Reviews of Federation Coffee - Brixton Village
D. M.
Not the best curated place but amazing coffee in vibrant Brixton Village Market some more attention to the interior decor would help ...not many seats inside and only few table outside if you lucky to grab a spot is a very enjoyable place to suck in all the energy of the village market while sipping your coffee and people watching !
They also have some pastry I love their cinnamon ban with moka w/soy as combo!
A. N.
I'm not a fan of drinking coffee outside my home, the culture of coffee drinking became crazy with all these hipster sub-cafe's that charge you a small mortgage for a cup of semi decent brew
Well.... This place is a bit different, the service is excellent, coffee is to die for and even in spite of being in the midst of the most redeveloped part of Brixton (sadly) it still stands strong. I will be coming back as they literally serve drinkable gorgeousness.
N. G.
I tried Federation out because I was passing through Brixton.
I’m glad I did.
This is a proper coffee shop with baristas who are knowledgeable about coffee and can give good advice.
I enquired about purchasing beans to take away and had a chat about the flavour profile of the coffee and the best grind for my Bialetti. The barista then let me try an espresso to ensure I was happy before buying.
The espresso was seriously good. The beans that were ground for me were only roasted a week ago and filled my vehicle with the most beautiful aroma all the way home.
I bought a flat white with Bonsoy and was very impressed. Balanced flavour and creamy texture all the way to the last drop.
My only gripe is that they didn’t have Oat milk (odd for a hipster coffee shop in 2018) and no vegan cake options either.
I’ll be back for the great coffee though.
Keep it up guys.
J. W.
Small coffee shop in Brixton Village but good ambience and good coffee. As a digital nomad, the only thing I feel disappointed is no power outlets. I cannot stay longer. 😂
B. V.
Baristas were super friendly and dedicated to their work. Seemed to really enjoy working there. Love the vibe, outdoor seating is really cool, they give you blankets to use while you're out there!
O. M.
Dec17: Back again this morning ....nothing changes (well the decor has a bit & it's now opening evenings too)...coffee still fab - highly recommend curves. Staff v friendly and chatty despite it being busy. Despite increasing competition & choice this is still Brixton's finest!
Previous: FANTASTIC coffee - despite the brand changing hands. Kept on the high quality and slowly changing things. Have done a fab refurb & staff are certainly more friendly now. Its very busy place which is justified. def worth stoppping by even if you are REMOTELY in the area. there is a tiny version "the hatch" nearby closer to the tube. worth checking out for lunch if you work in the area.
S. T.
The coffee is always amazing (ask what they have on batch brew), the tunes are always banging, the food is simple but very high-quality and the staff are a delight.
M. M.
One of the best places in Brixton for quality coffee - Pastries/cakes aren't too shabby either.
T. H.
I only had a green tea and it was lovely. A cool place to sit too.
P. M.
Very nice place to have breakfast. Banana bread is excellent toast with some butter.
L. H.
I like to visit this beautiful coffee shop after met my close friend there. You must try it at least once. Everything make me satisfied and more than that.
R. D.
Incredible coffee and delicious toasties. Will definitely be back!
F. S.
The coffee is really good. Probably one of the best in the area, which they are probably aware of, which sadly makes service quite rude
S. R. C.
Bocadillos are cool. Bit expensive but cool. Coffee no so good in my opinion, but it is just mine. It will be diverse on every single person. Funny opening times table.
C. d. l. l.
So happy to have my latte today always the best place waiting for my pain au chocolat 😋
F. W.
Wonderful cafe and highly recommended! Our lunch was made with care and attention (even after we’d requested slight tweaks to the listed ingredients). Lattes and teas delicious. Service was prompt and attentive; the staff friendly and efficient. Seating is a mix of indoor and outdoor (under the covered market). Free local area WiFi. We would definitely eat here again.
L. J.
I love Federation Coffee so much! Its part of my Sunday ritual - Earl Grey tea and avocado on toast (but its no ordinary avo on toast... it actually has other ingredients and flavour on delicious bread so don't judge me). Great atmosphere, awesome staff, and part of the heart and soul of Brixton Village. Have made a promise to get take away during lockdown any time Im in Brixton.
