Reviews of Glasgow Climbing Centre
S. T.
Was last here 11 years ago! Great place to learn, who'd have thought an old church would be such a good place to build an indoor climbing centre.
They provide abseiling from the steeple, climbing walls in the main part, and bouldering in the basement.
There's also a great cafe on-site, where decent snacks, meals, and hot & cold drinks are available, including plenty of vegan options.
The staff are friendly, helpful, and quite chilled, so any worries about being intimidated are soon dispersed.
You can hire kit (harness, shoes) for a few quid.
If you haven't claimed before, make sure you take an introductory course. The basics are very easy to learn and you'll be climbing in no time.
Why not 5-star?
Well, I have a disabled wife who uses a wheelchair, who would've been happy to come along and use the cafe while my daughter, my friends, and I climbed but it's not accessible.
The entrance is up a flight of stairs (old church, remember) with no ramp, and then the cafe is at the top of a spiral staircase, with the toilets located on the ground floor.
There's no lift up to the cafe, which is a shame as you get a great view of the climbing walls (I believe the cafe is located in the area where the choir and organ would have been).
I recognise that as a climbing centre there isn't much of a reason for them to cater to disabled people, but that doesn't mean it should restrict disabled people from accompanying their friends and family.
Maybe it's something they can think about for the future...
Overall, we had a great time - time that passed very quickly!
For my daughter and I, entrance fee and hire of kit came to £34 in total.
We were in from 7pm until 10pm.

Great experience for 2 x12 yr + 2 x 10 yr olds. Highly recommended if you have never tried climbing before. The instructor was really good; patient and enthusiastic and instilled confidence in my daughter who was not convinced she'd like it or get higher than 2ft...12ft later and with a BIG Smile in face, says it all !!

Fantastic facility. 1st time visiting. Made to feel very welcome. Food from the cafe was excellent
S. M.
Great climbing centre. Has top/bottom ropes, lead climbing, auto belays and bouldering. There is a wee shop and the staff are really helpful. There is a cafe upstairs and also lockers to keep your stuff safe. Its in a lovely church and the atmosphere is lively at times. Can feel busy but there is plenty to climb and lots to give you a challenge
R. G.
Great, polite, and helpful staff. The centre has some good routes with what feels like accurate grades. There were some that felt like someone insanely tall set them, but I am sure I was just missing something. Very packed during peak hours but that's any centre I've been to in Scotland. Definitely plan on going back.

I had a party here for 5 girls and they absolutely loved it. The instructor was engaging and they all said they had a fab time and eager to return. Unfortunately my cafe experience was not as pleasant due to some unreasonable member of staff that met us with a constant chip on her
Shoulder. So in summary id book climbing again but would take the guests out to eat somewhere else after.
G. R.
We took our 13 year old here to get him off his xbox for a change and he had a great time. So much so that we have booked him in for more lessons. The Climbing Centre is located inside an old Church which gives the climbing walls great height. There is a good variety of different climbs which keeps it interesting for the climbers. The only reason I have knocked a star off is because the cafe was closed. The place was super busy with both climbers and spectators so the cafe would have been really busy if it was open. The opening hours for the cafe suggest it is closed every Monday.

Kids go to the edge clubs and can’t get enough of it. The staff are great, very friendly without being fake. And very kind to change a booking at last minute even though they would have been within their rights not to due to short notice
V. H.
Excellent climbing centre in a unique building! With a cafe ❤️
T. M.
First time at GCC today. Super nice welcome and quick induction, then we were left to our own devices. Some really good routesetting, lots of autobelays, great selection of climbs (especially around the 5-6c mark). Looking forward to going again. Oh, and they have showers!
G. G.
Hi Rob visited the centre on Sunday for the autobelay course. jack the instructor was excellent your shoes and harnesses are downstairs but the changing is upstairs I think lt would be advantageous to have better changing facilities like male/female family changing or individual cubicles. The music in the centre is excellent didn't visit the cafe mabye next time I really enjoyed the course and I will return
F. S.
Good climbing center in accessible location.
Not the highest walls but good variety of routes.
Nice cafe.
