Edinburgh. I'll be back!
E. S.
The hot chocolate wasn't very nice but many cakes are amazingly and yummy gluten-free :)
T. A.
Great coffee and food, open early/close late, and plenty of space and plugs so ideal if you are looking for a place to work with your favourite hot drink!
M. N.
Popped in for a quick espresso, and wasn't disappointed.
Coffee is very good, strong, sharp and bitter.
Place is nice, loads of comfy wood seats and atmosphere is friendly and vibrant without being in your face.
Definitely one to visit again.
A. B.
Great place for a nice cuppa and some fresh morning sandwich - an amazing customer service
G. A.
Staff are great, I love their refusal to use disposable cups! I find some of the seats rather uncomfortable though, and it gets way too busy with people on their laptops at times. But if you are into working from a coffee shop, this seems to be one of the best places around!
J. H.
One of my favourite Cafe's. I used to grab lunch here regularly when I was at school. The restaurant is furnished with really cool wooden furniture, with just the right bustling cafe ambiance with quiet music. It is always very busy because it is so popular. My favourite things on the menu are the panini's, they are all delicious, I've never been able to choose a favourite; and if I'm feeling healthy their smoothie's, if not their Oreo Milkshake!
E. V.
Atmosphere was incredible, coffee and food were delicious and customer service was fantastic :) I love this cafe, I’m sad I can’t visit every day!
R. C.
Nice and I like the wooden and natural feel to the theme of the cafe. I would say that some times the coffees I've gotten there have not really been warm enough and it can get very busy too when people choose to stay for a while in the nice and friendly atmosphere. It's a good cafe and a little different from others with a sort of healthy vibe.
R. E.
Coffee is FIRE! Strong, bold, perfectly brewed, perfect temp, thick crema. Decor is nice and cozy and service super friendly and knowledgeable, see you tomorrow again lol
M. A. O.
Very tasty milk shake, cakes to die for. Xx
A. C.
Good coffee, great range of drinks - lots of smoothies and teas. Staff friendly and wide range of food. Popular place but not manic, and an independent open till 8 makes it very useful when many others shut at 5 or 6. Found the rustic decor a little too much but that's just personal taste.
T. B.
Great cafe with a wide selection of drinks and food, from small snacks to full meals. Although the upper level is generally crowded and noisy, downstairs is much more spacious, calm, and a great place to get some work done.
Highly recommend the smoothies!
S. F.
Great selection of coffee, smoothies, teas, and light meals. Rustic furniture with a twist. The staff are friendly. They have an axolotl in the basement seating area. Relaxed atmosphere.
Not very wheelchair friendly though.
A. F.
Tasty vegan haggis ciabatta.
Coffee a bit spenny.
C. B.
Hands down, the BEST coffee in Edinburgh. Friendly staff, wonderful atmosphere (and music) with plenty of seating. A great place to stop for a reasonably priced lunch when you're out and about!
P. A. G.
I have seen some WILD isshh here great shows on during Edinburgh #Fringe WonderJam was especially delightful
C. c.
Lovely wee nook for a coffee and a wee snack or bit of lunch.
M. C. (.
If you want great coffee but want to shy away from chain stores and go for a local independent retailer, the Black Medicine is the place to go. Not only will you find great coffee, the set up of the cafe itself is unique in that the wooden furniture (including the tabletops) are made from one piece of wood. It gives the shop a unique feel in that you won't find a coffee shop that looks like all other. It's definitely a memorable experience you'll remember once you've tried their coffee.
P. M.
Would really like to give 3.5 here. Odd mix of tourist and students studying. The decor and atmosphere was fun and comfortable. Even with the music up a bit to loud.
The drinks were above average with a nice and friendly staff.
C. T.
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh. Very good coffee and food choices. Love their croissants and tray bakes. You can bring your own keepcup and get your coffee cheaper.
The staff is very polite and fun to talk with. The whole place looks nice and cozy and it’s self service. You can either sit in or takeaway.
I believe it’s perfect for students and you’re going to enjoy it whether you go alone or as a group.
E. R.
Coffee is good and ambiance is cool, but not super practical as the chairs are not comfortable at all
n. m.
