Reviews of Museum on the Mound
A. C.
Had a really enjoyable hour - 1.5 hours in here on a rainy afternoon, reading about the history of Lloyd's Bank and the bank of Scotland. The exhibition is just right, not too short nor too long, and the amount of detail is just right not to make you get bored. The fact that admission is free makes it a steal and is recommended to anyone interested in history. There is a small gift shop here but no cafe or anything.
M. M.
A free-to-enter museum that exhibits the history of Bank of Scotland. See £1m up close. Very informative and you can take as many pictures as you wish. Lovely security staff, too, helped make our visit very enjoyable.
C. P. C.
Great museum, amazing staff. Really well put together and many interactive features. Super worth visiting to learn a bit more about bank history in Scotland.
C. L.
A small free-entry museum about the bank of Scotland. I enjoyed my short visit, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I visited because I wanted to see what £1mil in a glass case looks like - smaller than I expected.
At the end there was a penny press to use for free which mentions the Olympics because they were one of the sponsors.
j. d.
Came in here while waiting to go to the castle. Free entry. Very interesting seeing the history and of course the specimen million pounds. Photo taking is allowed. Lovely views of Edinburgh.
M. D.
This museum is fantastic, 10/10 absolutely wonderful, one of the highlights of my trip. Not too crowded at all, the museum is free and totally worth going, you can get through it very quickly. There are some interactive displays and activities, I recommend trying to crack the safe (which will get you a cool prize!) and doing the life insurance calculation. I learned so much here!! Definitely helps if you have an interest in money and banking, but the whole thing gives interesting historical oversight. The staff is the kindest museum staff I have ever interacted with, so friendly and warm. The gift shop is also unbelievably well priced. If you have a free 30 mins to an hour, definitely check it out!!
A. C.
Another one of Edinburgh's great free attractions. Was lured in by the prospect of seeing £1m, but ended up seeing and learning a lot about the history of currency, which was really interesting.
E. O.
So much history packed in this tiny but informative museum. Time well spent learning about money and coinage.
Y. M.
It was awesome. They even allowed us to make our own coin. The collection is quite nice, there is a lot of history there. And it's free admission. I'd totally recommend it as a must visit place in Edinburgh.
C. C.
I been there and I love it, because I like to collect coins and all sorts of notes ! I bought some notes from the shop after the visit! Really enjoyed it! Nice museum situated in the same building with the bank !
T. 4.
Not a huge amount here and some of exhibits don't work. Interesting enough for a banking museum. Gift shop lady was really friendly.
N. A. I.
Museum about money, banks, and history of Scotland's economy. Perfect viewpoint to capture Scottish Monument. Free entry
R. H.
Pretty small and over too fast but it's a nice building with toilets and it's all free. Staff are polite and helpful. You can see piles of bank notes, old coins and a few video screens showing the area though history. With a visit for free.
R. H.
I recently attended a walking tour entitled ‘Adventures in Banking’. It was an excellent example of a well-led, well-researched and well-planned tour. I learned a lot. I’d highly recommend a visit to the Museum, or a tour. Thank you.
S. H.
Free to visit museum where you can see millions in cash- unfortunately all cancelled notes and behind a glass chamber.. Good place to know the history of money, minting, security etc. Don't miss a visit when in Edinburgh.
R. R.
Not very big considering the size of the building but it's obviously still in use as a workplace too. Quite interesting though. The box with the million quid looks great. Wish it was mine.
S. I.
A very good museum showing the history of money in Scotland tracing back to the beginnings of BoS and Halifax. Includes very good exhibits such as £1million note and £1million in £20 notes. Very educational for visitors of all ages.
B. G.
Brilliant small and free museum. Well worth a visit if you're in the vicinity. The museum itself you can go round within 30 minutes easily so don't base your whole day around it. However, it's rather impressive to see £1,000,000 in a container as well as can be fairly interesting to see how money is made.
