Reviews of Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel
s. r.
We booked for the New Year's Eve dinner/dance at the Country Club with overnight stay. The food was lovely and the atmosphere wonderful. The band Accolade played after the meal instead of a disco and were brilliant! The fireworks were really good and we had a lovely evening with a taxi both ways. The hotel bar stayed open late and all the staff were very good. Breakfast was delicious but leave time as all cooked to order and you are waited on which I really like My only criticism would be our room was a little tatty in places but I do understand what a hard time hospitality has had recently.
It was a wonderful experience and I recommend it
J. G.
I had been told about Thorpeness by my golf tour operator, I think he under sold it. The hotel rooms. staff and food were excellent, clean and so comfortable. As for the golf, well I would suggest you have to try it for yourself. We hardly had a speck of mud on us and the inland links / woodland style was a proper test. Having said that we all played it better the second day. Worth every penny of the winter price.
I. P.
Excellent golf as always , especially as we were in between the two big storms ! The big difference however from previous visits was in the restauraunt which provided excellent food and service. The Hotel however in general is now looking tired and needs money spent in particular on the rooms. We stayed in the nicer rooms over the restauraunt .

We found a deal online to stay at Thorpness which included 2 rounds of golf each, a stay at the hotel, evening meal and breakfast. Literally from the very first phone call to Tracy to book the break, the booking out with Laura, the whole experience was fantastic.
The golf course was a challenge and required a steady head was amazing. Now officially the present Mrs. Edwards favourite golf course, has some wonderful holes. The greens were exceptional and the bunkers catching any stray shots.... Just a great golf course.
The hotel room, number 22, was lovely. A shower that looked a bit feeble turned out to be one of the best showers I have had. Plenty of power and lots of hot water. We had the usual facilities in the room from tea and coffee to hairdryers, TV and the bed was very comfortable.
As for the evening meal, we thoroughly enjoyed it but what made the meal was the staff that looked after us. Stevie and Lynn couldn't of done any more for us. They chatted, smiled and above all, and this might be an old man thing, they looked at you while they talked to you. They were polite, attentative and just all round great staff.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend to anyone looking for a nice break be it just to relax and take in the local sights a proper golf break.

I have given this a 4 star mainly due to the golf which was our primary reason for our stay. The course was in great condition for November and a great challenge for my group ranging from 6 handicap to 25. The rooms were good but not sure they should be classed as "superior." Food looked great and sounded great but there were issues but we are not complainers so didn't bother. Even when quiet one of my friends had to breakfast alone due to over 20 minute wait for veggie breakfast. Reception area was generally un-staffed when there which wasn't great. The wait at the bar was quite ridiculous - need more than one person for sure. Overall though - good value for money and based on the golf alone we would definitely return.

A lovely stay at this unique and curious location in one of the UK's first ever holiday villages. Golf course is challenging but enjoyable with a friendly golf shop pro. Delicious regional and seasonal food in Ogilvie's restaurant with great breakfast choices. Lovely views from the outside terrace over the man made lake. Good walk through nature reserve or along the sea to Aldeburgh. If clear overnight the dark sky full of stars is a bonus.

Just had a fantastic weekend at the Thorpness golf and country club. Staff amazing very helpful and friendly. Food was 5 STAR. Best roast Turkey dinner ever had. Cannot recommend high enough. Will be back definitely.
M. W.
Beautiful setting. Surrounded by countryside and lakes and excellent setting for walks. Renowned golf course.
Rooms are mainly in satellite buildings. Rooms in the Lake side are somewhat tired and apparently due for a much needed refurb. Basic hospitality tray - why put Nescafé and PG Tips on a tray when aiming for a high end experience?......
The service was excellent throughout. Bar with a log fire that serves food most of the day. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent. Breakfast was served here as well and great selection of food. Whilst sitting eating breakfast, a deer crossed the golf course close to where sitting, and complimented the experience.
