Reviews of Thirsty Meeples
J. B.
We visited here for my daughter's birthday as we both love playing games. It was a lovely afternoon and I actually won a game! Very welcoming and helpful staff who give you advice on games to look at and how to play. A decent selection of food and drink is also available and a wide range of games. I never come out empty handed!! 🤦
L. F.
Absolutely loved it we went two nights in a row during our trip to Oxford. We had so much fun trying out the games. Mark was so lovely to us, even giving time to fully explain the rules of one of his personal recommendations despite the cafe being busy. Yes it’s a bit pricey, will definitely add up for a big group and the drinks are on the expensive side. However my hot chocolate was lovely, and the game selection is great.

We had a great time playing board games at Thirsty Meeples in Oxford. A cafe plus board games is right up our street so we had to visit. As you can see from the photos there are lots of board games to choose from. Our server/games expert recommended games to us based upon on games we had previously played and liked. It was good to try new games and to have a very quick and informative explanation on how to play. The food and drink menu was also great - lots of choice on hot drinks and cold ones; alcohol and soft. A couple of coffees, a sausage roll and a sarnie in the space of 3 hours of playing was enough fuel to keep the enjoyment and mind sharp. We will be back to enjoy an evening of board games with friends and family in the near future and we would fully recommend Thirsty Meeples to anyone visiting Oxford.

Have visited this board game twice now and enjoyed the wide variety of boardgames and good selection of food and drinks :)! There were a lot of space both in the front and in the back area and booking online was very easy as well. Their website is really well made and you can check all the 2700?? Boardgames they have online to prepare and when we asked for certain boardgames they found it quickly.
We were struggling a little bit to set up one of the game and the staff member gave us an alternative one which was a good suggestion. Monday evening was quite quiet so felt they had enough staff but on Saturday morning our slot was from 10 but the shop did not open until 10 minutes pass 10 but was told to leave at 13 on dot. It felt they were quite under staffed and I think a bit more customer care could have been lovely because we were told they cannot help with choosing a game.
I have had other board game cafes that have higher customer service but overall when we had questions they came to help and I also liked that there were so many varieties of teas in pots rather than tea bags! Also the staff member explained to us that coffee beans comes from UE coffee and it was really delicious :)!! Will be back definitely ! Also having some student discounts or rewards could be good :)

We had a great evening, Mark (our game guru) was really knowledgable, asked us some questions to figure out which games would suit us and then we spent the evening playing! The menu is fab, from snack/sweet bowls to hot food, smoothies and shakes to hot drinks and cocktails.

I've taken friends there a few times, and it's always been fantastic.
The games don't seem too worn out or dirty, which is a relief. The staff were generally friendly and helpful. They did a great job of recommending us a game when we wanted one, and just letting us browse when we didn't. The drinks are pretty expensive, but really nice. I got the pistachio milk shake once, and it was really too sweet (I think they put pistachio syrup in it, but it must have been way too much)
Overall, great place. I'll definitely go again! :)

Can’t say enough good things about this place. Awesome board game cafe, for with and without kids. Amazing game library; super friendly staff will help you choose and teach you rules (unless you are after something obscure). Old classics and new releases. Great food, from savoury to cakes. Quality coffee and tea. Very good range of beer and cocktails. And can buy games there. Was UK’s first board game cafe and has become an Oxford institution. We have been going for years and never not been brilliant.

Ohhh, the Thirsty Meeples!
An absolutely OUTSTANDING board game cafe. My experience may be colored by the fact that it's the first one I ever went to and I was super enchanted by the idea...but nevertheless, we had an absolutely incredible time on all our visits.
Their cocktails are amazing (try the Brazilian Monk for a decadent dessert drink) and they have snacks and coffee, too.
Really impressive collection of board games for all skills, ages, and interests. Staff are fun and friendly and make great recommendations.
If you're looking for a great way to spend the night with pals in Oxford, look no further. I miss this place.

Really good selection of games. Few issues for me personally, the girl serving us was pretty blunt. Bordering on rude, very quick to shoot down any/most requests, couldn't have sweets etc after a certain time (which I understand)... yet see her bringing them to another table after id mentioned it. 5/5 to the manager and guy in the blue, really friendly, helped us select a quick game before we left. Also came over with a note regarding a similar place where we live.
D. L.
It was a great experience. I really missed going there as the last time was before the lockdown. Wearing masks are optional, there are sanitiser stations around. In terms of games, there are still a wide selection of games and the attendants were really helpful with the explanation of the games. I went on a Friday and it wasn't busy.
D. E.
Friendly, relaxing atmosphere to try new games and replay favourites. Excellent well stocked library with something for every group or individual. Staff are knowledgeable and approachable. Would absolutely recommend a visit!
C.
Staff are always happy to go through the rules. However sometimes staff can be a little distant/bored. I picked up an ordered game a few weeks ago and it was as if I was being an inconvenience to that staff member. So 1 star off for hit-or-miss staff.
However they do have a great selection of games and the menu is reasonably priced for Oxford. Another issue I have is sticking to 3 hours otherwise paying an extra £6/person if you want to stay even just an extra hour. A £2/hour rule would be much better and allow me to relax during my time there - and I'd probably stay longer and go more frequently for a quick coffee and game. Also, if they close early and you loose an hour they don't offer any sort of refund or e.g. a free drink/snack. So 1 star off for the pricing/time slot system.
I. S. (.
Loads of board games available, pretty cool atmosphere and good food/drink options. However drinks/food/admission is all a little bit pricey for what it is, plus you have to book a time slot which kind of sucks if you have to pack up your game halfway through.
H. A.
Great selection of games but need to improve on those people who can teach you to play games. We picked three different games and no one could teach us them so we spent most of our session trying to figure out how to play them.