Parking in the area is absolute hell though.
s. t.
Great climbing centre, has a small shop thay sells climbing stuff and rope by the meter, the walls are great in here with massive amount of variety, bouldering room down stairs, rope walls upstairs and small cafe upstairs from that, cafe is great, and worth the visit,
C. S.
The atmospheric climbing location. This is a superb place for learning and very kid friendly. The constant chilled beats in the background eases you in. Need to have completed a course to take in up to 2 non members to climb. Great variety of technically challenging walls. This is a busy place and rightly so. The staff are superb and offer help. There are changing rooms, toilets and a shower.
There is a shop for your climbing needs.
In the basement there is bouldering floor which is also challenging with good mats.
The balcony cafe has a good mix to offer from toasties, sandwiches and salads. Usually soup as well as some curry. Vegan and veggies are covered. Staff friendly.
N. P.
Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Great food in the cafe! Reeaaallyyy good vegan options.
I. A.
First time here, but didn't use any facilities. As I there for the kids birthday party. Just watched everyone else do the climbing.
Maybe next time!
S. C.
Totally amazing place. Staff really nice and friendly and they allow dogs! My dog came and chilled and everyone loved him. There are plenty of auto belays as well as lead and bouldering. Can get a bit cramped when busy but still an awesome place to go!
J. M.
My daughter loves it. There are levels from novice to expert. Some harder routes have overhangs and are maybe 10m tall. You can hire shoes at the entrance but better bring your own. The location is in a converted church. Parking can be challenging. There is a little cafe upstairs where you can watch the climbers and enjoy a coffee, drink or snack. There is equipment like shoes and harnesses and ropes. There seem to be a lot of regulars. In winter it can get very chilly. The cafe is not open on Mondays.
H. R.
Had a fantastic family session today Saturday with my 2 granddaughters with the instruction from Katrina sorry if I got your name wrong very professional and interactive with the 3 of us a 60 yr old a 11 yr old and 7 year old would recommend this place to everyone for a fun and great all around workout thank you very much
N. A.
Great climbing facilities, had a session at the local quarry a few weeks a go as well, all catered by The Glasgow Climbing Centre. staff are really knowledgeable and extremely helpful and always enjoy going there. Would highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in rock climbing.
A. B.
Really good customer service and friendly staff. Climbing was great with lots of good and challenging routes. We liked how many auto belays there were too. Will definitely be back!
C. K.
I absolutely LOVE the GCC!
Great place, easy to get to either by car or public transport. Great music, staff are friendly and give great advice and the food... Oh. My. God. AMAZING. Plus you can watch people climb while you eat.
They have a bouldering room downstairs too if you dont want to do top rope or lead climbing.
There are quite a few more auto belays now which is a great addition! I took a beginners course a while back and the instructors were great.
If you are looking to try something new go here!
C. F.
Great location. An old church transformed into a lovely climbing centre. Helpful staff with a great knowledge and good atmosphere. You need to be a member or signed in with a member to go in, a simple sign off on belaying and tieing the knots correctly. Check out the cafe as well for some great meals and snacks.
V. J.
Daughter did a session with The Edge club. She came back raving about it so we'll definitely be back. Cafe upstairs is nice to sit in and listen to excellent 80s indie soundtrack they were playing in the background. Bring a cardigan if you're just sitting around. Fantastic old church building can be a bit chilly. On street parking easy enough.
J. F.
My son and I love this place. The climbing is great, but what really makes it is the professional and helpful staff members. Thank you.
N. J.
Quirky spot. Decent climbs and cool small bouldering area. The bouldering isn't that high but the routes are really well set and cover a lot of levels. Quite a few good auto belay routes to. Very helpful staff and they are strict in tieing in and safety all round. Never had to tie in at a wall before in front of an instructor but I welcomed it as its great to see a high standard of safety.
E. R.
Excellent climbing venue with friendly and helpful staff. Great place for beginners.
A.
We did a family session for my 7 year old's birthday and had a fab time. Great instructor.
L. S.
I took my son and two friends for the first time , didn't really know what to expect. It was really good, the instructor was brilliant. The boys had an excellent time would highly recommend.
