Reviews of Gallery of Modern Art

A gorgeous building on the exterior and interior, beautiful coloured windows which reflect the colours in the sun and welcoming staff on the entrance. The gallery is a must visit if you are in the area, mainly as it is free to visit and why not. Personally, the art is hit and miss but it is a subjective topic and others may feel differently. There are some great Beryl Cook paintings and some beautiful patch work quilts which were in celebration of IWD which were incredible.

A lovely free gallery for a quick visit. There’s beautiful displays, and I particularly enjoyed the community section showcasing artwork created by the local youth.
It takes about 30 minutes to go around the whole thing so makes for a great little break :)

I really liked the current exhibition (sadly, can't remember what it's called). Think it was something about domestic life and it gathers quite an eclectic mix. I liked that it represented AIDS heritage. I also like that it involved work from locals (was it Ferguslie Park?). I also enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes look at the artists' studio recreations. And what's not to love about that huge foot!! 😅

Ok layout and if you are into this modern art it will be good for you.
We spent our time to avoid bad weather.
Saw some interesting things but a vomiting child in a breastfeeding mothers hand is not something I consider art.
Neither child paintings and paper mashes created by adults feels like an effort or art in a level of a museum.
I took pictures of things I liked I was able to attach them also you can imagine there was not much. But as I said if you are into this stuff I am sure the presentation is good.

Seemed accessible. Basic interpretation that made it easy to understand.
The rooms are probably not ideal for exhibitions, but I enjoyed a couple of works in the current collection show “taste”. Go see the Fischli & Weiss video, if you have time.

I visited the Gallery of Modern Art today and I can say I really enjoyed it. While I am not an art critic, so I cannot comment on the content, I was happy to visit a number of different exhibitions. The gallery is well maintained and has a café and adjacent library at the basement. The café was closed when I visited, but the library was open. The library is not a bug one, but it has a variety of books. There are also PCs available to the public, as well as the gallery WiFi is freely accessible. Big plus the free entrance to the whole gallery and exhibitions, as in my opinion any kind of museum/exhibition should be made freely available to everyone. As in many museums, there is a donations box in the entrance where visitors can make their donations. The building itself is also quite interesting and there is an architectural model of it in display from 1996. Overall, a quite nice experience.

Not what I expected but better. Rather than a box-ticking exercise (one Warhol, one Picasso, etc) this is a small but intelligently curated collection of contemporary art from Scotland and beyond. Presented sensitively using the building's layer-cake design, this approach works particularly well for site-specific art. A must-see when in the City Centre.

Found in the heart of Glasgow in Royal Exchange Square, GoMA is FREE to enter. It contains four galleries, a library and gallery shop selling a range inspired by the Collection. The original building that the GOMA is housed in was built in the city's Royal Exchange Square in 1778 as the townhouse of the wealthy tobacco merchant William Cunninghame

Amazing collection of various artworks
Prominently located in the city centre of Glasgow.
Easily reachable through bus or taxi.
There is super loaded library with computers in the basement of the gallery check that out for books to have good read.
The mirror work in the entrance lobby is amazing do check it out after entering the building. Definitely worth to check it out.
It’s free for entry and welcomes all.
Staff is super friendly and building is managed by Glasgow live. There are audio visual stimulation on various exhibits do try them for enriched experience.
Also lots of food options just next to the venue.
Do check out the tour of whole building will take maximum 2 hours.

Though I was pleased to see the work of Rabiya Choudhry in the museum, it is such a shame and a typical tokenistic gesture of this and most mainstream museum to commission or buy grassroot diverse arts, only when the hype is on or to align to current media pressure. Though GoMA claims they've been interested in Rabiya's work since 2018 - essentially with regards to BLM, it is not until 2020 (at the peak of the BLM movement) that Rabiya's work was presented here, through a COVID-19 fund. Nonetheless, £1 million was spent to acquire elitist arts from 7 artists. Yes, that's over £142,000 per artist on average and a whole community would have survived on just 1/7th of this. Still living in the age when this building's foundation was first laid. 3 stars rating to acknowledge the work of other great artists here.

Beautiful place, interesting art... lovely and kind people. People really make Glasgow special 🌻💜

Visited this gallery today and the building is stunning. Really enjoyed the exhibition of black 🖤 art and the carved benches were as good as the exhibits themselves. The staff were very helpful and polite and friendly and I had a wonderful time browsing such beautiful art. Thanks for enhancing my stay here in Glasgow . 😊 ♥.