J. B.
Great. Wish they stocked some of The Civitas Universe games, but maybe that will be the case as the series gains more traction. Other than that, a lovely place with friendly staff and a big variety!
R. G.
Great place to spend family time with children (probably best age for kids would be 7+). The staff was knowledgeable and advised us on the best board games to go for and they were very friendly.
A. G.
Great selection of games as always. Got bonus promo cards with my purchase, which is always nice.
G. C.
Great boardgame café. Good food, immense selection of games, friendly staff, games for everyone
R. S.
Great game cafe, loads of games to pick from and staff are very friendly and approachable. You can just turn up and play or you can reserve a table if a few of you are going. No need to know what you want to play or the rules. You can ask and they will pick one depending on what type of games you like and they will tell you how to play it to get you started quicker! They also sell loads of games here at great value! Worth a visit!
E. W.
What an amazing idea. Loved it a lot. Service is great, you get good recommendations on games. Food is nice too
Really loved it and will definitely be back!
J. M.
Amazing place. They have a lot of board games. You can purchase some as well. Book in advance. Service is awesome and their dark mocha is delicious.
A.
Very fun the food is good and there is so many games to play like you won't get bored I recommend going their with a group of friends/family even with just two people it's great.
H.
Great selection of board games and drinks. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The games to buy are also a decent price.
G. C.
Fantastic LFGS. Staff always helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Super selection of games. Have only so far been in to buy not to play but hope to one day.
L.
I love this place! A great place to hang out with friends and play some fun games. Such a wide selection to choose from, and staff are great at giving recommendations if you aren't sure what you want to play. Great menu too!
C. A.
A seriously fantastic place, grab a drink, grab a game and hunker down for a few hours. With an incredible selection of games to choose from you will be spoilt for choice, it is recommended that you make a reservation in the evening to guarantee game time.
Have a question? They have the answer. The employees are so knowledgeable both with recommendations and explaining how to play a game which is very impressive considering the sheer amount of games available.
Don't be surprised if you walk home with a new game or two!
J. C.
Lovely atmosphere and kind staff. They will sit down with you and teach the rules for a game play a round, to make sure you understand, then let you carry on. Very interesting idea and well executed.
R. M.
Interesting place. A crazy amount of board games to pick from. If you are thinking on playing a complicated game for the first time, this might not be the place as could be a bit pricey (£6/person/3 hrs). Otherwise, is quite fun! they have couple wine options, beers, coffee, snacks, everything to make your stay fun.
D. C.
Bought online from them for ages, glad to be able to try out the store in person. Good selection of food and drinks and good service.
C. W.
Kids love it, so many games, good service and drinks too
L. S.
It was a really cool date night, and nice to test out games we never would have thought of. Thought the prices would be fine when we booked, but did not know how small the portions would be so it added up quickly, still not too bad for Oxford though. Bummer was how rude the tall guy was when we checked in. Overall not worth the cost to come again unless it was with a group, but fun to try once.
Thankfully the guy who helped us and explained the game was really nice.
J. D.
A great place that allows you to sit down and play a massive range of games whilst you get something to eat and drink. Also an extensive range of board games for sale. It's moved a few doors down to a bigger shop space making it easier to get in and browse the games for sale without those disturbing those sat in playing a game. I always call in on the chance of finding a new game or two to play with the family
C. G.
Loved it! Great experience! Good for boardgame experts as well as rookies for they explain the rules and help you get everything setup.
K. M.
Didn't actually plan on coming here but the prices and wide range of games lured me in. Staff are really knowledgeable about the games and are super friendly. Food and drink was pretty cheap and there's a clean loo in the back. Would recommend to any tourists
B. V.
Fun but expensive. The staff are knowledgeable about the huge range of board games. You tell them what type of game you want to play and they bring back a selection which they explain and then let you choose.
You can swap as many times as you want. We tried 3 games in the time we were there. A 3 hour slot is what you pay for, although they were not making us leave as it wasn't busy. It's definitely fun to be out and playing with friends with a good drink.
Having said that, for 4 of us our evening came to approx ~£20-£30 per person, which isn't exactly cheap. We did have cocktails and a couple of snacks to share. Remember that you're also paying a table "rental" cost per person to take up table space for 3 hours and play a large selection of board games.
For me personally, if you're wanting to play a game you know... you could buy it and lots of drinks and food for the same price and own the game. However, where this becomes interesting, is when you want to play a new game, you're unsure what game or whether you would like a game, you can go there, spend a lovely evening with very nice and knowledgeable staff, good snacks and drinks and have an evening away from home. Definitely found new games I will buy.
It's a 4 star because of the great staff, great, relaxed atmosphere and only drops 1 star for cost. Its not an every weekend thing. But would be at a slightly lower cost.
t. f.
Mr Green transformed my thursty meeples experiences was handsome and warm
R. O.
Absolutely love this place. Beer on tap and more board games you could play in a lifetime. Staff are amazingly knowledgeable and explain the games exceptionally well.
M. G.
Expensive cover charge meant that as a family, it was too expensive for us all. However we decided to buy a game for the money we would have spent. Very friendly knowledgeable staff spent time helping us choose games.
S. F.
Went on a Monday evening, didn't book but it was fairly quiet so managed to get a table. Staff were great and the game guru helped get us playing in no time. You have to wait for them to bring you a game as you can't browse with Covid restrictions so prepare to be patient (there's a full list of games on their website). It's a little on the pricey side (as most things in Oxford) but would recommend.
M. H.
very large selection of games for purchase, including some lesser known ones!
M. S.
Always love coming to thirsty meeples. Great atmosphere, welcoming staff and amazing food and drink
G. C.
Amazing selection of games in the library. Great introductions from a member of staff to fun new games. A great time out.
