Reviews of Underfall Yard Visitor Centre
Great place to visit. Friendly staff always prepared to explain everything.
Great place to go to grasp a basic knowledge of river engineering in Bristol. I was so thankful to have a knowledgeable volunteer who walked me through this.
The centre is free but worth to donate.
This building is a little gem housing some fantastic hydro powered engines and a very detailed large scale map of The Floating Harbour. It is a credit to those who give their time to preserve our local history.
A real gem. Can't believe I've lived in Bristol for almost 20 years and never found it before!! And free...and cafe lovely. Great views over the river whilst eating.
Nice ciffee and cakes from Pickle. Breakfast and lunches too but not sampled on this occasion as just on bike ride. Historical, dockside info 'play' area for the kids. Friendly and willing staff.
Interesting place to visit. This place played a key role in the Bristol docks running.Original buildings and pump machinery.Free to enter and also has a small cafe. Great to visit whilst walking around the harbour.
Great hidden little gem, if in Bristol it's definitely worth checking out, offers of food and drinks (and some nice IPAs) along with a great outside seating area make it a very enjoyable place to stop and take a look at some boats
A nice place to visit... good little restaurant with great tea and cake. Worth the visit.
If you want to visit, why not jump on a ferry and head up to Nova Scotia....then a quick walk around the corner to Underfall.
Excellent place to learn some really interesting things about Bristol and its floating habour, and its wonderful, mind blowing hydraulic power system that effectively ran the once thriving Bristol docks...Before the creation of the floating harbour, the docks were tidal, and so when the tide went out the ships would settle on the river bed...and everything that was not tied down and safely stored moved...hence the expression "ship shape and Bristol fashion"
Interesting exhibits re local area and engineering. Free to enter. Cafe has the best view of the docks you are gonna get, lovely place to sit outside. Plenty of parking nearby, some free, at Cumberland Basin.
Lovely place to visit for an hour. The kids always love learning about the history of Bristol harbour and there's lots of interactive exhibits for them to enjoy. There's really nice food and drink available too, courtesy of Pickle. And the views of the water from the outdoor seating area are hard to beat.
Very interesting place. Lovely food and drinks provided by hardworking friendly staff.
Great place to chill with a coffee & slice of cake to watch the world go by. Always lovely staff too, matter how busy it gets they always manage to smile
Good for a coffee and entertains the kids for a bit. And free to enter!
Lovely area of Bristol. Lovely little cafe to stay out of the rain
Really cool place I have lived in Bristol for years and would highly recommend a visit while walking around the water front.
Fascinating small museum by the working boatyard. Great café, with views along the floating harbour. Friendly volunteer guides.
Great place for a family tea or coffee overlooking the harbour while being educated how the docks used to work. There is a also a selection of very tasty savoury snacks and cakes.
Really lovely food and a beautiful setting. It was actually chucking it down with rain when we visited but stayed nice and dry under the outside canopy while still taking in the views of the harbour.
Bristol Docks is always an interesting place to visit.
I love this place. But then I love large pieces of machinery. Also coffee and great sandwiches. The history is really interesting. Not a massive place, short visit and a drink when strolling round the harbour side. Well worth dropping in if you are already at the Great Britain.
Great little museum. Lots to see here for both adults and kids.
Children will love using magnets to open the model lock gates and pressing buttons to light up parts of the harbour on the aerial view.
Check what time the pumps operate. The staff that explain their purpose and how they work are very knowledgeable.
Well worth doing in here on a walk round the harbour.
Quiet Riverside pints, snacks and coffee at a historic location. Watching the boatbuilders at work was a bonus. Very nice spot to while away an afternoon.
Surprisingly informative little museum that gives some of the details of how Bristol's floating harbour works and how it came to it's current state. The staff were very informative and friendly. There are a handful of interactive exhibits explaining how some of the features of the harbour work, which are great for both children and bigger children. Food and drink provided by local business Pickle, with outdoor seating overlooking the water. Worth a visit if you're exploring the serene end of Bristol harbour.
Cafe never has coffee machine on when I go.
Great place for young and old alike. So much to see. Very helpful staff. Food scrumptious. Overall a very delightful visit.
Great place for a wander around where you can still see traditional skills in action. The visitors centre and cafe is good with some great activities for kids young and old. Definitely somewhere where you will learn something about the history of the area. The engine runs at various times so check it out.
