Reviews of Ikon Gallery
m. m.
I had a great time at Ikon gallery.
It was my first time visiting an art studio on purpose, so I didn't know what to expect.
Overall I think the ambience of the gallery is great. The exhibition on show on the day was really nice and unique.
I particularly liked the exhibition done by the school kids. It was simple but impacting.
It is free to see the exhibition and you can donate 5 pounds if you wish or find the work being done there as good and impactful.

Quirky, interesting, and fun. A place that really shows it's charms and gives back to local communities with free entry, hosting smaller artists and putting passion into the art. It is small, and that is a drawback to many, but I think to judge a place of contemporary art by it's timing is like taking in a painting purely by it's color composition - it's not understanding the whole experience. Pleasantly surprised. Believe exhibits change all the time, so hopefully can share this one I experienced in photo format without it spoiling the attraction too much

Great exhibits, shop and cafe. The courtyard the Ikon overlooks is one of my favourite places in Birmingham too, especially worth a visit in Spring when the trees blossom.
R. L.
This is a beautiful modern art gallery in the cool Brindley Place complex. It is set over three storeys in an attractive building, and there is a laid-back café serving quality food and drinks on the ground floor with outdoor seating.
M. A.
Not been to IKON gallery for a good while, but the RBSA didn't have anything in that I was really interested in seeing and I had some spare time in Birmingham. As a gallery that tends to have more modern art rather than the boring traditional art that I prefer, it was nice to see an exhibition of icons from the 1400s on this visit. I should keep up to date with exhibitions held here and make more effort to visit.

We’ve struggled to be provided with any cultural stimulation in Birmingham so this is a good space to spend an hour or so of your time.
Pop in to browse the bookshop or for a good selection of gifts , with some independent Birmingham retailers being stocked.
ArtMap Birmingham is available here ! We recommend picking up to browse other art exhibits in the city… 🎨🖌🖼

Nice to get out for some culture again, both floors of exhibitions were V. good... Esp. Enjoyed the Britta Marakatt-Labba 'Under the Vast Sky' exhibition, really interesting pieces... Loved it... And bought the book about her work in the gift shop as a reminder of day... P. S great gift shop and cafe in building!
E. I.
Fabulous gallery. Lot of interesting, free exhibitions.
J. L.
I like it, it's small but the gallery is really nice. You don't have to book your visit.
D. H.
Amazing building and great exhibition space. Seems well equipped, right in the heart of food city, and free entry too. The exhibition I saw was total bollards, though. You'll be asking yourself "is this a joke? Is this an international artist? Really?"
They should showcase some of the local graffiti talent instead.
R. L.
there weren’t many exhibits as there’s only a few floors, but it was very interesting to look at and the gift shop had loads to offer as well! would recommend especially since it’s free and you want to kill time

Although the art on show at the time did not meet my fancy, it did provide something to talk about, have fun with and discuss. The building is lovely and beautiful, the glass elevator at the side of the staircase is brilliant - definitely travel in it at least up/down one floor and the art book shop was divine, with a great curated space of brilliant stuff.
T. S.
Loved it. The chap Joseph golds was very helpful with me and the other half. Hopefully next time we come with the grandkids we don’t get lost again.
M. M.
A great little gallery, supported by your donations. Organised and friendly don't miss this little place. I viewed the Kristof Kintera exhibition superb. Great to see the gallery supporting new and upcoming artists.
A. C.
Great place to visit and I’d really recommend coming back regularly to see what’s new each time. Great facilities and amazing art, it’s the kind of place that requires you to explore rather than holding you hand. If you’re interested in seeing some new things that might make you think, this is the place for you.
J. D.
A superb independent contemporary art gallery set in a converted Victorian building close to Brindley Place.
We saw the John Walker exhibition inspired by the coastal landscape of Maine in the United States.
There's a gift shop and a nice looking cafe too.
I always find Ikon to be a welcome and nicely unpretentious space. Exhibitions are well planned and even the kids enjoyed it.
One of the picture below is by my daughter, can you guess which one?
T. R. A.
Loved the gallery. It's a famous art gallery and almost everyday there is an exhibition or two.
There is also a store at the ground floor to buy postcards/souvenirs. The interior of this place was magnificent. Loved visiting there.