The biscoff latte is absolutely wonderful! Great spot for meeting up with people as well since it's in a good location. Love the vibe of the place.
s. w.
The staff was super friendly and the coffee (especially Mocha) was really good as well! It's also a great place to hang out with friends or study. 10/10 highly recommend!
C. E.
The environment here is so friendly and certainly bustles with life. The staff are very friendly too, and the coffee is worth buying. There is plenty of space in the cafe, upstairs and downstairs. The quality of this coffee is superb!
M. D.
Excellent coffee 👍🏻
w. l.
Has to be the friendliest cheeriest staff of any coffee shop. Good food. And despite a lot of tables removed for social distancing purposes maintains a nice atmosphere
D. E.
Great coffee, staff and atmosphere. Just super busy, great for the owners who are on to a winner, but for me I need a bit space (My preference) . However do go in you will not be disappointed.
J. S.
A small and perfectly formed menu. Great service from friendly staff. The artwork is adorable too. Really gives a sense of fun and welcome.
E. B.
Went for an afternoon refreshments stop. Perfect food and drinks.
K. G.
I always love coming here, since the staff are so friendly and the hot lemon, honey, and ginger drink has kept me alive during the winter. I love coming to work here, since the downstairs area is so spacious and relatively quiet. I actually came in once on a bad day and started crying while I was waiting for my drink (which was super embarrassing) and a staff member gave me some extra speculoos cookies and it absolutely made my day! Also super dog friendly and have dog treats at the counter.
M. M.
Excellent coffee. Very relaxed and casual ambience.
S. H.
I am so in love with black medicine!! I go maybe 3-4 times a week and every time it's absolutely lovely, I've never had anything I didn't like and everyone there has been so sweet. The hot chocolate, iced latte, filled bagels, and pain au chocolat are all favorites. Every single barista has been an angel- even offered me free pastries close to closing and welcomed me back every time I come. It is almost always crowded so it can be a challenge to find a seat but once you do, it's coffee shop perfection.
J. L.
Coffee was good and baked goods were average
S. F.
Really good coffee sandwich and cake. Friendly staff, and the place was nice and clean. Seating both upstairs and downstairs in the basement.
J. H. (.
Great coffee, my couch host says one of the best,
their service, family vibes and interesting decor rival all the rest.
Nice and big but still cosy,
they even offer gluten free and vegan, and this feels homely.
E. R.
Almost a year since I traveled to Edinburgh, and now I have a friend going and I still remembered this coffee shop to recommend! Quirky decor and great food and beverage - it was just what I needed for a quick bite while backpacking around, or downstairs has many cute places to sit and relax. I was taken on a date here. He chose well.
R. D.
I like to drop in on a Saturday morning. The wood and stone decor creates a relaxed atmosphere, and on a Saturday morning it's not too busy.
I had a bagel with jam today which was very nice and an Americano which I really enjoyed. Quite a depth to the flavour of it and a good complement to the bagel.
Staff always seem friendly enough. Free wifi too.
R. P.
Not since I left the city have I properly appreciated Black Medicine. Upon visting again recently I have realised that nothing else in the UK compares! Good prices, plenty of nice seating that works for big groups getting together, cute coffee dates or even the solo student. The atmosphere is perfect, hipstery and cute without going overboard! Highly recommend to anyone.
S. I.
Nice place for a coffee, interesting decor and really fun staff. The seats are back breakers though and in the basement WiFi signal is really bad (if you want to study). The basement also closes up to customers before the ground floor. Over all, good experience.
M. G.
Seemingly lots of seating but actually not much space to get comfortable (tables are a bit cramped). Coffee flavour slightly burnt, for palates used to dark sharp roasts. A bit grumpy staff but sure enough, it could have just been a rainy day.
E. G.
All the custom wood furniture is amazing. Such a great atmosphere with uni students and clever types hanging around. Coffee is fantastic and there's seating downstairs too.
A. F.
Centrally located. Good food at affordable prices. Homemade recipes included. Ample seating upstairs and downstairs. Perfect if you're looking for a place to have a cuppa and work. WiFi available. Clean bathrooms. Interesting aesthetics. Lovely service.
