Reviews of Soutra

Lovely friendly cafe on the A68 great menu, food was lovely and filling. There was a friendly atmosphere in the cafe, staff were welcoming and helpful. The toilet were clean and tidy, covid restrictions were in place for safety. Large free carpark, stunning views from the cafe with large floor to ceiling picture windows. A1

Lovely 'little' place to get a nice bite to eat. Can be very noisy at times due to the acoustics of hard surfaces everywhere.
1 star deducted as the tables need looking at for cleanliness. The rattan style furnishings accumulate every piece of food and dirt in all the little crevices which need seeing to daily.
K. s.
We stopped here on our way up to the east coast of Scotland and it was well worth the stop. The staff are friendly and the food and drink was really lovely. varieties of soup, sandwiches, toasties, jacket potatoes and cakes available. There was also a small specials board available too. premises all very clean, as were the facilities. Definitely be stopping here again if we are passing.
G. V.
Lovely good, friendly staff, and we had good weather, so sitting outside had lovely views.
D. D.
We went late on, but service was good, friendly and attentive. Vegetarian and GF options. Nice view over the countryside. Handy to stop before pressing on to Edinburgh.
R. K.
Very nice place! We stopped to eat breakfast and it was very tasty. Very good scones and good coffee! Service was also very nice.

Came here back in November after visiting the Soutra Aisle.
I ordered a sandwich and soup combo, which looked like a good deal. The soup was a big bowl of minestrone and I asked for a cheese and pickle sandwich on white bread. The sandwich was really nice, sweet and savoury like a good ploughman’s sandwich. The minestrone soup was not bad, a bit too salty for my personal preference and I needed a break to finish the entire bowl, but did finish it.
The staff are incredibly welcoming and could not have gotten better service.

Great stop-off point in a long journey. Large snack , meal and treat menu. Spacious and a popular place with locals. Always a good sign.
D. T.
Terrific views looking North and the Empire Biscuit was a treat 🤗
L.
Always excellent be it for breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake. Good quality food. Lovely friendly staff too.
J. B.
Excellent late lunch spot with fantastic staff, a great menu and excellent food. It makes _such_ a difference when the people taking the orders, serving etc. are real people with real personalities: it was great!
Anything to take it up another notch? Hmm. If I had to be picky to the extreme, I might say that it could be worth slicing the sausages in half lengthwise to reduce their opportunity to make a bid for freedom out of the far side of the sandwich, but, hey, it's not what you'd call important!
V. Q.
You get a lovely latte and mocha here plus their soup and a sandwich is worth the money and I recommend the fruit scones and cherry and walnut cake
D. H.
Lovely place to stop for a light bite. Beautiful views. Very friendly staff. Was very busy. You have the option to dine inside or outside. I had coronation chicken panini served with side salad. I would highly recommend this place if your driving past, definitely pop in.
C. N.
Had the best sandwich I have ever had in my life and it's a long life 😊 staff excellent and service quick. Will certainly return and highly recommend 👍😘
L. M.
Lovely cafe. Great home made soups...and the views towards East Lothian and Fife are fantastic
h. c.
Fabulous. Enjoyed the lentil and bacon soup and sandwich. Coffee good and service great. Very quick and all food enjoyable. Would go again
G. H.
Lovely coffee shop with a good selection of delicious cakes and food. The vegetarian haggis breakfast roll was just wanted I needed before starting work in the area. Lovely little area inside the coffee shop for children to play too.
J. A.
Nice little cafe tucked away on the A68. Wouldn't mind a slightly broader menu, but what they do they do well. Will be even better when the work going on in the surrounding grounds is complete and the view gets even better.
G. H.
Lovely place with spectacular views. All cakes are home baked, the coffees are lovely.
And the breakfast sets you up for the day.
D. F.
Good selection of cakes and slices. Nice views out over the farm towards Fife. Tables and chairs seem quite close together making it awkward to move through the cafe (maybe people just had their chairs well out from the table causing lack of space).
J. R.
Great food and service. We went about 1.30 so avoided the lunch rush but they seemed very organised. Cheesecake portions looked huge!!
M. Y.
Great cafe/restaurant the food was excellent and plentiful, fast efficient friendly service, we sat at a window with incredible views .
H. M.
Good coffee and excellent service, good have been a bit warmer, maybe it was because I was sitting near the door
J. L.
Lovely little cafe, plenty of space to eat inside or out (new tables being erected while we were there) with lovely views. Scones delicious with plenty of fruit. Would visit again if in the area but was on holiday in langholm, so just passing through.
G. C.
We stopped for tea and cake. The cake selection was fantastic and I had a piece of fruit tea loaf. Magnificent. Brilliant views that stretch for miles
G. S.
Good food, good device, with lovely surrounding
M. D.
A really nice coffee house, staff are friendly and welcoming and it's bright, spacious and clean inside.
The full Scottish breakfast was a bit more expensive than I would normally pay but it was fresh, delicious and filling (as pictured, came with 2 toast/hot drink and a selection of jams etc on the side) I would be quite happy to go again.
Mind the pot hole at the enterance though!
K. B.
What a surprise. It was much better on inside had lovely views of countryside. Food was lovely and staff friendly.
M. G.
Fantastic find - everything was great with lovely staff & delicious food!!!
A. C.
I frequently stop in from Kelso to Edinburgh it's like my pit stop with so much to look fwd to..
Everything is freshly made to orders. Freshly ground Coffee or leaf tea to fridge water to fizz drinks.
Toasties are my go to.. with a slice of cake of their amazing fresh cream meringues..
The staff are very friendly always welcoming and nothing is to much bother..
Plenty access for wheelchair users too.. a lovely stop between where you're coming from to going to.. or in reverse!
So lucky having this amazing place on my route..highly recommend to you all!
Take away is also provided for too.... 😄🙏🌞💐
A. S.
Self made scones and delicious lunch options. Staff is very friendly. Thank you!
G. S.
Enjoyed the lentil and bacon soup it was delicious 😋 very friendly, efficient staff.
C. W.
Visited for a quick break on the way up to Scotland. Opened up early for us which was appreciated. Friendly staff and customer service. Good cake selection with a cup of tea. Reasonably priced.
S. R.
Gluten free – that'll do me! Lovely staff as well. There's a few options where to stop on a long cycle, but this place is the biz and worth making the effort to get to. Ordered a simple sausage sandwich – 4 sausages on two rolls – ya beauty! Just what I needed. Pot of tea with extra hot water and a great selection of (GF) cakes. I normally sit outside and admire the view but too chilly today. I try not to do the same cycle routes but this place pulls me back time and again.
D. M.
Good food but expencive
f. s.
Beautiful views, good food, friendly staff & awesome strawberry tarts!!