A. A.
I love this art gallery. Rather than just having a variety of different artists with one or two pieces by each, it offers a space for artists to showcase a whole portfolio of work. When I visited, the work on display was mostly by Barry Flanagan. The spacing of the pieces was good, and so was the lighting.
It was easily accessible, as there is a lift that stops at each floor (I recommend using the lift from the bottom floor to the top, even if you dont need to. You will have a fun suprise), foldable stools that you can carry round with you if you find it difficult to stand for too long, and there are large print versions of the artwork guides.
There is a gift shop between the entrance and the gallery, and there are usually books and prints from the artist on display at the time.
D. R. L.
It's well worth having a look round this small free gallery which I do believe is supported by charity. The staff were welcoming and friendly and it's always interesting to view modern art because I usually find that there is one piece which will make you very glad you came ❤️
The interior of the building is pretty cool too!
I took our son (11) and he enjoyed it.
D. O.
lovely place for a posh coffee stop
staff are friendly
Good selection on offer on the menu
Great place to coincide with a canal walk which is easily accessed nearby :-)

I really love contemporary museums and this was the only contemporary one besides the Birmingham museum which has some contemporary things but there is a lot of paintings.
Ikon reminds me a lot like Tate modern (if anyone hasn’t been there it’s a must, it’s massive) with the contemporary art pieces. If anyone is studying fashion design like I am, and on a budget definitely go to ikon, it’s much smaller but you can focus on each of the pieces and definitely will be able to study all the pieces around 1-2 hours depending how in-depth you want to see all the details of the pieces, etc but if you’re not someone who looks into it as detailed you’ll probably take under an hour for sure.
The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars is because they don’t have enough floors and more pieces to see, if wish to see more and a plus from the museum is it’s free to see.
The elevator is really funny so much try it out, it has a funny tension effect when going up or down, even though if you aren’t disable must try it out, only if there isn’t any disabled person waiting.
The walk area is slightly narrow when travelling around the stairs that pathway before you enter in to see the pieces just a heads up in case anyone who is disabled and wanted to see it.
There a few piece which you have to go stairs so it’s incongruent for disabled people who really would want to see it.
The ikon entrance sign is a Instagram worthy picture with the ikon lit up with each bulbs.
TRAVELLING TO THERE AND BACK -
I went straight from the new street train station and caught a taxi it took around 10 minutes it costed £5 or under but I used an Uber. Since it was around 20-30 minute walk and it’s very steep, wouldn’t recommend if you’re walking in platforms or heels which I did on the day.
Travelling back from the museum to the train station/ city centre, you’ll need to call for a taxi. There isn’t an taxi nearby. There are small cafes around though.
Also I don’t think there is a car park where I was dropped off since there was a barrier and a cross section for walking paths only. But you can probably park on other streets and walk to it.
L. H. K.
A nice art gallery with great atmosphere and friendly staff. They don't charge entrance, but suggests a £3 donation. Has a nice cafe and public toilets on the ground floor.
K. H.
Excellent gallery with great exhibition programme. Beautiful installation of Mit Jai Inn's work from Thailand. A really special place to visit if you're into contemporary art. Well worth it.
V. B.
Ground floor it's a nono for me, first floor is great!!
D. P.
Small but beautifully designed and not to be missed. The elevator ride alone will keep everyone in the family happy!! Stunning! Also lovely restaurant for before or after!
P. S.
Awesome and unique. Workers lovely and professional. very good day out for the more experimental gallery enjoyers.
A. L.
Really great afternoon spent at the gallery. Fully recommend visiting all the exhibitions if you can :)
L. P.
I saw/experienced the exhibition of Mit Jai Inn, Dreamworld which was utterly beautiful. The people who work at the Ikon Gallery are passionate about the work and communicative. It's a very conducive space, well cared for and the café serves the best cappuccino I've had in a while. Thank you!
A. H.
Interesting place. They have different themed art work on display throughout the year. This month's display was not for me I'm afraid.
I like fine art so if the museum and art gallery were open I would have gone there.
But each to their own.
To be fair I did enjoy trying to interpret what I think the art work ment to the artist and what it means to me.
So Thumbs-up from me.
