A.
Very good services. I got the Egg Florentine and a cappuccino. Both were good. Recommended if you're passing by.
D. B.
Delicious breakfast. Cheerful, friendly staff and the Sweet chai latte is divine! A great place to eat.
I. A.
The perfect place for the perfect cup of coffee in the heart of Newcastle! (They have food too!)
R. M.
Today we went to have breakfast at Blakes, the food was really good and the service was great!!!. We loved the deco of the restaurant. We will definitely go back.
L. M.
Great breakfast dining. The full English looked amazing but I had the American pancakes with maple syrup. Unfortunately the syrup was already on the plate and drowned the bacon and pancakes. Would have preferred to have it separate. But the place was clean and comfortable, staff friendly and not much of a wait for food. Been before and would go again

Top class. Really good food. Great coffee. Friendly staff and a warm welcome.
D. M.
Absolutely delicious!
Lovely friendly atmosphere, staff very friendly and helpful.
Highly recommend the eggs benedict, poached eggs cooked to perfection!
Pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup were very nice as well.

I’m relatively new to Newcastle and this was the first cafe we popped into here. We grabbed breakfast (absolutely loving a breakfast cafe is open most of the day). The food is 10/10 and definitely worth what you’re paying. The staff are super friendly! Overall, it was a great safe place with great service and impeccable food!
G. G.
Canny place for breakfast situated on the most picturesque street in Newcastle, Grey Street.
L. R.
Foods ok, new decor is nice. Only haven't given it 5 stars as when all the cakes were made in house food was much better
D. R.
Chose to have brunch here on my niece’s recommendation and we were not disappointed. Beautiful sunny day so we were able to sit out in the sun watching the world pass by while enjoying a stottie and a coffee. Very busy with tradesmen, tourists, businesspeople and all so a short wait for food but worth it. Always a good sign when there’s a queue.
S.
Busy. Nice place. Orders cake and coffee. Was given the smallest peice on offer Shame as I look like I love cake. Bit of a poor customer care decision. Anyway I got over it, just. Coffee is fine. Service polite.

Normally walk down the Quayside for breakfast when I'm visiting home but this time we tried Blakes. Lovely place, lovely, tasty food. I had the Big Breakfast Stottie and my bf had the Eggs Benedict. No complaints. Great service, great food, great place.
R. C.
Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning, place was packed which was a good sign. Managed to squeeze in for a table of two. Breakfast was excellent, Full Monty highly recommended as was the Breakfast Stottie. Staff very helpful and attentitive despite it being a very busy service. Will definitely return next time in Newcastle.

Canny place for breakfast situated on the most picturesque street in Newcastle, Grey Street.

Normally love the look and feel of this place but it is looking a little tired at the min. Just had very good coffee and lemon drizzle cake . Always full but managed to get a booth rather than big 'everyone together ' table in the middle.
J. C.
Just been to Blake’s for breakfast I had the full monty English breakfast with toast and pot of tea my wife had scrambled eggs with toast and a large coffee . Both were excellent and well cooked for just under £20.00 Wish I had found this place sooner will certainly be back next time we’re in Newcastle once again first class.
J. B.
Superb food and excellent service. Try the salsa eggs! Delicious! Great atmosphere and decor too.

Foods ok, new decor is nice. Only haven't given it 5 stars as when all the cakes were made in house food was much better
G. S.
Excellent food and service passed this place loads of times over the years but popped in last Sunday for brunch , will definitely go back..
G. W.
Wonderful service, delicious food and a great atmosphere. Just popped in for a hot drink with a friend and would highly recommend this place for a bite, a drink or something for lunch, breakfast or dinner.
I. (.
Decent food, had the Eggs Benedict which used Ham instead of bacon which was a nice change (less fat). Service works like this, you ask for a menu, pick a table, order at the cashier once you know what you want. They are normally very busy during the day so I recommend for fast service to order at the cashier when you arrive. Saves alot of time (had a 30 min wait on food when I went for sound 10:30am).
A. H.
We came for the recommended pancakes. Which were terrible; over microwaved and hard. The table was sticky. Good service and a decent cup of coffee though.
