A great museum helping children to understand more about geology & dinosaurs. Although not big in size, there's plenty to learn and explore. Greeted with a big dinosaur on arrival, all staff were pleasant and easy to deal with. No charge for entry

I really loved the way the museum walks us through evolution, the different evidences, the formation of fossils and Femur of the dinosaur and how the different minerals and rock look was very beautiful.

Small, but interesting. With our grandchildren (6 and 3 years old) we spent there 1,5 hour. Place for snack, place with sheets of paper and colours. And last but not least - it's free.

Stopped off here to break up a long journey as it was free entry. Wasn't expecting much but my dino mad Son had a great time. Staff provided activity sheets for kids and the exihibits were interesting enough for me, someone who has no interest in geology. We stayed about 45 minutes. Well worth a visit as a stop off to pass some time. Spent a few quid in small gift shop.

This is a truly wonderful place, for grown ups and children alike. There are multiple activity sheets for children to complete as they make their way around, and so much to learn and do. We visit regularly, and our daughter finds new things to amaze her each time

Really worth visiting. Est 2 hours plus to truly digest and study the info offered. Interesting variety of well presented exhibits and inspiring display cases. Adequate lighting. Clean accessible toilets in building. Used Blue Badge, free parking right by doorway. Step free access and large internal lift to Upper floor was real benefit. Enjoy.

A fabulous hidden gem, excuse the pun. Myself and the kids had an amazing few hour opening draws and discovering fascinating things. Really lovely. Not massive but I don't think that's a bad thing. You can really dive into what is there.

I love museums like this: pocket sized, so easy to explore without getting information overload, yet crammed with interesting displays and information. We spent about an hour looking around the main room downstairs. As well as information about the history of the collection, the display takes you through the history of life on our planet (if you progress in a clockwise fashion around the room). The big bonus is that entry is free (suggested donation of £5, which we paid).

Not a big museum, but artefacts are beautiful and it show some interesting pieces of fossils, amazing gamestones it's definitely worth to go - we have spent 2 hours in this museum on ☔ raining day and it wasn't very busy. Small shop with hot drinks and 🍪 cookies, clean toilets. Entry and parking is free.

Decent free little museum. The museum in itself is a historic site having been in operation since the 19th century and seeing old photos of what visitors were exposed to was interesting! Good information around different types of rocks, fossils and dinosaurs (to mention a few key areas) woru plenty of samples to see and touch (rocks, and reconstructions of skeletons). Within the grounds of the first single campus university in the country, which is a treat to walk around (We went back with our 4 kids having both graduated from the university over a decade ago)

Little gem of a place, quite small so you can see everything in an hour. Great displays on the earth's geological and biological history. Only downside is that there isn't a public car park close by, so it's a 10 minute walk across campus.

Very nice museum with vast collection of rocks and fossils, some of them you can even touch!! I especially liked the microscope where you can zoom in on fossilized microbe samples. I easily spent 2 hours there. They have also got a corner with all sorts of magazines related to science and history. Shop sells very beautiful specimens of rocks.

Brilliant hidden gem in Edgbaston. Spent maybe an hour to an hour and a half here but could have easily spent longer. Little place but loads of information and brilliantly laid out. Lots of children here who loved it so that was great to see - children taking an interest in geology and not just dinosaurs! Will visit again!!

I love this little museum! It is right by University train station so is easy to get to. They do a lot of free childrens activity days during school holidays, which are great fun.

It is free. This building has limited signs to find the entrance. You can go up to it not via a stepped route. The entrance is marked with a big flag. Please note that there is no parking or limited. The museum itself is accessible using wheelchairs or taking children in a pram but getting there either if disabled or with young children in a pram is interesting. Get ready to find the long path. Inside the museum has a range of displays also at a range of heights. They have clearly marked information. They also have clipboards and activities for children, suitable for 2-5. They had two large dinosaur bone models and several skulls. As well as a wall of rocks and a good display on precious gemstones. They have some seating as well, if you need a break whilst looking. They have a few interactive displays. They have a specially designed school room. There is no museum cafe but a Starbucks and Costa in walking distance both have no parking. I enjoyed it and think an age of ranges would enjoy this.

Friendly staff, nice walk up through Birmingham University grounds, and for dinosaur fans, some visually interesting fossils to view. Being a geology museum there is a lot more, including precious stones, minerals, lifecycle of volcanic rock etc. Around 1 hour should be adequate to view the collection.

This museum of natural history might be small but it packs in a lot of exhibits and information. The displays are varied in presentation and are at different heights, so even the smallest toddler can get up close and personal with the exhibits without a parent throwing a back out. As well as the three downstairs exhibit areas and one upstairs room, there is a room full of tables and chairs free for anyone to use. They kindly have colouring pencils and prehistoric animal print outs freely available for anyone to colour in. The gift shop is small but has a nice selection of items and sells coffee. Parking is difficult on a weekday as it's part of the university of Birmingham's campus but on the weekend it is possible to drive right up to the front of the museum and park there.