R. J.
This is a marvel of a place in central Oxford. Welcoming staff, brilliant environment, fantastic set of games to play and a great shop. If you enjoy board games, both known and ready for discovery then this is a must visit.
A. B.
Excellent Board Game Cafe. Huge selection of games which the staff are happy to explain to you (how to play) decent vegetarian options for snacks and drinks. Need to book ahead!
Spacious and clean.
S. K.
A classic board game café, make sure to book a table as it can be very busy.
T. P.
Great place for a quiet afternoon out! A booking is definitely needed. Can book 3 hour slots, more than enough time to have awesome fun. Fantastic selection of boardgames, and the staff here are so knowledgeable with a huge amount of the games. Definitely something here for everyone. The cakes & drinks options are really good as well, really worth it! 100% going to return here.
E. B.
I've been here several times and always enjoy myself whether it is just two people or a big group. They have a wide selection of games, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, and nice hot beverages. For less than 10 pounds, you can play games for three hours and have a nice drink. A good way to test out board games before you buy or get ideas for gifts as well.
P.
We had a very fun evening here. Excellent choice of games. Coffee was good.
N. J.
We had a lovely afternoon out as a family. We used the simple online booking system to reserve a table. The staff were very helpful finding appropriate board games and taking us through the rules to get us started. The cafe food and drinks were great (especially the beer selection!). The afternoon flew by. Highly recommended!
C. P.
Awesome! The staff have great knowledge of their game selection and are able to select the games you'll find easy to learn as well as those which are fun to play. Many games also available to buy if you find one you like.
Speedy service at the table, good selection on the menu, both alcoholic and non alcoholic and prices are reasonable. Will definitely go again.
C. B.
The website isn’t updated so you can still book slots that end after 10pm - meaning we paid for 3 hours but only got 2. They should either reduce the price or update slots so you get the full 3 hours. Also, my friend was not allowed to bring birthday cake in. I understand not bringing food in normally but for a birthday it was a bit far fetched (there was a £1.9 plate charge each!) However, James was really nice and helpful and suggested perfect games for us really quickly! He explained them really well as well. The food is a tad overpriced also but overall it is really fun and a great day, so I would recommend.
H.
This place is great! I have visited a few board game cafes in various places and this one in Oxford has by far the biggest selection of games on offer to play.
The guys were super friendly and very good at both helping us to choose a game that would suit our needs and also explaining the rules to us.
The beers were tasty and the place had a nice vibe. I would also recommend purchasing any games from here to support the local community! They were actually priced lower than Amazon (to our surprise) in order to be competitive! Highly recommended!
G. S.
Decent place. Quite pricey compared to other similar places (even in London) to play. Drinks are over priced. Good selection of boardgames of course and the prices for buying them are average and expected for brick and mortar stores. Staff are friendly and helpful. Nice atmosphere with young and old all playing at tables. Would go back.
A. S.
Very friendly and helpful staff, loads of games to choose from, great vibes all round
A. A.
A nice board games cafe. You have to pay per hour for playing games. The rates are cheaper if you order a drink.
They have a wide variety of games. They can support groups of all sizes: from 2 to 10+. Short games, long games; serious games, casual games; deck building games, dungeon crawlers; they have many board games that will suit your needs/wants.
The staff is also awesome and will recommend games or even teach you how to play them if you ask them.
T. H.
I had never been to a board game cafe before and this experience was awesme, a really fun night. You book a time slot and the staff will ask roughly what you want to play and will bring their suggestion over. Each of their suggestions were really fun.
The knowledge the staff had about each of the games was excellent and they give you an introduction to your chosen game so you can get to paying quickly.
Great atmosphere, very affordable and you can get a coffee, cake or a beer for whilst you're playing.
F.
Great selection of games. Really good drinks - I recommend checking out the "Oxford Fog" tea. Some cute attention to detail too with board game squares decorating around the mirror in the toilet! But by far the best thing about this place is the staff - they are without exception enthusiastic about board games and so helpful when it comes to explaining how to play an unfamiliar game. Top way to spend an afternoon! 😀
J. F.
Absolutely lovely visit to the café today. Staff were friendly as ever, played some great games, and was a shame we couldn't stay longer. We will be back very soon.
A. v. d. M.
If you love board games this place is a must. Didn't have a chance to sit down and play a game, but it looked incredible with staff helping people play new games.
j. h.
I visited for my birthday and had a great time. The staff took time to show us the rules of games, check that we had everything we needed and just generally be around if we needed them. We played a number of games in the 3 hour slot. Food and snack options were good, drink options were ok and game options were almost endless.
I had a fun time (even though I lost practically every game!) and Thirsty Meeples made by birthday great! Thanks:)
A. D.
I love coming here, there is a great atmosphere, and wide selection of board games, to play and to buy. The food is very nice, and the decoration also. The staff are really friendly, and will teach you how to play any of the games. There are also contests held here. If you want to visit I strongly recommend booking in advance, as it is very popular.
F. R.
A wonderful little find, the staff were really helpful and friendly. We wanted to play something we have not played before, gave a few suggestions of what we liked and picked out three brilliant games, we had great fun playing all of them. We ordered a tea and coffee, both really lovely and served quickly even though very busy. Would definitely need to book on weekends but well worth it.
S. H.
If you like board games, this will be a little glimpse of heaven for you. Great staff who are so knowledgeable about all board games. The only thing I would say is that hot drinks are always a bit disappointing even though they sound exciting on the menu. Other than this I highly recommend. Oh and always book in advanced, especially at weekends.
M. R.
Absolutely love this place! Guru's are lovely, the tea is wonderful, and the board games are (of course) fantastic!