T. O.
Perhaps modern art isnt for us. It was a strange experience. Best part was the lift...going up has a ascending singing voice and going down has a descending singing voice.. was in the lift more than seeing the art
S. J.
A great compact gallery, a short stroll away from the International Convention Centre and canal. The exhibition I saw was of works inspired by sailing and colonialism with a room devoted to black necklaces forming designs on the wall, being one stand-out exhibit. The exhibits took over three floors of an old Victorian building that has been converted in a minimalist sympathetic style. The gallery is unpretentious, free of charge to visit and I suggest takes at least an hour to appreciate all the galleries contents.
S. M.
Simply the best Modern Art gallery in Birmingham within a unique setting of an old school house designed by Martin and Chamberlain.
Great exhibitions which genuinely inspire and showcase super talent. Everything from the lift to the loo's have been thought about.
Don't forget to check out the uber cool cafe to get a caffeine fix.
S. D.
I visited this place this weekend. It was an interesting and beautiful place.
My fiancée is an art appreciator and was interested in visiting this place. I'm not really into art but found this gallery to be an interesting place. They don't charge an entry fee but has a donation box. There are 2 floors where you can see galleries. Building also has a lift if you want to use it. You have cafe and toilets at the ground floor.
There are guides available at each room if you have any questions.
D. W.
The iKON lives up to its name as an ultramodern conversion to an historical building. Even if you are the ultimate fitness fanatic - ride up and down in the glass lift. Great exhibition and gallery spaces and friendly helpful and informative staff are available throughout. The small shop has some lovely items and is also worth a visit.
F. S.
Nothing much to see in here except for a few paintings.
a. l.
One of my favorite places in town. Always exciting exhibitions on and a cafeteria with delicious brunch and breakfast, perfect plan for a weekend morning
T. Z.
Best modern art gallery in Birmingham. If you are interested in modern arts and exhibitions you must visit. Wonderful lovely cafe for lunch, breakfast and tea.
T. L.
Such a lovely contemporary art gallery. Had a great time there and looking forward to see another exhibition xx
B. M.
Beautiful building. not as big or as many arts exhibited when I was in - late September, however worth a visit
J. H.
The gallery is quite nice though not very big, there's a lift that sings and also handy in case you're not very mobile. The cafe was.. disappointing. The antipasto platter is good value for money (£12) and the teas are nice, but the service is very unprofessional. Tables weren't cleared properly and we specifically had to ask for the table itself to get cleaned. We had to ask for a menu several times and ended up grabbing one ourselves. Nobody came to take our order, it took ages to get someone to come who was all surprised we wanted to order. Then getting the bill was very confusing. All in all it took so long it messed up our schedule for the day. I would be pretty annoyed if I was the cafe manager, because there seemed to be plenty of staff so you'd expect it all to run smoothly, but maybe they're all people who've not been working in a cafe for very long. :/ It's a shame because the cafe looks nice and the food is good.
T. W.
Hidden treasure of Birmingham. Exhibits are given their own space. Staff are extra friendly.
L. I. M.
Lovely little museum of contemporary exibitions. There is an unusual lift, if you visit the museum do use it. The little shop is full of interesting books and more. The cafè is nice but a bit expensive.
L. S. B.
Small but perfectly formed. Interesting and well curated exhibitions, nice gift shop and good cafe on site - I recommend the Arabian eggs! Lovely way to spend a few hours
K. M.
Less here than I expected but still worth a look around. Nice coffee shop attached also.
K. N.
The exhibition is interesting. A bit hard to understand for me but I found a few very beautiful pieces.
R. S.
Just going there for the lift is good enough! I won’t spoil it, just go and see for yourself. (oh yeh, the art was good too)
I.
Probably pretty exhibition dependant, decent enough space for some small stuff
A. B.
Cool gallery enjoyed going there. The architecture outside and in is Well suited. The experience was good and the art work at the time of my visit was visually impacting. Two hours Max's and there is also a gift shop and restaurant.
J. P.
Beautiful building. Sadly the exhibitions weren't great. But, it's free entry...
S. D.
Enjoyable, interesting and a beautiful space.
I'm really not an art appreciator, but was brought here by my partner and loved the exhibition and thought the building itself was really interesting and beautiful.
Additionally, they had a really good info pack for people like me who like looking at art just a bit more if I know the story behind it.
Some images from the exhibition, but just to showcase the interior of the building. Also you should certainly check out the café (Yorks) on the ground floor!
R. H.
We came across this gallery while wandering around Birmingham city centre. It was a lovely find. The staff were very friendly and I loved the exhibition by Meryl McMaster. There were plenty of interesting looking places to eat nearby. We will have to go back when we have more time...
