Reviews of Cartwheel Cafe and Roastery

Great coffee and amazing food. I ordered a flat white and Full English Breakfast. The coffee tasted fantastic. The food was cooked to perfection, my bacon was sweet and smoky and sausage flavoursome. This is not a breakfast from tins, it's crafted and definitely worth trying! Also, the portion is rather huge!
R. A.
First time visiting and did not disappoint. A hidden gem!!
We came for coffee and breakfast , great service and a wide range of different coffee flavours! Will definitely be ordering some online. If I am ever back in Nottingham I will be visiting again. Thank you!
D. T.
A cosy and modish cafe with a variety of brew options. I have been there a few times for both coffee and brunch. And my experiences had been very satisfying and unforgettable. The staff are very polite and talented. It’s truly worth a visit.
J. O.
My husband and I stopped for breakfast while shopping nearby. The Eggs Benedict was quite good and my husband raved about the Bacon Focaccia with egg. The highlight for me was the delicious (and artful) mocha. Nice atmosphere, good location and friendly service. 10/10
L. V.
Food was absolutely beautiful and so was the coffee. The waiting was so long though... I would be back another time and hopefully will make my review 5star. Generally, a great place to go.
S. B.
I went for coffee and ended up with pancakes as well. If you are in the area, don't miss you.
Beautiful atmosphere and food and drink matches it!
j. s.
One of my favourite coffee shops. I have had amazing experiences there 💙 and the staff are amazing and so talented.
L. T. T.
the avocado toast is a must try!! quite enjoyed the iced coffee too - tasted vv refreshing - but it was slightly too mild for me.
K. H.
Me and my mum popped by here while we were shopping as we were recommended by a lady in a nearby shop. We were thoroughly pleased. Very reasonable prices! Only £5.50 for 2 drinks. A decaff coffee and a hot chocolate which were very very tasty! BARGAIN! the food also looked lovely so we will definitely be back to sample the brekky menu! The staff were very friendly too ♡
C. F.
Lovely little cafe, perfect for a mid-shopping trip break. Highly recommend the mushrooms & eggs on toast, with freshly squeezed OJ and a coffee. The staff were very friendly and attentive too - will definitely return!
G. W. D.
Nice little coffee shop in the city centre.
Lovely friendly staff and great coffee.
S. K.
Nice spot in town, a bit hipster. I always come for the coffee as its well known, but leave thinking it wasn't that special 🤷♂️. The food is nice, and a small menu (which is good) that has breakfast and brunch options for veggies too.
B. E.
Really nice food, good atmosphere just thought it was a little pricey, not sure how soon I will be going back
K. M.
The updated food menu is excellent but the pickled raisins in the Chia pudding pot is a TERRIBLE idea. Who actually thought it would be a good idea to put something oniony tasting in a sweet treat??? It needs to go. Apart from that, great atmosphere and very welcoming workers.
A. M.
We had breakfast on a Sunday. The cafe got really busy, but I can understand why. The coffee was was excellent. We had the smashed avacado/eggs on sourdough and pancakes. Both excellent. Can't wait to go back!
M.
Great place for both brunch or coffee! 😋
S. D.
Very good coffee roasters. And credit to them to listening to my feedback about serving pour overs with a warm cup, to preserve the heat of the drink. My review is upgraded to 5-stars.
J. M.
This is a place you must visit. An excellent experience from beginning to end.
Coffee: The pourover was absolutely delicious and unlike a lot of coffee made, I could taste the individual flavours described. It is served beautifully with information about the bean, very useful. I tried the El Salvador and the Kenyan. This is the respect that coffee should be treated with! 😋
Food: the vegan breakfast was lovely, very flavoursome from the carrots to the hummus and pesto. Great value for money too.
Vibe: chilled out, great background music and excellent service that was very attentive, professional and knowledgeable.
Will definitely be back when I return to Nottingham. Thank you for the great experience.
A. R.
A popular cafe in Nottingham that also roasts their own coffee. Well worth a visit if you're in town. The coffee is delicious and as a general rule they have a great range of cakes and sandwiches among other foods.
S. S.
Popped in here for breakfast and had the mushrooms and poached eggs on toast which was lovely. I enjoyed my coffee but my partner wasn't a fan of his. The only negatives for me are that the shop is very small so can feel quite cramped and it's fairly pricey at around £20 for 2 breakfasts and 2 coffees (given the portion/coffee sizes).
