Reviews of Coventry Cathedral Ruins
M. R.
Beautifully well reserved ruins. I visited during Christmas time and an ice rink had been setup, it was so magical and pretty with the surrounding fairy lights and wintery theme. What an amazing venue to have access to as a city to put on some fantastic events.
J. D.
Wow so much history and have learnt something new about the area.
A beautiful new cathedral but also ruins that tells a story from plaques around the cathedral and from visiting the museum also. Really worth a visit.
G. C.
A must visit if you are in Coventry and have some time to see. There are boards in the ruins that describe the history of the place including the events of the bombing of the cathedral in WW2. At the same time you can visit the stunning new cathedral constructed on the site right next to the ruin.
D. T.
Not far from the train Station. A very informative site. Great photography opportunity. A must on a dry day. We enjoyed every minute we were there
K. H.
Cool place to walk through. Amazing that the walls survived the bombings in 1940. It’s a shame that so many amazing historical buildings were destroyed during this period!
G. g.
Coventry Cathedral still in the hearts of the People and all Christians. Blessed are those who knows the name of God. So so many events in this place, like also watch and observations Tower to reach by so many steps. Important place on the lands of Church of England located close to the Coventry City Council building.
s.
Great place to visit. Ruins are a great memorial to war and what it leaves behind. Good historical information on site.
A. D.
Amazing experience ie old (ruined) with new cathedral next door. Award winning architecture and interior. Well worth a visit - not to be missed!
J. H.
We came for a day out we met a lovely lady doing a few questions on the grounds she showed us where the gallery was and we took loads of photos had a slow wander round it's free entry
A. L.
A beautiful place to visit. A stunning place to come and visit and learn about the ruins pf the Cathedral. The tower access was closed when we visit but it would have been amazing to see the view from above. St Michael cathedral is stunning. We spent about 30-40 minutes to visit and the whole place is enlightening, welcoming and staff, priests are very nice. Definitely one of our favourite site to visit in Coventry. We are bumped we forgot to buy a magnet for our fridge collection 😞. Anyway, beautiful place and surroundings. We visited the site at dusk but also in the morning and both times were unique and stunning. 🙏😊❤️
M. P.
A very chilling experience, to think of the destruction that took place on that day and the 100's killed in the city. Opportunity to see the small exhibition of wartime memorabilia.
A. R.
Very nice catherdral in Coventry City. Amazing that the walls survived the bombings in 1940 and are still standing strong.
M. I.
Our beautiful silver Birch Tree- felled by HS2 lays resting for a night in the ruins. A symbolic and fitting tribute that, like the Cathedral, we can rebuild what we have destroyed. October 16th 2021.
We are Walking Forest, Coventry- and we need to restore and repair our woodlands for the next generation.
D. O. D.
A must if visiting Coventry. It was so peaceful away from the high street.
T. O. G.
A potent reminder of the sometimes indiscriminate destruction of war. Make sure you go up the old tower for an overview. Didn’t have time to go into Basil Spence’s 20th century cathedral next door which also looks great imho, I will do next time!
v. m.
Very emotional place to visit. Right in the middle of the community and at the heart of the city centre.Reminds us all of the devastating effects of war. But its very uplifting too with lots of messages of hope and forgiveness all around the site.If you go to Coventry it's a must you visit this site.its also great how it's linked to the new Cathedral. Its very well done
p. w.
Just a nice place to take a photo when passing by. Plenty of history in this one location.
J. M.
Beautifully preserved ruins of a church that was destroyed. Such a peaceful place to visit and located right in middle of the coventry market. You can spend a day to see the beautiful red stone built cathedral and its surroundings. A visit you cannot miss. Just sit down inside on the benches and enjoy its beauty. No tickets free entry , but value every moment and the beauty of the place
J. B.
The ruins are well maintained & just stunning in their eerie splendour! The little museum on site was well worth a short but fascinating visit & the staff there, all knowledgeable & friendly - watch the 5 minute video first - awful but explains it all so well.
