Reviews of Broughton House & Garden

I didn't go into the house so cannot comment on that, however the garden is just simply beautiful. The garden is divided into different sections thanks to low hedges and gravel paths. There are seats to take a little break, perfect for a day like ours where the sun was out. There were birds chirping and the buzz of the bees enjoying the spring flowers. While the garden is free to enter there is a donation box, worth giving something if you can.

Amazing property. So many contrasts as you walk through the rooms. The garden is amazing with a great view at the bottom of it.
Quite a few steps in the house and a few in the garden.
Also a great village for a walk around.
We managed here and the garden at Threave on the same day.

Amazing place, the house, studio, collection and garden. We met Izzy the garden cat who called out to us. She was pleased to have visitors.
Wonderful visit.

Well worth a visit. Set out over 3 floors the home of 'Glasgow Boy' Edward Atkinson Hornel. He left the house and contents to the town so everything is the house is original. When we visited there was an artist at work in the studio. I was fascinated by the floor in there there are scratches in the flooring where Hornel cut his canvas. Lots of souvenirs of his visits to Japan and a dedicated area to Robert Burns as Hornel was a collector of his works. I enjoyed my visit immensely and intend to return next year in summer to include the garden as it was closed for winter.

Interesting house and town, very knowledgeable guide, beautiful paintings and artifacts and wonderful gardens
V. M.
Fascinating property formerly belonging to well known artist. Gardens are well maintained and packed with interesting plants

We are members of England NT so reciprocal arrangements. Edward Hornell the painters house. The gallery was on the ground floor but had a chequerboard glass ceiling!! Fantastic fireplace. Lovely gardens and working veg patch. Quite a bit of Japanese influence in the small but packed garden and artifact rooms.

This is well worth a visit .
First time here and it was very interesting. Staff were welcoming and informative .
As it is now winter season the gardens were closed but the house is worth the visit .
The studio that was created to display finished works to potential customers : it is a work of art in itself and also ingenious .
The working studio today is also worth a look and to see current exhibits and versatility and talent of an artist of today .

Simply stunning garden with so much to see at any time of the year. Layed out beautifully. Lots of nice seating areas to sit and enjoy the surrounding

Beautiful unusual gardens. Full of fruit trees, beautiful flowers, sun dials and little pathways some with glimpses of the fishing boats. Well worth a look. We were pleasantly surprised

Lovely house and garden, the garden being one of our all time favourites. We've been visiting for years and it's been interesting to see the changes and developments over time both in the garden and the house. The Japanese anemones have always been a highlight for us (and the occasional friendly cat!). The house is impressive and it's a great opportunity to see Hornel's paintings in situ and to see how he was influenced by his travels and how he worked from photographs.

After viewing Hornel paintings in the Kirkcudbright Art Gallery we came here to discover more about the artist and his work. Excellent museum. Helpful staff gave guided tour of main gallery. Artist studio with unfinished paintings was most interesting. Garden to Broughton House was really special. Recommended
L. B.
Just posting for the garden, as the house was closed when we visited. Worth the visit, even in late October when a garden is past it's best from the year. Would like to visit again in the summer months.
P. H.
Very interesting. Much more extensive than you'd think.
Great gardens.

Lovely large townhouse and gardens of the late artist E A Hornel. A very interesting and lovely experience awaits you here with lots of interesting and beautiful paintings by the world renowned artist. The house is a stunning example of a large townhouse with beautiful woodwork and gorgeous fireplaces. The garden is lovely and well worth a walk around. Would definitely recommend a visit if in the area.
M. R.
We weren't that interested in the house, to be honest, but the garden is amazing, even in the rain. Do go if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed.

Stunning home of Glasgow Boy Edward Hornel is a must do in Kirkcudbright. The house and garden is run by a small and delightful team who know the answers to even the most obscure of questions! Allow time for a leisurely visit.

Had a nice look around this artists house, the architecture and layout was very interesting.
The garden was in full bloom with many unusual and interesting plants, well worth a visit.....
A. W.
Outstanding garden. Beautifully managed and maintained. Highly recommend a visit. Nice helpful staff
D. C.
This is one of the most amazing properties I've ever visited! The garden is magnificent. Highly recommend going, a real treat.
K. A.
House was closed but the garden is beautiful - so much packed into a relatively small space.
G. M.
Beautiful townhouse full of EA Hornell paintings, but the best thing to visit is the back garden. It is immaculately kept and reminds the viewer of the Japanese influences on the Glaswegian art movement of the early twentieth century

Tranquil place to visit lovely artist room with glass roof and garden just sublime
M. M.
A hidden gem... the good looks from the outside hide an interesting tour of the house, artworks and artist's studio, but for me the highlight was the breathtaking gardens hidden at the rear. Spent a lovely afternoon here and will definitely be returning
N. H.
Very interesting. Not sure about Hornel's style, but that's by the by.... Well-informed and helpful staff. Fab garden....
M. G.
Beautiful garden, very interesting house.

