Reviews of Hugh Miller's Cottage

A very informative and interesting museum all about the famous writer and geologist Hugh Miller. The ladies at the reception desk to the left as you walk in were incredible helpful, friendly and informative. The museum is deceptively big, with 3 levels and the Cottage which Hugh Miller lived in right next to it. The courthouse next to it (which is free) was also incredibly interesting, and hosts a rather comical court case in the old courthouse for visitors to enjoy. I especially enjoyed the garden in the Hugh Miller museum which features his famous ammonite statue. Really worth the visit and spent a good hour and a half here. A necessity if you're visiting Cromarty!

This was a fantastic place to visit and the guides were very friendly and informative. We enjoyed both buildings but the little cottage that Hugh Miller was born in was very atmospheric.

Wonderful museum! Hugh Miller is definitely under-recognised and under- appreciated and this museum brilliant gives an insight into his life and thinking. Beautifully curated with helpful, knowledgeable staff, one of the best museums I’ve been to for a very long time. Thank you :)

Very interesting museum about the fascinating life of Hugh Miller. Lots to see. Lovely garden too. If you holiday in the NTS owned Paye House next door (which I can't recommend highly enough), then you get free entry to the museum. We also took a walk to Eathie Beach after visiting the museum to see the fossils and saw pine martens on our way there!

Really interesting small museum. Collection of stones and fossils. Millers cottage is next door - totally as it was back in 1800s! Lovely small garden too....take time to look!

Fascinating story of the life and times of Hugh Miller, in the thatched cottage that he lived in and the first house he moved into, when first married. Both properties and the gardens have been sympathetically restored, with excellent guidance, information and advice always available. So much better than a impersonal museum.

Wonderful historic birthplace of fairly little-known geologist Hugh Miller, Cromarty's most famous son. Well worth a visit as is the extended museum next door. Very interesting indeed.

There was certainly more to this than I expected. I learnt much about Hugh Millers life, success's and tragedies. The collections of the fossils he collected locally were very interesting. It was also intriguing to see how a 17th century Scottish house was built and the modernisations made. Well worth the visit.

Physically small with lots of content and information. It is the authentic place of birth of Hugh Millar although much of his adult life was not spent there. Samples of his geological specimens are shown and a decent catalogue of his life's work.
The style and ambiance of a Cromarty fishing village very much exists from 200 years ago.

Good value if you have a national trust card. Cute little cottage but very small, only takes about an hour to do the whole experience. Friendly staff.