Not my favourite modern art museum I've been to, there were a number of pieces not quite to my taste, but the building is beautiful and the staff were friendly. The information on the history of the building was very interesting and there were a couple of exhibits I loved. The library downstairs is cute as well.
K.
It’s hard to rate a free museum anything but 5 stars, but the layout of this museum is so confusing that I’m still not sure I saw most of it. I also had no understanding of how the pieces were arranged or laid out. What were the themes? A couple interesting pieces, and the building is lovely with a very interesting history.
I. S. H.
Great building 👍 Lots of interesting exhibits 😊 However, modern art is alway difficult to understand for me 😂
N. W.
Good to explore and loose yourself for a while from the hustle of yhe streets outside.
j. c.
The building is the most impressive thing on show. Art is so loosely defined these days, but really some of the stuff in here is Emperor's New clothes. Wooden boards used as beaver pelt stretching boards, are no way art.
B. B.
Beautiful building that feels like a bit of a TARDIS (bigger on the inside than the outside) with some great history, some interesting exhibits but not much open with the current 'rona restrictions, lots of closed exhibits. You'd be lucky to stretch your visit out for over 30 minutes. Can't moan too much because it's free but I'd give it a miss until the restrictions ease.
R. H. M.
the art work exhibition is great; one of the gallery (they have 4 galleries) also display artworks related with Glasgow International (2021) event along with other venues. Gallery 4 displaying several works by Alasdair Gray (artist and writer).
M. L.
Second time visiting. Its not too bad. I think they should expand a little bit more on what they have on display. A little room of present artists might be nice..and shuffle that from time to time.
S. E.
Small and digestible. Nice and accessible for the more and less enthusiastic about art. Really friendly staff and quite shocked by how affordable some of the items in the giftshop were, particularly the Shrigley designs.
O.
around 200 years old building holding the history for you to visit 🤓
P. K.
Nice and small gallery. However, the staff closes before 5 PM, around 4:50 PM and almost kicked us out, so you can not even go to the toilet as they closed it as well.
A. F.
Good spot to visit in the center of town.Very interesting modern art.Beautiful building.
Free entry
R. M.
A low-key, controversial, and whimsical exhibit. Most are fixated on the the free standing statue outside (Duke of Wellington with his pylon hat).
Upside: Free entrance, VERY friendly and helpful staff.
Downside: Lack of art exhibits. worth no more than 30 minute visit.
T. M.
This is a place where I can stay all day long and won't be bored. It gives me such sense of being. Very artful and encouraging! Whenever I become a little sad or nervous, I visit here. It is very important place for me.
C. R.
The gallery has an interesting collection of art that includes works by Andy Warhol. Nice historical building not far from Buchanan Street.
B. A.
Visited this during my stay in Glasgow for an international conference. Loved the modern art forms. It's free entry.
J. H.
Special building houses worth while exhibitions, which are really modern. The exhibit on colonialism well done, and others as well. Spent more time than expected in avances, so
A. H.
GOMA is in a repurposed classical building. The interior is quite elegant, with an interesting staircase, and the pediment, as well as the entry foyer are lined with mosaics.
Temporary exhibits, some multimedia, and a small permanent collection are on several floors.
There is a bookstore/library and small cafe in the basement.
A. L.
The building is striking with its pillars, and of course the Duke of Wellington with traffic cone on head. The museum contains a history of the building which is interesting but the modern art stuff is a bit random for me. Anyway museum is free and if its raining go and check it out.
D. N.
Lovely old building. Inside is the Art - which will be very subjective - luckily "You don't have to like it all". In the basement is a full-function public library and coffee bar. Well recommended for a 5-50 minutes, depending on your interest. Like all other Glasgow Museums, this is FREE.
b. r.
Not the biggest collection but still a lovely space!! It's also entry by donation which is great and there's a cafe downstairs too! Beautiful stained glass windows!!!!
J. d. G.
The museum shop has some fun items and posters for £4, I bought the Tree of Life by Klimt. However, I did not quite get the modern art objects and videos in the main area because they were not linked according to a theme or idea. It is hard for visitors to interpret its message without any explanation or information. They have become random objects, some by pretentious artists. The library is quite extensive. Staff are friendly.
A. N.
Wonderful selection of contemporary pieces of a variety of mediums. Anyone can enjoy it.
Strange that the top floor was closed because of staff shortage 🤔 pity
L. T.
Definitely something for people that are really into art. The exhibit I saw wasnt really for a casual visit but more for a very engaged viewer. The exhibits are very small but there is also a library and a cafe downstairs. The exhibit, to my knowing, was contemporary art not modern (in the technical sense). So if you are looking for modern artworks (1880s-1970s -ish) this is not the place.
Admission is free of charge so if you are nearby you might as well pop in.
The gift store is very nice and the entrance hall has a cool mirrored wall!
J. M.
It welcoming ,there is a cafe it has disability toilets and a library as well art
E. W.
The gallery of modern art is a museum that you have to visit every couple of months because it keeps changing. The last time I was there a couple of years ago I didn't find anything that I liked but this time around I found quite a few exciting things. Like art about the suffragettes and a fantastic video of an Artist that does chain reactions art with fire. It's also a beautiful building with some great architecture on the outside so have a look round the outside and look up you'll be amazed what you see. The staff is amiable and helpful. There is a fantastic gift shop that sells all sorts of artistic things and Gorgeous jewelry. I recommend just going into the gallery to look at the shop. Some disability things to mention they have a lift which gives you accesses to all the floors but because of its age it's a bit temperamental be patient with it. Also, the accessible toilet which is in the basement of the building it's not very big so getting larger wheelchairs in Might be a bit hard but the staff is more than willing to help. In the basement, there is a library and an adorable cafe that sells a vast range of lunch and snack things. The cafe also has a Macmillan corner where you can get help and advice with cancer.