C. P.
A nice place to sit and watch the world go by along Grey Street . We had tea and cakes which was as expected- with lovely friendly service . The inside is a tad outdated and the toilets needed a bit of a check - paper all on the floor . I nice place to stop and refresh !
A. 6.
Lovely food and atmosphere.
Can be rather noisy at busier times.
Opens early on a morning which is good to get parked and visit blakes for breakfast.
Toilets downstairs. No good if disabled or poor mobility.
J. G.
This place used to be amazing but over the past little while....it's gone downhill. I thought for a while that maybe I had just caught them on an off day but it doesn't seem to be the case. The chef can't seem to make anything to order.
I have asked for well done bacon, well done sausages, crispy bacon but he doesn't seem to know what this means, he's even been over to our table to ask if we wanted the egg well done. So he knows what the order is but can't seem to get it right. The coffee was also on slightly warm when ordered.
A. D.
Breakfast specialists!
Everything on their menu does what it sets out to do, whether it’s light and peppy or an indulgent treat, it’s all spot on
With a lovely atmosphere and super friendly staff, it ticks all the boxes
N. T.
Lovely breakfast and latte, rapid service and amazing qualify. Definitely recommend.
E. C.
Most places seem closed due COVID, this gem is still currently open serving great breakfasts for very reasonable prices. Friendly and welcoming staff and a great soundtrack in the background.
R. R.
We went here for lunch and all I can say is the food is amazing. Myself and my fiancè had a chicken ceasar sandwich and his mother had a breakfast bap. The portion sizes were large and they came with crisps. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and the staff are friendly. This is our 3rd visit and we try to come back for lunch here whenever we are in Newcastle.
100% recommend
P. S.
Had breakfast as was in Motel One just round the corner. Food was nice and the coffee was just as good!
B. t. B.
Fine food great staff a place to go back to
A. B.
had a mint mocha and salted caramel white hot chocolate which were both wonderful and really delicious. i remember the atmosphere being very nice with music and homely decor, but lately feels quite busy with no music. love this place but i miss the jazz!
G. C.
Good coffees and cakes served here.
A long standing institution for nice breakfasts.
E. S.
Nice selection of food, friendly staff, not bad value
A. C.
Great service great food highly recommended
H. S.
Lovely place, nice food, friendly staff, lovely homely interior, well worth a visit

I go for the take-out sandwiches which I always enjoy (they have a lovely selection). They do sell out so get there early if you're contemplating a sandwich. I've sat in before but it's a little too busy for me. The table arrangement gives me really bad anxiety with the people traffic and hot food going back and forth behind me (it isn't necessarily something that would bother anyone else). There are a number of tables set back from the 'hustle and bustle' of the main seating area - and when available - it's nice to sit inside and eat. I would definitely recommend this location for take-out sandwiches and jacket potatoes etc (or sitting in if preferred).
Overall, the food is nice. They have a varied menu with daily specials and all of the staff are friendly and accommodating.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area ☺️
J. B.
Excellent food on a lovely, lively setting. Friendly staff.
R. A.
Great coffee, I didn't have anything to eat, but the three people I was with did, and they all enjoyed the food. The food certainly looked delicious especially the eggs Benedict and it was very quick service by friendly staff.
A. S.
Amazing service, fantastic coffee and a lovely breakfast
B. B.
A little bit of a squash considering we're not out the other side of COVID quite yet. Can't be helped though. It's a small place! Went for breakfast. It was tasty. They don't do hash browns. Major let down. Everything was tasty though!
S. K.
Very busy which is always a good sign, friendly and when in Newcastle always worth a visit. Highly recommended.
A. M.
Excellent customer service and the food is 1sr class. Definitely recommend 🍴
A. B.
Great food with fantastic service always a pleasure never disappointed.
b. p.
After taking a easy stroll down past the theatre I walked into the pleasant meet 'n' greet at Blakes. My latte was large served hot and with very full flavourd coffee! Unlike the insipid water served up as coffee by the multi nationals. I only wish I had ordered the eggsbenny served to the table next to me...it looked delicious!
K. M.
Food was really nice but we waited for about 30 mins to get our breakfast. Our friends who ordered straight after us waited for longer. Would come back though think it was just a very busy day!
