Reviews of Chief Trading Post

Absolutely love this place. Highly recommended it if you like bits and pieces for your garden.
It's sadly fallen into pretty bad disarray as I think they're turning the whole site into a middle-class gated community with a drs surgery. But they still serve hot food. You can easily spend an hour walking around looking at all the pretty trinkets and hand carved ornaments.
Really lovely staff. Great atmosphere
S. C.
Amazing Ploughman’s at this quirky cafe within the Garden centre. At £6.50 (July 2022) it was amazing value! Lovely little farm shop and such friendly and welcoming staff. Will definitely be back x
C. M.
Quirky and fabulous. Love this place, the cafe is fantastic and very generous portions. Farm shop is well stocked, very fortunate to have this locally.
R. S.
A bit of a strange place but the food was good.
Really good espresso too.
G.
Indescribable.
Hilarious.
Definitely worth a visit.
S. S.
Less of a garden centre, more a farm shop now. Good selection of cakes available in the cafe at lunchtime but, after that, it's the leftovers which are generally stale.
t. h.
It's very disappointing 2 c it quite run down and the rotten wooden carts and unused greenhouses by the entrance and there's not much of a garden centre. But the tearoom is lovely and very nice food.
R. M.
Good range of food, very healthy portions and good value for money.
Staff were helpful and friendly.
We did have to queue for a while though, so a super place for a relaxed lunch, coffee with friends or family, but give yourself time to enjoy it.
L. A.
Great place to go for coffee/tea and cake. Good selection.Nice garden to sit out in on warmer days. Interesting inside area to sit whichbis heated ! Or you can sit inside cafe. Very clean toilet facilities. Dog friendly 🙂10/10 from me
A. G.
Very relaxing and a wide range of garden ornaments
R. S.
Only discovered this unlikely looking place a couple of weeks ago. Basically a food shop but also plants and garden stuff. Give it a look!
R. J. M.
Not bad ...preferred the old serving and cafe layout to this weird maze of windows and partitions ..
Ordering outside to eat indoors is a pane( window pun).
Jacket potatoes are good ..the menu is ok ..good for a browse around after or before eating in the shops and curio's
H. G. (. m.
Love this place such a shame its being flattend great staff and lovely ahoos
A. H.
A lovely quirky cafe with friendly staff and good food. Large seating areas both inside and out, very spacious. There is also an independent farm shop and green grocer to stock up on local produce.
You can even have your dog pampered while looking around the garden centre or having lunch.
A good place to relax
L. M.
Lovely farm food store . Great coffee and Chelsea bun. Plenty of space . Friendly staff.
M. A.
Very quirky garden centre does nice meals and has a good selection of plants.
Has a cute little robin that visits you.
B. C.
Good food, friendly service and it won't break the bank. Regular Saturday lunchtime family meet up. Been going there for years
C. W.
Good food but sadly garden centre gone to seed. I believe it is going to close down. Such a.shame used to be a very interesting unusual garden centre.
S. V.
We had such a lovely time, had amazing food, and enjoyed incredible scenery.
J. B.
The cafe does the best lunches and at a very reasonable price, all home made and very tasty. Very good value for money. There's also a shop that sells quirky goods, an area selling plants and lots of out houses with weird and wonderful artefacts. We visit regularly and always stay for lunch, but it is always busy so you may have to wait for a seat especially if you want to sit inside in the warm
J. A.
Great farm shop and lots of interesting articles
P. A.
Food was v good and coffee too.
T. M.
Amazing place. Cafe has good varied menu, good helpings, & freshly produced. Friendly service too. Indoor tables in 2 rooms & outside are canopied tables in cubical setting, some with heaters! Great place for families & dogs permitted to outside cubical. There's florist, amazing nick-knack shop & a small farmers stall. Interesting place for all!
R. P.
Not a garden centre. Great little cafe and farm shop, with a few plants outside but don't go there expecting to buy compost and a watering can!
H. J.
Great place. Great staff.
Visit various times a year with kids - Sandpit is a favourite.
Great food (smells divine) lots of unusual ornaments.