B. L.
Banging coffee, sick baristas and great choonz. Curve roasters filter popped off excellent sweetness and body wiv caramel nutty aftertaste. Incredible flatty too with unreal latte art. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED COMING HERE! :D
F. G.
Very good coffee. Very nice place. Jolly nice people. So why the three stars? These nutters are purists. They may have the best coffee in town but how am I supposed to enjoy it without sweetener. Sugar makes my brain buzzy, so that's a no go. I forgot the trauma of my first visit and got caught out again. Unhappily they seem surrounded by other hipster purists and I would have had to go all the way out to the high street to get some, again. So it was either cold coffee or resign myself to the misery of bitter coffee. Sigh. I hate purists. Luv franc
T. B.
Service was very good, but the coffee was average and their choice of oat milk was terrible (Minor figures). My girlfriend's green tea was not brewed and given in a builders mug, which she wasn't happy about
L. E.
Service takes a while when they're only moderately busy and some (not all!) of the staff can be pretty cold too. No one likes that fake, patronising over-friendliness, but I think when you're paying for goods, a welcoming smile and some positive body language is definitely going to improve the experience. You're ripped off if you ask for soy milk. I hate that. The food is well priced though. And the coffee is good quality
M. D.
Decent coffee, tasty breakfast and friendly staff. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. It is quite small though so be prepared to wait for a table.
D. G.
Always good coffee and nice wee spot to relax and watch all the wonderful people of Brixton
B. V.
The best Brixton has to offer.
On many occasions I've come in and had the most consistently delicious coffee, great service and simple, tasty, well-priced food.
Everything about this place is as casual as you'd want it to be and it's just a friendly place to get a great coffee.
M. N.
Probably the best espresso I've had in London. I had my first Federation espresso a few days ago and again today, and yup... it's really good. It has a distinct richness and sweetness to it. I enquired about their blend. Apparently it's a blend and a good one at that: 60% Serra do Cigano from Brazil and 40% Huye Mountain. Strongly recommend just ordering a double espresso and enjoy it as it comes. No adulterations, no additives, no extras. Just enjoy and appreciate the coffee for what it is.
L. G.
Friendly baristas, and absolutely wonderful flat white, one of my favorite coffee shop
O.
Great coffee and very knowledgeable staff. If you want to cut the sugar from your coffee I recommend this place. The variety that they have at the moment has a slightly sweet yet characteristic flavour and doesn’t need sugar, in my opinion, even if I have sugar in coffee that I source from elsewhere.
T. Y.
Excellent coffee with very friendly services.
J. I.
Always offering a smile and a great cup of coffee upon arrival I make sure all my friends know of this delightful little place situated in Brixton Village.
As well as this I decided to grab a bag of their Nicaraguan blend from Campbell and Syme to take home, fantastic stuff! My mornings are now complete!
I've read a few negative reviews on here regarding the staff from yonks ago but the past year I've been going in there they seem to deal well with the busy periods and I'm yet to pick up on any negative vibes.
Keep up the good work!
a. c.
If you go here on the weekend get there early, it's always rammed and for good reason!! The coffee is the best to be had in London. Make sure you grab yourself a flat white, and an anzac biscuit - it's amazing! they have a loyalty card system so after a few coffees you can get a free coffee, won't be too hard to fill up, you'll def go back for more.
L. M.
Nice little cafe. Tasty coffee and friendly staff. Just a bit too noisy for me, music was loud. Luckily they have seat outside, which is quieter and better if you want to just relax with coffee and book or talk to friends.
D. J.
The barista was helpful in choosing the coffee. I am not a tea or coffee or any beverage person, so I will of course give a bad judgement. But given what People say about this place, I might have tried a good coffee.
Prices are equal to a Starbucks. But probably better product
J. M. P.
The espresso is to die for, entirely worth any wait and the price.