C. D.
The Cathedral is right at the heart of the city. The beautiful sunny weather yesterday brought out the people from their homes and enjoy the outdoors. There are pubs and shops nearby so people are all around the area.
A. D. S. M. U.
Great historical place! Peaceful atmosphere.
G. O. D.
A great historical place to visit. old ruins still present with the new building beside it
T. B.
An amazing tourist attraction! Beautiful scenery, rich history of the cathedral. I especially like how they combined the ruins with the new parts. The old cathedral also hosted a street food festival, which I think is an AMAZING idea. I can only reccomend it to everyone!
N. 9.
Have wanted to visit the Ruin for some time ... Very moving experience!
D. G.
First time here and they have a laser show (one off, I believe, sorry about that)
J. F.
Magnificent and nostalgic. A place for thought and contemplation. A truly mesmerising experience. The museum is a must also.
An absolute must visit.
T. w.
Lovely and peaceful, perfect for a Sunday morning. I was waiting for St Mary's Guildhall to open as I had booked a tour. Fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning 😁👍🌞
K. M.
Hosted a memorial for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen was among the last leaders of the World War II generation. She assumed the throne at the end of the war. The Cathedral share this past.
M. R.
It's great that you can wonder around this place, and that rather than demolish the bits that remained after the bombing during world war two. The tower would have been a great experience, however, there was heavy fog when we went up so couldn't really see much, though we did get to hear the bells close up. Will have to come back and do it again on a clearer day.
A. F.
Thank you coventry catherdral... with lots of love from the Benji and Alison.xxx choir. Xxx
M. P.
To wander round this site is breathtaking, with the walls so intact especially. There's plenty of history to learn and much to see, including some original timber frames that were saved. If you can, find some photos of the cathedral before the war and the bombs fell, and see the same view today, it's eerie. Well worth a visit when in Coventry.
C. L.
One of the most suggestive place in West Midlands. It is very impressive the view that you can have in this place, frozen by the Second World War. The ruins of an important site like this one remember every time the horrors of war, not only against people but also against our heritage. I think that Coventry Cathedral Ruins are a must place to visit when you come in this nice town. I suggest also to climb the tower for having a 360 view of the city, it is very cheap.
D. A.
It's quite an emotional experience, when you consider the tragedy of war, coupled with such an iconic Cathedral that was sadly bombed, a tragedy of war sadly. Its amazing just how you can feel a certain ambient feeling as you walk through the Cathedral ruins, you could almost transport yourself back to that fateful night when the City of Coventry suffered so badly. The downside I found though although I have a soft spot for the people of Coventry, the new Cathedral I thought looks so much out of place, mainly I feel because it's too modern, The new Cathedral looks too 60's, whereas if it had been built with the 1940's theme, then it would have complimented the memory of its predecessor more.
R. C.
Excelent historical landmark.
Try going up the tower and enjoy the views of the top of Coventry City.
The steps are worthwhile 😎
S. W.
Enjoyed the light display, and the Cathedral ruins are well worth seeing.
A. B.
Really interesting part of our country's history - a must visit if you are in the area. We didn't do the tower climb as didn't have time so can't review that but just to see the building and all the statues etc was very interesting and made for a very pleasant walk (also free! You only have to pay for the tower climb)
M.
Very beautiful place, there are stands explaining its history. Unfortunately the tower is closed and you cannot go up, but there are quite a few things to see.
S. K.
Free entrance. The ruins are sad and beautiful. Interesting art work. The stained glass windows in the new cathedral are to die for.
J. L.
I always enjoy visiting these ruins. There is a sense of the grandeur of what used to be and I always wonder what the city might have been like If it had not been blitzed.
J. M.
Very moving and magnificent ruins well linked to the new cathedral. Blitz museum good too.
O. B.
Coventry Cathedral ruins were bombed in the second world War , in fact the whole of Coventry City centre was bombed quite badly because of all the industry , the New Cathedral opposite is lovely
J. E.
Took my daughter ice skating here and it was amazing, absolutely stunning location, architecture is amazing and even better when you can skate round it, really good set up for the ice skating, book the ice skating but worth a visit even when it's not on, highly recommended
A. C.
We sat here and had a spot of lunch whilst the bells rang. Nicely looked after and attaches nicely to the new building / cathedral that sits next to it.
