Reviews of Ice Factor, The National Ice Climbing Centre
J. M.
We visited for the beginners Ice Climbing taster, we LOVED IT! Henry our instructor was absolutely amazing, he was a great teacher, really friendly and positive. All of the staff we met were lovely actually! We tried out the climbing wall as well which was pretty good. All in all 10/10 experience we will definitely be back!
N. M.
We booked an ice climbing lesson as we had never tried it before. It was a great introduction to Ice Climbing and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Amy was our instructor and she made us feel comfortable and gave really clear instructions and helpful feedback.
The place itself looks great, we didn't get the chance to try the bouldering or rock climbing but are likely to do next time we're up that way.
Cannot recommend this place enough!
M. W.
Great place! The instructors are excellent and very friendly. We had a group of 4 for a 1 hour taster; the hour goes by very quickly but unless you are an experienced ice climber you'll too sore to complete a route. Great alternative to the hills on a rainy day or if winter conditions are poor, just make sure to call a week ahead to avoid disappointment.
N. C.
We did the 1hr taster session. Great fun and well worth the price. Our instructor Harrison was very friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Even allowing us to run a little over the hour to ensure we all got to try the ‘chimney’ climb.
M. D.
Due to bad conditions in the hills we decided to visit for a little indoor ice climbing. Our instructor Hugo was brilliant and we had a great time. Would recommend taster sessions to anyone who does a bit of winter mountaineering and would like a confidence boost or any first timers. As we were relatively competent we were able to do some of the harder routes while Hugo instructed a novice pair, by the end of which they were climbing well and confident. Didnt use cafe but looked clean and nice. 10/10 would recommend

Fantastic experience for an 11 Yr old and 14 Yr old. Instructor Andrew was fantastic , encouraged both to push themselves and get the most from instruction session. Would certainly visit again.
S. T.
Booked a beginner rock climbing lesson lead by Amy, had so much fun and made quick progress under her instruction. Would definitely recommend and I will be back! :-)

A fantastic centre for climbing. The staff were very honest that my daughter was too slight to manage the ice climbing, and that it wasn't worth paying for the experience as she wouldn't get far. I appreciated their honesty. Both my kids went on the climbing walls, and Nathan was fantastic with both of them - supporting my younger one that got scared of the height, and championing my older one who lived the challenge of the overhangs! Thank you so much. Would definitely recommend 👌

I tried ice climbing for the first time at the Ice Factor for one hour. My instructor was Stu and he was very good. He was very informative with respect to technique and very personal. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone and with Stu as the instructor.
Nathan was also very helpful. As I was trying it by myself (as my friends went to the local bar instead) he put my bag in a secure location. My friends returned when I was on the ice to cheer me on though.

Well where to start !
Jack one of the guides is amazing he has been our guide now on a couple of trips !
He is full of knowledge and shares that knowledge at a pace you can learn my daughter is 6 and he was amazing with her .
We now come every time she we’re in the area .
On a recent trip I was paired with jack again for a go on the ice wall and it was amazing so much fun can’t wait to come back tho jack had to save the day i lost a an axe in the ice 😂
On the same trip again my daughter was climbing with a family friend and I believe the guide was called Andrew he agin was great and really worked hard with my daughter when she was getting tired so she got he full use of the experience.
Even if your scared to climb get on over these guys will help you and get you on the walls in some way ! You won’t regret it
So I suppose what we’re saying Ian we love the place and the staff are a real credit to the owner!