T. E.
Good coffees and perfect porridge. Eggs Benedict a bit bland and the American pancakes were hardly that, not fluffy and ham instead of bacon, but still pretty nice.
G. U.
Tight seating if you are plus size. Great menu. Great breakfast. I should have taken a muffin too!
D. P.
Good selection for breakfast and the service quick considering the place was full
J. C.
A gem in the crown of eateries in Newcastle city centre. Excellent service and delicious food, at a great price for a city centre location. Brunch and coffee really hit the spot.
J. G.
Good breakfast, I can recommend the eggs Benedict with a side order of black pudding. Good to cure a hangover😕
R. m.
Love it everything's freshly made...and great friendly staffs will be back
W. M.
A comfortable refuge from the rain, lovely coffee and a snack. Nice staff. Will go again.
D. H.
Good breakfasts all very tasty staff spot on told would have to wait 45 minutes however served in 15 minutes nice surprise place full covid secure felt safe able to talk good atmosphere was the yesterday also must be doing it right
P. S.
Possibly the best place for breakfast in town 👍
A. H.
Nice staff, lovely food and even better coffee.
M. F.
Nice meal, good service,nice ambience.
S.
Always delicious food, great service, would recommend
M. S.
Very welcoming. Staff very friendly and food / drinks were spot on. Wonderful atmosphere
B. D.
Very nice atmosphere and aesthetic to the place, the coffees are excellent and the selection of cold dishes for lunch are good also.
M. S.
Great place for good food. Have had many breakfasts here, e.g. - full English, Eggs Benedict, Porridge. Everything is freshly cooked and comes piping hot. Sandwiches are freshly made each day and the selection is extensive. Service is fast and efficient. Would recommend it to anyone.
J. A.
Been here lots of times and intend to keep coming back.
Wonderful selection of breakfast dishes served all day, nice quality ingredients and consistent preperation. Lovely venue with a good atmosphere.
Would bump up to five but there are a few small issues such as the espresso machine being broken (extracting way too fast resulting in espresso coming out very weak and closer to filter coffee than espresso), sometimes the staff are a bit abrupt and unfriendly but not so much that it stops me coming back. The last time I was in I could taste the greasy pan that the eggs were cooked on but only on the eggs, again not enough to ruin my meal but could benefit from cleaning the pan regularly, I understand this would be a challenge given how busy the cafe usually is.
Overall lovely cafe with a nice tavern sort of feel to it and tasty food.
P. C.
Good place to relax for awhile when city sightseeing. Good coffee and food selection. Plenty of space and accommodating staff
J. R.
Great coffee from Columbia lovely cake 🍰and 2 lovely cold drinks and service was great with a smile 😃
V. R.
Had a lovely breakfast here sat outside as it was a nice day. The ladies who were serving the tables were very friendly
A. E.
The best.. My 6year old princess loves sitting in the window and watching the world go by with a ham and cheese toasted sandwich and a flake milkshake.
J. B.
Excellent food: it's nice to have chilli in a jacket potato that has a proper kick to it!
C. S. H.
Not open on jubilee weekend until 6 June.
J. R.
An unusual place for me. I fluctuate from thinking it's good, to it's not really good at all, having sampled their wares for several years now. Sitting outside (during the limited summer months we have) is pretty cool for watching the Grey St. folk go about their business. The menu on paper is fine but the consistency of quality isn't. No problems with service, and I've never seen it unpopulated either, but location wise it's on to a winner regardless. I'll go back for sure, but not in a hurry.
P. K.
Great atmosphere and music.
Booth - really comfy.
Ingredients all quality and smiley staff ❤️👍
s. p.
Nice coffee shop opposite the theatre royal. Spacious. Friendly staff. They used to have all sorts of fancy cakes none to be seen yesterday though. Also wanted a scone with my coffee but none left. Get in earlier I guess. Popular with students.
J. B.
What a gem, my daughter and I went for Brunch this morning, super food, friendly efficient staff and cracking atmosphere- Highly recommended, stuff the corporate places ! Choose here !
T. E.
Lovely sandwich join! Great to come here again after not being in the city for over ten years!
G. B.
People were very pleasant. Breakfast was average, in terms of taste and value. Nice coffee. The tea had real tea leaves, which is unusual.
