Reviews of Leo's Beanery
M. M.
The food is delicious, and the setting is beautiful. We were told they were full first, but when we asked do sit outside they said yes. It is confusing that you must pay first (they ask for a tip before service) and then take a seat. If you ask for extra food you have to go back up and pay, this could be changed! The waitress was very good, and allowed me to order coffee at the table and pay later, but this is not a normal process.

A wonderful spot in Edinburgh for coffee and a seemingly endless choice of brunch options.
Dog friendly, baby friendly, adult friendly — and generally very friendly place!
I had the vegetarian breakfast (avocado, mushroom, spinach, and halloumi on toast, and added some bacon. A large portion and every mouthful was delicious — especially their home made ketchup.
Great for families, and seems very well suited to people with dietary requirements. The staff went out of their way on a very busy day to be incredibly accommodating.
I am yet to try the Croq-mon-scone but it sounds amazing and gives me one of many reasons to return.
T. M. M.
Probably my favourite place in the area for breakfast. Can’t beat their roll with black pudding and egg. The only downside is it can get incredibly busy
S.
I’ve been here multiple times. They offer delicious brunch and coffee/cake snacks. I recommend the toasted coconut bread.
O. C.
Lovely ambiance and menu! The food was fresh and inventive, even the toasts had a great taste.
We could not choose among the many options of warm breakfast, savoury scones, croques etc so we ended up having way too much. And we loved everything! It was warm enough to sit outside; the tables are below the road level and feel quite cozy. One of the best meals in Edinburgh ❤️!
S. S.
Very nice place to take a rest for coffee /tea etc. great place to take photos as well. loved the seat outside.
M. v. L.
Amazing breakfast and lunch place! Delicious coffee and a large tea selection. Great service (super friendly and quick) and overall atmosphere. The terrace looked really nice as well but unfortunately for us the temperature was a bit too cold still. Would definitely come here again when we visit Edinburgh!
S. C.
Leo's is busy ... because its damn good. Be patient, enjoy the cozy atmos and wonderful food. Porridge with fruit compote and honey is a must and they brew delicious coffee. And I'm fussy about my coffee!!! Cannot recommend highly enough.
W.
Super cosy cafe with hearty food.
The staff are very friendly and the place is clean and nice.
I had the banana bread for brunch and it was delicious!
We also had egg royal and it was super tasty!
Loved their coffee too!
F. B.
Great customer service and super friendly. Brownie was delicious, hot chocolate was with real chocolate. Food was amazing.
I recommend this place.
S. G.
The cutest most beautiful coffee shop we visited in our 4 day stay in Edinburgh.
I. R.
Charming little coffee shop, much bigger than it looks though! The food was very very nice, lots on the menu that looked delicious. Highly recommend the bacon roll! Will come back again
J. L.
I thought this place was superb, the staff were really friendly, we visited 3 time, twice in one day and the other on our last day in Edinburgh, they remembered us from a couple of days ago, wouldn't have expected that.
I can honestly say this was the best coffee I've ever had, it was so nice. The food was amazing, nothing to fault at all here!
Its a little way out of the centre (not far) but well worth the visit!
E. F.
Very cute bakery, food was amazing, staff were very friendly
M. C.
Amazing food, from the poached egg toasts to banana bread, everything was delicious! Service was great and fast. Highly recommend!
P. E.
Really cute cafe! As soon as we entered the staff greeted us and helped us find a table. Our coffee arrived quickly, and was delicious. Only slight problem is it was fairly hot & steamy inside and it took a good few mins for my glasses to de-fog. Is this helpful info in a review? Unsure!

I came last year here with my friend, we were traveling around scotland and I was really delighted with the amazing food, environment and friendly staff! Thank you for this experience, made our trip even better! ❤️✨
A. N.
This is a very nice coffee shop with excellent breads and breakfast options. You start with the basic and can add items. So if you dont like a Full Scottish breakfast, you can have a bespoke version.
S. M.
Wonderful gem of a cafe. Lovely, fresh food & great coffee all delivered by friendly staff. Keep it to yourself or youll never be able to get a seat!