O. C.
Favourite coffee-house in Edinburgh. Nice selection of food and drinks. Like the really relaxed service and atmosphere they have created in this little gem of a place!
C. Y.
Great coffee and food, lovely staff. Always busy and can sometimes struggle for a table
C.
Great coffee, good vibe. It's a chilled place and good spot to crack open the laptop and do some work. Their menu is small but has enough to satisfy the hunger pains.
S.
Really wanted to like this place. Cosy ambient vibes, but coffee is just okay. Service is fine if you’re happy queuing for a while and then waiting for it because no table service. Then good look finding a table as most have one person sitting at them with a laptop! Probably won’t come back.
D. P.
Great atmosphere and coffee! Perfect place to go to get some work done in the downstairs area which is (usually) quiet. But don't go during a busy time as the wifi can slow down dramatically.
R. I.
I always seem to end up stopping here when I pass by. The coffee is great, the staff are friendly, and the prices are low for Edinburgh. It has a quirky wooden interior, and there is even an axolotl lurking downstairs.
L. M.
I am a die-hard black medicine fan. The coffee is wonderful and so are the panninis!
The wood furniture makes for a unique coffee shop and the window seats are perfect for people watching. When the weather's warm (a rare treat!) I go for one of the yummy smoothies.
A. M.
A lovely café - the coffee was fantastic and Earl Grey tea (leaf tea) very good. The sandwiches were tasty too. The décor is tasteful, beautiful handmade wooden tables. Just a lovely place - very cool.
A. C.
My favourite cafe in Edinburgh. The coffee is amazing (even the espresso), the cakes are good. Can get quite busy during lunch time, but the paninis and soup are worth it.
H. D.
The flavour was melting in my tongue
R. G.
Great atmosphere whether it's a quiet drink or a get together; staff are friendly and fast paced and the quality is second to none in Edinburgh - great range of coffees and other hot drinks, made to high standards
K. S.
One of the best flat whites I have ever had 😍
J. G.
Fab cafe with great panini’s!
A. F.
Awesome place. Amazing coffee. Kudos to the guy who left the grimdark review on the notice board.
J. W.
This was a cozy spot to stop and grab a coffee. It's usually packed with students, but the coffee was good and the staff was quite friendly. If you need respite from the bustle of the city, you'd find it here if you can find a seat open.
S. F.
Unique cozy vibes. Ancient but also modern. A place where you would wonder if it would have been your go-to had you lived in whimsical Edinburgh. JK Rowling is said to have written some HP chapters here.
J. J.
Cozy decor and decent coffee. Although is very popular with students so you may struggle to find a seat at peak times. I also believe it’s dog-friendly?
A.
Not been here for years and went with a friend today. Still a great wee place, super coffee, delicious panini!! Worth a stop in if you're that side of town ☕😁
J. C.
A nice and comfy place, with a great team and good products.
Y. G.
Went here on a couple of first dates. Amazing place but since it can't make up for my lack of personality never scored
X. M.
Nice independent coffee shop with eclectic food options (particularly good vegan/vegi options), smoothies and traybakes. Strong student crowd, often absorbing the free WiFi and seating in great numbers (I was was once them!) staff can be a mix of hostile/friendly depending what plethora of idiots they've had to deal with that day, it can be off putting, but after a couple of visits they're a little warmer to you.
Properly made coffee - can get a bit lost if busy/distracted.
Usually avoid during the Fringe Festival as it's a nightmare to get seated.
a. s.
Full of students, depending on time of year you are visiting. Nice decor, and menu. You order at the till and you have to take your order to your table. If you sat downstairs, good luck with those hot drinks!
M. R. D.
coffee good enough for a kiwi!
E. P.
I had a warm bagel with tuna and a soy cappuccino for breakfast. Good combination and it tasted good! The service was friendly, and the place looked really cosy. A good place to hangout and chill.
D. M.
Excellent coffee available from this independent coffee house. Great place to sit and read the paper or catch up with friends with loads of comfy seating throughout the café.
Food is good and there’s plenty of wee snacks available.
W. M.
Very nice atmosphere, but the coffee is only alright
D. K.
Lovely friendly staff, really cool fit out. However, and I don't want to be rude, but the coffee here is garbage. The worst coffee I've had in Scotland, and I paid £2.70 a cup for it. Eesh.
