Stunning castle sitting next to the river clyde. Quite alot remains considering it was besieged 6 times. Well worth the visit and some nice walks along the river as well.

Bothwell Castle is sited on a high, steep bank, above a bend in the River Clyde in South Lanarkshire. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Glasgow. Construction of the castle was begun in the 13th century by the ancestors of Clan Murray, to guard a strategic crossing point of the Clyde. Bothwell played a key role in Scotland's wars of independence, changing hands several times. The huge cylindrical donjon was built in the 13th century, but before the rest of the castle was completed it was severely damaged in a series of sieges. Rebuilding in the early 15th century enlarged the castle, but it was abandoned by the 18th century. The present ruin is rectangular, with the remains of the donjon to the west, and the later Great Hall to the east. The courtyard is enclosed by long curtain walls, with round towers at the south-east and south-west corners. The castle was described by Scottish archaeologist William Douglas Simpson as one of the "foremost secular structures of the Middle Ages in Scotland".

What a great day out!! Admission was £3 each and it was dog friendly. Has a souvenir shop and toliet facilities. The lady was great amd friendly. The castle was so nice to see and plenty information/history available regarding the castle. Tgere is a lovely trail to walk beside the river clyde. The autumn colours were great. We had a fabulous day out and couldnt recommend it more. This is my kind of day out. My dog had a great time too. Bring your walking boots and have a great time

Fantastic place for a relaxing walk. Castle and grounds clean, idy and great for photographs. Recommend this place for a relaxing walk. The river flowing behind castle has a nice walk along its banks. Go for a visit, I'll go back!!

Grand castle originally started in the late 13th century. Suffered several sieges and is now in ruins, but with huge upstanding remains. There are toilets and the shop had a hot drinks machine and a few snacks. Glad we stopped off on our way north.

Interesting castle with plenty of historical longevity set in some lovely grounds. Some of the masonry and architecture is very different and reminiscent of the different phases of its life. Easy enough Pushchair and Disabled access to the courtyard, with some toilets on-site too and a small shop. The interior is calm and there are places and benches to relax. There was building work when we were there and you cannot access some areas, which was unfortunate, though it would be better when complete.

Bothwell Castle is hidden away behind the leafy suburbs of Bothwell and Uddingston. Clearly marked signs will take you there in no time. The castle dates back to the 13th century and is very impressive to see. Alas, for many years there has been ongoing work to preserve the structure and some parts are surrounded by scaffolding. It's a relatively cheap castle to go inside. There's not a huge amount to see but it's worth a wee wander. Outside the castle and free to all are wonderful nature trails through the forests and down by the river Clyde. A real hidden gem of a castle.

This ruined castle has a fantastic history, but more importantly in the age has lots of space for kids to run around freely and explore in relative safety. Facilities are very basic but a small shop with ice-cream, drinks and souvenirs is well stocked for it's size.