V. M.
In-house roasted coffee, oat milk latte is extremely smooth and light. Welcoming interior, though limited seating so beware busy times.
The vegan lunch special was excellent - rustic selection of roasted veg chick peas and potatoes with hummus and pesto. Thoroughly enjoyable and the perfect size. Would like to see more vegan and veggie options but apart from that very recommended.
V. M.
Buff! The breakfast here was one of the best we've had, such a great cafe. You can tell a lot of care and thought into the ingredient used, the types of coffee and even the way they used the space. We sat next to where the coffee's were being made and it was so great to see their methods of making great coffee. Both of the vegan breakfast were greatly enjoyed! The home made dishes such as the relishes and tofu scramble, vegan butter etc were so clever! I am totally sold, and for sure we'll be back.
H.
Great little cafe which plenty of nutritious food choices. Staff are always lovely, it has a great vibe to the place.
G. H.
I can't believe I haven't got any photos of the cafe or drinks. A must if you are Nottingham, best Mocha around. Their brunch for hash chorizo is to die for. But the vegan option is just as good.
Great selection of tea and coffee. Their cappuccino is on point.
The atmosphere is so relaxed and chill, with the lovely friendly staff.
D. M.
Top quality tea, white hot chocolate and cake (they specialise in coffee but we didn't have any so can't comment!). Very helpful and friendly staff, service was a little slow but nothing too horrendous, we only noticed really because we had an appointment to get to
J. K.
Can I give 6 stars? This is such a charming place. The staff have unbridled passion and knowledge when it comes to coffee and food, and the customer service is exceptional. Amongst the most polite serving staff you will ever meet. The smoked salmon and eggs that I had were so good I would describe them as life-changing. If you want to explore your coffee palate and unlock the deeper complexities of the brew, then this is your kind of place.
V. H.
Popped in for coffee, saw the menu and decided to back the next day for breakfast. It did not disappoint, the food was freshly prepared and tasted great. Three empty plates say it all really. My daughters were both impressed with the range of coffee too. Well worth waiting 10 minutes for a table. Would happily have waited longer. It's quite a small place but appears to be busy all the time, which is what you want to see.
s.
Delicious and beautifully served brunch.
K. K.
Really tasty!
The best carrot cake I ever had. Everything is perfect... brew bar, service is perfect, professional staff! Quality of the coffees and the food is great so obviously that's why the price is higher. Go eat/drink somewhere else if you want cheaper option. But if you want to feel good and really taste what you put in your mouth.. give it a try and enjoy deliciousness! I wish I could live closer to this place or sth similar. As I've already visited more than 50 specialty coffee shops this one has its place in top 5 because of the same high level coffee and the food!
D.
Excellent breakfast and without a doubt the best cup of coffee I have ever had.. it makes you realise the absoloute muck mainstream outlets pump out.
The staff were friendly and pleasant, overall a very nice place to sit and relax.
Would 100% recommend to anyone.
J. O.
Really relaxed atmosphere due to the friendly staff and great music. The coffee is beautiful and I highly recommend the tasting flights which consists of a split shot of an espresso & a piccolo.
A. C.
Quite simply the best coffee around. Whether it’s buying beans to brew at home or drinking coffee out, it’s simply the best in Nottingham.
I used to buy my beans elsewhere, but now pretty much solely order from cartwheel.
J. H.
Great quality of coffee. Cozy atmosphere. I’d love to go back!
A. b.
Waited over an hour for breakfast with no explanation and dismissive answer when chased. Some elements only warm. Have had this recommended so maybe just hit a bad day.
I. A.
Lovely little independent cafe! Amazing coffee although not the cheapest but worth it for the standard of coffee they serve
Staff were lovely and helpful!
G. M.
First class coffee with a variety of brew options. Brunch was excellent. Atmosphere very relaxed. Definitely worth a visit.
k. m.
Amazing fresh orange juice, delicious vegan breakfast (although scrambled tofu wasn't great). 4 stars down to lack of cleanliness - lots of dirty tables and plates left, ours had also not been wiped down at all.
Would return, maybe it was just an off day!
J. M.
Probably the best coffee I’ve ever had.
