Reviews of Vaults & Garden
M. N.
This is a fantastic cafe and bistro. A great place to get an afternoon snack or lunch. Interesting history too! Gets very crowded. Tons of outdoors seating assuming it’s warmer though. Definitely check this place out!!
D. D.
Very nice cafe/bistro with changing lunch specials menu. The food is great (and fair price), service is great, sweets and teas are great. Seating inside in a vaulted great hall, or outside, with views to the Radcliffe Camera in central Oxford.
Expect some queues if trying to get lunch when most students are also there, but service is usually quite quick.
E. P.
great lunch. a professor i met at the communal tables said he has been coming here for 30 years, i now know why. apple custard was pretty great too. 1 star off cos toilets werent disability friendly as you need to go up stairs and down stairs.

I hadn't planned my breakfast itinerary for Oxford when I left on the train out of Paddington. Doing a bit of research on the way led me to Vaults & Garden, with its mouth-watering, traditional breakfast menu. I'm very glad I elected to eat here.
Whether you choose to dine outdoors with the lovely view of St. Mary the Virgin Church, or inside the Congregation House (built in the 1320s) for some historical immersion, you're sure to have an excellent dining experience.
My Vegetarian Breakfast order landed arrived piping hot and fresh from the kitchen. The protein-packed medley included FAI organic eggs (served scrambled, much to the nostalgia of my American palate), dark spinach cooked to wilting steaminess, juicy-ripe tomato, large cuts of sauteed mushrooms, savory-sweet beans, and crispy-browned toast. Best enjoyed with small bites of each food, in no particular order, I left satisfied and energized for the long day of tourism ahead. I only wish I had gone back to try their lunch menu!
If you're planning to visit the Bodleian Library, Oxford University, or St. Mary's Cathedral, this is a delicious, affordable option. The food will satisfy your stomach and the breath-taking views will nourish your soul.
Y. E.
Gorgeous setup an atmosphere! A conversion inside an old church right behind the Radcliffe Camera. The staff are some of the friendliest people I’ve met and the food is great! Try the Oxford rarebit
M. L.
The scone was decent, cream and tea were fantastic, but the jam was very poor. They had 3 homemade flavors and I had the raspberry, and it really was like water with floating seeds and chunks. It had zero flavor and terrible texture. A scone with cream and jam was really expensive and the jam was very disappointing. The tea was great, workers were very patient and friendly, and building was beautiful.
D. S.
Lovely café at the centre of Oxford with an absolutely unique view and experience. Food was good. Price was decent. I would totally go again for that heck of a view. Laptops not allowed from 12-2. Warm service to top it all too :)
C. G.
A good place to have lunch. Decent prices. The Expresso coffee is lacking the taste and strength. The cleaning can bee strongly improve
J. W.
Fabulous! What a find. We stumbled across this cafe after we had climbed the tower. The food was amazing. The cafe was very busy and we almost left but it smelled so good we decided to give it a try. Don’t be put off by the school looking serving containers. The stew and the curry were the best we have had in a very long time. Good sized portions, friendly staff and a fair price. We will be back! Bravo Vaults and Garden Cafe. Such a treat to find such a great place :)
T. w.
Really pleased with food and service at Vaults Cafe. Unfortunately weather wasn’t great when I went but it’s a must visit when in Oxford - lots of gluten free option and food was really good.
C. E.
2nd visit confirmed the first impressions. Good food, good coffee and a staff who work hard to ensure you are served in minimal time, even when the line is out the door.
M. T.
Standard canteen style food: decent and reasonably filling, but definitely overpriced. Queue was also very long and slow, despite the canteen style serving.
M. L.
Good value hot lunches and ready to eat rarebit on sourdough. Fantastic cakes including vegan, I particularly enjoyed the lemon and pineapple cake. Seating inside the vault and outside on some benches in the courtyard garden. Toilet facilities available.
J. H.
I must have eaten 100s of full English breakfasts in my time. Even thousands! The Vaults full Oxford breakfast is the BEST I've ever had. Each component beautifully individually cooked and seasoned. Full of flavour. I even ate the sweet slow roasted tomato. Great mushrooms, scrambled eggs, butter beans in tomato sauce, bacon, sausage and toast.
M. A.
Lovely food and quick service. Nice and clean. Would recommend to all.
N. O.
Excellent quality ingredients. Well prepared food. Good size portions. Lovely casual friendly environment. Efficient friendly staff. If you like Lentil As Anything in Sydney or Melbourne, or Souen in NYC, it has a different menu but perhaps a similar ethos - excellent food at a very good price point, in a casual friendly environment.
M. S.
Really lovely little gem with an amazing location. It is a second time I visited and I am not disappointed. Very nice Oxford cheese rarebit with soup and delicious jasmin tea this time was a really nice lunch but they also serve delicious cakes and pastries. Lovely stuff, really nice view outside. I am sure I will be coming back.
M.
Yummy food and quality scones. Good coffee, but nothing special. The staff is kind and handles the busy hours well.
What is truly unique is the location, although it tends to get very busy leaving little available spots.
A. D.
Nice cafe in an excellent location with pretty garden, but if you don't get place in it, you can sit with the view of Radcliffe camera instead.
My friend admitted that he had one of best English breakfasts here.
J. P.
Good outdoor seating. The Mexican beef dish is tasty, but slightly expensive.
T.
Great whether you are seated inside or out. Extraordinary experience to drink tea in a room dating back to 1320. Sit at an outside table and you have a fantastic view of the Radcliffe Camera and Quad. Excellent fruit scones.
