Reviews of Howies Restaurant
G. L.
The food here was good, we had their set dinner for 2 courses for 20 pounds, although we had to add an additional 2 and 7 pounds, for the catch of the day and lamb rump, respectively. Food were seasoned well - meat or fish were not overcooked or too dry, calamari was not oily, and we enjoyed the mackerel pate. Reasonably priced overall. We note that our server’s customer service was below average, however she was chatting it up and significantly more friendly with the table next to us.

Everyone I have taken here has had an amazing experience. The restaurant provides high quality food, that is also very tasty. Vegan options are available. The deserts are especially tasty, so highly recommend you try them out. They have soup of the day and fish of the day, always made using fresh ingredients. The inside of the restaurant is very well decorated and the staff very helpful and nice. Every time I have been there I ended up leaving extremely satisfied and happy with the meal I had. It is not the cheapest place but I believe it is worth it!

Placed in a great location, just near the entrance to Calton Hill, the restaurant is in a lovely building and is has a very impressive dining hall inside. The room must be 8-10m high, so provides a really great atmosphere. Note that there are a couple of tables in the lobby area, so you may want to double check you don't have one of those if you want the full experience.
Menu was very interesting and gave a real challenge over what to choose - I guess I will have to come back some time. The specials are great too, which is not always the case.
Everything we ordered was perfectly presented and very well prepared. Service was attentive, professional and very friendly.
I really can't fault this venue, and we left the biggest tip of the holiday, so that pretty much sums it up.
I.
Had an amazing dinner, delicious starters and a stunning main course. The staff couldn’t be more helpful either, even calling a taxi for us when we asked for a local cab number. Only shame is that we were only in Edinburgh on a trip otherwise we would be booking another table there soon!
P. T.
Located very close to Calton Hill, this place is relatively crowded when we visited. The food tasted amazing with such a beautiful interior to give extra warmth to customers.
I ordered set menu with 2 drinks. I could say the food was charged in a fair price, but it was relatively expensive for the drink.
Overall good experience.

Love the sauce that goes with salmon. Great price for amazing dishes and service. Lovely interior as well. Would definitely recommend to families and friends. Thank you for the experience.
C. F.
Delicious food and kind service in a warm historic atmosphere. Every dish was lovely. If there was anywhere they could inprove it might be some additional wine options.
J.
Lovely first experience of Scottish cuisine in a fantastic setting. Staff were really attentive and the food was very good & reasonably priced, would recommend for first timers or those looking for a proper bite to eat
K. B.
The best salmon I’ve possibly ever had. That’s saying a lot as 1. I live in Seattle, arguably one of the salmon capitals of the US 2. Have traveled all over the world & salmon is one of my favorites
After being away for 2 years due to the pandemic, so happy to be back visiting my favorite city. This is my new favorite spot in Edinburgh.
M.
We had a family dinner here after getting married at the registrars and the food and atmosphere were fantastic.
The owners of the establishment should be so grateful to have such amazing, hardworking staff that provided us such a stress free and purely happy environment.
Thank you again for the night! You really made everyone's trips worth it.

Excellent food, friendly staff. Try the haggis starter. It is amazing. We dined on the Salmon and a Hake fish special. Both were great. Memorable ambiance. Overall a great evening.
K. T.
One of the best haggis served here. However, the mains were just alright. I got the mushroom risotto and pan fried salmon. It was a bummer that they don’t do takeaway as well. Our food had to go to waste.
C. S.
The food was really good and the staff were very helpful and respectful of allergies. The portions were rather small but very delicious!
We highly recommend the haggis with the whiskey and the toffee pudding.
Would recommend to book a table beforehand!
A. F.
Very elegant place and the prices are acceptable. We ate pan roasted hake with potatoes, courgettes, peppers, cherry tomatoes and basil oil and lo shetland pan roasted salmon with crispy potatoes, chorizo, spinach and pea velouté. Both were excellent. For dessert we chose a Howies famous banoffee pie which was nothing short of delicious. Strategic location near Calton Hill, so you can't miss it!
H. S.
Three appetizers, a dessert, a Negroni, and we were all set. The haggis was delicious, the skink was grand, and the pigeon was a unique treat. It’s affordable, classy without being fussy, and slightly off the beaten track of the Royal Mile for an easy and cozy meal without hordes of people. Make reservations.
M. Z.
For me it was the best restaurant in Scotland. A very beautiful room and very elegant setting. The food was amazing and there was a big selection of dishes. The staff are lovely people who serve guests in multiple languages. Mrs. Beata gives great recommendations if you don’t know Scottish cuisine well. My must go next time in Edinburgh!
W. C.
The food from this place is fantastic. Tried a few dishes from them now and they have all been delicious. The staff are very friendly.
M. W.
Went here for a friend's birthday meal and the food was perfect, couldn't fault it at all and the steak was phenomenal, cooked perfectly. Great service and lovely friendly staff, will definitely return
W. O.
Outstanding place..food and service was absolutely brilliant
Staff were a dream very attentive
Had my good lady's surprise 60th and they made it perfect..thanks guys.
N. B.
Fantastic meal and wonderful atmosphere. Staff are exceptionally helpful & made us feel totally welcome. I will definitely return.
J. H.
Excellent lunch all my dishes were extremely tasty, though my friends thought the version shepherd's pie was a bit lacking in flavour. Service was superb & social distancing screens looked like they were part of the decor. Will definitely return. Good value for money too.
S. D.
Food is fresh and really well cooked. Lovely ambience overall and is worth giving a try for Scottish food if you ever visit Edinburgh. Afterwards one can take a walk for some lovely views up on Calton Hill nearby.
a. l.
Celebrated my birthday here with friends and family. Cozy interior, good food, fantastic service by the server who tended our table. Had an excellent time.
R. J.
First time at Howies and the meal was delicious. We both had 3 courses each. (Forgot to take pictures of starter) Quick, friendly service. 100% recommend to family and friends.
Would like to see more gin options on the menu.
P. R.
Fabulous restaurant within easy walking distance of Edinburgh Waverley and the St James Centre heading towards Carlton Hill.
Excellent menu and very pleasant setting. I had the specials on the day and thoroughly enjoyed both courses. Great choice of wines and if you go early mid week they have fab offers.
Highly recommended.

Turning up in a tracksuit and a backpack wasn't the vibe of the average diner here, but I was welcomed and provided a table without reservation. The front of house was most accomodating and the staff were very much attentive and friendly. I came for the highly recommended Cullen skink and was truly impressed by the comforting winter soup. The banoffee pie or sticky toffee pudding, it's a tough call, I'd go for both! A pleasure it was to visit. Next time it will have to be the haggis, a question of hindsight and being spoilt for choice!
D. M.
Great food, very relaxed atmosphere. Generous portions and food. Lovely staff too. Highly recommended.
N. M.
We enjoyed a great time with our extended family on Easter Sunday. Friendly staff and well presented food. They were very good with the younger children. Despite being very busy, we were able to stay in the side room until our taxi arrived. Recommended
D. C.
Enjoyed private dining as a large group. Food wine and service good. Central location near railway station and bus routes.

