Reviews of Avon Valley Railway (Bitton Station)
C. F.
What a lovely little heritage railway. Think it’s only about 3 mile in length but worth a visit if you are near. We went on one of the hottest days of the year so unfortunately they were only running a heritage Diesel engine to avoid the possibility of line side fires. Safety first. But this didn’t detract from this beautiful little railway. Very scenic. £9 per person so reasonably priced. Free parking. Staff were lovely and chatty. Clearly enjoying their work. If only in all heritage railways the staff were so nice. Great cafe, outside seating but we sat indoors in a converted rail coach. Very nice. All in a great few hours spent on a great little heritage railway.
S. M.
Nice steam railway preservation project. Station has a shop, a nice cafe, one platform, and a booking office. There is a decent amount of parking and a small play area. Prices are reasonable and it's on a good cycle route. The train and carriages have been beautifully restored and the journey is wonderfully scenic. They often hold themed events there. For example the Gert Lug Lego days, where large Lego displays are set up and there are various stalls and games. They also put Lego on the train, so you can build as you ride the steamy!
S. K.
Nice train ride.
Lovely old carriages.
Bitton station is in the middle of three stations that are in use on the old line.
Diesel hauled when I visited because it was too hot & dry for steam. (fire risk)
Shop open on running days.
Buffet open every day.
Lovely place for snacks, meals and drinks.
On the Bristol/Bath cycle path too
M. H.
A lovely day out, very reasonably priced. The station had lots going on. The cafe is in an old railway carriage, we didn't have anything to eat on our visit but we will be back as it was highly recommended.
All the staff were very friendly and had lots of time to share the history of the station.
One of our party(in her 30s) had never travelled by rail which made our day out a real adventure for her!
T. S.
Checked out the shop, which had plenty of food and drink. Had a look at the carriages where you can eat and seemed OK, tho, in my opinion, quite basic. Spoke to a visitor who'd had Sunday lunch there and he told us that it gets busy on a Sunday and is best to book. Book or muss out was the expression, so I assume the roast was up to scratch. Toilets and disabled parking available
R. V.
A quaint afternoon reminiscing over the age of steam. We enjoyed our hour trip going up and down the line and seeing Bitton Station so well preserved followed by coffee cake and coffee people watching. We stayed outside at a table at the buffet to watch the train return with complete with those having afternoon tea on the train.
D. D.
Great little place for family days out. We went to a teddy bear picnic event and the whole thing was great for kids. Lucy the magician and JoJo the face painter was amazing.
M. F.
My first time to this place, thought the volunteers / workers were very pleasant and I would be giving this a 4.5 stars if I could simply docking .5 stars because of the length of the track along with the quite high food prices.
Again, staff lovely, everything clean and child friendly, even got a quick small tour of this engine which was great.
H. A.
Friendly staff, really cute station & nice to see the heritage being kept alive. Enjoyed a trip on the train to oldland common and back, will be going back for a walk and a stop in the cafe there!
P. S.
Great place to take both the younger and the very old kids for a look at the trains. Has cafe too. Trains run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
M. R.
Pleasant afternoon spent first having lunch in the buffet in the station and then a ride on the Frys chocolate steam train very helpful staff and definitely value for money, mple free parking, will definitely be going again
K. !.
Great steam train ride. Cafe sells sandwiches, cake, crisps, coffee and beer. All the staff are very friendly. Park just of the car park for kids too.
M. D.
Visited today on one of the Event days, Cake choice of 3 with tea/coffee or soft drink in the Dining Carriage on a 55 min trip. Lovely experience, really good price £18 per person.
A. K.
Really great day out and to have breakfast on a first class carriage was amazing. Really recommend
g. b.
Couldn't p[raise this place more , catch a train , have a lovely meal or refreshing drink here
j. h.
Great cafe with a good range of meals. The bacon sandwiches were excellent.
J.
As a coffee shop attached to a family attraction, it was 5 stars. As a cafe in its own right, the coffee was good but not amazing.
Great atmosphere if you're coming with the kids or stopping in on your way along the cycle path.
C. S.
Been coming here since the 80s, damm I'm old.
Love this place
C. C.
We stopped here for lunch during a bike ride. It was great. The food tastes good and the service was friendly and efficient. We just sat outside on the platform but had a loook in the vintage buffet carriage restaurant which looks really interesting. We'll book to eat in there next time.
D. R.
Family cycled to the station via the cycle path from Bristol.
All-round enjoyable experience.
G. K.
I love this place so much.
Take a picnic and enjoy riding the rails.
£10 for adults, £7 for children.
There's a beautiful picnic spot at the Riverside and a little park near the station, a really wonderful day out x
j. s.
Lovely day out. Beautifully kept railway and station.
D. S.
The First Class carriage "Martha" on a Santa Special train was an excellent experience with comfortable movable armchairs and a Christmas Cracker at each place on decorated tables. Mulled Wine was served and topped up as desired and 4 different cakes plus a mince pie with a locomotive shape pastry topping were enjoyed during the journey. The Polish steam side tank locomotive was of special interest.
A. “. H.
Lovely place to stop for lunch on a cycle ride - try the derail ale, it's a lovely bitter.
B. B.
We had The Pudding Club. Lovely setting and the cakes were delicious.
l. b.
Went on the first class ride today with my mum .
Absolutely loved it 😍
Mulled wine and a delicious selection of cake and mince pie 🥧
The staff are super friendly, attentive and helpful.
Just a wonderful experience
Thankyou to all concerned ❤️
A. P.
Friendly staff and decent menu. An interesting experience eating in a train carriage. Trains not running the day we visited (which I was aware of on advance)
S. “. H.
Stumbled onto it while on the Bristol to Bath pathway,.
If your into stream trains you better head this way, plenty to see and take in with the old engines and carriages dotted around the station.
Loved the cafe and where you sat under the canopy of the old station, gets really busy but it all adds to the atmosphere.
Head down to the end of the line where you will find all sorts that connect it to the rail line.
Didn't get to go on the stream train but it looks fun (if you like that sort of thing)
Oh and if you feel a little deflated there's a handy pump by the side 😁
J. G.
Took my granddaughter for her first Christmas. Absolutely perfect. Great atmosphere lovely little book from Santa. Thank you
M. A.
What a beauty! Straight from the postcard..1st day after lockdown..lucky to find a seat...reminded my daughter of hogwarts express. Such a pleasant positive vibe..all the staff are so friendly and courteous...its a hidden treasure and a must visit...hope the place retains the charm in these trying times.:(
G. G.
Only 4 stars because it was not clear on the website that trains were not running till Feb. The cafe however is 5 star, lovely breakfast and staff. Will visit again to get that last star.
R. A.
Always lovely to walk along the Bristol and Bath cycle path. Can be quite busy however you can take a relaxing walk down by the canal too.
A. P.
The Christmas train ride was super sweet. Rosie loves her book from Santa! X
S. J. G.
Such good value for breakfast with Santa. Very authentic Santa and good presents for the children. Plentiful breakfast.
C. B.
Fantastic breakfast on the train and many thanks to the volunteers who helped my wife with the wheelchair much appreciated... 👍 And kindness
S. L.
Traditional old station, very well kept gardens and if you are lucky you will see the steam train.
I. K.
Visited on a non-running day so quiet and not so much to see. Nice cafe and enjoyed my lunch
C. S.
Lovely ride on the steam train.
The cafe at the station is in an old railway carriage, makes an awesome latte.
C. B. (.
Great little place. Loads of history and the opportunity to ride on some pretty old carriages and engines. There is a restaurant on site along with a gift shop. Definitely worth a visit. There are several plaques dotted around too with information on the different engines and the history they carry.
B. H.
Enjoyed my visit, had breakfast/tea and look around the yard....