K. C.
Fantastic place to learn about the history of money. You can even see what £1m looks like. Awesome place and free admission
R. S.
My kids and I had a great time here! The museum doesn't take that long to get around, so you won't be here for hours. Also, perhaps suited to kids aged 8 and up, not much to do for toddlers etc. Well worth a visit though.
H. B.
Went with my son's school and the workshops are so interesting. I learnt alot definitely recommend
E. J.
Friendly staff in this cozy, tiny museum about money, which ironically doesn’t cost any money! Worth a quick visit if you’re passing by.
B. M.
Arrived at the museum and greeted with a friendly welcome by the museum staff and great learning experience about Scottish Banking.
E. M.
Fascinating and free place to take the kids for an hour or two. Great activity books supplied, and the staff were very willing to explain and interact. We enjoyed trying to find the keyhole in the treasure chests!
M. L.
Small easy to get to and fills you with the history of banking and insurance.
T. M.
My husband loved it. If you have a coin collector or a history buff in your family, it's worth a visit.
D. C.
Not a terribly interesting museum (for me!).
I. N.
Nice small place, but learnt lots of interesting facts. Spent around 90 minutes there. Even the kids love the activity pack!
A. R.
Very interesting free Museum tracking the History of Banking in Scotland, with lots of exhibits and things for the kids to do
J. P.
Really interesting, small museum.
Our grandson was impressed with seeing one million pounds in specimen notes and his 'life assurance policy' from 1824. Staff were friendly and helpful.
M. K.
Awesome
D. M.
Small, but perfectly formed - plus it's free! Excellent displays on the history of banks and money, you can easily spend an hour or two in here absorbing everything on display. Also has activities for kids to keep them engaged - a good place to visit for all the family.
v. s.
A rather small museum with an informative introduction about money for children and adults. You can spend 30 minutes to 1 hour here on a rainy day. There are nice interactive activities like medieval coin making and creating your own life insurance policy. The recent covid setup is that you don't need to prebook, but you do need to wait if there are more than 30 visitors inside.
J. H.
Nice little 30 minute stop if you're walking past, it's free and the million pounds in cash is probably worth it alone, plus interesting facts and history about money and banking. I'd have to recommend it!
H. W.
Very interesting museum. Free to enter. Activity sheets for the kids to complete. Some fun interactive displays
M. R.
Interesting on making notes & coins.
Forgeries, Free .Toilets.
It's underneath the bank ####
J. G. (.
One of Edinburgh architectural landmarks, old and beautiful.
V. S.
Very informative museum about banks and finance.
R. N.
Fantastic place and friendly staff. And if the security guard Gordan is there whilst you visit he will make it a trip to remember.
Very impressed!
m. v. p.
A place where u can see the detailed history of the evolution of scottish bank, coins and notes. There are also many activities for children as well. We can also see the 1 million pounds kept there. Please bring 1 penny with you as you can mould it to scottish penny.
S. E. E.
Excellent trip! Friendly staff and very interesting
T. A.
This is a fascinating small museum showing a history of money, printing and bank history.
Free to enter and interesting enough for children to occupy them whilst they with out what they could spend the million pounds worth of £20s on!
F. W.
Very interesting free museum. As a Scot of a certain age- lots of the exhibits took me right back to my childhood when a 10/- note felt like a million pounds! We managed to solve the puzzle and got our chocolate coins! 😁 The staff were welcoming and friendly too.
G. M.
It was a nice museum and had lots of money inside I especially liked the £1 million ..
Interesting place, well worth a visit.
Some amazing facts. You'll be amazed and bemused around the world of money and The staff were very welcoming.!!
M. K.
This is definitely worth a visit if you're passing by and want to kill some time, probably wouldn't recommend it quite so much for families as many of the more interactive activities were suspended at the time due to the pandemic. But friendly staff and a nice atmosphere, learnt quite a lot.
P. A.
Friendly staff. great info and 1 million specimen pounds... Great for free museum..