Came here for a evening meal with my wife. The service was excellent friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, quick with orders, and table clearance. The restaurant setting is very nice, lots of tables but doesn't feel crowded, nice decor too. The food was outstanding. We had wood pigeon with potato rosti and calamari for starters. Then venison on horseradish mash and roasted chicken breast with a cheesy mash. For desert sticky toffee pudding and a winter crumble. All were very well presented and tasted great. I highly recommend coming here.
J. J.
Excellent food, staff very efficient providing fantastic service. Reasonably priced.
Very busy and a little difficult to hear due to the echo. Otherwise a great venue for lunch or dinner.
I highly recommend Howies at Waterloo place, very central and very accommodating to anyone who has a disability.
P. G.
Nice lunch, well-cooked food if a wee bit unadventurous but good value for money in the city centre. Good wine, also reasonably priced. Was busy on Sunday lunchtime with tables squeezed into every corner so must be popular. Service was excellent.
G. T. U.
The restaurant is quit nice in general. Both me and my GF like the design. However, what we have to say is that the portion of venison is tooo small (only 3 pieces) for 21 pounds. I was hoping I get a few more pieces than 3
L. T.
Great restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh. Definitely need to book as it's really busy, but the layout is spacious with lots of traditional touches. Good menu choices and the food was delicious. Staff were friendly and just the right level of attentive. Would definitely recommend and visit again.
S. c.
This place was amazing! The food was delicious! I especially loved the bread and the soup! Definitely try the soup!
K. R.
Very good restaurant with traditional dishes very well cooked for very attractive prices. The staff is really nice and attentive to the customer. We went back the day after !
G. D.
One of the best restaurant in Edinburgh. Excellent food for the price and great service. Appreciate the tables being not too close each other to maintain a sense of privacy (and safe for Covid, too, of course)
R.
Very impressed on my first visit to this restaurant. Felt well spaced out, large clear screens, high ceilings and safe environment. Range of options was good and the fish dish of the day was absolutely delicious. Desert was a very good size and they were accommodating to guests in out party who needed a non alcoholic version of the desert. We had an early evening booking but they were able to accommodate us seated in the foyer for coffee as we had overrun our 2 hour booked slot. Excellent service and delicious food would definitely recommend.
D. L.
Excellent.
Food and setting is incredible. Great value menu.
Book ahead as there isn't a huge amount of tables for such a high quality place.
J.
Beautiful venue and clearly popular, Howie's is a nice dinner option in the city centre. Don't skip the bread and dips, very tasty. Not many options for the veggies and vegans sadly, I ended up with a beetroot salad which was tasty but it would have been nice to see more on the menu. Server brought out salmon instead of salad, which was swiftly corrected but took the whole table's plates away when changing and returned all food lukewarm. BYOB if you like.
S. T.
Excellent menu, though we all went for specials, and very well priced. Friendly staff too, happy atmosphere all round, lots of happy customers. We had venison & mushroom casserole (melt in the mouth!), or pan fried hake fillet with vegetables (light, well flavoured), or shepherds pie (proper lamb mince with carrots & peas). Ample portions of hearty food while the sleet battled with the sunshine outside, brrr!
J. O.
Definitely a quality over quantity place, which suits me just fine. This is a top-notch dining experience, should be Michelin-calibre, and in such an ornately decorated Georgian edifice at the base of Calton Hill. I greatly enjoyed the Shetland salmon dish that I ordered, probably the best salmon I ever tasted. It was also my first time trying haggis, which I actually really liked. Service was very prompt and I'd gladly consider Howie's again on my next visit to Edinburgh.
M. M.
We went there for dinner, the haggis is great! It's a must, you need to at least try it.
Then we went for the casserole of the day, which was venison (deer meet) and mushrooms, and the catch of the day. Good food. The only downsideis that you can't just walk in and dine in, you probably need to make a reservation. A little bit pricey too, 70£ for two, but the food is great.
L. M.
Me and my other half are in Edinburgh for a small holiday, and ended up booking Howies for a last minute anniversary dinner.
All the staff were very accommodating, we asked to move to a more secluded table (because we are loud people and didn’t want to disturb fellow diners) and the staff were happy to move us.
The food was outstanding! Had the smoked salmon starter which I demolished. My other half had focaccia which was as proper and cakey as it should be. We both had the venison main and oh my god it was stunning, so tender and tasty. We then shared a cheeseboard, affagato and some lemon sorbet all of which slapped 👋
Our waiter George was super attentive, and defo made the evening that bit more special. He is a credit to Howies!
The Prosecco on arrival to congratulate us on our anniversary was an extra special touch.
We will be back to Howies the next we come to Edinburgh 🙂
(Special mention to the happy anniversary plate)
J. L. N.
Beautiful Georgian room housing a very pleasant restaurant. There is a good choice of Scottish dishes on the menu as well as steaks, ice creams etc. The waiting staff are super efficient and friendly. Great place.
M. T.
Incredible restaurant. The catch of the day was so fresh and cooked to perfection and the casserole of the day was beef and mushroom and it was to die for.
A. C.
The food was awesome and our server, Ed, was the best! The place was busy, but we didn’t feel rushed and they did a great job making each table feel intimate. We will definitely be returning next time we are in Edinburgh.
T. R.
Sat outside for a while watching the busy streets. When I went in Edward was so welcoming and friendly showed me to table. Was super busy so definitely book. Beautiful surroundings. Food was really good value two course £16.95. There was a delay in the food but they where apologetic.
Very attentive staff would recommend..Will definitely go back
They even took money off for the inconvenience of the wait which I didn't even mention. How kind ..
N. M.
We had a large party celebration and were very happy with the service and the food. We didn't feel rushed and were able to stay in the side room until our taxi arrived. I would be happy to return when next in Edinburgh. Recommended.
A. C.
Great atmosphere, lovely building, the food was fantastic yet reasonably priced and the service was top notch and surprisingly quick given how busy it was when I visited.
C. H.
The waiter was so attentive without being a nuisance. The food was excellent. We had an early meal so the price was so good. It was my first visit and I will definitely go back.
S. D.
Was seated by probably the most handsome waiter I've ever seen. More to the point, he was efficient and professional.
I had the early dining menu, the arancini was crispy and served with a tasty green salsa. The charred chicken main was beautifully moist and flavourful, served with perfectly cooked broccoli on a bed of mash. The mash was fantastic, oftentimes I find restaurants over season (for my palate) or drown out the flavour with butter and or cream; top marks to the chef this evening the mash was fluffy, creamy and light. All washed down with rhubarb fizz.
a.
Fantastic food and very attentive staff. Our waiter worked hard to deal with my weird allergies and he checked literally every ingredient (sulphites sneak under the radar a lot). The chefs sorted out food for me that was slightly off menu without me asking.
The venue itself was tightly packed, though there were barriers between tables. Anyone with mobility aids would struggle to get to and from their table through the crowd, but almost all tables are on one level so accommodations would be easy to accomplish if you mentioned them ahead of time.
Unsure of toilet accessibility as I didn't go and they were not well sign posted.
K. H.
Great for a special birthday treat, they couldn't have been nicer and the food was tastaaaaaaay
R. R.
The staff were amazing and the food was incredible!! Great atmosphere...will definitely be back!!
P. M.
Lovely restaurant. The food was delicious and really quick service! Ross served us and he was very polite and friendly! Thank you so much we will definitely be back!
M. C.
Very pleasant. Nice staff, good service, very nice food. Howie's is always reliable and excellent value. So happy to see it thriving after all these difficult times. We'll done !
D. W.
Service here was very good, the food was very well made as well. Straight forward menu with classic options but everything that came out was very tasty and well prepared. Wine list was decent and of course whiskey selection was great
h. c.
Excellent service. You need to book. The special fish of the day was excellent. The calamari starter let it down as I think it was from frozen (very chewy) but I wont choose that starter again, that's why only 4 stars. Would definitely go again.
a. f.
Quintessential Scottish cuisine. The place was recommended by a local and I cannot thank him enough.
Walking distance from Waverley Bridge. This place should be your first stop if your reach Edinburgh at noon.
Reservation recommended. We were lucky as we visited on Monday for lunch.
Good lunch deal.
Loved the Haggis, tatties and Neeps. Flavourful, smooth... Highly recommended.
For the mains, I preferred the venison casserole over the cherry tomato and caper sauce roasted hake.
Sticky toffee pudding (Heaven!) and banoffee pie were delicious.
Moments like these, I wish I was a cow and had 4 stomachs.
I am not a great fan of their drinks, Aperol Spritz & Bramble fizz, but they did look delicious.
Howies has another outlet in Edinburgh and a sister restaurant called Scotts. I haven't been there, but if the food is similar, then I truly recommend it.
If ever I revisit Edinburgh, Howies will definitely be on my checklist.
d. f.
6 years living in Edinburgh, I've heard good to great things of this restaurant (smelled too as for one year I used to passed by daily) and yet never tried. Until today. We have been at late lunch and ordered a 3 course meal each one. I had haggis, beef casserole and banoffee pie. All very good to excellent. My wife had Cullen skink, grilled hake and sticky toffee pudding. All very good. I was expecting a kind of different place, from some descriptions I got. Instead, I was nicely surprised by a very informal environment, tidy but essential, impeccable dishes, and cheap for the quality of stuff. I'll be back for sure.
H. J.
We dinner twice here because the chocolate martini was so good! Service is good but strict because of tourist foot traffic. Reservations are a must for dinner time and lunch can be busy too.
M. M.
Howies gave us 5* attention through the entire process of planning our wedding there. We used their private dining room for a family meal after our ceremony and hired out the venue for our evening reception.
Through menu planning, timings for the day and special requests Emily was always at the end of an email making it happen.
On the day we could not have been happier or more at ease. Emily and her team had taken care of everything. From liaising with our florist and cake baker to taking care of our families whilst we had photos taken.
The food was delicious for our meal. Our canapés went down a treat and our evening snack of fish and chip bowls are still being talked about. Emily and her team created the most delicious ‘mocktails’ for us!
Our band was given pride of place to create a brilliant evening atmosphere. The staff all joined in the fun which made our evening.
A huge thank you to Emily, we could not have done it without you.
L. C.
This is a beautiful traditional restaurant. Went on a saturday lunchtime, very busy, pre booking advisable. Lovely menu with a great choice of traditional Scottish fayre. Great service, very attentive & friendly waiters. Prices are reasonable for both quality of food & level of service.
K. G.
Staff lovely, food great. Would give 4.5 if I could. The half a star is lost because of the acoustics of the dining room - if you're a little hard of hearing it becomes a struggle to have a conversation if there are many diners in the room.
G. G.
I have dined in Howies a number of times and I have never been disappointed. The food is excellent and great value for money. The staff have always been very professional and I have always liked the architecture of the restaurant. I would highly recommend.
M. N.
Love Howies. Good food, staff are lovely and accomodating. Only downside is just how expensive the wine is when you want to order it. They would sell more if slightly cheaper I'm sure.
C. T.
My partner and I had a really lovely experience at Howies. Friendly staff, amazing food, excellent presentation and seasonal ingredients. Also many vegan options. Will visit again if we are in Edinburgh again!
A. R.
Discovered this place by accident, coming down from Calton Hill. We were pleasantly surprised that we’d found such a good restaurant on our way .. we arrived around 7 pm and were able to find a table without booking in advance, though the restaurant looked pretty busy. Food was excellent and service was high standard, definitely recommended! Prices are fairly high but well worth it for a fine dine experience. They have traditional Scottish dishes on their menu as well as other innovative dishes, fresh fish and game. We went for the day’s specials: pan roast fillet of hake with sautéed potatoes, courgettes, cherry tomatoes, spinach and tapenade dressing; beef and mushroom casserole with rosemary roasted baby potatoes and a broccoli side-dish. Needles to say it was all extremely tasty! Even the olives we ordered for starters were properly marinated and delicious.
Worth mentioning is that they have some sort of promotion if you get there earlier, before 6.30 pm.
L. O.
We held my husband and sister-in-law's joint 40th here and it was fab! There were 17 adults and 5 kids, in such a beautiful big room...with plenty of room for the kids to run about. The staff were very friendly and attentive and catered to a number of dietary requests and the food was lovely. From the moment of my first enquiry to the follow up after the event, the staff have been great, they even accommodated my surprise magician!
b. c.
Fantastic service and food. Were able to sit outside, very attentive and charming staff and of course there's the food... £12.95 for a two course lunch, and while the menu is not big every dish is very different so plenty choice. I especially positively noted that the waiter proactively asked for food allergies- that's rare and very appreciated
B. C.
Went here for a friend's retirement lunch The staff were very attentive but not overbearing.
Menu was smaller than expected but a good choice
I went for the curry I think it was lentil, butternut squash and coconut, it was a little disappointing The only flavour was from the coriander garnish not at all spicy. And although served in an oven to table dish it was on the cold side too. I was asked if there was an issue but said no as the venue was the choice of the lady retiring
That said I would go again
B. H.
Make a resevation prior to going, it will guarantee your table. The haggis starter was delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing! The only downside was, you are on a time limit from the time you sit toneat and when they need the table for the next reaevation. Otherwise it was a very nice experience.
H. H.
Ok ne of my must go to places when I'm Edinburgh
Food invariably good. Noise levels quite high and booking on-line can be quirky. A reservation I tried to make appeared to be ok and then changed status to nothing available. Annoying.
M. M.
Hello,
We recent held our wedding reception with you on Thursday 19th May.
We honestly can’t thank you enough, from our first email (of many) to leaving on the day you have all been incredible. Lara, Emily and Ryan, your replies were always fast, knowledgeable, helpful and kind. You gave us reassurance while planning something we have never done before and your customer service is second to none.
When we came in before the wedding Ryan had all of our paperwork at the ready and was on hand to answer any questions we had.
And then that takes us to the day… I have no words! The food was the best ive ever eaten and has been the talk of the family ever since. Service was fast and nothing was too much trouble. I didn’t catch the name of the man who was serving us but he was calm and kind, even allowing us to push back the timings when we arrived late.
He served us first as bride and groom and our guests meals arrived very soon after. The food was hot, fresh and amazing quality.
You guys even went as far as to make none alcoholic cocktails for our pregnant maid of honour, it was so special.
Thank you again, we will be booking back in for our 1st Anniversary.
Kindest regards
Mr and Mrs Mckim-Devey xxx

