Reviews of Royal Dornoch
M. H.
Had a wonderful day at Royal Dornoch. The starter was great, weather cooperated and the course was in great condition. 1 of my favorite courses that we played around Inverness.
D. K.
Beautiful location, stunning scenery, what's not to like. Amazingly well kept, all staff very helpful, especially David the starter (sorry about the first 2 tee offs!!). Lovey pack with course guide, leather wallet etc. Course is hard but not too much so, even a high handicapped golfer can get round ok. Seems like every hole has a beautiful view.
C. R.
World's 3rd oldest course its a beautiful course with so many tricky holes. Like so many links you have to battle the weather and avoid the bunkers to shoot well. Preferred the front to the back nine. Last hole was a little underwhelming but was very honoured to have played this course.

Simply the finest, most challenging and rewarding golf I have experienced. Well worth the pilgrimage. Could and should host the Open Championship. Would give the best players in the world all they want. Visually stunning! Do yourself a favor and go at least once in your life.
s. r.
This is an amazing golf course. Probably the best I have played anywhere in UK.
We were very lucky with the weather but nevertheless the less every hole presents a new challenge and another sensational vista. The course is in immaculate condition and presents a unique challenge with the undulating greens and thick rough.
If you could play one course anywhere, this is it.
It is very popular and attracts many overseas visitors so getting Tee times at affordable prices is difficult.
In addition the town of Dornoch and surrounding areas are beautiful.
There are also numerous great courses near by.
This is golfing heaven
J. S.
If this isn't already on the bucket list of every keen golfer, it should be. One of the best courses in the world, challenging, but fair. Hospitality, on and off the course, is faultless. I would not hesitate to return, given the opportunity.
B. B.
Course was in excellent condition for the time of the year. Surprisingly , once the competition field had gone through the 9th , the Greens staff were out preparing the course for winter. Food and service in the club house was very good. Look forward to returning next year.
J. P. H.
More than the best golf you’ll find, Dornoch and it’s people are the real gems.
T. K.
Golf courses (Champ & Struie) are fantastic. Bartender works very hard but wait staff was rude and incompetent. They ruined our visit. Recommend having post round drinks/food somewhere other than then the club house. Plenty of options in the amazing village of Dornoch.
M. W.
Just absolutely fantastic. The Championship is an amazing place to play, it's in cracking condition a real test but fair and with views that can't be described...now I know why it is rated so highly!
J. C.
If it's good enough Jack it's good enough for anyone. Play it and you'll understand. Incredible!
M. M.
Everything you've heard about this place true! Absolutely mesmerising! Pricey but definitely has to be on your bucket list!
M. C. J.
Home of Donald Ross, designer of over 500 golf courses. Superb layout on coast in Scottish Highlands. A reclusive town of 2500 wonderful folks. Drive there on left side.
B. R.
A classic course with some interesting and fun challenges. Definitely worth having a caddy unless you really know what you're doing. There was some inconsistency in the caddies we had, however. Some definitely felt like they were doing a job, others felt like a bargain.
D. M.
The Championship course is up there with the very best courses you could play anywhere in the world. A must visit course if you get the chance.
J. A.
Quite simply, the best golf course in the British Isles!
P. M.
A must for any golfer that wants a test with great views, stunning place, true Links Golf.
H. M.
Wonderful golf course great food and very friendly staff around great experience
D.
Simply stunning. First time playing the championship course and it was superb. Amazing coastal scenery 👌 …
B. I.
Beautiful course, great caddy’s. just don’t play thru any locals. Joking aside a real high light.
M. M.
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Nearly impossible to provide a high enough rating. As close to a perfect golf experience as you can have.
D. M.
What can I say but wow what a course. If you want to experience a Championship Course then highly recommend it. Go on people it must be on every golfers bucket list 🏌️♂️⛳🏌️♂️⛳🏆🏆🏆 …
S. W.