A. M.
Interesting and challenging gallery, run on a shoestring. Always worth a visit. Makes you think.
H. M.
Really love this gallery
They regularly have a new exhibition and I've enjoyed looking though all of them.
It's a smaller gallery but worth a look and free entry with optional donation
D. T.
Open and accessable, strange kind of art instillation in the 'ikonic' glass lift 😊 friendly staff, varied exhibitions and always another event around the corner. A developing children's / schools offer and an interesting little book shop attached to the gallery as well as an elegant café / restuarant. Certainly worth a visit when considering a day out around the city. Like most of Birmingham's galleries, free entry and a commitment to the arts that appeals to people and provokes thought and feeling set in an historic building in the heart of the city.
D.
I always come away inspired by the curation in this gallery. On the day I last visited there was a performance of traditional West African music in one gallery space, which lifted the spirits on an otherwise gloomy, wet and grey day.
A. R.
Best gallery space birmingham has to offer. Always something fesh and different avaliable to view. Great staff and a great vibe. I always reccomend going. ALSO USE THE LIFT IT SINGS!!!!!!
L. N.
Good range of art displays, unusual but very cool
G. A.
Nice cafe, god food at reasonable prices. Worth a drop in anytime.
D. S.
A great way to spend an hour or so, with some interesting modern art exhibitions, a well stocked bookstore to browse through and an attached cafe that serves good food and coffee.
L. N.
Good range of art displays, unusual but very cool
B. B.
Very cool little gallery very cool exhibitions, very nice and warm staff 👍
S. R.
IKON is synonymous with an intellectual sortie in the city centre. Greatly enjoyed the visit. The newest exhibition is nice, although I must admit a bit hard for me to understand. An interesting way to spend two hours in the city centre.
H. M.
Really love this gallery
They regularly have a new exhibition and I've enjoyed looking though all of them. …
N. H.
Great space, good light and exciting exhibitions.
M. S.
Great gallery. Always something new every month. Friendly staff and useful covid safe guides. Definitely recommend for family days out, artists or students.
L. I. M.
Lovely little museum of contemporary exibitions. There is an unusual lift, if you visit the museum do use it. The little shop is full of interesting books and more. The cafè is nice but a bit expensive.
J. G.
Small and perfectly formed gallery in a beautiful building. Try to go in April to appreciate the blossom against the red brick. Great shop, great café and some off-the-beaten-path art exhibits.
P. T.
Very interesting place and great café.
P. H. H.
Great art gallery Café. Nice food and attentive service in splendid building.

Beautiful place 😍
A. R.
A beautiful, quirky gallery to perfectly set off the art displayed
J. D.
Spacious two level art gallery with a great selection of contemporary artist and a nice shop.
A. H.
Small art gallery than most, but really nice. New exhibitions every few weeks.
D. B.
Great building and a wonderful exhibit showcasing local artists. Can't wait to go back and see what's there next.
L. H.
Lovely artistic space... make sure you use the lift!!
M. E.
Great place to visit if you are in Birmingham and have an interest in art and emerging artists. They have some very interesting exhibitions and a very good shop on the ground floor that not only has items connected to their exhibitions but also a very interesting selection of art history books. They also have a very nice cafe which is especially nice in Spring and Summer as you can sit out with a lovely view of the square it's positioned in
A. N. H.
Quite a small gallery, nothing too impressive. The space is nice, but not amazing, but the staff is nice.
M. C.
A small, unique museum with modern art. I wasn't a huge fan of the current exhibit, but I appreciated its uniqueness. There were a lot of flashing lights. I'd check what exhibit is on before heading over. It's free so if you don't like it, you don't have to spend much time there. There's a shop by the entrance.
G. H.
Ikon shows a diverse programme of changing exhibitions of contemporary art together with educational workshops for children.
The exhibition are always interesting but you have to keep your mind open to new ideas.
It offers a rare opportunity for adventure into an unfamiliar world and always worth a visit.
Has a great cafe with the best coffee and great food.
l. k.
Great café, beautiful building but pretty terrible waste of space as an art gallery. The contemporary art in there was rubbish when I was there. A few sacks on the floor and some mangled metal.