Usually two beans on offering: the house blend and a rotating "special". The house blend is already very special, but every so often the other choice can be very surprising as well.
Bottom line: if you come to the market during the day, this is where you should grab your coffee.
V. P.
Great place, nice atmosphere, friendly employees. Oh and also the coffee is amazing ;)
A. C.
Extremely good customer service. Coffee blend is on the sour side so may not be everyone’s cup of tea but definitely worth trying ;)
Ps. Their vegan gluten free brownie is to die for.
S. B.
This is the only place in Brixton I've found that can make a decent coffee (aka drip / filter). The sizes aren't great - a bit on the small side - and they could be open late, but the service is always prompt and genial, so that's nice.
E. J.
The cheesecake here is probably the crowning jewel of Federation.
I've always found the coffee can be a little hit or miss, but it may be down to new baristas being trained? Not really sure, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because the cakes are brilliant and the staff are always fairly cool.
Closes pretty early, so don't expect to hit it up at 5:30 and find it still open.
s.
Amazing coffee, lovely staff. Winner winner chicken dinner.
M. K.
Federation has the best coffe in Brixton (possibly even in South London). Aussies and Kiwis take note if you're looking for a good coffee but haven't found one!
P. N.
Great coffee and cakes and loads of toast to choose from if you have a hangover ;) always crowded.
I. R.
Great award winning coffee in a fab location in the heart of the village only let down now by eye watering prices for a toasted sandwich with blue cheese (6 quid) which was unremarkably presented. I don't blame them in some respects for charging waht the market will stand but 6 quid is really pushing the envelope here and whilst I will be certainly back for their amazing coffee I will keep my purse closed for the more expensive add-ons I'm afraid.
B. H.
Best tasting coffee I've had in ages
P. B.
Incredibly good coffee (long black easily one of the best in London), and very friendly baristas. Although it was rather busy, service was quick.
T. M.
Excellent coffee. Best avocado toast in London - captures the freshness of the Australian original, and adds a range of great new flavours.
A. A. M.
Best place for high quality coffee/tea + delicious pastries from best bakery in town. Their toasts and sausage roll (I heard the are helped out by Salon) are to die for.
You can't miss it!!!!!
Z.
Small but perfectly formed independent coffee shop in Brixton Village Market. On this visit tried a slice of Banana bread with a nicely made Cappuccino. Recommended.
V. I.
One of the nicest corners in Brixton market for a great coffee.
Very friendly and helpful service.
Ideal choice for a relaxing brunch or afternoon break.
J. T.
Avocado toast and cheesy tomato croissant were delicious! Iced latte and normal latte very tasty. Be prepared to wait for a bit as sometimes it gets very busy.
N. S.
Hit and miss. GREAT coffee but agree with the rest of the comments re. attitude of the assistants, if the guys got their act together and concentrated on serving great coffee every time I'm it wouldn't receive disappointed reviews...
D. H.
Decent place for coffee. Good food. Only complaint is the coffee usually feels a bit colder than it should.
O. L.
Great coffee, a bit expensive, usually very busy. Staff hit or miss, sometimes super friendly sometimes kinda miserable. Worth it for a decent flat white though
P. J.
Federation coffee is like rocket fuel... after drinking a cup you feel like you have enough energy to go to the moon and back! The staff here are super rad and friendly, love this place to bits.
O. J.
Great coffee, great atmosphere, great team. So much better than the homogenised rubbish elsewhere! Great place with character and good music!
K. B.
Federation is arguably the best coffee in Brixton (those who argue against it tend to favour either San Marino on the high street or Breads Etc, also in the Village). I like Fed because of the flat whites - they're just the right consistency with the perfect balance of milk and coffee.
With loyalty cards on offer, giving me a free coffee for every 6 purchased, and toasted brioche cheese and ham sarnies, you can't lose (unless you visit on a weekend and can't get a seat, that is. It does get super busy).