Lovely old boaty corner of historic Bristol docklands. Splendid cafe serving coffee beer and refreshments, with covered seating area. Walk on towards Wapping Warf and amble past cafes and eateries now open. Why not gaze at the boats and small ships, some with masts or maybe visit Brunel's Great Britain.
Why not take the ferry across to the North Bank and explore there?
The lovely brother working at the Underfall cafe are so brilliant. Always cheerful and so acommodating. It's a treat to visit. Lovely spot and what a view! Like being on holiday
Nice, historical pit-stop on your walk round the harbour. A good museum, but a guided tour is highly recommended. I'm not a history or engineering buff, but what these pumps do/did is crazy impressive!
We we're lucky enough to see the pumps working. Had a wonderful couple of hours here. Steve was excellent in giving his time and showing us all the workings (helped by young Felix). Please enjoy an afternoon here well worth a visit especially if history and engineering are your thing.
Out son had sailing from here with cubs so we thought we would all go down as a family and watch. Not been to Pickle before but have walked by before and thought it always looked nice. It did not disappoint, great food and friendly staff and well as having interesting interactive things for the children to do. We will be going back again very soon.
This is one of my favourite places to visit in Bristol. The staff and volunteers are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The cafe is good value with a great range of food and drinks.
We have just visited again during Harbour Fest and it is much more low key at this end of the harbour. A great place to sit with a coffee/cider (or whatever floats your boat) and watch the comings and goings of the harbour.
We also like to come here in the colder months and we all enjoy a walk around the harbour with a stop in Underfall yard for a coffee and the kids like to use the interactive exhibits.
In a nutshell, a great place to visit to get a better understanding of the importance Underfall yard played in the harbour, or even just for a snack and a drink.
Lovely stop on a harbor walk. Nice atmosphere and great to see a working boat yard in action. There is a working pump Room that is run for the public. There are also some cool interactive displays that get kids understanding and operating a system of locks and sluices, and an interactive aerial map table of the city river and waterways; enough to insert kids for a while. There is a pickle cafe for drinks and food, an ice cream counter, and outside seating with a great view of the harbour. There are also public loos.
Amazing setting at the end of the harbour, perfect for watching boats, paddle boarders and dragon boat racing. Basic picnic bench style seating outside. The brunch/breakfast sandwiches are served in baskets, nothing fancy, but everything you could want in a sandwich. Tried the bacon, avocado, tomato and lemon mayo - delicious. Interesting exhibits relating to history of harbour indoors, including interactive stuff that provided ample entertainment for my two-year-old.
A lovely position, especially when the weather is dry.
Interesting to understand the harbour and it's workings. worthwhile family activities whilst on our walk.
Great coffee, fantastic savoury lunch snacks (meat & veggie). Great view. Fun for all ages!
Great place for a coffee and better than normal light lunch. Quality staff. Quirky place to sit and eat, in the old pump house. Basic seating and tables, inside , picnic table outside for sunny days. Well worth a visit.
One of Bristol's less advertised gems. A traditional shop maintenance yard that builds bespoke small boats, and repairs and maintains some of the larger ones. There's a visitor centre with excellent interactive displays on how the floating harbour was built and maintained.
Also has a bar and cage which is a lovely place to hang out.
Fantastic interactive aerial map of the whole of Bristol Docks. Fascinating to watch people working on ships and boats in the yard and it seems like a genuinely great place to take kids for a short visit while walking around the docks.
A piece of little known history with both the pumping station and the working traditional boat yard. Also a great food and coffee stop for anybody circumnavigating the Docks on foot or bike. Pickles has a great outside space with which gives a different perspective of the harbour.
Great place to spend a couple of house, interactive exhibits for the kids, nice cafe, really friendly staff and volunteers. We got there using the ferry from SS Great Britain, just a few minutes travel.
Great little place on the harbourside. Good choice of drinks and food. Love the B.R.A.T on sourdough.
Lovely, nice and cosy...perfecto place for a coffe or a sándwich in Its "dockyard ambient". Love it!!!
Bristol’s best kept FREE and Uber friendly secret!! Not only highly educational of Bristol’s floating harbour (!) which our 4 yr old and her friends always have fun with the interactive displays. But the volunteers are super knowledge and warmly welcome anyone who passes. Of course, the perfect distraction whilst waiting for the Bristol Ferry too. And did I mention the funky little cafe??