There are loads of talented young artists out there. Give them a chance to showcase their paintings rather than showcasing trash. Let’s be honest here. Throwing stuff on the floor isn’t art. It’s emperors new clothes stuff.
P. H. H.
Great art gallery Café. Nice food and attentive service in splendid building.
J. D.
Spacious two level art gallery with a great selection of contemporary artist and a nice shop.
A. R.
The Ikon gallery is a very tiny gallery but with very good art on it. The surroundings are incredible, very lovely, specially during the spring. I encourage anyone in the area to check the gallery out or plan an afternoon trip to see the gallery, because it is worth a visit. Also, it's free!
A. C.
Fantastic venue that supports a range of artists across many forms. They have good facilities and accessibility. The bar/cafe attached to the gallery make great coffee during the day and have a great range of cocktails and drinks in the evenings too.
C. P.
Always interesting sometimes even challenging but excellent galleries with well selected exhibitions. Great cafe and bookshop. Impressively housed in an imaginative conversion. A great asset to the Midlands.
N. P.
The installations were absolutely amazing and thought provoking. The staff were all wonderful and loved to talk about the artworks, whilst maintaining respect for other interpretations. The atmosphere is calm and the lack of barriers (at least for the Roger Hiorns installation) allows one to feel a part of the artwork. The small shop has fairly priced products that can also be seen on their website. The architecture is simply stunning, allowing the building to simultaneously fade away yet enhance the works. Overall, a great place to visit.
L. H.
Lovely artistic space... make sure you use the lift!!
J. W.
Love the Ikon Gallery. It is a really nice exhibition space in a historic building in the middle of Brindley place which is a nice part of Birmingham. The gallery is spread over two floors and there is a nice little restaurant/ cafe downstaitrs. The exhibitions are really varied and I have seen some really great stuff here in the past. As there is no entrance fee it is definitely worth a visit and they often have some food names exhibiting here.
U. A.
Lovely small gallery! The exhibits change frequently so if you've been once, you can always go back as there's always something new to see! The staff that work there are brilliant. A wonderful visit which I'd definitely recommend!
K. D.
The gallery should support, sponsor and exhibit more local artists. I find most of the exhibitions are pretentious and not visually interesting. I do not understand people who go there to stare at a manhole cover and appreciate that it’s an art. For me a good art should be extremely meaningful (logical/conceptual/make you think) and extremely aesthetically engaging (emotional/make you feel).
However, the staffs are very nice. The space itself is good. The bookstore is fantastic.
D. B.
Great building and a wonderful exhibit showcasing local artists. Can't wait to go back and see what's there next.
M. R. R.
I really nice place to spend with your kids after a good walk. The staff were very friendly and polite. The food was very good with this beautiful chips! For a cafe shop much better than some of the restaurants. Thank you for your attention. Well done
J. W.
They had a vocal choir record them changing tones from low to high, as you go up levels in the elevator so does the vocal choir, giving you a sort of royal welcome as you reach your destination on the elevator. Its honestly great!Something I can honestly say I would not have sought out had it not been a yelp event and I am so pleased I went. We were taken on a guided tour
J. G.
Fantastic modern art gallery - housed in a lovely building and a great time of year to visit (a certain virus notwithstanding) to catch the blossom in the zen garden at the square in front. Inspiring
M. L.
A lot of modern art is in my opinion basically rubbish but occasionally I come across something (again in my opinion) that I think is brilliant. I like to do a bit myself and find inspiration from some of the work. The fact that it's free makes it a must to visit when I'm in Birmingham. Nicely laid out with a good cafe
C. P.
This gallery is really weird sometimes, really rewarding sometimes. They rotate the display to feature a new artist about 3 times a year so it's worth visiting once each time they do if you're local to the area.
E. A.
Lovely modern but small gallery in a historic part of Birmingham, real day out. Ikon bookshop and narrow boat are also fantastic. They do a lot to help the arts community in Birmingham too. Would recommend, worth a visit.
A. F.
The musical lift was a special highlight
N. P.
I love this gallery! I recommend you go and have a bite at the York cafe!
P. T.
Very interesting place and great café.
A. P.
Lots of interesting exhibits, staff are very helpful and friendly.
A. A.
Ikon is one of the most interesting art galleries I've been to yet. I love their exhibits. They're thought provoking and culture inclusive. I come back time after time. Love the cafe downstairs too.