Would go back assuming planned room renovations are completed
C. n.
I recently spent the weekend here and had a fantastic experience thanks to one of the staff members, Ruben, a member of the team, gave me an amazing experience. He was quite helpful and was able to accommodate my requirements and desires in a variety of ways.
P. E.
Course in excellent condition, greens a little bumpy because of hollow tonging to be expected for time of year. Great afternoon golfing with super company,be back soon.🏌️🤗
D. M.
Great place, food and staff we're very good. Golf course looked good, but didn't get time to play. Would go back again 👍
E. M.
Lovely old golf club in a beautiful setting. Staff were friendly. It was very clean with lots of hand sanitizer stations. The room was large and had everything you need. I would have given it 5 stars but taps in bathroom definitely need replacing and bathroom needs updating. Breakfast was excellent. I will come again
J. D.
So stayed here for a night with breakfast included and yep, it's was just fine. Nice people running the place, comfy bed and a warm room.. Was blowing outside with lashing rain but all snug in the rather large room. Shower was hot and powerful which was a bonus.
Agree with others saying its a little old looking in some areas but so what?? So there was a small crack in the sink and a tiny stain on the carpet by the bed... Nothings perfect.
But the location, I'm not a golf player but those in the bar in n the morning loved the course and were out in force even in a rubbish day, profession running the pro shop from 8am and everything looking well cared for.
Short 5 minute walk to the middle of Thorpness, nice pub, two nice cafes and the boating lake. Loads of landmarks to see and a pebble beach to wonder along.
Aldbrugh is 5 minutes away by car so shopping is easy as is finding somewhere to eat if you don't fancy the pub grub at the club or places at Thorpness.
Hint... Drive through Aldbrough, park up on the sea wall, totally safe, and walk back into town. It's free, great views and you just happent to have to go past the best chip shop in Suffolk!
L. A.
The Afternoon Tea we had was really lovely. Had a few Afternoon Teas at the hotel and they have always been lovely. Staff always friendly and helpful
j. D.
Another great stay at this hotel where the staff are so friendly, rooms comfortable, breakfasts gorgeous and location perfect. Thorpeness is like stepping back in time yet is only a short walk to Aldeburgh, great beach and heath walks too.
D. P.
Chose a very wet and windy weekend for our golf trip, but, a lovely time was had by all who went, the course was challenging without being difficult.
Worth a second visit.
P. A.
Great course. Breakfast service very slow.
Lunch service quick and efficient
S. W.
What a beautiful golf club. Just visit even if you don’t play golf. The grounds around the club are stunning. The golf course is excellent, a real challenge.
T. R.
First time visiting not sure what to expect but pleasantly surprised at how well run it was from the golf to the accommodation to the catering to the service all consistently good.
Will be returning.
J. H.
Very nice course. Food was average in the bar. Service was good. Buildings all need redecorating. Very welcoming place for dogs and no issues with having a dog in the bar. In the main restaurant dogs not allowed. 2nd time I have visited here and I am sure I will revisit again.
T. S.
Top class course and decent golf hotel. Recommended for golf breaks, but it's best for good golfers, sub 18 handicap, as the course is difficult (Slope 130).
M. L.
Lovely stay. Perfect location and close to everything we wanted to do. Staff were brilliant and really made our visit. They were welcoming and made us feel so welcome - providing reccomendations for trips as well as remembering our breakfast order!
D. M.
Had a short break here .Good food and a good service. Room was ok .
D. S.
For the second year we had a society golf weekend here. Great food, drink and golf course. Will be back in 2022.
T. D.
The set up at Thorpeness is great with athe golf, the hotel and restaurant all working well together and of high quality.
S. C.
Played while on a golfing trip with friends. Lovely course in a nice part of the country. Would definitely play here again.
S. P.
Very relaxed atmosphere. Great hotel to bring dogs. Staff are very cheerful and helpful.
D. C.
Very good overall experience. Golf course is well maintained and a decent challenge for golfers of all levels, nicely secluded with virtually no road noise, and well situated to play other courses in the area. Excellent breakfast, the golf + DBB is great value. Will definitely be back.