J. O.
I have just had my first induction at the GCC and the course was great! The induction group was quite small, 6 of us. The staff are very knowledgeable and safety was the priority when learning. All the required climbing equipment was provided and fitted to suit the individual. I recommend 👍🏼
M. H.
Friendly staff, plenty of routes, good mixture of top ropes, auto-belays, space for leading, and a very tough bouldering area. Amazing café too, which is a must visit!
Y. C.
A great day out for my boy. He absolutely loved it.
J. H.
Great venue and quality instructor's well done all
L. A.
We booked a climbing day for the kids (age 7 and 9). Almost 4 hours of climbing training, lunch and abseiling. The kids loved everything and seeing the coach coax our oldest down the abseil, which he was rightly proud of achieving, I can't praise the staff highly enough. The cafe is also great for watching the climbing with amazing cake.
J. E.
Nice range of climbing walls with steep overhangs, slab, vert, etc. Lots of lead opportunities as well as challenging top rope. Prices are good, and you can sign in 2 less experienced climbers if you're preregistered. Only criticism I have is that the routes don't get updated all that often.
R. T.
Really friendly staff, and great variety on the walls for climbing (didn't boulder) within a beautiful building. We were told the cafe was open when we arrived but it was closed 2 hours beforehand which was a shame.
J. W.
Intro to climbing was an excellent course. So much information to take in amd the instructor was excellent and friendly and patient. Made my wife and I feel very safe and eager to return for session 2 and more climbing
D. G.
Each year I supervise medical students coming to the Climbing Centre to undertake projects investigating the physiological responses to climbing. I could not rate highly enough the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff there.
M. S.
A friendly place to climb, and a great variety of auto belay routes for solo climbers - some creative route setters for sure! The lead routes look good, with attainable options even for lower grade climbers. I'll be back for sure!
M. R.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff always willing to help.
R. G.
Had a two hour session with Allan as our instructor. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, helpful and infinitely more patient with my two kids than I am!!! Got to experience several different types of climbing around the centre and it was well catered for our complete amateur status! Great fun and really well priced. Very happy customers
A. H.
Fantastic cafe. Lots of fab vegan options. Maximus is best vegan sandwich ever -delicious. Photo attached. Friendly helpful staff too.
E. T.
Had a birthday event for my 9 year old twins and 4 of their friends. They loved it. The instructor Rachel was great with them all
, and they fitted in so much to the 1 hour 45 minutes that they were tired and hungry after. The cafe upstairs was friendly with decent coffee - somewhere to sit and wait with free WiFi available. Would definitely recommend for an slightly different party for a small group of comrades.
S. D.
Best gym in Glasgow for roped climbing. Emailed the store asking if something was in stock, got a "Yes probably" (probably is a new one to me on stock inquiries lol) and when I got there 30 minutes later it wasn't in stock. Quite annoying cause it would have taken them a 10 second walk from the counter to the shelves to check for me but hey ho.
T. A.
A brilliant day abseiling from the spire and had a good climb indoors staff are all great as well.
F. M.
GCC will always be a bit special, was good to be back
I. C.
We booked a family taster session for three of us. The instructor was friendly and very careful that we were being safe. After fitting our harnesses, helmets and climbing shoes we were climbing straight away on auto belays. When we got the hang of that he taught us to belay each other on the more tricky walls. The hour went really quickly and was good fun. Highly recommended if you want to try climbing.
D. N.
Cool place with creative routesetters and friendly people.
Little critique though: The map they use in the bouldering room on how to tell which problem is which needs some time getting used to. It would be easier If the grades were just marked next to the boulder.
D. S.
Amazing place for beginners and advanced folk alike. A friend and I done a lead climbing course and the Instructor was brilliant . We go weekly now after buying a rope, sometimes more. The routes are excellent and there are levels for everyone!
Some great grub too!
h. i.
This was my first time at the centre but it was an easy matter of filling in a couple of questionaires and giving a brief knot and belay demonstration and I had my competency. The centre is a converted church which gives it a little more closed in and personal feel. There is a boulder room in the cellar, with a cafe on a mezzanine floor above the main climbing area. Plenty of various walls and routes to climb. Staff aplenty were around, very friendly and happy to help. Fantastic taste in music pipped in at perfect levels. A great day out.
