Very nice little museum showing the history of the area and how people made a living here. Very modern museum with a large variety of well presented artifacts. Great Café with homemade cakes and meals, very friendly staff. Our secret tip: the archeological trail, that starts behind the museum. It takes about 2 hours and leads to a lot of remnants of 3000+ years old roundhouses, including stunning views. When we did the hike, we were accompanied by a lot of fantastic rainbows.
J. H.
Excellent local museum with many varied displays, incl interactive ones. Great level of detailed information. Easy access throughout and a good audiovisual presentation covering the history of the area.
Excellent café on site too.
D. C.
We spent nearly 2 hours here reading everything. Great walk to iron age houses in hills behind museum a MUST. Views amazing at top of detour/optional hill that does require hillwalking experience as very steep.
S. M.
A fantastic museum. Tells a great story of the area. Interactive exhibits for the kids to learn at the same time. Felt safe as Very clean with lots of hand cleaning stations. Further more good walks with historical interest start from the car park. We all really enjoyed the family experience with age ranging from 6 to 63.

A really good visit on a wet afternoon. Booking is recommended but I popped in on the off chance and the very helpful staff managed to get me in after a couple of family groups. The museum allows you to stroll through time, starting off with the geology of the area and then moving on to the crofter's lives, the building of the lighthouse and the impact of both the Second World War and the Cold War on the local area.
J. P.
A wonderful museum. What a creative and attractive transformation of a nuclear bunker! The exhibitions are accessible, attractive and really informative. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food in the cafe is delicious. Well worth a visit.
C. T.
Lovely museum, exactly what we were looking for on a stormy day to learn more about the Highlands way of life, and the History of the place and its people.
Really nice staff too, and the café was perfect as well to warm and fil us up a little bit.
Thank you !
V. M.
Well laid out museum with some excellent displays about local history and rotating exhibits. Lovely gift shop and fantastic cafe upstairs.

First visit today, was amazing!
So much information, really well set out and immaculate. Displays were amazing! Staff very freindly and helpful. There was even traditional live music on!
M. N.
Good things come in small packages and this museum is proof of that. .. it was packed with many exhibits history of the area as well as history in general. I was lucky enough to visit on a day there was a spinning machine demonstration and of course I had to have a go too...
P. R.
A museum of high standards and evoking strong interest. Very eclectic but with strong local history. The displays are put together professionally and the staff are very helpful. There are activities for the kids too. There is a wonderful cafe with nutritious and delicious food and a great outlook. Highly recommended you spend at least an hour here.

What a surprise! Great museum that shouldn't be left for a rainy day. Really interesting and connects you to local life and the area. The cafe is one of the nicest lunch stops we've come across too
M. R.
Came across this gem of a museum whilst travelling the NC500. It provided a fascinating insight into the history of the local area. Well worth a visit - and food in the cafe was excellent!

Great info of surrounding areas from vast geological times to 'recent' time ie lighthouses, to crofters and army. Cafe was lovely and staff all very helpful and friendly ( disabled customer friendly too)
L. S.
A gem of a museum! Everything is very well displayed. The film about Gairloch's history is very professionally done and worth watching all the way through. The café has delicious food and a great view of the Loch. In addition the staff are extremely welcoming. Not to be missed!

Brilliant museum showing the history of the area. Would highly recommend a visit.

Beautifully designed and presented local museum. Fantastic use of an old AAOR bunker. Well worth a visit. Nice cafe.
J. P.
For me Gairloch museum ranks just a smidgen below the British Museum. The archeology trail is beyond amazing and well worth going out of your way to experience.
R. M.
Very helpful staff, love the geology section, plenty of artifacts to reflect times and lives of local people, a visit to the roundhouse sites on the hillside offer stunning views. Enjoy a cake and coffee too in the excellent cafe. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
B. D.
What a fantastic museum, so thoughtfully done and found it so informative about the local area. I'd highly recommend a visit.
K. D.
We really enjoyed our family visit, lots for our 3 year old to do and interest for us as well. A nice range of social and natural historical exhibits. Lovely food, cake and hot chocolate in the cafe on a windy day too.
N. G.
A great little museum. Things to interest the whole family. I've got to admit I enjoyed the rock identification which I think was really for kids. We live fairly close so we got family membership as we'll definitely be back.
C. S.
Absolutely fascinating, informative and a great insight to life in the area and how it has evolved over time. Only had 90 minutes there,, could have easily spent another hour in the museum never mind a visit to what looked like a very nice cafe with a great view. Staff were very welcoming and helpful and I'd like to go back at some point. Highly recommend a visit.
A. P.
An interesting museum, well laid out in an unusual building with a history of it's own, helpful staff
L. P.
What a fantastic place to visit, great history and fabulous insights into local life in past years
M. J.
Fascinating little museum in an interesting building with very friendly staff.
J. D.
Very interesting, helpful in learning about life in the past in this area of Scotland.
Staff very helpful.
D. G.
A fascinating small museum, in a nuclear bunker. I wish there was a bit more information about the bunker itself.
M. A. H.
I love that this building was originally a concrete bunker during the Cold War, and that now it's a modern museum. We wanted to learn more of this area's history -- the clearances, the crofting way of life and were not disappointed. I was fascinated by the open air pulpit! There is a cafe on site, which we didn't use, and also a gift shop and bookshop.
C. J.
Well set up displays of this history of life in the Highlands. Also an interesting video and nice café.
J. W.
Nice museum, very good that the Lighthouse lense is saved.
t. f.
Lovely visit, it's so informative about the local history. Remember to visit the cafe/bistro upstairs, the food is delicious!
C. R.
What a lovely experience, we were made to feel so welcome and really enjoyed the time we spent. The interactive exhibits are particularly good, and it does an excellent job in covering so much of geological, zoological and local history - I learnt so much and could easily go round again. The shop is well stocked, and we look forward to the coastal gin, and gorse soap!
S. O.
Fantastic place and very educational. Impressed with the rainbow over the place when I came out.
T. N.
Lovely museum that really brought to life the local area on terms of geology, wildlife, iron-age, crofting, turn of the century and wartime. There is also a good gift shop and cafe. Beautiful artist exhibition when we visited also.
S. M.
This has a really nicely organised exhibition on the history of the Gairloch Museum. I thought it was well put together. The exhibition of flower painting was definitely better than I expected. I enjoyed the whole visit. I hope you have a good year. It's a good place to go when the weather is poor.
E. W.
A good museum and more than I’d have expected for a town of this size. Contains exhibits about the history of the area and others that are also relevant to wider areas of Scotland such as crofting and the highland clearances. Interesting to see the history of the building itself which is unusual.
Very friendly lady on reception, unfortunately the other one served me which was the only black mark on the museum. I often find as a young male travelling solo that you do not get the warm and chatty reception that an elderly couple would and this was no different.
E. O.
Fascinating museum with easy to understand displays about the complicated geology of the area. Stunning lighthouse light and great historic displays with plenty for children as well.
A. H.
Really enjoyed my morning at Gairloch museum. Kids loved the stuffed animals and rocks upstairs. Especially the earthquake pad.
Didn't take long to explore. An hour. I really enjoyed reading about the crofting and also about the area during the 2nd World War. Definitely recommend for visitors. We booked our time the day before.
R. Y.
Great museum. Crammed with a variety of exhibits which tell the story of the local area. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, super cafe. Excellent use of a Cold War bunker.

