Reviews of Museum of the Jewellery Quarter

Really interesting step back in time. They provide brief tours that provide a thorough background of the era and the people who worked at and ran the jewelry factory. It also includes several demonstrations using the antique equipment to make simple jewelry right in front of you! I’m really glad I went and recommend it.
H. K.
A great little museum. William the tour guide was excellent - very entertaining and interesting. An hour well spent. Lovely and warm as well, which is what you want in February. It was almost eerie to see the papers and machines how the last workers left them in the 80s. It really brought the era to life for me. Good selection of coasters in the gift shop.
K. M.
This is a wonderful little museum, very family friendly and with lots of interest! Plenty to see and enjoy in the museum, but the tour is extra special! Getting to see the inner workings of jewellery making in the 50s and 60s was a real eye opener, and our wonderful tour guide gave lots of additional interesting tidbits and demonstrations.
A nice range of gifts too, from 25p for a little cut out of a dog (which you see the guide do!) to high end jewelry from a number of designers. Highly recommended for a morning or afternoon in Birmingham

Absolutely fantastic. The guides are wonderful and really bring the place alive with their story telling, and the museum itself a fascinating place to step into; like it's been frozen in time. If you're visiting Birmingham (or you live here and have never visited) this is an absolute must-see attraction.
Book a tour around the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and experience what it was like to work in the Smith and Pepper jewellery factory in 1899. The building remains exactly as it did since the day the factory closed for good, the workers tools left sprawled on the work benches with jewellery littering the shelves. The museum tells the story of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, including a demonstration of jewellery making techniques, and a tour around the actual factory itself.

Excellent tour by Debbie, incredible place to visit. Kids loved it and really appreciated the effort put into the tour. Fabulous history and fascinating stories. Think if the amount of jewels created here. Wonderful visit thank you
G. C.
I went on one of the guided tours and I really enjoyed it. The guide was amazing and I learned an incredible amount. The demonstration was very interesting and I really like how everything was in exactly the same place as it was in 1981.I would really recommend visiting this museum especially with children.
a. b.
What a treasure! This museum is absolutely fascinating and the hour long tour is a bargain at just £7. Judy our guide was really informative and really brought the former jewellery manufacturers to life!
P. H.
Amazing insights into jewellery making in the heart of the jewellery making industry of the UK. A real time capsule as the factory is as it was left in 1981...untouched
R. D.
The museum of the Jewellery Quarter was a pleasant surprise, a real gem! The tour guide gently talked us through the history of the company on which the museum is established today (Smith and Pepper, a jewellery manufacturing firm which traded between 1899 and 1981). The tour visit tells the daily life of the workers of companies like S&P, mixed with information on society and customs at the time, and - of course - many details about the specific task of the jewellers who worked there. The tour guide even shared some jewellery techniques while sitting at the same table where the company employees did it back in their time!. Beautiful and dedicated tour, which can be continued in a self-guided manner in the various exhibition rooms available within the same building.

Very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The staff were all very proud of their delightful re-furbished shop and reception. Our second visit, and the museum just gets better !!!
D. R.
Very interesting place, a must place to visit on anyone's list of venues to visit while in Birmingham
K. Z.
I love to a guided tour with many interesting stories and information.
H. H.
Excellent tour of the museum. Lively and knowledgeable guide - William - who really brought the family and place to life. Extremely helpful to my elderly mother with mobility problems so she could thoroughly enjoy the experience. What a gem of a place! Needed longer in the shop as the jewellery looked very tempting...
T. H.
The redeeming feature of this museum is the tour through the workshop - make sure you check times for the next tour to ensure you're there for it. The rest of the museum is very sparse and (to me) not worth the entry fee.
It would be wonderful to expand information and displays about the family history of the previous owners of the factory, the people that worked there and their process of jewellery making. Include photographs from their family collection and stories about the relationships of the people and how their craftsmanship changed over time.
J. s.
A fascinating insight into the production of gold jewelry. A small museum starts the tour and then a guide takes small groups into the factory and talks about the people who opened the business and those who worked there. Lots of interesting facts but also a chance to get hands on with some of the tools used. There is a cafe on site which we did not have time to try and a small shop. We will make more time when we go again.

Well organized museum. Tourguide William was great. Combination of history and practical showcasing made the tour enjoyable. Book tours in advance as they tend to be pretty busy during weekends. Cant book online on the day of the tour (they may fix this later). Nice museum shop on ground floor. Ability to walk around part of the museum while waiting for the tour and after.