Stumbled across this gem on a trip to Kirkcudbright and so pleased we did. Fascinating history of Hornel and his paintings superbly explained by the guides. The gardens to the rear are an added bonus. By coincidence there was also a display of paintings by the Glasgow Boys and Girls in the local art gallery.
J. M.
Really interesting property with a gorgeous garden. I loved learning about the artist and his paintings are beautiful
D. A.
Lovely place. Delightful staff and inspiring gardens. Frogs singing in the pond made my kids day. We bought books chatted to lovely ladies on duty and loved the gardens. The house n art were not bad too lol. A lovely little visit
M. S.
What a lovely art gallery, museum and garden. It features works by EA Hornel who was born in Australia of Scottish parents who returned to Scotland when he was a young child. He bought Broughton House in 1902 and lived there up until his death in 1933. The Garden is large and abundantly planted and has a summerhouse, a greenhouse and a few small water features. Definitely worth a visit.
R. D.
The house is ok including lots of paintings from it's past artist owner, including some good ones from the artist in residence but the real reason to go is the garden. Stunning. Wow. Peaceful...Nice cat too..
B. N.
An excellent and extremely interesting visit. The staff were very knowledgeable and the house fascinating. As icing on the cake, Ewan McClure was the artist in residence. he was painting a still life which was fascinating to see - so much so we bought a painting from him. Don't miss the garden!
B. P.
What a gem. The house is interesting yes..but the garden..wow! Some amazing rarities that you won't find in many other gardens and all packed into an easy to roam space. Very accommodating and courteous staff.
J. W.
Absolutely fantastic house, really interesting and well looked after, the lady on the desk was extremely informative, the gardens were much more than I expected and was really surprised by the variety of plants and displays, will be back in the summer would like to see it in bloom.
V. H.
My first visit to Kirkcudbright and I had never heard of Edward Hornel or Broughton House, so this was an unexpected and delightful discovery. It looks like an unpretentious town house from the street but is quite opulent inside with a lot of interesting things to see. The lady at the entrance desk was both welcoming and informative. Some lovely restored rooms with period furniture and colourful oriental carpets. Hornel's love of Japanese art and culture is reflected in many of the paintings on display and the artefacts he brought back from his travels. You can see his basement studio and also the original pantries and laundry room. There's a coffee machine, tables and second-hand books in the old kitchen. But the highlight for me was the romantic garden with its riot of exotic plants, stepping stones, watercourses, summerhouse and views of the estuary. The autumn colours were beautiful. Would have loved to spend more time here. Well worth a visit!
P. B.
Superb old house with a very interesting history. I had never heard of the artist so very informative. Add to this the most amazing gardens all backing onto the sea and views across the estuary. Well worth a visit.
P. F.
A fantastic house to visit with many artifacts and pieces of art. The Japanese garden is amazing which the children really enjoyed and not forgetting the quiz as well as you go through the rooms.
R. G.
A beautiful old house and the home of 'Glasgow Boys' artist Hornel. The garden makes the visit a truly memorable one. It resembles one of his Japanese paintings, filled with colour and texture, much of it hidden from the house - stunning!
J. J.
A great place to spend the afternoon. The house itself showcases a number of Edward's paintings as well as being frozen in time to give a flavour of what it was like living during early 1900's. The Japanese garden situated at the back of the property is worthy of the visit alone. I was surprised to see a bust of William Ernest Henley in the drawing room and to find out the story of why it was there from a very knowledgeable member of staff who shared many interesting facts about Edwards life was a real treat. If you are in the area then this is a must visit location.
A. A.
Interesting house with contents collected from round about, and artist's pictures, pleasant garden.

A house in a street you'd think but great history and fantastic garden full of fruit trees an all year round garden, delightful! Sitting areas an a view of the surrounding river. Most enjoyable!!!
W. W.
Fascinating insight into the Artists life and travels. The upstairs gallery is beautiful and the work studio fascinating.
Icing on the cake is the fantastic walled garden. A beautiful oasis of growth and beauty.
s. m.
I got lucky and visited on a day with beautiful weather. The gardens are an amazing intricate maze of narrow paths with elements of Oriental influence and traditional English country garden planting.
T.
An interesting and attractive house with exhibits from the artist Edward Hornel. Stunning garden with an enormous range of beautiful plants where every square foot has been used imaginatively
G. S.
A fascinating house in the middle of the beautiful Kirkudbright. The house itself houses many works of art and is lovely to explore. The garden is a real surprise running all the way down to the river and created with style and some humour
T. M.
Unmissable. possibly the best of the many fascinating and beautiful places of all to visit in fabulous "artists' town" Kirkcudbright. McClellan's Castle (which is also great) being shut for repairs, we had all the more time in Hornel's gem house and garden - no bad thing at all.
D. S.
A rare suprise ,step straight off the street ,and get thrown back in time ,then out of the back door into a lovely fern Japanise woodland garden, just went out of curiousity not expecting a great deal found myself godsmacked.