D. H.
Great little museum (and free!) describing not only the evolution of the Bank of Scotland, but also many of the pertinent social changes during its development.
There are some items of interest to children while their parents read the more detailed displays.
Also a chance for you to see what £1,000,000 looks like!
Recommended.
I. L.
What a lovely little museum got to see a million pounds and lots of other stuff the staff were really friendly Gordon was specially nice and so was the lady in the shop
R. M.
If you have ever wondered what a million pounds looks like then you have to go here. Just inside the door is a display case with 1 million pounds in it. This is a fun and educational place charting the history of Scottish money. It's also free entry and will fill an hour. Well worth a visit when you are wandering around the city.
I. F.
Greeted at the door by very friendly and welcoming staff who open the door for you, hand you a leaflet and explain where the most interesting parts are. Where else can you see £1,000,000 in cash all in one box. Impressive museum. Worth a visit. Best of all, it's free.
A. M.
Thay ha 1 milion pounds in 2 places cancled & behind perspex.
M. M.
Lovely visit, staff friendly very interesting
M. Ż.
Very interesting museum, lots of reading
M. C.
I was pretty impressed by this museum. It isn't huge, but gives a pretty thorough explanation of the history of Scottish banking, how coins and notes were made and came into being, and the history of insurance - not as dull as it sounds - insurance companies literally had their own fire service to combat building inflagrations!
J. K.
Have passed this building many times. It was a very dreary wet day and we popped in to escape a heavy downpour!
The visit was amazing and a worthwhile educational experience. Great fun for kids as you are offered a workbook to complete. Kids get to strike their own coin. At end of tour many freebies for kids. Staff very helpful. Have your photo taken with ONE MILLOIN POUNDS!
Worth a visit and all free.
G. H.
Brilliant place ,lovely people, great way to pass an hour or two , our grandchildren loved cracking the safe, sadly we were too early for the striking of a coin ,next time. Small gift shop not expensive ,children had a great time . Definitely would go again.
t.
A hidden gem. A small, but fantastic museum with some fascinating things on show (including £1,000,000 in £20 notes; banking and bank advertising memorabilia, etc.). The staff couldn't have been more helpful. So glad I stumbled on this place.
L. M.
Very friendly staff, welcomed our (quite noisy) kids without raising an eyebrow. The trail was fun, but better suited for our 7 year old than the 5 year old. Extra chocolate coins made up for the broken penny press machine, thanks for saving us from a meltdown!
B. P.
First time in Edinburgh and visited this museum today. Fantastic little place and staff were ever so helpful! Will be back again.
C. H.
Superb hidden gem of a museum, all about the founding of the banking system and the role of money in society. And its free!!
S. G.
Interesting museum about the history of money, bank of Scotland. Good for all ages with things for children such as cracking a safe using clues from the exhibits (with chocolate money inside). Covers all sorts of interesting things about money and finance.
M. C.
An interesting place to read about the history of Edinburgh and its banking system. Who knew that looking at £1,000,000 in cash would not be that exciting- something to do with London housing costs i expect... And the notes all had 'cancelled ' printed on them 🤐
T. V.
Very helpful member of staff gave us loads of information and interacted wonderfully with my son. We had a good.look around, cracked a safe, penny rubbings etc and although it was quite old for my son we thoroughly enjoyed it and the staff were super friendly.
D. Y.
We popped in here when we had a spare half hour before meeting friends at the bottom of the Mound.
For those that are interested in how banking developed, this would be particularly interesting. Seeing a million pounds in the flesh was interesting, but kind of tucked away, so could really be easily missed.
Scotland has clearly had a fairly active banking industry, so they had quite a few exhibits to show. So it was quite nice to help pass the time to visit.
T. S.
A small museum about Scottish banking and currency, prefect for a quick visit if you're walking past as its free. The unlock the safe challenge is fun. They have a million pounds in a case on display..