Interesting place, a lot of history about the development of Bristol docks over the years. Some guided tours. On certain days they start the old engines that used to provide pressurised water to cranes, slices etc
Superb little museum which held you understand the amazing Bristol harbour and all its hydraulic genius starting from Brunels dreams. Very interactive. Then there is a wonderful light up plan in full colour of the whole harbour that you can walk around, plan your stroll or understand how cleverly the whole area was constructed.
Finally there is a super cafe that does good coffee, drinks and hot and cold snacks at standard prices served to you as you sit under umbrellas watching the whole maritime leisure and commercial industry glide by or be lovingly restored in the dry dock/slipway next door. . In good weather it's one of Bristols little gems.
A truly authentic Bristol experience! A must if you are visiting!
I always take visiting friends here to show them an integral part of Bristol's history. The volunteers and staff are so knowledgeable, approachable and passionate, and the exhibits are fun and very interactive.
Lovely little museum, really interesting look at the docks and how it works. The staff are really knowledgeable. Pickle cafe does brilliant breakfast sandwiches both meat and veggie.
Really good sandwiches and a nice place to sit in the sun whilst watching the boats. Small point, I would have liked to have been told that crisps are served with the sandwiches rather than letting me buy two bags of unneeded crisps.
Site of boat building in the floating harbour for over 200 years. Many skills based in the workshops can be seen exercised on the boats on the slipways and on the grounds. Interesting projects develop over several weeks, so worth regular visits.
Worth visiting after rainstorms when the Underfall sluices the excess water into the river.
Interesting Museum showcasing the industrial heritage of the city of Bristol, and how it expanded, due to changes made to the flow of the river, and improvements to the docks. Interactive models illustrate the working of locks, and clearing of silt from the floating harbour area.
Lovely place. Great staff.
Part of the historic Bristol Docks this is well worth a visit if you are at all interested in industrial architecture or living history. Just a short walk along from Brunel's SS Great Britain there are a number of unique features including the pumping station and winch for hauling boats out of the water for repairs. There is a small but well presented display about the history of the yard and an excellent cafe. There are several very good pubs nearby too, especially the Nova Scotia. After lunch, why not walk along to the modern swing bridge - an amazing piece of architecture in itself - and see if you can find Brunel's "other" Bridge.
Very interesting, especially the model showing how the dock locks and other features worked. The old pumps were great too with their wound rotor, slipping induction motors.
Just a fantastic place to visit! Traditional boat building, boat blacksmiths, other crafts and traditional skills etc together with the Accumulator engine house museum and cafe. Great place for a couple of hours!
Interesting museum at the historic underfall yard, with an interactive exhibition on the elaborate system of weirs, pumps & sluices which maintains the water level in Bristol's floating harbour. Pump demonstrations, guided tours & waterside cafe.
Very interesting, volunteer Richard gave us a brilliant tour of the pump house, thoroughly recommended.
Wonderful older gentlemen in boiler suits volunteering to tell you the nuts and bolts about stuff they love. The last of their kind. My thanks go to them for a wonderful time observing machinery over 100 years old still operating for display instead of letting it die and gone forever. They have the last weight accumulator that still operates to exert hydrologic (water) pressure that used to operate cranes and gates for the harbour.
Really enthusiastic staff who are proud of Bristol's maritime history. There were also lots of interactive displays which were great at educating adults and children alike.
Great location at the end of the harbourside with views over the river. Great value breakfasts, cakes and snacks. Highly recommend.
Really interesting spot with models showing how water levels are maintained in the harbour, a working repair yard and a cafe with an outside seating area. A nice place to stop on a walk around the harbour.
Lovely cake and iced latte
Great cakes, kind and helpful service, great for children too with the informative games, kept them busy while we enjoyed our cake and drink in peace! 😁😁😁
Always a good experience at Underfall Yard, just popped in for a couple of pencils right towards the end of the day but greeted with a smile and some warm banter. A great little venue with great staff/volunteers.
Interesting place with a good cafe.
Amazing working boat yard on the harbour. Interesting museum and you must visit Pickle Cafe. Sit outside looking up the floating harbour with your coffee and very good food.