If in the area make sure you take a quick detour for a look!!
S. M.
Attended Coventry Dining Club, beautiful evening with lots of delicious food and drink.
Slight issue with the website for ordering drinks but didn't ruin our night
P. F.
What a lovely building new and old,it's a must for a visit and surrounded by medieval buildings
g. j.
Floral tribute to the Queen Elizabeth superb
C. J.
Incorporating Coventry Glides into the ruins was an absolutely fantastic idea and gave my family an amazing night out. Its also a brilliant way of getting a financial injection where businesses have been crippled by Covid this last year. Well done Coventry. This city is really starting to come alive and flourish. Long may it last.
C. B.
What an awesome place. Really pleased to volunteer at Terry Hall Homecoming gigs. So much history. Brought to life in an unique way.
M. A.
Visited for Coventry Glides Ice rink in December. Really good atmosphere, well run and sensibility priced
H. G.
Beautiful Catedral, the connection between the old and the new is magnificent.
K. B.
This is a fantastic place to visit. Beautiful. Give yourself a couple of hours to see everything
P. M.
Free entry to the Cathedral, visitors are invited to make a donation towards the upkeep but it's not Mandatory.
J. S.
I went to the Terry Hall sessions weekend of gigs. It was amazing to hear music at the ruins and outside as well as seeing the colourful lighting show by UNKLE.
M. B.
I was there in this wonderful setting to see the Gaia expo. It was very good and well supported.
T. W.
Impressive blend of ruins with new Cathedral which opened in the 60s. Well worth a visit.
T. C.
Great historic cathedral destroyed during the Blitz of ww2 and rebuilt it contains the largest tapestry in the world.
A. M.
Stunning, absolutely stunning. So much history. Well worth going.
S. J.
Outdoor ice rink was amazing, would definitely recommend
C. S.
Beautiful and historically rich place to visit. Fantastic insight into the destructive consequences of WW2 and the Blitz
J. C.
Love the peaceful atmosphere. Beautiful spire.
A place to sit and reflect and relax.
D. M.
Lovely atmosphere here, brilliant as a local tourist attraction and a place to have lunch.
S. B.
We went forvthe open-air skating. It was enjoyable, although there's a bit of a bottleneck on one side of the rink due to the Cathedral pillars having been fenced off. So be careful on the far side of the rink from the entrance.
F.
Visit the ruins museum and all the war remains was really surreal.
Q.
The ruins is worth a visit, likewise the Cathedral next to it is a sight to see. It's a mix of when the past meets the future. Interesting bit of history is that the UK allowed enemy forces to bomb the old Cathedral, if not they would have revealed that enigma code had been broken.
R. D.
The gothic Cathedral with its monumental intact and ruined historical scenery at the same time holds a gracing memory of long bygone medieval times and the tragic wounds caused by the devastating second World War. In this eerie but peaceful dichotomy the view is breathtaking, beautiful chiaroscuro to feel deep in our human history. Amazing place, it's more than worth walking around, sitting down and having thoughts while enjoying the impressive view of Nature and Human History in One.
M. H.
Amazing place to visit, so much history.
J. N.
Had a great weekend in these ruins! Such a historical site, very interesting if you know beforehand what happened here.
j. C.
Did Coventry glides here its a beautiful place to come even when the ice skating isn't on, the tower is impressive and its a great place to reflect and go on into the new cathedral. Great place to stop by
C. M.
Old and New cathedrals are worth visiting
G. C.
This is a very moving site and a memorial for reconciliation after the second World War bombing. This stands in stark contrast to the adjacent new cathedral built in the 60s with splendid features. However, there is a sense of stillness here and peace - it does get hired at times and the weekend before there was an entrance fee for some street food event and loud music. On those occasions you feel the site is being misused for an irreverent purpose. Entry is free at other times (not sure what time the gates are closed - note the Tower was closed when we visited (Covid?). Well worth a visit.