J. L.
We visited as part of a corporate volunteering day. We were taking rail joint plates off, liberally greasing them so the rails can expand safely in the heat and then putting it all back together. It was dirty but incredibly fun work. Avon Valley volunteer Doug showed us what to do and had us working as a well oiled team by the end of the day! I'm hoping we can arrange to volunteer here again.
A. M.
We just happened to be walking by before the last train left so we jumped on. The boy loved it (and was free) , everyone there is really friendly and it's a great place to get a coffee or some food.
p. h.
Went on a santa train had a nice time
D. H.
Fantastic train ride 1920s style on a wonderful bit of engineering and a beautifully restored Victorian railway station! Nice cafe too!
J. S.
Steam train is very well run by great people. Takes about 50 mins and great for all the family
N. M. B.
Staff were absolutely lovely!!! The lovely lady was very sorry for my (very slightly) later meal and she gave us a free bowl of chips bless her! The place is beautiful and the atmosphere is perfect. Beautiful beautiful beautiful
M. P.
Took a long walk down to Saltford, really peaceful, the odd cyclist and saw the train twice. Would recommend for anyone wanting a nice dog walk. The coffee was a tad expensive in the cafe, but went down well.
P. W.
Very pleasant little railway that thankfully runs in February half term! Short trips by diesel railcar to both ends of the track, taking about 45mins for a round trip. Under 5s travel free, so it's great for young children, and the cafe serves good food and has a 5* hygiene rating. Parking is free and seems pretty plentiful and there are lots of locos to see, though most are slightly off limits, making photos a little tricky.
A. W.
I just love it here. I have visited twice recently. I,m using crutches at the moment, so it was the perfect place for a coffee and a cake, in the sunshine.
Z. V.
I found this place "by accident" but it was a great afternoon out. Short ride on a steam train up and down few miles of track with tasty cakes on the station is enough to make you smile. All ages and dogs welcome.
M. H.
Excellent little historical railway, they don’t have a long run but it’s a nice trip for the kids. They get to see a steam train and get out a couple of times to see it decouple and move around. The volunteers are really friendly and helpful, it’s a nice place for a visit. They have a cafe on site too, but we skipped it so can’t comment on quality.
A. D.
Two of us spent a lovely afternoon aboard the pines express with the Sapper WD132 engine (a beautiful machine). The staff where very kind and the meal was delicious. Would reccomend.
G. M.
Good...
Staff was very good...
At few places the landscape was beautiful...
Kids really enjoyed it, New things to experience.
Duration was approx 45 minutes...
L. P. M.
Fab sausage sandwich & lovely coffee in a busy, popular cafe, well done!
P. H.
Love this place, been twice over the past couple of years, staff really friendly and food is great. Just a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
N. R.
Nice place to fill an hour or 2
K. r.
We had a lovely family trip on the steam train today.my grandchildren loved it.the staff were fantastic and very friendly, we are returning for the Teddy bears picnic and the santa train
M. H.
Went on the dining train today, roast beef main course, followed by cheese and biscuits, and then a tea.
All very tasty!
a. w.
Lovely couple of hours out with the grandchildren, riding on the train. Took about an hour. Lovely countryside. All covid safe in the carriages. Grandchildren enjoyed themselves.
Q.
Very friendly staff at the cafe, nicely laid out, could be updated with a better park etc. for little ones.
C. W.
Ran by a growing team of volunteers, the AVR often puts on a very good show with various vintage locomotives and rolling stock. The 3 stations on the line all have period styling, with Bitton as the main station.
Situated close to Keynsham's main line station, visitors from further afield should have no problems getting here, by following the brown sign posts.
The picturesque location of the Avon Valley railway makes it a lovely place to go for a walk or a cycle ride.
Other vintage vehicles often appear in the car park too.
Be sure. To come along and pay a visit - The volunteers love a good chat and the site is wonderful.
M. K.
Love Avon valley Railway. We live local so great to pop down see the trains (even have a ride sometimes) nice walk up to the other stations if you fancy it, just watch out for the cyclists!
Cafe - clean and tidy nice for a snack all staff are friendly.
Tips- look out for special days like 1940s, Santa specials, teddy bear picnic etc.
B. Y.
Very pleasant day, friendly staff.
J. A.
Experienced the Curry Evening diner train service. The station and platform areas have been lovingly restored and there’s plenty of car parking with excellent signposting in the local area. Online booking was very straightforward with tickets arriving in the post a few days after booking.
The seating was very comfortable with a nice ambience and the staff were attentive, passionate and genuinely lovely. For all these aspects mentioned aboveI would give five stars. The reason I’ve given three (on balance) was because of the food. I wasn’t expecting a five star meal or even a convincingly authentic curry, but what was served fell short of even the lowest of expectations unfortunately.
Extremely over cooked and stodgy rice (with peas, just why?!) and a exceptionally bland curry containing far more peas (what’s their obsession with peas?) than meat. A piece of stale Naan bread was also included, bone dry and crisp instead of fluffy and fresh.
I honestly don’t think that staff thought there was anything wrong with what they were serving, and as they were so nice I didn’t want to complain. However, it does need to be said. Perhaps curry just isn’t their thing. I’m aware cooking and serving food for large numbers on a vintage train can’t be easy, however with just a bit more effort and thought put into it they could transform the food so that’s it on a par with the friendly and welcoming service and overall experience.
J. H.
What a great experience! Wonderful lunch served whilst travelling on a steam train. The staff are wonderful too. 4 stars would have been 5, I expected the scenery to have been a little more stunning.
F. G.
A fun ride and dogs allowed. If you like steam engines this is for you...
K. T.
This historic railway based near Keynsham has a variety of engines and rolling stock that they run on a relatively short length of track that has the Bristol - Bath bike path. They hold a variety of special events during the year - we went on the Santa train. A pleasant morning riding the rails and watching the kids enjoy a visit from Santa on the train.
A. M.
Great day out. Kids really enjoyed the train rides. Plenty to see and do to last most of the day and a good café when people get hungry and thirsty.
S. D.
This was a lovely day out for young train enthusiasts! Inside and outdoor eating area and souvenir shop. The countryside views are a beautiful bonus!
M. T.
Really nice and accommodating, wheelchair accessible and friendly. Has a cafe and nice train events most of the year.
A. B.
Great experience good value
D.
So the truth is; it's great fun for an hour, unless you were really into trains.
The food wasn't something I'd recommend. So either eat before or after. Also the price of the food was a rip off for what it was.
However the train was cool, your on it about an hour. However I'd say we were sat still for 40 mins of this hour.
I can not fault the staff, I believe all are volunteers and they were great. Very friendly and very helpful.
So the only real thing to let this place down is the over priced, poor food.
L. B.
Lovely Christmas trip for the kids. The santa train is still just as great as its always been
A. T.
Great place. Plenty of free parking. Cafe on site, in an old carriage. Adjacent to the cycle path. Bike hire shop about 400 yards along the road. Small garden area with a few benches. Access OK for wheelchairs and prams etc.
M. H.
A great place to visit and a wonderful place to eat. The cottage pie and veggies was lovely today.
M. P.
Heritage railway in a picturesque setting within easy reach of Bristol and Bath. Nice walk parallel to the track, too.
J. M. S.
We've been on 2 of their dining experiences now. Pie and Ale, and Sausages and Cider. Both were absolutely amazing. From the friendly guards on the platform, the lovely ladies who serve you, and the amazing chef that caters for dairy intollerant people like myself. Food is lovely. Service is 5*. Very well organised.
We sadly couldn't go too far down the track due to works that were going on, but just going back and forth listening to the chugging of the engine and smelling the smoke was very nostalgic for our parents who came with us.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff. Can't wait to go back.
L. W.
Really enjoyable couple of hours...boys n girls will love this delightful little Steam Train. Staff are really lovely too. Large car park...and a varied cafe..best cappuccino for a long time. Would definitely visit again .
P.
Cycled here from Fishponds, along the cycle path/old railway line.
Lovely choice of food and drinks.
