Reviews of 'The Black Lab' Coffee House
H. R.
Clapham is a risky place for a coffee house. Every few weeks witnesses the opening of a new third wave coffee shop. But Black Lab had been around for sometime. It is still my favourite coffee house in Clapham, possibly one of the best in London. The coffees are always excellent and the baristas are fantastic. They deserve a special praise here. The cafe is very cosy too. The only drawback recently has been the quality of the Pain Au Chocolat. It's very dry and not particularly french or tasty.
But I love their coffee so I will still be here everyday.

I popped in today for some lunch. I only chose it as it was next to my bus stop and there was a long wait for my bus.
Alex and his colleague were both very nice and welcoming. I had the Spanish Expat which was the tastiest sandwich I’ve had in some time. The cakes all looked delicious and I’m definitely going back to try them out.
C. T.
I can’t deny that this is the best coffee in Clapham. I love the shop, food options and the fact that it’s dog friendly! However, I’m always super wary when the coffee shop looks busy as often the service can be very slow. Often waiting so long for a single coffee, I leave feeling frustrated. Would highly recommend for your caffeine fix, give it a try.
R. F.
Fantastic coffee, indie owned with a lovely staff; we stayed till close and they really looked after us and made us feel welcome (even though they were closing up!). Great location by the tube on Clapham High Street too. Definitely worth a visit, take out or not!
C. F.
Best coffee house in Clapham. Staff amazing, makes you feel like Cheers...everybody knows you name. Great selection of cakes, amazing snacks and great coffee choices. All round exceptional experience.Manager/owner charming and no request goes unanswered.
P. C.
This is one of my favourite coffee spots in Clapham Common! I've not had a chance to eat inside yet but this weekend I had lunch in their small area outside the front.
I had the vegan toastie (hummus, avocado, sun blushed tomatoes and basil) which was so good! The sourdough was lovely and crunchy, and the flavours worked really well together, especially the tomato. But unfortunately it was the only vegan thing on their lunch menu. I was really happy to see that inside they had a good selection of vegan cakes and doughnuts (i think there were 4 to choose from), but I would really like to see another vegan lunch dish. That's why the review is 4 stars, rather than 5.

Not the biggest space, but it's a great spot to grab coffee/lunch/work from for a few hours in the afternoon.
I stopped in in the late afternoon and had a delicious lunch (plus a great muffin) and was able to work in a quiet environment for 2 hours before they closed
L.
Best hot chocolate and coffee in Clapham Common. Always wonderful and kindest staff, you decide your own salad, free wifi, good music, dogs are always welcome - the name is Black Lab (labrador).
E. M.
Best place to get a coffee by the common! The coffee is delicious and the staff are so friendly and warm, it's a lovely little place to visit
C. D.
My favourite coffee shop in the area, they serve the best coffee I’ve tasted, have a lovely outside area and the staff are all very friendly
C. P.
Always good to us in here, food is excellent and so is the coffee. Cheers guys
A. K.
Lovely staff, great coffee and cute atmosphere :-)
N. I.
Great coffee and food. Gluten free cakes are delicious (the photo is of GF chocolate orange cake). Dairy free options for coffee are also available. It's normally quiet inside so you don't have to shout to have a conversation!
B. C.
This place is known for its high quality coffee, and it is undeniably fantastic. But that's not why I go there. I go there for their delicious sourdough toasties. They're easily the nicest toasties in Clapham, possibly even in London (I've certainly never had better).
The staff are always friendly, the interior is comfortable and the music is always good. I couldn't recommend Black Lab enough.
L. C.
Amazing coffee. Staff are friendly. My favourite place in Clapham
K.
Cool place with good food and amazing coffee! Friendly staff
I. a.
Nice place to get a coffee ☕👌😍
N. M.
Good cafe, about what you'd expect to pay price wise.
R. H.
Pleasant environment, excellent coffee served quickly by slightly disinterested staff.
S. T.
Wonderful coffee. Established for years. Food is excellent
A. W.
Great coffee and friendly environment. Very nice breakfast pastries
J. w.
The best option around this part of Clapham. Good coffee and tasty snacks with friendly staff.