Very pleasant place for lunch in a bright and airy building. Good value for a full service restaurant. Just alongside one of the routes up to Calton Hill. Only 3 or 4 mins walk from St James Centre, so a good place to get away from the busy and somewhat overpriced eating options in the shopping centre.
E. W.
Visited with 4 ex work colleagues for lunch on Saturday. Excellent value with two courses for £14.95. Food is always a good standard and so well presented. I enjoyed the vegetarian haggis starter, served with neeps and tatties. Very tasty. Then I had the butternut squash risotto which was very filling and delicious. The salmon main looked delicious too with a huge fillet. Excellent value for money, great service on a very busy day. Will return again as I have over many years, to this consistent and reliable Edinburgh institution.
A. S. D.
Recommended by our tour guide, it was good. If you're looking for fine dining and posh environment, it won't disappoint.
Definitely the best place to try haggies if you're picky about what it is.
U. K.
The best place in Edinburgh to get high quality, scottish food at a reasonable price. Now this place is not cheap, yet the fresh ingredients and high levels of culinary skill, coupled with attentive service staff all make it worthwhile. This is a great place to try haggis neeps and tatties for the first time. I would recommend the Cullen Skink, a traditional scottish fish soup that
Is anazing in Howies. I had a casserole of the day, which was slow cooked beef and it was divine. The beef was tender and full of rich, complex flavours. The portions appear a bit small and "fancy" in photos but I can assure you that the food is hearty and we were all pleasantly full after two courses. However, the desserts are also wonderful, so we pushed ourselves to consume some sticky toffee pudding. The menu changes with the seasons but they always have excellent fish and vegetarian options and are good at dealing with allergies.
M. D.
Definitely worth it! Very friendly staff and great service. We have enjoyed the food and drinks. I had Huggis for a starter and it was very tasty , ham hock was very good too.
Both burgers excellent- veggie and beef .
I mean staff here goes the extra mile for sure running around to satisfy everyone. Seriously service was Exceptional!!! Thanks again
m. F.
Lovely place , excellent food which was well priced . Could've eaten there all holiday . The staff where friendly and attentive but the food was top notch . So good I didn't take photos . I just eat it ... how scandalous.
C. S.
Could have been a 5 star if the service had been more welcoming and professional. The waiting staff let the kitchen down- the food was very good.
J. C.
Amazing Scottish restaurant with a gluten free menu. High quality food, very tasty! I would definitely recommend it.
S. I.
Booked a table for a family birthday celebration. We all enjoyed the food and wine selection. Friendly and efficient service in a well presented Restaurant.
A. B.
Delicious traditional Scottish cuisine made with locally-sourced produce. Sumptuous desserts. Rounded off a terrific meal with an Irish Coffee - sublime!
J. T.
Amazing food and wonderful service. Definitely book ahead of time like we did, as the restaurant was very busy.
J. R.
Great informal restaurant, excellent menu and good wine list. Steaks very good and they mix a mean Vodka Martini. Staff friendly and polite. Early evening dinner menu good value for money.
A. G.
Great. Went for lunch on a Saturday which was only £18 for three courses. Drinks extra. Food was really nice, service was good, and the atmosphere was excellent. A nice big dining room buzzing along. Recommended without hesitation. Bookings essential.
C. g.
We were lucky enough to go to a wedding here, and we just wanted to comment on the excellent service from all of the staff throughout the night, and the absolutely delicious vegan options available to me.
A. M.
Enjoyed a great three course lunch with two cocktails for only £33. Not only was it great value, but the quality exceeded expectation. What was even more impressive was the selection of gluten free options across starters, mains and desserts. To be able to enjoy an apple crumble made my day. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
H. B.
Good food, good service, good ambience. Vegan option available. Would have got 5 stars if there had been a choice for vegans.
S. H.
MY GOSH.....If you want an absolutely brilliant Scottish food experience then this is it!!!! An Edinburgh HIDDEN GEM. GREAT STAFF, GREAT FOOD AND FANTASTIC SERVICE....1000% Going back next time I'm up in BONNIE SCOTLAND!!😁😁😉

Lovely meal. We all enjoyed everything about it. Presentation is excellent & great value ... be back as soon as we are out of lockdown .

First time visiting and glad we went. The service was fantastic. There was always someone available to ask when we needed anything.
The food was delicious and amazing value with the set lunch menu for 2 courses at £12.95 and 3 courses at £15.95. Good variety as well for vegetarians.
D. C.
Yummy meals, we enjoyed all our meals. The banoffee pie is definitely a must try. Very accomodating service, and they also offer vegan meals
C. G.
We saw this on TripAdvisor and we just went ..like a moment ago... I had the lobster my wife had the beef casserole, a glass of white wine(mandatory for lobster)..at the end a glass of whiskey (it's the capital of whiskey...it's obvious I would get a whiskey) 10y old Talisker.
Now the food was amazing...never had lobster ..but this one just melted in my mouth like ambrosia ...I know if you eat badly cooked lobster you will never have it again ... but this was cooked to perfection! The beef resembled to a beef bourguignon in my opinion ...but brilliant non the less! My compliment to the chef and to the restaurant! Highly recommend!