A fresh fruit and Veg store too with various dairy products on sale.
The best thing about the place is it's covered by roof everywhere you go. So, its a good place to visit in rain or shine.
C. S.
Came for food. Lovely place with lots to see.
Had quite a long wait in the cold to be served, noone in front of us, the lady serving was moaning it was cold..... She should have been outside waiting to be served, that was cold! She was moaning about her day and it was only 9.30am. Not a good start. We almost turned and left. Ordered panini, it came with salad and beef flavoured ridged crisps that just tasted too strong. The panini ingredients were nice but the panini itself wasn't, it tasted as though it was a tad stale.
Overall we were disappointed on this occasion. It will take a while before we return 😞
A. F.
This is a great place to visit there is so much too look at and not your everyday garden furniture! Well worth a visit lots of plants and flowers. The jacket potatoes serving were huge but the homemade cakes minute portions. Staff lovely 😀😀😀
M.
I always drive past this on my way to work...well when I was attending the office. Wifey and I saw that they were doing Xmas wreaths and Xmas trees so thought we'd stop by.
Lovely, little place with farm shop, fruit stand and other weird and wonderful things. The farm shop was serving local things like chutneys and jams. Couldn't resist but get some.
We purchased a wreath from the fruit stand (weird as that may sound). Everyone really helpful.
Looking forward to coming here when the café reopens and when we have a our new little one running around!
H. C.
To me, this is the best place since "People and Planet" used to be in Swineford. The only thing it's missing is a view of the river. I love it - it has a unique ambience. I always head there when stressed as I find it really calming. The tea room, garden and pod are lovely. The staff are friendly. I definitely recommend it.
A. P.
Love this place, bought couple of plants, ceramic pots and lovely antique looking watering can.
A. S.
This place is a jewel. When other garden centres dying in droves, I hope this one stays, as it is more of a sanctuary and there is rarely anything else like it. Even an old and grumpy man like me likes it. You would be a fool not to visit at least once. Food is good too.
J. S.
To say this place is a hidden gem would be an understatement. If you like great food, amazing coffee, relaxing strolls through a wonderland filled with one of a kind antiques and flowers then honestly - LOOK NO FURTHER! This is a little piece of heaven on earth. A must see for everyone!
S. H.
Great cafe. But prices in the farm shop are very expensive for example x2 scotch eggs was £5.50
D. M.
Very good went for lunch with my daughter and grandson he had jacket potatoe and we had a ploughman's we sat in a pod it had a heater so was very cosy highly recommend this place .😄
J. B.
Really cute quirky place. Great social distancing in place too. Gets busier around 10/10.30 but they have plenty of seating for everyone. They have lovely cakes and pastries too!
T. “. M.
This place is rather strange as in not quite sure what to make if it?! Most of the furniture in the greenhouses is water damaged and weirdly expensive. I can't imagine they sell any of it. There are much better garden centers in the area. The cafe, however, is very nice and does lovely cakes. It's worth going just to have a look around. Bizarre
T. l.
Brilliant place, food was really nice, staff very pleasant, well worth a visit.
S. G.
Great place, worth a visit, not least for the weird and wonderful things they have.
It's been made a lot better recently, we were pleasantly surprised to see a lovely farm shop and improved outdoor area
C. R.
Bought lovely fruit and veg from Tutti Frutti and some great plants from the Garden Centre side. Looks like they are getting the outside seating areas ready for opening the cafe next week. The deli sells produce from Anstey's Bakery and Marshfield icecream as well as meat from Buxtons. The pork we had was amazing but unfortunately all sold today.
L. N.
Love this place, it's Unique. Garden centre with a difference. Take a walk round the large greenhouses, no not for plants, but many wondrous things. Then stroll through the plant and orniments section and end up in the cafe, I rate this 5 stars, get there early as its very popular.
N. C.
Always a pleasure to browse this place. The more you look the more you see. An interesting collection of items are artifacts and al for sale.
Stop by the cafe while there or only visit for the cafe, but either way, you'll enjoy an excellent coffee and find it hard to choose from the selection of tasty cakes and nibbles while there.
