Reviews of Nuffield Health Merton Fitness & Wellbeing Gym
L. B.
There's lots of space and reasonably up to date equipment. It would benefit from additional squat racks and platforms, and it does seem to take a long time for broken equipment to be fixed. Probably not the fault of the gym itself, more a Nuffield Service agreement. Staff are always super friendly. Gets busy at peak times but by 8pm it's always super quiet and easy to get on with your workout.
E. E.
It's a well equipped facility for fitness and leisure as well + a couple of studios for classes like yoga, pilates etc.. The 70£ a month is worth it especially if you count in the fact that some competitors like gymbox charge 100£ only for gym plus classes. Peak hours are not that horrible either. I found only 2 pics in my gallery to upload

Good sized gym with a range of equipment. Only used the gym facilities so cant comment on the pool. Pretty busy most of the time but that's London gyms! Expensive but only gym in the area with a pool and has a lot of classes.
Decent selection of equipment and spread out but it's so hot in there! I went at about midday on a Saturday and even then it was so hot, I was sweating as soon as I got in, they definitely need to sort out air conditioning there!

As a one off Saturday visitor to this gym I found it to be excellent and compared to other Nuffield Gyms the only one that tops this one is the flagship gym on Cannon street.
All the staff where very friendly and competent, the gym is huge, with large reception area where you can take a seat and power on your laptop, read a book and enjoy your post work out snack. The gym floor is excellent, has all the barbells, dumbbells and equipment you can think of and with large cleared space for any kind of movement or plyometric training.
Seems family friendly in a balanced way so children or families or not to overbearing or infringing on other gym goes who just want to crack on and get on with it.
The spa area is very nice, with sauna, steam room and a hot pool. The gym also has a large pool for swimming.
The only down size is the cleanliness in the shower area might be better, as I said before the gym is huge and the changing rooms are huge but there are only 10-12 showers lined up in a small corridor so it doesn't match the rest of the gym's capacity. Make sure you wear flip flops when showering there.
Overall very great and I would be a member if I was living in the area.

Great gym. Been a member a coupled of years now. Has its ups and downs but overall a good gym with pool and sauna and steam rooms. It is small so can be a bit too busy but you choose your times if you can. My biggest gripe is cleaning of the changing rooms and gym equipment. Reception staff are a friendly bunch.

Went there mainly for the swimming and spa pool, absolutely loved it.
The pool is very well maintained, and has very clear water...unlike the murky water at my local Bannatyne’s pool.
The Spa pool has many different areas which were perfect for winding down after a session. They have lay down or stand up areas in the jacuzzi, and in addition have a couple of different water fall zones which were powerful.
Also made use of the sauna and steam room, with using the ice water bucket after to cool down.
Had an awesome work out and wind down there, just a shame it’s not more local to me(Crystal Palace)...was worth the effort travelling though.

I went on a free gym pass mostly to use the sauna facilities as I have a puregym membership. Did a quick workout in the gym, a lot of the equipment is broken, I personally wouldn't pay the cost of their membership considering the state of the gym. The sauna Jacuzzi facilities are nice and what you would expect.

Editing my review after a couple of years.
It's a big gym with lots of equipment, however some of it isn't in a good state of repair. Of the six or so rowing machines only two work properly and no one seems bothered to fix the others or put "out of order" signs on them. The manual treadmills are missing the backs off the timer panel, so if you run particularly hard or fast (I do sprint training) the batteries fall out mid-run and you lose your time. The weight machines are usually in good condition though.
The locker rooms can sometimes be in a bit of a mess and the paper towel dispensers are almost always empty.
The spa area is almost always clean and tidy.
Most of the staff I've interacted with are friendly.

Large gym floor on the upper levels. Has 25m, 5-lane swimming pool, huge unisex sauna, unisex steam room as well as a warm Jacuzzi/water jet curtain area. A £1 hire fee applies for towels, but you need to request these specifically from the reception. You will also need a padlock, although you can also borrow one from reception if you don’t have one. There are also keypad-operated smaller lockers for valuables. Be warned – it’s one of those places where people like to talk loudly in the sauna though.

I had a free week pass from my work place to use at any Nuffield gym. I checked into the nearest to me and explained why I was there. A lady was assigned to me as a personal trainer and we got talking on what my needs were. That day she took me through some equipment and she allowed me to have a go. After the training or assessment, we agreed to meet at a specific time in my next visit. Unknown to her, the person who booked me in and the lady who the receptionist informed about my pass didn't explain that it wasn't a programme I came for but to use the gym. I didn't know how it worked as well so I had to figure out what to do next though I had never worked out before nor did I know how you use most equipment apart from the ones I was taught or seen outside or on TV. I was disappointed. The only reason why I gave a 3 star was because I was given an MOT check for blood pressure, heart fitness and so on and the guy took me through some exercises I could do at home. Pretty intense circuit training! The last check was with a physio too which I couldn't booked because the lady there was not available and I couldn't get a lady physio elsewhere within their southwest region! I got in touch with there head office and was told to cone on the following week after my pass expired meaning I would have to pay even though the fault was theirs. ( I sent a message to check up on a physio but got no reply so I had to keep calling different branches who redirected me to the head office). I am happy I found some work out on you tube which were of help and another gym where i can pay less and still work out .

