Reviews of Balkerne Gate
I. S.
Barkerne Gate - the largest Roman gateway in Britain.
The Romans built the monumental arch here in AD 49 to mark the foundation of Roman in Colchester.
In AD 60 Boudica and the followers burnt Colchester to the ground. Following the disaster, the Romans enclosed the the town with the stone wall to protect it from further attacks. The monumental arch was incorporated into the new west gate, which gave access to the main road to London.
Around 200 years later, the town defences were straightened against the threat of Saxon raids.
During the Middle ages, the wall gradually ceased to be used for defence, although it was repaired at various times.
After the seige of Colchester in 1648, sections of the wall were pulled down and others were built over. A house, now the "Hall in the wall" pub, was built on the top of the remains of the Balkerne Gate.
The origin of the name Balkerne or why it was used for this Gate is unknown.

Not much left of a Roman gateway that played such an important
part/role of this Countries history, it still looks well kept even though only ruins remain & is next to a lovely looking pub very aptly named hole in the wall.

A fascinating survival of Roman Colchester, and as in the photo, close to the Victorian Jumbo Water tower and the modern Mercury Theatre. Three ages of Colchester in one.

A not particularly well preserved gate in the Roman Wall of the city. Worth a visit if in the area, but not for a specific trip. The bonus is the pub built on part of the original gate.

Beautiful. Rare gate ting and a proper old wall. Foxes like it too apparently plus you'll see the odd raven there.

When in Colchester be sure to visit the Roman, "Balkerne Gate". Here you can visit, touch and walk through the largest surviving gateway from Roman Britain.

Large Roman gateway, amazing ruins

I had a Flat White coffee at the Mercury theatre's cafe recently. Was it a coffee to remember you ask..?? Yes it sure was. About the weakest Flat White coffee I have ever tasted, MscvD's cfee being ten times better. A Flat White should be made with a double Espresso, this coffee had barely one Espresso mixed in far to much milk with not the recommended froth topping. Will I return to Mercury cafe for another drink, ..NO..apart from to use there toilets
Yoj ask me..."..How was the Balkerne Gate..??.." Was it open or closed do you mean..?.? Was it recently painted..??..Has it been oiled in the last 100 years ..?? Sorry to be so vague but so iscYOUR ..query as usual.

Lovely Roman ruined gateway in the Roman wall Not much else to see here, but worth a look anyway.

As you might expect an ancient ruin to look like !! Disappointed with Colchester tho, not enough tourist signage around to guide you to Roman sites, the Roman Circus Visitor centre is well worth a visit, lots of information to do with roman circus's around the world, Colchester Gladiator racing circus is the only 1 found in Gt Britain so well worth a visit, centre has a small cafe for drinks&bites attached highly recommend a visit
