Reviews of Hunterian Art Gallery
J. M.
The Hunterian Gallery is right next to the Macintosh Museum. The Macintosh museum is not free but the Gallery is. The Gallery has a variety of exhibits from classic art to modern paintings and sculptures and performances. At the time they also had a Mary Queen of Scots themed exhibition. The Macintosh Museum is a recreation of the original house the artist lived in. It is an excellent way to get an impression of the unique style of the artist. A must see for all design interested.
E. B.
A must visit for lovers of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The interior reconstruction of his Glasgow house is spectacular, the effect of the light amazing. It's small but the exhibition on it and it's rebuild within the Hunterian is fascinating
E. V.
Absolutely lovely, the staff is very helpful too, the Lady and Gentlemen that were in The Macintosh House right before 5pm were so helpful and knowledgeable about the exhibition and were very quick to answer any questions + gave suggestions - if you could please reply to this review with their names they certainly deserve the recognition!
The exhibitions are very varied and interesting, definitely worth the visit, thank you very much 🙏
P. W.
The Mackintosh House is usually what brings me back and this time I had the assistance of two extremely knowledgeable young women who were in attendance to guide my looking and increase my understanding of the furniture and design. Thank you.
I then focused on Whistlers and the James Paterson, thinking that JAMW might well have lent Winter in Glencairn one of his titles, "Arrangement in Grey and Pale Blue" perhaps. (BTW, What's going on with that signature?!)
D. W.
The Lord Kelvin exhibits are fascinating - we learned so much about his contributions to modern technology. The Antonine Wall and Roman pillars and signposts are fascinating and provide great insight into the Roman invasions of Scotland. Museum collection covers wide range of time and topics.
R. L.
A lovely museum located amongst the University of Glasgow's quad buildings. Lovely to see the unbelievable contribution that Scots have made to the arts and sciences.
M. H.
Small entry charge, but worth it for the Rennie Mackintosh furniture and other Macintosh art. Friendly helpful staff. Short walk from city tour bus
A.
The Mackintosh house is very impressive, carefully restored. Shame the original was demolished. I could take or leave the art on display by and large - I preferred the collection at the Kelvingrove.
Y. W.
When you finished visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, you can go to Glasgow University just behind Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Edinburgh University is very heritage and Hunterian Art Gallery also worth to visit.
L. C.
We went to see the Macintosh House which was great, but enjoyed the small gallery also. Well curated and nice text descriptions.
J. M.
Brilliant, eclectic art exhibition and the Mackintosh House is not to be missed. Super helpful, knowledgeable and friendly staff 😀
S. W.
What a stunning building this collection is set in. Lots of interesting exhibits to see. We especially enjoyed the anatomical sections. May be a bit dry for younger family members.
G. J.
The Hunterian is a walk up hill from the nearest underground station, if you have mobility issues then just beware. It's not a particularly hard walk but even so. The museum has some stunning artwork plus mini exhibitions. Attached to it is the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House which has been faithfully taken down from its original site and rebuilt on the side of the art gallery. For some the front steps to the house weren't moved.
It's beautiful in its simplicity.
Well worth a visit.
t.
Small but rich in quality portrait and art gallery. Free and worth a visit
a.
Pleasant place to spend a bit of Sunday. Are with nice architecture and some others museums. Recommend.
L. M.
Hunterian museum is good and across from this even better the art gallery with some great pieces. Also a must situated within the art museum is the Mackintosh Exhibition truly something worth seeing. Take two hours out of your day minimum and see all three.
C. G.
Loved it, beautiful building, well curated collection, and easy safe covid measures in place.
Y. H.
Great museum - small, free and informative & in a beautiful setting. Social distancing markings were present. Great to siege an hour here. You need to book tickets online.
S. S.
Love going to the Hunterian museum so close to the city. The building itself makes me feel lively with so many knowledgable items to explore, its noy huge and do-able in 1-2 hours. Lovely walk around te campus and the viepoint at the back of Adam Smith's building provides a spectacular landscape to sit and relax- either on benches or on grassy slopes during summer
A. W.
You can't miss if you are in Glasgow and it's free!
S. P.
An extraordinary museum. None like it in the UK. Hunter's original eclectic collection of medical oddities and research resources. Plus more, especially the section on the work of Lord Kelvin, the 19th century's most important scientist.
C. M.
Really interesting museum
K. G.
A lot packed in including archaeology, history, geology, innovations, and medicine! I loved the first x-ray machine and the early versions of sanitisers! Also some nice views of the courtyards down below!
R. P.
Mary Queen of Scots exhibition is a must see.
J. K.
Give it at least two hours for this eclectic collection of fossils, Egyptian mummy sarcophagus and treasures, dinosaur skeleton, insect collections, precious stone collections, scientific inventions and teaching aids used in physics/engineering class, medical specimens and tools … and more!
m.
First time I've ever visited the museum despite being a student of the university many years ago and a local boy. The museum is not all that large and the collections seems to be quite modest, at least what's on display when I visited. Fair to say that much of the permanent exhibition is a good collection of fine arts with "Artemisia drinking the ashes of her husband Mausolus" by Eramus Quellinus being my favourite.
On the day of the visit there was also an exhibition of German Expressionism, which is more social commentary than fine arts.