Great friendly service real lunchtime buzz about the place + quiet areas if preferred on a weekday. Christmas dinner altogether more "boisterous" as might expected. However the service is maintained at a high standard, food looks and tasted fab. Service is superbly well organised despite being very busy. Puts many other city centre establishments to shame. Like it a lot, easy to give 5 stars to Howies for service, quality ingredients, value and location.
J. S.
Really friendly and efficient service. The food was lovely; I had the slow cooked venison. My wife made good use of the cocktail menu.
W. S.
Great food and reasonable prices. Dining room spacious and not too noisy even though it was quite full. Enjoyed our appetizer including my first sample of Hahgis with Glenfiddich 12 year old scotch! The Scottish salmon was excellent, perfectly prepared and served with kale and potatoes. The smoked haddock soup was also good, as was the cod filet. Would have given them 5 stars except they apparently lost our dinner order for 40 minutes, which of course can happen anywhere but I was disappointed no one apologized.
N. Y.
We had 2 main courses the food was amazing and delicious I would highly recommend this place if you want to try and eat something different the staff was amazing and kind. They had great drinks as well thank you howies for an amazing food
N. B.
Lovely food, great service, you'll need to book in advance, they're so busy.
K.
The lamb shepherds pie was beyond delicious and the staff who were constantly busy were very professional and personable. Edward is delightful !
W. L.
Great prices for 2 or 3 course menus and many options. The food was all amazing. Great spot to try haggis for the first time as it was delicious!
S. I.
An absolute bargain for a 3 course meal. I dined in at Howies today and the experience was great. The staff found me a seat immediately and the food was gorgeous. I loved the Scottish specialities they serve here and would recommend to others.
J. G.
I didn't have a proper lunch so I can only talk about the starter that was fantastic.
The restaurant is very close to the train station, and also close by Calton Hills. It have a cozy big room and the staff is nice. I ordered haggis and a local beer and both things were really good.
M. W.
This place was amazing! The atmosphere was so calm and relaxing and the setting just beautiful! The food was gorgeous and the staff made me feel like I was being doted on hand and foot, they couldn't have been more helpful if they tried! Lovely place and would recommend to anyone!
N. S.
Very friendly staff. Food was amazing. Highly recommended. We will definitely be back.
C. W.
A lovely Sunday luncheon enjoyed by the 9 of us. The mackerel pate was devine. A great end to a fab weekend in Edinburgh. Will certainly come again when back in Edinburgh.
Thank you.
R. W.
Absolutely delicious food.
I had the chicken breast and haggis starter. To top off the meal, I had the white and black chocolate. For drinks, there was sparkling water, original and red sky Innis & Gunn.
The prices are really nice, and the general atmosphere is comfortable. All the tables for regular guests is just in one room, so that is a drawback as it creates a lot of noise. When we were there, the waiters took a long time to notice us when we wanted something more. But generally really happy.
Worth a visit.
M. M.
Fantastic restaurant. Staff outstanding, friendly and helpful. All wearing masks, one way system in place for Covid, felt really safe environment. The food was delicious. Highly recommended
B. C.
We lucked out to get a table here for supper on a Sunday, and service was excellent all through our meal. This place prides itself on utilizing Scottish ingredients and I could taste that difference in quality and freshness. The portions are not large—not like American standards—but the amounts were completely satisfactory. We started with an appetizer of ciabatta, just a £, that gave us 4 pieces of luscious bread. My entree was Shetland salmon on potatoes and peas, cooked to perfection, and in a sauce that complemented everything. My husband had the Scottish ribeye, which came with fries and a small frisée salad. For this, our last day in Scotland, we sprung for a quintessential dessert as well: sticky toffee pudding, complete with a scoop of Scottish ice cream. The sauce was so good I was tempted to lick the bowl clean.
S. T.
Fun atmosphere friendly staff. The food is a little more elegant smaller portions but it's very high quality. The house dessert was delicious!!
c.
Had a wonderful experience at this restaurant last year. I was traveling and it didn't feel weird to be dining alone by myself. The fish I had was cooked perfectly, the skin crispy and white meat juicy. The haggis, oh the haggis, I fell in love. If you're adamant about offals, I encourage you to have a taste of their dish here and wait it change your perspective. The banoffee pie is something I can eat every snack, dessert, breakfast? I'll be sure to come back here when I go visit again.
K. G.
We had pre booked before we visited. An extensive menu. 3 of us went and had all had a lovely meal.
S. C.
A great place for dinner out in a big group. The food and wine are good and so is the service.
L. C.
This is a beautiful traditional restaurant. Went on a saturday lunchtime, very busy, pre booking advisable. Lovely menu with a great choice of traditional Scottish fayre. Great service, very attentive & friendly waiters. Prices are reasonable for both quality of food & level of service.
M. W.
This place was amazing! The atmosphere was so calm and relaxing and the setting just beautiful! The food was gorgeous and the staff made me feel like I was being doted on hand and foot, they couldn't have been more helpful if they tried! Lovely place and would recommend to anyone!
P. T.
Had not booked but was found a table after a short wait. Staff very pleasant, good choice of lunch menu.
Pleasant atmosphere.
H. H.
Ok ne of my must go to places when I'm Edinburgh
Food invariably good. Noise levels quite high and booking on-line can be quirky. A reservation I tried to make appeared to be ok and then changed status to nothing available. Annoying.
S. T.
Fun atmosphere friendly staff. The food is a little more elegant smaller portions but it's very high quality. The house dessert was delicious!!
C. K.
Supberb! Food was delicious. Service by waiter Eduard was tops.
M. R.
Fantastic food and great staff. We had a lovely evening.
G. T.
High end , but 'local'' food in a comfortable, warm set up. I took a bigger group here - booked extra room. Management is very accomodating, staff and waiters are kind and knowledgeable (about food and drinks as well). I challenged them with my vegetarian demands and gin choices but the really helped me out. Service was smooth and fast.
More vegetarian and vegan choices would be great.
Excellent place.
J. T.
Incredible place, great decor and amazing food, all seasonal options and really nice staff, big props to our waiter who liked my Bicep top, he was extra attentive.
S. W.
Had excellent lunch with friends. Could not fault the food or the service. Be back soon.
E. T.
We just walked by the restaurant and saw lots of people queuing so we believed that they serve great food. It turned out to be true. Staffs are kind, food is delicious especially the cod and chocolate sundae.
K. W.
My husband and I booked a dinner here for our small wedding of 15 people and it was perfect! The pricing was very reasonable, the private room was great and the food was so delicious. The service was wonderful and they added nice little touches like printing out custom menus with our names. I would highly recommend Howie's for a special event!
N. W.
Excellent, especially the side salad, quite as good as the main dish, venison casserole ; a good glass of Viognier at just the right temperature ; starter and pudding well balanced ; good espresso ; service relaxed but effective .
P. W.
Went on Burns night and had the early evening special of 2 course’s for £18.99, I had the salmon main course and the Howies sundae, the food was perfection, an absolute 5 star experience and the service matched the cooking, this is how you run a restaurant and I can’t wait to enjoy dining here again.
P. T.
Had not booked but was found a table after a short wait. Staff very pleasant, good choice of lunch menu.
Pleasant atmosphere.
P. C.
Someone highly recommended Howies’ Haggis to me. Must say, they did not disappoint!
Lovely staff, very accommodating and overall a great atmosphere.
D. J.
We were an extended family group of 12 dining at the restaurant. The food was superb, and very good value for money. Service was a wee bit slow, but as a table of 12 that's perhaps to be expected. We all thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience at Howies.
R. S.
For dinner we had a good time at Howies with Scottish lobster with fizz, a bottle of wine and a caramel toffee pudding. The team there is friendly and the place is also nice.
A. Y.
Nice location, service and ambience and just the treat after a walk up Calton Hill. Lunch deals are great value and they don't scrimp on portions either. Highly recommend.
B. H.
Good service from staff, but my Sunday roast beef was a bit chewy! However I ate it all, but maybe choose something else next time.
Calamari starter was good if a little sparse.....a few more rings would have been better.
P. B.
We chose as a family to go to Howies in Waterloo place to celebrate our Sons 30th birthday.
What a fantastic decision that was.
We were looked after fabulously by Josh, he was so attentive to our party of 24 (Brogan took over in the last hour and fitted in seemlesly to the quality of service). It was great to see the management team hadn't changed from our visit last Yr for my 60th. Overall absolutely first class on every level.
p. t.
Great service great food. The special before 6.30pm is also great value. Love this place!
L. D.
So glad we chose this place to eat this evening, the nut roast was Incredible - the best I've ever had.
P. B.
Another great restaurant in Edinburgh a must try if you are in the area staff were amazing very helpful and happy will be visiting again when we come back
S. S.
Excellent choice of food at great value in lovely spacious surroundings whilst adhering to current restrictions. Very attentive and friendly service from all staff. Certainly highly recommend and will definitely return soon.
A. B.
They were nice to find a table for us. We had started, main and desserts. I really lived the started that was probably my favourite. We had smoked salmon. Lovely presentation and it was definitely enough. Then we had pan roasted salmon with potatoes and some sauce. Very good. A bit pricey but they were really attentive and friendly
Food was good as well.
L.
Good food, in a nice location. Staff are very friendly and give excellent service.
R. W.
I can without any doubt recommend Howies at Waterloo Place east end of Princes Street, when it comes to enjoying the ambience of a first class restaurant Howies excels with top quality food and great service. The private dining room ( Calton Room ) is ideal for a social get together to relax in the company of good friends, if it happens you are too relaxed and forget some personal item, which I am sure has happened to us all at one time or another when dining out it is reassuring to know that Howies have a lost and found location, and management and staff will do all they can to help you to reunite you with whatever you have lost. Most definitely five stars from me.
A. H.
Pigeon and Haggis were to die for, solid selection of whiskies and the lunch menu represents exceptional value. Superb.
J. S.
I've been here many times and it never disappoints! I recently took my girlfriend, who has dairy dietary requirements, and the team were very helpful in finding a dairy free option for her. The food, atmosphere and Covid safety were top notch, will definitely return when back in Edinburgh!
S. S.
We came for my daughters 18th, so a range of ages in our party but every single one of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Food was excellent, service was very friendly and great choice of deserts. Worth going to Edinburgh just for this place!
K. C.
I cannot thank your staff enough for the excellent service they provided at our Golden Wedding celebration in the private dining room on Saturday. Lara, Ryan, Charlotte and Douglas, made sure everything went smoothly during our evening. The main menu, the childrens menu and the gluten free menu were ideal 👍 The food was amazing - fine dining when catering for a group of 24 cannot be easy. Both the quality of the food and the service were excellent 👌 Our family and friends were very impressed with Howies and I am sure there will be further bookings for Howies in the future! It helped that our 4 grandchildren were on their best behaviour 🤪!
Many, many thanks once again to all those involved, for making this special occasion…special 🥂😷
M. P.
Food here was amazing. Had Ham Hough Terrine to start, which was great and Hake for main which was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. Nice atmosphere in the place as well with dining being in a beautiful room and service being very friendly. Would definitely recommend eating here.
L. M.
Fantastic food and service!
A. F.
I visit Edinburgh few times a year but first time I've been to Howies.. great service, friendly staff and OMG the food was awesome.. Haggis were sublime