Lots of cycle racks for bikes, plus free parking for cars.
On the afternoon we were there (Wednesday) they were shunting some of the trains, which was an added bonus!
D. P.
Awesome place to take your kids cycling. It can get busy though, so try and keep to one side of the path! From here to Bath is the nicest part of the cycle track
W. p.
Lovely small preservation site. Station has a small cafe serving a variety of hot and cold foods. Secondhand book "coach". And a shop. Right next to a cycle path so you can watch trains and stay fit!!
P. S.
Great time at Bitton, and on train. Love the fact that the journey isn't too long and get 2 opportunities to get out and watch loco running round. Whole family event, young grandchildren loved it.
S. G.
Very good place for the cycle track. Also good coffee shop and seating area
J. H.
So here's the deal. The train is really cool if you're into that sort of thing and tea on a train is a great idea. The issue is that you pay £20 odd per person to be on the train and they have pensioner volunteers providing the service, which is nice but very slow. We went up and down the track twice before getting any tea! Regardless, it was a very enjoyable day out.
A. H.
There are some great events during the year
K. D.
Very nice quite, food was nice good friendly cafe.
A.
brilliant, stop for a coffee, or lunch or dinner.. watch the trains, go for a walk, or take the bike... stay for a 1940's weekend or Peppa pig.. don't overlook this gem of a place.
B. H.
Lovely day out took my special need daughter and the staff was great with her nothing was to much for them will be going back
A. S.
Lots of stuff going on and the Bristol to Bath runs along side the track and through the sidings, so you can get a good view of the collection of stuff they have amast. We were walking down the path and saw lots of happy dinners traveling on the train, so we stopped off for some cake (nice home made carrot cake in my case) and a drink (lemon float - not had one of them in years). Both indoor (dinning carriage) and outdoor seating available, some undercover.
D. T.
Only travelled over a short stretch of track in either direcction. Rather underwhelming.
M. P.
A lovely place for a pleasant afternoon out. The train experience is well organised and very authentic. There is a good cafe and also a shop.
R. P.
Takes you back in the glory days of rail travel. A truly memorable experience
C. C.
An unusual place to eat in an old railway carriage.A very good menu.
A. M.
Lovely place to go go Good Food staff very friendly you couldn't wish for more
j.
Loads of fun for family days out. Well worth the money too, very reasonable priced tickets. Lovely cafe with lots of good tasty food available! Really lovely setting and staff always really ready to help and explain things to fascinated kids and adults alike! Would definitely recommend
S. L.
What can l say,I have known this railway from when it was running under BR. Now as a preserved heritage line it lives on. The volunteers running it are doing a magnificent job keeping it going. Whether you are a railway anorak or not it is definitely a place to visit lots to see and do and very friendly staff. There is also a path for cyclists and walkers.
m. a.
Not bad, abit run down but the grand children enjoyed it , over rated though
R. S.
Fantastic steam railway with very friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. The buffet food is fantastic too!
D. B.
Staff lovely and friendly. Grandson loved it.railway only running half of the track today. But nevertheless througly enjoyable.Shop good for railway items for children. Didn't sample cafe. Parking easy. The only slight hitch was booking the tickets site that railway use very confusing
A. D.
Great place for families, lovely staff. Great food and drinks.
C. B.
What a lovely place, well worth a visit.
K. W.
Lovely stop on our walk, lovely staff, nicely laid out area and watching the train puff back and forth whilst eating lunch was great. A great range of food for most, unfortunately not much in the savory side for gluten free/ dairy free vegetarians, but they did gluten free bread with some fillings such ham and cheese. Nice gluten free cake selection though. Good time had by all.
F. B.
We visited for the Christmas train, was incredibly well done,so cozy and christmassy
P. C.
Santa Special was excellent, very good value .
S. P.
Lovely preserved railway, nice staff/volunteers.but I am biased as I love steam railways.
a. j.
Loving bacon sardnie on a carriage with a walk past the railway to burn it off
G. L.
Good free carpark. Although railway wasn't running when we visited, the Cafe is not to be missed and is open every day(seating in a repurposed railway carriage or outdoor sunny patio overlooking station), serving delicious breakfast lunches and teas/snacks...very affordable, generous and delicious food. Good place for stop off/ taking family to eat.Deserves more support. Well kept public areas . Outdoor seating. Will be returning to eat again and hopefully ride the railway! Also is on the Bristol-Bath footpath/cycle way!
M. H.
Wonderful place to visit!
t. m.
Nice food in the Rose restaurant, pleasant journey on the train, not crowded. Well worth a visit
M. M.
Love these trains. Carriages remind me of trips to the seaside when I was a lad.Lovely cafe on the station.
A. R.
Good day out good not for just children but for adults as well. Recommended
I. H.
Free parking nice food reasonable prices and steam trains aswell a good day out
M. E.
Reasonable prices, good selection of snacks and more. Interesting when trains running.
K. K.
We went here for a murder mystery event, the event itself was good, fun actors and entertaining. Unfortunately the food fell well below expectation. I am gluten free and my meal was literally a pepper filled with boiled rice. For my dessert I was offered fruit. Really not good enough for the money paid. I won't be visiting again unfortunately.
P. S.
It was a lovely look back in time, so nostalgic brought back memories.
Enjoyed the whole experience.
w. b.
Has a nice view especially near the water
D. M.
Great day out. Friendly volunteers, good cafeteria and lovely scenery.
Y.
Lovely place to walk, run or have a bike ride. Also, the train runs up and down quite often.
R. R.
Teddy bear picnic was a fabulous experience. 6 miles ride in the railway. We saw the engine exchange up and close twice. Plenty of opportunity to take pictures inside and outside the train. Face painting and magic show was cherry on the top. Extremely friendly staff! Cafe, book shop and more for grown ups too. Fantastic experience today 😊
J. D.
Lovely spot for a couple of hours. The line wasn't fully open when we visited which was a shame...but still great to see a real steam train ! Om site coffee shop.
L. P.
Lovely place to visit, loved all the trains and it's very pretty. Especially appreciated the free standing bike pump. Plenty of places to lock up your bike. The breakfast was passable but sadly was starting to get cold by the time it reached me
p. s.
Gets busy with the good weather we got our ticket online
J. H.
Great day out for the adults as well as the kids. Arrived & parked up in the free car park, purchased the train tickets- the train arrived on time - enjoyed the ride from Bitton to Oldland and Avon Riverside then back to Bitton.
S. L.
Trip down memory lane, the volunteers are priceless
L. P.
Lovely cycle path, full of runners, walkers and cyclists. However, most of the cyclists passing me like to creep up behind you and overtake at speed without warning. I use my bell or call out, its that simple!
J. D.
Just been to Avon Valley Railways 1940s wartime weekend. Am amazing event; lots of friendly reenactors and steam trains what more could you want !
R. &. E. H.
Had lovely tea and scone. Plenty of seating.
J. C.
Perfect cycle track for families. We always park at the railway station as this is an easy place to get the bikes off and safely get on the cycle path. Bonus being you will usually spot a train! My 3 year old can easily navigate the cycle path on a balance bike, just watch for stinging nettles along the way! Would recommend trousers if possible! Path is very suitable for a cycle trailer for the baby too. Have a bell if you can to let people know you are approaching, and keep to the left for ease. A few places to stop along the way with benches to sit down on.
R. H.
Fabulous journey back thru Time. Great staff and great train ride
L. G.
Wonderful little heritage railway, great staff and well kept locomotives
M. F.
Pleasant little railway with friendly people and good food at the cafe....
m. S.
This is my favourite local spot, breakfast is good, nice homemade cakes and a cuppa tea. I lead walks around this are and include local history, willsbridge and the coalmine and Dramway history
D. B.
Just nice good crew
M. B.
Really nice scenic location and great cycle route.
Wouldn't recommend stopping for any food though.