M. E.
The staff here are delightful, I felt so welcome. The flat white I had was great and the scone was to die for. The compote that they put on the yogurt was super delicious. I highly recommend supporting this local coffee shop!
A. T.
Great little place, good quality coffee, breakfast very good. We went for the Granola and Muffins w/bacon. Excellent. Highly recommend.
S. G.
Most incredible soya flat white, delicious Parma ham and cheddar “croque-mon-scone”, exquisite smoked salmon eggs royale, accompanied by a light but indulgent banana bread with mascarpone and berries, all enjoyed in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Probably going to come back tomorrow!
P. S.
Very friendly staff, excellent Food, different options for Gluten Free etc.
Really enjoyed our stay there!
H.
Always a good place for a light lunch. The veggie croque scone is a firm favourite. Get in early for the scones. It's the fastest cake:)
J. G.
Lovely cafe down stairs, with really welcoming staff. great good and coffee. All ages inside and very accomodating with children.
A. W.
Wonderful and hidden little cafe which does amazing cheese scones and the best coffee! Perfect.
K. K.
Best breakfast in Edinburgh. Try the croque-mon-scone.
M. F.
Good food, card payment. Polite weitress. Cozy and nice. Little bit cold inside.

📣Overall: 19/20
📅01.12.18📍@leosbeanery, Edinburgh
🍽What we ate: Tilds - Brunch Special (fancy avocado toast with tomatoes and poached eggs), Rex/Helen - porridge with cinnamon and maple toasted nuts, seeds & fruit, Helen - bacon sandwich, John/Jayne/Rex - Leo’s favourite with assorted sides such as spinach, bacon, tomatoes, John - fruit scone, Split - (unphotographed) banana bread with fruit compote
*********************************
Congratulations for making it through the longest “What we ate” section of the blog to date! That’s what happens when you sit down with 5 hungry people, some of whom have a full day of Christmas shopping to fuel. Leo’s Beanery was selected due to its convenient location to the Xmas shoppers’ hotel, but it really turned out to be an unheralded gem. Just around the corner from the much-heralded Pantry, we think this outstrips it’s famous neighbour.
*********************************
Breakdown:
👩🏼🍳Taste 5/5 - Given we tried more or less half the menu, it is all the more remarkable that we all totally loved it. When people are even commenting on just how tasty the porridge is, you know you’re on to a winner. The hot drink selection was also great - with “melt in the cup” hot chocolates the overwhelming headline.
👀Presentation 4/5 - A good 4, but a 4 all the same. Really nice and no complaints, but nothing that really “wowed.” The savoury items on suave black dishes were very pleasing, but perhaps more could have done on the porridge.
🌟Vibe 5/5 - An absolute treat. The staff were lovely and the menu very comprehensive. Special mention to our waitresses who coped with us ordering lots of dishes with lots of alterations throughout our sitting. An authentic Bakelite radio perched near our table also garners extra kudos.
💷Value for money 5/5 - We all know we ordered a lot of food. And a lot of drinks. And put quite a few extra bits and bobs on those food and drinks. But it was still fantastic value. (Especially in comparison to other nearby brunch spots). Our tip would be to get yourselves there soon before they realise they can up their prices!
S. C.
So good we’ve come two days in a row! The soya flat white is one of the best I’ve ever had and the croque-mon-scone is mouth-wateringly good! Highly recommend the smoked salmon bagel too!
D. S.
The best carrot cake I've ever eaten!! A nice coffee shop really cosy with a friendly staff. Bonus point: the girls restrooms hold he cutest graffitis.
6.20£ for a slice of a carrot cake and a hot chocolate.
S. B.
Leo's was excellent in the past, but lately they seem to have reduced the portion sizes a lot and lost a bit of their quality in their home made goods. We also wanted to sit at a booth because we ordered 4 entry's for 2 people (because of the small portions!) but they said we couldn't sit 2 people in a booth because its meant for 4 people, then less than 2 minutes later, they seated 2 people at the booth who only ordered coffee. Little things add up unfortunately.