D. F.
Ice skating in fantastic surroundings at this time of year.... and in 2020 !! Wouldn't of thought so bit it happened and had a fantastic time!!
G. Y.
Must be over 30 years since my last visit here. I'm not a religious person, but there is something about the place that is very hard to describe. The irony occurs to me that the Germans did the Cathedral an indirect favour when their bombs dropped on it. How many people, especially all those from overseas would be visiting it otherwise? If I was religious, perhaps I'd believe it was simply part of 'His' plan. 😉
J. D.
One of the most amazing n must visit place in Coventry
T. B.
Great place to be. Reminds us that we are all casualties of war. The way the cathedral is preserved helps us reflect more. I was when I sat there, i felt at peace with the world
S. N.
Not always open to the general public. It's being used to make money by having dinner clubs or gigs. Not sure gigs are a good idea for the delicate remains of the structure. They could make more of the ruins as a historical monument. Seems neglected.
G. P.
Preservation of the ruins has a deeper meaning for this town and how far has it come from.
I. V.
Great place!! Specially now that we have had the chance to do ice skating Glides with actual Snow, yesterday. Loved it!!
T. T.
Moving experience in beautiful surroundings.
A.
Worth a visit up the stairs to an open area which has some info on the ruins when you walk around, I have taken some photos if you want to see them. Will add later let me know.
D. R.
Very serene and a must visit if around Coventry.
The ruins are very moving and the inside of the new cathedral is are beautiful.
MUST VISIT!
А. М.
Nice place
A. P.
Despite the rain, view was beautiful
P. S.
Visited here with my daughter in the summer. Thought it was a great place to go. Not a lot there but we spent a good hour and a half just soaking up the atmosphere of it. A few inscriptions to read and a few tactile things. It just has a wonderful feeling about it. How it must have been in war time. Also other places to visit whilst you are in Coventry. You could even stay the night have a day of visiting attractions and a wonderful shopping day in the centre.
M. H.
no words can express the feelings and emotions I experience when I walk through the ruins and into the newer part of Coventry Cathedral... UK City of Culture 2021.
T. P.
A very poignant monument in a beautiful area of Coventry. Definitely worth a visit.
R. T.
This cathedral is stunning the old and new equally good and really worth the visit
J. R.
Despite the main structure being bombed, what remains is well preserved, especially the tower. Can buy a ticket to go to the top too, when the shop is open
V. V. R. M.
Nice place to roam arround
A. C.
A beautiful and powerful monument to the war and it's toll on Coventry. A mere skeleton of the ruined cathedral, the atmosphere is at once eerie and peaceful. Events are also sometimes held in the open space of the cathedral. very good place for a quiet walk and peaceful contemplation.
D. M.
Not to be missed
T. H.
Beautiful place to sit and reflect, not too crowded and doesn't seem to be any restrictions.
C. D.
The ruins are pretty moving as you can still imagine the immense force of the bombs needed to create this amount of damage.
Very well preserved with some parts of stained glass windows intact. Also the tower is very impressive.
Perhaps a must do if visiting Coventry and especially to take children such that it can help them imagine the horrors of WWII.
D. C.
This is the ruining of the original Coventry Cathedral that was bombed in during the second World War in November 1940. It's used sometimes for a music venue, exhibition space and at Christmas they is an ice skating rink.
C. S.
Wonderful spiritual experience and a lesson for all.
K. H.
Went to open air prayer event. Excellent.
A. J.
The old ruins are probably the most iconic part of the City of Coventry. Like the bombed cathedral the city rose like a Phoenix from the ashes.
R. J.
So beautiful- Gaia
Y. O.
I love this place its great for a quite reflective time in the heart of the hustle and bustle of a busy city, never crowded very peaceful, with a sense of the futility of war filling the open area
S. W.
It's one of the most thought provoking buildings still standing from the second world war.
If you are in Coventry it's a must see/visit.