M. F.
Nice to go there again with my wife & daughter this time it was our Wedding Anniversary. It was a nice afternoon out.
J. E.
Went on a Pudding Club event and really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend it!
J. E.
Great to be able to get on and off train to see it shunting. Stunning scenery. Exciting. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. Under 5 free. Able to get off, do a country walk and get back in later. Will be going again.
M. D. V.
Great day out for the entire family. Buffet offers good selection of food and drinks and reasonable prices
A. S.
Exploring Bitton Train Station and taking the short steam train journey is fun and educational. This place is run by a bunch of dedicated volunteers that insure you get plenty out of your visit.
M. H.
Great visit, lovely old steam train ride, very pleasant staff
M. K.
Great day out
E. R.
A lovely railway with very welcoming stuff. We enjoyed our train ride and the railway had a great buffet at Bitton. Also not expensive to visit.
D. M.
Wow! We had a wicked cool bean Santa adventure. Considering you are all volunteers, you did so much better than all the commercial operators. Thank you very much for a lovely day.
R. S.
The big attraction is of course the railway which has trains running on it occasionally. A short length of track but some lovely countryside to see. The station is authentic but thankfully the station buffet is far better than British Rail would have been. There is a dedicated kitchen and servery but you eat in one of two dining cars. I would describe them as rough and ready. The management is a bit slack though. No trays, no serviette's and cake stands stores on the floor where humans and dogs can contaminate them. Food was good and cheap. Take the kids, they'll love it!
P. C.
Excellent afternoon, well organised and service. Highly recommended
S. B.
Cast yourself back to the days (not necessarily of steam, I'm not that old) but those small varnished wooden carriages. And if you're too young for that, it will give your imagination a nudge. OK, so it's largely run by volunteers. The advantage is that they love it and are happy to tell you about it. The slight disadvantage is that maybe their eyesight's not great and they can't read your ticket on your phone, and maybe the person serving you rolls her eyes and has an unfortunate attitude when you order tea (she doesn't like carrying a tray along the carriage, she tells us). She's not so old. She's not Mrs Overall, and she manages it well. It made us laugh. Otherwise, she and all others are friendly and welcoming. It felt authentic, as Millennials say, including really very dirty windows! The fish and chip lunch was very good, and even served with white bread and butter. Reminded me of Wonderloaf and Mother's Pride! You do get a sense of deja vu, strongly aided by the usable line being extremely short. As a result you go back and forth many times with pauses to watch the engine changing ends. This is a delightful little trip. You can buy a range of drinks and the station is vintage too. Easy parking, only 15 mins from the centre of Bath. Go. It's good fun, very decent value and they might eventually raise enough money to extend the line.
J. B.
Very popular with visitors as well as cyclists passing through. Good amount of seating with some cover. Good choice if menu and served fairly quickly, but the prices reflect the popularity.
K. M.
Had a wonderful lunch (fish and chips) on the train for Father's Day. A slow but steady trip up and down the tracks from Bitton for 2 hours.
The gift shop was fully stocked.
Highly recommend for a family trip.

Absolutely our favourite place in the area. Friendly people, down to earth cafe. Steam engines as well. Been going for over 25 years now. Went there yesterday, (2/2022) work on improving facilities carrying on bearing fruit. Improved seating, WHSmith kiosk, nice warm carriages. All mixed in with heady smell of smoke, steam and hot oil. Love it still!
F. C.
We had such a wonderful afternoon at Avon Valley Railway. The Teddy bears picnic was great fun. The little lunch box at the cafe. The magician Dave Hickory and the Jojo face painters were fantastic. Run by really friendly people.
A. B.
Lovely afternoon, kids on train and picnic after
d. g.
Friendly staff. Lovely experience.
R. C.
Nice stop over on great cycle route from Bath to Bristol
L.
Very friendly, volunteer-run steam train. Only a short ride but the ticket lasts all day, so you can ride up and down as many times as you like. I like to get off at the Avon and take a boat ride on the river - this is extra and run by a separate company but it is VERY good. We saw herons and even a kingfisher on our last trip. It is very steep down to the river but volunteers helped my mother in her wheelchair - the boat has a lift and very helpful staff. The railway runs a variety of events during the year and the Christmas Special is always popular. The place is fully accessible and they even have spare wheelchairs. Staff are knowledgeable and will answer questions. There is a coffee shop where they sell cakes and ice-cream and, usually, an outside display of model railways, Lego or such like (usually in a marquee). There are fantastic walks along the Bristol-Bath railway path where you can see all manner of wildlife and take a relaxing rural stroll. Look them up online to find out about booking meals on the train and children's activities. A good day out for the whole family.
D. W.
On our visit we got to ride the train for 45 mins before seeing Santa 🎅 The kids absolutely loved it and would happily do again. Value for money is great too.
K. H.
Lovely little place to eat. Food was amazing and friendly staff. Def will be returning.
l. w.
Lovely place to visit, the food is great and at a reasonable price considering you're at a historical train station beside the cycle path, friendly and welcoming staff. Great for families to visit and take in a train ride or a visit to the small park just the other side of the cycle path.
All station staff are volunteers and the station relies on donations so please leave a few pounds!
R. K.
Remarkably still open in Dec. Hot chocolate and a toasted teacake. What every Path cyclist needs after all those diversions.Sit outside in the sun.
G. M.
My family (all 4 generations) enjoyed a magical time on the Santa special. Many thanks to all the staff who made this event one we will all treasure for many years to come. Thank you! 😊
M. C.
Very interesting former station that does steam train journeys several times a year. Open for breakfast and lunch or light bites that can be taken in one of two converted railway carriages. Toilets, parking and gift shop also on site.
N. C.
Just love this place. Relax with a drink and bite to eat, take a train ride or browse the shop. Staff polite and helpful. Recommend this place to visit or pass through whilst out cycling or driving.
J. O.
Wonderful place with attentive volunteers. Jolly disappointing though that most of the stock was beyond the reach of my camera.
A. M.
Enjoyable to visit here for the first time and lots to see with a good mixture of engines. Will be back
J. S.
We love it here with our 2 kids and dog! The breakfasts are great and the Sunday lunch is excellent- but you need to book! The theatre events are so fantastic and the children's days are well thought out and good value.
p. p.
Very busy English breakfast served in the railway carriages
s. h.
Lovely set up, cafe and toilets available and plenty of bicycle parking. Was nice to see the little steam engine going up and down as people were learning to drive it. The cafe stopped serving hot food at 3pm and there was no sign to say this before ordering which was a shame but everything else was lovely!
C. N.
Going back to my childhood where I went every weekend as I lived round the corner, little steam ride, cheeky food, nice blast from the past
S. R.
Great piece of history, majority maintained by volunteers. Diesel and steam engines run on selected days up and down a small part of the track which is fantastic to experience. Cafe offering breakfast, hot dinners and sandwiches that can be enjoyed on an old train carriage or under outdoor seating. Public conveniences available. Gift shop and free parking available.
J. G.
Been visiting this place for many years, it's small and beautiful and full of character
M. H.
Lovely trip with the grandchildren, they all enjoyed a ride on the steam train. Then on to the cafe for a lovely cream tea for the adults. Well worth a visit. They also do a lot of theme trips including meals, so worth having a look on their website to see their upcoming events.
M. C.
Now really good welcome from the parking person. Really good in the ticket shop. We waited a lot before being served in the train for the food but I guess because was really busy. Staff of the train were nice.
Is better to go with the long race because the short one is really short and not panoramic at all.
Food quality Ok, I had a lovely soup.
Good accessible place for wheelchair. Good fun :)
K. R.
Fantastic little heritage railway
s. G.
Visited here several times across the years, always enjoyable, nice cafe and a terrific cycle path running alongside the old railway line that goes from Bristol to Bath. Parking available, payable via machine.
R. J.
Poor signage from Bristol Temple Meads made route finding difficult but once found it was a very enjoyable bike ride.