Great building. Lots of interesting exhibits. Haven't seen library yet.
E. P.
Interesting place of culture, free to visit and even learnt some new information
i.
Visited on 09 December 2018. I had forgotten to write down the tour times but the staff was very kind and accommodating. I got a free private tour! Great place to visit. A shining example of how something with a dark history can be used to improve the future even though it looks nothing like what it did.
C. O.
Nice and beautiful place to visit on a Glasgow tour. Free entry with library and cafe downstairs. Beautiful in and out
G. E.
Brill museum, really well laid out & friendly staff! Loved it, great history & art 😍
T. M.
Gorgeous building that houses a few exhibitions of modern art that passes me by. came for the building and wasnt dissapointed
A. B.
Unfortunately one of the collections is away from Glasgow at present and another gallery was closed for refurbishment. Very helpful and obliging staff to welcome you.
G. N. S.
I love coming to this gallery. It always displays unique pieces like a big foot sofa or one of Wharol's famous soup cans. It is great for school trips and days out on the town. And the price is always right. If you get a chance, you can also check out the library or the cafe.
J. D.
Nice place in Glasgow. In Saturday, between 10:30 and 12:30 they have a art class for children
s. h.
Nice and relaxing place to spend some time ☺️
a. h.
GOMA is always worth a visit. It's not a big gallery, which means you don't get overloaded with the work on display. Good shop too.
M. J.
Great art gallery in Glasgow, worth a visit
C. P.
A place mainly operated for special exhibitions. Although the building itself is small, there are many things to see because the space is used well. There is a cafe and library in the basement where you can take a break.
I. A.
Really great art museum! Small but powerful. It is a must see place in Glasgow!
A. B.
Very interesting modern art works
This place was big and had lots of stuff to look at.
A. S.
If you enjoy Modern Art then this is a must. The Duke outside the museum is a delight. The gift shop has a nice selection.
I. C.
This museum is a great and beautiful museum, there are a lot of piece of art interesting with 4 different floor, for example about the past and the creation of the museum or again some piece of arts by artists of black origin. My favourite piece of art is a cat we see jumping, we feel like we see an extension of his body and that's what really makes the work of art beautiful and is not really common so it’s very a good experience.
J. B.
Such a small volume is available for the public in the magnificent building and inside, such a small amount of art. Worth visiting for the building itself, the library and for coffee and carrot cake in the cafe.
E. A.
From the moment I walked into the foyer with its fragmented wall mirrors, I knew I would enjoy this gallery. I walked through and loved the central circular area offering a view of the various floors and the ceiling above. Artwork by children hanging from the railings on the upper floors gave a delightful feel. After looking round, I visited the library in the basement where there is also a cafe, a great place to rest for a while.
M. S.
Free entry so if you don't like it basically you can leave. It's not worth traveling from far to visit the place but if you are around just go in for few minutes to see it your self. The Duke statue is funny though, every now and then people do something with his cone.
T. R. A.
Very interesting exhibition and there is detailed information on the artists and artwork
L. N.
The gallery is very good very interesting and the activities are correct like a film and you can see a extraordinary piece of art.
But the museum is not big and we can see all piece quickly.
A. L.
The computer area of the library of the Moda after the pcs being updated to something more useful than before looks good.
The café in the library bit is fairly good for a coffee, lunch or snack.
J. C.
Really nice place has some lovely artwork and has a library downstairs for kids