The Hunterian Art Gallery is also in the same building as the MacKintosh House which unlike the art gallery is not free.
鄭.
Really shocked that the museum has so much to offer. And well presented and easily self-guided. Someone for sure with OCD had fun putting collections together and organising the exhibition.
V. S.
After finding it in the university it had lots of interesting information and background on William Hunter's work and life. It also a small section dedicated to the Antonine Wall built North of Hadrians wall. Well worth a visit.
T. M.
Fantastic eclectic collection of objects set in a wonderfully atmospheric university building , amongst the plethora of stuff to look at theres quite a lot from the founding fathers of Glasgow University like Kelvin and Lister but most of the collection is from Hunter himself with all kinds of weird and wonderful things to look at including eyeballs , mummies ,roman signposts and giant gemstones
T. G.
I won't to see the Macintosh house and loved this today. Not busy (Saturday lunchtime) and the house is incredible! A bit more information would have been useful but the guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. A must if you're in Glasgow!
R. R.
One of the must vist. I would recommend to read the short description which is very informative. Kids will really enjoy the place. The venue is inside Glasgow University and not much crowded, but we'll maintained.
S. L.
Fantastic little museum that we just happened upon. Really fascinating, loved it!
T. B.
This is one of the gems of Glasgow the museum is free entry makes a good morning or afternoon location to visit if your in the westend Glasgow. The museum has great range roman stones and artifacts. Museum also has some medical and other interesting stuff for you to view. The museum is located in upper floors there lift to take you to location. ask the guard at entrance of university for location.
Well worth a visit and free entry.
P. C.
The McKintosh house is so beautiful, and the historian guides were very knowledgeable. The attendants were kind and helpful. Hannah, working in the gift shop was helpful and lovely.
A. S.
If you are a Rennie Mackintosh fan you do not want to miss this. It was recreated at the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow.
C. P.
As now required, appointment easily made online before visit. Good response to Covid threat. Sanitisers, one way system clearly marked out, facemask to be worn notices. Small but interesting museum.
F. C.
Can't believe I've lived in Glasgow 15 years and never been here! Definitely worth a visit, beautiful building in stunning location, fabulous museum and great exhibitions, what's not to love
R. H. M.
I learned a lot about the history of UofG, Hunterian, Lord Kelvin, and Lord Lister. Massive collection of heritage artefacts.
C. S.
Good place to see and learn
m. m.
Only the greatest little museum in the world...
M.
A must visit part of Glasgow university. You enter via the university main registration area. Architecturally stunning and historical. Museum has a great collection of ancient and scientific importance. Kids will love to visit the museum.
M. “. S.
A nice place to visit if you have a spare hour. The main exhibit wasn't open but they had 2 small exhibits plus the Mackintosh House so it was great!
P. J.
Great place for art enthusiast. Amazing art with history. Part of gallery is closed for installation new painting and art.
D. S.
I'm not an ardent art fan but enjoyed this gallery. Some interesting paintings with very helpful guides to each. Not crowded, easy to walk around and spend time looking at each.
E. G.
A great little art gallery on the grounds of Glasgow University. (Photos taken on Canon PowerShot SX540 HS Bridge Camera)
A. B.
I went to this gallery as already on site to see the Mackintosh Museum, entry to which you have to pay for. I found the Hunterian a little garish after the Mackintosh but it depends on personal preference, I am not a fan of portraits and paintings of nudes etc.
A. R.
Gorgeous collection of inventions and medical explorations
L. T.
Nice, free gallery located within the university of Glasgow.
The exhibits are mainly artefacts, not so much paintings. There is a broad and very interesting spectrum of exhibits! Definitely worth a visit.
L. C. C.
A real gem that is easily overlooked....take the time to come here. Give it at least 4 hours total on campus to do it minimally. Worth the adventure!
W. P.
Beautiful in museum, lovely size and free to get in.
E. D.
Had as a lot of interesting displays and was very quiet so had plenty of time to explore
Y. S.
Free. A small museum with a finger in most pies. A personal collection that reflects the interests of the collector, from the macabre human body bits to the beautiful gem collection. Lovely building.
M. P.
Educational. Relaxing courtyard and esthetically pleasing Victorian archetecture.
Art is an important part of energy.
P. R.
Full of beautiful artifacts. Bug, gems, skulls and taxidermy. Really magical. Great for harry potter fans in particular!
C. J.
Very interesting exhibits in a beautiful building
M. S.
Mackintosh house is well worth a visit, incredibly beautiful examples of Mackintosh's architectural style
J. J.
Lovely museum, shuffles the display enough to make recurring visits worth it
K. W.
Huge collection of animals hunting from Africa, industrial research and design, art painting, …… very education museum to all ages.
M. F.
Stunnig gem inside the University of Glasgow.
Free access, very suggested.
D. M.
Really interesting and well worth a visit. A hidden gem in the city of Glasgow
j. r.
Brilliant..and first time at the Uni too. Cloisters and quadrant where great too see as well
K. W.
I especially enjoyed the history of the museum itself.
J. S.
Loved this art gallery since I went to University in 1980. A peaceful escape with a wonderful art collection.