P. A.
Usually, I really enjoy being in this place and I rate it usually with 5 stars. But today I had such a bad pot of fresh lemon&ginger tea. The guy filled about half of the pot with lemons - far too sour - and just a bit of ginger - far from balanced. Instructing staff would help, he was a very friendly guy.
J. G.
Always enjoy a coffee here before a Sunday coffee concert. Serving system a bit slow and chaotic, it's a popular place with plenty of seating inside and out. The food looks good and it has a lovely vibe.
M. I.
Beautiful location, quick and efficient, great menu - interesting, considered, varied.
Food first rate - made with care, had an interesting spring vegetable rarebit and a basque chicken dish.
Staff friendly and efficient.
C. C.
Enjoyed a fabulous traditional cream tea, served by really friendly & helpful staff, in an iconic location... :) Totally recommend it! Have lived in for many years and not been here before... I've real been missing out!
O. J.
Unbeatable views, delicious food and fantastic service - all at a very reasonable price! The menu is ever changing but whatever you go for, it will always be cooked to perfection and full of flavour. An absolute gem in the city centre, Vaults and Garden is my favourite spot for lunch in Oxford.
M. L.
Phenomenal breakfast and very large portions. Went a few times while staying in Oxford. The staff was very kind and attentive. Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!
S. B.
Amazing café, never wanted to leave! Amazing tea selection, great scones, and perfect view of Radcliffe camera. Even though there was a lot of people it didn't get noisy or annoying.
J. G.
Went again yesterday, good as ever.
I like the rarebit, with salad options.
Architecture of the place means staircase and loos are tight on space; try to avoid taking your backpacks etc please !
T. P.
Do exceptionally delicious vegan take-out. 😋
Had a dish from them that included a wide sweep of flavours - was a massively enjoyable Friday treat and went down well. Hours later I still feel good from it.
Included a wee Ferrero Rocher-style vegan chocolate with it too, which finished it off well. 🍫
Oh, and one more thing: the take-out boxes. 📦
Rather than being run of the mill plastic tubs, these ones were cardboard, including a circular one for the main dish. Far better than tacky plastic and better for the planet. 🌎
Overall: popular and rightly so.
D. N.
A beautiful cafe in Oxford University grounds. The garden terrace has a spectacular 180 degrees view of the historical architecture that made Oxford the epitome of tertiary education. The food is regular canteen food but made to the highest quality. Although the selection is rather limited, it has enough choices to please different palates. We ordered two vegan choices and a lamb stew. They tasted awesome !
A. B.
Good place, dined in with the dog outside with the view on the library
T. F. K.
The Vaults and Garden is a very nice cafe inside the premises of the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Oxford.
The food selection and the variety on coffees really is sufficient. The atmosphere in this old vault is vivid in a positive way, it is a pretty busy place indeed. You might face some waiting time but usually people come in and leave in shorter periods of time ... it is well worth the little wait.
S.
What a nice and peaceful place to have afternoon tea. Excellent service and perfect coffee!
J. G.
Centrally-located cafe with nice views of the Radcliffe Camera and surrounding buildings. The coffee is generally good, with tasty snacks and delicious sandwiches. Service can be inconsistent, but is generally good.
S. M.
Love the breakfast options come here all the time .... Meh on the espresso. But the view is unbeatable If you sit out in the garden
r. M.
Very pleasant place to sit for a while as the church bell chimes 10am.
The breakfast was fine but I was hoping for a larger amount and spinach as advertised. It is in the historical center so I guess £9.50 is OK for the small portion with a fabulous view.
The staff are very welcoming and friendly.
D. V.
One of my ultimate favourite location in Oxford :)!! I got the goats cheese dish and it was executive!! I have been here three times now and every-time I have no complaints :) I love how everyday they have different dish and they add salad and pasta on the side that makes the dish very filling but also very good for the price :)!! One advice will be if we can have more quantity for coffee for small size could be better :) Implementing student discount could make the place even better :) Will definitely come again.
A. P.
Delightful nook nestled between All Souls, University Church, and the Rad Cam. Recommend garden seating whenever weather allows, and weekdays when the crowds are thinner.
J. G.
Lovely healthy food but upset to be charged £4.10 for a scone & butter! Only 50p less than to have jam & cream! Really?
J. O.
Nice little cafe in Oxford with healthy food options, hot and cold and a variety of tasty pastries abs cakes.
I had the carrot and leek soup and that was perfect for a rainy cold day plus it was very tasty too. Prices are decent and good value. Decent covid safe measures. Polite staff.
Loved it. I imagine it would be so lovely in the summer.
T. C.
Lovely visit on a warm autumnal Sunday morning for breakfast. Accommodating of allergen requirements and great location in the heart of the city.
E. K.
Location is superb, nice views, food and coffee was good. Only downside was that when we were there they had a really good system of ordering and paying through the QR codes placed on the tables but they seemed to stop using it - we placed our order like this and staff seemed confused how that order came in and they ripped the QR code sticker off our table.
J. W.
Cakes to eat in or go. Well worth every Google star it has. Sadly was stuffed full of cake already but the place was heaving with happy punters.
E. M. C.
Excellent scones. You have to go to the counter to order and get food. Prices are very low. Location is ok.

Hidden secrets of Oxford.
Away from bustling streets of Oxford is this little lovely place. Really busy and will have to wait few minutes to get a seating.
Great food and unexpected yummy tasty.
Really enjoyed and recommend to anyone.
S.