P. H.
I love Thirsty Meeples! The first boardgames cafe in the UK, I've been going regularly ever since it opened, usually to play X-Wing at the Wednesday night sessions. Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful staff. The games collection is outstanding. There's a nice buzz about the place, with people of all ages and genders. It's also a great place to buy games at very reasonable prices.
A few negatives: the decor is looking a bit tired, especially the loo; the tables are a little on the small side; it gets very crowded in there sometimes; the food on offer is pretty uninspiring.
S.
If you want to buy a board game, this is the place for you. If you are not sure what to buy (the variety is overwhelming), the personnel in there are very happy to help you and their knowledge of the products is great. Additionally, you can sit there with some friends and try some games while having a coffee. However, if you'll be having a seat, you'll have to pay a fee per person and the maximum stay is 3 hours.
R. S.
What a fantastic place. My partner took me here because she loves board games and I am merely an out of place novice. The guys who worked here took their time to explain how the place works, how each game was played, then helped us choose which games to play. Fantastic place where all levels of players are welcome😎😎😎
Good beer selection too🍺🍺🍺
J. R.
Great experience, friendly staff and good drinks selection. Table booked for three hours play, the staff guided us through at least six games with brilliant knowledge of all games supplied. Would highly recommend.
A. K. (. К.
Most original and fun board games café - they really know their stuff and have a wide selection of games. The menu is also good, especially the cakes. You can also buy games, usually for less than on Amazon, and they can recommend good games based on what you have enjoyed before.
M. B. (.
Love this place!
A cafe that lets you play boardgames for 3 hours, what could be better?
Simply book a slot and turn up, the table rental if cheaper if you get food or drink, which we always do.
Ever wanted to try a game without buying or just try something new?
This place is perfect, and when your finished you can even buy a new copy of games you where playing either in their store or order it in.
P.s. Good milkshakes too.
T. C.
A friend and I had never been and even though it was a Saturday night they gave us a reservation. We ended up playing two games twice. The staff was very helpful in picking and then explaining the games, and the drinks and food we got was good. Would highly recommend to both the experienced board gamer and the novice.
C. V.
A board game fan's paradise. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful in finding the right game - much needed with so many on offer!
Great selection of drinks too.
It was very busy when we went, warm and loud. Not the best conditions to play strategy games admittedly.
Otherwise though this is a really fun, unique place for all ages, groups.
G. G.
We've been here a few times now and this is one of the bests for certain. My husband I have been buying our games online from here since we started gaming about one year ago. The tea and cake selections are fantastic. Last time we visited we played terraforming mars and they brought out a table topper for us and everyone is just so friendly and doesn't make you feel they just want your money. Highly recommend
L. D.
I've always had a great time here, fun for friends, families or first dates. The friendly staff help you choose the best games for your group and the selection of drinks is good and extensive. Both the teas and the beers offer interesting flavours and decent quality. It's only a shame that it's not a bigger space as it's always fairly busy and it needs another toilet. I would recommend booking a table as yoy may find many tables are reserved.
Z.
A fine way to while away 3 hours. Posh tea/coffee, interesting beers and plenty of games to choose from. They'll even help you learn to play some of the more involved games. Service can be a touch slow when busy, you need to book a table in advance.
L. W.
Only been once, but the staff were excellent. Rumour has it they have to know the full rules of 100 games to be a staff member there. Not sure if this is true or not, but they certainly knew a great deal about all the ones we wanted to have a go at!
Delicious cakes, a great board game selection and friendly staff, what more could you ask for from a cafe?
M. T.
Very disappointed. Pre-order of a game that never materialized, communication for the most part was like pulling teeth, had the get a friend who goes to the store regularly to get any reply to emails. Then communication went completely had to request a refund via PayPal. Shame.
E. R.
The new building is big, great for social distancing and also the staff use ppe and offer hand sanitiser. The game library is very extensive and the staff have a very vast knowledge on how to play them.
However our visit was a bit hit and miss. The first thing said to us by a staff member was sarcastic and then the game we wanted was thrown on the table to us. It was clear he didn't want to be there. The person that took our orders was friendly at first but then became more rude as the time went on. However the guy that explained the last game we played was so friendly and made a very awkward experience fun.
We are a friendly group of people who are quiet enough and keep to ourselves. It is a shame we were made to feel unwelcome for more than half of our visit.
K. B.
Great games cafe. Lots of games to choose from and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help, if needed. Great selection of drinks and snacks.
I. H.
Staff are great and friendly, huge selection of board games, lots of options on the menu. Made for a really awesome night. Just make sure everyone you've booked for comes as you will have to still pay for that slot (for groups over 4).
A. L.
Great place for the kids or the bigger adult kids who love board games. You can select your tea/coffee etc and start playing a board game. Sadly I cannot remember the costs involved. The whole family can play a game! Great to see the kids in there enjoying themselves immersed in actual board games instead of computer games.
S. F.
I like this place. Its shelves full of games you would never imagine they exist, fanatic gamers among the stuff, nice drinks and snacks. On the other hand, it's true that you could buy your own game for the money spent on the cover fee. And that's exactly what we've done with our friends.
We still visit it from time to time to test new games.
Oh, and they could work on their ventilation.
M. R.
2000 board games. 2000 board games! Excellent. Loved it and really helpful service. Games are recommended and you get help starting to play them. Food is good too.
R. E.
I went with a group of 5 people to visit the store for the day. We knew we would have to buy food and drink there, but I was a little shocked at the high prices for the average quality products.
It was also VERY busy. So busy that I was constantly having my chair nudged a little. Because of the people - it got hot FAST.
Thats the bad out of the way, the good was the range of the games. WE had a small list of games we wanted to play, and they had them all. The staff knew their games - and quickly explained the rules to us - giving us more time to play.