N. P.
Went to AVR today just for a coffee/cake and didn’t expect to go on the steam train but thought we would give it a go. The price is £8.50pp. The whole trip was about 50mins. You don’t go very far before you stop and they swap the engines around and you go back in the opposite direction and they do the same again. I think it’s a bit expensive for that price. I get that this is a heritage site but the carriages are very old and worn, the seats are also very worn down and had holes in them and you could see the springs, they were also stained which made me feel uncomfortable and cringey. The carriages can get quite hot even with the windows open. A bottle of sanitizer is placed in the carriage on the seat so not secured down or anything and didn’t feel it was very clean to touch however you do get your own private carriage with door so not having to share with others during Co-vid times. Would I do it again?, probably not.
T. C.
Nice place to stop for a refuel on the cycle trail. Steam trains go back and forth on the tracks. There's a cafe to get food and drink.
A. H.
Spoilt by having to wait an hour after ordering before getting our fish and chips. Staff did apologise and it was a tasty meal.
C. T.
Yes we enjoyed our visit to Bitton railway. Went with my son and grandson and all of us enjoyed the visit
J. T.
Enjoyed the train ride and seeing santa on the train.i went with my husband daughter, grandson and grandaughter they also enjoyed it.only down side was queuing in cold outside to see santa it would have been good if this could have all been done on train, present giving, photos.would go again and recommend.
S. B.
Very disappointed to find half the track was out of use. Food was OKish. service was ok. When we stopped half way up the line we were alongside what looked like a scrap yard with rusting hulks of engines and carriages. Not a pretty sight to enjoy Sunday lunch by. Would not recommend
P. B.
Came through on a trip between Bristol and bath
N. M.
Fab Christmas experience for all to enjoy
T. B.
A great Sunday experience. Especially for children. A lovely and different way to spend a few hours on a Sunday morning being transported back in time to the good old days. The smells the sounds the sights will stay with you for quite some time... In a good way.
T. A.
Great walking option - trains are good fun
P. C.
Well worth a visit to support them if you like trains. There is a small cafe with homemade cakes, delicious. Polite helpful staff. My second visit.
A. P.
Avon Valley railway is an amazing place to go walking. You can follow the tracks either direction. It's good to cycle too! We go here for our daily exercise and the kids love it!
J. A.
Fantastic day out.
K.
A fantastic place to visit, no matter what age you are.
Brilliant atmosphere and friendly staff
L. O.
Friendly, busy and a lovely experience. We went on a brunch trip (a birthday present for my husband) and there were smiles and chat and tasty food. It is very efficiently done too, congratulations to everyone for giving us such a nice time.
L. J.
Fantastic! We love the Santa Train. We've been coming for the last 4 years. Great vibe, wonderful friendly volunteers. They definitely make the experience a good one! A hard working, enthusiastic team!
S. W.
Food took a while, but was good. We thought the train ride would be longer (but the time was perfect for my toddler, whom just wanted to run around the carriage), but understand the constraints as to why the track is so short etc.
Still enjoyed the ride and the stops, well looked after trains and love the efforts put in to protect and share such history.
A. A.
Awesome place quite peaceful
S. B.
Food was excellent had a lovely day.
L. P. B.
Lovely Nostalgia ... thank god to all the volunteers...
D. A.
Great afternoon tea.
p. n.
Excellent for children. There was a marquee which hosted a magician, face painting and a balloon artist. It was all free but would like donations, it was well worth it. You can ride the train all day if you want. Try it and see, would definately recommend.
R. S.
What a lovely experience. We had a decent range of ages (6 to 91) and it was enjoyed by all. Nice food in the cafe though we were a bit late in the day so not a huge selection but what we had was tasty.
a. m.
Good fun... friendly staff
D. G.
Took the grandchildren to the Lego train ,everyone there so helpful and informative, had a really good day out
M. P.
Good, honest food served by friendly staff. Trains (esp. steam) are a real treat
L. T.
We did the Santa train, it was ok
a. w.
A great morning for our photography and well being group. Free entry, some nice walks, different things to see and always a nice little place for a coffee and cake
W. S.
Fun family experience. Train ride was reasonable price, but cafe was a bit pricey - pot of tea for two, a slice of cake and two ice creams was £11. Gluten free selection of cake. Clean toilet facilities including baby change.
L. B.
Love taking my elderly Nan here, staff are always so helpful and friendly treating my Nan so well. Was able to take our own refreshments on board and we had routes explained to us really well!
Had nice coffee in their cafe as well, Que is sometimes a bit long but worth the wait!
Yes lots of cyclists are many are somewhat intimidating but as i live near railway path near Fishponds I am accustomed to the general attitude that they think they own the path and so many don't seem educated enough to know cycling on pavements is illegal unless your under 12! so to try and reason with them on shared paths is useless! so as long as you stay aware of this visit is made easier!
t. n.
Used to come here as a kid and loved it. Came back again after pandemic ended and it was still as amazing as I remembered.
J. R.
Amazing little cafe here with great staff that get to know people by their names! Attended a 70th birthday celebration here and it was great. The food was amazing and the people too. Would highly recommend any day of the week for breakfast and lunch.
S.
Nice place expensive but really nice place to go for a walk and a coffee got the train station there to see the old trains really is a nice place
P. w.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, nice food. Great spot to pause your walk or cycle for a couple of hours.
H. C.
Me and my Dad like to go on the sherry and mince pie train ride on New Year's day. It is good that they are trying to extend the route. I can walk to the station from my flat along the Bristol to Bath cycle track, which is nice, as long a u watch out for cyclists, as someone else has commented. I generally find them courteous along this routre though, apart from the odd occasion. The cafe has a great gluten-free menu and the volunteers are really friendly. Plenty of space, including on the carriages, with outside seating including a covered area. Seems to be open longer than most cafes in thr Willsbridge area. Good selection of herbal teas in the cafe. Please bring the Dorset strawberries and cream herbal back though - it was lush! Dog-friendly.
J. W.
Great little station. Really interesting and lovely food too!
S. R.
My little ones love riding the steam trains. The food is great and they loved the santa express.
A. W.
Quick stop off on the way home from Dorset. The coffee and cake was delicious and it was lovely seeing the steam trains. A lovely place to visit.
l. f.
Lovely cafe, great for a rest and hot drink to break up a bike ride . Friendly welcoming staff.
a. a.
Nice people, good food, great Pitt stop for my brother and I on our bike ride to Bath. 👍
R. B.
It is great to see how Avon Valley Railway has evolved since I was young in the 80s to the living and bustling place that it now is. It is also nice to see the character of the many volunteers who have helped over the years. Very friendly staff/volunteers and good facilities. Will of course be back :)
A. D.
Absolutely amazing place to visit, staff on the trains and ticket office are amazing and you can even have food on an actual old train, it's brilliant great day out
B. G.
A wonderful location, fantastic staff and a great venue. The engines ran like clockwork 😊
L. R.
Lovely place to visit, lots of railway nostalgia and working trains available for short trips. Good buffet/cafe, with a nice range of food and drink.
B. D.
Run by volunteers. About a 6 mile round trip. We went on a summer school holiday 8th August. Fairly busy but not crowded. Parked on premises. We had Groupon vouchers which were slow to process so allow extra time. Good cafe on site with loads of seating both outside and in vintage carriages.
R. M.
Very nice to visit very friendly and nice train ride
And a 2nd hand shop bitton bargains to visit as they are raising money for their railway
S. K.
Had a lovely afternoon visiting the donkeys and our trip on the train, rather cold waiting for santas grotto but my nephew seemed to enjoy it all
M. M.
An excellent day out. Friendly staff and can go on the train which is exciting and heritage. Nice cafe and gift shop too. Overall an excellent day out!