K.
Superb, can’t find right wording to describe.
A. C.
Clean tidy Village, good to visit if interested in Golf weekends.Walking paths around the two Golf courses with spectacular views across the sandy Dornoch Beach coastline. Also popular with people walking dogs.
B. B.
Looks a fantastic course may play it some time in the near future
N. L.
Beautiful course, gorgeous views with very forgiving fairways. Highly recommended!
S. B.
Always lived the place and still to this day, my favourite course in Scotland!
K. K. A.
Fantastic golf course.
D.
Fabulous golf course. Very friendly place. We lucked out on the weather.
P. C.
Superb golf courses and great views. Played the Struie with my wife and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Greens were in excellent condition given the winter and spring we've experienced.
M. K.
Most amazing place! Best golf course in the world.
D. K.
a world class course with world class views...i could play it every day
R. M.
Immaculate golf, but a poor overall experience. For many years I have visited Sutherland, the north east of Scotland. Many years I have played golf in the richness of this region of the country. Dornoch is the heart beat of all these courses. They are all magical; Brora, Tain, Golspie, Nairn and several others. Tom Morris and James Braid are special men. The locals love golf and they should as outside the Kingdom of Fife, the geography of the R&A - The Old Course, and special courses that litter so much of the country I’ve never played a more splendid course. Royal Dornoch is a beautiful course. Each hole is a joy to play. The last ten years the prices have risen considerably, but at over $200 in the summer months, is it really a great overall experience? Sadly the beauty of the course is where this review stops in its positivity. Ally, our starter for the day, was a gentleman and the pro shop staff where nice enough, if not a little unenthusiastic, but head inside the clubhouse and the attitude and joy for visitors ends. There is a smell of disdain for those of us who are not local, who aren’t American with big dollars who pay to play this wonderful place. The service in the upstairs bar was atrocious, as we waited over 20 minutes to be served, and even with track and trace in place and C19 rules posted on the walls we where uninvitingly told the rules forcefully by our very unfriendly lady server. She didn’t allow us to sit together, moving a chair, even though the room was empty. There where only 5 in our party. Later I spoke to some locals I know, in the town, as I frequent Dornoch regularly over the last 30 years, and almost all of them are very upset with the internal lack of friendliness towards guests. Flamboyant Americans visit here in their droves, and they are lovely folks, but are non foreign Scottish guests not welcome? Is it because we made the trip from the central belt? I am not sure, but Royal Dornoch needs to realize that if they want to be in the same bracket at Turnberry, The Old Course, even resorts such as Gleneagles, which is an experience to remember, the need to train and employ managers and staff who can deliver that experience. Having had the pleasure of several of these courses, plus several in the USA over the years, the course is sensational. But a lack of locker room facilities, many guests lining up outside to start #1 mobbing the practice green and then poor post golf bar service is not going to cut it. The worst part is the staff seem fairly miserable. Please smile and welcome guests who are traveling 4-5 hrs from the nearest large city to play your world renowned course, as you live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Showing it will only make the guests happier! And, by the way we don’t need to be told, and retold the C19 rules. We wore masks and used sanitizer. We signed in. How awkward and unhappy that clubhouse is. I’d be interested to see how many people agree with my synopsis of the club? I hope to be back, and I hope the next time the experience is better as it is the best course I have set foot on. But managers…time to up your game in delivering an experience for the many who visit annually. With C19 we have all learned that traveling is not easy. So its time to get better!
S. H.
Simple, if you like golf then this place is a must. This course is easily in the top 10 courses in UK and even possibly the world, a real challange but just stunning.
W. M.
Excellent Golf course. I would hate to pay full visitor price, but going as a guest is an absolute treat. Greens are just fantastic, huge, undulating & hard to get too! Scenery on a good day is just fantastic.
L. G.
Great course!!!! Wonderful views and people
M. T.
Lovely spot for holiday relaxation, golf, food and local produce
M. D.
Probably the best golf club in the world. Stay at the Links House or Skibo if you are minted. Top draw.
P. C.
Lovely people and an amazing course, one not to be missed if you are in this part of Scotland
S. B.
Absolute must play golf course. I'm fortunate to live in Scotland and have played most of the major tracks but Dornoch is one of my favorites.
D. G.
Amazing golf course, in fantastic condition, fairways and greens in pristine condition, highly recommended 👌 …
M. M.
Didn't play but walked around on public footpaths. This is a fabulous golf course
J. M.
Lovely course but expensive to play
B. B.
Absolutely superb golf course ..get up to dornoch for a game you will enjoy.
S. C.
Fantastic venue from top to bottom. The General Manager was very accommodating and personable! He's very passionate about wine and his recommendations were shot on. We felt very well taken care of overall and we'll be returning!
I. S.
Loved here. Lovely clean beach. Great for walking dogs. Very peaceful. Only there 1 night, will definitely visit again.
M. L.
Our stay in dornoch was very short ...quick visit through dornoch and golspie and had a game of lawn bowls in Tain ...the members here well very friendly made us very welcome ..the caravan site we chose was a very small but friendly one just of the motorway .handy for travelling around this area..sadly we had to go home a day early but will certainly be back next year for a longer stay....
M. K.
