It's an organized unit that performs excellently in attending to eye problems especially urgent conditions and emergencies. However, they are short staffed regarding the number of patients waiting for routine checks and surgeries

Gold Standard treatment. I don't know how to fully express my gratitude to the team (including the HCA who gave me my drops, the X-ray technician and of course the Consultant Miss Rynn) who looked after me, in April, especially the Registrar George. Eventhough they must have been under immense pressure due to Lockdown, they were not only professional and thorough but they were also incredibly kind, warm and easy to talk to. At the end of the appointment I was given upsetting news...a Cancer diagnosis. But even under the dazed, surreal feeling of hearing the "C" word, I felt cared about, like they were genuinely sorry to be giving me bad news. It is sometimes hard to keep your heart and spirit when you work for the NHS but I was incredibly lucky to have been looked after by George and the team. What you do, matters to people like me. Thank you.

Eye Unit is very good but there are some areas which need improving.
Pros:
+ Much quicker than A+E (takes 2-4hrs instead of 4+hrs to be seen by nurse + 1-2hr to see doctor usually).
+ Most of the doctors take the time to read your notes and pay attention to what you're saying
+Some doctors give info about problems so you're clued in
Cons:
- For initial queue to see receptionist, would be much better to have an electronic system rather than cards, as these are often lost (wasting time calling out missing numbers).
- no follow up appointments for eye casualty patients, so you can't see the same doctor, so the process is slower
- consultant eye doctors are worse in my experience, the time for appointments isn't kept to, mine was 1hr+ after the time. Maybe, first come first serve would be better? Also, they take less care when giving medications, in regards to time to take and number of drops needed.