This is an excellent museum with lots of interesting exhibits. Great information on local history. Currently there is an exhibition of photographs of 'Scotland from the Air - well worth seeing. Friendly and helpful staff. Very Covid conceious and hygiene measures in place throughout the building. Plenty of parking. Lovely cafe with delicious food. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
I. S.
First time visit and a really excellent exhibition centre with plenty of items to read and touch. Good free to use Cafe upstairs and good clean toilets. Overall, fully recommend a visit if in Gairloch on your way to completing the 500.
J. M.
Really thoughtfully and beautifully laid out. Stunning gift shop where I bought some local beauty products
G. L.
Well worth a visit & all staff so helpful & pleasant. Unfortunately the only time we could visit while on holiday didn't give us time to do justice to all the interesting exhibits. One needs at least half a day to appreciate eveything! So much to see & well presented.Lovely cafe too.
R. E.
A very interesting set of wide ranging informative audio visual, and in some cases touchable, displays in a building with its own story to tell. Friendly and helpful staff and good cafe with lovely views over the sea to Skye.
T. C.
A wonderful museum, very interesting. And a great cafe with lovely food and glorious views! Highly recommended!

The museum was very interesting, with something for everyone, from science to history! The café is exceptional, we had some delicious smoked salmon and would highly recommend trying some of their freshly baked treats.
E. S.
Really interesting exhibition permanent and temporary. Absolutely cracking cafe with great service.
K. C.
This is one of the most imaginative, interactive and interesting local history museums (but with full sight of the wider historical context of Gaelic, religion, crofting, WW1... ) I have ever visited. A truly well deserved Art Fund Museum of the Year.
J. M.
Interesting exhibition, but small, in 15 min you have seen it. 6£ is very ambitious
D. N.
Second visit in two years. Excellent experience, it really brings home the history of the community of Gairloch, and really interesting archaeology and geology of the area.

W. C.
Well laid out exhibits. Lovely place to bring kids.Lots of hands on activities.Excellent cafe with great selection of food.
L.
Full of interest. Would recommend. Used to be an MOD secret bunker but due to the solid rock below could not be a secret underground bunker!!!
a. c.
Nuclear blast doors, extra thick concrete walls and an eclectic, original collection. A little touch of design museum in looks.
The interactive screen on the geology is brilliant. Get there soon to use it undisturbed.
R. D.
Interesting place to visit.

J. S.
Very impressive for the space they have. The staff are all extremely helpful and it was interesting to see and hear about the history of Gairloch and especially that of the Lighthouse at Rua Reidh which is a stressful enough journey by car in cloud and rain!
K. S.
An interesting museum documenting the nature and history of the Gairloch area.
I wasn’t aware of the importance the area played in WW2 as it where the Arctic convoys sought shelter on their supply runs to and from Russia.
Due to the current Covid restrictions, masks are expected to be worn, and you have to prebook a visiting slot.
J. G.
Very interesting quite a lot to see.
R. B.

T. B.
A fascinating collection of local history and geology, all beautifully displayed in an old nuclear bunker. Stay for lunch or cake, you won't regret it!

Excellent insight into the culture, heritage and history of the area. It doesn't quite have the charm of the original site, but there is a lot more room for the exhibits and it is all very professional now.

Alles sehr anschaulich gestaltet.
Zum Museum gehört ein kleines Café. Das Personal ist ausgesprochen freundlich.

A former bunker that has been converted into a small museum. A visit is highly recommended. The exhibition tells, among other things, about the life of the people in this area in the last century and the support of the Russians in World War II via the sea route. Everything is very clearly designed.