They sell games and we found them to be reasonable.
However, due to the cost of the food and drink (and travel costs), it will pay us to buy the board game. If we don't like it, we can always sell it. We could have bought 2 of the 3 games we played for the price we paid.
N. D.
I came with my mom and sister and we had an absolutely brilliant time. The staff really do make you feel at home. Simon, the cafe manager, so patiently (and passionately!) introduced us to several new games and taught us two. On a practice run I instinctively thought for a minute he was playing with us! That's how relaxed and friendly the environment is. On top of all that, they actually have some vegan options on their menu. I will definitely be returning.
My mom and sister are hoping for branches to open in their towns in the US.
P. S.
Ordered a game from them online. Game arrived the following day and in excellent condition. I will definitely be using them again.

This was our first experience of a board game cafe and it was fantastic.
The staff really know their stuff and will sit down with you to talk about what kind of game you're looking to play, help you find something to fit your tastes and experience, and then even take you through the rules until you feel comfortable. This could be an issue if there weren't enough staff, but there were plenty on hand while we were there.
The drink options were good, with craft beer and nice milkshakes available. Food wasn't quite as impressive (it's just sandwiches and snacks) but it'd be perfectly adequate to keep you going.
Tables are available to book in 3 hour blocks, I'd recommend this as it was full when we went (apart from our booked table).
Note that they charge a cover charge per person - so even if you only go and game, you'll still have to pay - which seems perfectly reasonable.
A. P.
It's always such a fun place to visit. The staff are friendly and so knowledgeable, they'll gladly help you pick a suitable game. Make sure to book in advance if you want to secure a table, as it gets busy, especially at weekends.
A. P.
They recently relocated a couple of doors down from the original store. It's very busy and noisy. Also there is no ventilation and it can get quite stuffy. I've never had a good coffee from here and have given up on them ever producing one. They have all the equipment but no one seems to know how to use it properly. The staff are generally very friendly and helpful.
z.
Wide selection of games and helpful, friendly staff who certainly know their games really make this place tick over. Drinks menu is great and some hot and cold bar snacks are served. Book at least a fortnight in advance for large parties though if there's only 2-4 of you, you can often get in on the day.
G. S.
Great place to play board games and have some lovely drinks. It has a great selection of tea's and beer's. The snack bowls are nice but a bit pricey and service can take a while if busy.
Has some great prices if you want to buy a boardgame, very competitive with online retailers.
One of my favourite places in Oxford and I can easily recommend it to all.
S. N.
A truly amazing place right in the heart of Oxford and the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon and evening. They've got interesting beers available, alright snacks, a good selection of non alcoholic drinks and, of course, a great selection of games, which would be for naught if it weren't for the helpful and insightful games-sommeliers who will recommend several games and explain their rules in a surprisingly short time. If you can, try to make a reservation in advance as the place is often packed (wish they would colonize one of their neighbors)
I. T.
If you love board games, you'll love this place, with more board games for you to try than you ever thought possible. You might even understand the name. The drinks and food offerings are minimal. You're here for the games, remember.
The staff are friendly and enthusiastic about the games.
One of a kind.
S. C.
Good food and drink and helpful, happy staff who are knowledgable about the games you can play or buy. A winning combination and well deservedly so.
s. c.
The most awesome way to liven up a cup of coffee or tea. Soooo many games, they even sell gamer nibbles.
I got here around 12.00 to meet a friend and check out the board games (so many, many games.) when we left it was the evening.
The atmosphere is rather that of a board game club and the staff are so helpful when it comes to picking games and learning the basics fast.
Frankly if I could afford to live here I would. ❤️
T. C.
Great rainy day activity. Booked the day before, you get a table for 3 hours. £5 cover charge each. The guys are very helpful, recommend a game of our preferred type and explained the rules to us. This saved a lot of the confusion playing a new game. We bought sandwiches and coffees while we played (reasonably priced). Had time for a quick second game too. Will definitely be going back!
J. Y.
For £6/7.50 per person it's money well spent. 3 hours of fun, as many board games as you can fit in and a fitting selection of food and drink. Had a great time, can't wait to go back.
S.
First visit here but not our first board game cafe. They have a huge selection of games and some decent food and drink options. We tried sandwiches, porridge and the cous cous pot (all delicious). It is all quick snack type food but that is what you want when you are trying to spend your time gaming!
But without doubt the most impressive part of this cafe is the staff! They were so attentive, coming over to take our order when we perused the menus and again coming over to make game recommendations when we finished our current one. 3 different guys brought us over their recommendations and taught us the games and they were all so quick, fun and engaging whilst teaching us!
A. S.
Fantastic selection of games old favourites and up to date games. The best thing is how knowledgeable the staff are you can get to grips with a brand new game in minutes. The food and drink is of a standard you would expect from any high end cafe.
A. N.
Definitely best place to play board game in Oxford. The staff is very helpful too! Would visit again
D. B.
A truly awesome place. You will need to book ahead during peak times but the staff will try to accommodate wherever possible (we got a table for 45 mins before another booking). Best with a group of friends to have a snack, a couple of drinks and play a few games.
The staff are really knowledgeable and could get you excited about pretty much any game.
You can also buy games there too.
A. R.
My favourite way to spend an afternoon. Board games, drinks, and snacks! And if you don't know many games, helpful staff will offer suggestions and even teach you how to play.
A. Y.
Love it. There is a huge selection of board games, lots of good drinks, and cakes, and a friendly atmosphere. Heaven!
The boardgame gurus are really helpful at suggesting games you would like and then explaining them, and prices to buy games are very reasonable.
L.
Amazing selection of boardgames, and knowledgeable game gurus. Boardgames for sale are reasonably priced and competitive with online stores.