The mens toilet was inadequate, with one cubicle and one urinal. At least there are interesting things on the walls to read while you wait.
Best avoided if you have mobility issues as those toilets are down 17 steep steps.
M. E.
Nice breakfast place, very friendly and attentive staff. Nice coffee, well presented. Lovely hot food, had breakfast which was freshly made, hot and very tasty. Nice place with a cool vibe, clean & tidy with nice level background music and newspapers, magazines etc. Recommended.
t. t.
Only popped in for a coffee so can't comment on the food other than that what we saw looked fabulous. The coffee was excellent quality and well prepared, in a friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended.
R. G.
Absolutely fabulous service and extraordinary food , try the flapjack you won't be disappointed
A. C.
Very nice cafe. We went for breakfast. Great quality food, reasonable price and wide selection. Vegi breakfast was tasty and the sausage was the best I think I have. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
R. B.
Nice place to eat
C. W.
We stopped for soup and tea after walking around Newcastle for the day, nice staff and a plenty of seating.
The soup and roll was nice nothing to call home about but just what we needed.
The pots of tea where lovely, hot and fresh.
Overall a nice experience.
G. H.
Lovely outdoor seating area and friendly staff. Pastries were a bit disappointing but coffees were amazing!
S. C.
Rustic with a good selection of food. Remember to check out the posters on the walls because not all their menu is on the boards. Toilets are down some very steep narrow stairs so those of you with mobility considerations might need to look elsewhere. They sometimes have a Jaffa Cake inspired cake which is amazing...
P. P.
Great place serving a good choice of food, both hot and cold. Very friendly staff offering a warm welcome. It gets very busy at lunchtime which is a testament to how popular it is.
C. J.
Excellent place for a Sunday brunch. It was busy but the staff were very efficient. Delicious fry up and pancakes. Set us up for the day! Highly recommended.
M. L.
Very impressive and memorable restaurant.
English breakfast was excellent, well worth the price. The items on display such as paninis and stotties looked perfect. Very busy place and understandable why
C.
A gem of a place especially for breakfast, the food is excellent, the atmosphere is very friendly. It can get busy as you would expect but it's worth the wait. Give it a try I don't think you will be disappointed.
A. R.
Delicious sandwiches and friendly helpful staff... one of my favourite lunch time places on Newcastle.
Highly recommended 👌🏻👍🏻
J. W.
Great flat white. Nice place, lovely atmosphere.
L. W.
Amazing food and staff so friendly and helpful. Fav place !
p. a.
Me and my daughter had a fab breakfast from great staff who make you feel very welcome
R. Y.
Lovely place and great service! 💖
N. S.
Staff great and egg and bacon stottie bloody lovely 😋😋😋😋😋😋
C. G.
A great little coffee shop/cafe which does delicious food at very reasonable prices. They're situated in an interesting old building so the layout is quirky and means that there's a cosy feel to it, with decor influenced by 40's jazz and blues memorabilia and certainly New Orleans based. I've been going here on and off since 1998 so a customer for nearly 20 years!
M. W.
Blake's is a very cool place to go to for a change from the ordinary. The bare wooden floorboards are as old as the hills and fit in with the rustic character of the place. It looks a bit rough and makeshift, but thats why i like it. It's not one of those corporate cafes. It has a unique personality with a great atmosphere and they play old school music, like Dylan and some blues. It attracts a wide eclectic range of interesting customers, and as a people watcher, I'm fascinated by the variety of types. The coffees quite good and the sandwiches, stotties, cakes and scones are fairly good. It has a reputation for serving a very good breakfast, some say the best in Newcastle. It's set in a classy up market street and this keeps it free from the riff raff. Definitely one of the best cafes in town.
a coffee and a snack.
A. W.
Come here many times, great sandwich selection toasted or not aswell as other options for food. A well known locally famous breakfast spot with excellent tea and coffee. Staff are brilliant, down to earth, hard working, and always helpful. I must go to place for a brekkie, brunch, lunch or just a coffee break!
T. B.
I went there twice for coffee. The coffee was excellent with real taste. The staff and atmosphere were so good. Highly recommend for coffee. However, my friend chose 'plain milk shake' and she was a bit disappointed.