B. C.
Absolutely loved this museum! Almost missed it as it is not within the Hunterian art gallery. It's on level four of the University of Glasgow main building. A lot of very interesting specimens along with their history. Thoroughly enjoyed the interactive aspects too. Free admission
A. T.
Not very large museum, but very cozy and interesting. Loved the mummies and dinosaur remnants.
J. R.
Gorgeous little university museum with a interesting collection. The adjoined Macintosh House is definitely worth a visit !
s. m.
I spent an hour here on a nice sunny winters afternoon. A brilliant collection on show. I especially liked the roman pillars and artefacts. There is also a really nice collection of coins. Entry is free and you can also have a wander around Glasgow University which is a great place to see in its own right. You have kelvingrove park and art gallery a short walk away.
B. B.
Usually good, although have of the exhibits not on show, due to new exhibition preparation
S. H.
Interesting museum and great that it's free entry. Gorgeous building, nice to wander and look at in itself! Some of the anatomy displays at the museum not for the squeamish!
M. T.
I love intimate galleries. Interesting pieces one wouldn't see otherwise. Of course the Mackintosh House is special but there are many other works here. A must go!
I.
Amazing saw many great things!
D. Z.
Really great place. The staff were lovely, it’s a pitty that you can’t take aby photos, but the feeling to be there satisfied me enought :)
R. M. d. J.
Amazing museum inside the Glasgow University!
G. W.
Such an interesting museum full of natural science exhibitions and stunning architecture of the university building itself.
E. S.
A lovely wee collection in the university of Glasgow. Very well laid out and very interesting artefacts to explore. Unfortunately not all of the collection was open due to work being carried out when we visited - but just means we’ll have to go again! :)
L. H.
Great art definitely worth the trip, and good cafe, but not great if you have problems with stairs, and lift isn't very well signposted
K. L.
Amazing 😀
Rich culture and techniques we can learn there
D. D.
World class collection of paintings. The plus side of poor marketing is that the place is seldom too busy.
M. H.
So much better than it used to be in the 1990s
S. A.
Amazing place. Worth a visit.
A. M.
Give yourself lots of time or else you will miss some important part of the Gallery.
A. L.
Worth the visit if you love museums or a fan of Mackintosh
K.
Great visit to the Macintosh House. Guides really friendly and very knowledge. Thanks
T. U.
Small but very nice museum, worth visiting
E. M.
Build in 1400 era, this is very cool and nice place
C. &. J.
Shout-out to the very friendly man sorting the University bins who helpfully pointed out Mackintosh House and the very unassuming little art gallery door to an apparently frazzled looking tourist. I was very taken with all of the examples, a lot has been done to take every advantage of a relatively modest space.
T. G.
Closed for us because it was Christmas but lovely architecture
A. T.
Some really good pictures and interesting works. Also the Macintosh House is a must see.
L. A.
Really lovely museum.
G. U.
A nice museum inside the amazing university of Glasgow. The exhibits were really interesting. Although it was not big it is worth visiting . Also it is free to enter.
A. S.
The most pleasant museum so far
D. G.
Oh dear Google and friends. This is a confused listing that seems to combine the Hunterian Art Gallery (next door to the library) and the museum, which is part of the old campus buildings complex. Google maps doesn't even show the location of the museum (as shown in the Gothic architectural photos), only the gallery (inside which is the re-creation of the Mackintosh house).
R. E.
Visited the Mackintosh house, its superb
J. I.
Delightful place covering specific themes as well as the history of the university. The Antonine wall was the highlight when I visited and it was well curated. Set aside an hour for the visit.
s. d.
Really like visiting museums and this was the first time in ages. It's interesting and very informative
S. N.
Was mostly closed for construction, only small sample of collection was on display.
The available display was excellent, just sorry I couldn't see more.
H. S.
Lovely gallery .Worth a visit
D. D.
Helpful staff and very peaceful environment. Displays well and thoughtful layout.
C. M.
Loved it. My favourite parts were the medical parts. Very fascinating
V. B. D.
Great place with lot’s of knowledge about lot of things
W. F. L.
History of a museum was really good. Will visit again if time allows
A. A.
Nice Museum inside Glasgow university
A. T.
Very special building and museum artefacts. Learnt a lot about Roman occupation and Antonine Wall. Upstairs, learnt about human body internals and 19th century investigation into those. And take a look at the ornate cast iron structure of this wonderful building. Don't park in Kelvin Way though, unless you're reasonably fit. I was knackered climbing hundreds of steps to the museum!
B. H.
This museum had lots of information on extinct species animals along with minerals and corals among other things. Whether you are a science amateur or history amateur, you will find the Hunterian museum interesting.
Btw follow me on Instagram @baeheck and @bae_4chair
P. d. P.
As with the nearby Kelvingrove Museum also the Hunterian Museum has so many different themes covered this museum can be a hit and miss at the same time. If you like depth and organisation of a certain theme you will not be very impressed, but on the other hand this museum will have for anybody’s taste something of interest. If you cover the whole museum it becomes a bit chaotic and tiresome. Still recommended if you are in the area and just pick a few themes to visit.
M. R.
Part of the Hunterian Museum is the Art Gallery. Went to see Mackintosh House. What an amazing place. The house is reconstructed but the interior is original. The design is over 100 years old
A. C.
Really glad I discovered this place. Small museum but full of amazing things. Staff were on hand to help. Had a great morning here.
