Located about 10 mins off the A38 North of Plymouth, this huge complex is a busy, well serviced NHS Trust Hospital.
Stagecoach and Citibus run from the City centre at regular intervals, the car parking is ample and very well signposted with three large uncovered and one Multistorey car parks. The main entrance has a patient drop off directly outside adjacent to the many bus stops serving the local area. Once inside we were greeted with a volunteer offering help, a small reception area and a 24/7 Warrens Cafe, WH Smith and a league of friends shop. Toilets and lifts to all floors are situated near the entrance area.
The toilets were spotlessly clean in the main building and the CT scan unit.
The hospital was clean throughout our visit and the staff polite and helpful, masks are required everywhere.
There is a 24/7 A&E and a Helipad!

I had an appendectomy yesterday in. I had to wait a long time, because of course there is a shortage of staff. Despite all that, everyone (doctor, nurses, etc.) was always nice and very helpful. I come from Austria and have never had such a good experience with a hospital. Thank you to all the staff for your efforts!

I must say over the years I have lost faith in the NHS and I have Mid Essex Hospital trust to thank for this.
However Derriford Hospital has rekindled my faith and trust, the reception staff and on duty nurses and staff were fantastic, I wish I could name everyone although my memory is a bit foggy of last night due to pain and blood loss,
Dr Harry Theron was incredible, a professional in his field, yet showed great humility and fantastic interpersonal relationship skills, a huge thank you to everyone and Dr Theron for being 'you'

Great when unwell, waiting times not great, but where aren't they, this is our NHS after all. Usually relatively nice staff, and from my experience, they look after you pretty well. Have their downfalls, but again, where doesn't, just sometimes some staff could do with a tad less salt. Overall relatively jolly good stuffs

During COVID I've had nothing good to say about A&E. I had a nasty fall from height and avoided the hospital for 12 hours. The pain made me immobile and I feared I'd broken bones head, spine, shoulders, ribs. The whole process in and out was 3 hours. I left knowing exactly what damages were done with a care plan and stronger meds to manage myself. Thank you

I had a CT scan last week (colonography). It was a very uncomfortable procedure. However the staff were all so very sweet and kind that they made it as pleasant as it could possibly have been.

My mum had cancer and contracted pneumonia last week ,she was taken into A& E ,where they looked after her impeccably ,we cannot fault anything to do with the care she recieved there ,we got called back in the next day as her health had deteriated ,we were looked after very well ,i cannot thank them enough they went above and beyond ,sadly mum passed away later that evening i honestly cant praise all the A & E staff enough they do a fantastic job under great strain ,bless each and every one of them ,and thank you for everything that you do .they were very apologetic about not getting her in a ward before ,but she had her own room in majors ,and to us that was more private ,so thank you from the bottom of our hearts .

Battle of the Somme. Bring a pillow, change of clothes, drinks, snacks, and a great deal of patience as there are far too many patients. Staff are doing their very best under the trying circumstances

I've had many a surgery at Derriford without issues on their part however issues on my part through fear. Today was my latest surgery and after the amazing team going above and beyond this was my first hospital visit without panic attacks. I have severe medical CPTSD and the staff were extremely understanding, showing patience and kindness throughout my stay. My surgeon retired however he left me in very capable hands with outstanding bedside manners and kindness putting me at ease.

Referred to the Surgical Assessment Unit by my GP for an abscess that had appeared suddenly. Only waited about 30 mins to be seen in triage, both the doctor and nurse I saw were lovely. Sent home to return for surgery the following morning.
Triaged the next morning in about 10 mins, signed consent forms, then was almost immediately prepped for surgery. Surgeons had impeccable bedside manner and gave me a proper laugh.
I went in at half 8 and was discharged by half 12! So efficient. All of the staff were lovely, helpful and funny, I really appreciate how positive they were in what I imagine is an exhausting job.
My only complaint is that I wish there was a bit more awareness on how to treat trans patients. Even when I would disclose my gender identity there was not really much attempt made to use the correct language, though I definitely feel this was always an instance of ignorance over malice.
Overall a really positive experience.

I unfortunately and probably because I’m in my 80’s that I have had occasion to visit Derriford on numerous occasions this year. I can’t fault them in any way, they have been efficient both in time and expertise, for which they deserve the highest praise. My wife has also had to visit, & we have often been able to combine these appointments, as we are a 1 car family and it would be difficult otherwise. Both our experiences are the same, quick and successful attention from competent and kindly professionals. The place is always clean & tide with lots of volunteers keen to give assistance. My past experience of A&E has not been good, but that was a while ago now, I’ll close by saying that the scheduled visits have been exemplary, and could not have been bettered. Congratulations to you Derriford.