N. W.
Great round of golf today.
I am a golfer with plenty of shape to my game and lost loads of balls but didn't mind as the course was so good.
Had a deal with food involved that was top rate quality.
All in all a course worth trying.
S. R.
Lovely place for me and my best friend John we have played many games over here over the years long may it continue!
S. F.
We had a lovely stay here for a wedding. Staff were lovely - great room service and food. I had to work remotely for a day and the internet held up to many Zoom calls. Would highly recommend!
G. F.
Great hotel, superb breakfast and staff. Very good value for money.
J. M.
A somewhat dated venue in a lovely setting. Good food and simply amazing, attentive, friendly service. Didn’t play the course but it appeared to be well maintained with varied terrain with good opportunities for players of all skill levels.
D. F.
Great course this time of year. Great deals too. Hotel, food and course all good.
R. T.
Nice course loads of bunkers and narrow fairways a good test for our weekend away worth a visit
M. P.
Cosy oldy woldy place good food, very pleasant stay, golf course was testing.
A. M.
Excellent course friendly staff, a happy place.
s. s.
We played Thorpeness golf course on 31st Dec. The staff were excellent in enabling us to play amid the constant restriction changes at that time. Thanks Dan. The course played very well despite very wet weather in the preceding days. The course layout is excellent making you plan your way around the 18 holes.
G. D.
Played the golf course with a group of friends for the first time this week. Beautiful challenging course in good condition despite the adverse weather we have had this spring. Will definitely return!
n. g.
Fantastic stay, beautiful location, good food and drink . . .what more coud you want.
G. P. E.
Our golf groups rate Thorpeness highly: a great combo of a fun course, a good hotel and miles of beach!
J. L.
Excellent facilities for a golfing break, staff very friendly and helpful. Enjoyable golf course in good condition considering the weather which we have endured over the past few months. The quality of the food and service in the dining facilities was very good indeed.
P. M. E.
Golf course is a challenge Summer or winter, currently in good condition, food good but hotel is a little dated and service during COVID needs some improvement.
But still fair value for money at £140each for twin bedded room, breakfast one night stay with 2 games of golf.
t. f.
Lovely place to visit or stay, we had a wedding and part of it was here outside by the lake for drinks view's stunning certainly worth a visit we stayed in Thorpeness for a week and with the tennis courts and golf a great place for a holiday
R. M.
Although frosty and very cold, we had an enjoyable round, the course is lovely on a fantastic bit of land. Once we are able to stay over we will be back for a weekend of golf.
B. B.
Tremendous a must for all golfers.great coarse and lovely clubhouse accommodation tremendous.
M. L.
Tremendous course and great welcome from all the staff. Food was superb so can only recommend a visit.
P. S.
Delicious steak roast Sunday lunch with friends. Very enjoyable.
S. F.
We stayed here for a few days whilst hubby played golf. Absolutely delightful hotel and course. We will be back with all our friends!
S. K.
Beautifully maintained golf course standing up to the hot dry weather well. Holes are a little bit samey with a lot of shortish par 4's. Only a few holes worth taking driver on but thoroughly enjoyed the round of golf.
M. T.
Wonderful facilities rooms are large and roomy en suite shower very pleasant staff. Excellent food. Considering the drought conditions the golf fairways were brown but the greens were in excellent condition, firm, fast and true. I'd recommend this course for the ultimate golfing break. Also you get a good view of the " house in the sky".
T. W.
Excellent staff the rooms could do with a update but the staff make up for that
J. D.
Stayed for 2 nights, good quality food, well cooked. The only problem was that we were pestered by flies. Ok the doors were open around the restaurant to help keep it cool, but fly screens should be placed across them as this is not a new problem according to the staff. Our room though was lovely, even though it was away from the main building. Fortunately the weather was great, but had it not have been, we would have got soaked going for breakfast or evening meal.