J. T.
A very interesting museum all about money, currently etc. With real two million pounds on display in cancelled twenty pound notes it's fun to see how much space it takes. There's also a shop and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
J. H.
Very friendly staff and genuinely interesting exhibits. Stayed for about an hour having a look around. Gift shop reasonably priced also (especially when you consider the there's no admission fee).
G. O.
A great deal of reading but all very interesting. A million reasons to add this to your visit list
e.
We visited the museum on the mound on a rainy day in Edinburgh. A free museum appealed to us as we knew we could entertain our 4 and 7 year old boys for a bit out of the weather but not worry if they got bored quickly. We had a great time there. The views from several of the windows were fab, despite the weather, and the signs encouraging the children to touch were very well received by our boys. They very much enjoyed the interactive aspects in a lot of the rooms, especially cracking the safe which rewarded them with a chocolate coin. Getting to stand with a million pounds was pretty cool too (even if it was cancelled notes!) It was a grwat way to spend part of the morning and the friendly staff made it a definite 5 stat from Us!
E. C. H.
Interesting premise but a bit boring. They promise that you get to see a million pounds, which you do, but I walked past it without even noticing. My fault? Perhaps. But I was looking for a big pile of money, not neatly stacked bills tucked away in a display case (although I guess what would you expect from a museum?)
A fine diversion, but don't expect to spend more than 20-30 minutes here. Probably mostly interesting to hobbyists.
P.
Great museum to visit, part of Scotland, Edinburgh history. For kids 5+
M. W.
This is a compact museum on the Mound dealing with the history of the banking industry in Scotland and of the building itself. If you are interesting in that or money (there are lots of examples of old notes, coins, etc) then you will find it interesting. There are some interactive elements such as breaking into a safe that might keep the kids interested or lead to tears if the chocolate coins remain safe and sound! Then there is the million pound display. I quite liked the history of counterfeiting. The scope of the museum is limited but it is well presented, free and worth a visit.
R. D.
The staff were very welcoming and made the whole experience for our 4 year old a lot of fun. A couple of interactive games for toddlers. Spent about an hour in here. Well worth a visit
D. M.
One of Edinburgh's hidden treasures! I was trying to entertain my 12 year old sister on a wet day in February, so suggested we visited here. We both loved it, it was fascinating to see how banking has changed (or rather hasn't changed) over the years, and there was just the right amount of interactive things to keep kids happy. The staff were so knowledgeable and happy to answer any silly questions. If I even have to occupy children again then this will definitely be on my list!
F. W.
Unexpected free entry gem near the castle. History of Scottish banks, banking and money. Crack the safe, drool over the £million in cash, quiz for younger ones. Staff very friendly.
C. J.
It's small but well presented and has a broad array. I learnt many interesting things but did feel like it was a bit generous in how kind it was with mentions to unsavoury bank practices. Friendly staff. The million pounds was neat to see.
J. S.
I suppose only a banker (I admit it!) would like this one and it's clearly made for popular admiration since it mostly deals with money and savings .... not a word about commercial loans, that I could see, only mortgages. Probably the most informative is the "heritage" display out front detailing the mostly forcible mergers as all its predecessors made bad loans and investments and were crushed.
B. G.
Very interesting exhibition enjoyed it alot and was free to walk in no hassle with tickets. Highly Recommend going!
J. R.
Small but well formed. Took about 30/45mins to go around. You can take pictures but no flash is allowed. Enjoyed the interactive parts and lots to see.
H. B.
Interesting background of the Bank of Scotland. Cool to see £1 million in notes! We got to strike a coin each when we were there as an event was on - a good wee souvenir from our visit!
a. s.
Nip in and have a look even just to see what a million pounds would look like 🙂
K. K.
Free entry and hugely informative. Everyone likes money and this tells you all you need to know about the establishment of bank and world trade. They also have £1m on display! Great for adults and kids.
M. H.
Interesting place, well worth a visit. Some amazing facts. You'll be amazed and bemused around the world of money and The staff were very welcoming
A. S.
Marvelous and fantastic museum that focuses on the money industry
b. B.