This is a top notch spot at city centre. Delicious food and excellent quality, fresh and tasty. Well done guys, highly recommended this place
H.
One of the best risotto I've ever eaten.
Been there in 2019 for dinner, fresh products, great place and service.
A must do in Edinburgh.
M. L.
Excellent Scottish food and resonable pricing. I took my aunt and two cousins there to show them some Scottish cuisine experience and it was very lovely. Food was great, we love the steak and mind you it is huge. All the ladies on our table couldn't finish the steak it is that big. Great service too.
C. M.
Food was lovely
And our waitress.couldnt do enough for us.
Definitely be back
V. B.
Delicious food, great service and a charming enviroment.
The combo for a perfect restaurant. The delicious haggis of this place is a must try
J. M.
Good food and lovely service catering for a large group with patience
A. N.
Hired a room again for a private party - a significant birthday/wedding anniversary celebration. As always had a great time. The food was good & staff couldn't do enough to help make the day a success, especially Agne. Definitely worth a visit!
C. w. l. “.
prompt staff, we ate as a large group and everything came out nobody was left waiting. The staff worked really hard and it was very appreciated. There were a few that seemed stressed and it showed but I am assuming it's due to time of year amd covid.
L. S.
Don't understand why it's so difficult to make reservations????? Nothing special. A lot of people, very noisy.... would not come back.
K. A.
Great restaurant with fantastic food and friendly staff.
I. F.
Enjoyed the reception, good food, good variety of drinks
J. M.
Good lunch menu price, and food is good! Service felt a little rushed and the order wasn't quite right. Overall tho a good option!
l. l.
Excellent atmosphere - delicious food. I had a Christmas turkey and a bannofe as a dessert - the bannofe was excellent - I highly recommend it ! The turkey was ok, a friend though thought that was dry. The only observation is that a waiter took my plate while I was still eating (almost finished though) and without asking me , and I was quite surprised about this!! Nevertheless overall the waiters were very polite and the service excellent. I recommend that you pay a visit to this restaurant to have a taste of the Scottish gastronomy.
M. W.
Excellent quality of food, price is exceptionally reasonable for a 2-course lunch. Great atmosphere as well.
A. C.
Very nice food! I had the pigeon starter and the cauliflower Mac and cheese for mains... Good prices, tasty food!
N. G.
The service team were fantastic, the food was absolutely delicious!
Highly recommended!
J. O.
Great restaurant, great prices & fab staff! Ross, our waiter was brilliant! Highly recommended 👌
S. M.
Exceptional and friendly service.
Food was not bad.
Overall OK
L. R.
Lovely food and service. Great gluten free selection too.
A. D.
Easy to book online and great location close to where we were staying (Princes Street Suites). The staff were very friendly. The restaurant is well laid out and decorated nicely. They follow all the correct covid guidelines too. The food was really good. Would highly recommend.
P.
Mackeral pâté was really good, insufficient crackers to eat it with though. The beef casserole was a small portion and was sub par unfortunately. We would have ordered a dessert but after waiting 15-20 mins for a menu we gave up and left! The building & ambience is v nice, and the staff were friendly when they were around.
S. B. C.
Had a gorgeous meal at Howies, which was made all the more special by our server Dean. My husband and I came in keen to try some Scottish classics and we were not disappointed. I have coeliac and was spoiled for choice on the gluten free menu. My husband had the haggis and casserole, while I went for the Cullen skink and venison. Everything was excellent and we were well looked after by Dean. He was very attentive to my allergy and took great care to ensure everything was safe for me. By the time dessert came around we got a slice of their famous Banoffee pie and a gluten free ice cream sundae for me. At the end of the meal, we each got a bit of hospitality in the form of some Scottish shortbread (they even had a gf version for me!) The food is excellent and the attention to detail really sets Howies apart from the rest. We will be back again soon!
D. M.
Absolutely stunning meal. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Highly recommended. Service was excellent, will definitely visit again.
A.
Went there without a reservation for New Year and they accommodated us, thanks!! Set menu was really great!
T. N.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and good service. Great for a date!
N. T.
Fantastic restaurant. Amazing service. Beautiful food and drinks. I'll definitely be returning!
A. G.
First time in Edinburgh since going Gluten and Dairy free so was delighted to find a good range on the menu that I could have (even a gluten reduced beer). Food was tasty, ambience was great (especially as it was midweek), service was excellent and we were made to feel welcome (which is not always the case with a 2 year old)
C. N.
Beautiful setting with excellent food, offering great value for money. The service was also quite friendly and appropriately attentive.
B. D.
Great menu, friendly staff, highly recommended.
S.
This restaurant is fabulous! The food is delicious, well presented and perfectly seasoned. The Haggis starter and fillet steak main were delicious And the skin on fries are the best I’ve tasted!
w. c.
Excellent!! Superb food and the service from every staff member was exemplary from the second we walked through the door - 10 out of 10 on all counts! The added touch of a celebratory glass of bubbly for our wedding anniversary was much appreciated!! We'll be back again soon!
J. L.
Food was excellent, so was the service. Lovely outdoor seating area, the food was quick and delicious.
Josh was our waiter for the evening and was fantastic !
Definitely worth the visit during your stay in Edinburgh
L. M.
Lovely Restaurant food nice but its the same stuff everytime you go. Could choose what I'm having before I get there
A. H.
What a find! Delicious food, great atmosphere and fantastic value. We will be back.

Beautiful food with a Scottish twist, great atmosphere and excellent service!

Beautiful Georgian setting, attentive, but not fussy staff.
Well organised for COVID and I felt really safe.
The lunch menu was excellent with a large choice of Scottish food. The cost was very reasonable.
We brought our own wine.

A. A.
Excellent service and really good food. I can recommend the Cullen Skink and the venison. Both were very good. The haggis looked good too. Lovely venue. Altogether top notch
S. G.
Excellent food at a reasonable cost. Staff were welcoming, friendly, and handled the number of diners efficiently. Would highly recommend
C. R.
The menu is not huge, but the food is excellent. The dishes do have a local element which is very good and also some good wines are available. Couldn't fault the service either
D. B.
Delicious meal, as ever, great value and excellent service
C. M.
Fab food, great service and beautiful interior! Only missing a star because there are very limited veggie options - a salad and risotto. The risotto was nice, but I feel like it’s a bit of a cop out !
M. H.
Fantastic meal at Howies. Nice relaxed atmosphere, will definitely be back 👌
C. K.
Supberb! Food was delicious. Service by waiter Eduard was tops.

Came for Christmas Dinner and it exceeded all expectations
Lovely spot, attentive staff and great food

Beer is a bit steep, for a small bottle, but absolutely brilliant service, food & ambience. Would recommend to anyone. 10 out of 10.

