Reviews of Bitterne Surgery

I wonder how many people would cope with a phone line constantly ringing in their ears? So, spare a thought for the staff here who, have to deal with this day in day out.
Yes, it is difficult sometimes to get through to make an appointment. But, that’s to be expected for a BUSY surgery!
Even in a large Hospital you have to wait for a long time to be seen. It’s the sign of the times.
In a perfect world we’d all like to get through first time, not be in a queue and spend half an hour with a doctor telling them all about yourself.
Well? Have some patience and you will eventually be attended to.
I have a lot of respect for the receptionists and have not had any reason to complain.
Patience are a virtue.

Can I first of all clarify that the reason you can always get an appointment at this surgery is because there is no pre booking system. Pre booking takes valuable appointments and time that people invariably fail to turn up for. Yes it takes 90+ calls to get through but generally you'll get an appointment that day. I know many friends who cannot get an appointment with their GP for weeks/months. I've never encountered any issues with the reception staff. They have a very difficult job and have never been anything but helpful to me. You get what you give eh?

They need a better system for the phones. Having to call and getting a busy Tone and then repeat until you get through maybe never is so archaic. Anything would be better, phone queue system or releasing appointments online for eg. It’s impossible to get through.

All who work,at bitterne surgery, are so helpful, polite, and give advice,on who to see,one of the best surgeries I've ever been to. I have got a lot of trust built up ,from my Doctor's, and to me that means everything. Thank you ,great team .

I've been with this surgery for over 2 years now and can't praise them enough, from the Doctors nurses HCA's and reception staff they are all brilliant. Even through the lock down we would get a telephone consultation and if we needed to be seen we would get a face to face appointment the same day. Thank you to everyone at Bitterne surgery for all your hard work.

Well I was going to book in to see why I keep blacking out and having seizures, I started calling at 8:30 exactly, and 93 dials later I just gave up.
All the staff are great, can't fault them, just can't get through.
I do hear one ring but then it just goes to line busy.
I would go to another surgery but all the reviews are the same or worse.
How am I meant to book an appointment if I can't get through?

Dr Benning is a lovely doctor. Has listened to concerns multiple times and has a kind and compassionate bedside manner. Would recommend

Brilliant professional surgery, The communication with Southampton General is first class, they support each other when dealing with patients. The receptionists have always been very supportive and helpful especially in an emergency situation. Very pleased to be with this surgery as always had good support through some complex illnesses.
Thankyou for the organisation of the vaccination for Covid it was done easily and hassle free for us both.

Brilliant doctor's surgery, receptionists have always been polite and helpful. Hazel especially has been very helpful and accommodating. Always had a face to face appointment with a doctor when needed.

Always an efficient and easy visit( as much as the doctors can be) Receptionists, nurses and doctors always friendly and efficient. Dr Benning and Dr Phillips are both patient and willing to listen to you before trying to help. All GPs are limited within the budgets and logistics of the NHS, however at West End Road they seem to manage the appointment system and footfall extremely well all things considered.
I am pleased I registered my family here years ago as we have never been let down yet.
My only minor criticism would be easier access for people with buggies etc at the front (maybe automatic doors) but that is money that the NHS does not currently have.

I have been registered with the surgery for over 4 years now and always had great experience with doctors, nurses and staff. Always helpful, always have time to appoint and each doctor has different specialty, therefor I am always seen by one who could give the best advice and help. Thank you all for providing such an excellent service in the difficult times for NHS.

Thanks for the incredible work done by Dr Benning Snr and Jnr at Bitterne West End Road Surgery. They consistently provide services that are a positive exception to the standard in Southampton. No-one doubts that health can always warrant more money but often more money doesn't provide the better outcome we would hope for in the NHS. The Benning's are role models to the best that our NHS could be and consistently out perform the other surgeries in the local area. This is again noted with their response to vaccine rollout. With Thanks

the doctors at this surgery are first class however the reception manageress has a lot to learn about customer care , she is rude, uncaring, and wont listen to the patients needs. I was a senior manager for 500 staff and thousands of customers every day so I do know what I am talking about we won the gold award for customer service 14 out of 16 years I was the manager, I hope this person is sent on a customer handling course to improve the experience of visiting the doctors.

I have been with this surgery for over 35 years. In all this time they have been amazing. Helpful, kind, caring and thorough. A huge support with my elderly parents. The dr’s are exceptional.
The receptionists were always so helpful and couldn’t do enough but where have they gone? Sadly it’s not the same. Instead a new abrupt and uncaring voice.

Mixed first impressions. We moved to the area and wanted to register as new patient. First i downloaded their new patient pack from their website which we filled in. When i handed them in i was told this is the wrong form and i need to fill in new form. It is ok as the receptionist was helpful and understanding, but i would argue if that form is incorrect then please remove it from the website (would save lot of time and paper for everyone) when i returned with the filled out paperwork the receptionist wanted us to attend a nurse meeting-again understandable. But we both work full time and appointment given to me wasn't good for anybody working and i cant afford to have a day off for a nurse appointment. I tried to ask for a different appointment but then i was given an attitude from the receptionist... I am sorry that i am working but there is no need to be arrogant. The whole situation was absurd... I wasn't felt welcome at all and i was really angry for treating me like that when at my old surgery nothing was trouble for the staff, they were always polite and the smiled. Makes to research for another surgery just because of this attitude you got there.

Lovely place with friendly staff. Doctors are good and nurses are good. You obviously need to register to use the doctors ect but right next door is a pharmacy attached to it which can be used by anyone. Would recommend to anyone to register here if looking for a doctors surgery.

An old-fashioned surgery led by an excellent, dedicated physician. Excellent service and care delivery.

I had the same issue as some other people here. I recently registered and one of the receptionists made me feel incredibly stupid because I misfilled the paperwork (I forgot to tick a box in the Women Only section!).