Had a great time in the ice wall once again, took my 12 year old son with me this time. Our instructor Stewart was brilliant, great personality and really patient with Finlay. Highly recommend this facility. Always have a great experience when we go.
L. S.
I had a great time at ice factor yesterday, i did the ice climbing taster and Andrew was my instructor. He did an amazing job at getting me started, he was real friendly and did a great job at teaching me the techniques. The hour was more than long enouph, i got 4 full climbs in before it was over, no wasted time at all, well worth the visit!
A. L.
First time visiting today for an ice climb taster. Was an absolutely great experience. I had Jamie as my instructor and he did a fantastic job and was really informative. I left with loads of knowledge and will definitely be returning in the near future.
l. s.
Impressive walls of ice.Great if you are learning .Also conventional climbing walls.
K. R.
Did a "hit the ice" 2.5 hour session today having never ice climbed before but done a bit of indoor climbing before. really good fun with the instructor Anne Rebecca helping us out with tips and showing us proper technique. Had our pick of routes round the whole place and were taught basics of placing ice screws too. Plenty of time to try all the routes we wanted. sure we will be back. Cafe was good too.
C. H.
Walking the West Highland Way, I arrived in Kinlochleven around lunchtime in search of a coffee. What a hidden gem this cafe is! Friendly staff, relaxed setting in a beautiful bright space by the climbing walls. Loads of hot food options and cakes including vegan. Coffee was great too! Plus, everyone is in climbing gear so you don't feel out of place rocking in with boots and a backpack 😁
S. B.
Went with my son and had a great climbing session at the Ice Factor. Session was instructor lead and he was really good, informative, offering improvements and being supportive. Facilities to excellent, small shop offering climbing and walking equipment, and other nice fancy goods. The cafe is great, with some great cakes and hot drinks. There was a selection of meals that looked great. Site was COVID safe, with hand gel stations everywhere, face masks required and the staff following the guidelines. We looked into the big ice room, which looked really good, maybe next time...
Fun sessions and great fun.
P. V.
Went with a friend to try ice climbing and also to try out some new crevasse rescue gear on the climbing wall. Staff were friendly and totally accommodating both to our novice status and our desire to try out some weird gear. Hue, who was our guide for the 'Hit The Ice' was a top bloke who taught us the basics and then was full of useful information on improving safety and efficiency when moving on the ice. As someone who hasn't ice climbed before - I heartily recommend it if you're into exciting outdoor activities.
The centre also has plenty of facilities, such as a cafe serving solid coffee and reasonably priced local food, showers, and an outdoor gear shop.
C. B.
Above and beyond.
Great place, helpful staff, clean, fun, lots to do. We had a blast. Note: Take good gloves for ice climbing. Give it a try, you might enjoy it!
H. T.
Great first climbing lesson with Andrew today. Kids had a great time. So many walls to choose from in a relaxed, supportive and safe environment.
D. H.
I love how people find new possibilities for old factory buildings and dare to actually invest their time and money in such projects. This is a great example and success. Really nice climbing experience for every age and lovely helpful staff 👍🏼
...and great (handmade) coffee too if you just need to get warm or dry again.
Z. L.
Just fantastic. First time you will need to book an instructor or bring your own MIC. Fantastic instructors really lovely manner and engagement. Faultless. Lovely staff in cafe delicious food incredibly clean toilets. 100% all round!
P. W.
This was a great experience after a day of hiking. My son Adrian and I did the climbing walls. Tom the instructor was great at helping us learn the techniques and safety procedures. Enjoyable time
K. W.
Great rock climbing gym with ice climbing offered as well! We were floored by the helpfulness and generosity of the staff. They have public washrooms and showers, a cafe, rock and ice climbing. What more could you want?
S. S.
Very nice first experience with ice climbing. We were a group of 2 persons and had one instructor just for us. Huw was a great instructor, patient and really friendly. At the beginning, we had tips and advices for the position to adopt on ice with the body and feet. Then, we could have 3 different climbs during the hour of activity. We definitely recommend it and the price was fair (30 pounds per person) 😊
T. M.
The climbing facilities are brilliant and the help desk at the front are helpful and friendly . However the cafe is awful! The food is not great my coffee was cold. We waited 45 minutes to be told they had forgotten half our order .
The waitress is rude 🤔
M. M.
A great way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon in the Highlands. Excellent facility, friendly staff and a nice vibe
B. K.
excellent instruction. In 1 hour the instructor fixed my belay techniques, ice climbing skills, and climbing confidence. Hope I can go go again.
A. E.
So I did the ice climbing experience with a bunch of friends I met on the west highland way and it was an awesome and unique experience!
Thought that it will be really hard because I'll be exhausted from the trip(we did some really long days just before this including a 50km walk!) But surprisingly ice climbing is actually working on completely different muscles so we were just fine(still was hard nonetheless).
Great instructor and great value for money in my opinion.
R. T.
I have had lots of lessons here and used the climbing walls and ice wall many times over the last year. Brilliant place. Staff are really good, very knowledgeable, helpful and have tailored instruction to suit my individual needs. I have progressed from novice to enjoying climbing at a reasonable level (rock climbing grade 5/6, winter ice climbing grade 2/3) in a relatively short time. 5 star reviews for instructors Connor and Joe for my recent lessons on the ice wall.
PS. Coffee and food are also very good.
Z. T.
I've discovered this place while I was hiking the West Highland Way, but had no time to spend there then. Drove back up a few months later and had my first even wall climbing experience. It totally worth every moment it; the staff was super helpful and the instructs could not had been better! I was with a friend of mine, and both of our climbing was tailored, on the spot, to our needs, meaning that I wanted to learn about the technical parts which I definitely did, while my friend was into trying out different paths instead, which he got to as well.
Needless to say, we both really enjoyed ourself and couldn't had wished for a better introduction to climbing!
T. P.
Amazing centre, incredible facility, lovely staff. As rock climbers we found the 'Hit the Ice' session really useful, learnt a lot and had a laugh as well.
Also a very good place for local knowledge, recommendations and a bit of hot food and drink, so you can plan your next adventure whilst your arms recover from the pump that is ice climbing!
B. M.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Cafe reasonably priced with a decent selection. I didn't use the climbing facilities but the folk using them appeared to be having a blast. Toilets very clean and modern. Overall it appears that the staff who work there enjoy it and that is passed onto the customer.
D. M.
Highly recommend this. Our 6 and 8 year old loved the climbing walls. Our very knowledgeable and friendly instructor had us belaying ourselves safely inside an hour meaning we could make the most of the facilities for longer. Food is reasonable and they have a bar for a well earned pint of best afterwards. We will be back for the ice wall when kids feet grow (min if size 4 crampons available).
A. B.
Loved our ice climbing taster session. It was a really small group - just 3 of us - so we got a lot of personalized instruction. One of our favorite experiences from our time in Scotland. Pro tip: they sell cheap gloves in their shop and the ice climbing room is maybe 40 degrees Fahrenheit so you can easily get away with wearing just a sweatshirt and long pants.
R.
Great set up for climbing, with a variety of routes for all abilities. Cafe provided good grub for a reasonable price and it's a cozy environment for a winter indoor session.
Friendly engaging staff.
Hope to be back soon for some ice climbing!
J.
Had a freaking amazing time on the ice wall today (5/9/2016). The staff are lovely and friendly. Our instructor was an 👼and really helpful. Also had some chips 🍟 and a ☕ afterwards from the cafe. All in all, AWESOME!!! 😁
If I'm ever in the neighbourhood I'll definitely book again.
S. S.
Great find whilst on holiday. Caters for the complete novice to rock climbing, so don't hesitate. Also has the world's biggest indoor ice wall. Café, bar and restaurant within. Excellent staff, particularly the tutor, James (thanks James). Food reasonably priced.
B. M.
Cant rate this place highly enough. Had an ice climbing session, our instructor Hugh was very pleasant and friendly. Didn't use the cafe, but looked nice and very clean.
K. J. C.
Just the most tremendous place. Not glamorous, sexy or even particularly tidy, but just great people managing a superb facility.
C. G.
Stopped in for lunch and had a chicken burger with chips that was quite underwhelming in terms of portion size, the "burger" looked to be a quite small breaded chicken fillet in a bun that was twice the size with no condiments or toppings, instead tomato sauce or mayo etc. offered in little packets at the side. I did opt for no salad but feel it wouldn't have made much difference to the overall meal. Not worth the £8.95 I paid, I'd have been fine with £4.95. My friend had the Mac and Cheese and after trying some it reminded me a lot of school dinners, but the portion size was a good bit better as it came with lots of chips and peas (albeit a bit crunchy), still not really worth the £8-9 she paid, but satisfactory enough. Will try something else in the future and hopefully get my money's worth, or just go elsewhere like the Tailrace, MacDonald Hotel or The Getaway for value for money pub grub.
One good thing, the peanut butter stack tray bake was delicious! 🤩
K. B.
Excellent facilities. Helpful staff. Walls diverse and the best ice climbing we’ve seen indoors. Good cafe and plenty of places for parents to sit and watch. Also - auto belay devices if you don’t have a partner.
L. S.
I came here last week with a group who were all really keen to do some rock climbing - I wasn't quite so keen, being scared of heights. Our instructor, Mark, was great - really enthusiastic and positive even when faced with a scaredy cat like myself. I've already recommended this place to friends who climb. Thanks for as pleasant an experience as I could hope for when facing my fears! :)
n. b.
Had a day outdoor rock climbing with Pete yesterday and it was fab! The views were amazing and it was such a great experience for us 4 beginners! Pete on the other hand was exceptional. He took his time and explained it all to us and was nothing but patient! I was absolutely petrified and he was so calming and reassuring throughout! The day would not have been the same without Pete🌟
M. J.
One of the biggest experiences while I was in Scotland. Climbing the ice mountain!
S. T.
Super fun, definitely worth doing if you're in the area. The staff and instructor were cool and friendly.

