Reviews of Panacea Museum
J. P.
A fascinating museum, charting the life and times of a highly eccentric religious society. Set in the Panacea Society's former residencies, it contains many information packed rooms, pictorial displays, a beautifully kept garden and the society's chapel. Many of the rooms have been restored to look as they had in the society's heyday. The Founder"s House, home of the 'prophet' Octavia, almost feels as though it could still be inhabited. There's a charming tea room too. And it's free. What's not to like?!

This site was a very good visit, different and interesting.
It’s free entry, no tickets needed.
In summary, it’s the HQ of a “end of the world” religious group, from earlier times.
Beautifully maintained Victorian house, garden, and chapel.
Recommended.

Oh my goodness. After a lifetime of knowing this place was here, it's great to be able to visit, see how the community lived and try to understand some of their beliefs and customs. Amazing time capsule of a victorian home as well.

Really enjoyed my visit to the Panacea Museum. I have since been back at least 3 times. Its Bedford's hidden gem. Wonderful little tea room.

Fascinating , quite unique , peaceful place. I walked around with a smile.
Took the brain in unusual directions. Funny old world.
Couldn't help but wonder if Spike Milligan had ever visited.........
M. D.
Quirky and fascinating museum, read the story on their website and be prepared to be intrigued and surprised! But what's in the box??
E. D.
Free entry, nice and helpful staff and a lovely little tea shop to top it all off!
M. T.
Unpublicised until recently (unless you count Monty Python) museum of this millennial religious order and its role including the Garden of Eden. Free to visit which is good because you'll probably need a few trips here to take in the contents.

Lovely museum nice small cafe near the garden so you can have cup of tea and or cake
R. K.
Amazing, so interesting. The staff are lovely and the cafe was also nice, will go again.

100% worth the visit. One of Bedford aspects I've had no idea about. Also little tea room in the garden is a lovely bonus
G. C.
Fascinating and friendly, plus they don't mind if you pick the fallen fruit
M. R.
This museum contains items from an interesting modern religious sect. The sect is now defunct, but left a large endowment that now funds the museum and a charitable trust. It’s definitely worth seeing if you’re in Bedford.

amazing place with amazing history. in the garden you can drink delicious coffee and eat a good cake.
T. D.
Excellent customer service and great crafting. Exhibits well laid out and give a fascinating insight into a fairly obscure historic community.

Have lived in Bedford all my life and finally paid a visit today - it was definitely worth it. Fascinating exhibits about the society, it's founders and other prophets around the world. The buildings and gardens are maintained in excellent condition. Will be back!

I was surprised how interesting I found this museum. On the surface it's about a religious group with seemingly crazy ideas. In fact they were harmless but had faith in their beliefs, and have left a legacy of good work no matter what you think of their beliefs.
R. F.
Really interesting and a bit weird, however it's fascinating and worth a visit
L. B.
An amazing place to visit. Such beautiful houses and grounds with a rich history.
M. G.
The buildings and the furnishings were beautifully kept. As you walk through the buildings you learn the story of the Panacea society and Octavia. There were no other visitors when we were there on a busy Saturday in Bedford and the bathroom facilities were sparkling clean. My 9 and 11 year old really enjoyed it as well.

Little treasure of hidden history in a corner of Bedford town centre. Lots to see & learn
M. W.
A fascinating curiosity in the center of Bedford, the Panacea museum gives visitors an insight into a religious movement that, if not for this museum, would likely be forgotten. Though worth remembering the museum largely presents just one side of the story, there remains a lot to learn from its well-crafted exhibits. Plus, entry is free, making the Panacea Museum an easy recommendation to visitors of Bedford.

I found this museum fascinating. When we first arrived we watched a very informative video about the Panacea Society before going round the houses, chapel etc. It also has a lovely garden and a little cafe. We didn't have time to get round everywhere, probably due to long stop at cafe for cup of tea and a lovely piece of cake 🙂, so we are going back tomorrow.

Weird, but charming museum about a religious cult.
Probably not worth a large detour, but if you're visit the Higgins Museum an Gallery (literally 1 mins walk away), the I'd definitely visit here too. The Panacea society were a strange religious cult who were based in this house from the Victorian period. apparently they believed things like Bedford was the original garden of Eden (it's a lovely town, but that might be a step too far!) and planned for Jesus, when he returned to earth, to come and live in Bedford. The cult were very secretive, and were active until about ten years ago. (I grew up in the area in the 80s and had no idea they existed). The museum has basically frozen the house in time from the early 20th century, so is worth a visit if
a) You are interested in weird, religious cults hidden in suburban England
b) Interior design in the Victorian/early 20th century
c) Just want to visit somewhere a bit unusual.
I loved it, my kids loved it, you probably don't need to spend more than an hour here to see everything. There are handy guides, maps and videos, and the volunteers were very welcoming and helpful. and no, they didn't try to recruit me - as the cult stopped operating when the last members died a few years ago.

Hidden gem! So much to see and great museum. Would have loved a coffee and cake in the garden of eden though!
C. J.
This place has a ridiculous amount of reading (in a good way). Wouldn't suggest for young children because of this.
A great blueprint for how to start a cult if you're looking for inspiration.
M. T.
Fascinating insight into a culture religion. Placed into historical context. A little of the suffragette element - I would have liked to have seen more of this.
J. M.
Interesting history and sociology of life and times in the early 20th century, from a certain religious perspective. Also the house and grounds are kept in original Victorian style, also a quiet and peaceful tea shop with garden. Entry is free, a lot to see there hence, and a young family would like it probably.
J. H.
Very friendly volunteers. The museum has a a great range of original items in its exhibits and it is well presented. As well as learning about the Panacea Society, it gives an insight into life in the early 20th century. There is too much to learn in one visit and is well worth a repeat visit.
L. J.
Really fascinating place, even the videos had me gripped and wanting to know more. So interesting learning about the former residents and their religious beliefs, would love to know what's in that box though! Would very highly recommend a visit.
A. L.

Such an interesting museum and birthplace of the Panacea Society - an apocalyptic sect. Beautiful setting, coffee shop, and the museum often hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