If you want to see the goff and alt culture of Glasgow then o recommend visiting here on a Friday and Saturday to see them in there natural habitat reeking of boost energy mixed with buckfast
K. d. c.
A good quick tour, the exhibition was good.friendly staff. Open til 5pm.
C. M.
Interesting exciting and varied art.
My absolute favourite called ( I think ) How things go by Weiss. But so much more to see
R. H.
Iconic place and effort has been made but the building being tall and thin is an award shape with lots of stairs and small rooms. I always find modern art difficult but somehow I was expecting something better?
P. V.
good experience, safe to visit...
C. T.
Had a great trip with my school there today and the staff were lovely! The photos are some polygons we made as a part of the trip.
C. H.
Brilliant modern art gallery in a beautiful building. They have a big main changing exhibition and then a few more permanent ones upstairs which inventively show their interesting collection - I loved them and how the art was displayed in thought-provoking ways.

Small but nice. Although it was a bit 'emptish', I enjoyed seeing what's there. I very much enjoyed reading about the history of the building. I also liked the Domestic Bliss exhibition. The exhibitions make you think, despite the apparent 'emptiness' of the space as in not being full of "things", "stuff". I personally enjoyed the space. Also, the staff was very nice and helpful. Plus it's free.
C. R.
Glasgow Glasgow Glasgow...what can I say. Came a long way from being a colonial slave city to the utopian cultural hub of the northern hemisphere. Lovely sensual art👍🏼
P. '.
Nice exhibits, entrance is free of charge but donations in all currency are welcomed. They were much ahead of their times when they founded this place; there's also a nice little corner where you can just stop, sit and draw something (you can actually leave your drawing there for others to see).
Inside the gift shop there are some lovely postcards with the Duke on it!
V. r.
Good collection of the art and are so different and modern
L. W.
Haven't been here in AGES .... Enjoyed seeing the old exhibits again and some new ones. Particularly in gallery 3. Staff as lovely as ever 😜
J. A.
Beautiful architecture, and was a great time killer, but was pretty underwhelmed by some of the exhibits
F. H.
Pretty cool. Lots of things to see
J. G.
Unbelievable and stunning location full of History in a grat port of the city
D. R.
Visited on October 18 and was delighted. Especially by the Inner City exhibition and the work of Mitch Miller; his inner city model and dialectograms were amazingly intricate and detailed. Some rooms are a bit poorly lit, true, but overall the work is very well curated. There is a lovely Create Space that's great for kids. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable as well. And completely free admission!
K. F.
Very interesting and enjoyed seeing work by famous people like Hockney and Warhol. It was a shame one of the galleries was closed for repairs when we visited but as it's free entry we can return :-)
S.
Art museums aren't usually my sort of place but I did enjoy my visit here. In total, I think I spent a little over an hour within the gallery. It's certainly a good place to visit if you have a short amount of spare time to do something in Glasgow. The gallery has lots of different exhibits showing very different types of art. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the art. The building itself is also very interesting to look at.
C. B.
Lovely museum, different exhibits. Library in the basement. Very beautiful historical building.
A. S.
There's always something great going on. I personally visit it every month to check out new exhibitions.
A. M.
It was a pleasant visit. Nice way to pass the time.

So-so🤔
c. c.
Beautiful building displaying modern art well worth a visit just to see the building alone
Z. A.
It's a library rather than modern art gallery. But good for citizen.
C. P.
I know they have to deal with the building limitations and room sizes, but felt this was poorly curated. For example, they had a video playing in a high traffic area where people were trying to look at art in the middle of the room, while the person sitting on a bench and trying to watch the video was getting angry and moving left to right to see the video around the others who were trying to look at the art. Unless it was a social experiment to see how angry the video watcher would get... Staff was really nice though, and I witnessed them being very kind to a homeless gentleman who had wandered in to try and bathe in the downstairs restroom. Of course they asked him to leave, but in a kind and humane manner. If you are close, it's worth stopping in, as they do have some good art and it's not that big.
