Fantastic castle! Passed through this castle on one of our school hikes. Was closed for the day but went in as far as the tea room; ate some wonderful cakes. Definitely coming back here for a proper tour!

We really enjoyed the old castle tour, which started outside then inside.
An old church to look around.
Nice little cafe with homemade cakes. Really would recommend it.

Just spent a most enjoyable time at Brancepeth Castle. Such a lovely place with an interesting history dating back from the 1100s to the present day.
The cakes are to die for.

Such an unknown place to us but what a fantastic place. Oliver was our guide, a member of the family that owns it. Such an informative tour which lasted well over an hour (even got a cup of tea afterwards). Such a beautiful place to visit and looking forward to returning and seeing its transformation

Nice 'intact' castle set in lovely grounds well worth a visit :)

Amazing castle that's tucked away. Definitely worth a visit and 100% book the tour. Brilliant to hear about its history and how they are endeavouring to make it the place it should be. Really enjoyed out visit.

Nice Castle, really tall and made of stone. I wish I could have gone in more and take a look, but their tours aren't yet running again because of Covid. You can walk a good way around the castle and check it out. Apparently it's rather cold inside the castle, and the residents have to bundle up year round. There's also a small cafe where you can eat outside.

Just off the main road to Crook. Down the road through the gate's and to the right is the Castle. It is lived in and opens to the public for several days throughout the year. It was a lovely walk round, the castle situated in surrounding trees

This is the most castle like building in North of England, it tries so hard to have everything a castle should have..... Despite it not being a castle! Tours can be arranged and a cafe present. Place is a bit run down in places but worth a visit

This castle belongs to a family, they offer a tour inside of the castle some times during the year. Nonetheless it has its own tea room so you can wander outside the castle and have a cup of tea in the tea room or outdoors. This castle also has some apartments that the owner rents. They also host exhibitions, fairs and a variety of events inside the castle pretty often.

This is fantastic castle. Full of history but unfortunately not open for public although sometimes during open days can be visited.
Caffe is open to the public.

Large castle that's only open to the public by invitation or on days of events such as craft fairs, but still worth a visit, little cafe just inside the gates to the castle but isn't open on Mondays, lovely little church ( St Brandons) within walking distance which is also worth a visit as it has a lovely stained glass window . The castle is a private residence so please keep this in mind and give some consideration to the residents .
J. T.
A lovely, interesting, photogenic castle. The church is also beautiful and I enjoyed a walk around outside it. We weren't there long but if there was a walk to do around there it would be a great place to visit as part of a longer activity.

Visited the North East Art Weekend in Brancepeth Castle, held the last weekend in September each year. (28th and 29th September in 2019 - 10am-6pm both days). Great Art exhibition of over40 artists inside the castle, which is a private residence. Lovely food in the cafe - all home made and a great day out.

Christmas fair was very average and the only stall I was looking for weardale cheese wasn’t there. Cost £4 to have a look about and came away empty handed
C. A. B.
Wow - what a fascinating place. The history, and what a restoration project this has become! A real family affair!
S. R.
Enchanted castle still was passages not yet done up which gives it that extra charm. Cosy team in the the entrance gate with a roaring open fire.

As a photographer I found it very sad that anyone can park their cars right in front of the castle... too bad for photography... but really cool castle!

The guided tour was quite interesting but its obviously a work in progress. The interior clearly needs a considerable amount of money spending on it to restore it to it's original grandeur.

I loved the visit of this castle! We are truly immersed in another era, it's simply breathtaking!
d. b.
Had tour and afternoon tea 2 half hours well spent interesting lovely hot scones.with cream and jam
T. W.
Excellent tour, saw hidden areas of the castle that are planned for restoration, and ended with lovely tea and cakes. Well worth a visit!

Coming back to 12th century? Yes! It is possible. Just visit the castle and the church. The cemetery is so gothic. There is a cosy café at the entrance of the castle. The place e is lovely.
m. f.
Lovely owners of the coffee shop there. Homemade sweets yummy yummy. Thank you
C. E. S.
Wonderful historic place, excellent craft fair is well worth the visit
E. B.
Visited for Hannah Hauxwell exhibition. Found bits of castle I hadn't seen before.

We attended the Christmas Fair here this year having missed a couple of years due to the pandemic. An unavoidably muddy car park due to the weather but we'll organised and with plenty of assistance. Quite a large number of stalls inside the impressive castle bearing a wide range of crafts and produce reflecting local skills and identity. A nice way to help to support a piece of our heritage.