Now this is what you expect from a modern loo.. Clean modern, good hand dryer a nice place to visit for 5 mins.
The toilet actually felt more modern than the rest of the building, which is a good thing by the way. Nice highly polished tiles round the hand basins, toilets clean and a Dyson hand dryer to finish things off. However, I do wonder about the vertical down hand dryer, surely in no time the water from your hands will soak the floor and walls, watch this space; another visit in 6 months.
OK, so the colours were a bit odd, blueish, red floor, dark brown wood, grey backsplash and black basins but 5 stars for the Loos.. Bravo..
Remember, you’re only as good as your toilet.
d. d.
Service was excellent, food was quite good, we had beef casserole, but the veg was really too raw. I appreciate the value of not overcooking veg, but this was undercooking, and not palatable. I felt the appearance outside was appealing and promised a good place to eat. The inside lacked any real ambience, it felt hollow (because of such a high ceiling, which was amazing tho). The wooden floor was dark, and the tables were dark and looked tired. It promised a lot initially, but I did not enjoy the experience.
V. F.
Great service and good food.
It was very busy during our visit but the food and service were good.
S. M.
Reasonably good food , service was great as well. Just didn’t think it had that something extra *
Just to clarify because the reply seems a bit misleading . It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the meal . I did it was a good meal . I just didn’t think it was that exceptional * to warrant a 5 🌟
K.
Good ambiance and as good as Scottish food gets. Would definitely recommend.
K. S.
Food was good but portions a bit small. Try the haggis neeps & tatties! Service was great!
R. B.
excellent location right by Calton Hill, and the food was delicious with a variety of options. Everything on the menu looked amazing. Staff were really friendly, and the restaurant followed all the Covid precautions. The time to receive our food was a bit slow (but there were a number of big parties at the same time).
H. A.
Howies is by far one of the best restaurants in all of Edinburgh. They catered superbly for my coeliac diet and when told it was a special 30th birthday occasion, we were given 3 lovely glasses of bubbly! The casserole was 10/10! Marcel our waiter was excellent and made our dining experience out of this world!
A. Y.
Discovered by accident, a great place to done for traditional Scottish dishes with offers on 2 courses for early dining.
Absolutely loved the Cullen Skink and Venison.
L. G.
Lovely building, great food, friendly and brilliant service!
Y. D.
Loved the food, the Scottish hake and the haggis were the best part of our meal. Very nice atmosphere, the dining hall is great and friendly/welcoming staff. Definitely recommend
K. M.
This is a fantastic place to eat. Amazing food, fabulous setting and great value for money. Can't speak highly enough of this restaurant. Top notch without top notch prices.
I. C.
Fab restaurant - fully booked on a Thursday evening in November tells its own story !! Food and service was excellent - sensible wine prices - recommended !!
S. L.
A great restaurant offering lovely scottish food. Well worth a visit
D. E.
We had our Christmas Day lunch here. Everything was perfect and the service and food exceptional.
G. R.
the food was lovely . was with a party of 10 . it was a bring your own bottle . 2 of us didn't drink wine . I was the driver so soft drinks for me . I brought my own cola and was told I couldn't drink it . the other non wine drinker was told he couldn't drink his own drink . so what's the difference between wine and other drinks ??? not very happy . sadly I won't be back . only ok if your a wine drinker !! not ok .
A. B.
My parents renewed there vows and then we had our lunch at Howie's and it was absolutely fantastic. We had a private room and the staff were brilliant. The food was outstanding. I had the lobster and it was so tasty. If you have a chance check this restaurant out it was superb.
A. B.
Beautiful venue, due to a menu error we got given an old copy of the menu with salmon that wasn’t actually being served that day. However we requested it anyway and they did it for us, food was lovely and would recommend the vegetarian haggis. Staff also very friendly. A lovely evening was had!
L. E.
Best Christmas meal ever. Might need to go back again if it's not fully booked up
M. W.
As always a fantastic, varied menu and great food from start to finish. In these difficult times please support the best of our local restaurants and make sure you turn up!!!
P. R.
Great food in a great building - staff always friendly and helpful. Have been going to the various Howie's since they opened many years ago. Always worth the visit....
A. D.
Half way between a fine dining and casual, byobooze between sunday-thursday makes this a fantastic midweek date night, food is excellent using Scottish produce, well presented in small-medium portion sizes, my partner and I throughly enjoyed our 2+ hours spent with Howies this evening! Will definitely recommend
J. C.
Amazing dinner!! Super friendly staff who were very welcoming. All the food was incredible - from the casserole, to the lamb and the grilled chicken - we were all extremely impressed with presentation as well as flavours. Would highly recommend.
P. C.
Absolutely delicious food
Very lovely and friendly staff!
We went there for a second time the next day!
B. K.
The 3 Course Lunch is a bargain. The food is excellent. Loved the haggis
J. B.
Fantastic staff and beautiful building. The food was presented very well, and a great choice of fresh food. We found that the food was just slightly under seasoned, but it was still one of the best restaurants we've been to in Scotland!
B. T.
Excellent Food & Service.
Very friendly staff, the Haggis is amazing !
A. W.
Loved the atmosphere here. Great for a reunion.
T. M.
Friendly staff, and good food using Scottish products.
K. W.
Great location, food and fantastic staff. Really great service for recent special birthday lunch much delayed due to Covid. Can't praise staff highly enough in these difficult times.
A. K.
Very nice restaurant with a good atmosphere and good food. Very friendly staff!
G. h.
Great starter & dessert, but my main was disappointing. All the other diners seemed content, so kept quiet. Who wants to be the only one to spoil a party by moaning?
E. T.
Excellent service, lovely food and great place. I was worried it would be too formal, but was made to feel very comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. BYOB is an excellent idea. The corkage is a little expensive but understandable, and it makes having a fine dining experience a little more financially feasible for those travelling on a budget. Will definitely be back, thank you
S. M.
Reasonably good food , service was great as well. Just didn’t think it had that something extra * …
J. S.
Great staff and fabulous food will be back soon 😊

The BEST food in Edinburgh!👌🏻

Food was to die for. Staff amazing. Will be booking a table for December.
V. B.
Lovely food
The Lofthouse wine was excellent
We will be back again when we visit Edinburgh
D. S.
Excellent food and very efficient, friendly staff.
P. T.
Howies was absolutely amazing Friendly staff good food
G. B.
The good: I’ll start off by stating that the staff were absolutely wonderful and so were the desserts. To finish our meal we had the banoffee pie and sticky toffee pudding and they were absolutely wonderful. I would gladly stop in here again if someone wanted coffee and dessert.
The ok: I had the beef casserole and it was fine but I don’t have much more to say about it than that.
The underwhelming: My wife had a ribeye and asked for a warm red center but it came out medium well - barely even any pink. It also wasn’t very flavorful. If we end up going back for a meal, she said she would definitely have the fish next time.
L. D.
Some of the best food I've eaten in Scotland. Besides that, the historic building this restaurant is in is absolutely beautiful and the staff were great.
J. H.
Very good vfm, if a little busy with ladies-who-lunch (as long as prosecco's involved) and tourists.
But then the very good vfm is likely to result in this..
NB the BYO policy with £5 corkage is very welcome...
T. B.
This place is very good. Friendly service, punctual delivery of well cooked food, good value and great quality, recommended.
I. T.
Great food, wonderful service! Visited for the early dining menu on a Monday so it wasn’t busy but can imagine the place is full at the weekend. The service was great and they were very accommodating for my allergy. Locally sourced food at a reasonable price, in a beautiful setting. What more could you want?
W. K.
Delicious food. Seriously honestly delicious. Great service too. Smaller portions than most restaurants, which isn't a problem though because it's still so filling and delicious and you don't eat until you feel awful. Because of that you probably won't have any leftovers (which isn't necessarily a bad thing either), but there are strange and irritating problems with that. Firstly, the food is expensive - not terribly so, and you could argue that the quality warrants the price - but the portions are very small for the payout. Secondly, they actually have a restaurant policy that no food leaves the establishment. No to go boxes, no leftovers, no takeout. The only reason we found out about the policy is that the food was so good we both wanted to get something for a person who wasn't there with us, but were informed we couldn't do that. Food and service were good enough for 5 stars. 4 stars for portions, prices, and the large stems from the seasoning in our entree that were inedible. 3 stars for the no takeout policy. 7/10 would recommend.

Howies is a first class restaurant with a varied menu of mainly fresh Scottish produce offering a very reasonable fixed price for two or three course. Friendly staff, attentive service and highly recommended!

We travelled up to Edinburgh as a surprise to celebrate my brother's 80th. birthday at Howie's. They were kind enough to help with the organisation.
The service and food was top class , nothing was too much trouble. I only wish we had a Howie's in Wales.
Thank you to everyone who helped make our celebration so special.

A local suggested me trying their haggis and there I went. I was lucky enough to get a place without reservation and could enjoy their service and meal.
M. B.
It was nice. Attractive looking small restaurant. Simple menu but cooked well and presented nicely. Prices were reasonable. Staff attentiveness was sufficient, although not the warmest. An award on the door read "Square Meal Award 2014". That really does some it up. Very pretty versions of very simple meals, cooked with good technique. Much enjoyed.
A. N.
Had the haggis and local catch of the day. Have to say that it was the best food I have had in the UK. 10/10 will eat again!
D. G.
I was fortunate to get a table for two without booking. The food was excellent, and I hope the next time I go there, I'll be able to have wine with my meal. Very much value for money
L. C.
Best set lunch I have had in a while :-)
S. P.
Excellent food, we tried a few unusual recipes that were just great and sit on the menu next to more traditional things. Loved it from starter to cake, the place is beautiful, not loud and service was friendly and with good care for details. Very good value for price, would definitely recommend it and I will be back.

Amazing restaurant, I came two days in a row. Their 35 days aged ribeye steak is my favourite. The desserts are all really tasty too. Highly recommended!