T. J.
About a year ago I first visited this board game cafe with my other half, brother and his other half. Now whenever I'm in the Oxford area I make it a must visit.
Every time we have visited we are greeted by friendly staff who are more than happy to help you learn a new game, without pandering to you.
On top of this the food and drink options are vast and everything on their menu we have tried was beautiful.
Now the board games. There are a broad range of board games from new releases, old classics and stupid fun games to choose from. It truly is staggering what there is on offer to play. If you find one you like there's a chance it'll be there for purchase too at a reasonable price, much like everything else in the place.
A. O.
Awesome boardgame cafe. The staff knows their stuff and get you in a gaming mood from the minute you sit down, and unless someone is really yelling in another table, the noise level is totally tolerable. Plus they have an impressive list of beers.
S. C.
Great selection of games. Brought our 10 and 6 year old with us and they enjoyed it. Very helpful who could recommend a game and tell us how to play it which saved us valuable playing time! Lovely coffee too!
C. F.
Setup was good, games were good, food was ok, drinks were great. But our service (tall chap, beard) was disinterested to the point of being hostile. If you can pick out who serves you, do it. You'll have a better time.
T. S.
This place is amazing! They really do have hundreds of different games here for you to try out -- pretty much any one you can think of and loads you can't. You book a three-hour session and can play any games you want.
The staff here are extremely knowledgeable and will always give you helpful suggestions of what games to play and help you get set up and started on each one. The drawback with this is that when it's busy it's hard to get someone's attention if you want to order extra drinks or food or anything. For us, it also meant that the first 15 minutes of our session were wasted waiting for help!
That aside, this is a must for anyone wanting to while away a rainy afternoon and discover something new. Booking is a must and the food and drink are a little on the pricey side, but I suspect that's how they make their money to keep the place running, so I'm not complaining!
J. W.
Unique place to go. Great for all ages. Staff knowledgeable and welcoming. Food and drink on offer diverse. So many games to choose from the staff will help narrow the choices down. One loo though which considering it gets busy it could do with at least a couple more. Definitely worth a visit to open your mind to the many non commercial games out there
C. B.
Love coming here. If your question is "do they have..? " then the answer is yes. You get 3 hours on a table which may seem like a lot, but goes quickly, especially if you're in a big group. Because of that, I feel like it's better suited to discover new games for you to play at home with your friends. There are knowledgeable and friendly staff on hand at all times to answer any questions and they provide a good selection of food and drink.
C. H. (.
First things first, the selection of games is amazing: this isn't a pub with a couple of boardgames you can play, it's not a MtG place with a copy of 7 Wonders, it is a board game cafe. There are a huge number of games a a large variety too. In addition, the "gurus" are super helpful: they will help you pick some games depending on what sort of thing you want to play and will also quickly teach you how to get up and running. There are a couple of negatives though. Firstly, it's basically always full at busy times (weekends), so booking is a necessity. Second, it is pretty expensive: £5/head per three hours of play, increasing to £7 if you don't buy any drinks. Speaking of the drinks, the selection is decent (many tasty hot drinks, soft drinks and a great selection of craft beers in cans, bottles and on draught) but the prices are unexceptional in either direction (£4.50 for a pint of normal ale). Overall, a great if somewhat pricy experience.
J. H.
Excellent selection of games with helpful and knowledgeable staff on hand if you need help. A great way of trying new games and playing lighter games with friends. Tends to be a bit too busy and noisy for playing longer, more complicated games though.
L. B.
Excellent collection of games to play and buy! Slow food and drink service though, waited half an hour for 2 drinks and cakes.
G. P.
Great place. I go regularly and would recommend it to anyone.
If you are new to board gaming you might find that their Open Gaming night on Tuesday suits you - they are all a bunch of lovely people. I have found that their Monday night Netrunner night gives me my fix now but I can recommend the atmosphere on any date or night.
C. B.
A great place for boardgame enthusiasts! Very knowledgeable staff who will match you and your group up with the right game and then show you how to play it. Highly recommended - also strongly recommend booking in advance.
M. H.
Fantastic board game café with enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly staff, a great selection of hot drinks, cold drinks and food. Fantastic selection of games to play and buy and always a great atmosphere, never too loud but always lively.
D. P.
A credit to Oxford's burgeoning café scene - this one comes with a twist! Thirsty Meeples is one of the UK's few stellar boardgame cafés. 'Drink, eat, play' goes the tagline...
Once seated (definitely worth reserving a table well in advance - this place is constantly rammed), the knowledgeable and endlessly helpful staff will take a food and drink order. At this point, your waiter (game guru) will also ask what sort of game you'd like to play. Based on your response, the guru will disappear off to gather a selection of games to offer. After a brief rundown, a selection can be made, at which point the staff will then give you a quick breakdown of how to play the game, and away you go!
Each table reservation is for three hours, and is priced at an absolute steal of £6.00 per head (£5.00 if you order anything from the menu).
With a game library that runs to the hundreds (thousands?), the staff all show fantastic knowledge of their products and are always cheerful and willing to lend their expertise. Their is also a well stocked library of games for purchase - so if you play something you really enjoy, you can grab a copy and take it home with you!
D.
Awesome place! There are thousands of games here and all the staff know how to play all of them, so they help you get started. There's a bar, snacks, great service and awesome games.
R. C.
Awesome place, will definitely be coming here again with my housemates. The guys working there were super helpful and friendly, there's a massive library of games to play, the coffee was delicious and I really loved the music they were playing. Perfect hangout spot 🏅⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
B. J.
My friends and I absolutely love this place! The staff are great and really know their stuff when it comes to board games. They have a good large selection of board games to try.
L. N.
Brilliant experience. The manager on duty, a handsome young man by the name of Simon was an absolute delight and his games guru was extremely informative in teaching me and my friend three games in three hours. Great coffee.