K. C.
Lovely bacon rolls, nice coffee and friendly service, very nice stop on the way to your destination
C. D.
Clean, pleasant and well set out with good parking and excellent views. The food is nice but at the higher end of the price scale. A great place to stop when using the A68 heading south after an Edington visit.
G. S.
Great food, great view, relaxing environment
L. J. u.
First time here, wanted a coffee and bite to eat, was not disappointed.
Food with a view 👍😊
K. S.
Have been a few times and never disappointed. Large mugs of coffee, excellent portion sizes, good soup choices, and they preheat the soup bowls. Good selection of cakes, friendly staff.
T. A.
The toastie was tasty enough, friendly too, but it's very noisy, a lot of clatter and such, you have to talk over it, so this adds to the noise factor, but pleasant enough, and very busy most times, we thought it a bit pricey.
D. B.
Lovely cafe with great views. A nice choice of snacks, cakes and drinks. Good, friendly service and plenty of parking.
M. R.
Great staff and food and a lovely place to stop
S. I.
Gorgeous spot to stop. The cafe is so well thought out. And the staff are nothing but friendly and helpful. They serve a wide variety of snacks lite bites to more substantial meals. Absolutely fantastic service and the views are incredible. I will always stop here if I'm on the way through.

Great coffee shop with views when the mist subsides. Good selection of delicious cakes, breakfasts including vegetarian options with veggie haggis and other food. Nice play area inside for young children to play and toilet facilities. Staff were lovely too. There is a loyalty card if you are a regular visitor.

Brilliant wee cafe and restaurant. Inside and outside seating in lovely situation just off A68.

Full menu available for breakfast onwards.

Fabulous lunchtime... no tables available when we got there... waited 5 mins in the car and they phoned us to come in...
Delicious Mushroom soup ... Great value
L. B.
After driving for 2 hours from Pitlochry and having negotiated the Edinburgh By Pass this was a most welcome place to take a break on our journey south. The coffee and home made cakes were excellent and the service quick and friendly. There was also the bonus of superb views out over the East Lothian countryside. There was also easy access from the road into an ample parking lot. Soutra is now logged with us as a regular stop off point in the future.
R. A.
Good food service good ase well
K. G.
Friendly staff, great selection of cakes to choose from. Other food looked great too
L. A.