A. N.
I Enjoyed Visiting the Midlands and also Visiting My Cousins that Live down in Coventry and also the City of Culture and also Many things Have Changed in the Town Centre of Coventry City Centre
C. R.
Really excellent little museum in the back right corner of the ruins, well worth your time and the small entrance fee. I hadn't realised that the fire bombing of Coventry was a) as early as 1940 and b) 2/3rds of the city was flattened.
P. F.
Beautiful structure and excellent views from the tower.
N. S.
Nice combo of modern and old
A. M.
Lovely afternoon with family eating scrummy food from Digbeth dining club.
I had a beautiful Kenyan inspired meal from one of the Van's. Really enjoyed it.
A. P.
More here to see than expected. Wheelchair accessible from the tower end although the tower and Coventry Blitz museum is not accessable.
S. W.
It is what it is - ruins, but take time to understand why the cathedral stands in ruins and the meaning behind some of the artefacts, it is a haunting place. Popular with locals in the good weather as a place to sit enjoy lunch and some quiet contemplation
J. B.
Well preserved ruins left after bombing. Usually quiet but classic car show when we visited this time.
C. C.
Created in a time when intolerance and violence led to conflict, the ruins of Coventry Cathedral stand as testament to the fact that we are not immune to these sorts of things today. Visited respectfully by people of all faiths and none, it's disturbing to think that there are people in power and seeking power around the world that would take us back to these times. Visit, read and understand.
J. F.
Amazingly atmospheric! It really makes you think what it must have been like as the fires raged at the start of World War Two. The tall spires are still there and occasionally the bells are ringing too. It's well worth a visit if you're in Coventry and can get occasionally busy as a result so if you'd like to pause and reflect it's best to visit outside weekends. There are also events here such as baptisms.
A. F.
An amzing place. Spend a lot of time here pretending to see the peregrine falcons and talking to strangers.
The lighting is incredible especially the new uplighters.
I reckon everyone should go at least once in their lives.
S. J.
A must see part of Coventry's history.
P.
It is a pity that its not always opened (although there are only ruins left, is kept closed). I happened to go when it was supposed to be open, but they told me the surface was slippery so we couldn’t make it…. It doesn’t make sense for visitors that come from far away..although we insisted the answer was no. There are many great sites, like the ones of The National Trust that awards you when something is slippery, but keeping it closed for that…amazing.
I guess it’s nice to see it from outside but vision is very limited.
The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St Mary's, a monastic building, of which only a few ruins remain (built by Earl Leofric of Mercia and his wife Lady Godiva); St Michael's, a 14th-century gothic church later designated cathedral, which remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War; and the new St Michael's Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former, which is arquitecually a masterpiece, getting together both the old cathedral of St Michael and the modern 21st century building.
It was constructed between the late 14th and early 15th century. It was the largest parish church in England until 1918, when it was elevated to cathedral status.
It was bombed on 14 November 1940 by the German Luftwaffe. This day took place the massive “Coventry bombing”. Due to the great industrial importance of the city, it was one of the biggest victims of the German bombing campaign known as Blitz. Goebbels, even came to propose a new term, "coventrize," to refer to these massive bombings
Only the tower, spire, the outer wall and the bronze effigy and tomb of its first bishop, survived.
Richard Howard had the words "Father Forgive" inscribed on the wall behind the altar of the ruined building afterwards. The spire rises to 90 mt and is the tallest structure in the city, and the third tallest cathedral spire in England, with only Salisbury and Norwich rising higher.
M. K.
It was lovely to see some of the car brands that were built in Coventry in its amazing motor industry history.
A. A.
Part of our English history. Great place to remember those that fell in the second world war and reflect on ones own life.
S. W.
A poignant reminder of a black day in history. A must visit with the rebuilt Cathedral opposite.
A. P.
Fascinating ancient & modern history, the ruins bombed in the 20th century and the modern cathedral with the intriguing and challenging art and architecture of conciliation.
H.
I visit each time I'm in Coventry and love every moment. I recommend a visit to everyone I know back home.