D. H.
Every board game you've ever played, and about a thousand that you haven't. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, not at all intimidating for the first or one hundredth timer. Just make sure you book or get there early (just don't camp on their doorstep).
J. M.
Thirsty Meeples is an amazing concept -- a board game café with great food, an incomprehensibly large number of board games and knowledgeable staff. You pay a fee for the use of a table, and then (with your friends) play whatever you want from their large collections -- they have some esoteric as well as familiar options. It's very easy to spend a whole afternoon here, and have a lot of fun. Booking is recommended (and often required during the university term)
O. T.
A great Boardgame café with a massive selection of boardgames and a lot of drink options, both alcoholic and otherwise. The staff was friendly and really helpful. We had a wonderful time here and I highly recommend it.
C. G.
I was really impressed. Cozy atmosphere. Vast array of games of all types and knowledgeable staff who help you choose and get up and running on unfamiliar games.
All against a backdrop of good value craft beer and barrista coffee.
P. F.
There are a team of experienced and passionate staff that always make this a wonderful experience. It's not all Monopoly and Risk, they can recommend lots of new types of games and teach you how to play. Recommended very highly!
D. H.
great place if you've got a fraction of geek personality you want to explore! wall to wall board and card games, great snacks and good beer and tea selection. great option, highly recommended, book in advance :)
f. d.
staff was really helpful, had a lot of fun and bought the boardgame i was recommended straight after.
P. A.
Terrible customer service for online shop. Won't respond to emails relating to an online order for the new Dune board game (over a period of two months). I suspect it is because they took too many pre-orders and can't fulfil mine. But they could at least tell me this themselves or let me know the real reason.
HOWEVER... review changed to four stars from one, as it turned up in the end and is fantastic.
D. C.
Lovely atmosphere, kind, knowledgeable staff. Loads of games. The staff are even willing to take time to help you choose and learn a game. Will definitely come back.
S. L.
Great fun! The staff know exactly what they're doing, there's plenty of food and drink to choose from and the atmosphere is great! Just be sure to book ahead if you want to go on a weekend evening.
P. B.
The first, and best, board game cafe in the UK.
The best staff, the best eats and drinks, the best games (well, literally all of them).
Spiritual home of my own business too, this place is amazing,
K. H.
A board game cafe, was soo much fun. Went here with my partner for our 3 hours and thought we would leave early, that didnt happen was soo much fun. The team really know what they are on about and teach you to play all the different games. Will be mentioning this to anyone who likes boardgames.
J. M.
Came here with a couple of friends the other day. Loved it! We booked a table in advance and stayed the for the 3 hours and had a great time. Staff were friendly and very helpful and they had a great selection of beers! Will be returning for sure!
A. G.
Strictly a web order review. I ordered the game, it arrived when promised. Packaging was decent, the delivery box had a dent, probably dropped in delivery, but the game was in mint condition.
Can't say much more than that.
A. H.
My favourite place in Oxford!! Excellent games to play and buy with great recommendation / instructions from helpful staff! Also they serve a great selection of drinks including ales and they have excellent sandwiches!! Highly recommended!!
E. S.
Best place to have some fun and some nice drinks. When we're bored it's always one of the best ideas we can choose from to go, to do. Amazing that these guys know all those games by heart.
D. C.
Good stock of games and very good prices, a lot of things are way cheaper than even Amazon! It can get very busy if you want to sit in and play, but for shopping its always a pain free experience.
R. A.
My first visit. Atmosphere is exactly what I want. Welcoming and energetic. People advocating for this great hobby of ours. Huge selection of games to play and teachers on site. Love it.
J. H.
This place Is great fun, you need to book in advance. The staff ask your game interests then find and teach you games that they think you might like, I descoverd many new board games.
L. D.
Great library of games. The staff are also great hosts, capable of explaining games very well. Perfect place to hang out with friends or family.
F. E.
There is a hyper-wide selection of board games, and the prices are affordable (still pricey at times tho). I absolutely loved the time I spent here with my family. I absolutely suggest it!
S. M.
The reserved signs on the table just mean you have to reserve it at the front desk instead of going to sit immediately, staff enthusiastically explained games, the cocktails were great, I just wish it was open a little later
E. T.
An amazing place. Tones of games with great and knowledgable staff to help you understand and play. This is a go to date night and friendly outing location
M. A. R.
Excellent food, good selection of board games, and attentive staff!
B. N.
A wonderful place to while away some time. The staff are great in recommending games and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is a great place for any age!
o. s.
Great place to spend a few hours playing games and eating good fresh food. Staff were very helpful and knowledge on the vast array of games available allowing us to get gaming straight away.
M. k.
Really friendly staff - always helpful in picking a board game to suit your party, plus they explain the rules to speed things up!
Great selection of board games and food as well!!
R. W.
What a great place. Staff, games and food all topnotch. So nice to spend some quality time with the and to come home with a brand new board game.
T. N.
Great place to spend a wet afternoon with friends. Thousands of games and a great selection of cakes, coffees and beers. Make sure to book if you want a table on a weekend though.
J. A.
This place is always so good friendly staff amazing games and good food!
R. W.
Great little gem of a shop in the heart of Oxford. Received excellent and attentive advice whilst visiting on holiday. Left with a great selection of travel friendly family games.
R. B.
This place is simply outstanding. On top of the great selection of games, the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and the beer selection is surprisingly awesome. Sometimes, they are the only place in Oxford with the beers that they carry.
T. K.
My favourite board game cafe, and it has really reasonably priced games too! Staff are super friendly and helpful when it comes to deciding on a game and learning the rules.