E. S.
Wonderful museum. Lots of interesting artifacts from our local area. Lovely relaxing atmosphere. Stunning grounds
o. a.
I had a great time at the Hunterian museum, learnt a lot actually. Was an eye opener to so many things I didn't know about .The museum is located at the beautiful University of Glasgow main campus
E. S. N.
A travel though history from hundreds years ago, and where many important scientists studied.
C. Ö.
A must go place for tourists and locals
A. W.
Fantastic displays in beautiful building.

U. U. G.
Great. Free.
N. C.
This museum has so many fascinating exhibits. From Roman stone carvings to preserved anatomical specimens everything is displayed in an easy to follow lay out. They even have an Egyptian mummy. Give yourself a good hour or so to walk around as there is plenty to see.
P. S.
Went to see the Mackintosh House, absolutely loved it! Also lovely to see some of the other art work in the gallery. Staff very knowledgeable and passionate about CRM.
S. W.
The art gallery itself didn't feel anything to write home about when I visited however the Mackintosh house is absolutely spectacular and was very much an unexpected highlight of our Glasgow visit.
R. P.
Appears to be an well laid out gallery. Usual virus restrictions. Whistler exhibition well worth a visit.
S. L.
This is an excellent gallery and we were looking at an exhibition by the whistler. A lovely exhibition showing his work ...I really liked the etchings as I felt they had so much detail in them. The gallery itself is immaculate.
M. J.
A well curated traditional museum of all sorts that is worth a visit. Lots of different exhibits in a pristine and classical museum. Not a huge place but something to intrigue everyone.
A. E.
Nice smallish museum. Beautiful space, interesting artifacts.
O. O.
Have a nice collection of artifacts and history. Quite educational and insightful
G. M.
Amazing mixture of high art, engineering, natural history, social and architecture. Probably a few other things too.
N. L.
I visited the zoology museum, which had interesting skeletons in showing the different organisms. Worth a quick 10 minutes look around for free. I would recommend going to the Hunterian Museum, however.
J. D.
A very nice place to visit in Glasgow, if you like science, history or medicine.
The museum is inside the Glasgow University, which is by itself a very nice place to look.
N. L.
Fascinating exhibits. Well worth a visit.
G. K.
Hunterian collection houses a vast collection of artefacts, paintings, anatomical drawings and specimens of all kinds. The Mackintosh House is also part of the collection. Absolutely excellent.
S. J.
Magnificent building. Just the architecture itself is worth a visit. You would be amazed by the exhibits. The set up is just amazing.
N. T.
A very clean and well laid out museum. I must admit that I went to see the stirling engine that is one of the original prototypes made by Robert Stirling back in the early 1800's
M. H.
This place is beautiful not because of museum but architecture wise also.
P. T.
So many interesting things. And you get to see the lovely campus as well.
B. K.
Good place to visit some interesting items
D. C.
Free to get in....Roman Alters on display amongst other things
A. P.
Fascinating reconstruction of the house which the Mackintoshs' lived. Really well worth a visit.
G. M.
My kids and myself enjoyed it very much
A must if you're visiting Glasgow and want to get of the usual beaten track.
Sorry there was no over priced Caffe but recommend this place
Great day out 😊
S. F.
Brilliant, really friendly staff
All free except the Mackintosh House but it's well worth the nominal fee for entry.
R. C.
Brilliant. Not too big but fascinating nonetheless .
C. R.
Bought a jar of pickles...not what I was expecting...was good none the less🤠
G. N.
Nice and interesting collection. I saw here the fist velociraptor skull of my life.
C. P.
Nice Gallery of Scottish artists...although one section was closed off when I went and there was a sign saying next tour leaves in 5 mins but there wasn't one all day.
Worth a visit though
I. G.
Brutal but amazing architecture and CRM collection
S. G.
The Macintosh House was so interesting and creative, I went through each room twice and still couldn't take it all in.
S. M.
One of the best museums I have ever been to. Phenomenal a must visit for every tourist to Glasgow
A. K.
Surprisingly broad collection with real gems. I was astonished several times, and we still had time to check out the Hunterian Museum across the street before lunch. Definitely worth a visit! The gorgeous campus doesn't hurt, nor a walk in the nearby park. That's a nice way to spend a day!
M. K.
Absolutely brilliant, so much to see and do. Brilliant for a family visit.
S. A.
Lovely and amazing
V. E.
The location is amazing: in the University of Glasgow. It contains minerals, fossils...
D. H.
Well we would have loved to see the house but it was shut even after we called to confirm if it was open.
We will be back as I'm sure it will be wonderful to see
I. C.
Fantastic collection. Worth trying the zoology museum.
J. Z.
Bit small, Not sure if they had some parts blocked off bit you can see more pictures in Kelvingrove
S. F.
Fantastic museum, I've visited several times. A must if visiting the university.
A. R.
A wander through the high age of science and exploration, one of several days at this most incredible gallery. Knowledge driven courteous staff.
C. C.
This often overlooked museum in the grounds of Glasgow University is a fascinating insight into one of the leading figures of the Enlightenment. Weird 2 headed animals, Roman artefacts, gemstones and dinosaurs are just a few of the exhibits. You enter via the very impressive cloisters of the Uni.
