One of my first memories is going to this wonderful shop with my grandfather who bought a cane handled umbrella. Both my grandfathers bought their umbrellas and sticks there and later, I went with my father, who’d just been promoted to major in the Royal Armoured Corps, he bought a swagger stick, years later he purchased a walking stick. It was plain without embellishment l, but, the most beautiful hickory imaginable. I still have it today, alas too short for me and so now, when I am. In urgent need for a stout but elegant walking stick, where else would a gentleman go but to James Smith and Son.

The store retains its vintage look and and dusty charm. Expectably, prices are steep but it's well worth a visit even if you are not interested in making a purchase. Beautiful, old world store dating back to 1830 with a stunning range of walking sticks and canes. Many were handcrafted using unusual pieces of wood providing unique handles. Great gift idea for someone worth £250+ Also a good selection of premium umbrellas for men and women. Sales people were approachable and really knew the products.

After snapping the top spring on my (heavily used) Brigg solid-stick umbrella on a drizzly Saturday, I tried my luck in James Smith & Sons that same day. After a warm greeting and a comment about my terrible luck, the extremely knowledgeable staff quickly identified the problem and noted that the spring was a different size to those used by Smith. The umbrella was taken downstairs to their on-site workshop where a bespoke top spring was fashioned and fitted. Astonishingly, this took no more than 15 minutes. After paying a very small amount for such a high standard of work I left with my beloved umbrella repaired and ready to keep me dry for the rest of the day. An amazing experience from an authentic London institution.

We happened upon the shop near the end of our visit to London in July 2018. Regretted not buying an umbrella then, so when we returned in October 2019, we made it a priority to stop in and pick one up. As getting it home (Colorado) would have been a challenge, we asked them to ship it, but hold off for a few days so that it would arrive after we were home. It was delivered the day we arrived at home. Marvelous place, excellent service! My wife is already looking forward to our next visit in a couple years to look for a stick.

I loved it. The best umbrella (plus a whole lot more) store I have ever been in. They carry high quality stock umbrellas, canes, walking sticks, folding chairs, and other unusual items as well as offering a silver and gold mounting service for object of this type as well as any type of bespoke thing you can dream up in their product line meaning it is a store for all budgets. The prices are also exceptionally reasonable for what you get as well. And the service - it's exceptional in all respects. People forget what shopping at stores used to be like - lots of store personnel to assist you and answer any questions you may have. Nowadays it's all self service, so a store like this really stands out when you can find one. And it's just exceptionally notable that they have been in business since the 18th century and mostly at the current location. They are doing something right to still be in business with such a broad spectrum of customers. Highly recommended, even if it's just to stop by to see a Victorian style store that is 100% customer oriented selling high quality and bespoke merchandise. You won't regret it.

An absolutely fascinating shop. They sell mainly walking sticks and umbrellas They have been on the same site for something like 180 years. The shop has a great atmosphere and a staff who deliver real traditional, British customer service. Discreet and knowledgeable.

That is, they asked questions to determine my needs and desires, presented several options, and then cut my selection to fit. They were all friendly and even showed interest in the custom cane I came in with. If only all shops could have a staff this good, business would be improved in many ways. And by this, I mean that, as an American, more of our shops should train their staffs to be more like the wonderful folks at James Smith & Sons. This experience was one of the highlights of our trip to London.

I've walked past this shop many times but it's always looked quite imposing so I have never made it inside until now. The shop is actually really lovely and welcoming once you step inside. The staff are friendly but also happy to let you browse and there were a few obvious tourists whilst I was there too. Their range of umbrellas and walking sticks is just fantastic - I think one of the classic umbrellas would make a really nice men's birthday present. The brollies are pricey, but you can tell they will last a long time. James Smith & Sons also do less-elegant foldable umbrellas in case you get caught in the rain and need to pick something up urgently!

I'm really pleased to see a traditional and highly specialised shop like this flourishing and having such broad appeal in the modern age. When I went in on a Saturday afternoon (admittedly a rainy one) it was buzzing with people enthusiastically looking at umbrellas, and they seemed to be doing a roaring trade. There's a good range of products and prices available, from cheap and cheerful up to expensive but lovingly handmade umbrellas.

First things first. The store is lovely and tidy and worth a visit just to look around (there was actually a group doing just that when I arrived and instead of urging the group to leave or to buy something, the staff was instead kindly solicitous and encouraging of their questions and appreciation of the many umbrellas and walking sticks to be found). Do pop in if you're in the area. To further speak about the staff, they were polite, and friendly but always professional. They were also knowledgeable about their wares and seemed to take actual pride in what they were selling which made me itch for an umbrella made by their hands even more. I chose for myself (despite being male) a ladies walking length umbrella in black with a malaccan cane handle. It had a charming tassle attached that asked to be removed (it didn't affect the function at all). If you're curious why I chose the ladies model over the more substantial men's, it's simply because I prefer the size, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let convention tell me what to do. Now, you're wondering, is the expense worth it? Yes. Yes it is. Not only do you have the privilege of owning what is essentially a piece of functional couture, but it's made of the very best materials meant to stand against the elements without collapsing on you. Shortly after buying my Malaccan beauty I found myself in Paris during the oddest May weather I've experience. Saying it was cold and blustery is putting it too lightly as the winds and rain were such that all around me I watched as tourists in the champs de Mars were struggling with suddenly collapsed and broken umbrellas that simply weren't up to muster. As for me and my JS&S umbrella, we were fine. The spines barely quivered in the rain and I didn't even notice the hail striking the top until I saw it on the ground. TL;DR excellent store, staff, and product. And for those curious, yes they do sell other less expensive umbrellas and they are not afraid to help you select something in your price range. I am happy to say that this will not be the last umbrella I purchase from them.

Im sure they get a lot of browsers but this was going to be our splurge. Very happy with the build of the umbrella.