Took my son into CAU. Staff were so welcoming, patient and really did care. I didn't feel rushed. My son was cared for and they genuinely cared. Special shout out to student nurse Nicole. She was so lovely

Cannot fault the treatment I received in Oncology Dept. SABR radiotherapy was non-invasive, non-scary, pain-free and hopefully will prove to be effective in completely eradicating the small tumour. Just follow up scans for the next 5 years. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend SABR to anyone if it’s offered. The consultants, staff and facilities were all excellent. The McMillan centre there has some lovely, kind, supportive staff to chat with when you feel a bit wobbly. Thank you Derriford team for your excellent care..

The local NHS Hospital. Has a&e located on site as well as the maternity wards and everything in between. Has a multi story parking unit which like all NHS car parks Is very expensive. Has a couple of coffee shops inside and a few fast food places and a Costa by the multi storey.

As part of pediatric department they are working perfectly with more responsibility to all children patients. Level 12 outpatient and pediatric support all children and young people. They have more facilities to help and they also had a different specialist team member to help children and parents during all different treatments. They are very helpful 🙂.🙂

The attempts of successive governments to destroy our glorious NHS, along with the staffing issues resulting from Brexit have been seriously bad news for hospitals. Coupled with that the huge backlog caused by that blasted virus means that places like Derriford are really stretched and will be for years to come. Nevertheless, the positive, friendly and professional attitudes that were experienced during my wife’s recent treatment here were a credit to every single member of this institution. From the nurses and sisters to the student nurses and porters, I really do mean everyone. It’s just a shame that people who merely want to do their job and help and care for others are hampered by the bean counters and decision makers higher up who hold the purse strings. Turning up for work every day with a smile despite the difficult conditions is nothing short of heroic – I certainly couldn’t do it. I would like to particularly commend the members of Hound, Wolf and finally Postbridge. Bless you all, you really are appreciated.

Attended fracture clinic. Staff although very busy were very helpful and polite. The unit was very efficient with little to no waiting times. X-ray, plaster see doctor then given physio exercises all seamlessly. Brilliant
M. E.
Went to the fracture clinic today and was assessed and had ultrasound on my damaged Achilles. Now have a boot on and hopefully on the road to recovery. Thank you very much for helping me it is much appreciated.

Took my 5 month old baby to child A&E, ended up waiting 7hrs before we got to see a doctor. After we got seen and were put in a room it was like they had forgotten about us, so I got my husband to stand in the doorway so they couldn't miss us. The pictures are of the dirty rusty waiting room floor, which I thought was unacceptable, considering it's a place where children were playing on it. The only positive were, the staff were friendly and gentle with my baby. They were very informative and could answer all of our questions.
L. E.
Derriford is a good hospital but the communication between staff is not. Patients are constantly being forgotten about or pushed aside. I completely get the NHS is struggling etc but don’t tell patients they will be seen by a doctor ‘now’ and then it be 3 hours later. I came in with my 10 week old baby and they left her for 3 hours without any checks and then said “oh you haven’t been seen, let me chase that” and then she was seen straight away.. honestly from giving birth too the communication between staff is just not good
J. B.
I had an operation Tuesday 17 May...The Maxillofacial team led by Mr Courtney was first class....the theatre staff were so wonderful and comforted me throughout.....recovery team on Postbridge ward, led by the marvellous Sara...(Timmins-Williams?)......well, she was just brilliant and her team too. Kept in overnight and night staff of Vida, Lia and Paula continued to be first class.....so hard too as they had to change our wards around at 10pm and back again at 7am..by which time just 2 staff to do this!......Richard led the team back on Postbridge with Sara still sharing herself between the recovery room and new admissions..... In between all of this making myself and room mates refreshments on demand....such hard work for everyone and yet all the staff happy and no complaining. The Maxillofacial care continued with a visit from the head and neck team, lovely to meet with them.
This is to reassure anyone who has to go into hospital, please don't be anxious or worried as the care from start to finish was absolutely first class here.....just a reminder ..this was Postbridge level 4......... Even included free WiFi too.....

Right so I am quite a regular to this hospital and I will say it is outstanding in some aspects whilst lacking in others. The food is terrible on the wards but the level 7 and 6 cafes/restaurants are good. They are understaffed to the point of it takes hours to be seen when you are inpatient. Outpatient treatment is good in some departments but some specific ones (cough cough orthodontics and maxofacial) take months to reply back.

Wonderful people. Erme Ward and Shaugh Ward. Neuro and Ortho teams. I spent nearly a month in Derriford being bolted back together after a fall down an outcrop on Dartmoor. Couldn’t have asked for better treatment from all staff. Professional, caring, funny when needed and courteous at all levels. Thank you
L. N.
Our hospital staff do a fantastic job. A map of the hospital is useful before you go.