Really busy so a long queue but food/drink was of a good standard and the venue is iconic so worth the wait.
G. F.
Great place to have brunch or lunch in Oxford.
Nice and fresh food.
Very nice staff also.
Excellent position
G. P.
We were recommended to try the scones as being "the best in Oxford". The scone itself was lovely, however it was served with "strawberry jam" which was a runny liquid like a sauce. The clotted cream had the consistency of cream cheese but definitely didn't taste like clotted cream. We had lattes and they were lovely. Our disappointment in the experience peaked when I visited the gents toilet which was a disgrace for an establishment like this. No hand washing and it looked like the basin had been broken for a while. There was toilet paper everywhere and it was a general mess.
T.
Only called in for coffee and cake. Both very good. Service friendly and efficient. Small menu of main meals which all seemed to be "home-cooked" and looked very good. Good atmosphere - mix of locals; students; and tourists / visitors.
G. T.
The Sourdough bread with salad is the perfect combination! A place with both beautiful outside and inside sitting area
B. R.
Cafe in St Mary the Virgin Church. Wide variety of food/meals available. Plenty of choice of drinks including alcohol. Great setting!
I would have liked my Welsh Rarebit to have been freshly made rather than pre-made then just warmed up! One slice plus a tiny amount of lettuce & coleslaw was over-priced at £7!
G.
Stopped off for lunch, I liked the small menu with a good range of choices.
The lunch was good value for money and delicious.
The only complaint would be that the food could of been hotter.
Apart from that, highly recommended
A. C.
An extremely unique dining experience in this medieval church annex. Homemade and healthful food, a good latte, and wonderful scones would continue to bring me back.
O. R.
The best part of the Vaults and Garden is it's prime location right in front of the iconic Radcliffe Camera. It has a nice outdoor sitting area which can is really pleasant to sit in and have a coffee on a nice and sunny day. The food/drink is relatively on the pricier end and it's quality is so-so (can be quite variable from day to day). The staff are very friendly and the premises are clean.
D. H.
Cosy and unique setting..Nice tea room with some simple savoury dishes..slightly confusing under Afternoon Tea where there's cream tea offered..£4.50 (scone cream and jam), to then be told you have to purchase tea separately...however it was all tasty with vibrant young staff serving!
C. L.
Nice enough experience, nice cake and friendly enough staff. Location is nice as well in the medieval vaults.
A. M.
Lovely hot food selection. Unique setting and atmosphere. It does get busy, and is quite small - best for parties of 4 people or fewer. Also, I am Coeliac and most of their mains are designated gluten free. Have been back here numerous times.
V. D.
Ate my lunch here when i visited Oxford for the first time as suggested by our tour guide. The place and food didn’t disappoint! I will be back ❤️
T. H.
Stunning setting surrounded by historic buildings. Seating inside and outside in the church garden. Fabulous eclectic food. Breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake. Reasonable price.
D. M. (.
Super friendly staff, few food option but they are all very good! Affordable and nice decoration. Scones are super good and the bed stroganoff too!
S. S.
Wonderful place for lunch / drinks / coffee. We sat outside with a stunning view of the Ratcliffe Camera building. Inside is super cool too. Would recommend.
L. R.
great service the brekfast was delicious congratulations on my next trip to oxford i will definitely be back thanks!
J. S.
Stunning location- centuries old, and the food and service is brilliant. I unfortunately had an accident with a stranger who got visibly upset when he turned back into my plate and ended up dirtying his coat sleeve. He proceeded the hurl obscenities for the next few minutes even though I apologised multiple times.
The wait staff attended to him but also to me telling me it was just an accident and not my fault. As a stranger in a new place a little assurance was one of the kindest things they could have done in an awkward position. Would definitely come back.
O. S.
Historical location can be felt to the bones. Has very good varying Vegan selections. Sustainability is valued. Excellent staff.
J. A.
Beautiful place to share delicious scones with a cup of tea or coffee! The homemade jams are good and the butter/cream have an amazing texture and flavor! I will come back!
R. S.
That is a beautiful cafe with a great selection of various teas and desserts 🧁 My personal recommendation: house blend tea 🫖 and a scone with the raspberry jam 🥯
R. I.
Very nice cafe. Always good food, kind staff, and an academic cosy atmosphere. Thanks !
J. V.
Very slow queue.. too busy and short staffed
A bit messy and hot.
Food is ok.
J. C.
Caesar Salad was nothing like a Caesar Salad. No Romaine or croutons, included apple, pomegranate and carrot and a salad dressing plus a Caesar dressing. Very disappointing.
J. D.
We had an excellent breakfast with great service and friendly staff in a very historic setting.
The scrambled egg on sourdough toast was great as was the home made potato and leak soup and the Oxford Rarebit with a salad.
The coffee is also first class.
I. M.
Met friends for coffee and croissant. Great location, reasonable prices. Will come again.
W. E.
The view from sitting outside opposite the Radcliffe Camera and beneath the tower of the University Church is priceless. Inside is an historic vault which is usually busy and noisy. The food is a bit overpriced but tends to be organic and locally sourced. I usually go for the soup at lunchtime. There is free WiFi but not allowed over lunchtime.
J. H.
Decent quality for the price. A great place for brunch.
R. L.
Fantastic place to have tea and coffee in a stunning area. Right in the middle of Oxford, but it feels like another world. A good selection of teas as well as good scones and various jams. I highly recommend!
M. A.
Passable scones but those rating them "best ever" haven't had great scones. That said the ambiance is excellent.
L. J.
Delicious vegetarian British breakfast with an amazing view from its terrace, tasty coffee and cake too. Would go back anytime!
J. B.
Beautiful location, average food, come here to sit outside for a beautiful view of the Radcam, Rarebit was dry and bready, made with good ingredients however, toast and butter cold and soup average
S. O.
There was live music and that view to the Radcliffe Camera, just a gorgeous churchyard ...
S.
Excellent place. Breakfasts are great as well as scones at tea time. Portions are big. Here's a photo of my breakfast. Also, place has a lot of history.
R. A.
Lovely scones and coffee, lovely interior and a nice outdoor area for when the weather is nice. Great for a quick break during a day of sightseeing.
B. S.
Nice ambience in a historical church..very friendly staff and very decent food! Though the portion sizes are a bit small. Location cannot be better, surrounded by historical buildings.
Y.
Lovely setting and good breakfast - but be prepared to have bees buzzing around you while you’re trying to munch!
L. D.
I am a very small woman by any standard but the portions here are just too small — even for me. I would have to order two mains to not go hungry. This is unfortunate, as the cafe is rather quaint and the food nice
E.
Amazing food just like I'd make myself at home. Quick service too. Thank you!
S. G.
Their scones are nice. Vegan chocolate cake and coffee were mediocre. This place is right in front of the Radcliffe Camera, so be prepared for a queue. Also, they run out of some of the popular items fast.
L. T.
Fab place for a quick, but substantial and home made lunch. Not the cheapest, but def worth it.
V. J.
Quite a different eatery set in a side chapel of St Mary's church in the heart of Oxford. I would visit at least once for the experience. Great choice of healthy brunch / lunch menu.
S. H.
Gorgeous dining room, it can get crowded but the food is worth it. Had it 4 years ago and again this week and both times it was exceptional. Highly recommend if you are visiting Oxford.
M. K.
I simply adore this cafe, maybe the best in oxford.. Great view and atmosphere and good quality food
R. C.
Very tasty food in a beautiful part of Oxford. Soak in the noise of the surroundings and enjoy.
C. F.
A quiet spot for lunch or tea. A bit of a queue but excellent scones.
L. H.
A find of a place tucked opposite the Radcliffe Camera. The Werebit is a must for lunch and it was a delight to find pure hibiscus tea!
L. V.
Nice place to have breakfast, coffee is good and the Food is also tasty, People are very nice and it is Not to expensive.
R. G.
Best scrambled eggs and coffee in Oxford.
Worth a visit.
C. W.
Excellent food. Busy and a little chaotic but very much as I expected.
b. s.
Good food, good vibes surrounding by classical building. Staffs were very helpful for tourist
M.
Best spot in Oxford to have a cup of coffee. The view from the garden is magnificent, coffee is great too!
M. M.
Nice little cafe. Friendly staff.
A. C. C.
Lovely place for an afternoon tea, in a great location. Nice staff.
M. M.
Awesome place! The best breakfasts in Oxford!
L. M.
Wasn't sure what to expect here given its a restaurant in the crypt of a 1000 year old church. If you've been to an office cafeteria you'll be familiar with the way food is served from metal trays. This sort of concerned me but the quality was excellent. Given it was a lovely sunny day we ate in the gardens outside which were alongside the church. The staff were very helpful. Especially when I struggled with the trays and the helped me carry them out.
J. K.
Cosy and delicious small Student's pub like cafe-restaurant. Not a big variety of food but that's not needed. It has a nice atmosphere and reminds of my uni times.
P. S.
Love the atmosphere, coffee, ☕ and outside dining area.
G. S.
No syrups for the lattes and very busy (to be expected in a tourist spot though). However, coffee and orange lavender baked good was nice, and a decent amount of tea selections to be found
B. J.
Stopped for a spot of lunch here, we sat outside, food was tasty, lovely surroundings
F. H.
Very nice & great experience with a stunning view and service!
A. U.
Canteen-like/student place, reasonably priced for the location. Food was decent (except our rice was stale and the cake a bit bland and disappointing.. but pumpkin soup was lovely in cold gloomy weather).
C. B.
Always loved this spot for tea and scones. Friendly staff, local hustle and bustle vibes, and great food.
Just don't use the toilets.... probably the worst in England.
A. R.
You don't need a booking for the café. Just walk in and they'll find you a table. I went there on Saturday for breakfast and Bank holiday Monday for lunch. Both times service was quick and friendly. Very clean. Great view of the Radcliffe camera and university wherever you sit. Will definitely visit again.
G. M.
Really good food. Beef bourgeois was very tasty and a large portion. Very nice outdoor seating in Radcliff Square.
D. P.
Delicious piping hot vegetarian soup with fresh sourdough bread. Lovely ambiance.
O. K. S.
Authentic place with quality food. Best bread I ate for a long time! It was just delicious with the salty butter.
C. D.
The manager here- I think his name is Will- he's incredibly hard working and nice. I hope to be like him when I'm older. The food was also spectacular, with a great view of the Radcliffe Camera
P. L.
Good food, million dollar setting
A. F.
Good toasts and nice coffee in a relatively quiet garden in the middle of all the Oxford city center. Usually they have vegan cakes and lunch options. Great place to sit when it's nice outside.
B. L.
Delicious food, great atmosphere and friendly staff with the best view of the Radcliffe camera!
T. K.
Lovely atmosphere and lovely view outside. The decoration is lovely and quaint. They serve the best cream tea ever. Lovely hot and fresh scones with homemade marmalade and lots of cream. I went there 3, 4 times during the weekend I was in Oxford. The food is also lovely.
T. H.
Interesting and pleasant location, serving good quality and tasty food and drink.
C. G.
Could not have a prettier location, 100% agree with all those who say this. But for me, the choice of food was quite limited and a bit over priced. We had the oxford rarebit with salad, It was tasty but we did leave a little hungry. This was intended to be our main meal of the day but we did end up at a pizza place a few hours later!
c. k.
Amazing establishment great value with a dream setting very special experience to sit in this location and enjoy a lunch, William the owner took care of my needs and advised me on what to opt for very good service and excellent value for money coming here is a must if in Oxford. I really enjoyed my experience.
C. V.
Lovely place to grab lunch during a study break. One of the friendliest staff around. The food leaves nothing to wish for. :)
J. G.
Great oat milk latte with a view of the Radcliffe Camera.
T. B.
Coffee, Scone and lunch is delicious ! The view is excellent
A. B.
Nice breakfast.
Wife and I stopped here for breakfast on Thursday morning and we were not disappointed. We were looking for something light and enjoyable.
I had the rarebit and it was done well. Just enough to give you something without filling you up. My wife did scrambled eggs and they were very light and fluffy.
All around great breakfast spot.
A. E.
A lovely and quiet corner with great food and a great environment! I highly recommend it and hope to be able to go back there again.
H. S.
Absolutely lovely place in all regards! I can never get enough of the food there. Just so tasty, fresh, home-made, organic, healthy. Great ambience both indoors and outdoors.
J. D.
Would highly recommend the scones! Only reason why I give 4/5 stars is the bad non-dairy milk. ONLY get it in iced drinks. they do not use emulsified ‘barista’ versions so the soya, almond, and oat will curdle in tea/coffee.
L. K.
Lovely breakfast and very kind staff 😊
C. W.
Lovely little cafe tucked away in the centre of Oxford. Offers a lovely selection of lunches and cakes. It is usually ridiculously busy, but recommend off-peak times to enjoy this place.
A. T.
Such a great place in Oxford! Good food, friendly staff and venue is so unique. You are having a meal in an old church. Go on top as well, the view is worth it. Great cakes too!
Q. T.
Very busy during lunch hour but the staff are polite and efficient. Ten pounds for a dish.
A. D.
Lovely place to sit and great view
k. v.
Magestic atmosphere, the feeling you're visiting a historic establishment while enjoying a great cuppa coffee or tea.
C. H.
Great place to enjoy lunch on a rainy Friday in Oxford. The church makes an impressive visit which can be topped off with a visit to the café. There's a variety of options including vegan and vegetarian plus great coffee and drinks.
A. L.
Had great scones, cream & jam with a large pot of tea in a lovely vaulted room. Friendly staff too so another great place to go back to!
A. C.
An excellent meal for lunch. The staff were efficient and polite. A mixture of dishes available for all tastes. Lovely lovely eating area outside with views of all the historic buildings of Oxford. Worth a visit.
B.
Arguably the best place for breakfast in Oxford amongst the 15 odd places we frequented. Best advice to come early before the crowds gather. Lovely outdoor section which we didn’t take advantage of due to it being winter.
Uniqueness of it being part of a church with beautiful vaulted ceiling. Coffee was good too. As well as the food of course. Memorable visit and will come again when in Oxford.
Staff behind the counter were solicitous and friendly.
G. M.
So much better than any chain café.
We had a few cakes and a scone to share between 4. Scones, amaze balls!
Free water in bottles and jugs with glasses. Everywhere should do free water.
Lovely staff
Lunch looked great. They had some big lamb dish, lovely rarebit, chicken curry, rice, potatoes, soup. All looks great.
Decent prices. Will Def return.
p. 1.
Decent service nice soup
Worth a stop
J. E.
Such a great little cafe, full of character inside and with such great and atmospheric outdoor seating. Food was really tasty and good value. We had the rarebit and soup and were well satisfied by the quality and portions. Coffee was also good.
There was a bit of a long queue and difficultly finding seating, but that was only because it was so busy of a Saturday lunch time. Off peak, I imagine service would be great.
I would definitely recommend a visit.
S. K.
Simply the best scones I've ever had. Usually I'm not too fond of scones, but my girlfriend got some and I tried them. Simply amazing. Next time I'm in the UK I'll go to oxford just for afternoon tea at this place.
Highly recommend!
l. p.
Really nice place to sit and relax with an excellent breakfast and delightful coffee in amazing surroundings.
Really worth stopping in for a look.

This was recommended to us by someone who knows Oxford very well as being the best caff in the city. We haven't tried them all, but she's probably right. Everything's fresh.
E. N.
Really liked this place. Great room and great atmosphere. Little bit cramped with seating packed in, which made it quite noisy around lunchtime, but a good choice of drinks and amazing looking food! Don't come with a pushchair unless it's warm enough to sit outside!
A. K.
Lovely setting in the heart of University Oxford. Food and coffee is eco friendly, pleasant atmosphere and staff
S. Z.
Great atmosphere, high quality of food, good vegan options
M. S.
A very nice place with a good breakfast!
O. P.
Lovely cozy cafe, however, it can get quite crowded and loud. I'd recommend it as a place to socialise rather than work.
M. c.
This England dish is so delicious and staffs are so polite.
w.
A great spot for coffee (and very good coffee at that!). A well used space that is often quite busy and also provides hearty horn lunches which are healthy and delicious. Good selection of loose leaf tea as well plus friendly helpful staff. Only has 4 stars as sometimes it's so popular it's hard to get in the door with wheelchairs although that is more of a structural building issue die to the beauty of the ancient building rather than by design.
We will be back to sample afternoon cups of tea and to inspect the cake!!
A. P.
A nice busy cafe that seems to be very popular with the students. They had a little buffet-style lunch available. It's very conveniently located right in front of the Radcliffe camera. FYI, the bathroom is very tiny so there isn't a lot of room to move around.
C.
loved the big and perfectly chocolatey cup of hot chocolate. full oxford breakfast also has no complaints. every item on the dish was so good. loved the beans particularly. my only remark -- wish there could be more spinach on the plate!
T. M.
One of my favourite places for tea in Oxford. The outdoor seating is beautiful when the weather holds up, with spectacular views of the Bodleian library and a lovely little garden. The food is pretty good, with great vegetarian options. The scones and coffee are nothing spectacular, but they hit the spot.
L. 1.
Terrific lunch. Home style food.
J. v. d. B. -. S.
It's a cozy café in the center of Oxford. Queue was long but fast. Food was good, yet a tad on the price. Also we had to eat outside because of the crowd, and we had to eat on graves, which is completely normal but very strange!
Also, we were rushed by an employee who kept asking if we were done, such a shame.
R. J.
Went here for breakfast on Sunday. On entering the restaurant you order at the counter. Selection of regular, vegetarian and vegan full Oxford breakfasts are available as well as toast, scrambled eggs and a number of cakes. I had the Oxford cheese rarebit which was very good. Restaurant is located in a church with combination of tables for 4 and longer communal tables. Guests vary from trendty tourists to locals reading their Sunday paper. Staff very friendly and food is prepared in sight. Groet location and authentic atmosphere.
D. S.
I visited 'Vaults & Garden' on a day trip to oxford . It was a particularly windy February day and I walked into this toasty cafe that was so welcoming and warm . I got a pot of loose leaf tea and the scones . The scones were fresh from the oven, served with a little spoon of fresh cream and strawberry preserve . The scones were firm on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside .a solutely delicious ! Great tea options , lovely staff and fantastic vibe !! Definitely recommend! :)
M. T.
An absolute gem! The staff is very friendly and incredibly nice, the place is lovely and they offer a delicious and healthy variety of food.
T.
Love it! Go every week for coffee and cake or breakfast. Always friendly staff and delicious food!
S. P.
Quirky venue, good food and drink, great atmosphere.
L. S. M.
Definitely not the cheapest cafe in oxford but it does kind of justify the expense by being really good. The kind of place where everything looks as nice as it tastes. Great central location right next to (and in) St Mary's church and a lot of seating - usually quite full at peak times though so you may have to fight for a table.
M. S. W.
A great cafe in an historic building. The food and the breakfast especially is superb. Staff are very polite and it’s just a lovely place to have breakfast and have a look at the papers. Perfect location near the Bodleian Library and all that Oxford has to offer.
R. A.
Stopped for tea and cake. Friendly staff, wonderful loose leaf, and tasty vegan options. Warm, welcoming, well good
T. C.
I live in Oxford and this is the place I take visiting friends to lunch. The food is creative and delicious - with lots of fresh, local, organic and seasonal ingredients, and it's in an amazing old building (with seats outside) in the most beautiful square in Oxford... It's reassuringly busy, but I've never failed to find a place to sit. Definitely check it out.
C. W.
A relaxing place where we enjoy the gorgeous view of Radcliffe Camera with a cup of nice coffee. The muffins there were good too. You always needed to line up for food there, as it was greatly mentioned in differently tourist guides, but the turnarounds of tables was normally quick.
B. B.
A little hidden gem. I've been to oxford so many times and this has been the second here and it's amazing like I said a hidden gem. The food is all homemade on site and tastes amazing! Thr menu changes most days I think with a different option everyday. Great homemade soups and cakes. Lovely friendly staff amd such a beautiful building which it is housed in. Has both seating inside and outside so perfect for the English weather. Does a incredible cream tea! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!!!
M. K.
The best scones in Oxford, always freshly baked... a perfect place for an afternoon tea!! Really nice setting, located in the heart of Oxford, plus a very nice outdoor garden sitting with views on the Radcliff Camera and All Souls College. Not great but OK as well for lunch.
A. L.
You can always guarantee something delicious will be on the menu here. I've breakfasted, brunched, lunched and coffee-ed here and it's always been delicious. Finding a seat can be tricky at peak times and the dash for a good seat in the garden in warmer months is quite a art-form. Good selection of teas and coffees too!
b. d.
Nice atmosphere, but a bit crowded and claustrophobic. The food - while sounding nice in the descriptions - was only mediocre, and very overpriced for what is essentially canteen fare. Maybe better for a quick coffee in the quieter times rather than lunch.
a. M.
Good canteen style food and cakes, although can be crowded and you'll usually need to queue. That's a reflection of it's popularity with locals and tourists. Not great if you're part of a large group as you'll be unlikely to get to sit together.
Z. T.
Delicious cakes you can tell were prepared with care. Had the chocolate fudge cake, orange lavender cake, and honey pecan nut cake.
Chocolate Fudge cake was rich and delicious. Orange lavender one was light and moist, without the flavours being too overpowering. Honey pecan cake was delicate and moist. Well worth the £10 I paid for the lot.
Will definitely come back again next time! Perhaps to try the cream tea, which many people seemed to be having.
J. L.
Friendly staffs and amazing spot to sit and chill while walking around the Oxford. However, the ice cream (probably the summer menu) is a bit dissapointment. I thought there would be a proper icecream menu as it was advertised outside, but it's just bit overpriced small icecream cup. Still, it's good place to sit and take a rest.
M. R.
Great place, excellent quality and delicious food and drinks, plus a very friendly service. Absolutely fantastic.
A. W.
Lovely little cafè you can eat inside or outside..with hot and cold food on the menu..I you eat outside you are surrounded by stunning historical buildings to admire while you eat..I would say it is worth a visit..
G. M.
I almost don't want to give the Vaults a good review because I want to keep it all for myself.
The food is always amazing and the staff as friendly as is possible!
Have been coming here every time I visit Oxford and it's never let me down. Sadly it's becoming more popular with the tourists, rather than the locals who used to populate it when I first discovered it's delights. But then my last visit was a sunny summer weekend.
K. G.
It's a very cute place. It gets very busy during summer or whenever the sun is out. Sitting outside is better than being inside as you can get a wonderful view of the Radcliffe Camera. The cakes, teas and coffees are all lovely.
J. D.
An unlikely cafe in one of Oxford's ancient church buildings. The food is plentiful, fresh, and well-prepared. On popular days, the wait can be quite long but the serving staff are pleasant. Seating inside the vault is limited and close. If the day is nice, try to grab one of the few tables in the garden outside.
L. N.
Gorgeous cakes and good coffee! The lunch menu looked very tempting too.
P. D.
With food allergies and sensitivities it’s so hard eating out but was pleasantly surprised that they were knowledgable about what was in everything. The meal option I could eat was out so they recommended another choice with different sides to fit my needs. Located in a lovely historic building as well.
N. M.
Fantastic spot for an English breakfast (traditional, vegan or veggie). Great selection of teas and coffee as well. Best part, tho, are the beautiful 500 year old ceilings. A must-do when in Oxford.
V. S.
The food was delicious and very traditional. A long waiting queue on the weekend went really fast, so don't worry much about it. Although variety of different options in the menu isn't stunning, all you can choose would be worth its reasonable price.
s. b.
Never let down by this enterprise. Great service today - the staff enduring the hustle and bustle of a very hot day! Quality of the food is defined in the tasting...delicious. A lovely setting with refectory atmosphere.
J. S.
Loved it. Lovely food - just a bit small and crowded. To be expected when it's so nice! It's always best to seek out these places instead of the usual touristy rubbish!
L. C.
Delicious afternoon tea
O. B.
This cafe has an interesting location in the vaults of the University church in Oxford. Coffee, food and cakes are good but quite expensive and this place is often very crowded and finding a seat can be tough. There is a large outdoor seating area in a garden overlooking Radcliffe Square and the Radcliffe Camera which is very pleasant in spring and summer.
A.
Scone was very nice with homemade jam. The Welsh rarebit could have been better with a bit more seasoning and served a bit hotter, but was nice. Lovely location with beautiful vaulted ceiling throughout.
V.
Lovely place inside the church, very busy on a Saturday and not a wide menu but fab cakes
P. K.
Cosy bistro in scenic surroundings! They have very complaisant and friendly staff. The lemon cake is really one of a kind and it's a very nice place for some work is.
The place is quite busy sometimes but the WIFI is quite fluent and stable. I can give you my recmendation!
C. Y.
Lovely food. Great atmosphere.
P. R.
Seating arrangement is good as they have outside arrangement. Food quality is good and the food is tasty.
M. P.
One of the worst breakfasts I have had. This and a cuppuchino came to £9.00, athough the person serving originally asked for £12. The toast was 3 pieces of tiny end of crusts, which they exchanged for something better. Since when do you serve butter beans in traditional English breakfast.?. Generally the food us very good but expensive. The cafe vault is an appealing place being part of St Marys Church but beware it's a small place so can get busy although in the summer there is some seating outside
H. L.
Delicious homemade salads and rarebit. Plenty of alternative milk choices. Friendly staff and lovely outdoor space.
H. H.
Nice dining environment and delicious food
M. Q.
The restaurant is located in the oldest meeting room of the university. They serve decent British cuisine. In warmer months you can enjoy a stunning view onto the Redcliffe Camera from their gardens.
T. D.
Very popular place! When we arrived there was people cueing outside of the building. Coffee was awesome, food was amazing too. Location is nice but you will more than likely have to sit next to strangers for space ha
A. H.
Very popular, but that means very crowded. Lovely place and very nice staff. The food was ok and could have been abit cheaper. Not a bad place and would recommend if your looking for a bite to eat in Oxford.
J. O.
Great choice of freshly made, tasty food. Great Coffee and cakes. Scones with Jam and Clotted Cream very popular. Gorgeous gardens and views
B.
Here is one of the most famous place in Oxford. Normally, here is crowded by people but it is worth it. The price is reasonable. Atmosphere is classic and gorgeous.
A. L.
So brilliant! Really lovely staff and the food was excellent for the price. Recommend grabbing an outside seat if the weather is reasonable! We'll definitely be back, thank you! 😀
S. A.
Amazing location and good! A must in Oxford!
A. B.
Very good food. You can choose. The treatment of the waitress is very cheerful helpfully for foreign people.
It has been a great experience for my family and me.
K. M.
The novelty of Vaults and Garden is the biggest part of this review. It is situated directly opposite (arguably) the most recognizable building in Oxford. Being able to sit outside on a delightful summer day, eating lunch or having tea while gazing at the Radcliffe Camera is a hard experience to beat.