L. T.
I personally find Black Medicine a bit noisy for catching up with someone, especially if you happen to sit under the music speaker. Despite this, it can be great for a quick treat or a solo trip. There is a lovely range of smoothies which make a good alternative to coffee/tea/water. The carrot cake is awesome and often I'll buy it as a takeaway (they put it in a paper cup!). The pastries and sandwiches are very tasty too- especially the savoury croissants!
V. P.
My vegan friend wanted to go here but this is the kind of place one with a budget should avoid. Chai tea was excellent though, even if their definition of hot milk is warm.
M. C.
If you support independent local shops, the Black Medicine is the place to go. The cafe hasn't been made to look fancy, but you won't look any further for decent coffee. The staff are friendly and the selection is great.
D. H.
It's busy because it's good. The coffee is great and the bagels are lovely. Plenty of room downstairs so you should be able to squeeze yourself in.
R. C.
Delicious coffee, scrumptious chocolate caramel and shortbread slices, average carrot cake.
I love the practical way water is made available to customers here; clean glasses beside a tap. Easy and effective.
T. M.
Beautiful coffee shop. Well decorated, with friendly staff, good coffee and great food. Highly recommended, although you may struggle to find a seat around lunchtine
S. M.
A lovely, cozy atmosphere. Perfect for studying, people watching or hanging out for a coffee with friends. Staff are friendly and food and drinks are decently priced.
A. L.
Cosy, good coffee, efficient + friendly service, lots of seating. Free WiFi so perfect for studying/working! Also good for an afternoon wind-down with a friend or two. One of my favourite coffeeshops ever.
E. T.
Good coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Nice selection of cakes. Great atmosphere. Can be busy but more seating down stairs.
I. C.
Very nice coffe shop. Always is very bussy but todsy we have lucky and we can stay for a coffe.
C. R.
One of the nicest cafes in Edinburgh for coffee, with plenty of options. The food is really nice as well. However, the service was incredibly slow and they had forgotten about my food that I ordered.
P. P.
Very popular busy coffee shop with more capacity downstairs. It's a little bit cosy so not suitable for kids prams unless foldable. Upstairs property was where Harry Potter was penned, check the plaque outside on their wall ( not as is claimed the Elephant House on George IV bridge ).
D. D.
This place has a nice decor on the inside and staff is friendly. On my last visit I was disappointed with the food. I ordered a panini which didn't look very appetizing nor it tasted any good. I only ate some of it coz I was very hungry. I came 30 mins before they were closing.
C. S.
Great coffee, and cool atmosphere and decor. People often come here with their laptops and never leave, so it might take some time to find a place to seat. Still worth it.
J. M.
Best coffee in Edinburgh? I think so. Only downside is the limited number of seats. Staff are always friendly and up for a chat. If you like tinderbox in Glasgow then this is probably the closest thing Edinburgh has, but still in a league of its own!
C. M.
Great coffee and friendly, eclectic atmosphere. A truly unique independent coffee shop with friendly staff and a slightly irreverent style. I highly recommend.
M. R.
Great atmosphere for a nice afternoon tea. Also quite ideal for small groups or to study on your own. It's a very cosy place and the coffee is great!
M. A.
Nice spot, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Always full and loud, for my mind the price for tea for example is not that reasonable, in other cafés you'd get a bigger teapot
R. R.
The best and friendliest coffee in Edinburgh.
The slightly mad cap staff and quirky decor make it very welcoming. Great place to chill out and read a book.
F. m. s. G.
One of my favorite coffee shops in Edinburgh! And that's saying a lot as there are so many. Craft coffee with a sustainable attitude making it a pleasure to pop in to on a cold afternoon.
S. S.
I really like this place but the stairs in the building are quite difficult to pass when you are holding a coffee. I would suggest a small lift that connects downstairs with the entrance for people to take their stuff without having to afraid losing your balance in the stairs spilling everything in the process
M. M. S. L. (.
The decoration is full wood based which I love and the staff are just amazing. You can always find a spot either upstairs or downstairs and the coffee is very nice as well, i just love it
K. S.
Visited 9th July. Great to not only see an appropriate response incorporating customer facing COVID management but to get a tasty coffee n smoothie. 10/10 will visit again.