N. N.
Have loved this place since before it got popular. It was a perfect little hideaway. Not so much now as it does get busy, but its still a great place to visit. Very quirky! Always something to look at and the food is consistently good. The cakes are amazing!
T. M.
This garden center must never shut it. If you are in the area you MUST visit. They havd the best collection of garden statues and bits in the South of England. The food is also very good. Staff are great. Don't miss this one.
K. A.
Very abstract. Great cafe with lovely food, very cosy.
*.
Charming place. great cafe with quirky seating areas, wonderful and enjoyable. there is lots of interesting things for sale in the gift shop, garden centre, fruit and veg to wonderful old things and giant horses and tigers.
D. s.
Always really busy in the cafe and always fast friendly service. I come here alot from the other side of bristol as the food here is so lovely. It's worth travelling across town as the food is all homemade, fresh and good portions. The prices are reasonable also. The cakes are so scrummy I can never decide which one to have so normally have to order two. Would definitely recommend. Lots of quirky decor and furniture set within the lovely garden centre
T. H.
Lovely popular little cafe. Great place to meet up for a bit of lunch or choose from good selection of homemade cakes. Would recommend a visit. The vintage posters displayed will also give a few giggles.
E. R.
I am struggling to come to terms with this place. In essence, it's a farm shop, cafe and a plant shop.... But... A little exploration takes you into the depths of some labyrinthine hell peppered with faux native American carvings, presumably for sale although I'm unsure who's buying. Then there's the huge animal carvings. And the giant barn full of wagon wheels (and not the jammy sort). I felt like I was always one wrong corner away from stumbling across a sacrificial altar littered with the scattered remains of other browsers who'd lost their way.
Bought some lovely fish cakes from the shop though, so all's well.
H. S.
I call this garden centre "Quirky" as thats what it is, full of gifts as you walk in and then on to undercover plants with some mediteranian music playing in the background and many statues e.g Elvis full size, variety of pots and anything and everything really.. Has a nice cafe quiche salad is lovely and thick doorstop sandwiches, not too thick. Theres also a lovely fresh Fruit and Veg shop outside by the entrance, one negatove experience is when i took my elderly mother there a few minutes to 3pm they wouldnt serve us so we didnt go there again, i felt it was rather mean considering we were regular shoppers there. Never mind, probably just a bad day.🙂
S. B.
Cafe is excellent. Lovely food and very generous portions. Cakes are especially good. The gift shop has some unusual gifts but the garden centre offering is sparce and underloved. Feels like the cafe and shop kerp the garden centre element going.
G. D.
Looking very run down these days. Cafe still selling from a takeaway window and you have to hang around waiting for your order. Ours took about 20mins today. Food OK, came in takeaway box with plastic cutlery - knife broke eating jacket potato with chilli topping - who puts mushrooms in a chilli? Tuna sandwich came with no spread on the bread and a layer of sweetcorn on top of the tuna, not mixed in, like I thought it would be.
m. h. (.
One of the best tea rooms around friendly helpful staff. Food is fresh and great value for money. Set in a very unique garden center which is one off a kind with plenty of odd items for sale..
S. C.
Love this place. Quirky with a hint of madness. Cafe is fab, kids love the sand pit and spotting the incredible statues.
V. K.
I like all of it! A local farm shop is just what anyone needs. Ground beef is out of this world! I always recommend this place for fresh products.
R. K.
It's impossible to really explain what this place is. It's certainly a must visit if you're in the area, it'll blow your mind. There's literally something weird and wonderful round every corner that'll cause you to question if you're actually in reality. There's an entire garage dedicated to candlesticks and wood carvings. There's an entire greenhouse dedicated to wagon wheels at varying degrees of decay. I think my assessment would be: It's a bit like what a garden centre might feel like after an apocalypse....
It's evident the florist, cafe and greengrocer were keeping the place going as they were good. The random assortments of curiosities are worth a look, but you may need to negotiate the price!
S. B.
This place is lovely for tea and cake, lunch etc, it's a great place for children. They have an indoor sand pit which they can play in. You will find really unusual things you never thought you needed, last time I went there I bought a cockatoo.