F. M.
Super cozy and lovely breakfast. Good selection and great coffe. Waitress was a bit grumpy and rigid. Bad ventilation.
J. C.
Recommended by my airbnb host, went there for brekkie after a super early flight from Paris. Really made my whole day with their melted cheese scone.
J. M.
Nice little coffee shop, good food quick turnover on tables
D. K.
Amazing coffee and hot chocolate 😍 Superb food! Muffins and poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, absolutely fantastic 🤩
K. B.
We love this place. The staff are so warm and friendly. The salmon bagel is my personal favourite and the coffee is so tasty.
A. B.
Breakfast was 10/10! The Eggs Benedict was incredible and the coffee fantastic. Such lovely staff and a great place for brunch.
M. W.
Lovely staff lovely coffee lovely scone. Just what you want. Small inside so busy happens quickly. Space to sit out lovely.
V. S.
Nice place. Good breakfast and granola. Coffee however wasn't as good as.
M. N.
Great vibe, friendly service and homey atmosphere. Superb hearty breakfast full of ingredients!
J. H.
First of all, great atmosphere. It feels calm and relaxed, and playful inside thanks to the colors, furniture, and waitresses. Second, the drinks were great-fizzy drinks, teas, and Italian espressos! Third, the food was excellent. It felt like farm to table with delicious healthy ingredients, with interesting combinations of flavors. We would definitely come back and try something different off the menu!!
M. D.
Tasty salad, nice place and nice staff. Sandwich was reasonable but the Cajun chicken wasn’t very Cajun-y. I wasn’t told the hot chocolate needed a stir so it was just hot milk until I stirred the lump of chocolate in and even then it was only a bit chocolatey.
R. B.
First place we visited during our stay in Edinburgh. Popped in for a coffee and some brunch as we were walking from the apartment into the city. So glad we did! Although it was busy (generally a good sign), we were seated quickly by staff and served in good time. Food choice and quality was excellent. Had a couple of really nice coffees for good measure. Pretty arty kind of place with quite a chic vibe. Based on this experience, I can safely recommend.
M. S.
Been a few times recently and I intend to come back again. Lovely atmosphere, delicious food, and the BEST brownies I’ve had so far. Thoroughly recommend a visit!!
L. H.
A lovely little coffee shop , great service and coffee from Amber. We will return.
S. L. (.
Flipping love this place. Really lovely coffee and a great variety for brunch. Usually get a takeaway after yoga but have been for brunch in big groups and small and they've always been lovely and accomodating. Food has been lovely. Highly recommend.
P. P.
Lovely atmosphere, great staff but unfortunately, after we left the cafe we smelled of food. Obviously the extractor fans are not very effective. I have long hair and it absorbed all the cooking smell. Had to go back to the hotel, wash my hair and then continue the tour around the city.
Would go there again if there was better ventilation.
J. S.
Quaint and delicious. Reasonably priced food and perfect atmosphere for a hot chocolate on a rainy day.
C. D.
The best café in town. Delicious coffee, unbelievable baking (mostly gf too) including award winning brownies all in the surroundings of a most comforting atmosphere. Meet your friends, read a book and settle in. Highly recommend brunch. A must visit.
C. S.
Great cafe offering breakfast, lunch or just coffee and cake. We visited after seeing that it was dog friendly. Staff were friendly and welcomed our pooch. Had lovely americano and fresh juices for the kids. Lovely brownies and pecan pie. Nice feel and atmosphere. Defo recomend!
M. L.
Cute little cafe I'm glad we stumbled by! The staff were lovely, the coffee was great and the place has a beautiful atmosphere. I recommend!
J. G.
Good coffee, a bit on the expensive side, but place is cozy and service very nice as well
A. W.
Great food and great service! Thanks!
B. S.
Friendly staff, quirky furniture and setting, nice coffee, good food and very reasonable prices.
I booked a table for 8 for brunch just a few days in advance having tried other places in the area and don't regret it. The room at the back is great for groups while the front of the café is ideal for 2/4 people.
I can recommend the Eggs Benedicte as they were tasty although I have to say they were nothing out of this world.