P. T.
So interesting, we got the Hop on Hop Iff bus, got off at the University and were impressed
i. w.
Macintosh house amazing, very friendly and informative staff
M. H.
Excellent exhibition of prints as well as world class paintings. Student cafe next door is good quality and good value. Currently there are major building works going on that are disrupting local roads and pavements, and it is a bit hilly, so plan well if you have any mobility issues
V. D.
Great museum hidden away in the university. Lots of specialist things in here. Gives you an insight into the university as well as some more general things. Worth going here if you are in the area and take in the surroundings too. Free too if that is a consideration.
s. H.
I adore this gallery. It's not overwhelming and the focus is on scottish artists with an eclectic mix of "rest of the world" too. Fabulous way to spend an hour in Glasgow's west end that isn't overpriced or faux.
E. R.
Beautiful Museum. Very will organised and lots of history
K. J.
It's not a massive place but really fascinating place to visit. If you want to see mackintosh's watercolour collection it's best to check first they are not on public display for long but whilst you are in the museum ,take time to visit the Charles renny mackintosh furniture and it's well worth a look. Photography not allowed in the mackintosh but yes in the museum, Huntarian is ok but no flash photography.
J. F.
Wheelvhair friendly
D. M.
Amazing place! Art gallery and museum is brilliant.
A. W.
Really fascinating and wide ranging exhibits in extraordinarily beautiful historic building. No entry fees. Well worth a visit.
N. M.
A bit difficult to find but eventually working out we had to go into the quadrangle in order to enter. Not to busy plenty of time to see the exhibits. Just need a sign advising no flash photography...
l. m.
A superb small museum! Part of Glasgow University it’s free for the public and holds a lot of natural history, geology and also early medical items. A fascinating place to explore with plenty for children to see.
A. S.
Interesting and eclectic mix of exhibits in a beautiful setting
S. J.
Lovely little gallery to while away an hour, really informative captions, currently showing excellent exhibition on Whistler, mostly small sketches
L. A.
Great museum full of cool and interesting stuff , free entry , good for children and grown ups as well, i was really impressed with the Egyptian and dinosaur stuff , also roman things and s lot of animal fossils ,shiny minerals and metals .
V. P.
This is a jewel of a museum within the University of Glasgow main campus. Free to visit and lots to learn. Also worth going across the University avenue to visit the Hunterian Gallery and the Mackintosh House.
B. M.
Full of interesting artefacts and exhibits, including human organs pickled in jars and graphic life-size cut through childbirth models!!! Never a dull moment. Lots to keep you informed and entertained for a few hours.
N. E.
Museum layout is good. Easy to read everything and very interesting.
I. S.
Worth visiting this gallery and museum at Glasgow.
J. N.
Fantastic collection of Lord Kelvin's apparatus. Well curated museum.
S.
Love the fact I'm a Glasgow university student and get to see this place often
Well worth a visit
J. M.
Came across this on our stop over in Cardross on our way up to Skye. Studied Mackintosh years ago (But forgot a lot about him!) so it was good to see his work in person. The house was interesting, and the guises were very knowledgeable! Not a massive day out, maybe 1-2 hours to get around the inside and out. Very surreal walking over the top of the house.
W. B.
A walk through time to an age of elegance.
R. S.
One of the best museums I have ever been in , didn't know it existed until I did my Glasgow university tour . A must see
J. M.
A museum with bright but cozy environment.
j. m.
The Mackintosh house is wonderful. The permanent collection is a bit of a mish-mash: many good things, a few fairly awful ones, but hard to spot the rationale behind the hanging. German Expressionist prints almost wholly depressing and unpleasant!
I. T.
Amazing piece of history.
Free and well worth a visit. Awesome displays.
M. L.
Nice place to visit. Expected to be a bit bigger
V. W.
Excellent museum very impressed covers a lot of ground. Guides very helpful, fascinating exhibits if into medical things. Some lovely art work and explanations. Worth a visit.
A. F.
Really beautiful, particularly good to visit if you are a fan of Mackintosh as the staff are very knowledgeable.
F. D.
Very educational , amazing collections ,
The first public Museum in Glasgow .👍
E. G.
Nice assortment of curiosities exhibition. Interesting to see how human obsession for collection and possession can lead to such a diverse set of collections.
Although, not enough exhibits and doesn't seem well maintained.
S. P.
Nice museum! Remember to book your tickets.
K. C.
Awesome selection of dead stuff. Beautiful university.
J. G.
Excellent well produced exhibition
G. M. G. L.
Great place to visit, loved going since I was a kid.
P. P.
Great museum in a beautiful building - lots to look at, but small enough that you can get round in a few hours. Well worth a look.
J. D.
Worth a visit. Great collection. Not too big but ideal for a morning or afternoon visit.
J. W.
Worth a visit . Lots to see and for me it took over 3hrs . It's free entrance . It's a must place to visit .
m. c.
Great museum in a beautiful campus. Routes are very well marked to guide the visitors. The automatic lighting is very environmentally conscious. Great fitting for a university.
D. Y.
I'm biased because I give amazing tours here as a student volunteer but it truly is a great place to visit. Alongside the art gallery and mackintosh house and the nearby kelvingrove museum
P. E.
A gem! Really interesting exhibits and we'll worth a visit.