D. P.
Nice coffee, with a fair amount of bustle. Doesn't take too much from the atmosphere though. Definitely a nicer option than the standard high street cafe.
E. H.
Beautiful location and delicious coffee. Please do come the most often possible you will not regret it and this coffee deserve all the attention possible !!!
S. R. M.
super nice cafe for working. cozy, nice... the kind of place that takes the coffee a bit too seriously, but still... great to be around. Great wifi... and the basement is absolutely great for working a bit.
R. B. (.
Lovely coffee. Great atmosphere. Quick service. Everything you want in a good coffee shop.
V. K.
One of my favourite coffee places in Edinburgh. Very good cappuccino and latte. Also quite good tea selection. Tasty sandwiches
L. H.
Great coffee and meals, and some of the most relaxed seating and environment in the downtown area!
N. B. R.
Lovely coffee shop with super friendly staff, plenty of space, and a cozy atmosphere. Delicious sweets and soups and bread! A great escape from the bustling city.
S. S.
Great spot to read, do work, our just sit down. Full of fun, funky furniture. Coffee is good and they have some pastries and sandwiches, but the best part is the v i b e
E. B.
I had much higher expectations. The flat white had way too much milk, at least for my taste. I want to feel the strength of the coffee in my flat white, it was not the case here.
A. P.
One of the best coffee shops in Edinburgh. Very vibrant and multicultural place filled in with young people. Very cosy. Good quality of food and coffee!
S. W.
Great food and drink (loved the homemade ice tea), comfy and beautiful interior and absolutely lovely staff!! ♡♡
L. N.
Great coffee and friendly staff, lots of seating room, and power / wifi that works reliably enough for getting some work done if that's your thing. Definitely one of the better options in Edinburgh!
A. P.
Been going here for years. Great coffee and tea. A perfect spot for a quick bite or sitting down to do some work.
r. j.
Such a cosy and quirky place. Amazing coffee and friendly staff. Definitely worth visiting repeatedly! Already a favourite!
H.
Good coffee and an interesting place.
C. J.
Best coffee in town. Full of flavour.
Great variety of drinks.
Maybe could do with more types of cakes, but it is fine
K. H.
Absolutely brilliant, the food, the tea, the staff, the atmosphere. If you’re in the area you should absolutely give black medicine a visit!
H. A.
Quite pleasant coffee, very student-y which isn't necessarily bad. Nice area downstairs. Decor reminded me a little of a sauna though.
Y. S.
Slightly quirky, atmospheric, student-y place with a great selection of interesting smoothies and bites. Great and relaxed place to get a small snack or have a coffee for a catch-up with a friend.
A. P.
Cosy and quirky. Simple menu of mostly huge bagels, floury non-greasy paninis, croissants etc.
It's usually difficult to just get something 'plain' for lunch but I had a toasted bagel with a dish of cream cheese - peefect. Husband had a trio of salami on a panini. He's not a great panini fan as they can be flat and greasy...praise indeed as he said it was the best he'd ever had!
At under £10 for two including apple juice (very large glass) and pot of tea this was fantastic value for money in Edinburgh, right across from the Festival Theatre.
Would definitely go back. (Also immaculate toilets)
M. H.
Very nice coffee! VERY! Nice touch is the knowledge that J K Rowling apparently sat upstairs when writing the first of many novels....cant remember the titles.....
H. K.
Wonderful atmosphere, great coffee. Plenty of space to sit and get some work done, with loads of plug sockets too.
I. G.
Nice coffee, quick service.
S. L. (.
Nice, kind of quaint, coffee shop in a studenty location. Met some friends there and had a nice cosy time. Coffee was good and staff were friendly.
C. S.
Nice little place, coffee good too. Finding a table was a little difficult due to covid and "computer users"
J. A.
Nice place to take a good coffe. The style is like I like, with wood and stone style. Althougt student atmosfera inside, all kinds of people go there.
M. G.
Very good and affordable coffee in Old City of Edinburgh. You can feel care in cafe assistant service in this original and spacious place.