K. G.
Great for lunch with station cafe serving good food at very reasonable prices and especially thoughtful lunch boxes for little ones. You can eat in a converted railway carriage or outside on the platform in the sun. My grandchildren love this place and you can go for a walk or cycle ride along the permanent way one way or take a steam train journey in the other direction!
j. y.
Good experience my grandchildren loved it.Santa presents were great. My granddaughter loves penguins.Great time.
E. S.
Lovely relaxed setting and lovely cake.
G. J.
A great day out. My little one loved the trains! Lovely cafe with seating inside old railway carriages or outside on the platform next to the trains. They had soya milk and a vegan ice cream too!!
P. S.
Perfect day out with toddler, he loved it. All staff really helped make it a lovely day, and locally sourced refreshments available from the cafe. Recommend
C. T.
We brought our daughters along to the Christmas train ride today. They thought it was magical and went bonkers for the ‘snow’ machines and the West Country Santa. A sterling job by all those involved, especially given the current circumstances.
L. B.
We were first visitors since Lockdown. Felt like royalty!
L. F.
Absolutely amazing staff and experience, will definitely be returning especially to the cafe!
L. H.
We had a Wowcher for this lovely little gem of a heritage railway. Had no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Not a long journey, but its fairly flat and there is a path/cycle path along the side of the track, so you could easily have a grand day with a Rover ticket. There is a very nice cafe at the main station.
Word of caution... You can only use Wowchers on certain days, so check before you go and allow plenty of time to get your tickets. It was very busy the day we went
T. S.
Visited for breakfast at lunchtime and to use the loo. Lots of seating outside. Plenty of parking -free. Lovely.
No Steam trains till 1st May.
J. D.
Great day out for families. The Gertlug have displayed here a few times. Staff are freindly and it's a great space to display Lego.
j. m.
Lovely place for train enthusiasts. Great cafe inside an old railway carriage
M. W.
Cafe open until 3 with current restrictions. The cycle track is busy but fine to walk along. Opposite the railway there is a little park for the kids!
D.
Kids loved the steam train and old fashioned carridges. Really nice short journey up and down the track.
Food was a little expensive, but good size portion. Young and old alike enjoyed it.
*.
The food is excellent, the people running g the kitchen and cafe are doing a great job, but the carriages are filthy discussing place to eat. Eating outside is the only clean option. Such a shame for such a wonderful place.
R.
Brillant day for the brownies truly magical. Santa train lovely. Parking was a bit chaotic but never spoilt the day
S. L.
Great fun on a trip with Santa. Enthusiastic and pleasant staff/volunteers. Parking a little difficult but to be expected with such a popular event. Well worth doing.
M. B.
Went on the santa train. Was nice and warm..the adults got fed mince pies and biscuits, while the children got a visit from want a and a prezzie. Be sure to book as it sells out quick! Missed out for years due to this, finally got to go with the family this year.
T. B.
Took Mum here for lunch - she loves the bubble and squeak that comes with bacon and eggs. And eating it in a railway carriage is added fun. Have been before and really enjoyed the short steam train rides.
S. E.
Visited for the Santa Steam special, but unfortunately weren't all that impressed. We've been to other Avon valley railway events in the past and they're normally quite good, but this one missed the mark. It just felt a bit lacking - barely any time with Santa, not much else at the station. The presents were good quality but that was about it.
A. I.
Lovely scenery but the railway is far too short. This will be so much better if and when the bath extension is approved. Everything is well kept and the staff look after you.
D. H.
Lovely place to visit and Saturday was one of their theme days (2nd world war, Xmas etc).
So as well as the working steam trains, they had lots of costumes, vehicles and music from the time.
Good cafe on site and a natural stop off point on the Bristol to Bath cycle path.
D. B.
Great day out considering it's only 3 miles long. Can mix trains with walking and photo opportunities. Staff very friendly and excellent sausage and bacon rolls from the cafe.
J. H.
Always stop here while doing my annual cycle path trip. Also a great heritage railway. Couldn't recommend more for both aspects
J. R.
Rail enthusiasts this is a fun site! The track is not all that long, but we arrived in a day when they were running steam. Got a peek at the engine controls and feel the heat coming off the coals. The cars are in good shape, though perhaps not the oldest I've been on mostly dating from the 1960s. I recommend also taking a stroll along the bike path that parallels the line. The bike path takes you along the rail yard and some of the old rusty machining equipment and a grand stone bridge. Had a bite at the cafe and was quite happy with the quality and size of the portions and don't panic if the food takes a few trains to arrive as the ticket is good for a full day of riding.
R. G.
Very enjoyable walk up the bike path, had a cold drink and an ice cream with the kids, then played at the park next door. Lovely, old fashioned day out.
P. H.
Lovely staff and great fun for kids. My boy loved it!
D. 7.
Lovely place to visit , interesting people and great food , cool 😎 trains.
J. C.
Lovely small steam heritage railway. Such friendly staff and friendly staff, interesting programme of events including the fabulous murder mysteries by After Dark Murder Company xx
J. C.
We took our daughter and grandchildren on the Santa Express and had a lovely time. As it was very open and Santa was walking around, our two year old wasn't afraid of him and very much enjoyed his present.
M. M.
Nice little hobby railway. They make the most of the relatively short length of track with either steam and diesel locomotives pulling carriages most weekends in the summer. Is on the Bristol to Bath cycleway so there are loads of cyclists that stop for refreshments. Plenty of tables both in and out to enjoy your cuppa and cake
M. P.
We went for a santa special ride on boxing day, a little steam train arrived with about four or five carriages and off we went. Lovely views of surrounding countryside, but would have liked a longer journey. ps if you find this review helpful, please give it a 👍
C. F.
Lovely little train ride for the kids on new year's Day. Lovely to do something different with them. Staff were lovely and friendly. It's a lovely place
G. W.
Having make my booking, which was for my sister in laws 70th Birthday, I was extremely please when we arrived to see that the seating arranger knew it was her Birthday and greeted her so.
A special sigh was also above our table.
A Birthday card, from 'ALL AT AVON VALLEY RAILWAY' soon followed and them a very nice bouquet of flowers. This was only the start of the day and already they had already surpassed my expectations.
A great train trip with a sumptuous dinner followed.
I can only give my thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this a 5 star day out.
Highly recommended.
K. B.
Good place for young children
A. R.
Lovely little Railway station, had a fantastic day at the fire and water day, and seeing the tugs was brilliant. The food at the station cafe was great. The staff were very friendly, will definitely be returning.
D. B.
Been here a few times now! Magical first train journeys for little ones and even chances to have lunch on one! Not loads to do there, but a great day out! Definitely going here again!
S. F.
Lovely staff, great lunch
P. M.
Went on the Santa Steam Train Special this afternoon, the team at Bitton are great and deserve praise for making the visit a great experience. On arrival into the car park we were greeted with a big smile and guided into empty spaces. This theme continued throughout the visit, a great cafe onsite with seating in a converted railway carriage.
Santa visited us in the carriages during the steam train ride and we had a short stop to take further photos part way through the trip. Would definitely recommend.
A. N.
Great to take the little ones for a day/ half day.
Take your bikes and after take a ride along the path towards Bath and you'll find a few nice watering holes that shuffle up a nice bit of grub too.
J. R.
It's great fun for the kids only problem we had was the trains weren't actually running on the day we visited. They have a little park there and the cafe was very nice.
D. B. P.
A great cycle ride from Bath. Lovely tea and cakes. Steam trains going up and down the old rail track. A very English summer scene. This is a must do thing. Many happy memories have been made with my kids and I cycling to this place and enjoying a big slice of cake and coffee.
Toilets clean.
Bicycle pump available.
A few hundred metres away there is a cycle shop for emergency repairs.
d. g.
Nice pub / restaraunt over two floors, both roomy tho the garden is small and compact.
M. H.
Loads of fun especially if you visit with children. 3 stations and the engines swap ends for about 5-10 minutes at each end so lots of opportunities to see steam! All day tickets are reasonable and discounted tickets are available for locals with a BANES Discovery card, also there are often discounts on Groupon.