Lovely place for an afternoon out, I especially enjoyed the cosy tea room with it's real fire and tasty cakes.
S. M.
Fabulous hidden gem, best cream teas ever in wonderful surroundings
J. M.

Friendly family owned Cafe and a coffee you can drink and enjoy. Had also a good talk in German with the Landlady as we both are German. Next time I try the one of the Home baked cakes. I can it only recommended.
C. A. Y.
Not as many stalls at the craft fair as there used to be but still good
J. D. B.
I officiated a Wedding Ceremony at this beautiful venue. Such a warm, friendly and romantic occasion. Staff are very friendly too. I highly recommend a Wedding Ceremony here 🙂 xxx

The castle is pretty much complete, with gatehouse, courtyard, and rooms around the courtyard, and set in rolling grounds of grassland and trees - it really gives a feel for how these castles would have been in peaceful times. Really great to visit.
They also run regular events - we went to an art show. The galleries and halls are perfectly suited to displaying art, with lots of light and height and space. They also put out chairs and settees for when you need a break, and there are two cafés (the regular one in the gatehouse which is lovely but tiny, and an exhibition one who is more utilitarian).
Disabled and wheelchair access, once inside the floors are flat and with plenty of space to manoeuvre.
N. R.
Went for a walk around the grounds, glad to find the coffee ☕ shop open for take away, good coffee and delicious homemade German Christmas biscuits. Very smiley, happy lady served us. We will return

It's OK. Today a family home and student residence there is an ancient church nearby that is arguably a better attraction. Limited tours and occasional craft dates etc. I recall a holiday flat let is or was available
Nice grounds
P. C.
Nice place, has a very chic cafe with homemade cakes at the entrance, it's worth trying.
s. h.
its closed on a Tuesday so we just walked around grounds
K. K.
Only went into the tea room which was a small integral part of the gate portculis. Some great gifts. Staff are extremely friendly. Good range of food which was tasty but not sure it was 'home made'. Worth another visit though. Some nice grounds to walk around the base of the outside of the castle and the nearby church. Castle is still a family home so not accessible by the public.
J. G.
Very interesting. It as a long varied history. It is only open on certain days so you need to book but it is worth it.
M. S.
Art show at end of September was well laid out with catalogue to identify work. Interesting display from artists of a variety of types. Delightful surroundings. Wonderful home made refreshments from the family and clean toilet facilities. Must see venue for people with weddings in mind.
j. r.
Beautiful peaceful place to visit...lovely countryside.
A. B.
Good range of craft items and variety of stalls. Food is always high quality with unusual items such as savoury muffins and pastatio and lime cakes.
Prices very reasonable and serving staff efficient and friendly. Enjoyable day out especially as craft fair indoors so rain is no problem unless parked on a soggy area of grass!!
P. B.
Good craft fair. Interesting steam punk creations pies, cakes , sweets, sausages cider, wood carving, plant, paintings, glass fussion was very good. Fashion accessories. And places for coffee. Al in the halls of the castle and on the green
C. B.
Nice open aspect, plenty if parking
B. D.
We went for the craft fair which had a good assortment of stalls selling lovely goods. The castle staff we talked to were very helpfull and friendly. Not as many people there this time but that was probably down to the very heavy rain we'd had the previous day.we thoroughly enjoyed it, then went for a ride up thro Weardale. A good day .

Attended a wedding here. Absolutely amazing place. I had no idea there was such a beautiful castle there that is actually still lived in and working. Located in a small, old fashioned looking village just outside Durham, with a church right next door.
The castle looks to be complete, not sure of the history but looks like a "modern" replica castle rather than something Henry VIII would have built, but it is no less impressive. Full battlements and amazingly furnished rooms inside.
s. n.
Good craft fair in a nice setting.
I. T.
Small castle which is generally not open to the public, sometimes hosts craft fairs etc. There is a very small coffee shop at the castle entrance which is well worth a visit, lovely cakes, scones and drinks.

Beautiful castle. So much to see and do!
N. M.
Went to craft fair. Very expensive products but the stalls I am led to believe from traders are very expensive to take up. The castle from the last time I visited hasn't changed. I thought it was meant to be having on going improvements but I didn't see any visible change inside the castle.
C. B.
Amazing castle, not open for visiting very often but cafe is open in gateway as well as gift shop, check website for days and times, as can vary.
H. G.
While the castle was closed when I stopped, the café in the gate tower, the grounds and nearby church yard was open. The castle is privately owned, but is open to visitors.
S. M.
Unexpected and very dramatic. Not sure about access inside but has a lovely little tea room with outside seating. Holds craft/food events.