P. M.
The temporary exhibition about social networks was really astonishing!! Very great time there and a lady just explained us what this was about before let us to our thoughts!
Beautiful building too, was really nice to be there !
J. R.
Really interesting gallery holding unique exhibits. I'm not an artist myself so had trouble understanding the "art" of certain exhibits but overall enjoyed my time there.
K. L.
The only decent contemporary art gallery in the west midlands! A lovely place with regular performances and events. Don't miss the singing lift!
S. W.
As always, my visit with our "gallery"art appreciation group was superb.
Haroon Mirza's exhibition is really interesting. Dan our expert guide gave us clear explanations making everything enjoyable and easier to understand.
Unfortunately I (we) missed the Crows because they were too subtly displayed.
W.
It's hip, it's cultured, it's free....but I never want to stay for more than 10 minutes. I think it's something about the feng shui. So much metal...maybe a warm colour and an indoor water feature would make it more welcoming.
S. S.
Visit this place a couple of times a year and there's always something thought-provoking on. The staff are invariably lovely and very knowledgeable; I was waiting for someone who was going up Perrott's Folly and it was really nice to talk to the team stationed there. I love that they've acquired a York's outpost now, too - the drinks are exceptionally good and frankly a bargain.
R. B.
I heard great things about this barber shop so thought I would go for a abstract trim. Though I never discovered the part that cuts your hair as its a massive building spanning three floors they did have plenty of galleries of art which I thought was strange for a barbers shop. They also had a excellent elevator that I could ride up and down in all day. Going up sounds like the ascent to the heavens of an angel. For a barber shop it sure had a good ambiance and kept very clean with no hair trimmings ob any of the floors.
The staff there where very friendly but kept giving me weird looks when I enquired where the barbers chairs where located.
Overall it was a good experience even if my absence of hair did not get the trim I was hoping.
I would give the place 9 barber signs out of 10.
C. L. J.
Lovely building tucked away with great light spaces, but at the time for me limited interesting art content.
Cool coffee shop.
Worth a stop but maybe going too far out of your way for.
C. S.
I always visit when I'm in Birmingham. Really nice space with interesting exhibits. I haven't been in the cafe but usually looks busy which is a good sign
I. G.
The work of modern artist who, in my opinion, is a real artist, but hay may faced alot of bad emotional hardships during his life such as oppression, violence, depression. Most of hiss artworks reflect the pain and mystery behind very simple objects.
He demonstrates the dark bad side of simple items in our life like sandwich, ice cream, etc.
The museum is free and weird, you will fell like that you are in adventure or horror movie. I don't recommendations the exhibit for kids and toddlers.
C. T.
Great gallery right next to the canal. Saw an amazing exhibition of Hew Locke. Really beautiful space, lovely, knowledgeable staff and brilliant gift shop.
O. A.
I love the Ikon gallery
Every new exhibition offers new information and perspective, the harmonic lift they have installed as a constant art piece makes the glass elevator trip bareable (not a problem if you don't mind lifts).
Freindly staff with expert knowledge on the artists; with attached yorks cafe it's perft for a day out
L. A.
Small gallery but has some interesting things to see. Staff are very knowledgeable and engage well with the public. It also has a great cafe and outdoor terrace.
L. H.
I quite liked the gallery as there were different media across different floors however there could have been more. Only needed to spend 30mins here really. Still nice for something different to do in Birmingham.
T. P.
Excellent place with a great curation of contemporary work. Also has many other art projects involving the local area.
I also bumped into Dr Jordan Peterson here whilst listening to his audio book, so it’s go serendipity too
S. K.
Cool modern art gallery with a couple of interesting exhibitions. Nice little shop selling local books and postcards too. Well worth an hour of your time.
P. M.
The most inspiring art hub in The Midlands. They've given me and my son many thought provoking and enjoyable days, with innovating and exciting exhibitions. We particularly enjoy the summer events outside and the legendary elevator piece by Martin Creed - the best lift in the country.
A.
Sometimes it's rubbish, sometimes it's a laugh like the time I took my dad and the walls had small white canvases with nothing on them. Other times it is very good. The dust storms were excellent. You never know what you are going to see.
N. B.
The exhibitions are free and it allows you to look and understand new art and subjects you had never come across. Good for those interested in galleries and need inspiration.
L. S.
Really lovely place, friendly staff, and a great cafe incorporated with the art gallery, an amazing and interesting place to walk around on 3 floors, also it is a beautiful building! Would definitely come back!