P. L.
Hipster spot for coffee and light lunch. Flat white was great although tad too much foam. Raspberry and lemon tart topped with pine nuts was good, couldn't taste the raspberry. Will visit again though =)
B. S.
What a charming place for coffee lovers. Great friendly staff and a great vibe of the place, overall. Highly recommend checking it out!
S.
One of the best coffee spots in Nottingham. Staff are always very friendly. Every time I have had food here it has been amazing too. The egg and avocado is next level. We need more Cartwheels around Nottingham and less Starbucks/Costas.
J. B.
Really great place - well prepared coffee, lovely food, nice chilled atmosphere
g.
A superb food menu, great coffee, friendly staff, nice relaxed atmosphere, a highly recommend independent cafe
First time I have visited for over two years, and I am pleased to say the food is still fabulous, the coffee was good, the staff/service remains friendly and efficient, the atmosphere is still relaxed and welcoming.
Still an highly recommend cafe, that understandably gets very busy.
A. B.
Very lovely caffe and friendly staff. Would highly recommend.
H. S.
Great food for a lovely sunny day at Lace market Nottingham. Mediterranean Veg mixed shared platter should not be missed here with speciality tea and coffee.
There's a humongous spread of afternoon teas and cakes to pick from to be enjoyed with your friends and family alike.
(◍•ᴗ•◍)
O. S.
Amazing coffee as usual. Took a little while to be served and no one came back to my table to see if I wanted anything else ( I did 😢 ) but frankly the coffee is so good here the barista could have sworn at me and I'd still review this place positive as long as I got my coffee
P. S.
Amazing café. Attentive staff, exquisite food with a fantastic vegan and vegetarian options, and probably the best coffee in the Midlands. Don't miss out on this gem (or its sister site in Beeston!) If you're in the area drop in, if you're not go out of your way to visit.
H. M.
Simply superb. Amazing coffee, brilliant fresh food and great service. The focaccia sandwich we had was fresh, tasty and produced really quickly. Keep it up guys!
n.
Great coffee, lovely menu selection, really enjoyed our visit
R. B.
Wonderful Vegan Carrot Cake. Beautiful Handpour Coffee.
R. L.
I really love the brew method tasting, where a coffee is prepared as espresso and pour over so you can really see what affect brew method has on the taste. Particularly useful for comparing my home brew methods with cartwheel's excellent roast coffees!
m. c.
Good covid safety although got the impression if you haven't got the nhs app you can't go in.
Coffee and cake as good as ever
S. K.
Spent a a day working away on my laptop at the cafe while enjoying a well thought out delicious food menu.. had both the tea and coffee as well..great coffee!!! the tea containers(pseudo pots) need a lid though to keep the tea hot!!
T. L.
Very good coffee - my go too spot for coffee in Nottingham.
The space is a little pokey and narrow but it functions well regardless. A very good looking selection of cakes and food on offer. It's nice to observe a great deal of care and attention going into the coffee here resulting in great espresso based drinks (flat white was very good - milk was silky and not too hot) and very good hand brewed filters (I had a delicate floral Ethiopian as part of a tasting flight - good skill in brewing). Good price too. If I had to mark it down on anything I would just say that the service can be a little frosty.
C.
The perfect place for a bite to eat. A great menu, loved the vegan special today. Truly delicious! Great coffee, served beautifully! Hard working couple of guys serving and waiting on. Great atmosphere for lunch/coffee. Thanks so much. We loved it.
B. A.
Best of the best in Nottingham, breakfast / coffee is nice here.
J. S.
Got to know the coffee from here as the excellent roast beans are for sale in our local (also excellent) coffee shop "Bean" in Beeston. The roast beans are consistently excellent and they have a good variety of single origins and blends to cater for individual preference.
Good enough for me to ditch my usual supplier of whole beans and order from them regularly.
Also, today, my latest order got hand delivered, along with a complimentary cinnamon pastry which was absolutely stunningly good with a cup of superb espresso.
Thanks for supplying my coffee fix!
K. M.
Charming little cafe, with excellent food and coffee along with friendly customer service. Couldn't fault it, surprised I had not heard of it before, defo recommend
J. B.
Tasty coffee, and I use their beans at home, but the food we ordered (sausage focaccia, vegan breakfast) was really salty. I know that can be subjective, but every time I've eaten here I've come away feeling a bit ill, like I've been brined. Otherwise the food isn't bad at all. If they'd asked how the food was I would have mentioned it, but the staff seemed a bit rushed and maybe not having a great day, which I can understand.