Great place to learn about money history, went with my 6 year old son. Small place but fun, my son enjoyed doing the building the bank with blocks puzzle on a timer.
A. B.
It's very small but interesting museum. Staff have a great knowledge and share it with enthusiasm. Museum is free of charge. I'd like to visit it again in the future.
G.
Quite a small but cute museum. The staff are sooo friendly here and the museum is quite interactive. Worth a visit if you have time. Will take perhaps half an hour to an hour.
S. F. F.
Nice museum, neat and clean. But undoubtedly highlight the excellent friendliness and professionalism of its employees especially the senior man at the door. Few people are like him. Gracias
R. J.
Small but fascinating. And where else can you see an actual million pounds in cash? It's certainly made me reconsider my getaway plans for my next heist!
L. B.
Surprisingly pleasant way to spend about 45 min to an hour. Well-written displays describing the growth of the banking and insurance industry. Interesting collection of bank notes and coins.
D. H.
Small but very interesting museum about the history of the bank of Scotland where else can you get a picture of yourself infront of 1 million pounds worth of Scottish banknotes
L. C.
If you interested in money history, or past, should go in have a wee look, free entry and not so big, good place
F. N.
Interesting museum about the history of the Bank of Scotland and the money itself. Admission is free and worth a visit if you are interested in the topic.
B. H.
Small, free museum tracing the history of money and banking in Scotland. If you think this is boring, you will be very surprised. Great place for seeing something different.

R. A.
Unmissable. The journey of the pound sterling, a before after architecture block build that is engaging and then of course the chocolates if one can crack the safe. Super 45 minutes!
B. T.
Small little museum. Free so worth taking 30 minutes to walk through 😊
J. B.
what a lovely small museum the staff are extremely knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions you might have (take a penny for the squash a penny machine that doesn't charge you but will squash your penny)
S. S.
Great little place to vist only took about 20 mins to walk around and read some of the information but well worth it to see the million pounds up close also a good gift shop.
A. R.
An unexpectedly pretty museum which is friendly for both children and adults. You can learn from Scotland history by tracing the origin of Banking.
C. M.
ever wanted to see what a million pounds looked like? I found it a little underwhelming truth be told, the museum is ok with some interesting tid bits but there's better things to see and do in the city
P. B.
Even reading all the info on the displays there isn't much to this, 30-40minutes tops. Needs to in a larger place with more displays and information to make it really worthwhile.
M. R.
Nice museum, and it's free -no need to pay to get in. Not extraordinary though. I reckon it is good for primary school children.
R. H.
Interesting displays on the history of the Bank of Scotland. Also on banking and money in general. Great views over Princes Street Gardens!
S. R.
Small but interesting place. You can also earn something if you can solve the quest. Also you can make a selfie with one million pounds.
A. Y.
We came upon this by chance in all the years of visiting Edinburgh didn't know it wad there.it was very interesting my husband liked getting his photo taken with the million pound 😊 it belongs to the bank and think they are talking of closing it down which would be a pity
S. T.
Loads of activities for children. Thoroughly enjoyable visit. Kids loved the coin striking and badge making especially.

(Translated) A small but very interesting museum on local and non-local coins. Different issues and coins from different eras. A dip in history very suitable for children. You will find 1 Million pounds on display in denominations of 20, they are copies but it is still a certain effect to be able to quantify a similar figure visually. To visit. Beautiful after sunset, it is always illuminated with different colors according to the period.

(Translated) It can be translated as the mound museum because it is a museum located right on the hill. It is located in a part of the Bank of Scotland's de facto headquarters. As can be expected, it is a museum that focuses on banking, lending, insurance, in short, money. There are some interactive applications inside. For example, you enter your age, profession, etc. on a screen, and it gives you a life insurance document from the 1820s. It's not a very busy museum and admission is free. The time may vary depending on the person, but we spent 1 hour here.