A. S.
If you're in Brixton Village on the weekend and want a coffee to go, then Federation is the place to visit - their coffee is the best I've had south of the river (and it should be, given the West End prices). The selection of cakes looked equally wonderful. Like most places in Brixton Village, you'll be lucky to get a table at peak breakfast times on the weekend.
S. M.
Best coffee, great service, fantastic people. Loved it
S. P.
Staff are awesome, coffee is great as was the anzac cookie. The main letdown is the lack of wifi. But if you're not a coffice kinda person, that might be great as a break from the digital.
L. O.
Had an excellent espresso and delectable baked good. Were lucky to score a table on a bustling Saturday, and really enjoyed our time.
H. R.
Epitomising the hurly burly of Brixton village, this independent fast-track coffee conveyorbelt is the perfect place to pick up your caffeine on the run.
The coffee is the best I've tasted in London - rich and sweet for the best morning get-up-and-go. Federation's shabby chic decor and no-nonsense service chimes well for Brixton village regulars who want their coffee straight up and strong.
Try one of the homemade Anziac biscuits to go with your latte - and don't even think about trying to get a table at the weekend.
D. L.
Whenever I'm in Brixton, I always make a beeline for this place. Good pastries to start the day and the coffee is on point. Easily my favourite coffee spot in Brixton.
A.
Coffee is very nice but it depends on which member of the staff prepares it. They give you a discount if you bring your own cup (that is of course if whoever is serving you remembers).
J. H.
One of the best cafés I have been to in London! Cheerful place, friendly staff and good music! I highly recommend!
A. S.
Cute little place with nice interiors and helpful, friendly staff. The tables were sticky from other customers and the soya cappuccino curdled which has never happened to me at other cafés. No wi-fi.
B. P.
Coffee is second to none in the area. Smashed avocado on sourdough is incredible. The chili gives it a great kick for breakfast.
D. D.
By far the best coffee in Brixton. Always fresh and delicious, though it does get quite crowded on weekends. Great service, great coffee, and tasty snacks as well.
s. h.
One of the best coffees I've had in London! Food was great too and cozy ambience 👍👍👍
P. S. S.
Great place to grab a quality coffee and watch the hustle of the market go by. Gets very busy on weekends and is pretty small & cosy, so be prepared to wait to get a table.
M. C.
Great spot for a bite to eat and a brew, tucked away in Brixton market. Had a toasted cheese sandwich with a generous amount of stilton, and a latté, for under a tenner.
P. T.
Coffee is great, brownies are fantastic and staff is very friendly. Sit outside and watch Brixton Village life go by. Worth the trip.
I. B.
Lovely coffee shop in Brixton, located in the heart of the market. Staff was super friendly, the service was very fast, it was nice to seat outside and enjoy the market's vibe
M. C.
Amazing coffee. They even have good filter coffee. the pastries are yummy too. not exactly speedy service though
V. M.
Good coffee, however, service can be a little bit inconsistent. Location is superb and perfect for a coffee after brunch in the market.
A. H.
Great cuppa. Remember - as with everything in Brixton Village - to dress warmly in winter! The pastries are also definitely worth it!
J. M.
This was my 3rd stop, as I go on my arounds looking for SW best, the coffee was beautiful sadly the services was not good at all, I will return again
D. O.
Great coffee, not too roasted/smokey and not too oily.
J. H.
Cute little coffee shop in Brixton market. Macchiato was OK but not excellent - a little sour for my tastes - maybe I just caught them on an off day.
N. R.
An iconic coffee shop in Brixton.
Great artisan coffee and selection of pastries in the famous Brixton market.
Worth a trip,
E. W.
My go to for coffee around Brixton Station. They have good batch filter when you can get it and always hard not to get tempted by the snacks
l. s.
The staff are wonderful, the coffee is amazing and the food is delicious ! Never ever stops being excellent.
W. S.
Nice little coffee shop in the heart of Brixton village, nice coffee but the staff could do with some beard nets!
C. B.
Super friendly staff, awesome coffee and oh lord that banana bread - delicious!
L. H.

A. S.