We met for a family celebration and were not disappointed. The service was fantastic with very attentive, helpful and friendly staff. The food was impeccable. We had booked for the 2 course deal and then half of us opted for a 3rd course because everything had been great and we were so relaxed, even in the Covid restrictions and ambience. My (reluctant to leave his Xbox) 13 year old has decided this is his new favourite restaurant declaring the haggis the best he ever had and his chicken main was so good he even ate the capers I’ve been uselessly encouraging him to eat for years. I don’t think the sticky toffee pudding touched the sides of his mouth he wolfed it down so happily. I had the exquisite cold Lobster starter followed by a perfect lamb main (both supplements but worth it). The Pinot Grigio was great too. My parents brought their own wines with very reasonable corkage. All in all I couldn’t and wouldn’t want to fault our visit and will definitely return. Thoroughly recommended
L. B.
Delicious lunch. Exceptionally friendly service
M.
We had dinner here the last night of our stay in Edinburgh and I have to say that it was absolutely fantastic. The staff was great, very friendly and quick service. The food not only looked mouth watering but tasted amazing too. I will definitely go again! I would recommend booking a table in advance, though, which can be done really easily via their website.
H. F.
This appears to be a very popular restaurant with tourists. The atmosphere is pleasant and the haggis tasted very good. We don't usually eat large portions of food, but we found the portion sizes here to be rather small and the food (except for the haggis) not that exciting for the price.
G. W.
Excellent food, all covid precautions were not obvious as such. They have gone the extra mile and it shows. Staff were very attentive and we will definitely be back
T. P.
Good menu, food is well cooked and well presented. The waitresses that served us were both pleasant and helpful. We had a lovely time and I'm looking forward to going back again
R. T.
Amazingly friendly staff, great with young patrons. Food was sublime, it's not every restaurant that has a perfect peppercorn sauce!
J. H.
Howie's is in Waterloo Place beyond the East end of Princess Place and an excellent place for lunch and dinner.
Good food and excellent service.
A.
Definitely the nicest salmon I've ever had, the food was really beyond fantastic, cooked perfectly with a really short wait time. The atmosphere is really lovely and calm, no loud music and tables are well spaced in a beautiful clean dining room.
What I really appreciated was how pleasant and friendly the staff were and especially how mindful they were of my mum's allergies. My mum has a few allergies and is always very anxious and self conscious about "making a fuss" in restaurants but the staff were very reassuring and kind and made sure that her lunch was safe for her to eat. We'll definitely be coming back when we can, mum's got her heart set on Howie's for her 50th birthday next year.
There was very good access to hand sanitiser, all the staff were wearing face masks, the pin pad was sanitised before taking a payment and they had put in place a clearly marked and explained one way system around the dining room. Can't recommend enough! Thanks Howies!
S. P.
Had booked table..bit disappointed put into the private room as very little atmosphere there compared to main room.(.could do with refurbishment.).
Meal was fine..great value..service ok..everyone seemed bit to busy to be fully attentive.. had to ask for bill twice..might just be sign of these times and being in other room..
(Private room ok if using for own party..obviously with eat out deal on and the distancing rules was needed for normal use..)
A. C.
Absolutely excellent. Charming and helpful service. Delicious food... Imaginative, tasty and beautifully presented.
L. M.
Lovely food and very accommodating. The produce is always delicious and fresh and the staff are always very attentive. I usually get nervous eating out with my allergies but this restaurant has always been spot on.
I. C.
Attended a private party. Staff very attentive. A good selection of food. Good quality and service
I. C.
Really tasty food and friendly staff. Not easy these days with the COVID measures but the team were doing everything they could to make the evening normal and pleasant.
They succeeded! The Haggis neeps n tatties started was insane 👌🏽
P. C.
Great service, attentive staff ( not overbearing), good food and nice ambience
K. B.
Delicious food, even more delicious cocktails ... I recommend the bramble ... beautiful atmosphere and excellent service
K. B.
Great atmosphere, food choices and service. Great lunch venue and very reasonable prices in good location.
S. W.
I had the best haggis of my life, my girlfriend had the best salmon of her life - but we also paid the most amount we ever have done in our lives for tonic water.
K. B.
Howies Restaurant is part of a franchise, but you don't have the feeling that it is when you go eat there. Inside the restaurant here is a nice atmosphere and staff is very professional. There are even staff members that speak French. The food is just delicious and I think you get more than you pay for, which is rare. I had the haggis, the casserole of the day and the famous Howies banoffee pie and they were just brilliant. Definitely a place I will go back when I am in Edinburgh.
G. P.
Went for lunch and couldn't fault it. Three courses for 15 quid was great value with nice fresh ingredients. Food was of good quality and a nice portion size, not too little not too much. Service was decent, no complaints at all. You will do well to find a better value meal of that quality in Edinburgh.
I. W.
Lovely little restaurant at the East end of Princes Street... Good food selections with a few daily specials options... very popular and booking is recommended for busy times...
Everything is made to order and cooked fresh, including the burgers, which on our visit were venison and bacon!!!
5 minute walk to Waverley train station.
Good customer service.
Clean restaurant and an ambient atmosphere.
M. H.
Great restaurant serving lots of traditional Scottish food, we were all really happy with our choices! I can recommend the Cullen skink, the Haggis Neeps and Tatties and the Apple crumble with sultanas soaked in whisky. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
S. J.
Good food but service was a little slow.
J. M.
Really great place to eat before sunset, with excellent food, service and space. After sunset, it's a short walk up the hill to the observatory for spectacular views over the city. The staff is very accommodating to families and were simply wonderful with our large group. Highly recommended!
M. R.
Had a delicious wedding dinner. Enthusiastic service and a great selection of food and drink options.
F.
Howie's coffee is decent. Can't comment on the food unfortunately. Maybe next time!
S. K.
A lovely experience even on a busy Saturday night. Very good service and excellent food. It worked just right for a fun evening with friends. Great care taken by the waiter in looking after my gluten free preference. Will visit again.
J. H.
The food was very good, cooked in good time, presented very well and a simply amazing taste. Unfortunately the staff couldn't match the caliber of the great food. When we were ordering, the waitress could not understand my friend who has a (mild) Yorkshire accent. As well as this at the end of our meal, we were very hastily brought the bill and asked how we wanted to pay, which implied that the staff there wanted us out of the restaurant, which was busy, no way near full.
k. l.
What a wonderful place, great food and service. 👍
J. K.
Very tasty, but if you are hungry, order starters
J. K.
Good atmosphere. Good food and you can take your own wine
M. M.
Great food, quick service and true to their word - tasty! Kid friendly too :)
M. T.
Good good, manageress...extremely rude! Obviously she is in the wrong job!
C. J.
Nice spacious restaurant with good covid distancing and screens between tables. Good atmosphere and menu.
펭. J.
Food was delicious, staffs were very friendly and helpful:) fully recommended! If I had a one more chance, I would like to visit there again!! Thanks for good lunch:)
K. D.
The food is incredible, the setting and ambience follow this perfectly. (Edited) I had thought the staff were inattentive at first but as soon as the place got busier they were fantastic if a little blunt at times. We had the lunch menu, haggis/mackerel salad/chowder(sorry, I forget the correct name for this) for starters and all were delicious. For mains we had the salmon/burger/venison casserole. All delicious again, but if anything, a little too big for our admittedly small stomachs. We struggles to finish all so dessert was a no go. Overall, very impressed indeed.
J. S.
Great staff and fabulous food will be back soon 😊
A. M.
Lovely food, beautiful restaurant, friendly server, but weird paintings. Lol Totally recommend getting there before 630pm for the 2 courses deal!! Fish dishes and venison (casserole of the day) very tasty.
R. M.
I would like to thank all the staff at Howies Waterloo place who made our wedding reception extra special on 14 June 2019. We booked the Calton room for our reception for 23 people. The staff listened to our requests and when we arrived in the evening, the table was set, cake ready and all our guests had been seen to. The room looked beautiful. The food was amazing, from the canapes, all the way through to dessert. Service was spot on throughout. We will be back! :)
P. S.
Absolutely lovely meal and the staff were very welcoming highly recommend this restaurant 😀
B. N.
Food was to die for. Staff amazing. Will be booking a table for December.
J. D.
Weekend visit to Edinburgh, had a lovely meal. Fish was excellent and servtwas good. Highly recommended

Excellent lunch menu and great value. Very good service.