I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to the Cardiology Dept at Derriford, especially the staff at Bickleigh Ward and Dr. Cox and his team. They sorted out my heart problem in an efficient and professional manner. The service and support would have been great at normal times but the fact that they can do it while working under difficult Covid operating conditions is amazing. Good job guys.

I spent 10 days in hospital in the Major Trauma section after a bad fall breaking 9 bones! First class in every section no criticisms only that it's ashame other hospitals can't follow in this extremely well organised hospital! Thankyou to all the to all staff, Nurses who looked after me and doctors who operated on me...
M.
A superb experience. 3 days in after heart attack. Really excellent staff, they were excellent in every way. They had so many things to deal with and remained friendly, caring and professional. I take my hat off to them.
The Tea ladies were lovely and the tea and food miles beyond expectations.
Actually it was all way beyond expectations. Above all the nurses put in 100 percent effort to what they were doing and they deserve respect .
K. M.
Amazing staff working incredibly hard! Nothing is too much trouble.. except the temperature on the wards! Oh my lord.. SO HOT! They could save a fortune if they turned the heating down! The whole waiting room on Erne ward were sweating until somebody asked for the window to be opened. I note the receptionist had a fan... patients first please!

I was taken to Derriford Hospital for emergency brain surgery, while I was on holiday in November 17. I stayed there for 3 weeks & we couldn't fault it at all. Everything ran smoothly & all the staff were brilliant, going out of their way to help me & my family. Post surgery, I was extremely over sensitive, with severe memory loss, so it was mainly due to the way I was treated by the staff, that I made such a good recovery. I'm so pleased my symptoms were revealed, while I was in the area & not at home, in Worcestershire, where they were in absolute crisis, during that time.
J. A.
My mother was admitted to the hospital following falling unwell on holiday. She later passed away. I would like to say we received the best care ever. All the staff were wonderful, the doctors , nurses , everyone. They were kind and caring to my mother at all times, and so wonderful to us during the brief period she was alive and afterwards as well. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness and empathy.

PLYMOUTH DERRIFORD UROLOGY - LITHOTRIPSY I am a supporter in every respect of the NHS and I am also a Trustee at Torbay hospital.
It is my belief that staff in all hospitals do the very best job possible with their available funds and expertise available. It is easy to complain and I have generally refrained in my 67 years as I know the NHS to be a gift that the UK should always treasure.
A few years ago Derriford hospital had the good fortune of having been awarded funding for a new lithotripsy machine that can break kidney stones. I would image its value to be around £550k. It also incorporates a functioning X-ray machine for locating kidney stones. This is wonderful news!
I have suffered with kidney stones for 50 years and knowing the pain and inconvenience to a busy work schedule have helped fund urology departments in Peru where I have lived and suffered stones for many years.
In England the cheaper, mobile, lithotripsy equipment used several time a week at Torbay allowed me to live a normal life as a farmer after 40 years of having to expel kidney stones naturally. I am eternally grateful to Torbay Hospital for providing this service and being pain free for many years.
However in 2020 I was referred for lithotripsy at Derriford. On my third treatment I was treated, in my opinion, poorly. I was treated by a surly radiographer who took an X-ray and told me he could not operate on my stones as they were too small. Generally this is true as 6mm can normally always be passed naturally. But there was no doubt in mind that from the very off the lithotripsy radiographer had no desire to help me. It made me wonder whether I had inadvertently upset him or anyone else in my previous visit? Without showing me the X-ray he got me out the wet chair and sent me packing home. I was surprised and questioned him about the size of the stone but he was adamant it was too small. This was odd because I had got X-rays taken not long before in another hospital that showed large stones.
A few days/week later at home two stones measuring 10.5mm and a few 5mm or 6mm stones came out in a most excruciating way only kidney stone sufferers know. I give this radiographer the benefit of the doubt that his new expensive X-ray lithotripsy equipment was not working well that day and recorded only a small stone when in fact they were large. I also give him the benefit of the doubt he was personally having a bad day. Being a radiographer gives one a great sense of power. Power in hospitals should be used wisely.
I am of course still a great admirer of the NHS and look forward to seeing more lithotripsy machines rolled out over the South West of England.

Professional and friendly staff (a family),I came with kidney stone twice this year and the way they treated me was like I was part of the family. Thank you team for all the support and for taking my pain away.

I was in the Hartor ward and i can wholeheartedly say every member of staff was amazing. From nurses to porters to food staff. I was in for 5 nights. The food was at a surprisingly good standard. Also tea or coffee whenever i wanted one. Doesn't get much better than that. They were so clean. Bed change everyday everything was serialized daily. Covid safe. What really stood out was the amazing nurses. They dealt with me perfectly. I don't have any complaints. In the NHS we trust.