What a memorable experience! This is the best guided tour I’ve ever had. I was actually a little late and the tour had already started. Our guide William welcomed me to join the group and quickly told me the previous story so that I could catch up. He didn’t have to do this for me but he went the extra mile, which I really appreciated. As the tour continued, I discovered the amazing facts of this former jewellery workshop some 100 years ago. The distinctive part of the tour was live demos. The guide operated some old machines to show the craftsmanship of the old times. For example, he stamped and cut a piece of metal to show how a brooch was made in old fashioned way. You can really learn a lot and have fun through the tour. William’s outstanding story telling also made the experience truly amazing.
N. B.
We have wanted to visit this museum but our visits to Birmingham had been too rushed.
Made it at last and we weren't disappointed. The guided tour was excellent and the story of this jewellery dynasty so intriguing. Highly recommended.
S. L.
Went in a group of four. There were 6 others on the tour. Our guide was a historian by trade but led the tour very ably and interestingly. Knowledgable about the Smith & Pepper Co. Showed the interesting parts of the factory. Didn't labour points or hit us with masses of facts. Showed good skills at the work benches, kept up a good pace and kept the talk entertaining and light humoured. Certainly highlighted the repetitive, skilled, health hazards and divisive aspects of the jewellery trade. £7 well spent and an entertaining and informative 40minutes.
Museum is easily accessed from the Jewellery Quarter tram station stop.
G. S.
This a must if you are visiting Birmingham, the guided tour is fun and very informative, with the very knowledgeable guide showing you how some of the machines and hand skills were used.
C. L.
Not of great interest to younger children. Tour recommended, advanced booking needed.
D. E.
Fantastic time capsule - excellent tour (led by Rachel, I think) of a factory that is just as it was left after its last shift clocked off and went home. That happened, I believe, in 1981, but because it's a factory that hadn't been updated to nineteen eighties standards (due to the owners being so elderly and stuck in their ways), it gives an insight into a much earlier bygone age. Very good indeed!
A. S.
Although we had never heard of this place my wife and I agreed to visit with friends and we are both delighted that we did.
To call this place a museum is to limit the experience, it has been called a 'time capsule' and this is really true.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting and bought alive this unknown world.
Truly a most interesting experience.
B. P.
An interesting insight into how jewellery was made.
A. S.
A must see if you visit Birmingham and auf you are a jewellery/art/ history lover. It is a little place but everything stays like when it was open. The guide explained us about the all history and... I will not say more. Just go and see! I loved it!
H. R.
Display area is quite small but interesting (although there was another floor we didn't get to). But the tour round the old factory was interesting, informative and entertaining and the guide was very knowledgeable and engaging.
R. M.
Fantastic museum that looks like workers only left yesterday. A piece of history paused for all to see.
The guides really bring the museum to life with their knowledge and passion for the era and the jewellery Quarter in general.
You can get a real appreciation for the working conditions that were faced by people working everyday in the workshop.
J. W.
A visit to the Jewellery Quarter isn't complete without a trip to the museum. Easily one of the best free attractions in the Birmingham, it's up to you whether you want to fork out the £4 for the tour or just have a look around the exhibits (which is free). Make sure you check out the times for the tour beforehand! The workshop is a real slice of history and worth the meager price tag!
C. A.
Really enjoyed visiting and going on the tour. Its a unique experience, the preserved jewellery workshop from 1981 gives a real feel of how the industry worked years ago.
Well worth a visit, the price is very reasonable, tour guides excellent and plenty to see for at least a couple of hours.
C. W.
Me and my mum simply went here to get out the cold and I must admit I wasn't at all excited about it. I thought an hour tour would be dull and boring but I was completely wrong! We both loved it!! Great tour guide and so interesting. Well worth a visit.
M. M.
Not a very big place, my granddaughter's were bored, good if you like history which I do, very warm In there had to remove coat and scarf has a lift if you have mobility problems, but as I am hard of hearing I missed alot of what was said. Nice staff and coffee shop, and the jewelry In the gift shop is made on site
D. A.
Fascinating place. An old factory, trapped as it was when it shut down. Any visit to the Jewellery Quarter should start here. The front of the museum features work by local makers and there is a café with good scones.
The staff are mostly enthusiastic volunteers.
P. L.
It's a great place to learn about the history of Birmingham and local industry. The place is a former jewellery factory with many machines actually used before in the production process. The guided tour was enjoyable and very engaging.
R. L.
Fantastic museum of days gone by in the jewellery quarter, focusing on life for owners and workers in jewellery quarter factory. Great day out for myself and 10 yr old son. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had very well. Varied shop with jewellery and nik naks to purchase. Also cafe on site with outdoor seating available.
P. B.
