Stayed here for a night. They have a restaurant and a bar in the building. The rooms and amenities were satisfactory and reception is open 24 hours and staff is attentive. However washrooms are small and uncomfortable. There is no lift, even though you are living in 4th floor you have carry your luggage all the way up. Popular tourist places are nearby and within walking distance. All in all satisfactory experience.

The staff is very friendly, good price and nice area well connected in terms of public transport as it's a quote short walking distance from Temple (Circle and District line) and Holborn (Central and Piccadilly line). The rooms are clean and the beds are fairly comfortable. It's a hostel so don't expect to sleep hugged to prince Charles (which to be fair would be awkward as I'd spend the night awake staring at his ears) on a mattress that change shape according to your position during sleep to optimize the R.E.M. phase but if your expectations in terms of comfort are realistic they will be met or exceeded. If you hate the stairs and/or are carrying a heavy lugjgage, it's probably not the best place j. On a positive note, when I was checking out a member of staff saw me struggling and brought my luggage from the room to the reception: I salute you with genuine respect and gratitude on my heart: I wish I asked what your name was and send a positive feedback to your boss: in the past I've been working in places where and email from a happy customer meant extra money on that week's payslip?

Nice people, the hotel is tidy and the common rooms are beautiful. Wifi not very good. The breakfast is not good, but I did not expect to have one at this price... A good address!

Really decent simple little hotel!
We stayed in room 34, the room was very simple, comfortable and nice. Bed was nice and firm but not springy, very comfortable. Shared bathroom/toilets were very very clean, excellent shower,. Very cheap for central London prices and deffo not disappointing :)

Good basic hotel in the centre of London
Clean room not ensuite but basin in the room and a towel
No lift
Tea and coffee making facilities in the room

I would say it is one of the rare hotels that have met my expectations. I was very surrprised on Their service in a positive way and would definitely recommend it. An extra plus is their location witch is basicaly across London Eye.

Fantastic value for money, Great staff... And best of all Location location location.. Will definitely be back next year..

Fantastic Indian food in down to earth surroundings. Well worth a visit, recommended.

Best Hotel I have ever stayed in! Highly recommended!... Great staff and rooms really good size and very clean... Will definitely be staying there again

Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Good location, in the very heart if all the sights. Breakfast is included. I was allowed to leave my luggage before checking in and after checking out. I also was allowed to spend time in the lounge before my flight. There is wi fi, but only in the lounge.
No kitchen, but you're welcome to use a microwave or a fridge.

I was there for 9 days in June. My first hostel experience. Quaint, simple clean bedroom shared with 2 others. I'm sure I was the oldest person there (61). The staff was INCREDIBLY helpful and kind. I was jet lagged and disorganized, brought too much luggage and guitar.(busking) They offered places to store so I didn't have to haul up 5 floors. Everyone was SO gracious, great tender at the lounge. Location perfect.

I attended a wedding here 2 years ago honestly the best place I can think of to host a wedding the atmosphere was amazing and the scenery I still remember to this day
R. A.
A very basic but clean room with a comfortable bed. The shared bathroom facilities were adequate. I skipped breakfast so can't comment on the quality of the food. Staff at check in and check out were very friendly and informative. The main selling point of this place, of course, is the price. At £50-60 for a single room, it's significantly cheaper than even the cheapest "proper" hotels in the area and makes for a good crash pad for the night.

The India Club restaurant in the hotel was great. Good food and reasonable prices in a very lively but no-frills dining room...Friday night the dining room noise was pretty unbearable but we soldiered on for the food and experience. The bar one floor down seemed quieter and more cozy though with a more limited bar snack menu...if the dinig room is too noisy next time we'll head yo the bar for a lighter meal.
B. D.
A cheap and cheerful hostel, room was basic but clean, with fresh bedding and a clean towel.
Bathroom facilities all seemed clean but are due an update. If you are very tall or of fuller figure the shower is a bit of a tight fit. Anyone over 6' will have to bend down to get under the shower.
Nice extra was the free breakfast (toast and cereal)
You will need a £10 refundable deposit for the key.