A. S.
Very nice and cosy inside with unique and cool looking wood furniture. The latte I ordered was sublime, very smooth and high quality.
C.
Fantastic coffee and service in this place, although there was one member of staff insisting I drink my 'black medicine' and kept asking about my passport information...actually feel quite weak whilst I type this...
T. J.
This is a good little lunch spot, if you're quick and can get a table. Not being a coffee drinker, I can't comment, but I've been told that the coffee is pretty excellent too ;)
S. G.
Great flat white . Scone was really good . Very friendly staff .
T. U.
Such a cute little place, with great coffee, tea and cakes! Yum.
S. J.
Great coffee to take away or drink in. More seating is available downstairs if sitting in. Friendly helpful staff make it a great independent coffee house.
S.
A bit too crowded at times, but the food is nicely priced and very good quality, plus is one of the few places where the coffee is really worth trying it
J. I.
The coffee is lovely and the cakes are huge . With helpful and friendly staff as well. This place is excellent .
J. J.
Nice coffee shop, very popular with studens and busy around lunch time. Has a unique atmosphere and quirky interior!
G. C.
Ecclectic. Coffee and cheese melt snack before visiting Dovecote gallery
R. W.
Beautiful little coffee shop selling lovely and diverse selection of food and drinks, coffees, smoothies, milk shakes etc. Staff were really friendly and I LOVED the decor!
e. r.
More than one reason, very nice cappuccino, quiet corners were to read a book or work on your device and at the same time is very dynamic to enjoy the company of friends!
L. A.
Perfect for a flat white and good book. Lovely service from lovely people
I. B.
A very nice and unique door-front. Nice staff and customer service. We've tried their milkshakes, highly recommend!
A. H.
Very tasty sandwiches, good humoured, patient and friendly staff. Big pot of Yorkshire Tea, what's not to like? We'll be back.
R. H.
Absolutely love this place, it's super friendly and pretty reasonably priced, and the coffee and cakes are fantastic. What more do you need?
S. M.
The barista made a heart out of the latte foam so that's an automatic 5 stars from me. It was also really nice coffee but that's beside the point!
A.
Quite nice coffee, and lovely wooden interior. Jk rowling liked it as a place to write. I find downstairs especially peaceful, best place to relax, and read a book.
J. M.
Coffee took ages and the atmosphere is far too loud downstairs. It's a shame because it is a good location with a lot of comfortable seating.
J. S.
Such a cosy place to chill and relax. I love the wooden interior and the Axolotl downstairs is pretty cute! I would recommend to friends and go back to this place again.
S. S. (.
Lovely busy cafe nice atmosphere lovely soup.
H. A.
Coffee is ok but a good location to take a break and relax. The coffee is espresso based and may disappoint but some good snacks available
I. M. M.
Cozy place, great service. Staff is lovely and the place has a lot of environmental friendly policies. Some books and games available at the basement bit.
N. P.
Friendly staff, unfortunately we noted on the menu Bagels but at the time were not serving. Otherwise correct facilities and lovely food/drinks.
L. B.
Quite busy but probably to be expected given it was around lunchtime in a heavy student area. Good coffee though and thorough enjoyed the bagel.
B. M.
Absolutly loved the food and coffee here. Was visiting edinburgh for 4 days and cam across this gem on our first day and we had to return for one final visit just before we headed to the airport
l. q.
gave me something to do when the shops were shut x
ps. your roast chicken pitta is why I need to buy lactase
B. W.
Great coffee, great vibes. Everyone was lovely and service was super fast.
S. E.
Good coffee but super expensive and busy. There are better places!
C. M.
Very vegan friendly and reasonably priced cafe. Cakes are pretty good and there's a nice atmosphere.
L. B.
The food is good, the hot chocolate is good, the café looks fabulous
C. A.
Good food and good value.
K. J.
Popped in for a random coffee. Excellent coffee. Very welcoming friendly and warm service. I will be back soon.
k. S.
Fantastic service, very friendly and helpful and gender neutral toilets very impressed with the diversity and service
R. C. T.
I think I should have profit share for the biscoff mocha. Other than that, nice chocos!
F. M.
I'm not a coffee drinker but this place does do gorgeous smoothies and delicious snacks. A great relaxed atmosphere too.
d. b.
