Reviews of The Slade Cafe

Undeniably overpriced but absolutely delicious. Always. Case in point - they sell the best sausage rolls I've ever had. But they're £4 each - which is kind of insane. But they're so damn tasty. Had their special today - a burger - which was also extremely delicious but cost £9. Guess you get what you pay for here....

Great food. As in really really great. The service is done with a smile although table cleaning sometimes can unintentionally be a little bit hit and miss holding me back from that 5* review

A great new cafe perfectly situated between winns Common and Plumstead Common. Perfect for a relaxing coffee/tea or snack served by friendly staff. The Latte I ordered was very tasty indeed. The menu is fairly limited in terms of food but you can get egg on toast, croissants and cakes, and the basics, it's still very new so this may change. It's construction is made primarily of glass so feels spacious and fresh. There is a children's playground, nursery, primary school and local convenience stores in the immediate surroundings. seems to be frequented by friendly customers mainly families with babies or young children. You can pay by cash and they also take card/contactless payment. There are steps and a ramp to the entrance so it's accessible to wheelchair users and buggies. In my opinion this coffee shop is in a perfect location and was well needed in this area.

Disappointed that there isn't a public toilet to use, I thought cafes should have one available when serving food. Also surprised at how often they're not open, been a few times when I thought I'd go and they're closed. Other than that, generally friendly staff, and drinks were nice

First time lunching in The Slade community cafe. It was lovely to see so many people eating there, with lots of kids running around among the trees. Slade serves seriously great food; quality ingredients, good recipes and excellent cooking. Cannelloni with beef ragu, bechamel sauce and salad with cracking vinaigrette. Tuscan ribollita with pork steak. First rate coffee too. We will be back.

Very nice local place, good coffee, nice pastries (especially the cinnamon buns when they have them) and very nice bread! A bit slow at times but all the staff are lovely
Z. M.
Great atmosphere and high quality food & drink for good prices. Excellent independent cafe to visit! The quality of coffee is better than chain coffee shops and at a lower price. Kid-friendly & dog friendly. There are even toys/books for young children and magazines for adults.

Lovely friendly Cafe, great to go after shopping, before I head home and it saves time and no washing up

Superb little gem 😊 Chilled environment, welcoming to all! Lovely food, great coffee & delicious cake in particular try the "Quince & Almond cake".....it's the best I've had! 😁 ⚄🌟

We love this cafe and it has become one of our favourite places to walk to for coffee and occasionally cake.
The coffee is good and there is a decent selection of other food items. We have been going during lockdown and the take out service is very good.
We are looking forward to visiting and sitting in when Coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

I love this cafe! I fell in love with their coffee and focaccia from the first visit a couple of weeks ago. Take the opportunity to grab a coffee and go for a nice autumn walk! I haven't had the pleasure of eating-in due to lock-down, but the staff were friendly from the short interaction that I had with them.

This is our favourite cafe by far. The best coffees around and delicious healthy food - great vegan options too. The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming. We work on our laptops often and other times just enjoy the relaxed environment. The layout is great and seating is comfortable and there is also an outdoor space. Highly recommend.

Absolutely delicious chicken tikka masala and homemade bread for lunch. A local gem!
F. B.
Lovely cafe, nice mellow coffee roast and a good selection of veggie and vegan baked goods.
During Covid 19 they only have the outside terrace open and take away options. Order in the front and collect the order from the side door.
The toilets are not currently in use (Sept 2020).
A. B.
A great new space, has loads of potential- affordable and delicious menu, menu still abit limited but they are brand new and that is to be expected. Wishing them the best of luck!
J. M.
Passionate staff in a lovely wee local cafe. We'll come here more often now.

It's strange to think that this place was once public toilets but it has been refurbished nicely and the extension gives lots of light.
There isn't a great variety of food on the menu or baked pastries/cakes but it does have a good selection of hot beverages. The food is reasonably priced. The staff are very helpful, I ordered an ice coffee but not a strong one and they were happy to accommodate. My little one was happy with her cheese toastie and hot chocolate. I enjoyed my Welsh rarebit.
I noticed there were toys and books in the corner which I thought was a nice touch. It shows they are family friendly and perfect for families who have been busy at playground across the road.