The location is great. As for hostel it wasn't so bad, the cleaner cleaned every day, there was never shortage of toilette paper and the cleaning facilities were okay. The walls are indeed thin however we still got good night sleep. The down point was breakfast; make sure you go get it early otherwise there might not be much left. No eggs, no fruit, no yogurt, no ham... Felt a bit like the jar of nutella is trying to make up for lack of everything. Otherwise an ok hostel experience.
K. S.
I stay at this hotel for work regularly and find the staff to be helpful. The rooms are of a good quality (some quite cramped) and very comfortable beds. The room service menu could be improved but otherwise a very good all rounder of a hotel.
S. F.
I was not sure when I arrived, however the location, price and amenities are absolutely perfect for short stays in London, also I loved the little bar/breakfast area. Very comfortable, lots of stairs, very clean although in need of a make over. Excellent friendly staff. Very much recommend, will return! 😀

This review is on the restaurant. Back in the 1960s the Indian High Commission, just across the road, had a canteen in the basement. This was the place to eat tasty food at reasonable prices on London. When this closed many staff ate at the restaurant in the Hotel Strand Continental. Even today this is the place for tasty simple food, and for the health conscious diner the dishes don't come in a pool of oil. Don't expect any frills.
M.
The decor and furnishings are worn, tired and dated, which some visitors do find very off-putting. On the other hand this gives it a sense of (Indian) history and nostalgia: a place deliberately unrestored in absolute defiance of the consumerist materialist transitory nature of those around it - which are also far, far more expensive. The rooms are tiny, and not en suite, but very clean. Ditto toilets and bathrooms. The bar and restaurant are packed - you must book - the place is an essential haunt of those in the know. Breakfast is basic continental. Very basic: but then it doesn't cost you the earth. Nor is it going to cost the Earth the earth, either. Give it a try and don't expect the Savoy. The staff are great.
J. C.
Ticks all the boxes. I stayed in a double room for one night, and it was perfectly functional and comfy. Breakfast provided was better than expected, however the vegan soy milk provided was out of date! This was very frustrating, especially considering I had emailed in advance to ask for soy milk.
Apart from this, I had no issues with the hotel! I was pleasantly surprised at the shared facilities, as although my room shared a bathroom with 4 others, these were kept clean and were always free
R. D.
It really depends on your expectations whether or not this is a good place for you. Location is amazing, right near everything and close to transit. The staff are friendly and helpful. As a solo female traveller, I never felt unsafe. A little irritating that there is no wifi in the rooms, but this just forces you to get out a bit, so not a big deal. Room was small, but clean. It is a bit dated, but really in the end you just can't beat the price and location.
N.
Good if you choose this hotel for the budget (around 70 pounds the room)
Veey small rooms. Toilets and showers shared by floors (two of each by floor).
Friendly staff.
Very well placed in London, close to Covent garden.
S. M.
Best for your budget hostel? The location is great close to many things to do. The room I stay at was small. Also, there's no elevator so if you have a big luggage prepare to carry it. The beds were ok and clean sheets. I only stayed one night so I dont have much to say
F. W.
Strand Continental is a cheap hotel in the heart of London. It’s close to most major attractions. Rooms are very small, coming with nothing more than a sink, a wardrobe and a drawer. No WiFi on rooms, only on the bar and restaurant. Drinks are not to expensive. Great place for a visit on a budget, as everything around it is much more expensive.
R. D.
I didn't go to the hotel but to the public Indian restaurant on the second floor. Very unusual step back in time a bit, old photos on the wall, somehow atmospheric. Food very good a limited menu but really enjoyable some of the best Indian food I have had and reasonable prices.
S. E. G.
I had to change rooms to a single room, which cost more, but was worth the peace of mind. It was clean, facilities were adequate, and there was a restaurant on site that was really good.
M. F.
The staff were too relaxed and felt abandoned. Service was slow and the food isn't the best. Not my personal go to but if you need a quick pit stop it's worth the visit. The venue is beautiful with the rooms decently maintained.
C. S.
Convenient location, but not at all comfortable.
Booked through Airbnb, we spent the weekend in London. It was awesome, never have been here before, but the hotel wasn't as good as I hoped. It's noisy, has 6 floors (with the elevator being broken) and we were in a room way too small for 4 people. We agreed not to excuse ourselves everytime we bumped into each other, that would've been too annoying.
Breakfast is free, it was all right (and unlimited).
B. C.
This place is exactly what it should be. It has the feel of a million stories. Cheap rooms with just enough. Sinks in rooms. Nice window views. Friendly staff. Excellent and cheap Indian food if you get the basic vegetarian dish.
R. C.
With a convenient central London location, this hotel is suited for those that prefer low cost over amenities.
Perfectly functional as a place to rest overnight but if you're expecting luxury you'll need to look elsewhere (and pay significantly more for it).