Saltford station end of the track is about a 15 minute flat tarmac'd walk from the excellent Bird in Hand Pub (good food and pints and a beer garden). Not much near the other end of the track though.
The only negative I can think of is the cafe at Bitton Station could be a lot better - the coffee is too watery. The shop at Bitton is excellent for all train related merchandise.
L. H.
An ok experience. I took my 2 year old for what I thought would be a good hour on the train. Spent a good 30 minutes sat stationary. Given the price I would have been better off getting a train from my local station to temple meads and back.
H. V.
Stood waiting for a train to Bristol temple meads, stood waiting for over 2 hours. Ended up having to get an Uber.
Limited timetable information and too many happy people eating ice cream on benches. While the variety of food was acceptable, there was no Starbucks, or Costa.
Plenty of room for bikes and plenty of seating when you're waiting for your train to Bristol Temple Meads, with decent spacing between tables #CovidCompliant
A.
The station is beautiful and the experience was exciting going on the old steam train with my family, I would give five stars,
Except for 2 things..
1- Because of the cash flow issue, the train could only go about a mile up the track and back, this was due to C-19, as their donations had severly reduced and they did not raise enough money to ensure a longer journey of which they usually do.... My suggestion is that the local authority could help maintain and advertise this railway, it would bring so many more visitors to the area and increase the cash flow.. Which would allow us to enjoy the fullness of the services provided here.
2- My suggestion is that the railway inform their guests that the journey will be shortened due to funding...as for me.. This was an anticlimax as when we started our journey, it was already finished and was very dissapointing.
Apart from that, I would definitely go again, when they secure more funding, however the shortened journey due to funding is great for Kids!!
R. B.
Friendly, clean with refreshments if needed, and toilets
Do check to see if private parties have the day there,as you won't be able to go on the train
C. B.
Great concept and our little one loved the Santa steam ride, a shame no one on the railway new about the adult tipple though so we didn't get that which we paid for but overall a very pleasant trip.
D. M.
Pretty and convenient place for walkers and cyclists with a well used and lovely cycle path running five miles to Bath Eastwards and nine miles to Bristol to the West. The old railway station itself is a delightful step into the past with regular little steam train rides, mainly up the track towards Bath. There is also a small cafe type restaurant with plenty of outside seating - indoor seating is in the form of a railway dining car that abuts the restaurant.
T. B.
Railways need support. Also santa special
L. B.
It's nice to have avon valley raialway,i have known it since i was a young girl.
I used to take my daughter on the santa special and she always got good presents from father Christmas.
The menu seems to have changed since i last whent there late lsst year.the other week i went ,there was not much choice of food and some items looked dear.
I will always support the railway. Well worth a visit.
R. O.
Can't fault this, you can ride a steam train, get a snack or meal in the shop, cafe or restaurant or just sit and watch everything. Accessible via the cycle path or nearby road. Great place to spend a few hours, thoroughly recommended.
M. G.
A great classic heritage railway line. 6 miles round trip. It has both steam and diesel historic locomotives, see their website for timetables.
A nice buffet on site, and runs alongside bicycle route to Bath. Connects to Avon canal system at one station.
Great plans to expand renewing line all the way to Bath, but obviously they need to raise money to do so.
J. W.
Lovely place to come for a cup of tea if you’re cycling
c. w.
Safe place to break your walk or cycle between Bristol and Bath. Good takeaway drinks and snacks available. Toilets open.
J. B.
Can't wait to come back. Great place to cycle on weekend! Also got a bicycle pump.
P. A.
Really nice place on a sunny afternoon to stop and grab an ice cream! Watch the trains and just relax. Lovely walks along the Bristol to bath cycle path.
C. G.
Nice quiet cup of coffee at Avon valley railway cafe. Me and family always stop here when cycling along the Bristol to bath cycle track. Recommended
T. S.
Visited the Santa steam train. Really good value. In the train much longer than I thought and very well organized.
P. C.
Kids loved it definitely need good weather for this though
m. j.
Fantastic little line .
Nice staff
S. G. 7.
Stopped here on a cycle ride from Bristol Temple Meads to Bath. Great place to visit if you're into rail especially if you're a fan of steam locomotives.
O. S.
After an agonising bike trek on a steadily gentle incline, a cup of tea is a welcome sight at the café.
A. M.
Love this place. Friendly staff and the steam railway is a great experience in lovely surroundings. We had our wedding reception on a train here in November. A day to remember.
K. R.
This place could do with a bit love, it's all a bit run down. Nice staff though, and awesome old trains. We love to visit for events, our kids love it.
J. V.
Fantastic Christmas train experience and felt covid safe. Really Really friendly and helpful staff throughout. We will definitely be back next year
r. b.
Nice friendly run little train station with some great steam engines! Like stepping back in time, but lots of fun and well worth a look, perfect little day trip out for the family.
a. b.
Had lovely meal with very good and friendly service. The staff do this on a voluntary basis and did a very good job.
K. P.
Get what you pay for. Unique setting up staff not very friendly or approachable. Food is very basic and unhealthy, not exciting. Not great for people with food intolerances. Lots of kids and Grandparents.
M. L.
Great stop off for tea and refreshments
M. K.
A brilliant stop on the Bristol to Bath cycle track. Plenty of drinks and snacks available as well as toilets and a small shop selling train related bits. There are regular trips on steam trains up and down the small section if track. Worth stopping, especially if you are out for a ride.
B. K.
Great attraction but check when the trains run online
P. M.
Good place to stop while cycling between Bristol and Bath and watch the steam trains. Food is very good at the station. Enjoyed the 1940 themed weekend and listening to the Glen Miller band.
m. s.
Lovely day out made really enjoyable by the enthusiasm of the volunteers. Great for all ages. Had a lovely experience and we will return.
A. K.
Fantastic fun for the family. Food on site, right next to the platform. Little gift shop for souvenirs too. Trains ran frequently when we visited on a Sunday with friendly helpful staff too. Definitely recommend 😊

This was my 25th year in a row on the train and under the circumstances of covid they have done a marvellous job, seeing Santa in his Grotto was not as exciting as on the train was the decision of my 2 but better than nothing!

Lovely place for a family day out. Put your phones away and have some proper fun with steam trains, cycling, lashings of ginger beer and a slice of Victoria Sponge! Perfect
J. R.
Spent a lovely afternoon here. Wouldn't have minded travelling a bit further but really enjoyed our tea and scones. The service and staff were excellent!
A. H.
Great, would be better if the allowed you to board and alight at either end rather than having to start in the middle, if you try and board at either of the end stations, you will not be able to buy a ticket. I think they lose out there, it would be especially good if you could bring a bike onto the trains.
a.
It is a lovely place to go if you want to have a nice little walk with the family or it can be a rest stop on a cycle ride but either way tge staff and food are lovely.
S. R.
Fabulous couple of hours. Sunday lunch was amazing.
M. O.
Lovely cafe with hot food, great cycle path safe for kids, busy but good distancing.
J. E.
Took the family to the Teddy Bears Picnic event today. Throughly enjoyed by us all. Great food on offer and helpful pleasant staff
A. j.
Great family fun, good prices to get in and in the shop!

Great to find the cafe open for takeaways today. Enjoyed our coffees in the sunshine.

Beer fests here are the best. Every time I cycle past there seems to be an event happening. A great hub for the cycle path and a must for the rail enthusiast.
K. B.
Nice little place, needs a longer track!
C. M.
Friendly staff, good food, coffee was ok, nice seating, social distancing being adhered to, plenty of parking
P. S.
Good place to stop for coffee and cake on a bike ride, fairly low prices. Also good for a day out, riding on the train through some nice countryside in the Avon Valley.
J. W.
Nice place to take the kids. The cycle path to Bath is next to the railway and also a park. The cafe is affordable and the train is pretty cool.