M. H.
Best coffee I've ever had and excellent breakfasts also.
J. P.
Possibly my favourite ever coffee shop. Every time we go to Nottingham we end up here. The coffee's are always fantastic and the team really know their stuff. I always end up taking a bag or two of their beans home with me. The most recent Honduras coffee has to be one of the most unique and unusual coffees I've ever had the pleasure of tasting - so we left with two bags of it in hand! I don't know many coffee shops that have such an amazing array of coffee varieties to choose from. Oh and the food is delicious. The only trouble is we are always too full after lunch for the amazing looking cakes!
G. C. (.
The coffee and food here is amazing. I highly recommend dropping in for a bite to eat. The staff are lovely and always polite. The only problem is that its fairly small as a venue so seating can be limited. But otherwise amazing all round.
V. P.
Fantastic choice of coffee, we were really pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon this lovely magical place by accident. We'll be definitely back for more, had only time for a quick but exquisite coffee this time! Keep up the good work, guys! Slightly pricey but hey the atmosphere is worth every penny, too
L. K.
This is my favorite cafe/study spot in Nottingham! Simple but beautiful food that's fresh, wholesome, and priced very reasonably, and a very good selection of drinks. I'm not a coffee drinker, but the coffee selection looks very good to an outsider, haha. The melted white chocolate is heaven in a cup, and the roasted oolong is delicious. Plus, with the teas, a second infusion is included. Don't leave without drinking round two!
The service is top notch as well, always prompt, polite, and cheerful. I swear one is benevolently psychic - he guessed what I was having (a dish I'd never tried here before) before I even ordered! :P
J. T.
Not a good coffee. It’s a GREAT coffee! Try this and I think you would agree. They only serve single origin bean San José Peru de Lourdes and that’s what make the difference. If we had to drive 2.5 hours to Nottingham for this, we will do it again.
n. m.
Excellent fresh roasted coffee with knowledgeable staff helping to guide you. Offering drip and siphon options, there are lot of subtle flavours profiles to be discovered when selecting from their global menu. But as with any good coffee don't be surprised when it takes 5-10 minutes to get to you.
M.
My order is Flat white it was good I recommend it!! 😁
C. D.
Most amazing nicoise salad, went one afternoon in the sun, lucky to get it as they only had one left. Really good space and nice to sit in. Does get a bit cramped when super busy at lunch time. Coffee has nice flavour, think you should expand the 'coffee board' to hold a larger selection of artisan coffee. Second time we went they had shrunk the salad but still tasted awesome.
R. C.
Wow, love this cafe. My daughter and I loved the Japanese tea plus I had the most amazing mushrooms. Couldn't leave without taking away some delicious white chocolate blondies also!
C. G.
Brilliant indie spot for coffee and brunch/lunch, food is great, super interesting coffee menu- recommend the espresso and tonic on a hot day!
F. C.
One of my favourite places in Nottingham. Amazing coffee. Great tea. Really quirky. Nice food too! Also a bonus that they're an independent.
T. B.
If you consider yourself a foodie, this is where you should go. The menu is exquisite and when it arrives at your table it lives up to its description. It's also brilliant for vegans, gluten frees, veggies, that kind of thing. They are serious about their coffee, but also experts on teas from around the world. Its a small place, excellent service, good value too.
R. R.
Best Cafe in Nottingham, food is excellent made with quality ingredients, good price. Service is wonderful and staff are friendly. Lovely laid back ambience vibes
G. B.
Nice coffee and cool vibe. Curiously you don't pay for your drink when ordering or when it's delivered, but seemingly on your departure. I asked to pay my bill. Very chilled and trusting, but don't know how they keep track of who's paid when it's busy like when I was there.
D. F.
Its amazing if your looking for great coffee and great food at sensible prices then come here and great customer service and knowledge about your coffee
t. s.
right in the centre of Nottingham. only has a small front so be careful not to miss it. great service, simple well thought out menu. being vegan i had oatmilk latte and lemon and poppy seed cake. both were outstandingly good.
l. l.