It was the best place to go in Edinburgh for great food, service and total experience with a fair price. The menu covers all bases including vegan. They were happy to modify meals to suit. Definitely will go back when in Edinburgh. (From Australia)
D. B.
Value for money. Service fantastic, priced right and beers were cold.
S. M.
Absolutely wonderful food and the staff were superb
E. R.
Really lovely risotto cake with bursts of coriander and a perfectly poached egg.
A. S.
Lunch at Howies today was first class. From the seared pigeon breast, to the salmon and ratatouille and finishing with the hot fudge sundae it was first class all the way. Excellent service too with all servers genuinely pleased to serve you and nothing was too much trouble. We didn't feel rushed at all unlike some restaurants I have been in. The value is unbelievable - I will certainly be back - soon.
P. 1.
Lovely food at reasonable prices for Edinburgh though small portions. Great for casual dining.
J. H.
I've been to several of Howies restaurants. I'm always impressed with the food and have a pleasant experience. The real reason that it gets 5 stars from me is that we came here for a birthday party, a very large group, a late reservation in every sense (I think we booked the day before and for about 10 or 11 at night). The staff were excellent about the whole thing, didn't chase us out despite it getting late and still made us feel welcome. It was a super night all round.
P. J.
First class. Amazing staff, food, value. Great vegan options!
K. S.
Always a pleasure to dine here 👍😁
M. W.
The food was tasty, there just wasn't much of it. For the price, I expected larger portions.
B. K.
Great food, nice atmosphere
L. H.
Wonderful space with high ceilings that gives a feeling of elegance. We were with a group in a separate room. Food was served promptly (which doesn't always happen with a group). Veggie haggis starter was delicious, main of salmon was beautifully cooked, chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream dessert was very good (and not too sweet). Portions not large but then I can make it to dessert. Varied wine selection. We're not talking haut cuisine but classic ingredients well prepared. I wasn't so hot on the bread, but I'm a bit of a bread "snob".
B. M.
Great restaurant with seasonal dishes along side traditional fare, with reasonable prices. We visit here a few times a year
S. K.
Really excellent restaurant offering great food at affordable prices in a lovely historical building. Highly recommended!
K. G.
Absolutely beautiful food and fantastic service, would highly reccomend for any foodies out there
I. B.
Very good food, staff very polite and friendly. Highly Recommend. Great menu.
S. I.
Gorgeous food, friendly staff and an atmospheric place. A strong recommendation!
C. S.
Thoroughly enjoyable Xmas lunch. Simple food cooked and served well.
A. M.
Fantastic food in comfortable surroundings. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable with regards to food on offer. Would highly recommend the seared salmon with thai noodles.
O. L.
Great quality food and the lunch menu is an amazing deal. We had the Scottish classics (haggis, killen skink) and they were all delicious & perfectly presented. Friendly & attentive staff desipite it being very busy.
C. B.
I ordered lamb, and it was really good, and fast. The wait staff were pleasant, but too busy give full attention. I decided to go elsewhere for dessert. Reservations highly recommended.
C.
Lovely food and friendly staff
E. G.
Fantastic goldfish bowl of gin, and delicious mix of traditional and local foods, interestingly cooked and combined.
V. R.
Everything's good. The staff were polite and friendly. Excellent food, great price, good location and a beautiful and pleasant environment.
J. M.
We had the set menu and it was great value for the money, with a lot of different options to choose. The venue is beautiful, spacious and bright. Service was very friendly. Highly recommended.
A. r.
Such a nice find right in the heart of the city. The food was delicious would definitely recommend to anyone. Definitely will be going again when I next visit the city
A. M.
Great service and delicious food!
G.
Good food, really nice quality. Well cooked and well presented.
We did not restrict ourselves to the WW {winter warmers} menu,
and it was still great value. If you fancied what was on the WW menu,
it would be excellent value. Only in auld reekie for a couple of days,
but may well be back there.
P. C.
If food was all Howie's had going for it, it'd still be five stars. Fortunately the staff are phenomenal and the building is extraordinary. A must visit for anyone happy with the prices.
A. L.
A party of 6 of us at this quaint restaurant at the heart of Edinburgh. Ordered an array of food from soups to venison to their fish.
On a generalist note, slightly on the salty side. The fish was neither here or there (but very tasty) and the soups were, meh?!
What stood out from the many dishes we all tried were the mussels and the venison haunch. Mussels were fresh and sweet, sauce absolutely AMAZING. Venison haunch cooked to perfection (medium rare).
However, the best dish of the night was definitely the venison casserole (special of the day). My my my, I didn’t know meat can be that tender, I can loose all my teeth and still eat that! Sauce was on a wee bit salty side but certainly forgiven.
Whilst the food deserves a 4.5 / 5. Service and ambience of the restaurant somewhat let down what could be amazing. Staff members all looked too hectic making me feel like I should just leave them alone (there were around 8-10 tables dining during my time there). Service can be slightly inconsistent with one staff member being great and the other being hmmm... okay.
All in all, a good experience.
Will I come back again. Yes!
K. N.
Nice restaurant short walk from train station. Good choice set menu for lunch. Restaurant was busy with nice atmosphere. Gin and tonic came ready mixed, would have preferred separate tonic to mix personally.
J. G.
First visit and delighted with the experience. Will certainly return at some point. Lovely food and a decent menu selection. Reasonably priced so all in all, very satisfied.
C. K.
Lovely ambiance. Always busy and vibrant atmosphere. The menu has a wide range of dishes and the staff are attentive and friendly.
S. M.
Good food. Service very good especially as there was 30 off in our group. However the service charge was rip of. Please beware there added service charge to every thing even if you payed at the bar yet known the meal. It was 20 % this spoilt the whole experience. They need to make it clear up front as it caused confrontation at the end of the meal
E. S.
Delightful meal, decent portion sizes & friendly, helpful staff
L. M.
We sat outside and service was a little slow but we were happy to sit in the sun and wait. Food fantastic quality and great value for money. We had the haggis, neeps and tattis and pigeon, calamari and a burger with a beer and our bill was only £30 thanks to their lunchtime deal.
R. C.
The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was superb — best service/food we had our entire stay in Edinburgh. Thoroughly enjoyed every second, come here to try the Haggis and the Cullen Skink.
B. H.
Delicious food. Great service.
J. C.
Lovely meal, good service
S.
The venue is attractive and the service is lovely. The prices are moderate and the meal was good value.
M. S. W.
Great atmosphere and good food served very quickly. The deals are great as well. I always visit Howie’s when I am in Edinburgh and go for the haggis and the catch of the day. The location of this particular branch is also excellent.
C. G.
We really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was good, the presentation, the service, ... everything was great. Even the price, they have a cheap lunch menu. We will come back!
a. b.
Great service/team and food was delicious. Also, served great cocktails, top marks!
J. G.
Christmas lunch menu was good and not too expensive, but watch out for the extras. Wasn't surprised at a charge for bottled water on the tables but bread, dips and olives while we waited for the meal - most restaurants I've been in these are complementary
G. C.
Great food! Our server Murphy was simply amazing! Super friendly, smiling at all times! Quality and price wise are really astonishing!
S. B.
The staff and service are brilliant. Food is expensive in comparison to more centrally located restaurants.
N. T.
Booked for four instead of six - staff were great despite place being very busy. Had new table for us 40 mins later. Food and service were excellent ! Great atmosphere and very busy.
T. M.
As this was basically next door to our hotel and it was bucketing down we decided to give Howies a try . Its a very spacious room which was a Georgian era dining hall with a raised area at the far end from the bar and we were given our table from one of the 2 young waitresses who were excellent all night. The food was tremendous , I had the Cullen skink followed by the Chicken casserole in lentils and the gf had the beetroot carpaccio with the grilled salmon to follow all washed down with excellent wines all at a very reasonable cost for a city centre restaurant . Service was very good with the young staff being attentive and interested, well recommended if in the east end of Princes St.
J. M. A.
Very nice place to have lunch or dinner. Good food at a reasonable price. The menu is quite limited, bit all good quality food. The service is pretty nice too.
B. R.
Amazing!! I've been several times before and I absolutely love the place.
The service is amazing as is the beautiful food.
Thank you Howies😉
J. M.
Burger was delectable, the taste was delicate yet meaty. Desserts were fantastic. Only thing it was missing were more Scottish dishes. The haggis on offer was average.
J.
Best sticky toffee pudding in Edinburgh, we’ve tried 3 other ones. Prices are great for the food and place. Lunch menus are a steal.
V. B.
Lovely food
The Lofthouse wine was excellent
We will be back again when we visit Edinburgh
H. M.
Great food and really helpful and friendly staff! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for local food cooked to perfection at a reasonable price.
D. S.
Excellent food and very efficient, friendly staff.
A. H.
Possibly the most perfect eating experience of my life !! Staff were faultless , orders taken promptly and mega friendly All the food was outstanding Prices very reasonable for a big city Just cannot fault anything at all
B. “. F.
A warm atmosphere and delicious Cullen skink
J. w.
Gorgeous room, Cullen Skink to die for, best mocktail of this lockdown only drawback...you'll wish the staff were your best mates..they are so lovely.
M. w.
Visited recently on trip to city and have difficulty with dietary issues but found staff to be so helpful it made it a pleasure to eat here . Of course the fantastic meal we had just added to the enjoyment . Would give more stars if I could
Q. H.
Stumbled upon this place and am thrilled I did. The food is very good. Quality ingredients and upscale presentation but for very reasonable prices. Plenty of options and good service.
J. G.
Although our lunchtime was very busy the food and service were excellent. Interesting menu and good sized portions.
C. L.
Popular lunch spot. Make a reservation, though they were nice enough to squeeze us in without one. Hot celeriac soup shrugged off the chilly morning, and the pan sautéed hake was delicious.
M. W.
Great restaurant, food fresh with a lovely menu with Scottish favourites and good value for money. and covid9 friendly. And helpful staff.
l. f.
Excellent food. Great to catch up..
Service brilliant..and felt very safe.
H. S.
Great traditional food, excellent service and friendly staff..the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties was the best thing I had in Edinburg.. We also enjoyed the Cullen Skink a lot.. Highly recommended
F. B.
Great place for food . Great atmosphere Always very memorable. Always 5 star scottish food. Previous mistake only came up 2 stars. So re posting. One of my favourite places to visit when in Edinburgh .
M. (.
Food was great but "2course for 15" deal is a ripoff. Pretty much every main is an extra £4 on top and the total price becomes horribly too much. Just go an eat at other prestigious places like "angles and bagpipers" and see price difference
F. V.
One of the best food I ever eaten me and my friends in Edinburgh, lovely place with a lovely and nice staff 🥂🙂🥳
J. B.
Thank you for a wonderful lunch which made my husbands 70th Birthday. Your private dining is a great venue, the food was 1st class and all the staff were very efficient and welcoming
A. H.
A good experience overall. The staff were lovely and great chat. The food was fine as well, although a touch on the expensive side. Would still recommend.