S. H.
I have been going here for years and love it. I've signposted people there and everyone loves it. The plans there are unusual everyday plants quite often there's a twist ..it's a great place for food, gifts and plants
H. H.
Great place to go around, cafe place still has loads of variety and hoping they keep the field/seating area open in future.
S. B.
Great food really tasty, love going to this place.
c. d.
Food really good, gets very busy so reserve or go early. Lovely assortment of miscellaneous goods like statutes, vases, furniture etc. Reasonable selection of plants. well worth a visit.
N. S.
What a lovely quirky cafe with plenty to look at.
We enjoyed coffees, cake and hot food and all was enjoyable. (Caters for allergies too)
C. P.
Moved closer to here so decided to visit as we pass every day on way to work. Bit of a run down garden centre and would be amazing if done up. Loads of little quirky things, didn't have any food but have been told it is good
-.
What a crazy place! A local community hub with a lovely cafe and farm shop - alongside gigantic bronze animal statues, a greenhouse with a woodland growing inside, and a giant aloe vera!
J. C.
Lovely place to sit for a cuppa and meet friends.
Lots of outside seating.
L. R. (.
Ideal for finding a bargain and rescue a plant. It’s kitch because of the theme. I have found a door peg to place under my door and I am still using it, so it’s a 4!
J. H.
Great food, huge portions. It was heaving with customers but, service was really quick considering. Tables were also cleared quickly. Definitely recommend
A. J.
the Garden centre is good fun and the cafe serves good food. Unfortunately they don't make it obvious what time the serve God until so often people end up disappointed that they can't have hot food even though the cafe is open for another hour.
L. D.
Their food is usually plain and simple but good. I'm glad to see they are progressing with the clear up of the old greenhouses and expanded their dining area.
K. S.
Great quirky place for a coffee and a slice of cake
P. M.
Staff friendly boxed sandwiches fine with crisps & salad. Longish wait due to popularity as fair amount of people queuing.
C. D.
I always find this place beautifully quirky. I love that dogs are allowed in the garden centre and we can sit and have coffee and cake in the cafes seating area in the warm.
H. G.
This is one of our favourite Cafe's / Garden Centre . Lovely food ,lovely Staff. Great for chilling & looking around you never know what you'll find here.
J. S.
Great place for plants and unusual unique items. Wonderful place for coffee and cake, great food.
j. w.
Lovely place to visit even just for lunch or a snack and the fact they have opened up extra spaces and areas for eating means that there is a lot more opportunity and less queuing required.
The food is always of generous proportions and a huge amount of variety and clearly popular as their deli options run out before 2p.m..
The reason for the lower score is that when I went to pay on my debit card they put their hand out to take my card and I thought they were going to put it in the machine for me to tap in my PIN but actually they presented it to the unit and processed my payment contactless. I didn't ask for it, they didn't ask me if I wanted it and I believe it's illegal for anyone other than the card owner to actually do the contactless. This is something that I believe needs to be addressed, as when I asked for them to cancel it I was told it had already been authorised and despite saying I never do contactless on my card they went into great detail telling me that I should speak to my bank and get my bank to stop contactless or send me a specific card without the contactless on it but that was not the point. The reason I have my card with the contactless on but never using it, is that should my card ever be cloned and used, I know that it was never me because I've never used the contactless.
H. A. P.
Their tea room is just AMAZING! Such a weird and wonderful place. The staff are always friendly and chatty. We love coming here!! Massive bonus they let dogs in!!
L. L.

T. W.
Its a strange kinda place..sells all sorts of things ..food in cafe abit pricey..but on the whole a nice place to spent some time.
A. C.
Bizarre - love it/hate it, really not sure. Feels like a great concept, very quirky, but sadly allowed to decay. Needs some upkeep and tlc to bring it back to life. Oh yes, there are some plants, but don't get your hopes up, they too need some tlc.
S. C.
Really enjoyed a quiet coffee, cake and read of the newspaper
in the pod this morning. And an extra thank you for the gluten free cake!
P. W.
