Reviews of The Royal Scottish Academy
L. J.
We visited in October 2022 and viewed the Impressionists exhibition detailing how Scottish collectors supported the artists and their works. The exhibition was thorough, outlining how Impressionism had evolved, influenced by early schools of art. Besides the well known stars, other lesser known artists were showcased, together with works of later schools, including works by Picasso and Matisse. There were many paintings and sculptures, including some famous works. The exhibition filled all the main halls of the Academy, with helpful staff in the rooms happy to answer questions.
S. G.
We really enjoyed our visit to this gallery especially the showcasing of modern artists work. The separate exhibition we paid to go and see was well worth the visit. We will definitely come back again.
The staff were friendly and very helpful
A. S.
Great Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition on at the moment £11.50 (£10 online) entry, but I thought it was worth it to see these masterpieces. The exhibition is titled Pin-Ups: Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art of Celebrity. There are pieces by other artists of the period, including John Duncan Fergussons La Taresse , Café D'harcourt. It's beauty stopped me in my tracks.
S.
Having visited this modern art gallery, I don't see myself ever going back. Much of the art was woefully forgettable, and often looked like childrens' school art projects. Only a very small handful of pieces demonstrated any identifiable skill or creativity.
If you want to see legitimate art executed by masters, skip this place and just go next door to the Scottish National Gallery where all the classical fine art is. The difference is night and day.
P. T.
Very special place with pictures that are worth spending time with. Good shop and neighbouring coffee shop. Enjoyed it repeatedly.
P. M.
Everyone should visit taste of impressionism.
L. R.
Not my kind of art (modern), but interesting. I didn't like that it cost money and then was given a thick catalog. I would rather have gotten a discount and not been given a catalog, I will end up recycling. Also I think everything was for sale and thus why given a huge catalog.
G. “. G.
Very interesting and enjoyable impressionist exhibition, notwithstanding an excellent permanent collection
P. H.
The royal academy has interesting shows of contemporary art as well as the occasional exhibit of historically important artists. It has a new shop but no restaurant. Many people don't realise that it connects by underground tunnel (whose length also hosts exhibitions as well as an auditorium for scholarly art lectures) to the National gallery which has a lovely indoor restaurant as well as an outdoor seating area that overlooks the beautiful Princes gardens. A nice spot for a coffee & pastry after a day looking at art
N. C.
Came here in the art festival summer time! Really nice memory with friend . It was my first time in Edinburgh and I think here is an old story place , you can find a lot of movie scenes here . I took the city sightseeing bus here very convenient and easy to see every famous place. But be care about the bus timetable Sightseeing bus off at 17:50( maybe have to check again ) anyway really recommend people who live movie or history style ~ here is good for summer vacation .
A. W.
I don't understand I thought this was free? They wanted to charge me £16 but as I had little time I declined and I am sure the last time I was here it was free. If a family of 4 goes to the castle then here that's £150 that can't be right, these are the people you should be encouraging to places like this. I am aware that a Rembrandt exhibition was featured, an important artist, I have seen many of his paintings in the Rijks museum in Amsterdam, where I definitely had to pay but Edinburgh defines itself as culturally motivated, cultural centre or tourist trap?
C. N.
Wonderful exhibitions, well worth visiting. National gallery is at the back. Its lovely to visit also has a restaurant and shop. You could spend the whole day there
E. R.

G. L.

F. N.
Fabulous exhibition of Ade Adesina work.
D. B.
Went last week to the Rembrant exhibition and felt it was an amazing experience, though we did feel the entrance fee in comparison to the amount of actual paintings you get to see was quite high.
F. W.
Well worth visiting. The annual RSA exhibition is usually worth a browse.
C. G.
My visit today, Thursday 29/10/20, was despite Covid restrictions enjoyable. Unfortunately not everything was open. I was impressed by the Stuart Duthin Jerusalem exhibition and hope that everything soon returns to normal.
D. M.

G. O. (.

A. M.
Exhibitions by living Scottish artists feature here under the auspices of the Royal Scottish Academy. The building is also used for large, important exhibitions by the National Gallery of Scotland, tucked behind it on the Mound and also a wonderful place to visit.
J. L.
Interesting recent graduate exhibition. Like one so much we bought it! It is good to know that this venue has free entry every Friday.
D. C.
Some fabulous works at the Annual Exhibition. Wish we had gone before. Next exhibition start at the And of the month. Looking forward to it
S. M.
Went to Rembrandt exhibition. Excellent. Well worth the money. That said always awesome here and free. Why would you not?
E. B.
Some of the art is challenging such as the brick with googly eyes... £1400?? A misprint? And yet I loved the button hole tabs sewn together hanging from the ceiling...
J. L.
Beautiful gallery, not too daunting in scale, calm tourist attraction in the centre of Edinburgh. Saw Rembrandt exhibition - brilliant!
T.
For sure a nice exhibition if you like modern art. For me not.
Quite little exposed items. Then you pass underground to the building next to it. The Scottish art museum
B.
Art was fab but Cafe wouldn't allow us to have tea and cake at 3.00pm because they only had tables available for hot food orders ☹
m. b.
We wanted to see Rembrant exhibition. Very good. Staff helpful and polite. Cafe downstairs was clean. Toilets clean.
L. O.
The Bridget Riley exhibition is worth a visit. Her process, the analysis that's behind each creation is impressive.
j. p.
Spent a good couple of hours looking around with my wife the old master's area not interested in the religious artwork but the rest are well worth looking at
D. N.
Superb Caravaggio exhibition. Very supportive and helpful staff. Well laid out and informative. Closed on 24th - highly recommended.
C. S.

When I was here, an exhibition on Impressionism was being shown with originals by Van Gogh, among others. The exhibition was quite impressive. The building isn't that big, so I was back outside in about an hour. A ticket cost £12 and you could get in without queuing. There was also a small shop.

Visited the "A Taste for Impressionism" exhibition here, which is really worth seeing and boasts works by the world-famous artists Van Gogh, Degas, Gauguin, Monet and Matisse. The value of the works of art exhibited there alone is unimaginable. Highly recommended despite the relatively high entrance fee (£12-14).
M. K.
(Translated) Strangely, it didn't lead directly to the exhibition room, but only to the restaurant in the basement, so I guess I got lost.

Gerne wieder.

Great exhibitions, very creative art and expressive pictures. Extremely nice service. It's really worth a visit. Centrally located in the middle of Princess Street and the Princess Garden. Gladly again.

(Translated) This wonderful Scottish museum is also free with offer. The path is clear and without the risk of leaving behind some works. It is in the center of Princess Street and is made up of two buildings, one for the permanent exhibition, the other for temporary exhibitions, the latter obviously for a fee.

G.
(Translated) It's right next to the National Gallery of Scotland. I haven't seen the paid exhibition hall, so I pass. The free part felt too meager. It was disappointing because there were so many contemporary art works and works by artists who didn't know about photography.
(Original)

We did not visit the permanent exhibition but only the free exhibition of the students of the RSA. And we have to say that it is one of the most beautiful exhibitions of contemporary art to go to. The styles are of course completely mixed, which brings a lot of variety.