As a former student in the faculty of geology it was interesting to see what's changed in the Lapworth museum in the last 20 years. I'm aware it was voted one of the museums of the year after a refit last year. It's light and airy, with a variety of fossils which will really get the kids interested in the subject, although there's more about minerals and rock samples too. I liked that it reused some of the old display cabinets from my day. With some interactive elements and videos. Seems really set up for a casual visit or school trips. Was a nice way to spend up to an hour, and the Barber institute is not far away if you want a change of pace.

This is a great museum free or donation to get in depends what you like. It's very well set out and very informative. There are some dinosaur fossils, bones and a little bit of taxidermy. There's a big wall of rocks to look at as well. I think you can buy some rocks in the gift shop if you like.

What a place! I have an 8 year old who is absolutely obsessed with all things fossils and minerals and this place is just brilliant. We were looking for a day out trip and stumbled upon this place via a Google search. The website really doesn't do it justice. Entry is FREE which is just incredible considering the amount of things on display. There is a train stop (Birmingham University stop) just a few minutes walk away so it's just perfect for kids. My son wants to be a geologist when he grows up so I imagine we will be frequenting this place more in the future. From dinosaur bones to diamonds, it really is excellent.

Has a range of geological and other historical displays, with information for all ages. The geology exhibit has interactive models for things like plate tectonics. The mineral and crystal exhibit is very extensive and my favourite part.

My daughter and I went to Lapworth over the school holidays. I've didn't even know anything about it before. I googled museums and this one popped up. It was a chore to find as it's on the university campus. But after finding on road parking, we walked for about 10 minutes to the museum and fall in love. It's small, compared to others we have been too, but it's just lovely. We spent over an hour just looking around, taking pictures and reading. My daughter really enjoyed it, I really enjoyed it. We will be going back again.

The museum has been refurbished a few years back and now has a much more modern presentation of rocks, minerals and fossils with easy to read posters about all these, geological eras and Earth sciences. Perfect fot children if all ages interested in these topics. It's also an excuse to wander through the University campus and wonder at all the knowledge distilled in all these buildings, modern and old.

The museum is on the University of Birmingham campus. The museum is small and its free. The museum focusses on geology and fossils with some really interesting pieces. I've visited twice and my kids really enjoyed it, there is also the Barber institute of art just two minutes walk away. If you combine the two you can have a great free morning or afternoon out. Also with both attractions being on the university campus, there are plenty of coffee shops and places to buy food. Also there are usually children's activities in the holidays.

For a free museum this was a great place for an afternoon out there was loads to see and do for an hour or so and the grounds of the university meant it was a pleasant walk too and from the car. There was quite a bit to keep little ones entertained too.

Visited last year when Dippy the Dinosaur was visiting Birmingham. I found the Lapworth to be far more engaging. It is easier to park at the weekend when there is access to the campus (use the East gate and press the intercom button to speak to security) At the weekend Costa will be open in the sports centre and there is public access to the café. While on the campus a visit to the Barber Institute is a rewarding experience. The collection is remarkable.

Brilliant FREE hidden gem in the middle of birmingham university. Lots of information and activities for kids. My youngest is obsessed with dinosaurs and really loved it here. We will definitely be coming back.

The parking is a pain and it's a bit difficult to locate. The Museum is brilliant and it's free! It's the best fossil Museum I have ever been in. I am hard to please so it has to be good, and this place really is!

Nice place to visit, friendly staff and informative geological display. Covering from precambrian to quaternary period. Lots fossil, mineral and replica pieces on display. Science bit has a interactive globe display which let's you select different geological categories and it is displayed on the sphere. Mineral display with different light modes is worthwhile checking out. It's located on the mezzanine. The have a small shop, cafe and toilets. They had a couple of competition running for Easter hols. Two forms of egg hunts had the kids checking out every display. They learnt a few things along the way. Only thing of note is carpark is about a 10 minute walk.

A museum on the University of Birmingham campus in the Yellow Zone. Good for a quick visit. Several dinosaur skeletons here including the Allosaurus and Pteranodon. Plus various skulls. Also various minerals. The museum was originally on the top floor of the Mason College (overlooking Chamberlain Square, Birmingham) from 1880 and moved to this site in 1920. In walking distance of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, University Station and local bus routes. Near Ring Road South.

It's a great place to visit, we didn't see the geology exibhits as well we're their to see the Sikh History, the birth of our Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his travels, it was well worth the seeing the history and hoe the pholophisy of the Guru was we are all one humanity it's doesent matter what religion you follow we as humans need to be able to live with each other and the universe energy that resides with each living being units us all

Fab place, a lot has gone into making your visit a pleasant one as in very up to date and if you are one for facts and enjoy reading and digesting all that knowledge then this is right up your Street.