The hotel also contains the near legendary Curry Club which offers some of the best Indian cuisine to be found in London. Again, very no frills, but the quality and good value of the food more than makes up for this.
E. M. E.
5th floor room. Clean, but nothing amazing.
No WiFi unless you're in the shared room. loud neighbours. Think of this as a hostel but a private room.
Location is great and price considering that is good. But also don't expect much when it comes to the quality.
T. U. U.
Good location but a bit expensive for what you get. Breakfast was pretty basic but the worst part was that I was put on the 5th floor with no elevator and I had a ton of heavy luggage. They do have a storage room on the first floor which helped but there was a massive heat wave and with no AC and just a small window that didn't provide any airflow, it felt like a sauna every night and must have been 30C in our room. Sure it would be much better in the winter or a cooler summer.
H. D.
Get what you pay for. Cheap private room with shared bathrooms. Not soundproof (noisy traffic outside, ask for a room away from the road). Free breakfast is good. 24hr access. Perfect if you just need to crash for a night after a work party. Definitely not a romantic getaway.
T. k. G.
The gentleman who was on the desk all night was wonderful and helpful, my room was warm, clean and comfortable. Toilets were clean. For the price I'm more than happy and would gladly stay again.
S. M.
Great location for a concert I attended at Somerset House. Central, plenty of amenities. Simple but good breakfast. Nice history to the building too. A bit warm but it was mid summer.
C. C.
Bed and breakfast in the heart of London at an affordable price. From here it is close to everywhere. Modest furnishings but clean, nice and calm. A very good service! My favorite place. Recommend!
D. C.
Reasonably priced and a simple place to lay your head down while travelling. The Indian Cafe restaurant in the Hotel is one of the oldest in the city. It's affordable and convenient. Plus the radiator in the room worked wonderfully, so cozy!
D. L.
Basic accommodation. Friendly staff. Cheap as chips. Linen clean. Showers work. What more do you need?
Ok...some of this is a repeat of what I wrote on the India Club review. But they're the same business anyway!
The room I am staying in is basic in the extreme - it's a shared hostel room after all. And I believe the other occupant is a woman...I couldn't say for sure as I haven't met her yet! So bear in mind that if you are booking a shared hostel room here you need to be prepared and bring your pyjama bottoms...no wandering around in the altogether, that would be inconsiderate. The beds in the hostel rooms are steel bunks, and the decor is not so much faded as bodged and peeling, with the occasional pretty mouldy bits in the shower rooms. All this said, it is less than £30 for a clean(ish) bed in central London with breakfast included. You get given a fresh sheet - which you make your own bed up with. You rent a towel for a couple of quid, and the shower -
which works and is a good temperature - has free shower gel AND soap!! This is a crazy place. But it's cheap. Friendly. And kind of awesome. I love it. And did I mention it is cheap. Really cheap. So don't complain about it. If you want frills. Go upmarket.
K. W.
Cheap and cheerful. Continental breakfast. Selection of teas or coffee. Cereals, yogurt, toast and preserves in the spacious lounge area. Bedrooms are basic some storage space, bed with duvet and single pillow. Small hand sink as well. A kettle and tea/coffee provided. My floor had three toilets and two shower rooms, again acceptable to above average. The big bonus is you are right on the strand in the heart of central London at an amazingly cheap rate. It ain't the Savoy but it's a whole lot cheaper too. In short the low cost offsets the basic bedrooms.
s. w.
An old fashioned Asian restaurant which hasn't changed in 50 years. Part of the hotel now, The India Club is a wonderful anachronism. Going up the worn lino stairs is like walking back in time to the 1960's. The food is good, too, and not expensive. No access for wheelchair users!
T. “. M.
We ate at the Indian restaurant. This is great value for a restaurant in this location. It is BYO drinks with no corkage fee. The service is not great, but not terrible. At times you feel you could be in an episode of Fawlty towers or back at school for a school dinner. It was a fun experience and the food was good enough to make us feel satisfied.
D. J. G.
Hotel Strand Continental was a great guest who kept the room clean with care for all of the appliances and amenities. We were able to communicate easily. He is a very considerate guest. Thank you Hotel Strand Continental, see you again!
V. G.
Great location very good prices for central london clean rooms showers. Very friendly and welcoming receptionist , the breakfast guy was so kind and helpful (and cute too ;) )The restaurant not very good thought but again quiet cheap. A very good stay. Recommended for short stay
V. K.
Location is one of the best in London. Center in the center😊
It is not luxurious, but for the price and Location - good.
People there were always helpful and friendly.
T. S.
Stayed here as a solo female traveller and felt very safe. The single rooms are worth the price and the bed was pretty comfy. Would definitely recommend!
Y. S.
Been coming to the India Club on the 2nd floor for years (since the 1980's in fact, when I worked in Kings College nearby). A varied menu that's incredibly good value for money, it has a fantastic late 1940s/1950s atmosphere with a small bar on the first floor. Great place but can get very crowded in the early evenings, such is it's popularity.