so my wife decided she wanted to go. brilliant..first mistake was deciding to walk. if you follow google maps it is the most direct but boring 30 min walk from town centre. so either get a cab, or wander down the high street. from the outside i was sure i was going to be having a ball, a bit like being dragged round priarmi.. BUT, it was awesome! the guide was engaging and knowledgeable, the insights were fascinating. But the best bit was the continual realisation that this work place had been abandoned with everyone just leaving one afternoon. I realise some artistic license is involved but even my 15yr old daughter appeared vaguely interested...
T. T.
Fantastic glimpse into the past. A very interesting insight into the history of Birmingham jewellery trade and what it was like to work at Smith and Pepper. The guided tour with Rupert is a must, as the museum itself is not the most exciting.
D. U.
Good exhibits, excellent, informative tour guide. The tour gives a very good feel for what the workplace was like, and insight into both the workers and the family that owned and ran it.
L. B.
Fascinating museum. I was anticipating more actual jewellery but this is a museum of the workshops and offices. The guide was so knowledgeable and demonstrated how the jewellers punched out charms etc. A very interesting place to visit.
M. M.
Small as expected, probably. Historic house, feels crowded even in small group. More talking than actual sightseeing... So you should be really interested into early 20th century jewelry making if you want to come.
M. E.
Brilliant and fascinating. The tour guide was extremely informative and added an extra dimension to the tour where you felt you knew everyone who worked there and what they did.
The café is excellent too.
B. S.
Fairly good. People with an interest in jewelry making may find it particularly attractive. There is a tiny and cosy cafe inside which is really nice. Not much of a jewelry collection but the museum is actually a factory for jewelry production so it is more centeted on the mechanics and processes of making jewelry.
S. B.
Wasn't expecting much...just went to accompany my other half...but found it fascinating....how excellent jewelry was made by Craftsmen on the simplest machinery. The social history aspect was also interesting.
J. H.
We visited the museum on Wednesday, the guide was so informative., and it was great seeing how they worked in the past. It made you feel part of the community. Really pleasant staff.
g. c.
I did a short day of learning basic skills on ring making. £60 for all the training, everything is supplied copper, silver etc. Coffe n biscuits! In the morning you learn to make a template using copper. After a yummy lunch purchased from the Cafe(or bring your own ) we then moved onto working with silver. The lady working with us was calm and funny helping sort out our mistakes! Such a fun experience would recommend it to everyone. No skills required all will be shown n taught in simple step by step tasks. Here is my finished silver spinning ring.
J. F.
Participated in the guided walking tour for 7 quid. The tour was incredibly insightful into the jewellery industry in the jewellery quarter. The perspective is only from a preserved factory with insights into common practises used within the early 100s.
M. R.
Looked around the museum quickly before a Birmingham, Solihull & Sandwell Jazz Festival event started. It's an interesting but small museum that represents this interesting part of Birmingham well. The shop contains very nice souvenirs and a fab selection of sweeties that I could not resist. The performance was held in a small area leading to the cafe. Blue Silk were outstanding and the space intimate. Food was good and there was a small external seating area in which I sat and admired the old buildings that were formerly industrial.
L. G.
Excellent tour guide, really made things come to life
J. N.
Fascinating history of Birmingham's industrial past. Highly recommended. Free entry but the guided tours (a modest charge applies) are essential to get a full visit.
M. W.
Extraordinarily preserved small jewellery factory, apparently left as it was when it closed in the mid 20th century. Knowledgeable guides. Excellent shop, with jewellery for sale from smiths in the Jewellery Quarter. Passable cafe. Several decent places to eat nearby.
M. B.
Visited this while on a trip round the jewellery quarter. It was a good look into the life of a jewellery workshop and the way items were made up until the 80's. The guide was very knowledgeable, well worth a visit.
R. N.
Well worth a visit, fascinating museum. The guided tour was full of interesting information. Forgive the pun but it is a little gem!
R. R.
Brilliant place with a very good guide. Amazing what the council have done to restore it. A must visit when in Birmingham. Combine with visit to the Pen Museum which isn't far away.
M. M.
What's not to love about this place, great guide,a step back in time, with additional exhibits, makes a worth while visit, wish though they had more silver, particularly Nathaniel Mills and jewellery.
J. D.
Great museum, I learned how wicked the jewelry people were back in the day. The tour guide (an older gentleman) was humorous and engaging.
P. C.
Great museum - well worth the full tour for the beautifully preserved workshops. Like stepping back in time. Enthusiastic staff and curators.
S. G.
A very interesting place. A factory seen today as it was left when it closed in 1981. A great guided tour by Carl. Highly recommended.
L. W.
The guided tour was excellent and the museum although rather small is interesting and worth the £7.00 entrance fee.
S. M.
great place to learn about british jewerly industry. it is a former jewerly factory which is a museum now, where you can learn all steps how jewrly used to be made back in the days
S. M. (.
A fascinating place to visit.
G. B.
Walking through history, tells us how Birmingham became so rich. It is just as they left it, as if we're coming in on the next shift. This is the kind of history even the kids enjoy. Thanks
J. B.
Interesting and wonderful that this historic place has been preserved. Brilliant tour guide. Really recommend a visit.
A. J.
This museum, although fairly compact, is one of the best I have been to. Go and visit. This will show you how the area developed and the quality of the local craftsmen.