I. O.
Beautiful n peaceful
m. T.

Really cool piece of living history, the burn cross story and the forgiveness of the city of the germans are really touching.
M. C.
Saw a show at this beautiful and atmospheric ruin. Well worth a visit if you are in Coventry.
S.
Inspiring place. Go early on a sunny morning to witness wonderful colour from stained glass windows.
B. J.
If you can get up the spire, well worth it. One of the best areas of the city centre
G. S.
Ruins of Coventry cathedral I have visited when I had been 2 Coventry transport museum. This place is very near 2 Coventry university .during 2nd World War bombardment cathedral was collapsed thougharally to the ground the monument turned in to ruins. Some photos describe it self the tragedy of war it self.
o.
Great bit of history worth visiting
V. T.
Nice place for a walk
T. G.
Very poignant place to visit
A. D.
We went to the Coventry Glides ice skating and it was fantastic. All felt very safe and the skating was such good fun
S. T.
Ancient runs after world war 1
S. H.
Visited this place with my family on 24 Jan 20. It's the memory of German bombing on the city on night 14 Nov 1940. Whole city was devastated with over 500 deaths. Church was made into runines.
N. H.
A very poignant place. Thought provoking and definitely a space that is worth visiting. A stark reminder of what happens when we allow our differences to drive us to conflict.
G. H.
Went to the Gaia show was very good glad they are using the space for events
P. S.
See rating on adjoined newer Cathedral.
Basically a sandstone courtyard these days, but if on a history trek, a definite feature to see. Love the history.
A. H. (. Q.
I went to ring the Cathedral bells on Sunday (my 1st time in Coventry) and found myself in the ruins with a rebuilt Bell tower. Lovely set of bells 12 , 33-3-6 in D
K. E.
Wonderful place with great history and art. One of the few great places to go in Coventry
D. “. V.

E. T.
Must visit place in Coventry.
O. M.
Moving and thought provoking, tye damage aside the new makes one wonder of the power of renewal and forgiveness.
O. W.
Well kept and well looked after ruin. Should be kept as a reminder of the history of the city. When you visit, make sure you go up the tower as the veiw from the top Is worth it.
G. W. (. M. R.
Fabulous place to visit all year round, and the cobbled streets around the cathedral are stunning to walk along. So much history surrounds you 💒
A. C.
Very surreal to stand in the middle and be aware of the history (especially when you see the pictures of Winston Churchill standing in the same spot), a lovely quiet place to stand and remember.
I. N.
Amazing place to seat at the sun and feel the history around you.
D. T.
Ice Skating in the ruins 👌⛸⛸❄

Interesting to visit these ruins after bombing in the war.

Lack of roof on a rainy day is not ideal but beautiful all the same!! Good opportunity to climb the tower as well

Religious or not this is a quiet place to think about WW2 and what happened in Coventry and the UK.

Magnificently preserved ruins. A pleasant place to sit and reflect.

(Translated) I will say that the ruins are well preserved, but now the interior is designed for consumption and fun in the evening, loud music and people buzzing. Food and drink stands, i.e. a typical club atmosphere, if someone wants to enter there and feel the spirit of history, then rather not there. I am disappointed with this. Next to it, the new cathedral is impressive

(Translated) A place to reflect on how destructive humans can be. Different and curious. You can climb the tower and it's worth it to watch the Coventry sky. Mind you, get ready to climb a few steps and watch out for the pigeons. If you are not wearing warm clothes, it is a bad idea because above all it is quite windy

(Translated) Relatively small. The walls that still stand are beautiful and impressive, but the modern cathedral right next to it detracts from the experience.
Small shop (quite expensive) and for a small amount you can climb the tower.
(Original)
Relatief klein. De muren die nog staan zijn mooi en indrukwekkend, maar de moderne kathedraal die er pal naast staat, doet nogal af aan de ervaring.
Klein winkeltje (vrij duur) en voor een klein bedrag mogelijk de toren te beklimmen.