A. Y.
Great atmosphere, awesome coffee. The bacon sandwich was super good.
N. P.
Great service, fresh food and a very good coffee for a change!
A. B.
My dog and I love this coffee shop! A must if your round the area. Such a great range of cakes and gluten free versions too, really good coffee, nice and strong hehehe and the staff are so friendly make you feel really welcomed
C. H.
Very decent coffee and some interesting food choices, although would probably check out nearby places for brunch as this seems like more of an in-and-out place. Very nice decor. Sadly service was a little slow but otherwise nothing really to complain about.
S. K.
If you live in London and like coffee, you've heard of Monmouth. I'm a huge fan, and it will always be my go-to for coffee beans, but The Black Lab pips them to the post for their excellent prepared coffees! They always have a selection on, and are knowledgeable about the flavour profiles of whatever they're currently serving, which changes reasonably often.
Beyond the coffee, it's a good space to work (apart from the occasionally dodgy WiFi), and the staff are really friendly. The food is good, and vegan options are available. There are a willpower-breaking number of tasty treats also available!
C. H.
This Coffee Shop overlooks Clapham Common, and the outdoor seating they have here makes sitting out in the Summertime with a coffee a great experience.
The coffee here is a very tasty and good quality. You can also purchase beans here if you make your own at home. They do coffee by size more than type here, so if you ask for a flat white, it will be the same as a cappuccino, just the size will be different. The staff are friendly and welcoming too.
There are plenty of seats here, and it has a very cosy feel to it making it a great spot for lunch or catching up with friends over a coffee. They also have a rest room here.
N. M.
Fantastic coffee, choice of health drinks and soft drinks and the pastries and sandwiches are delicious too. The only thing that tops it all is the lovely service.
O. S.
As an Aussie ex-barista in London, I thought it would be a massive struggle to find good coffee. The Black Lab is hands down the best coffee I've had in London. There is a choice of two different single origin beans which change regularly, making each visit a nice taste test. The coffees are always made superbly and the staff are always friendly. The sandwiches on offer are also extremely tasty. 5 stars, easy!
A. k.
Had the chicken salad, which was insanely good. Customer service was great aswell.
Staff is very welcoming and chatty.
Thanks Jess.
L. O.
Possibly some of the best coffee in London, offering single origin selections of beans that change day to day, alongside their regular blend. Lovely staff and owners who are really passionate about their coffee, and a nice little range of sandwiches and cakes - with vegan and gluten free options. Highly recommend.
B. R.
Best coffee in Clapham. I've been to so many highly regarded coffee shops in London and black lab is up there! I go almost every day for a 6oz. Great you can choose your espresso beans as I generally prefer fruitier sweeter espresso. To top it off, lovely staff who are clearly passionate about what they do
B. E.
Really great place, the best coffee in Clapham Common, they always make a fuss out of dogs and their new food menu is lovely (try the chicken burger!)
C. R.
Nice spot for a coffee and dog friendly
C. S.
i go out of my way to get coffee here every day (well most days)- the coffee changes regulary which is nice- and they take time to get to know their regulars! The coffee is amazing and it really is the best in the local area! one tip- do a loyalty card for customers :)!! im spending too much money here but worth it!
A. C.
Staff is extremely nice and they will help you choose! Place is rather busy so be prepared for a short wait. They have vegan options (oat milk etc.) and some vegan/vegetarian food. Definitely one of the nicest coffee shops in Clapham.
s. H.
One of my favourite places in Clapham! They put so much care into their coffee so you know its going to be the best cup you have all day. The food is also really yummy, bircher muesli is a must have. And to top it all off there is always a dog inside to get your daily puppy love!!! All round perfect stop in Clapham.
A. I.
This coffee is special. The black lab is the only coffee place you should try in the Clapham Common area. You select you coffee and size. This approach is far better for those who like their coffee a particular way. They also serve great filter (and don’t sell you an Americano when you ask for filter)! Sandwich’s are amazing and the bircher muesli for breakfast is unreal.
P. L.
Always a pleasure, coffee is consistently outstanding, and all creature's welcome. X
C.