A. L.
For the price, the hotels location near the West End theaters cannot be beat. Though the actual rooms in terms of furniture and fixtures could use some touching up, the stay was otherwise very convenient and very comfy.
A. W.
Wow wow wow. Just opposite the lyceum this place is just overflowing with character. Yes a little tired but it doesn't matter. Brilliant Indian restaurant and bar with ludicrously cheap prices. A must visit and stay on anyone's bucket list. It's like stepping back in time to the 40's.
R. D.
The India Club restaurant is an amazing and unique place in London. The whole house has a long standing history as a place of friendship between India and the UK (the society based here was founded by Mr. Nehru and Lady Mountbatten after India's independence). It serves authentic and cheap Indian food in one of London's most expensive areas. The service and ambiance are very typical Indian, slightly shabby and outdated, but just like in any restaurant in Rajasthan or Kerala. The meals are served on metal dishes and the service is very minimal (don't be surprised to find the check on your table the minute you finish your meal). I loved it, it was the most authentic Indian experience I have had in London and would come back any time. Also check out the bar on the first floor.
M. B.
Had a great stay at this old school hotel. A little rough around the edges but that just adds to the character
R. L.
Location good but bunk bed - one of them on top doesnt have railings... is this even legal???
also shower - no hangers - i had to put clothes on the floor..
J. S.
Idea location, if planning to explore the London City Centre. Dorms are decent, if not great. Meets the bare minimum expectations. Cleanliness, a key consideration, was not an issue.
B. J.
Wonderful atmosphere very good service...and outstanding food....
T. C. W.
Went for curry and had the thali. Thoroughly delicious. Restaurant characterful. Get there early because it gets super busy. I'd definitely eat there again.
p. t.
Very welcoming and professional staff, great prize and amazing location.
C. Q.
Clean beds/toilets/bathrooms. Reliable bread/cereal breakfast. Only thing that could make it better is if they had wifi in the dorm rooms.
M. R.
Cheap accommodation in the heart of Strand. Pret, Tesco and many other useful stores just one step away. House of one of the most historical bar & restaurant in London - The India Club.
J. H.
Clean and comfortable, good rates for a quick overnight in Central London.
H. P.
It offers a free-breakfast.
But wifi is useless as its signal is so week inside the room!
But price is quite reasonable and it is a good place ro revisit.
A. J.
One of the only places in central London with real character. Not fine dining, but a wonderful place. Great bar for a quiet drink, too.
A. K. C.
A must visit if you intend to save the legacy of the great India Club Restaurant, an old vintage establishment you'll find in these premises...antique India in the heart of antique London, at unbelievably small tariffs.
N. B.
I stayed in a dorm, it was quite clean, not roomy. Location is good but I expected something fancier based on the pictures on airbnb
A. A.
Moderate place to stay with cheaper rate
E. G.
Simple hostel in a great location. Some staff friendly others not. Free breakfast! Not great bathrooms and not much of a hostel vibe.
H. L.
The Peanut butter was verry good but, the flush was not working !!
The view was great so I put one more star
J. W.
Excellent Job! I ordered flowers and candy totally blind by phone to be sent to my wife on Valentines Day staying at the Waldorf Hilton. I am in the U.S. and didn't know what to expect. They really came through. Thanks
Y. S.
The hotel was amazing location wise. Facilities were ok, except the wifi which wasn't available in the rooms, only in the common area.
Y. K.
It is ok for a night or two. Location is brilliant, staff member nice too, but everything else is not really.
L. H. F.
Very good location for a relatively low price. Bathroom drainage is poor so shower floods when used. Doors are thin
g. s.
It is clean and quiet hotel. Have been there for one night. Really nice and friendly staff.
K. I.
It's cheap but very nice hotel for staying in London. And very nice service.
S. R.
A very good position in the center, price acceptable being an expensive city. They don't have elevator and is clean even if not the newest
J. H.
The staff truly went above and beyond to solve a problem for me. Truly fair and courteous. Much better wifi than expected.
Q.
Clean rooms, friendly staff. Excellent value. Breakfast thrown in for good measure.
M. H.
Good food for a reasonable price in a unique setting. Slow service and a bit run down but otherwise good for a curry with some friends.
a.
Lovely simple Indian restaurant. No frills honest and cheap for location. Can be busy.
M. R.
Great old school Indian Restaurant. Basic but lovely food.
T. H.
It's a fine hostel at a great location. Don't expect to much from the rooms though.
S. C.
Huge fan of the India Club restaurant ( great value, no frills) and the lovely old fashioned bar.
A. S.
Hostel like accommodation in a great location with a very basic but good Indian restaurant and bar on the first two floors.
J. L.
Great food. Lovely staff. Proper hidden London gem. About as authentic as you get.
R.
The staff accommodated us despite being very busy. The food was lovely as always and we were served very quickly.
P. S.
Room was clean but very basic, hallways smelled of smoke but it hadn't permeated into the room at all.