Good gym! plenty of room. A good variety of weights and cardio machines. Needs more machines for calves, but most gyms do. I can not really comment on the other facilities as I do not use them. The gym could be cleaner, particularly in the machine section where I stepped over a dried up puddle of someones spilt protein supplement.

Fantastic gym but my word have they got some of the most obnoxious staff you can find in a gym. The job is simple if you're front of house, be welcoming, be helpful and have nice energy. Now before anyone says we're only human, they literally act this way all the time. An old man who's swiped his card too many times how about you let him in with a smile instead of lecturing the poor old soul about it? Also the mensroom never has any paper towel, yet the gym is so stingy with actual towels it's as if you have to sacrifice someone to get one. Honestly it's a cracking gym with ace facilities but the provoking nature of their staff needs to change...

Don't know where he found rude staff, as a member nearly 10 years I've always found the staff really helpful. Loads of iron to pump but I appreciate the terrific spa pool and love the classes. The teachers are the best! One or two little issues over the years ie noisy class neighbours but they have been considered and ironed out. Well done Virgin gym
w. c.
I don't understand the poor reviews as I love this gym. It's 5 minutes away from me and so convenient. This club is a group 3 club and because it allows multi club access I have tried a couple of group 1 clubs which I found cramped with far fewer facilites than the merton club, so feel that in comparison this represents far better value. It's also the friendliest gym I've been to and have to avoid speaking to fellow members sometimes if just want a quick work out before work! The staff too have also always been very helpful and will say 'hi' if meet them in the street. The classes are fun and a must if you're a member as they will correct you if you're not doing the exercises properly. There are always new classes coming out too and the gym has been recently refitted so there is constant innovation. My only suggestion would be make it 24 hr so no excuses for not going.
C. r.
The membership is pretty expensive but I like that you gain access to a lot of their classes too. They open pretty early so its possible to even go before work (not that I would ever do that. Really.) I like that they have a swimming pool, steam room and sauna. However, I wouldn't get a personal trainer because they are so expensive and if you miss one session you can't make up for it another time, you've lost it and that's money wasted. Showers could be slightly less gross looking too that would be nice.
B. L.
Massive facility capable of handling a large amount of people. Great pool, saunas, steam room but could be cleaner at times and smelly kids all over the place at weekends... Grotty showers. I feel the space could be better used, there is an expansive unused cafe area which could easily contain another free weights section. One bench is not enough considering how many people go here... Also the cafe doesn't seem to open very early so no coffee for me before work.
A. C.
First off this place is not cheap. However what you get is definitely value for money. It is an old virgin active building so it's huge! Massive free gym, massive machine area. Pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, solarium. You get a proper health check, blood sugar's, colesterol, lung limit. Remember this isn't just a gym, Nuffield health is an actual health company. They just happen to have a gym. The trainers are ex nurses, paramedics, athletes, etc. Well worth it.
D. C.
A first class gym area! (but changing rooms and spa so-so...).
I agree it might not appear to be the friendliest gym at first, as a lot of users are very serious about their training and that can be intimidating to some. But if you are serious too about your fitness that will be picked up and people will open up to you and try and help out... if you don't know what you are doing and getting in the way a bit, or not putting your stuff away, yes some will get a bit shirty, but it's part of the learning process (every gym has its unwritten rules)... However I have never seen any one ever be violent or agressive (as reported previousely).
I would recommend this facility more for the experienced user. For those starting out, maybe the local leisure centre might be best suited.
P. S.
I love going to this gym. I haven't ever had a problem with the staff or the other users. It's reasonably priced compared to other gyms too. I have never seen any difficulties either, and I go 2 or 3 times a week.

Edit July 2020
Gym reopened and is spot on. Clean and well organized in response to the requirements of social distancing. Well done to the Management and all the members of staff. Thanks
W. S.
I would be here everyday if had the time. Love my Zumba classes for a cardio workout with Ralph and Andy and Aerolatino with Jeff and Tori. Also Doretta's yoga and pilates are great for toning. This is the most sociable gym I've ever been to and have made so many friends.

I have been a member for over a year and missed it so much during the Covid 19 shut down. Good classes, clean and every member of staff I dealt with very helpful. I get regular updates by txt which helps in planning my day. Can't wait for it to reopen. Bring on the 25th July.

And because of such great service I’ve been in touch with Alison at the membership team who we met yesterday again such a lovely lady and I’m looking into getting my finance a membership but nothing 100% yet just looking into it .