T. R.
The Glasgow Climbing Centre is my favourite place in Glasgow to hide away from the world... whether it's in the bouldering room downstairs, up high on the climbing wall trying to push myself a bit further, or simply up in the café enjoying the best coffee in town and a delicious meal from their excellent menu. (I have yet to try the Haggis Nachos but hear they are amazing!)
I feel they have a good variety of climbing routes, and although I am not an experienced climber, there are routes within my capabilities as well as plenty of opportunities to challenge myself.
The music selection is varied, a mix of old-school rock, blues, pop, electronic -- but always on point. They succeed in creating a very chill, welcoming atmosphere for all.
The staff are friendly, helpful and professional and just all around very cool people.
y. c.
We took 6 ten year old kids for a birthday treat.. and they had a great time. Staff were lovely and the homemade pizza and soup went down well. Four stars because we would have liked to venue into more advanced climbing. Maybe next time.
T. B.
Done there introduction to climbing Course 2x3 hour sessions. Great value for money. Had to different instructors both were excellent and each brought a slightly different style to the instruction.
I had climbed a bit before but had never been given any instruction in techniques beyond basic safety so this was fantastic. My wife had never climbed before and was a bit nervous but both instructors done a great job of building her confidence.
Scince completing the course we have been back to climb a few times and will probably continue to visit regularly.
W. H.
We booked the climbing centre for a party of six nine year old girls. Alan the instructor was great and very patient with them. They all had a fantastic time. I'd love to go back and give it a go too.
K.
First time - friendly and helpful staff
C. H.
I'm a total beginner at climbing. Done an introduction course years ago and finally getting round to putting the knowledge to the test. Staff are friendly, and the climb routes are varied and regularly changed to keep things fresh. Im sure there's a route to challenge everyone. They even have a couple of the top feed lines so you could come without someone to belay for you and still get some climbing done. cool place.
R. T.
Great facilities, excellent training, friendly staff.
J. R.
Excellent facility! Highly recommend.
e.
Great, well run facility
C. J.
Excellent food. Very friendly. And fascinating to watch the climbers.
M. L.
A great climbing facility. There's plenty of climbing to choose from in the main hall with top ropes and lead climbing on offer. Our you can go downstairs and hit the bouldering room. To finish your day off, head to the Balcony Café and have done delicious food and great coffee.
J. W. (.
Fantastic time. Friendly environment, friendly staff and nice wee café upstairs
S. T.
Amazing atmosphere, lots of great climbs from top ropes, lead, auto belays and a bouldering section. Lots to get your teeth sunk in to, the introductory classes was brilliant for me as a complete beginner.
H. H.
Fantastic 10th birthday party for my son. Encouraging, friendly staff; great variety of climbing and games; lovely food. Can't recommend it highly enough. Many thanks.
J. L.
Kids sessions are excellent. First time there and my 8 year old was buzzing with excitement when he got to the top of his first wall. Instructors are very good with the kids too.
B. B.
Friendly staff and a nice diversity of routes. The architecture is one of a kind by way of climbing gyms. Totally worth checking out for that alone.
The downsides: the routes aren't always clearly marked as holds can get chalky obscuring the differences between red, orange, and pink. The holds themselves (and perhaps more importantly the features) could stand to have a solid brushing as some can get a bit of chalk-slime. Lastly, the bouldering carpeting is unusually abrasive, making landings rougher than expected. It's like falling on sandpaper: fine so long as only your feet touch it.
Complaints aside, I'd totally recommend coming for top rope or lead climbing. Bouldering I might suggest passing on though.
S. R.
Great gym, please try of routes and interesting styles good diversion for a few hours. Better than a few other climbing gyms I've been too,the buildings nice and so is the food, some good snacks to keep the climbing going.
A.
Good points: friendly, knowledgeable staff, good atmosphere, good variety of climbs. Bad points: the place needs a good scrub and a lick of paint! Can get very busy weekday evenings.
I.