Pity nowhere to rest and refresh though.
N. M.
Funny ol gallery. The approach to curation seems to be "throw everything in and stir it til it fits". Some great stuff in here, plus Whistler's paintings will make you feel better about your prospects of success as a painter
C. S.
Very cool place highly recommend if you're in the University of Glasgow campus
N. W.
We loved this place. and the Rennie McIntosh collection is really a must.
M. P.
Definitely worth a visit just to see all the collections on display and it's free too! Walking through the University of Glasgow was a pretty sight too, I wish when I was in university we had a museum on campus!
M. A.
Nice experience and good work to move the house

Always worth a visit, fascinating historic buildings.
R. C.
A fascinating, ectlectic museum of a manageable size. I especially liked the Georgian scientific artifacts.
R. B.
A lovely airy house with many pieces of original Mackintosh furniture. Just a few rooms to visit but certainly well worth it.
K. F. (.
Awesome museum that always gets overlooked.
G. F.
Brilliant. Had a great time here lots to see. Great as free and not as busy as some of the other museum's in Glasgow.
K. D.
Absolutely thrilled about what is showed in this place, specially the specimens there. Just freaking interesting.
K. M.
The Hunterian isn't totally free, offering some ticket buyer displays as the Natural History museum in Edinburgh. "Ability to pay" is an interesting concept, allowing enjoyment of relative wealth. 😁
R. S.
Interesting place to visit, collection of eccentric items on display.
M. P.
One of the best museums in the city. Definitely worth it.
I. E. R.
Free and quick museum with history and natural science topics. Don't forget to previously register online !
k. h.
Lots to see and so well set out.
J. H.
Fleeting visit to see the Rembrant(s) which I was told was currently out so took in the Whistlers and was seized upon - in a friendly way - by an American tourist who, unlike me seemed to know about the Whistler!
I pleaded ignorance and she duly educated me and almost refused to let me go. Another American joined the group and the two of them engaged with the latter's body language tending to exclude me - stand offish she was - the last arrival!
Now I know about the Whistler and have my knowledge of the use of body language reinforced!
Also took in the Mackintosh House opposite - wonderful! Masses of staff on duty all eager to impart the knowledge! No American ladies bumped into there!
Z. S.
We make an attempt to come here every time we are in Scotland. It's just such a wonderful calm and energetic place celebrating art and discovery in times when there was still so much wonder at what treasures the world held.
J. S.
good one way system, nice whistler exhibit. bathrooms located downstairs. cute little gift shop
M. A.
Very nice and imformative place to visite . A must pay visite place in glasgow

Fascinating and informative exhibits. Well laid out with clear narrative.

Great museum! I could spend hours here!

Fantastic educational and entertaining . Staff very helpful especially with youngsters in tow
D. C.
What a fabulous and interesting museum. One you must take time to go and see.
D. K.
Great experience if you like this type of art and architecture. Guided tours only.
R. B.
A free museum is something to never complain about but expect that the organization and content may not be curated and laid out in the most logical manner as you walk through. I'd still highly recommend this as a great stop as you walk through the University.
M. S.
Gorgeous collection of paintings and medals. Masterpieces include Rembrandt, Whistler, Pissarro, Sisley, Rubens and drawings by Mantegna and Parmigianino. Absolutely well organised also the spatial exhibition of the works. The attendants are really kind, besides.
B. F.
Really really interesting to see all the artifacts and the history behind it. It's definitely a must go.
A. M.
It's free, so a visit can't be bad.
N. M.
Hidden gem! Really interesting and well laid out exhibits.
F. F.
Well organized and above all evocative. The path inside is really interesting and touches history and medicine as well as physics in a truly captivating way.
T. W.
University museum with quality collection covering a wide range of fields including medicine, paleontology, geology, botany, zoology, anthropology, and scientific instruments. Great collection of Scottish Roman artifacts too. Housed in historic building. Better for adults and older children.
L. R.
Amazing collection. Very thoughtfully curated.
Whistler etchings are a particular highlight.
P. B.
To be fair, the Art was not to my taste, but that was irrelevant by the miserable staff that welcomed us! Macintosh house is worth a visit, just don't expect a warm welcome!
G. T.
Everything that's here is very interesting.
It's worth seeing. I liked it very much.
Д. Т.
It's a magic, emotional place and the most beautiful museum in the world
B. M.
Excellent museum.

Gave a good insight into the life and works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Staff were very knowledgeable when asked.
K. L.
Wow what a place! And all in the grounds of Glasgow university we found our way there by using a map app on phones other wise we may have got a bit lost. But sign posted from near the uni, plenty of fascinating things to see especially medical which was a great interest my friend who wonts to be a nurse. Well worth a visit. Please leave a like.

There are a few Hunterian Museums. This is opposite the University of Glasgow main building. Closest to the library is The Hunterian Art Gallery , which has Macintosh House inside however with an entrance fee of 5£. The other Hunterian is situated near the University of Glasgow main campus (big Victorian looking building) , where you will find the dinosaur skeleton.
S. S.
A great art collection with many highlights such as Whistler and Mackintosh, interesting temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, and a wide variety of older art and subjects.
M. R.
A great museum where you can enjoy both science with animals and discoveries as well as history through art. Don't forget visit Dalí's painting!
a. b.