Now *this* is the best coffee in Nottingham. No bitterness No sourness just great coffee. Exceptional customer service, fair selection of gluten free food ( few different cakes would be good) will 100% be back. Thank you :)
L. M.
The smashed Avo and egg is just to die for. Excellent food, can't recommend enough.
A. M.
Amazing vegan breakfasts, lovely friendly staff
L. D. M.
A unique coffee experience in a pleasant setting. Worth the extra pennies!
M. M.
great food but terrible coffee. my flat white with oat milk tasted like sushi rice - so strange!! my mum’s americano and stepdad’s flat white with normal milk tasted weird too. food really was tasty though, and all with fresh ingredients cooked there and then.
J. W.
Awesome coffee and a concise but great food menu. Friendly and attentive staff too.
We had the Vegan Special and a couple of coffee’s, it definitely hit the spot.
D. B.
The food at Cartwheel is always good. The space is contemporary & modern. The staff are nice, and the service is quick, plus the coffee is really good. They also have outdoor seating!
A. N.
Small and cosy with a lovely bright interior due to the large windows. The staff are absolutely brilliant, welcoming, friendly and polite. The brunch was huge and is easily one the best in Nottingham. Fantastic coffee too.
V. T.
The coffer wasn't great but the smashed avocado and eggs was to die for!! I wish I had taken a photo of the dish!
J. E.
Splendid coffee and great atmosphere to work in (+ good vegan options)
J. W.
Exactly what I want from a coffee shop. A choice of single origin coffee, and the option to have them brewed in a Syphon or as pour over. Didn't get chance to try the food, but many nice looking items on the menu. Friendly service.
A. N.
Really excellent coffee shop. I love to order the Ethiopian pour over. Very friendly staff. Whenever you order something extra they get all excited. As if no-one has ever ordered that thing before. I asked for the Bircher Muesli. And news of this immediately rippled through the staff.
"you're ordering the bircher muesli?"
"someone's ordered the bircher muesli!!!!!"
"oh my gawwwwwwwwwwwwwwd!"
L. K.
The service was friendly, genuine and attentive. Coffee was fantastic. My Sister had the vegan special and I had the chorizo dish, absolutely delicious. Highly recommend 👍
k. C.
In Nottingham for 2 days and been twice.

The interior is under cool too. Must have to sneak back before I leave.

Lovely busy little place. List of amazing coffees served drip or siphon from all different places. The food was amazing and reasonably priced too
C. M.
Great tasting coffee and delicious food (also really nice chocolate and salted caramel tart). Prices reflect the quality of the food and drinks.
A. C.
Extremely good coffee and excellent service. Little touches like gorgeously tiled walls and beautiful plants in the bathroom make this a great place to slowly enjoy a coffee.
A. o. a. G. T.
Great little hidden cafe with great lunch and cake options
S. S.
A brilliant addition to Nottingham's ever improving food scene. High quality coffee coupled with very tasty food: the superfood salad and smoked chicken packs a punch. The first couple of times I went I used it as a nice quiet place to work whilst waiting for trains - now it is a bustling bohemian bolt-hole where people are queueing for tables! They are definitely doing something right.
A. M.
Excellent coffee using a variety of brewing methods. Food, including subs GF options. Friendly & knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend.
S. H.
Perfect place for speciality coffee. Friendly people.
G. O.
Amazing coffee and great food, well balanced flavours.

Place is amazing! Great food that entices your senses! Many gluten-free and vegan options available - all of them are absolutely delicious.
J. “. C.
The staff are absolutely lovely and the decor has a nice clean look. I have yet to try the food which I look forward to in the future, I have enjoyed an espresso and a Kenyan pour over coffee.
P. B.
I have made two visits to the friendly Cartwheel, and will be returning again, when I'm in town. The Cartwheel Burger was good and the lattes excellent. My granddaughter devoured her croissant with great delight.
F. K.

Great teas and decent selection of cakes... not sure if they were home made or bought in though as they weren't fresh, slightly crusty. Staff were nice and the atmosphere was chilled.

(Translated) It is a perfect place to have breakfast or have a brunch at noon. The coffee is great, they grind it and they filter themselves. The dishes are usually quite nutritious and healthy, they are made with great care. Attention is very good and close, are very friendly. To repeat.