The best climbing place in Glasgow. Loads of different routes that are reset regularly, there's loads of different options available for climbing including lead, top rope, auto belays (the new auto belay walls are awesome!!!) and bouldering. Add to the mix the best café in Glasgow and you just can't go wrong. The staff are very friendly, very helpful and the climbing centre runs loads of different courses so you can learn new skills and there's plenty of meet up groups as well so you'll never be short of a climbing partner.
M. E.
Second time we've been whilst visiting Glasgow and our daughter loves it. Some great climbs in an amazing building, a converted church.
Well worth a visit.
B. L.
Love the place. New to climbing , my partner and I were there and it's brilliant time spent. Staff are great, food out the cafés great too.
0. N. 3.
This is Glasgow's only rope climbing centre, further more the Glasgow Climbing Center is also the leading sport climbing venue in the west of Scotland. The staff are nice, the panels get updated very often and the Balcony Cafe there is great. A perfect place to hang out with friends, train, take the kids on a fun day out or do some team building.
N. R.
Great place to climb. Plenty for everyone with boldering, leading and top rope walls, all of varying difficulty. Lessons for families, children's parties and squad training for competitors. This is all topped off with a great Cafe.
I. R.
Great and fantastic place to climb. Fast climbing, lead climbing, top rope and bouldering. However prices are expensive, in other countries it's just 3-5 euros
C. F.
Visited with kids on a Scout trip. Staff were great, different variety of climbs for kids and they loved it. Cafe great for a good cup of coffee whilst waiting.
A. Z.
A 'safety first' rigour followed swiftly by fun and friendly challenges. Great Staff, Scott is super helpful! Thanks.
E. D.
Good variety of walls without being overwhelming. The cafe has lovely food with good options for veggies and all the staff are friendly and helpful.
F. M.
Experienced staff and well stocked store. Climbing walls are well maintained and have good range of grades. Only better place to indoor route climb is Ratho. Better bouldering at TCA. GCC is a good place to start as you can get rope and boulder experience.
A. C.
Enjoying the experience learning the climbing. Great food and plenty of kit on offer in the shop. Decent prices but could open an hour or two earlier.
F. “. M.
Love this place. If you like indoor climbing and bouldering, you will like it as well. Remember that you should visit a church every Sunday. :)
I. J.
Really nice and informal. I went with a friend who taught me the basics, and there were a good range of easy to medium walls. Equipment hire was painless.
S. T.
Fairly well priced. Has auto-belays, top ropped areas, lead walls and a small bouldering area. Also has a nice cafe which looks over the wall
J. K.
This is an awesome place, staff are great, helpful and enthusiastic. Just a really cool place to train and hang out. Wow and the food is unbelievably amazing.
A. C.
Love this place! Great climbing facilities, although the bouldering section is short. Staff are excellent and very knowledgeably.
P. B.
First time climbing and being taught the basics through the intro course with Preston! Everything very well explained and given the time and patience to learn! Loved it!
S. K.
Great rutes, especially on the lead walls! Lovely, friendly people! I especially like the community feeling in this club - you always see familiar faces :)
P. M.
Just love this place! The staff and people are so friendly and helpful!
J. M.
Just finished the intro course, part 1 and 2. Staff are really approachable and friendly. Great support for new starters! Can't wait to get back to it!
S. S. S. S.
Very friendly staff. Levels of all routes are clearly labelled on their respective walls. Definitely looking forward to going again and giving the final star!
M. A.
Great staff and great prices for climbing. You need to be signed in with a member or take a climbing test to be allowed in, which is a good safety precaution in a place like this.
L. S.
Nice staff, great cafe and a fantastic atmosphere. A very pleasant environment in which to climb.
D. S. L.
Instructors are great, very competent and know how to speak to people. The centre itself is pretty impressive, and it has a great bouldering room downstairs.
A. C.
Outstanding fun. Amazingly friendly and helpful staff. Customer service some of the best I've experienced in Scotland. But....man it's cold....
A. D. G.
Nice climbing center, expecially if you are alone, there are 7 (if I remember well) self belay with at least 3 differents routes each from 5a to 7a Level. Recommended