Had a rainy day on holiday so thought we would give ice climbing a try. Rebecca was a very good teacher, she was patient with us and then pushed us to our limits at the end of the session. Really good fun. Thanks very much.
S. S.
Enjoyed ice climbing instruction with Anne Rebecca. Really good morning, her expectations made me climb higher. She was observant the whole time giving helpful personalised feedback, and remembered the issues of being a beginner. Went the extra mile and wrote out some other places we might like to visit. Thanks Anne.
M. M.
Tom was an awesome instructor! And we had so much fun!! We are both climbers but this was super different and so worth doing. If we are ever back in town, we will be back for another go!
R. C.
Went for a 1 hr introductory ice climbing session. Great experience from booking in the morning a couple of hours before, to the session itself with spot on advice from Tom. The hour went fast, but was probably about right as my aching forearms would have struggled with much more!
j. h.
The ice climbing is great fun and the hour flys by. The website wasnt very good and so wasnt sure what to wear. I found thick socks, long trousers, long sleave t shirt, a jumper and a pair of normal gloves kept me worm enough. Hung around and went rock climbing after. The centre is small but i thought the roots where good. Cafe is good too
J. C.
It was our first time ice climbing. James and Mike were wonderful instructors. We had a really great time. We highly recommend!
j. l.
Had a great time and managed more than I thought I would at 61 years old, thank you to Amy and Hugh for getting me there ! Very professional and safe. Highly recommend ! Thank you guys for a very memorable day !

