best coffee in the city! very cosy and inviting, the decor is beautiful. you can tell that the owner is very passionate and knowledgable about the business. the staff are always friendly and open for a chat, make you feel like you’ve just come round to a friend’s house for a delicious cup of coffee. would recommend it to anyone!

Right place to stop by for quick take away, fast and very friendly service, no hassle and always top selection of speciality coffees, also the outside layout is really convenient for grabbing a coffee when cycling around- definitely must visit when in the area especially if the weather isn't the best but you are on your bike or with your dog and want quick but bespoke cup of beans to go.

Really cosy and cute coffee shop, definitely one of the best in Edinburgh. The staff are so friendly and the food was delicious. I would recommend it to anyone in the area :)

Lovely small coffee shop. The food is nice quality and made in front of you. The shop has a nice atmosphere and local employees.

Bagels are delicious and they have very good coffee! - The best I’ve tried in Edinburgh in a couple of months! - The place is small but nice inside. The only problem is that they don’t have wifi. I wanted to stay longer and work, but I needed internet.

This coffee shop has too confined space.
The black coffee was watery, not terribly pleasant, and the Bruschetta served wasn't that palatable either.
M. C.
Lovely staff. Great coffee.
Oh, definitely eat the steak bagel. Amazing.
P. S.
Such a cosy, cute, little cafe, where you are almost afraid to enter as you get the feeling you’re entering someone’s home.
Had I lived in Edinburgh, this would definitely be the place where I’d spend my weekend mornings.
The coffee is quite good, the bagel was delicious, and the Italian crepes (with Mascarpone and Nutella) were OK too.
The only thing I did not like was that the dishes were not sparkling clean - maybe something that can be improved in the future.

Amazing little coffee shop, one of the best in the city

Great place for a cup of latte or black coffee. One of the best I’ve had in Edinburgh.

Looking for somewhere relaxed to start my day, what a great find this was. One of the few places open from 8am. Had the breakfast crepe and a tasty almond milk flat white. The roast of the coffee was great, so many places go for such a dark roast it all starts to taste burnt! This coffee was fab. Highly recommend to anyone looking for good coffee, fresh delicious crepes and a nice chilled vibe.

Some of the best coffee I've had! Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is very comforting and cosy!

Lovely little place - the coffee is fabulous, the food is amazing and the staff are even nicer! Thanks for a lovely breakfast :)
J. N. C.
Good coffee and they change the blend of the coffee every once in a while. Cozy atmosphere and nice music makes this place a nice getaway from the franchises.

So happy I came across Format on a walk through the Meadows one day! It’s definitely the best coffee I’ve had in Edinburgh and I wish I would have found it months earlier. I make it over on a day off for a great latte and chat with the owner.
C.
Excellent coffee shop, went there to have a mozzarella bagel - the best bagel and coffee in the entire neighborhood! A+++++
M. R.
This was the best crepe I have had in Edinburgh so far. It's a nice cosy spot and the man serving us was very easy-going and kind. Definitely recommend for afternoon!
M.
Really, really, really good coffee, perhaps the best overall I've had in Edinburgh (a city where there are challenging comparisons!). We tried a long black and a flat white and both the quality and the execution were top notch. The coffee preparation area is a spectacle in itself, a neatly organised mini-laboratory.
N. H.
Please tell staff and easy dining. We went for a quick breakfast of French toast and salmon on toast.
F. W.
Really exceptionally good coffee and great friendly service. I'll definitely be coming back.
A. G.
Very good coffee I think was the one filter/drip coffee. Lovely cakes best in the town especially nutella cheesecake and good choice of vegan cakes and brownies (miso brownie). Great staff.
D. E.
Best coffee in the UK,
The custom machine is epic and the owner is a really nice guy. Very knowledgeable about all things coffee and most importantly makes a great one.

Fresh and high quality

Lovely proper good coffee was had this morning and great guy.
M. M.
Had a lovely time the other day catching up with friends over cake and coffee, very relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, cosy, will be trying the lunch menu next time, great to support my local independent coffee house :)

They have some stiff competition next door with Cult, but having been a few times I can say this place has a solid combination of good quality coffee, food, customer service and comfortable interior (when it’s allowed to be open). Owner cares about quality.
A. S.
Best crepes and coffee in town. The owner (Andrew) has a fantastic knowledge of coffee which he is willing to share with whomever is interested. The cafe is small and cosy - a really nice place to read or hang out with friends - and Andrew has decorated the interior with lots of homely items. Highly recommend any of the iced coffees which are not on the menu but are SO TASTY. Expect nice vibes and good conversation if you are in the mood.
His new assistant is cute too. Her lattes leave a little to be desired however.
J. P.
A nice cafe that is refreshingly different from the crowd. Small but nicely laid out with many books on tables and shelves for customers to browse. Coffee is excellent and the crêpes and bagels freshly made and delicious. Kitchen is open plan and clean. Toilet is basic but also clean. Well worth a try
J. L.
You can taste fantastic, fruity and balanced flat white here.
G. C.
Had great wraps and bagels. Very good taste and found the owner always open to requests. If you wanna choose your own toppings and good coffee too. Relaxed and enjoyed food.
M. C.
Perfect little hang out with friends in this cosy and quaint coffee shop. Andrew is lovely and very passionate about his coffee, the coffee is amazing, along with his freshly prepared bagels and cakes to choose from.
G. B.
Actually just the best coffee in Edinburgh. The owner really knows his stuff about coffee, and hand selects each (delicious) baked good that he sells from a wide range of bakeries. Everything one would want in a coffee shop. I have been a patron for three years, and I hope to be for many to come.