J. H.
Staff were so friendly and helpful, sat with you to introduce to their recommended games and were always on hand to help with any questions. Delicious food and drink! Highly recommended.
C. D.
Great place to play many many different games. You can choose games yourself or just ask one of the game gurus who will offer your some games to your liking to choose from.
Very nice people and the prices are fair.
K. d. K.
Very friendly staff who sat down with us to introduce the games at the beginning and helped us out whenever we needed it throughout the game to settle disputes! Very economical and a great way to spend several hours, they fly by!!
L. H.
Excellent selection of board games, tasty sandwiches and the staff are very knowledgeable. However, it is pretty expensive once you include the cover charge so this is an occasional treat!
Y.
Excellent service, even when they're busy, excellent Board Games and super friendly. Always a fantastic time.
M. C.
They've got fun board games and the chocolate milkshake is nice but a bit expensive and only really cost effective if you play many shorter quick to learn games rather than playing one long game as it would be about the same cost to just play the one game at your own home with your friends and split the cost to buy it yourself
A. K.
A great place to spend an afternoon - huge choice of games with really friendly staff to help you chose and a nice atmosphere. Great to have the choice of cakes/coffees/beers etc
K. S.
Great concept, friendly helpful staff (who are clearly knowledgeable about a ridiculous amount of games). Our whole family enjoys what is now our traditional yearly visit (we don't live locally)
T. H.
Huge number of board games to play. Helpful staff. Food selection is a bit lacking.
T. S.
Massive selection of board games and very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Decent selection of hot drinks, alcoholic drinks and snacks if a little overpriced but given the very reasonable cover charge, I feel this is excusable.
P. S.
You would think this would be dull... Really isn't though. Always busy great range of beers and try to do a range of food.
Could be worth expanding in to larger premises however because it is that busy.
And I would suggest increased range of free from foods such as gluten free and dairy free.
T. P.
Very good Idea. This place is just brilliant. Games, games, games. Good selection of beers, coffees and teas. Stuff explains and guides you through the games. Very knowledgeable and patient.
V. J.
One of the coolest places in Ox. Its so busy, that you have to book your slot here. But then with your friends, you can play plenty of board games and staff will help you with the basic rules.
H. 2.
Sounds like we had a similar experience to Jonathan Rios - loved the fact there was an infinite choice of games and the staff are certainly very knowledgeable but I found two of them (1 male, 1 female) to be very rude and patronising so it has completely put me off from going again. Such a shame.
R. J.
Pricey food, and a limited range, but very good, and part of the deal of the place-- you get helped with trying a new game or two. Book a table, it fills easily.
A. G.
Amazing go to this place, great family experience my family is now obsessed with board games the staff always greet you with a smile and the food and drinks is great I would 100% recommend this place I’ve become regular and they’ve started to remember me
C. C.
Placed online order yesterday @11.13am. Paid £4.50 for shipped next day delivery based on the following statement from their website
"The TRACKED 24 service is next WORKING day (provided you order before 1pm). Please note next working day delivery does not include Sunday, Bank Holidays, Public Holidays and Substitue days (see the GOV UK website for clarification).
All of Thirsty Meeples webstore orders are packed and shipped from our warehouse. If an order includes an item that is only available in our café shop (typically because because it our last copy) then an order is likely to be delayed by 24 hours while we retreive the game. If this effects your order we will notify you via email to confirm."
After receiving an email today with a tracking number for royal mail that stated items have been created but still to be picked up from agent, I called the number on the email.
I informed the person on phone of query and asked why I hadn't been informed of delay and asked why is paid and addition £4.50. I was informed that the number was cafe and it was with the warehouse. I asked for a number to contact the warehouse and was told in short no, I was to wait for them to contact me. In short I have paid for a service that hasn't been given and worse a refusal to communicate as apparently, the cafe and warehouse of the business have no way to communicate. Although the person on phone was attentive a lack of solution was frustrating along with refusal to allow me to communicate with those who could resolve or answer my query.
WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND AS AN ONLINE SERVICE.
S. B.
Ordered some games from these guys and they turned up within a couple of days. Cheaper than most others around and stocked items that others were out of stock on. Definitely use them again.
T. Y.
Thirsty Meeples is one of my favourite hangouts, and I go there roughly once a week.
The service can be slow when it's busy, but when each staff member needs to be a combination of waitperson, barista, librarian and personal tutor, the delays are unavoidable.
J. L.
Great drinks, great atmosphere and the staff were so helpful!!
Will definitely be returning soon.
C. T.
Very friendly staff at this excellent board games cafe. They have sooo many games and the staff are very helpful in helping you get started.
H. B.
The best kind of Cafe I have ever been too. I love the idea of being able to sit their with my Brothers and play board games:).
L. K.
Awesome place to take teenage kids! The staff are excellent. They really help you enjoy your time there and come across genuine. You can actually genuinely relax there.
R. G.
Thirsty Meeples is why Google needs to add a 6th star. Everything is perfect except they could do with cooling the room slightly better. Everything. The staff, the games, the location, the food and drink - all brilliant.
I. G.
I like this place. Staff are very friendly and they have a great selection of games. Never tried the food, so can't commend on this.

E. R.
Amazing service. They will pick new games for you to try out and even explain the rules.Great food and drink.Lovely family afternoon.Make sure to book and try and get in early so it isn’t so busy .
S.
Loads of variety. Staff give quick rundowns of games, but can go in depth with any of the games. can find a game to fit how ever much time you have left.
m.
Amazing selection of old and new games, and suspiciously telepathic staff who can work out something you'd like to play from about four words and a confused look. Food and drink is great too!
T. V. O. Y.
Loved our evening here
G. a.

B. C.
Truly great supply of games to both 'rent' while you visit and also to buy, some knowledgeable, friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere.
K. H.