I love walking Dornoch golf course as ever time I go it just looks different never 2 days the same. It's also a great course to play always challenging but fair for all golfing abilities 👍 …
J. M.
Stunning course. Love coming back here!
M. M.
Second oldest golf club in the world, stunning (if remote) location, this is the best of the old links courses. And yes - it is better than the Old Course at St. Andrews. That's mot just me being idiosyncratic - check out the golf magazine rankings and you'll see there's a fair concensus on this. Any serious golfer should make the pilgrimage at least once.
J. O.
One of the best in Scotland played both courses there a must for everyone lovely clubhouse staff very helpful had lunch before second round great fish & chips. On the day we played we had the wind with for the first 8 holes from 9 onwards a great test of golf you will use every club in the bag some great par 4’s make sure to bring a 2 iron you will need it
G. H.
I played here a number of years ago. I had heard that Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw always warmed up here the week before the Open when it was held in Scotland. It was almost religious experience for me ! I am a Scot who lives in Vancouver now but I will be back someday. BTW if you're up this way play Tain golf club and visit the Glenmorangie distillery and head down to Nairn golf club , another gem.
T. F.
The grounds looked lovely and lots of people playing golf in the sunshine. It has a good hotel on the grounds as well. A very popular golf course. In a beautiful setting.
E. H.
Beautiful course ...with stunning views. Nice restaurant... friendly staff
D. R.
Golfing experience to remember. One of Tom Watson's favorite courses, and a certain Open site if not so far north. Played with two young locals who wiped the course with me! Enjoyable nonetheless.
A. V.
A stunning golf course. We’re always made to feel very welcome at the club. The macaroni pie is the one! We will be back soon.
A. T.
When the weather is good how can you go wrong with this place.
J. C.
Great golf course, with excellent meet & greet by Michael. Small pro shop but good selection of gear. Friendly staff in the bar/restaurant with views over the course.
R. H.
Incredible attention to detail on the course! Greens, fairways and especially the bunkers are so well mantained! Spectacular views and great reception from the club! Worth travelling so far to play this course!
D. E.
Amazing course, def in my top 5 courses. We paid for a caddie(Derek), who couldnt have been better. Will be back.
J. E.
There's always a friendly welcome in the clubhouse and still a great place for something to eat and drink
A. E.
This special place never looses it's magic, I walked a ways with the guys, the course is in as good condition as I have ever seen it in the last 26 years I have been coming here, what an absolute gem, if you like links golf and the history of the game of golf you won't want to miss this course, and when you go there don't bypass Castle Stuart Golf Links as that is also a bucket play list must, the course is amazing as is the list welcome and the staff, they truly top drawer.
I. S.
We popped in for a drink whilst visiting Dornoch, and the hotel has a fabulous, warm and welcoming atmosphere, nice staff and great views.
A. R.
Classic links..... Congrats to the owners on having a great place and sharing it with us..... well be back for more I am sure.... we were there in August whivh was just great and perhaps will try other times of the year as well......car parking and access is adequate...... also worth checking the area for other economic restaurants.
J. T.
Amazing place to visit and play golf!
P. N.
Best course I've ever played!
S.
One of the top 5 golf courses in the world. No-one was pretentious, the course was magnificent, and our golf not so much. Fantastic place.
c. j.
Excellent friendly service and excellent food.
D. B.
Beautiful golf course, extremely challenging.
D. D.
Dornach is everything they say it is. The greens are sloped brilliantly. There are 18 solid holes. If you do not have a bump game add at least 1 per hole. The best advice is take a caddy.
S. E.
Great course and accommodation.
D. S.
Great hotel with friendly staff
Great food and breakfast
B. M.
Always a great place to bring clients. Never let's you down. Awesome golf and very good food. Can't always garentee the weather but perfect this time.
E. C.
Staff is expert at taking care of needs. Restaurant has great food options.
M. H.
I played Royal Dornoch twice in 2004 with a group of twenty. The first round shot 79 with a rental set. (My clubs showed up a day later) During the first round, my playing partner made an Ace on #11. The bar tab for 20 after with our "caddies" was large. The second round a day later after Brora, was fantastic, rained straight down, gorse blooming a brilliant yellow, shot 76 and didn't want to leave. If I could play one course every day for the rest of my life it would be Royal Dornoch. Our caddies were brilliant!
J. H.
Course was superb but one way up to clubhouse from carpark and then we got a row because the road down was a slippy slope was horrendous if you have walking difficulties , not well thought out.
J. M.
One of my top 3 favorite courses ever. It has everything, including one of the coolest feelings getting ready to tee off ever.
D. A.

35+ years ago I played here The highlight of the day was that a playing companion of mine (Ted C) birdied all four of the par 3's, sight unseen I could play for another 100 years and never see this done again What a pleasure it was witnessing this and wish I had kept a copy of Ted's scorecard

(Translated) GB&I/99, 20220731/88, Royal Dornoch is the most difficult course to book in this trip. There are no visitor seats throughout the year. Members introduced by golfers flew over from Northern Ireland to play a game. Many holes are novel and unique. When I saw the markers of various clubs posted on the wall, I also donated one from Sentosa, Singapore 😃

(Translated) It was a fantastic course. If the old course was rather plain, this place was very diverse.
A long beach right next to it... Deep bunkers on each course...
It's a pity that it's a bit far from St Andrews, but it's a must-visit place for golf enthusiasts.