M. D. K.
Cheap & cheerful. Surly service is more amusing than irritating and is more than made up for by the lovely food.
B. T.
The place is good for a nights stay, you will need to share bathroom.
G. F.
One of best hotels for location and ease of getting about in central London
T. H.
Great historical spot, but no elevators. Still, cheapest place in the strand

(Translated) It is a hostel, but without the benefits of a hostel. The room is clean, bed liners too. There is a sink in the room. Carpet in the rooms. You leave 10 £ to have the key, you get back when you return it. It has 6 floors, no elevator, suitcases should be carried up in hand. The stairs are short, old. The bathrooms are at the end of the corridors, have toilets and showers, both with reasonable space. There are no lockers that can be padlocks, no individual light or curtains and you can not sit on the bottom beds. There is no common area for cooking, sitting and meeting. There is no wi-fi in the rooms, only at the reception and in the restaurant. Breakfast is served from 7 to 9:30, after the Indian restaurant is open to the public, so we can not sit and stay there. In coffee we have soluble coffee, soluble tea, milk, juice, iced tea, breads, Nutella, sometimes peanut paste, sometimes cheese, yogurt, cereals (usually 3 types) and jellies. In the evenings the restaurant also operates, so it is possible to stay only in the rooms. The location is super central for anyone who wants to go on the main sights, so even worth it as you hardly need to use the train.

(Translated) Quality-Price: excellent.
Location: amazing.
The only bad thing is that the wifi can only be used at the reception and the signal in the rooms is very bad.
Cleanliness is standard, a shame to have shared the shared areas with dirty guests.
The hotel is not soundproof and being in a central area, noise can be annoying. But considering the price and the location it balances out.
Breakfast is very simple: toast, yogurt, juice, and cereal.
Very friendly staff.

Calidad-Precio: excelente.
Location: amazing.

(Translated) Inexpensive, great location.
From there, I don't care about the rest. The showers are hot, the toilets are working.
Room a little cramped and mattress not very comfortable but for the price, I am not complaining at all.
Breakfast that does not make you dream, but is eaten.

(Translated) The hotel is very well located. Very friendly staff and willing to help in everything. The bathrooms are small but clean. The room had a mattress with springs that stuck in the back when sleeping. The right breakfast: sliced bread and jam.
(Original)

(Translated) The location is very good, just great, within walking distance of the main attractions. As for the rest, such as the cleanliness of the room, breakfast, the condition of the shared showers and toilets are far from ideal.
(Original)

(Translated) The hotel is perfect. In less than 10 minutes one is e.g. Charing Cross Station, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden or the River Thames. The connection to public transport is easy. The staff is very helpful and the house has an excellent Indian restaurant and bar, both of which have a very interesting history. What the house will probably score only conditionally, are the rooms. These are however hygienically completely ok, place to sleep is enough, toilet / shower (in the corridor) work without problems.
We (family) felt very comfortable.

(Translated) The rooms are comfortable and clean but have no elevator. So climbing so many floors tired and with luggage makes the experience unfavorable. The other rooms are noisy and you can hear the detailed conversations of neighbors.
(Original)

(Translated) Good value for London. Elsewhere it would be too expensive for what it is. The rooms are small and not very well appointed and the lunch is more than rudimentary. On the other hand the location is optimal for visiting central London on foot and the personal is welcoming.

(Translated) The location is extremely good, subway nearby, central, in an excellent area, the best, the living area is shared with a bar, super homey space, armchairs to talk to taste, tables to eat, WiFi, TV, breakfast is included, simple but really very grateful, the bedrooms are very good, mattress and pillows to rest very well, the bathrooms for the time I went (winter), they were fine, but in summer they would be insufficient, one has a tub , the other is normal shower, the bad thing is that they do not have a lift, so it becomes very heavy, without a doubt, I would return. Reception 24 hrs