They also have a good selection of homemade cakes and local products for sale.
C. D.
Best coffee I've had in a while! Swaggg!
C. B.
I stayed in the Airbnb above Leo’s Beanery, so it was great having them literally on my doorstep. It’s a comfortable coffee shop in the basement of this building, with great coffee and a very contemporary feel. The food looked great although sadly I didn’t get the chance to try it.
G.
Good espresso coffee. Shame that there is no pour over option. Food was tasty (I had the frittata) but the portion was a but small. Nice feel inside. Some outside seating too. Staff were nice
R. T.
Really delicious, fresh, simple food with outstanding gluten-free bread, muffins etc. Excellent coffee & a great selection of quality teas. Cosy and characterful - but also popular! At the weekend, arrive early, or make a reservation.
M. K.
This is such a warm and friendly place. My wife and kids and I have been visiting irregularly since not long after they first opened. We have never experienced anything other than cheery, friendly staff and owners, excellent coffee and excellent food. There are other local places that we have visited irregularly over a couple or three years, but this is the only one we are still visiting ten years later.
A. M. S.
Good selection of gluten free pastries
m. b.
thank you so so much for looking after my very large group last sunday at about 3 minutes notice. We were a difficult lot, and you served us with such kindness and professionalism. The lunches were great, the coffees and cakes super great! thank you so much, we had a lovely time.
M. B.
Coffee is actually really tasty. However not a good place for takeaway coffees as you have to wait for a long time. Seems they simply put you in the same queue as people having their coffee and food there.
L. R.
A delightful cafe in the New Town, their aubergine bagel and carrot cake are to die for. These guys know their coffee as well and all the staff are supremely friendly and most often very happy.
It is bohemian chic with some outside tables and very kid friendly. Also free WIFI which makes a handy freelance meeting spot.
J. B.
Great food and service there. Had breakfast there and enjoyed it.
J. S.
Food was good. Staff was friendly. But it was FREEZING. They had to keep the door open because it was little smokey. I think it’s time to invest in an exhaust fan. I shouldn’t have to wear a winter coat and a winter hat indoors to eat a little breakfast.
M. F.
Mismatched furniture and a counter full of home-baked cakes, add the artisan roast beans and a perfect cappuccino and that's my Saturday afternoon sorted. This cosy, family run cafe is in a perfect location if you fancy a cup of coffee after a walk in New Town or Stockbridge. I also love their soup and lunch options. Highly recommended!
F. “. π.
Very cozy spot for a breakfast in Edinburgh. There is a varied menu available to choose from.
Most of the dishes are vegetarian or with fish.
Eventhough, as the most places in the city - it doesn't look very big, it has quite a spaceous room in the back to also host bigger groups up to 6.
The room is also right next to the bakery of the Beanery where one can see the place the home made sourdough, cookies, brownies and cakes are made when enjoying a delivious breakfast.
Definitely a good start into the day.
Z. P.
Leo's Beanery is a charming little coffee place that makes you feel instantly at home. The owners Joe and Marie treat you like an old friend from the moment you walk in... and with such lovely cakes and customer service, you can easily see why their regulars return time and again. I made short work of their espresso cake and a smooth mocha... but stayed longer just to enjoy the relaxed, happy atmosphere.
n. p.
Edinburgh has some really excellent independent coffee houses and this is one of them. I had some kind of delicious frosted coffee drizzle cake and an Americano and it was of the highest quality. The massive caffeine/sugar crash that took me down me some 90 minutes later was also pretty special. Very handy for Stockbridge/New Town area.
B. R.
Best coffee of our trip, delicious food too. Would recommend to anyone looking for a local option to start their day right
J. P.
Great place for coffee and cake.I am espresso drinker and ordered cappuccino and was lovely.
C. M.
Hidden away on the backstreets of Edinburgh, this cosy little cafe is clearly a favourite with the locals considering it's always busy despite being far from the tourist spots. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is cosy and inviting, the food is delicious and the coffee is great. If it had WIFI, I'd be happy to stay all day!