Thank you to all the staff at the breast screening unit. Very well organised and wonderful staff. My partner was overwhelmed with the quality of the service and care provided. So proud of our NHS, especially since my feelings towards it had waned somewhat recently for various reasons. The reality is, is that it provides a top quality service when you need it most and you never know when you will, but it is so reassuring to know that this marvellous institution is there at our time of need providing a truly incredible world class service to our loved ones. You just don’t realise how important life is until it is threatened.

Told I would get CT scan results today. 4/2/ 2022 now after waiting all day I've been told I've to return 7/2/2022 for results. Not happy.

Williams wife Karen was admitted into postbridge ward Deriford hospital as a day case under the gyni department.
Thank you to all you Angels on the ward full of compassion dignity and respect carnt praise you enough you all should be very proud of the service you are providing.
Thank you to the Anethestist and his team also for your dignity and respect you showed me and making me feel so relax.
Last but not least thank you to my consultant Mss Smyth and her team for such compassion respect and loveliness you showed me you should be very proud for the service you provided me with today I felt safe and respected.

Just wonderful. I have been to this hospital twice, first for general surgery and the second to donate a kidney, and the whole process was first class. There was just one sister in the surgical unit that was rude and unpleasant, but the rest of the staff were amazing. Very hard working, kind and professional. I am an ex nurse and I can honestly say it put my faith back in the NHS again after working and being a patient in other places with poor quality care.

Arrived at A & E at 11.25 this morning.I was seen by wonderful nurse.who took my details. She sent me for an x-ray!, which showed I had a fracture in my hand. She cared for me the whole time I was there.Which by the time they had plastered my arm was 2 hrs. I think in that busy part of the hospital was brilliant.Well done to Derriford .You certainly deserve a good review.

I have always received superb care at Derriford Hospital. Having just spent three days in and out of the Ambulatory Care Unit my views are much stronger than a five star.
I was taken care of by a superb team and among all the excellent and kind professionals was Nurse Practitioner Anna Jones who was so caring, kind and professional.
Thank you all
David

Thank you to all the staff at Crownhill ward who took great care of my dear mum Margaret. You did all you could to to make her comfortable and to allow a large family see her regularly through this most terrible time. Thank to the great help and advice from St Lukes staff also, you were all great.
Thank you

I've been in hospital a lot of times and most of the times I've had horrible experiences. I was currently put in the hallway of A and E majors (where the dangerous and more important emergencies are taken) and I couldn't breathe but was left until someone noticed I was turning blue and was taken into recuss. I was finally cared for and i was taken care of brilliantly but sadly that's the only time I've felt safe. I've now had a large operation cancelled again after waiting for over a year! It could be great if it had more funding and more staff as it's extremely understaffed.
G. D.
Shame not more people wear masks in the hospital. Friendly staff.

The staff at Derriford hospital are really professional, dedicated, unsung heroes. Today they went above and beyond, to take care of my friend who had suffered some sort of heart failure at the weekend. I escorted him to the AAU & they really were great. The hospital is very clean, easy to negotiate around & clearly sign posted. The staff provide great service & even broke down the technical jargon so we fully understood what was happening. Whatever these staff are paid is not enough! Hold your heads high guys! You do an amazing job. 😊

Excellent support and service after the loss of a loved one. My Nan sadly passed away this morning and was taken to Derriford hospital. I contacted the hospital to ask if I could see my Nan's body; the staff at reception were really helpful and the senior nurse, Sue, contacted me to arrange a convenient time for me to see the body. Sue was really kind and sympathetic, and the reception staff were also very helpful. My son then came home and wanted to see his Nan and the staff again were more than helpful and agreed to allow my son to see his Nan. I'm sure the staff do not realise what the service they offer means to us, after just losing our Nan. We are very grateful.

An outstanding Hospital in Difficult times. When the sleazy Plymouth paper keeps knocking it. Maybe there Journalists should spend a month on a Covid ward or working working in A & E. To everyone in The NHS and private medical secture . I thanks you all on behalf of my friends. Stop buying the seriously bad papers