N. P.
Always good here but shortage of staff meant meals were a bit chaotic
J. C.
Visited in the summer, hotel rooms are away from the main building, which is fine, unless it's raining, when you will get wet going for breakfast or evening meal, unless you have an umbrella in your room, just in case. With all the doors open in the restaurant, we were plagued by flies, we did make a suggestion of having screening put across the doors but this was dismissed by the restaurant because there were too many doors to cover. The golf course looks amazing and judging by the returning players it must play well. The food was excellent too.
a. d.
Excellent course, friendly, very helpful and welcoming staff.
K. E.
Played the course for the first time Friday 6th March, what a delight to play a course with no mud and standing water after the recent weather and after several hours of rain the previous day and into the early hours. We teed off at 12:04 and were all greatly impressed from the exceptional tees, to superb fairways and greens that were reasonably firm but very receptive, along with a good speed. The course gives the impression of being open but the placement of bunkers and the general landscaping of the gorse bushes, heather and bracken make tee shot accuracy a great benefit. Pro shop and all staff in the bar were extremely helpful and friendly. We played as a three ball and all of us would recommend this club and will be returning again despite the 90 minutes to 2 hour drive from out homes in Essex.
A. S.
Great golf course with some very tricky holes and good views over the Suffolk coast.
P. J.
We had our marriage ceremony and reception here at the Thorpeness Golf Club and everyone agreed that it was a very memorable occasion the food was exceptional the best we have had at any wedding. The golf club hotel is set beside the Thorpeness meare so offering lots of photo opportunity's. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and lovely views overlooking the golf course . The manageress and staff were very attentive topping up drinks and very concerned that we were happy with the food My grandchildren were there and they were very well looked after
I was a bit concerned that the tables would be a bit on the small side but wow no problems there we like wide tables, wide tables seem to set everything of much better To sum up I can thoroughly recommend this venue for weddings
L. S.
Superb heathland golf course, definitely worth a visit, great food washed down with a nice cold amstell what more could you ask for 😊🏌️♂️⛳
B. b.
Came here for a friends wedding, Registrar was very nice and we enjoyed the ceremony. Staff were very friendly and professional. Reception food was exceptional, I really enjoyed the goat cheese salad and Lamb. Even the Canapes were good. Probably the best wedding food I can remember.
L. L.
Stayed here in January and forgot to review! This is a really welcoming, dog friendly hotel, we stayed here with our puppy and the staff were brilliant. Really helpful, friendly and laid back. The rooms were spacious and clean with a homely feel. Would definitely return and recommend 100%
G. B.
If you can find your way to this little jewel of a golf club and hotel then you will be in for a brilliant day. Very challenging course with bunkers seemingly always in the right place to catch a misplaced drive. Greens are as slick as you'll want and after enjoy good food and beverages. Don't pass up the chance if you get it!
M. P.
Had breakfast here before playing 18 holes.
Full English was very nice but at 8.95, you shouldn’t have to pay extra for toast. It should probably also come with a mug of tea or coffee.
Course is excellent. Bunkers have loads of sand, fairways are good and the greens were perfect.
One complaint though is the lack of a water fountain on the course. For the price of the green fees you’d expect this type of detail.
T. T.
I had a lovely family meal out on our last day of our holiday. Exceptional service especially from the barman Jack who was serving everyone with a smile throughout our stay even when it got very busy and he was on his own. The food was great with generous portion sizes and the desserts were especially good!
N. D.
Nice people, course in great condition for the time of year
A. B.
The country walk around the golf course and Thorpeness itself is fabulous. Very relaxing very enjoyable. Highly recommended
M. B.
Recently spent two days golfing with bed, breakfast and dinner included. Room was large and comfortable, food was nicely prepared with an excellent choice. Course was very enjoyable and in reasonable condition considering the recent rain deluge which it had had.
All in all good value and recommended.
D. P.
Amazing venue with friendly and helpful staff. Course plays really well in ALL conditions. No hesitations in recommending this place to small or large groups.
