Tried 5x cash for gold places b4 here and they all claim to give the best price in Colchester.
This gent gave the best offer and I didn't feel as down as I would have, had I sold to the others and just accepted going by their reviews.
A hidden gem
Many Thanks

Paul repaired my Dads old Rotary watch. Great service, great price and delivered on what he promised. I've used Chimes for a few years now and have never been let down. Highly recommended.

Excellent service and a willingness to listen to my exact requirements. They carried out the work on my 130 year old pocket watch with exceptional skill and in a timely manner. Communication was very good and their charges for work that is not easy to get done anywhere else I consider to be value for money. Don't go there looking for a cheap job, go there if you want a good job.

Today was the second time I took in my vintage Omega watch after it had stopped working and the second time I was helped by Chimes for a very reasonable price. Lovely service and really happy. They have earned a long term customer in me!

Speedy service at a very reasonable price. I brought a ring in on a Wednesday and got it back on the friday. I was also very happy that they took the time to buff and shine the piece at no extra cost. I was also personally contacted by the jeweler and informed when the ring was ready for collection. Professional and fantastic service- Highly recommend.

With reference to Mr Vaughan's review, we serviced his antique clock several years ago and he was very happy with our work. He recently came back to us with his 5 year old Timex watch because it was losing time. We replaced the battery but the watch did not work, and we did not charge him. We explained that due to the poor quality of this watch movement, it was not serviceable and there was no alternative replacement for it. He returned a few hours later demanding that we fix his watch and threatening us that he would otherwise leave bad reviews online and stand outside on a busy Saturday to deter our customers from walking into our shop. Despite our best efforts, his watch would not tick because the movement seized up so we explained again that we could not service the type of movement in this specific watch but advised him to send his watch directly to Timex to see if they could help. I have been in the watch, clock and jewellery trade for 26 years and repair and service hundreds of watches every year. Rarely, an item may be beyond repair. Our customers come to our shop as we have earned their trust based on the skilful service we provide and deliver.

I wanted to use Chimes just before Christmas to service a cherished WW2 Eterna watch and would have paid the (in retrospect rather steep) £200 quoted but unfortunately the business was about to have an extended period of closure. I did however want to give the business a try and, as a test of service brought along a new Vostok Kommandierskie, a cheap but very decent watch with a good, long produced workhorse movement much recommended on the watch forums. These are great but not regulated at the factory so one has to get a watchmaker to regulate it for decent accuracy. Now regulation is a job that most watchmakers will do for you within the hour and is a bread and butter job. I am a fairly shrewd judge of character (in the legal profession) and I could tell the gentleman was not interested in doing the job telling me he "normally only regulates watches after a service." For a new watch, come on now. However he grudgingly said he would look at it, it would take a few days and the cost would be £20. I could tell the gentleman thought that the job was low ticket and was not enthusiastic so I declined. In the end I called the chap (MJ Leach in Kent) who ended up doing the Eterna for me and he said he would do the job for me when next passing through for a tenner. Out of interest I called a few other small watchmakers recommended on the forums and they all quoted between £5 and £10 to put the watch on a timing machine and give it a fettle. I get the impression that this company is only really interested in big value jobs and that he thought the Vostok inferior and not worth his time ( I am sure he would feel the same about a Seiko 5 one of the best everyday watches you can buy) which is a shame and it left a bad impression. If you do a small job well big jobs will surely follow and you will have a satisfied customer. Sadly on both occasions I thought the service and approach from these guys was rather terse and unhelpful and it did not leave a very good impression so I won't be using them again. I don't want to leave a negative rating as I am sure this man is an excellent craftsman so I will leave a three star rating and hope he takes my points on board. It is the little jobs and the little things like the watchmaker who did the Eterna saying he thought the glass had a few scratches "so I found an original one lying about which I have fitted for you at no extra charge."

I have used chimes several times and been very happy with the service they have provided- first visit, they serviced and my prized vintage Longines automatic watch which had stopped working after getting water in it( oops). It wasn't a cheap service, but it was cheaper than any of the highstreet Jewellers and I would much rather spend my money in a local business than a High street chain who just send it off to the maker. Second time I went in to buy a new strap for the same watch having failed to find one the right width anywhere else- it was very good quality, reasonably priced and is very comfortable to wear. ( getting a proper Longines one was ridiculously expensive but they are an uncommon width ( no doubt on purpose!) and most recently i took the same watch back because I had once again got water in it! ( double oops) Mr Murphy was very helpful and got it working again speedily at absolute minimum of cost to me, but no doubt much fiddling about by him! Chimes is a lovely little shop I Would highly recommend them :) ps. they also sell lots of very pretty jewellery

I’m delighted with the fantastic service I’ve received from Chimes !
I originally left a bad review due to the shop being closed ( I apologise unreservedly)
I have since learned there was a genuine reason for closure ( his lovely wife walked out on him for no apparent reason after 10 years ) I’ve been there ! And know how he feels !
Women who needs them !
Highly recommended ! Friendly helpful Chap ! I wish him all the best .