Having spent the last six months in and out of Derriford I would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff for looking after me.
It is far from perfect and I do have concerns for the health and well-being of the nursing staff. No one should be expected to WORK a twelve hour shift - and these nurses do work their shifts. Surely they are a valuable asset to the NHS. So why aren't we protecting them? I don't wish to be mean or judgemental but I would estimate that the majority of nurses at Derriford are overweight - why? Sorry, it had to be said. Administration should be aware of this problem and looking after this great asset. Perhaps we don't have enough nurses in the NHS because you're burning them out too quickly !
Thanks again, I'm very grateful for your care.
P. P.
My husband went in for a spine op yesterday. The staff could not have done more to re-assure and look after him. Excellent care at all levels and very informative. Hugely grateful for these dedicated professionals.
S. M.
Taken in as a trauma patient after I was knocked off my bike, fractured my leg and needed surgery. Caring, considerate staff from start to finish and follow-up arranged for me before discharge. As with all interactions with people in life, treat people as you would wish to be treated and this is no exception. These are hard-working, caring and experienced professionals and they are doing their utmost to help each patient. I feel lucky that Derriford was the closest hospital when my accident happened.
P.
Absolutely brilliant staff. Performed my partners cesarean expertly and provided excellent hospitality. The Surgeons and their team worked incredible. Respect to our NHS!
G. T.
This is my first time giving feedback about Derriford Hospital, this was my 3rd Surgery and I must say that I have had the best care ever on Freedom Unit Level 3. The Staff, Staff Nurse, HCA, Doctor, Surgeon was excellent! They are not rushing you to go home or anything, they are willing to keep you if you're still not feeling better, They will understand you as much as possible because it's for your own good! THEY ARE JUST FAB! Thank you for all the staff's who took care of me 😊❤️
A. P.
My son receives the best care whenever we go to Derriford Hospital.
We use the hydrotherapy pool every Saturday for my sons swimming lessons, a nice clean and spacious area.
Parking is plentiful and facilities are good, especially the new restaurant.
J. L.
I attended Freedom Unit on 26th February with my Mother. She was under the care of Mr G Price. I would like to express my thanks to all the staff who looked after her. They treated her with the greatest care and dignity, provided for all her care requirements. Many thanks to you all.
G. F.
Some places should get 5 stars whilst other places like A&E deserve only 1 star. This shows the varying treatment you will receive here. Expect long waits. In fact expect your whole day to be taken up. Parking can be a total nightmare. It's not unusual to spend more than half an hour queuing for a spot to park in. You will also need to pay for parking. There are a handful of disable spot which are free, but the main disable parking you will have to pay for.
Entry is on level 6 with a cafe which is decent enough. A M&S is just outside and is a good place to get some takeaway food.
Staff are generally helpful, that is the doctors and nurses. Admin, reception can be another matter. There are some good and bad.
As for A&E. If you need to go there then if possible go in on an ambulance and you will get seen. Reception are doing triage. It's a bloody disgrace. Overall Derriford is a good hospital with an extremely poor A&E. You have been warned!
P.
Went in for a kidney removal. Complications set in & was on ICU for two days staff excellent. Then moved to Lynher ward for three days staff & service excellent nothing was to much trouble. Then we came to leaving, started at 12.30 finally left at about 18.30 due to drugs being waited for. This is a rediculous situation & wonder if Lloyds Pharmacy has not put resources into this & put profit over service?
P. S.
My mother spent approximately 4 weeks at the hospital spending times on a variety of wards, before passing away.
I spent approx 5 days visiting her over two weeks.
My mother was a very demanding person (as am I). Things were always either right or wrong.
In her final days she couldn't say enough good things about the care she had received from all staff.
I would like to add my particular thanks to the domestic staff, carers, nurses and consultants on Torcross and Bickleigh wards. Your professionalism and caring on those difficult last days was very much appreciated.
My mother was very well looked after.

Not a place you want to go but when you need to all the staff are incredibly kind and nice. Over the years i have visited a few departments and received excellent treatment. Very clean where it needs to be. I just dont know how they cope being the only hospital for a large city. The only downside for me is the pharmacy. Way to small and very busy. Not enough seats especially when people feel ill.
m. S.
Today 22nd of July 2019 I had a blood test done called short synacthcen test. Unfortunately for all the stuff and myself I had some kind of allergic reaction for the drug and I lost the conscious and had to spend few more hours in hospital.Just wanted to thank all the stuff, amazing NHS doctors and nurses to look after me amazingly and being so nice and helpful.
Physician junior doctor Matthew and nurse Ruth or Rachel (filipinian). It was in Tamar Ward. They made sure I was ok before I left as I was on my own and no family in uk.
I'm here 15 years and since day 1 I can't complain once.
Thank you so much again for being amazing ❤

I'd like to say a huge thankyou to the staff at Derriford Hospital for looking after me while I was in there. They are all overworked and under paid.
I was taken in by ambulance on Wednesday evening and the care I received from then on in was first class.
After being in A&E (which was really busy) for a some hours I was transfered to SAU where after a couple of hours I was taken to have an emergency operation after recovery I was transfered to Wolf Ward until they discharged me earlier this evening.
I would like to say a big Thankyou to a nurse called Ellen who has been there every time I have been taken ill into hospital over the last 3 months and she remembered me.
D. G.
It is now 8 years since my Partner received treatment for a heart attack and received 3 stents. The care and speed of attention to save his life was absolutely outstanding. Nearing another Christmas with him I feel it is only right to express how grateful I am for the medical attention he received .
Merry Christmas to you all.

This hospital is great, parking is horrendous but it is the only hospital in the city. The lifts are pretty scary but there is a choice of steps too! The nurses and doctors are really kind, supportive and caring and show so much support to those really poorly and worried about their illness/condition! Keep up the good work Derriford
H. C.
Amazing staff, who looked after my daughter so well whilst we were on holiday! The consultant on woodcock ward was amazing!!! My daughter is on the mend and desperate to become a nurse on this ward one day! Thank you everyone for helping from the moment we entered reception to the minute we left! 5* care! Thank you again Brooke is smiling again!!!!

I was referred to A&E by the NHS 111 Helpline on the morning of Sat 29 Sep 2016. I have nothing but praise for the staff who attended to my needs, from initial Reception through Triage, Medical Assessment and finally Short Stay overnight ward accommodation.
The examination & reassurance I was given by nurses, doctors and consultants right down the line was professional, informative, wide-ranging & thorough. Similarly the ward medical and domestic staff created an environment of real patient caring.
Bravo Zulu all the way.

Fracture clinic for Achilles rupture.
Everyone was so friendly, efficient and caring.
They were so busy in the fracture clinic but you didn't feel rushed and the explained everything so well. A thank you to them .
The only let down was the physio who didn't seem properly trained in fitting or knowing how to use the vacoped boot. We luckily watched the video ourselves when we got home, but until we see our own physio I have no confidence in any of the instruction the initial physio told us.
J. S.
Everyone from tea ladies , nurses, surgeon etc literally everyone I met on Lynher ward were amazing. So friendly and helpful. I can't praise these people enough. Wonderful amazing people. So greatful for the 1st class care I was given.

My daughter recently spent 7 weeks at Derriford Hospital on Hexworthy Ward.
Not only did she receive excellent and life saving health care, she was treated with such care and compassion as well as laughter by all the staff on Hexworthy Ward. I can't thank them enough for the peace of mind i felt when going home at night. I could at least rest for a few precious hours knowing that all her needs would be catered for. Every single one of you is an Angel in my eyes.

First class, amazing customer service ethos throughout all areas, disciplines and professions. They diagnosed a cancer that had been missed elsewhere even though they were not meant to be looking for it. Superfast process and tests leading to surgery within a month.
Everyone we came across from the car park attendants through to the consultant surgeon and every level in between seemed to be totally dedicated to the individual patients care, comfort and complete wellbeing.
The little army who clean the place at night smile when you pass them in the corridors! Simply amazing! The food is excellent, it's recognisable for a start, served hot when it should be, tasty, healthy and without exception served with a smile by friendly, helpful and understanding staff.
The quality of the nursing a staff has got to be experienced to be believed. They care, they comfort, they listen, they understand, they have empathy in abundance and are quite simply the best ambassadors for the most honourable profession.
Not to be forgotten is the leadership of this organisation, where else would you find the Chief Executives Office situated basically on the shopfloor with a sign on the door which says, welcome please come in. No hiding away in an ivory tower, inaccessible and remote but there right next to the public restaurant and staff canteen.
I am considering having a medical alert bracelet inscribed with the message
"If I'm ill take me to Derriford"

Been here numerous times for physiotherapy. The hospital is huge, and it is easy to get lost in it. The physiotherapy department is pretty good as I've been using it on a weekly basis now since November. The majority of staff are nice and helpful. There is also a cafe but has a good selection of hot drinks and food. I admit for a hospital it could be alot cheaper, but then again the NHS is in complete financial crisis at the moment so I guess it is understandable.

I cannot praise this place enough. Angelic people, who helped my grandmother recover after her stroke. The help and care we received at Pembury Ward is beyond words. The care and compassion received, being treated with dignity and respect and their understanding of individual needs not only for my grandmother but also for the extended family was amazing. Me and my family greatly appreciate what you have done for us. Your kindness was at times almost unbearable. Thank you so much.
l. b.
Reliable out-patient services. Busy A&E department. Nursing staff are generally overworked, but still manage to push through. Food staff on wards can be rude and unhelpful at times. Cleaning and porter staff always polite, helpful, and friendly.

From the Time I was Booked in until Time I was Discharged I was taken through every Process with the Upmost Respect, Not to Mention the Friendliness of all Staff from Fal To Postbridge. Unfortunately my Op was later than Planned but was well informed from numerous Staff so I just Relaxed and waited Patiently. These Things Can’t Be helped and the Staff do their Best to Accomadate everyone. There’s only so much One can Actually do when there’s a Bed Shortage. Anyway I fell asleep and No Sooner I woke up I was Taken to The Theatre. Excellent Theatre Staff as Always as I’m Not New to DERRIFORD Theatres. A Different Anaesthetist today as I’ve had the Same one a Couple of Times. But again another Nice efficient Anaesthetist ( Sorry Can’t Remember her Name ) Blame my Age Lol!
Anyway Then as Onto POSTBRIDGE for Recovery & the Staff again we’re so Accomadating and Attentive. Someone was always there to ask if I was or in Pain or if just anything they could do. Even to Drinks, Sandwiches & Biscuits. I know that’s always offered but I’m still Grateful. I wasn’t rushed at all and I was able to be Fully Rested before I could Leave. This was a Smaller Op compared to others I’ve had Plus it was Daycase and I admit I’ve been Rushed in the Past when Not been at all Ready. However Like I said Earlier I do unsterstand that’s Not down to the Staff on Wards. But there are so many Patients going through each Day that Beds are Nearly Always an Issue.
Obviously as a Patient I’d Love that to Improve as I’m Sure many Patients out there Naturally do also and I’m Sure the Staff feel Exactly the Same and It must be Frustrating they can’t themselves Change and It’s Also A Shame for Patients whom Obviously for Lots Of Reasons delays Cause Distress. And I get that but I also Get how Frustrated the Staff get too.
All I know is My experience today was Very Chilled in Recovery and the Whole Day in General. Maybe it was that my Op was later in Day and in Past I’ve never had a Later Op.
I want to Thank KAREN ( HCA) on POSTBRIDGE and NURSE with Short Blond Hair ( Sorry did Not get her Name ) However they Both Cared for me. Not only Effiently But morso with Friendliness and had Caring Personalities and nothing was too much Trouble. They allowed me to Rest until Ready which normally I’m not used to as I explained and that’s Not a Complaint but Obviously depends on How many in & Out each Day.
Honestly Speaking though everyone should be Fully Recovered before they Leave Hospital. As I said I’ve had Major Ops and felt Rushed at Times. Re-cooperation Can’t Really be Rushed as we are all different and all Respond Differently. As an Example: This Op I had Today I’ve had Before and is Normally Straightforward for My Recovery But I’m a Bit Older and Other have Things going on and felt quite unwell as appose to last time it was Done. I’m Sore and Extremely Washed out but as I stated I’ve had Many Ops and a Couple Close together. So takes its Toll somewhere. I know DERRIFORD ain’t the only Hospital Struggling for Beds. I visit another Hospital in London & again they have Same Issues.
My Experience in Whole from DERRIFORD has Pleased with Care & Kindness I have Received
M. S.
I was admitted to Norfolk ward on Thursday 4th June. I cannot express my gratitude enough. Every member of staff treats me with the utmost care . The treatment I received was second to none . Thank you all . Marlene Stephenson

What makes this Hospital 5 stars is the NHS staff and Doctors. The facilities could do with some investment but overall the staff takes good care of you better than some modern Hospitals in larger cities.
J. E.
Currently staying which my son in the pediatric ward. From the very beginning the staff were incredibly friendly, from doctors to nurses. A wonderful hospital made because they have wonderful staff.
A. S.
After an MRI scan in Barnstaple showed a slipped disc pressing on sciatic nerve I was rushed to Plymouth Hospital by ambulance over a week ago for emergency op to remove the disc. I was fast-tracked and well looked after the whole way. Both hospitals and staff were marvellous. I received the best care, attention, & service. I observed and noticed a lot. There was one error, but no one's perfect, they all do their best despite budget cuts and staff shortages. People should stop complaining about the NHS. Most of it is down to patient attitude, severity of the condition and nature of problem.

Derriford is an alright hospital. The wait for a doctor can be very long but sometimes it is not. i went for an x ray, the wait was 15 minutes and the People doing the x ray where nice people. i am glad we have free healthcare in the uk

If you suffer from depression or need help seeking support outside of workplace from the ages 16 and over. Why not pop into the Jan Cutting Centre at the Health and Wellbeing at Scott Business Park Tuesdays and Fridays: 7:30pm - 10:30pm. Saturdays and Sundays from 5pm - 9pm for a chat with Headspace Mental Health team from Colebrook. Its been open since July 2018 and are seeking new customers too. I reccomend this to all. Its helpful and amazing staff there are warm welcoming to you if new or past customers
All staff are friendly towards patients and visitors.
I have Special Needs and had internships at the hospital to help me gain skills and experience for when applying for jobs with Project SEARCH team and even though I didn't get a work placement at the hospital, I keep looking for employment like anyother person who's looking for work just like myself and still achieving high set goals to gain full qualifications and experience for a dream job I love .
If your child or you know someone with special needs or a disability and is looking for a paid job or to gain experience and to earn skills to help them achieve their skills contact Pip Critten or Pluss South West for more info. The age range they take on is from 17-25 year olds.

From start to finish including tumour removal from brain, excellent health care in every way. Will always recommend this hospital and the local ambulance service. Very very good. I have used hospitals around the UK and right now I wished I had been here instead of other hospitals for previous admissions
T.
Good hospital for me and for my dad. He had a great care here. I can't say anything wrong. Staff very professional, friendly and caring. I don't know why here is so many bad reviews.
M. E.
This Hospital is overwhelmed and understaffed, however that doesn’t change the treatment you get from the incredible staff here. You can expect long waits in a&e but you are always treated with great care and respect. Hats off to these guys.
J. B.
The care I received from the paramedics, A&E and the other departments over the last 2 days has been phenomenal, I am so grateful to all of the doctors and nurses.
p. A.
This is not so much about the hospital itself but the 'facilities '. Can't believe there isn't a small Boots or similar & no small M&S just for nightware/underwear!! Missing a trick
J. R. R.
I went into accident and emergency yesterday and from the first encounter in triage to the last doctor I saw today was excellent ; everything was organised not too much waiting around , I stayed in Tavy Ward overnight and I couldn’t fault anything excellent!!!! And thank you to all the hard working pleasant upbeat staff.
M. F.
When to A&E for some help right from the outset was treated with respect and dignity. A huge shout out for sister Kirsty, and nurses Ryan, Katrina Eddie Charlotte and Maggie , also doctors Nick and others so many names... Nick from pysciatry was also fantastic. All on the clinical desisions unit ward. They kept things all good and positive. Great people clearly love thier jobs and patients. And of course everyone else involved in my care did a great job just can't remember everyone's names. Will miss them all great people great hospital. Pros at bolonase transplants !
A. D. S.
Can't praise more all the staff at the hospital. Absolutely amazing.
Made me feel so welcome safe and cared for.
Simple the best, like Tina Turner sings.

I disclocated and fractured my ankle last week. All through the paramedic, A&E, xray, anaesthetist, theatre, recovery and ward staff journey everyone was caring, friendly and had a smile on their face which when under the kind of stress and lack of resources these people are is a miracle. Well done Derriford!!
D. S.
My daughter came in for an operation and it went as well as it could of. The staff were friendly and very helpful and made my daughters stay go as well as it could.

after spending 3 weeks in Truro I was finally transferred to Derriford to have a very large empyema removed, 2 drains put in. The ward was really nice and quiet and the staff were all brilliant as was the food. 3 days later and one drain removed and today the other one should be coming out leaving me on Fenatnyl painkiller until tomorrow when I can hopefully be discharged. Came in with one lung, leaving with two, great job done by all, many thanks!
C. B.
Hospital that is under tremendous pressures, yet the doctors nurse's and all other support staff polite and well presented, with a quite determination to make things as relaxed and friendly as possible for patients and visitors.
t. b.
The staff at Derriford are hard working, kind and dedicated. I always feel comfortable and safe when being cared for by Derriford staff.

Very good and caring professional staff

Derriford Hospital is a good hospital located just off of Tavistock Road, so has good links to anywhere in the city. There is a car park outside and you get charged to park there. There are many lifts inside the building, for those who use a wheelchair or can't use stairs. There is a Warren's bakery on the entrance floor, but the main restaurant is on Level 7. There is an Accident & Emergency Department and the Royal Eye Infirmary is located in the building. There are also good bus links to the hospital, which links far suburbs to the hospital for those who have short access to the hospital. And, it's the only hospital in Plymouth, so finding a place to park is a struggle.
E. R.
Got dealt with fast when needed and was happy to wait on other occations when it was not an emergency. Happy with this as when it was my turn they didnt rush me in and out. More after care than i ever expected. My broken thumb is now back to normal.

A great Hospital that get to many knocks by a rubbish local rubbish press. We thank you all in the NHS and private sector
D. B.
Having taken little man to Ed a couple of times, they are good. Working at the place I can only say the ward and clinic staff work hard and offer there best, not enough staff and to many manager's.
T.
I attended the AAU department after a TIA.All staff I found to be friendly, polite, very professional and caring. My consultant was outstanding and described all the results from MRI,Ultrasound,Bloods & ECG in simple terms and I left with a positive attitude.Thank You all very much.

This is a good hospital located centrally to the most of Plymouth, with the A386 road/Tavistock Road at least a mile away, and the A38 road/The Parkway at least two miles away.
The hospital itself has large car parks located all around the hospital area, which are not free to use. There is currently a multi-storey car park under construction, with some floors of the car park already available to use to park your vehicle.
There is a major bus stop outside, which connects to most suburbs in the city, such as Estover, the City Centre and St Budeaux.
There is also an M&S FoodHall just beside the main entrance, and a Subway restaurant, Costa Coffee and Pizza Hut delivery restaurant near the multi-storey car park.
Inside the hospital, there is a Warren’s Bakery on the Main Entrance/Level 6 floor, as well as a WHSmith convenience store.
There is also a large restaurant with lots of seating on the Level 7 floor.
The Maternity ward is on Level 5.
The Royal Eye Infirmary is on Level 3.
A&E is on Level 6.
The Children’s ward is on Level 12.