D. M.
Fantastic independent café. One of the best breakfast/lunch places in Edinburgh. Reasonably priced, service is excellent, lots of choices on offer and the food is delicious.
S. L.
Lovely wee place, with wonderful cakes, bread and coffees and very special hot chocolate for chilly Edinburgh days (that REAL chocolate stuff on a stick slowly melting in hot milk...mmmm). I agree with Zoe that this could well be the friendliest cafe in the city - the owners and staff go out of their way to make you feel at home.
A. N.
Visited three mornings in a row for breakfast. Great coffee, scrummy food and lovely friendly service. Would recommend.
A. H.
Really lovely spot, amazing selection of gluten free bakes and really friendly staff.
E. M.
very nice cafe, good food friendly staff and there was a nice dog when i was in :) my partner said it's some of the best black pudding he's ever had
C. S.
Beautiful small underground coffee shop. Had an espresso and a spicy apple cake, both were delicious. Highly recommended!
a.
Fantastic breakfast, best banana bread ever!!!
M. S.
Amazing coffee shop! Loved the atmosphere and decoration. Service was great and the staff very kind. Congratulations !
L. A.
Robert makes the best mochas. The atmosphere is excellent. I've spent quite a few hours on holiday having coffee and reading a book. Thanks so much!
B. F.
A beautiful little place the breakfasts are fantastic. Nice cakes and they know how to make good tea. An art that seems to be fading.
I. Č.
Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, good cake and fantastic coffee. Dog friendly with a variety of games and books for entertainment, also a good working spot. Will come back.
B. S.
Delicious breakfast and coffees - highly recommend this gem.
K. S.
Extremely local to me this is a regular place for coffee and lunches when working at home. It does get very busy so service is sometimes a bit slow. They do a very good burger but no fries!
G. M.
THE BEST CHOCOLATE FUDGE BROWNIE IVE EVER HAD. Mmmmmmmmm that was delicious savoured every bite! Coffee good too but five stars just for the brownie WOW :0)
A. K.
Nice little cafe for breakfast or brunch. There is a good selection of sandwiches, bagels, soups and daily specials. Very friendly staff.
J.
It was very busy and it took a while for a table to be cleared for us and we had to approach the staff to be served, but food is very good quality and well presented. Good location too.
J. H.
Great coffee and amazing scones
L. L.
Lovely breakfast/brunch stop with a range of choices catering for both meat-lovers and vegetarians. The place is dog friendly too :)
J. K.
Ambience and staff was top. It's a good place to have a coffee, but I wouldn't recommend the food there.
N. C.
Lovely little cafe. Been twice, the food has been really good each time. Coffee is good too

E. B.
Perfect place for breakfast on the way to city center!
J. B.
After trying several places for brunch on a Saturday we ended up here. It was very busy but both the food and coffee was great.
J. N.
Nice place. Good portions on the muffins, but they were slightly underdone! And the cups etc were a little bit dirty.
P. B.
Fantastic place for brunch.
O. N.
Great coffee, nice staff, cute spot
M. “. C.
Lovely, welcoming staff, cosy atmosphere and good coffee/hot cocoa. What more could you ask for on an overcast and windy winter day.
M. B.
Food is a bit expensive, nice coffee, quite cold since they open the door even in winter if the kitchen heats up
S. K.
The coffee is amazing but the breakfast I had was ok, had better before. I had the poached eggs and salmon on toast.
G. C.
Really good place. Especially as only cafes open right now. Service, food, coffee & cake. Tick, tick, tick & tick.
R. M.
Everything about this place is good - food selection and quality, coffee, ambiance and staff! Love going here for a treat at the weekend!

(Translated) We were here for breakfast and were not disappointed! We ate poached eggs, bread with butter, black pudding, porridge with compote, espresso (nice strong) and a hot chocolate and everything was homemade! it just tasted incredibly good and you have noticed. The service was very good and so very friendly and nice. It even came to a chat about our vacation. That's probably the most famous hospitality of the scots. The café is further furnished, with old furniture. We are happy to come back any time!

Deutsche Version:
