Reviews of Pexava Dance Company

My wife and I had many fabulous times with Pexava. Initially we took lessons and visited their social evenings, then we joined their performing groups, eventually we joined their semi-pro team and performed at venues in many different countries, an opportunity we never thought was possible when we started. Gil and Shelley are true professionals who know how to get the best from their students and put everything they teach into practice. Whether you're new to salsa, or you're seasoned dancer and want to improve your technique, or even want to try your hand at some performance work, you really should take a look at Pexava's socials and courses.

Be taught by two people who are not only some of the best dancers you will meet but also the best teachers as well. It's a fairly good venue to learn in. Always a lot of fun with lots of high level dancers both in the class and even more so for the later social dancing. Classes are not for beginners (Conway Hall) which isn't a problem because London is saturated with beginner classes.

Professional yet warm & friendly with outstanding teaching & dancing skills. I traveled from Essex to both their Holborn and West London venues, such is the quality of the classes. The attention to detail in the lessons along with the ability to convey technique is incredible. This is an excellent Dance company for both an introduction to Salsa and to take those further through the levels of Improver, then Intermediate and right up to Advanced as well as Semi-Professional should anyone want that. Monthly social events are also held which are great for freestyle dancing, accompanied with fantastic music in a friendly & social atmosphere.

The beginner class/course with Shelly is one of the best in London. The improver/internediate/advanced classes are not so good. Half the lesson is spent on unreproducible, complex shines instead of partnerwork. This has its merit in training your feet, but isn't the the best use of class time as it can be done at home on your own. The classes exist so students can learn to dance with a partner as most don't have access to dance partners which is what the lesson is for. Add almost a complete lack of music in the lesson to it or literally no teaching to music which is obviously teaching anything other than dance and you might as well save time staying at home and practicing on your own and you'll habe way more fun as you'll probably be doing it to music. Boring lessons for that reason. The long, boring 10-15+ figure routines are piled on, all practiced without music, and at the cost of learning how to dance to music. Learning a few figures per lesson, to music, would be so much better. Poor teaching overall at above beginner level and no understanding of how people learn. They have a following of some people who have been doing it for years, but most people don't return. They spend a lot of money promoting it, perhaps should invest in less lazy, more informed teaching.
Finally, lots of the students are up their own, especially those who have been doing it for years and won't dance with you unless you are quite advanced. The teachers could easily correct it by making practice part of the lesson and making people swap so everybody gets to dance.

I love learning salsa with the teachers at Pexava, their approach and methodology are splendid. A proper dancing teaching approach, not only that, teachers are very friendly. Xx

I've been going every Tuesday for years and I have no intention of stopping because I still enjoy it and I still learn. The teaching is top class and Gil and Shelley are lovely people as are those they work with.