Best coffee I've ever had. I miss this little gem from my commute since I relocated and think about that coffee every day.
The cakes and sandwiches are great too. Try the chocolate brownies they will change your life forever!
J. E.
Very good coffee but competition is strong in London and I wouldn't say it was exceptional, it may be a matter of taste but it wasn't as smooth as I'd expect for the price. Service was however extremely friendly so I couldn't fault it from that perspective.
G. M.
Finally a good coffee shop in south London! Black Lab offers good Australian-style coffee in Clapham Common, and it is great to have a great alternative to Starbucks.
The coffee beans are from Climpson & Sons roastery, a testament of good quality.
The food menu comprises of sandwiches and pastries, such as Portuguese custard tarts and brownies.
The only thing that could be improved is the decor and furniture, which are a bit old-style and make the place feel antiquate. I love independent coffee shops for the atmosphere and it's a shame that Black Lab doesn't do much on that front.
B. S.
Nice Mocha!
Being a fan of mocha only, thought I'd give this place a try. Been twice now. 1st time it was 8/10, 2nd was 9/10. Coffee was superb on last occasion
Staff are very friendly.
L. C.
Fantastic coffee and great selection of baking. Also really good service - the staff found a way to quickly accommodate our group of 4 people despite it being extremely busy.
R. C.
I'm a big coffee lover and this is one of the best coffee shops in whole London. It's a small place but the people really love it. Unique decor and the food is always fresh and hot.
D. C.
Love the coffee, possibly the best in London however, it takes time to get it. This place gets sooo busy you could easily get fed up standing in line. Havent tried the food so cant really comment. Brickwood cafe is only a few doors down so as far as service goes, the choice is a no brainer.
N. S.
A nice, comfy coffee shop with great snacks and even better coffee. I had a breakfast bowl with home made greek yogurt and home made muesli -- delish! The decor may be a bit out-dated, and tables are pretty packed in, but it's still one of my favourite places to meet a friend for a catch-up, or just rock it solo with my laptop on a workday.
N. J.
great place for coffee in Clapham. Good coffee, decent selection of sweet and savoury food and v friendly staff. Possibly the longest standing craft coffee shop in Clapham. Well worth a visit.
C. M.
Best coffee in London! I go here every day, either for a espresso or filter, and sometimes both. They also sell very reasonably priced coffee beans.
R. E.
In my opinion this is a great place, with amazing, friendly environment. These guys really care about the quality and how us costumers feel at the end of our experience there......
Many options available because this cafe uses multiple micro coffee roasters such as, Square Mile, Origin, Alchemy, Round Hill and Campbell & Syme. Had the El Salvador today (from Origin Coffee Roasters) espresso today! Fruity, sweet and refreshing! (Also slightly citrusy).
Followed by a Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Tart)... Can't go wrong! See you soon guys!
A. L.
Really good salad, lovely staff and dog friendly! I saw they also had great options for vegans, gluten free peoples etc but is not exclusively vegan in their menu so a good place to go if you had a group of friends who are mixed vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters :) will definitely be back.
R. R.
Somewhat expensive: £9.75 for a toasted sandwich, which was good, and a herbal tea, which tasted like Lemsip (less good). Staff were very helpful, and it felt like a work/laptop-friendly place where you could sit comfortably for a few hours.
l. g.
One of the best coffees in london.
Great friendly service.
Really passionate staff who are happy and keen to explain the changing range of coffee that's on offer.
It's a must visit!!
K. G.
Nice little indie coffee shop serving veggie-friendly soups and sandwiches. They allow dogs so I met a lovely pug when I visited. Staff are chilled and won't rush you. Only downside was the slightly drab decor and TV on the wall playing music videos.
J. G.
Literally the best coffee in South London. So friendly, dog friendly too! Love this place ❤ 💕 😍
G. R.
Great coffee, especially for me the filter coffee. The sandwiches and cakes are tasty and fresh. This is only a small cafe and can get very busy at peak times.