S. A.
Lovely coffee shop. Portions were very big and good value for money. Staff were lovely. This was our second visit and we will be back xx
S. I.
What can I say. As a very keen cyclist this is one of the friendliest bunch of staff I’ve come across. Quick to recognise us from previous visits and always interested in where we’ve come from or where we’re going. Suffice to say we come fairly often on our trips over Soutra aisle, The bacon is to die for and the granary rolls are always nice and freshly baked. Since I don’t want too look too large in my Lycra and hi viz I can’t comment on the cakes and scones though they do look wonderful. As for prices “you pay your money and make your choice” Highly recommended. Oh ! and one of the best views of East Lothian you’re likely to get.
k. m.
Friendly staff & good selection food & drink.
l. H.
Nice coffee and cakes. This place used to have a small children's area which was the reason we would stop there. Disappointing to see that this has been removed to make way for more tables.
A. S.
Pleasant cafe/restaurant with some outside seating. Great views of the countryside. Only had a coffee and cheese scone but those are highly recommended.
J. B.
Stopped here for a late lunch! Lovely and friendly staff and had one of the best salmon bagels I've ever eaten! Also delicious coffee!
J. K.
This place was the best little surprise for us! The food was more delicious than we could have imagined, and the staff was friendly, kind, and had great humor! Sincerely, the best cup of chai I've had in my life; even after the shot of espresso added! If you're traveling through like us, stop here. You most likely won't regret it!
F. B.
Amazing cakes. Worth stopping for
J. M.
A welcome stop at a lovely location. The food is good, varied, reasonably priced and fresh. The staff are very well prepared to cope with the latest Covid regulations and the tables etc are sanitised to a high standard compared with some places. There is good access for less abled users and sufficient parking.
T. K.
Lovely café - tasty cakes and drinks, staff friendly. Lovely views! Also seem to be taking a very sensible approach to the pandemic - with a one-way system, screens, widely spaced tables etc.
s. m.
The best cafe and location for views over East Lothian and Fife on the A68. Great for Art and Food. Service top notch. Would recommend the breakfast rolls and the gingerbread!
J. S.
What a fantastic place to stop. We were served by Meg who went the extra mile to check that I was OK to have the soup, I'm very allergic to certain ingredients but it was no bother to Meg to check everything was OK for me. All the staff we saw were very friendly and happy. Food fantastic, beautiful scenery and a very clean establishment, we will definately return
J. Y.
We had a lovely family catch up for lunch. Menu is varied and we had haggis and cheese panini rolls.
I. M.
I do like this cafe, food is good and the staff are great, however it could really do with some interior decor. Feels kind of like a barn, not cosy.
S.
Fabulous place to stop. Such a refreshing change to motorway services. Fresh, incredibly speedily produced food. Charming staff. Toilet facilities superb. Lovely gifts to buy as souvenirs including items for cancer research uk. Would give 6 stars if we could.
J. A.
Lovely little place to pop in for a coffee or snack. Amazing views. Cheese and Haggis toastie was very nice and comforting.

R. I.
Had a lovely lunch last Wednesday, met up with family. No rush to leave. Will be back 😋 😋 …
S. F.
Lovely coffee and cake quite a view as well
C. L.
Very polite service. Clean. Although very busy there was still room to move.
I only had a lemon and coconut cake and tea.
Very nice tea.
If your heading from Scotland’s capital or just down the A68 in this area this is a great stop.
Child’s play area
High seat
If you are a coach driver I’d ring first as 53+ seater would swamp the place for sure but smaller numbers may be possible.
Also parking for larger than a mini coach might be awkward.
M. S.
This is a find. Fabulous cafe. Great menu. Excellent food. Happy staff. Good carpark. Stop on your journey for a break, you wont be disappointed. Nice view across the Firth of Forth to Fife in the distance. M
H. M.

Modern building with lovely views but day we visited was raining and car park was muddy in places. Short wait to order at counter but staff were pleasant and efficient. Food, that was brought to the table, was fresh and tasty. Toilets clean.
Will visit again on return journey and hope car park has dried out.
A. M.
Wonderful cafe with a great selection of a home made cakes and bakes. Soup and sandwiches is home made, and huge. A lovely spot to stop off and well worth a look at the view back towards Edinburgh. On a clear day you can see all the way back to the River Forth
M. M.

Great, great, great if you don't go you really are missing out, food is terrific, sit in the corner and watch the swallows go back & forward feeding their bairns, brilliant. My apologies for not mentioning in my original review above how lovely and welcoming the staff are at Soutra, along with the lovely food and views they make it what it is.
j. c.
A lovely place to visit with good food and friendly service. Unfortunately they could not provide food for my wife who is gluten and dairy intolerant.
A. M.
The Malteser cake is absolutely gorgeous. The coffee is wonderful and strong, I always go for a Double Espresso in a large cup and a wee jug of boiling water, the coffee was so strong I needed a larger amount of water than usual. There was no bitterness, fantastic 👍👌 …
M. W.
A great place to drop in for a coffee and a cake. The dining room has great views across to the Forth Estuary. It also does great bacon and sausage sandwiches.
A good sign is the steady stream of locals dropping in.
J. H.
It was lovely and the staff were so welcoming despite the fact we arrived near closing time. Coffee and cake delicious. View from the cafe stunning. And it sells art and crafts of local people.