W. M.
Really excellent! I cannot recall a better cooked breakfast, it was superb. It’s certainly better than Claridges or Mandarin Oriental. Our room overlooking the 3rd tee was delightful. Dinner was also very good — delicious bavette, and sticky toffee pudding. A well stocked bar including a selection of Adnams. The golf course was fine and most of the greens were in first class condition. Highly recommended.
J. G.
Enjoyable weekend away. Great base for walks and cycling. Lots of golfers staying so quite busy. Good bar food and restaurant. Room was good. Fun mini golf and rowing on the mere.
C.
Christmas works meal. All in all it was pleasant enough although I wouldn't be in a rush to return. The food was mediocre - starters of prawn salad wasn't seasoned very well; tasted bland. The main meal - the vegetables were put on the table a long time before the plates of food were brought out, so we had cold veg. The meal itself was also cold. The function room was nice as was the coffee, which was thankfully hot!
S. M.
Lovely place, very traditional. Food was delicious, service was superb. Golf course was in excellent condition and quite challenging. I will definitely be visiting again.
k. c.
Had a fantastic time at golf club 2 great singers. Yummy hog roast and watched the fireworks it was a perfect night shared with kids and grandson. Just lovely caring manager and staff would recommend to anyone xx
C. S.
I have now been twice once to play Golf and once to walk the area. It's a quirky hotel which is busy and offers a good service. Lovely area to site see.
p. M.
Great one night break 1st weekend of reopening after corvoneaviras we were well looked after , all viruse systems were in place . Great food excellent service and super golf course although tricky. All at a reasonable price Thank You
H. D.
Excellent roast dinner, will definitely go again. At last somewhere reasonably priced with decent portions and a fantastic atmosphere. Best roast I have had in a very long time 😋
R. B.
Super king-size bed in a spacious en - suite with French windows overlooking the fens and golf course. A short walk from the accommodation to the restaurant where we had an excellent fruit salad and cereal followed by a cooked breakfast. We reconed that it was cheaper than an Air b&b and ideal for our two day break to Sutton Hoo, Snape Maltings and the Butly Oysterage. Thoroughly recommended and we didn't even play any golf!
J. K.
Lovely oldey worldey place with real log fire. Food really nice. Unfortunately breakfast a little bit disappointing. I'd stick to the fresh fruit and yoghurt. The bacon was a bit fatty. The staff were excellent and really friendly and helpful.
N. M.
Comfortable room, very nice food, efficient and friendly service, very relaxing surroundings.
N. a. K. R.
Delicious Sunday roast (beef, pork belly & Fish & Chips). Nice peaceful location (don't need to b a golfer). Shame the our waitress was so unengaged (the manager / owner was great in checking at end of meal that we'd enjoyed it). The dry sherry - (Manzanilla) that one of our group ordered (which was a good wine), was disappointingly room temp rather than chilled as it should have been. Chillean red wine (carmenere) was very enjoyable (and the right temperature!)
A. K.
My stay has been nice. The room and en suite are clean and adequately decorated. Staff are really pleasant to deal with. Breakfast is good. Would've loved if there was a gym facility.
T. C.
Excellent staff that make you feel welcome
R. M.
Played a four ball, found the tees in poor condition due to the fact they were not moving the tee position, bunkers not raked, grren need some attention, still a nice course to play allways enjoy playing there.
W. B.
Nice place, room quite dated, lots of lamps no lights, kitchen bloody terrible prices for what you get served actually quite shocked at this. Lots of parking
T. M.
Nice view over the lake from the club balcony. Nice food and drink, excellent staff too
T. H.
Another great trip. Golf course excellent, best in Suffolk, food very good. Shall return.
C. C.
Golf course is in fantastic condition and was a good challenge for all.
Room was ok, it did the job but the shower head could do with a good clean.
Dinner was good, although the pate only comes with one tiny piece of toast...yes it looks nicely presented on the plate but not very practical.
Only downside of dinner was the jug of house water was dirty - there was a film of green mold on the bottom that got churned up. We got told it was lemon...lemon isn't freen and furry.