Great gallery to visit if interested in works by Glasgow Boys, undergoing revamp of galleries so best to check what is available to see.I have visited many times and always interesting works of art to see.
M. H.
It's worth a visit
J. J.
Beautiful architecture and interior design, definitely worth a visit for Mackintosh fans. The staff are very knowledgeable and give good insight.
A. B.
It’s been two years since our trip to Scotland but we still remember the gentleman who guided us through the house and introduced us to Margaret Macdonald. Thank you for your passion Sir, we will always remember that visit! ❤️
G. S.
Very Interesting Place in the Heart of Glasgow University
G. S.
Excellent mix of collections; art, history and the natural world
K. M.
Absolutely loved it! The exhibits were in topics ranging from medicine to natural history. Loved the insight I gained into academic research and how it was carried out in the past (as compared to the present). The museum was all in all beautifully set up, finding the tab responding to the exhibit you were looking at was very easy, which made things that much easier. Wonderful that there was a seating area at the natural history section, loved the view into the garden of thw uni. Most commendable about this museum, though, is that it's free. Opening the public to knowledge like that in the Hunterian Museum could potentially make a great difference. If you're ever in Glasgow, don't miss the Hunterian Museum!
Y. K.
A nice place for anyone interested in history of science specifically medicine history. It holds a nice collection of artifacts, rocks and fossils as well.
K. G.
Very interesting, you can find William Hunter's collection, and natural and applied sciences exposition.
D. M.
A wonderful place to visit. The old university buildings are worth seeing in their own right!. The Roman history and remains are fascinating.
F. e.
If day this place is well with the price, but entry is free.
It's by no means a big museum, but it has archeological exhibits, and medicine history exhibits (be forewarned, human bones and life size reproductions of pregnant women with the belly opened and the fetus on display.).
The place is a little hard to find though. Not a lot of signage and it's in the university.
J. W.
Beautiful old building with cool historical artifacts.
A. B.
One of THE most magnificent museums. The archectecture indoors is amazing.
R. N.
Lots of very interesting exhibits that makes for a nice hour after exploring Glasgow University
i. m.
Covid friendly. Leave a few hours to see.
J. M.
Worth noting that the Museum and Art Gallery are separate buildings on either side of the road.
S. K.
A must place to visit for science lovers. Amazing display of inventions by Kelvin, Joule, Helmholz and Hunter, showing a rich history of technological advancements at University of Glasgow.
A. R.
Very awesome museum , amazing collection , very educating
C. M.
Amazing display of artifacts that will enthrall people with all historical interests.
L. P.
A nice small museum with a hazardous museography and certain items that were disturbing.
J. O.
Fascinating historical things.
A. A.
The workers there are superb. Nice place
P. K.
Great and free small museum. It's hidden in the middle of the university opposite to the Hunterian art gallery. Inside you'll find something like a teaser of the big boys. Some stones, some bones, bit of Roman culture. Small and interesting collection of Inuit artifacts and a lot about early surgery/anatomy. The museum is beautifully located and definitely worth a visit.
D.
Possibly my favourite museum in Glasgow. An ecclectic mix of artefacts but lots of good information and just the right size to get around it in an afternoon.
D. S.
A must see in Glasgow. The whole surrounding area is beautiful, and a joy to walk around.
H. B.
Love the Roman archaeology. Go check it out folks its history
L. W.
Great museum with a good variety of exhibits
R. P.
Another great free place to visit!
j. t.
Lots of interesting exhibits my daughter liked the dinosaurs, animals, minerals and some of the human body parts in jars, i liked some of inventions, entry was free and so was parking in the university campus
B. “. T.
Interesting look back at history of Rennie Mackintosh design's.
B. H.
Only had 4 days in Glasgow to specifically visit another destination, but after a brief look around, it has to be done as the building is beautiful. GO!
A. P.
A must visit place if you are at the University.. Exceptional preservation of various body parts of humans and Insects. Being from the life sciences background, was particularly interesting to me. Other collections included various industrial devices invented by lord Kelvin. Certainly, enjoys the prominence of being the oldest museum of Scotland.
A. W.
Disappointed I did not get to see this, it says on sign outside it closes at 5pm but curator said 4 15pm , I did check on the website and it had recently changed. 1) Surely they can change the sign 2) It's the height of the tourist season, the schools are closed, how will you attract visitors with such a draconian attitude
A. B. B.
There is really creepy stuff there. It is very small but really good!
A. M.
It's an ok house/museum, but you'd get the same experience looking at photos. It's not even Mackintosh's house, that was demolished, this is a 1960s built replica. Don't even think about breathing near the furniture, the rather high strung museum staff person will have a nervous meltdown. Not great patron hospitality on the whole. Worth a miss if you're on the fence about it, save your fiver and Google some photos.
M. H.
We loved our first visit to The Mackintosh House, and we will be back for a second visit on our next visit to your wonderfully welcoming city, we find the people of Glasgow very friendly!
R. M.
Great exhibition. You can learn a lot from the ancient goods for free. Must see them when you visit Glasgow.
A. V.
Neat museum within Glasgow University. Definitely a must see.
A. A.
Located within the University of Glasgow, this is a must visit place. It is meticulously curated and we'll organised and covers a vast variety of subjects. Highly recommended for students of all ages.
t. d. f.