A. B.
As steam railways go, this is a small one at 3 miles of track. Now, don't get me wrong, I love steam railways but this one suffers because you have to join it in the middle with the result being that there is a lot of waiting for the engine to decouple and recouple at the ends of the track and not enough uninterrupted travel.
D. A.
Excellent place, good food, right on the cycle track so you can walk into Bath. Local to me so visit a lot. They put on brilliant days for special rides and functions.
A. G.
Great way to get a quick cuppa and a bal. Food is fine and prices are good. Lovely set up and location and friendly staff
M. B.
Fantastic Christmas experience, good value for money and the kids loved it. With a present for each child with their name on and a personal visit from Santa the magic of Christmas is truly alive aboard this train.
E. H.
Lovely little cafe, with plenty of old trains, bike racks and - most importantly - loos that are open during lockdown.
s. s. s.
The trains are great to take picture with and there is a playground for the children to play
B. E.
A preserved railway with a good selection of steam and a few diesel locomotives. The cafe is delightful and can get very busy. Coffee is not the best, but there are plenty of alternatives!
D. B.
Went here after a cycle ride along to Bath. Very friendly and not too expensive. Nice to walk along the path too. Lots of people out on a nice day.
E. W.
Great time traveling on the old steam train and a lot of interesting old carriages sided up. You can have dinner in a old carriage or take tea and cakes on the platform. Lovely restored old station.
S. B.
Stopped off to use cafe. Very nice sat on train cabin to have tea and cake

Dining in coaches both stationary and moving.Any Heritage Railway is Brilliant.

Small branch line station built by the old Midland Railway Company.
Access to the building is via the station approach road built for Horse drawn carriages. Parking is available along this road at right angles to the road itself. There is a large turning area outside the station building which can accommodate mini bus's turning but nothing much larger.
This is strictly one road in and the same road out again.
Small but well stocked sovineer shop attached to the Booking office, trains run most days iether in steam or deisel.
Good size cafe charging reasonable prices with outdoor seating for fine weather.
Behind the café you will see a large collection of rolling stock in various states of repair, this area is not open to the public.
Good toilet facilities in the station building and the train ride is short but interesting, great views.
S. “.
Looked nice as we had to cycle passed the station - didnt use the cafe.
V. W.
Great little railway. About 2 or 3 miles of track with good views across countryside. Steam and diesel engines. Cafe, parking and accessible by bicycle.
J. E.
It was quite busy today but very pleasant and the ploughman's lunch was good.
M. z.
Such an amazing place,
J. P.
I haven't had a ride on the trains yet, but hoping to tomorrow, lovely place, even just for a coffee and or snack, very busy, with a cycle track nearby.
M. R.
Lovely place to visit & have a cup of tea
P. C.
I love this place its like stepping back in time, but a word of warning school holidays it gets very busy, can't get a space in the car park
S. M.
It's ok. It's a shame they are not particularly bike friendly as you are not allowed to bring your bikes up next to the cafe to keep an eye on them. Coffee was ok but not exceptional.

A great place for cycling and walking ..very nice cafe and facilities at Bitton ..plus of course the trains that you can actually ride on ..Steam engines and diesel locos from a bygone era lovingly restored.Walk from Bitton to Warmley in about 45 minutes and a rest stop and very nice cafe await you there a very pleasant walk or ride ..From Bitton you can go all the way to Bath ..
C. W.
Really good value for money and a great day out for the family. Trains not the best kept but reflected in the admission price. Still deservedly a 5 star.
R. S.
My boys love this place. Even when there isn't a big event on they are sometimes moving the steam trains around. You can have lunch in some old carriages.
I.
Great place very clean , loads of parking nice cafe and chop amazing for younger children
G. L.
Great place to learn about how a heritage railway runs and great food served in Station Cafe/Resturant. Steam ride though not the longest but a pleasurable experience.
J. S.
If you like old trains or old men fixing trains or even old people working on trains then this is the place for you, They have all 3 here, plus you can eat food here, and eat it on an old train, bye gum some days you can even ride on an old train. Making you own train noises will enhance your experience but not essential. Would go again
R. L.
Beautiful site, the real steam trains running were a delight for my little boy. The staff do helpful.
M. M.
Great cafe for a brunch. It's very exciting if you're into trains. I was visiting for a local sporting event but it's free to wander the platforms.
K. C.
Good place to pass through and has a great cafe
a. n.
We would like to thank the staff and customers when we left a purse and a phone behind. They were closed when we went to collect it but we still got it back.
J. M.
A lovely stop off on the Bristol Bath cycle path. Popular with families to ride on the choo choos and has a rather lovely cafe with great menu
J. K.
Lovely line, nice staff, well worth a visit.
l. R.
Great for a lockdown walk, toilets are open and the cafe is doing take outs. Plenty of sanitizer to use.
T. H.
Great place to meet, ride the trains and fund restoration work , shop and cafe, use cycle tracks to Bristol and bath and beyond
D. P.
Steam train ride with Santa! Great day out with the family and each child got a quality Christmas present from Santa himself. Lovely staff and very helpful.
J. S.
The trains weren't running but there are lovely walks beside the track with glorious views. Will return when life returns to normal.
L. M.
Been visiting this place for 15 years as am local. Always mega interesting and chilled out.
S. S.
Ice cream was great and price was good. Disappointing that it was shutting at 4pm on the hottest day of the year so far and lots of people were out and about in the ccycle path.
r. f.
Brilliant, friendly staff, made the little one happy! Recommended
G. E.
Great day, thanks to all the team for organising.
W. L.
Geared for children, particularly at weekends. Good cafe, but inside is too narrow for children and less able individuals. Train rides are good but short.
D. H.
Today we were on the train for Father's Day Special (meal included)
L. J.
We all had a great time on the Santa train, All the staff were really friendly. Santa was great, present lovely. Fab afternoon out.
M. C.
I've just noticed on Google that this place describes itself as a "rail museum". Is it? Seems like a cafe to me. And not a great one at that. A shame, they could do so much more with it.
G.
Point place run by volunteers food and coffee is reasonable though perhaps not the best barista experience as it's bean to cup and they don't do soya milk but I like the place it's a great destination for a bicycle ride from Bath being just about the right distance to stop for a cup of coffee and a cake it's generally open reasonably early in the morning until about 4:30 weekdays 5:30 on the weekend
R. S.
Nice place to sit especially in the sun. They do the best cheesy chips and are all friendly. Steam engines go but sometimes only diesel ones
r. j.
An enjoyable family day out . Especially if you like heritage railway s. Has both desiel and steam trains there are 2 journeys you can make from the main station.
M. J. S.
Steam trains and a period station whats not to like
c. g.
Nice walk. Path is great for running or cycling with some lovely views. Staff at the railway were very friendly.
f. u.
A trip out for all the family, a train ride, a walk or ride down the cycle path or a choice of food served in an old Railway Carriage at the cafe what could be better. And there's no entrance fee!!
C. D.
Really lovely area, lovely walks close by, helpful staff and a good little cafe
C.
Amazing experience and lovely food in the cafe! Definitely recommend
p.
Great place for steam trains, good food, playground opposite to car park
K. B.
Great food served out of an old train carriage, fantastic steam train rides and a little park for children other side of cycle track.
S. T.
Great to see the railway and the bike path working well together. Got a lovely mince pie free on the Christmas special!
D. C.
Today was a great recreation of the L.S.W.R. in wartime, with remembrance day ceremony, intervals, created with the help of the Beatty well tank and a terroir tank engine , tremendous effort, together with the Hunslet austerity, well done to everybody involved. Loved it.
P. B.
Brilliant setting and something for everyone, bring your bikes along to go on the cycle path to Bath or Bristol after you have finished your visit.
T. S.
Nice café, used this as the starting point for the Bath & Bristol Railway Path. Full loop is 30 miles, well worth doing.
S. G.