Cosy wee coffee shop. Quiet sitting area Downstairs. Usually filled with students studying. Remember to go back and collect your coffee from The end of the counter.
G. v. d. L.
Relaxed atmosphere, staff is friendly and have a good sense of humor. Coffee and food were great.
C. G.
A lovely, quirky place to visit for a coffee and a bite. Couldn't recommend enough
L. O.
Great place to study, I've written many essays in here, coffee is 10/10, staff are friendly, and the decor is different and interesting to look at- I love the driftwood furniture.
T. u.
Best coffee in Edinburgh!
J. P.
Very friendly service and unique interior. They have amazing coffee and a huge selection of other amazing drinks.
W. J.

L. S.
I've been getting consistently good coffee here for years and years. Glad to see they're still going in recent times.
H. B.
Whenever I come here I’m not tempted to stay for long as I find the music too loud. The coffee itself is quite good.
o. m.
Lovely staff, atmosphere, and coffee! Amazing WiFi, good prices. Highly recommend.
t. k.
Great coffee, tea and cakes for good prices.
A. G.
Great coffee, lovely food, friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. What more could you want?
C. A.
An unusual and lovingly decorated coffee bar. Good for a quick snack and a coffee before touring the city, or as a place to work for a while.
F. M.
Beautiful coffee shop, lot's of room to study downstairs. Coffee quality is okay but not as good as Brew lab across the road
P. N.
It's one of my favorite places here in town. Not only do I come here to study but also enjoy it to read my books or bring friends along
A. S.
Great coffee and a great atmosphere. Fully enjoyed the visit.
F. (.
A lovely little coffee shop, with a great atmosphere and good drinks. Not overly expensive either.
J. B.
Effort put into decor. Downstairs open for overflow. Coffee is also nice. Great place for a date.

My favorite coffee in Edinburgh, or anywhere for that matter. Great coffee, vegan options, lovely atmosphere and awesome staff.
O. K. C.
Great place, cozy and perfect for going with friends.
Has one of the best Espressos of all Edinburgh.
S. H.
Great place, friendly staff, it's clean. Though downstairs is over crowded, there are always free places to sit 🙌
E. P.
Very good coffee and tea. The atmosphere is fantastic if you want to study, read or a nice chat with your friends
c. m.
Good service. Nice tea and coffee. Lovely atmosphere. Would go back again!
A. A.
Interesting and busy place, enjoyed and planning to return. Dropped a star as I got a feeling it's a bit grimy, but might be a result of the dark and wooden interior.
I. a. -.
Delicious big mugs of tea worth the price. Quirky wooden furniture and lively atmosphere!
M. C.
Georgous seating area! Very unique! Tasty food and drinks!
D. M.
Great coffee, good cake, nice hidey seating (getting a seat can be tricky though)
D. B.
A warming atmosphere, combined with a vast array of delicious beverages, makes the Black Medicine Coffee company a perfect setting for a well needed office break.
R.
Great service, great coffee, great food, great atmosphere, great news that independent coffee shops can keep their heads above the large chains.
P. K.
Great coffee and bagels, really nice atmosphere especially for an afternoon coffee/study break.
H. S.
Regular spot for coffee and often some food too. Great staff, great coffee!
J. B.

Definitely a go-to if staying in the old town.

A great coffee shop, wide variety of drinks and toasted sandwiches/bagels available.
Comfortable and cosy seating.
J. H.
Nice hot chocolate and if you bring back your cup you get a discount for reusing. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
M. A.
American coffee is very delicious
P. L.
Nice cafe, useless internet.
M. R.
Generally good coffee, but you may not get a seat upstairs as its a popular student spot.
k.
Great place for a sit in coffee and shake. Lovely staff and great service
B. V.
Good coffee and small food. I like the smoked salmon bagel sandwich because it was cheap and didn't have a giant stack of fish on it.
E. W.
Good atmosphere for reading, working or catching up with friends. The coffee/tea food is good as well.
B.
Great coffee, food and staff!
M. M.
Very nice atmosphere. Very good place where to work, read, undisturbed. I didn't find the chairs very comfortable, though
N. S.