V. P.
They make one of the best coffee in London! You must also try their cesar toast... it’s the best thing I’ve ever eaten
E. A.
Easily the best coffee shop in Clapham. I'd heard good things but it wasn't until I was served my cappuccino that I realized how awesome the coffee was going to be. Even from the look of the milk, it was perfect. Proper thick and smooth foam, perfectly steamed, a real treat. I also had a moz, tom and basil ciabatta and it was great, there was even a splash of balsamic. The staff were really friendly and didn't rush us in the decision making process. You can have whatever you want from the boards, freshly made and in various guises; the same ingredients can be whipped up into various sandwich styles of you can go breadless with a generously proportioned salad. The music was cool, the minimalist film posters on the walls were a nice touch and I like the cosy feel from small tables or high-stools and benches. A top new place to get caffeinated. #Irishtini
C. T.
This might be my new favourite place, despite not spending too much time actually in Clapham. I've been meaning to visit it for ages - it's not exactly hidden and I was drawn in by the neat font on the door. The weekend drizzle-turning-downpour was the perfect excuse. So we drank coffee and hot chocolate whilst pretending the rain might end.
I kept noticing little bits that I liked more. But it was really the old fashioned lights, the lovely way it was all put together, and something rather sexy going on with the back boards.
I'm half hoping it's raining on the way to the tube next time, too.
A. G.
Lovely cafe, didn't feel rushed, it said 30 minutes max on the outside tables, we were there for 3 hours! Great cheap coffees too 👍😊
S. T.
For your coffee lovers this is a destination to go to if you're in this part of London, it is a very small place that looks like a hipster den. On a Saturday it is like date central so good luck getting a table.
J. H.
Best coffee in Clapham and one of the best in London. Absolutely incredible.
D. P.
Probably the best coffee and brunch place near Clapham Common, the place isn't massive, so you may have to sit outside but on a Summer's day it was very nice.
They have freshly made food, cake and yoghurt and such, so if you are looking for a lazy breakfast or a coffee, I'd go here first.
The only thing is, you are in Clapham and the prices were quite high, but you are paying for the view and the location too.
S. M.
A nice spot for a genuine cup of Joe just off the main drag in Clapham. Drinks are on the pricier side, but the staff are friendly and it's pretty comfortable when not packed our with people.
d.
Great coffee and the staff are great at guiding you to the size of coffee and particular beans which you would not enjoy. It helps you to decide the coffee that is customised to your particular tastes
K. S.
Delicious baked goods. Super friendly staff. Good coffee - only let down was the strangely thick, slightly burned soy milk on my flat white (30p extra for soy).
E. B.
Really lovely coffee here, and the staff are very friendly. Unfortunately when I was there the power went out on the whole street so I couldn't get a second cup of coffee and had to go across the road to Starbucks.
G. w.
One of the best flat whites I've had in London, highly recommended! Even the banana bread toast was surprisingly tasty and moist.
S. C.
Good service, excellent coffee, delicious cakes. What more could you want? I recommend the peanut butter blondie and the Nutella brownie.
E. J.
Don't let the out-dated, drab decor put you off popping into this place. I'll admit, I was a little dubious at first but the coffee and snacks were worth the risk. The staff are friendly and don't get all huffy if you happen to visit feeling indecisive, plus there's a good range of food and snacks to keep meat eaters and veggies alike happy.
M. R.
Absolutely amazing coffee! Best in Clapham. Food is nothing to write home about but that’s not what they are here for!
L. T.
One of the best coffee places in London, no exaggeration here. And the crew is very nice too! Keep it up :)
C. L.
Quality coffee and great service. If you need a place to work from for a couple of hours they have tables with power points inside 👌
I. S.

M. G.
Great coffee with a choice of beans, friendly staff, comfortable seating inside and out, free WiFi and plenty of power sockets
A. M.
Tasty coffee, choice of beans, knowledgeable without being coffee snobs. Their bakery produce looked perhaps bought-in, but what I had was tasty.
R. H.
A friendly coffee shop with a fast-changing choice of pour-over coffees. Food is reasonably priced and tasty, including both cakes and sandwiches.
M. C.
Terrific quality and value. A consistent approach to warm customer care, beautiful artisan coffee, tasteful eating.
L. C.
Great coffee selection, both in provenance and type. In the summer heat, definitely inquire about the cold brew.
S. O.