Really enjoyed our first rock climbing session whist holidaying in Fort William . Mark was brilliant , very patient and we all loved his Jimmy Carr laugh.

Awesome Ice Climbing experience. The Instructor Anne Rebecca was fantastic. Will definitely be returning for another session!! Wendy & Archie

Lively staff.

Perfect stop on our way from Fort William to Loch Lomond. Kids and hubbie loved to climb and Anne Rebecca was a great instructor. Restaurant & coffee nice as well.
A. E.
Amy our instructor was great and also told funny jokes.
L. C.
Ice wall was great fun. Totally different to rock climbing. Definitely recommend the 2.5 hour session though as I don't think an hour would be enough.
B. V.
Great place to get a taste of adventure sports.
Kinlochleven is an ideal destination for adventurous family vacations. Its also a place where the fameous "west highland way hiking" route passes.
J.
I went ice climbing with my dad and it was great. The staff were nice, the ice wall was really cool (pun intended) I would definitely recommend the ice factor

The review could be a bit longer.
First of all, the homepage is very confusing. I wasn't sure if you can just walk in or have to book in advance. I didn't find the prices right away either and if you click on some links, e.g. "About us" you only get to an error page.
Then called and was told that if you don't want to do a course (and just want to do normal climbing), you could just come by. The employee was very friendly and helpful.
The on-site staff (maybe it was the same) was also super nice.
I can't rate the ice climbing because we didn't do it. This is (according to the name) probably the focus of the hall.
It can't be the bouldering area. There are 2 Beastmakers and a small spray wall overhanging about 45 degrees, but the rest is really not worth mentioning. The "boulders" that are screwed there are uncreative and the area is only suitable for warming up. If you only want to boulder, you are definitely wrong here.
The climbing area isn't too big either, but there is a small slab with really nice routes and a bit of an overhang. The wall structure is interesting. Here we don't work with volume, but the walls are already specially shaped. Unfortunately, this also means that some of the handles do not rest completely on the wall surface and partially protrude. I just noticed it when I kicked it. I didn't really dare to put any weight on it because there was a 1 mm wide gap between the step and the wall. It was okay for a one-off trip, but especially if you climb here more often, I think the same wall structure can get very boring.
What I also didn't like was that there were almost no lead routes of an easier grade. My feeling was that the ratio of top-rope and lead routes was around 70% top-rope and 30% lead. I thought it was a shame, but the focus is somewhere else. You should be aware of that.
Unfortunately, the café only had cake and nothing savory on offer today. The cappuccino was good if you compare the coffee here in Scotland. Plus point in any case, that there was plant milk. Negative point is that the gentleman who also welcomes customers at the entrance touched my brownie with his hands. I'm a bit sensitive there - you could use pliers or something like that.
Unfortunately, the changing rooms were closed when we were in the hall. We thought only for cleaning (as the sign also showed) and that they would open again later because we also wanted to take a shower, but unfortunately they remained closed and you had to change in the hallway or at the edge of the café. Not so nice. The toilets were also in the area that was closed "due to cleaning" and you had to use the barrier-free toilet, which was not quite as clean as it was used by men and women. I could observe how a lady went to the toilet with her climbing shoes too. It's actually common sense not to do that, but in our hall there are also signs that you shouldn't enter the toilets with climbing shoes. That was missing here as far as I could see.
But we still had a nice day in the hall with not so nice weather.