Also had a little caterpillar in the salad, at least you know its fresh!
T. C.
We came across the Thorpeness Hotel whilst looking for a last minute room. From the moment we arrived until we left it was a great experience, the staff couldn't do enough to help and the food was excellent. Bed was incredibly comfortable, with great views across the water and all for a very reasonable price. We will back any time we're in Suffolk
R. G.
Very friendly hotel in a great location. Bring your bikes (or hire them from the hotel) to explore the area, or borrow a row boat from the hotel to splash around the mere. Close to the beach, but far enough from the road to be very quiet. We will be coming back!
M. M.
Beautiful and historic. We had Christmas lunch there and it was fab, couldn't fault any of the dishes.. Could have just done with more pigs in blankets. Really great service and prices were reasonable.
M. K.
It's one of the best golfing experiences in Suffolk, if you have the chance to try it, do it, food great.
R. T.
Lovely food, good service and great setting
J. V.
Nice food. Good golf course. Large rooms, wish the beds were bigger. But a quality golf course and a friendly club.
D. G.
We were a large group and staff were excellent in all areas of the Hotel. Food was very good and piping hot. Will visit there again.
V. G.
Had a superb meal with all the family staff were excellent did not play golf on this occasion but hope to on our next visit
A. M.
Wonderful course,challenging but fair.
Very welcoming in pro shop.
We will certainly return to play the course again.
S. T.
Had a great round of golf here, weather was perfect and the course was in great condition. Good value for a visitor to play after midday.
M. “. C.
It was nice being back & course is still tricky but no Guinness in the bar or Morretti local stout wasn't very nice
J. H.
Lovely hotel in a beautiful location. Country Club could do with slightly better signage. Plenty of car parking. Staff very friendly and attentive.
B. J.
Great place to stay for a weekend. The club house is very nice. Rooms are a bit dated but clean and nice.
G. B.
Great food, lovely surroundings.
P. W.
Wonderful golf course. Very comfortable hotel.
The course should be on everyone's must play list.
G. E.
We popped in for a cuppa as we were walking through Thorpeness. It was a nice atmosphere and the staff were efficient and friendly. A nice experience.
T. A.
Fabulous course & hotel. But round ruined by 5 3 balls playing a very slow format - Texas Scramble. Club should not permit this.
r. d.
Very nice setting. Speed bumps on approach road a bit excessive though.
K. M.
Come across this after visiting the house in the clouds and had a great game of crazy golf the golf course looks great to
J. R.

For food, fantastic service with very high quality food.
Easy to recommend and already planning on coming back
C. D.
Very well kept greens and a wonderful golf course
S. S.
Good but not forgiven course, complex and staff were very helpful.
J. S.
Reasonably nice. Quite expensive for what it is though. Beds not particularly comfortable. Food very nice with generous portions.
G. W.
The room was great, and the breakfast was also very good but the selection in the buffet could be more substantial.
D. S.
Fantastic scenery. Punishing if you get off line. Wonderful test of golf in great scenery.
L. B.
Awesome staff lovely, good excellent, golf course challenging loved it.
P. M.
Had a great meal but probably too much meat for both of us , but great value for the money

T. R.
Service was a bit slow but the food and location were top notch and the staff were very friendly and accommodating.
J. K.
Boating lake is great for the family, it is reasonably priced. Would recommend it for a day out!

As part of a group stayed here as part of a golf tour in the area mid March
Staff were fantastic from beginning to end, food and accommodation also very very good.
Golf course was in truly excellent condition for mid March and is a great test of golf, which may prove tough for higher handicappers but its a really great track. We are already planning another trip to Thorpeness for the Autumn. Thank you to all at Thorpeness for a great stay!
S. J.
Excellent facility and friendly staff

Excellent! Food was amazing. And the golf was great too. Always have buggies and an interesting course.
J. M.
Typical resort holiday golf course. The course was in poor condition, the greens are recovering from something or other. Hopefully better condition in a few months.