A. R.
A beautiful, quirky gallery to perfectly set off the art displayed
E. P.
Very friendly staff and great location for a quick looking round. I guess modern art just isn't my favourite but I did find some interesting things. My three years old daughter liked it.
M. L.
Intenational standard exhibitions, the two at the moment are fabulous, gorgeous building, the lift is not to be missed!, great cafe with lovely views accross the square.
M. &. D.
Amazing experience. Simple as that. Staff was friendly and willing to help and explain the actual pieces of Art. Exhibition also was impressive, unfortunately no pictures as I respect fine art not to be snapped in the internet.
D. S.
The cafe at the Ikon was fantastic. Excellent pot of Tea, with a slice of Spinach cake. Fresh herbs growing around the patio smelt great. Very good, friendly service.
S. S.
Nice contemporary art gallery. Good exhibition on at present. Set in Brindley place, pleasant part of central Birmingham.
P. D.
Just a real treasure, fab exhibitions, shop and cafe
N. P.
Always worth popping in when passing. Exhibitions always worth seeing. Nice atmosphere. friendly staff. Interesting music playing in lift.
K. E.
Fantastic shop with great range of art books and novelty gifts. Interesting gallery - sometimes the exhibits seem obstinately obscure.
E. A.
We love going to the Ikon gallery as a family. Occasionally, one of the exhibitions may not be very suitable for children so it's a good to check.
C. B.
This is a special place with ever changing exhibitions. Great for a short art treat during lunch. Great cafe on site. Give generously, to support the Gallery.
M. P.
I saw only one installation and I liked it weary much. And the shop, place and staff is great. Only minus, the exhibition wasn't placed in the space very good
M. M.
Nice gallery but small free entry
A. C.
Amazing exhibits, as always
C. E.
Always like to pop in. More often than not I don't understand the art works, but always interesting. Shame they stopped serving tapas, but the café is still nice.
J. A.
Interesting art, great coffee and cakes from York's Cafe, cool architecture, what more could you want
R. R.
Well worth a visit! Exhibits always thought provoking, change regularly. The recently opened York's café on the ground floor is also worth trying out!
A. S.
For an small contemporary art gallery IKON is "As good as it gets".
I have been to many of the exhibitions at IKON and no two are alike. Each has their own unique feel, message or story to tell. IKON is great at displaying wow pieces as well as some very abstract pieces. Don't worry though, I recommend you pick up the free guides before you go in, usually in a container on the wall. They can be very helpful in giving you a rundown of who the artist is and some of the meaning behind their work.
Artists from all over the world have displayed here and it's especially know to feature UK premieres of work from individuals who would otherwise not have the opportunity.
It's also completely free so you have no excuse not to pay it a visit.
M. O.
A compact, beautifully laid out building with an interesting mix of exhibitions.... And make sure you take the elevator.
M. A.
Pictures uploaded recently were from craft event, which went great. Was exposed and surprised by what birmingham offers from leather skills to Risograph printing products and services. Beside that IKON hosts shows that are well curated by various artists too. I advise attending that site and especially if there new events within or in the area , besides who would say no to a good cup of coffee from Yorks, located on the ground level of IKON.
s. S.
Nice gallery. Free to get in. Normally something of interest to see. Exhibitions change every few months. Good shop and nice food available.
N. T.
Lovely place. Nice and clean with friendly staff. Some exhibitions are better than others but it's a question of personal taste. Free entry.
J. M.
Brilliant... visually stunning and the art can be great too.
J. L.
Great gallery and my kids (2 & 4) made birdhouses in the family area. It was very enjoyable!

Can vary on experience depending on exhibits so that will hinder the result but shows what a contemporary gallery should be
D. C.
Great use of original building in the exciting Brindley Place. Excellent cafe with highly inventive food and to my mind brilliant espresso coffee.
P. R.
Wonderful gallery space and a great gift shop selling a wide range of books gifts and stationery items.

Always enjoy take a moment of calm at IKON. Rarely anything less than inspiring. Only downside is I think it would be even better with an expanded bookshop.

Our first visit to the Ikon specifically to see the small Carlo Crivelli exhibition. The nine works of this C15 century painter were well displayed for easy viewing. The accompanying exhibition guide was very informative. An enjoyable experience.