S. Z.
Cheap, tasty and unpretentious food and sevice. Blake's is not a hipster café, so its customers are refreshingly diverse. The space is beautiful and the WiFi works well. I've spent hours working on my laptop next to the window with a nice breeze coming in :) definitely a Newcastle favourite!
G. T.
This is a great place for a Saturday morning breakfast with a good atmosphere, fast and efficient service and a good selection of well made food. It can get extremely packed however and they have ensured to fit in as many tables as humanely possible which is its only letdown.
C. H.
Best place on the planet. Wish the blues music would be as prominent as it used to be but apart from Blakes is single handedly the best coffee shop/breakfast venue in Newcastle!
A. R.
Always guaranteed good service and I love what they've done to the place during the last closure period. Lovely setting.
M. J.
Quaint converted farm hostel a comfortable room with friendly, eager to please hostess. Only concern was little too soft mattress....my son's mattress was very satisfying.
S. S.
Came for full English. A higher than average price, and the dish was too salty for my taste. Also, for some reason they keep an empty bottle of gin on every table, will not deduct points for it, maybe it is a thing.
T. M.
My favourite café in town. May be a little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Lovely atmosphere with an old school style. Music selection is also deserving of some praise.
W. S.
Had a lovely breakfast, staff very helpful and friendly
N. J.
Nice cozy little place in the centre of town. If you're in the area and fancy a cooked breakfast then it's the place to go. Can get really busy at the weekend. Staff are friendly. Limited on-street parking available close by.
B. a. B. B.
Delicious food. I had a HUGE toasted goats cheese & meditarranean roll. You can tell this place is a local institution, it's been there for years & it's independently run hurrah!
L. K.
Very good cappuccino, great service, nice place
J. R.
Nice to eat on the pavement and watch the world go by. Good service and two lovely salads.
G.
Had a really nice breakfast here with the family.
From the staff to the food service was great.
The only problem was the place was freezing cold.
B. T.
Amazing scrambled eggs loads of salmon nice hollandaise sauce.only one little issue said English muffin and got whole meal bagel.not complaining as very good.but just not what it said on the board.full English looked and apparently tasted good also.onlyone little compliant.theu need to do a little high dusting lamp hanging above our table had good layer of dust on .not good to know when eating food that tastes so good.
e. t.
Blake very reputative cafe.Very nice café in Newcastle, when I was a student used to go there for breakfast and coffee. Will be little bit packed for weekend. They are doing good.
L. H.
Take away coffees were nice, staff friendly and prompt
J. J.
Very nice it's been renovated since we last visited service was good
s. k.
Found the food menu to be a bit boring and repetitive but the coffee was pretty spot on 👌🏽
G. A.
The best pancakes I’ve ever had and such friendly service, thank you!
P. H.
A great experience, from the papers on the tables to the background music. There's also a good selection of drinks and snacks at value for money prices.
Unfortunately (as is the majority of cases in England) Blake's haven't adopted the continental culture of table service. This however, or the trip to the basement toilets won't stop me going there.
S. P.
Good food & drinks.
S. H.
Have loved this place for over 20 years it hasnt lost an ounce of charm in all this time. Soya latte, jacket potato and salad meant we could eat vegan there.
M. M.
Good service! Lovely toastie and muffin.
S. E.
Great vibe, lovely coffee and friendly staff. Plenty of options for vegetarians! I'd definitely recommend the 'Greek Melody' sandwich!
D. S.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and great food!
Also they didn't charge for jam which made me very happy, greatvplace to start the day!
C. S.
Good location and lovely decor, with large bright windows facing the street. They make great sandwiches, but you can get better coffee elsewhere.
L. T.

j. d.
Decent breakfast, staff were friendly
L. H.
Ditch the corporate and go Independant. This cafe is great. We had breakfast which was superb. The scones and sandwiches looked awesome too
B. M. A.
Great food and service, would recommend.
K. M.
Decent breakfast though nothing special. I find it a bit annoying that there's no menus and you spend a fair amount of time queuing
E. A.
Nice but overpriced. Would visit again but there are other options I would choose as the service was slow sadly. Wasn't particularly busy at the time either.
G. W.