The Underfall Boat Yard is well worth a visit - a traditional working boatyard, it's filled with wood and half-built classic boats. I was lucky enough to experience a pop-up feast at the yard which was beautiful - the views over the twinkling river in the evening made it feel very special.
Really sweet mini "museum" with some cool interactive elements ideal for kids. Wish the seating in the cafe area was a bit more child friendly though.
Small but informative. You will get more from visiting here if you chat with the volunteer engineers, they are very enthusiastic about the kit they look after & very happy to be asked questions about it.
A fascinating walk round the inner harbour in Bristol. Numerous things to look at and the Underfall yard is well recreated. Good artisan outlets for food and drink.
Simple, fast and punchy. Easy to understand, for kids and adults alike. A great explanation of the principles behind Bristol civil and mechanical engineering history
Nice place to stop for coffee when walking with Bessie.
Fascinating displays and great breakfast baps, with lovely views of the waterside.
Great place to take the kids and it's all free!
Truly a fascinating part of the Bristolian harbourside culture, the Underfall Yard is actually a fully working shipyard that specialises in small pleasure boats. The yard is open to the public and provides an interesting insight to the modern shipbuilding and maintenance industries. Worth passing through if you are in the area, but not necessarily a major attraction.
Step back in time, really brings the old harbour experience into clear relief. Amazing what has been done.
Lovely free exhibition with some interactive bits that explain various related concepts about managing the river and using it for energy and the history around it.
Great location and views of the Harbourside..great coffee and food
Went to a pop up meal here provided by Mi Casa, it's an interesting place to visit to see the boats getting built, and although not it's main purpose it served very well for a place to have an unusual evening meal.
A really interesting museum. The volunteer guide was very knowledgeable and interesting to talk to. The cafe is well worth a visit too.
We went to underfall yard at the weekend to have coffee and cake in the new cafe pickle at underfall yard, the cafe can be found at the end of bristol docks, with gluten-free options as my partner is gluten free, the cafe is part of the new Museum about underfall yard, the food is really good on our last visit we had bacon sandwiches which were really nice, all served by Bright Young people, the outside area is on the edge of the docks and sits low to the Water's Edge this gives a great view of the docks, not the best for children for safety reasons and not the cheapest, but it is very good and one for a bacon butty connoisseurs.
Great views across the water, lovely atmosphere and fab food
Very interesting information on how the sluice gates for Bristol Harbour operate, also good coffee and great bacon rolls
Nice place to visit and get the feel for boats being constructed and repaired. Its a must on your walks around Bristol harbourside to enjoy the famous local maritime history.
Really interesting exhibits that show you the engineering magic that were used to manage the floating harbour.
Great little cafe too.
Great activity area for kids and adults showing the history of docks and what looked like a good cafe - we got there too late😢
A hidden gem worth a visit and the staff are so knowledgeable great exhibits and a lovely place to have a coffee and watch life on the river .
This is a nice place for a coffee/lunch stop. The interactive things are very pedagogic to learn how river maintenance works!
Great coffee and delicious sandwiches, reasonably priced. Interesting little museum as well, would definitely reccommend.
Absolutely fascinating and dispite being Bristol born and bred I never knew it was there. Ok I am a geeky engineer but if you are too pay it a visit.
Super helpful volunteers, fascinating Bristol history plus café = ideal stop off point on a walk around the harbour
Nice little cafe there for a quick snack. All seating outside due to vivid.

Great historical place, well informed volunteer guides and the cafe serves lovely coffee and home made cakes.

Interesting corner of Bristol that is a must if visiting.. Enjoy a nice coffee and a bite to eat before exploring this old boatyard....
One of the more intriguing locations around Bristol Old Harbour, check it out when walking about!
nice boats, always smells amazing for some reason, sometimes closed which is mildly inconvenient
This is our maritime history that continues in full view of those who visit.
Interesting history and some engaging exhibits for kids, my highlight was the large aerial photograph of the floating harbour.
I am there daily and know the staff. I love to see their work on marine items
Great to be able to see the equipment that for around 150 years powered the lock gates and more around Bristol's docks.
Great museum, lovely interactive displays and fabulous tea and cakes.
Excellent. Just missed seeing the pump engine working but otherwise a great place to sit and watch the world go by.