This cafe is a little gem of Edinburgh. The very cosy atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious coffee make it a great place to socialise or study. Coffee is hands down the best I have ever had and the food is delicious. I especially like the New York Deli sandwich - very fresh. This place feels very personal and deserves its future success.
B. B.
Been a regular here since I found it, excellent taste in coffee with a friendly owner and great food, hands down my favourite coffee spot in Edinburgh
J. S.
Just visited Half 8 with family for some coffee and cakes. Coffee is amazing. One of best coffees I've ever had. Cakes homemade and gluten free. Very good! Next time gonna try soup or sandwich. Looks very nice. I would recommend this place for it's cozy atmosphere good food and great coffee.
K. A.
I have to say this place is one of the best coffee shop here in Edinburgh. The place is very comfy like home, great coffee, delicious crepes especially the Italian with chocolate and cheese, finally that AMAZING New York Deli and Steak Melt Sandwich with that hollandaise sauce will just melt in your mouth. Definitely, recommend this place to everyone :)
M. F.
Friendly little local coffee place, nice place to go.
Also does retail bags of coffee and teas and associated stuff like filters.

This is a super-cute cosy and quirky cafe - a great addition to Buccleuch Street and quite a challenging bit of the street with competition on both sides and where you have to work quite hard to make it work. Plaudits to the owner who has made it beautiful inside. Great coffee and cakes seem good too. No croissants a few times I have been in. Crepe was pretty nice - maybe a small side salad would be good.
Also - the owner is very welcoming and friendly - clear that he really cares abut the place and its vibe.
While I love the outside it did take me a long time to realise what the cafe is actually called - I feel this should be made clearer outside and inside - this will only strengthen the business if people really know easily what the place is called.
Small negative - WC was a bit untidy and could maybe have been slightly cleaner.
M. G.
Super smooth mocha and great staff!!
M. K.
I honestly love this place. Probably one of the newest additions to the Newington coffee scene, it has already become a firm favourite of mine. Half 8 is quite small (6 tables) and very cosy, with plenty of reading material (various coffee table books, national geographics, etc.) scattered around the tables allowing you to peruse at your heart's content. They serve (excellent) sweet and savoury crepes throughout the day, a breakfast menu until 11.30am, a sandwich/melts lunch menu after than, and offer cakes and sandwiches in a display. Service is always been friendly and personable and there is wifi available. Whether you want a relaxed catch-up with friends over a coffee or fill your gob with delicious food while checking out Alpen Interiuers, this place does not disappoint
s. k.
Warm cozy and unique cafe with an arty homemade feel. Best coffee in edinburgh and the food is really good too. The atmosphere is amazing and the “half 8 vibes” sound track is bangin. Andrew is really lovely and his new barista is okay too ;)
Definitely worth a visit!!!
R. T.
Really friendly atmosphere , never get tired of being here. Good place for both working and socialising.Food is really good, everything freshly prepared by Andrew. The coffee is amazing, u can buy the beans too.
J. R.
Such a great little cafe. Cosy seating, kooky interior and super friendly staff. The toasted sandwiches are delicious and the coffee is pretty great too. An awesome spot for brekkie or to just grab a coffee and read a book or chill with friends.
A. G.

C. N.
A nice small specialty coffee shop with a real good latte. They only offer takeaway for now and I'm looking forward to sit down on their cozy seating area
J. A.
Very nice small cozy cafe, with a relaxing quiet atmosphere and Wifi. Here you can get great tasting sandwiches and melts, simply excellent coffee (they serve Artisan Roast), and interesting soft drinks. Great service, very friendly.
V. V.
Delicious coffee and friendly service. The cakes looked heavenly. Not really for large groups - the seating is limited, but the coffee is great for take away too.
G.
An amazing place with a very calm, retro feeling vibe to it. The coffee was very nice, and the food was absolutely amazing. The staff were also very nice and energetic, creating a nice contrast to the rest of the cafe. Will definately visit again
K. A.
Best coffee in town! Great chap, he knows so much about coffee! Always had great chats! Keep your amazing work up
A. B.
Not just crepes! They also serve paninis and sandwiches as well. I had the Eastern Veggie, with pickled beet root, rocket, and some of the best goat cheese. I ended up walking 20 minutes across town the next day to get it again. Definitely recommend!
J. D.
Small and charming. The wool blanket covered seating is great and the coffee is well made. Fantastic spot for a caffeine and light breakfast fill up.
V. L.
Mmm the chilli hot choc is really good and served with a smile! (Andrew??) is very friendly and generous — thank you very much from Vicky and Sonia!!
S. B.

Top notch coffee, good food and cake! Also the owner is what makes this place! Friendly and willing to have fun with the customers, but not invasive or anything. Only had good feelings

Half8 has become my local. A welcome, laid back, comfortable space. Coffee is very good, and the cakes baked by "the lady upstairs" are amazing.

This shop became one of my favorite spots for a coffee in Edinburgh. Coffee is great, if you go there, you will feel like home, there are not many places that will give you that feeling.