A lovely cafe in a bright space with an outside terrace for sunny days. It is an excellent conversion of a building that I believe used to house public toilets that has now been transformed into a much needed community hub. They have a small menu but use high quality ingredients and cook everything with care and attention. Finally and most importantly, they have first rate coffee. Highly recommend.
H. K.
Coffees are very good, cakes decent as well. Great to have an independent cafe around here. Only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars are the chocolate brownies. Was basically chocolate cream but not a real brownie
S. K.
Gorgeous food and coffee. Really love it here- please start opening on Tuesdays too hehe<3! Thank you for all the delicious grub, it really brightens up the covid blues<3

Plumstead has two excellent coffee shops, one the Plumstead Pantry, and the other , The Slade cafe. Said to be built where the old public conveniences were, ( councils dont provide them much these days) this is glassy structure just off Plumstead Common road.Delicious pastries, coffee, and other pastries. Will need to go to Plumstead more often!
M. F.
The space is lovely, a beautiful building conversion from what it used to be. A lovely terrace specially for bright and sunny days.
Staff is friendly but a bit slow, I guess they're trying their best to provide a good customer service and some attention to detail but they could do it faster specially if it's out of peak times and they're 3 staff members.
Coffee is high quality, very tasty but a bit over priced considering the size of the mugs.
The menu is very small doesn't give much option. There's no fries available. On the other hand they have soup of the day which isn't common around the area but the menu is overpriced, i.e. soup is £5.50!
Paid £8.60 for a kids sandwich + 1 glass of juice = kids menu, 1 chocolate brownie (very tasty, fresh and soft) and 1 cappuccino.
If you don't drink hot drinks there's not much more options. A very small selection of pastries. Was thinking to go on the weekend for breakfast but there's not enough breakfast selection (no sausages or fries) and it's overpriced.
If you want to go with kids and considering the playground is just opposite kids menu is very limited: cheese sandwiche, toast with jam and some dips, certainly not my son's choice.
If you're an adult looking for some quiet spot to have a grown up conversation or work on your laptop with a good hot drink this can be a good place to go plus there's not much more to go around so they're lucky not enough competition.
Overall won't be going as often as I thought I could go for the reasons mentioned above.

Fantastic coffee and a lovely little green spot to sit outside and enjoy it. This is a great place and I'll stop by, again.
C. F.
Awesome dog friendly café in an innovative building who made me and my French Bulldog Dennis feel so welcome. Great friendly staff, perfectly textured flat white using Redemption beans (another big plus from this Aussie-trained barista) and a great brunch. Nice simple menu but all at a great price and I'm looking forward to working my way through it. I've visited twice and both times it's been buzzing with customers from all walks (and stages) of life but a great vibe and energy from the staff. Fantastic to have this café in the area.
L. C.
We've deserted the Pantry accross the common after few awkward & overpriced visits, the Slade on the contrary, has pleasant staff, reasonable price and a clean sitting area. Fuss free, understated and humble, they will go the extra mile to make you feel as comfortable as they can. We simply love our occasional visit. Keep on the excellent work, well done.
C. B.
Lovely atmosphere, well put together and friendly service. £4 for a bacon sandwich was a little expensive but it was delicious and very filling. The only thing letting it down was the chocolate brownies, it was like dry chocolate cake and I couldn't eat more than a few mouthfuls.
M. M.
Amazing, fresh sourdough, and the cakes are lovley too. Service is always warm, makes you feel at home.
H. T.
Delicious and exciting vegetarian sandwiches. Great coffee and really handy for flour and other basic supplies.
L. W.
Wonderful coffee, incredible baking and a brilliant team who have done so much to safely support the community over the past few months. It's a gem...
R. B.
Lovely little place. Great options for breakfast and lunch and the staff are very friendly. I go there every weekend with my daughter.
G. B.
I live near the Slade. I have watched the old toilets slowly being transformed into a café. I have doubted who would visit it, stuck out from an isolated street of shops. Now I see it, alive and thriving, moulding that lonely street into a village. It has become the beating heart of the Slade. Btw, the coffee and food are pretty good too, cooked, presented and served in a friendly, village way, at village prices. Keep it to yourself, but they also sell yirgacheffe coffee beans.
M. L.
We had a lovely tasty Sunday breakfast. Helpful staff, value for money in a pleasant setting. Well done to the slade cafe staff.
M. 2.
Friendly staff and lovely food. I can recommend the vegetarian pattie and the lemon drizzle cake
J. K.
Lovely food, well made. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The cafe is really light and airy.
L. j.
Yes it's a little over priced for food and I imagine if you were intolerant of children you might struggle sometimes (though truely you might look at the playground, primary school and All The Houses first... It's a bit like complaining that there are fish in the sea)
However food is nice, coffee fab, staff lovely (who've taken time to learn the names of me and my 2 children) the building itself is very very well done.
D. H.
A great cafe. My only wish is that they served sausages. Staff are friendly and food always cooked to a good standard
J. L.
Great cafe and their coffee is good too (I’m fussy about my coffee).
Only problem was that they don’t just offer a plain full English which annoys me slightly
J. M.
I'm biased becaue this is one of only 2 good cafes in the area but this is a great place for coffee. Food menu is ever improving. Give it a go.
B. 2.
Lovely, sun bathed conversion of former Victorian building, serving Redemption coffee, all day brunch, build-your-own brunch, parties and in-house made cakes and preserves. A real gem in SE18
N. S.
Very good social distancing in place, quick service and friendly staff. Highly recommend this cafe.