This space is one that you can probably get the best image of life at Oxford as a student and potentially as someone living in the city. A brief lunch at Vaults and Garden will expose you to students running in and out of the library in a panic, students on their way too and from exams, people lounging in the sun, tourists taking tours around the city and those who live in the city simply going about their day through the chaos.
The food itself is not too special and perhaps a bit overpriced for what it is but the staff are incredibly friendly and again, the experience is hard to beat.
Y. L.
Beef bourguignon (w. Rice) is perfect!!!
S. A.
Super place, the stuff are amazing the food are delicious. I enjoyed every minutes there.
P. M.
Good honest tasty meals in an interesting setting. Be aware it gets busy though
W. T.
Thankfully they were kind enough to accommodate us and our dog on a wet and rainy day! Great scones and tea to warm up to. The organic beef chilli was also heavenly!
M. A. R.
Very nice cafe! Good quality coffee - best scones & hot chocolate in town!! Price of everything is reasonable. lovely environment
E. d. f. l.
Best place for a scone in Oxford! Efficient service, great location, good price and the scone itself is great!
K. M.
Beautiful building and good soup!
M. K.
Great atmosphere for a coffee in the morning, as it's within an old church from the 13th century. They also have outdoor seating with a view on the Radcliffe Camera.
D. P.
Very nice place to visit for lunch, friendly staff and fast service. Food was yummy and a view of the camera!!
P. V.
Great place dead in the centre of Oxford next to the Radcliffe camera, inside St Mary the Virgin's Church building. It can get quite busy with tourists and locals, but the coffee is excellent and I'm told the food is great as well.
K. B.
I hired the Vaults and Garden for a small catering job at the Bodleian Library. Everything was handled professionally and arrived on time. It was for a small wedding so punctuality was key! I would not hesitate recommending the Vaults and Garden to anyone needing some catering work. :-)
O. B.
The coffee is located in an old 13th century building, which makes it a really nice place to visit
J. A.
A mean café. You're only allowed 10% discount for having a KeepCup or for having a student card, not both. If you have discount, you're also not allowed a stamp on your loyalty card for getting a drink (?!?!). The drinks are expensive and, for an environmentally-conscious impecunious student, there are better value places.
T. G.
Fabulous choice of salads, best ever, had beetroot cake, delicious lovely place inside and outside, only down side was the very small toilet no disabled access
j. b.
Excellent food and they accept medium size dog. (Cocker spaniel)
M. H.
Amazing tea, very airy yet cosy and relaxed place, nice staff.
T. F.
Great tasty food and communal experience, great to dive in out of the rain. Friendly staff, but we thought it was a tad pricey! Still, really tasty.
J. W.
Fabulous food in the heart of Oxford. Lovely helpful staff. Worth a visit.
W. L.
Favorite spot for a meal in Oxford. Quick, tasty, historic. Lovely patio.
L. M.
Food was fine . Nothing special just fine . Staff were off hand and talked to a group of tourists next to me like they were children . When I asked where the toilets were they couldn't be bothered speaking just pointing. Not good.
D. G.
Dare I say it the most unusual place to have a coffee but we loved it. Location very good, prices and menu very good, staff very polite. If we're in Oxford I know where to go for a good cup of coffee
J. M.
Great food a drink, but a little expensive
A. W.
Lovely breakfast great little place to stop and refuel
D. G.
Fun little place to eat.
p. s.
Brilliant place great atmosphere and the food was unbelievable,if in Oxford please go there
S. S.
Lovely cafe with outstanding service, the staff are so attentive and friendly and the coffee is the best in town! Perfect place to relax for lunch.
S. T. T.
Very busy coffee, tea, food place. Starts serving lunch at 11.30. Good range of healthy and tasty lunches. Can have long queues, but seemed pretty efficient in dealing with them.
S. W.
This is a great cafe to visit on a study break. They have exceptional breakfast & lunch -- I've visited for both, plus espresso & pastries in the afternoon.
S. K.
Great view if you sit outside. Good food, small portions.
K. L.
A touch overpriced, but you're paying for cream tea time in the heart of Oxford and within shouting distance of the Bodleian Library and the rotund glories of the Radcliffe Camera.
We had their coconut and apricot cake, along with a cream tea set for two. Unfortunately, they ran out of clotted cream for the scones, and a slick of butter is poor substitute. A barista minion was sent to Tesco, but returned empty-handed. There must be a clotted cream shortage up north they're not telling us about. Everything came out to be about £8 or 9 for the two of us.
The inside seating has gorgeous vaulted ceilings, but its the outside seating along the church graveyard that won us over.
J. K.
What a beautiful place, a lot of boat's ready to be reloaded, caught my eye with a fantastic boat, lovely to sit down and relax, had a latte and some absolutely lovely cake, very relaxing, you can take your dog's too
E. W.
Great buffet food every time at a good price and nice atmosphere
H. M.
Best café in Oxford.
E. A.
Great freshly prepared food and lovely setting. Can get very busy and peak times with tight spacing between seats but worth it if you find a spot.
근.
Perfect. Kind and gentle staffs, reasonable price, cozy and warm atmosphere. The best place where you can enjoy a right English breakfast.
J. C.
Excellent breakfast this morning for 6. Thanks for the lovely food 😊

Very central cafe / restaurant right in the heart of Oxford and very close to some very interesting sights. The cafe serves great food and I think is a social enterprise - so worthy of support.