Extremely interesting and very proud to be a Glaswegian
D. C.
Excellent, well laid out exhibits.
C. F.
Loved it! It's right in the centre of the University buildings and not only do you get to walk through what must have been the inspiration for Hogwarts, you get a wonderful experience in the beautiful museum. Definitely recommend a rainy Sunday afternoon here!
G. M.
Great. Museum great day out
V. S.
It is a fantastic place to go and learn about William Hunter, a pioneer in medical research.
L. H.
Lovely place
A. M.
Interesting place full of unusual things. Worth a visit if only for the architecture. Entrance is free.
A. N.
Great museum with guided tours. Free admission.
R. C.
It's Beautifull place to visit..
N. I.
Beautiful building and a fascinating range of exhibits
N. S.
Smallish historic museum with wide collection of artifacts and some art. Fascinating collection of medical items and specimens. A bit like a smaller and less outlandish Pitt Rivers, Oxford
C. W.
I came here for the Mackintosh house, which is worth a visit. The rest of the gallery is quite small, but there are some good pieces.
D. H.
Amazing. You need atleast half a day to really appreciate it, or if you're like me and like to read about all the fantastic exhibits, longer. If you're squeamish, you may wish to walk past the first section. There's a section about previous minerals and gems, old armoury and weapons, skeletons
M. A.
Great place for adults (children that have an interest in history/looking at exhibits without touching) finding the actual museum was a bit of a task as it's within the Glasgow university campus and signage is not particularly good. Disabled parking at the main entrance and lifts to all floors so fantastic access. Not sure about disabled toilets? Ladies toilets at the time of our visit were a disgrace but don't let that put you off. There is a visitor shop which has a huge range of items both related to the museum and the University itself.
We will be visiting again as this visit we took our 4 year old grandson and he wasn't really impressed so we kind of hurried round. The architecture of the university is stunning and very photogenic. There are a wide range of exhibits from Roman coins and findings dug up around the central belt of Scotland, to medical specimens, bones, fossils, gemstones, crystals, and taxidermy. There is so much more that we didn't get to see and as mentioned we will be returning for an adults only visit. Free entry is a bonus and a box for donations if you feel inclined. The university itself is situated in Glasgow West end which is a hive of activity even on a Sunday. Plenty of variety for eating, drinks or a night out. Also great for people watching. Another fantastic free resource. Please go visit!
K. B.
Lovely collection of Roman artifacts, fossils, minerals and, for physics lovers, a collection of Lord Kelvin’s scientific equipment.
R. L.
An eclectic mix of things, some fairly horrific! In a beautiful building.
D. h.
Fascinating museum one of Glasgows hidden gems
E. B.
Great museum located on the campus of University of Glasglow
A. R.
The Hunterian is the place to go if you want to find pieces of the Antonine Wall, which is part of the permanent collection, titled Rome's Last Frontier as it was the furthest north the Romans ever came into Scotland. Other exhibits include dinosaurs and outfits from around the world, as well as natural history exhibits.
J. K.
Interesting exhibits, free admission, beautiful building.
A. D.
Very nice museum.
M. L.
Eclectic range of exhibits. Interesting building and location
K. L.
A well handled one way system (combined with hand sanitizer stations) made for an easy going pandemic afternoon out. Plenty of interesting things to see, particularly if you're interested in science. The specimen jars are a particularly mad spectacle to behold, though maybe best to skip past them if you're squeamish.
M. N.
Pretty nice museum in the amazing Glasgow University
A. L. P.
This is a delightful collection of many things that anyone can enjoy. Do you like natural history? You've got it. So you like minerals? Got them. Do you like anatomical dissections? Got them. Do you like old pottery? Got it! Do you like mummies? Got them too! Seriously, give it a try because it's really well curated and organised!
M. O.
This was the highlight of my trip to Glasgow. Even though it was small, it was so fascinating
G. S.
Everything was really good and very interesting. I really liked the virtual world games I found them very interesting and fun.
S. D.
Hidden gem in the West end.. less busy than the Kelvingrove but as valuable.
P. M.
Fantastic art gallery
M. O.
Fantastic collection. First class building with amazing day-lightning. Nice and relaxed atmosphere.
J. C.
First time there and I enjoyed it. Will be back.
M. J. F.
Small, but we'll worth a visit with an interesting collection of Roman nick nacks, Lord Kelvin scientific instruments and minerals
Z. H.
Very cool and cool university. Better than strathclyde!
A. C.
Not easy to find, it seems to be hidden away at the back of the university main building. The art gallery is better signposted and identified - I found that - but was disappointing, mostly consisting of copies apart from an extensive collection of Whistlers. After the art gallery I gave up and walked across to the Kelvingrove gallery instead.
P. F.
Elegant lots to see toilet classy place
T. L.
Museum associated with Glasgow University. Not huge, but some unusual and interesting exhibits
k. t.
Do not miss this fantastic place, if you have a chance to visit Glasgow. Thinking of Glasgow, thinking of Hunterian Museum
P. Y.
Ive been visiting here for more than 30 years and throughout this time it has continued evolving. An interesting informative experience all set within an amazing historic building and of course within the campus in the zoology building is the additional hunterian collection.
G. H.
Free entry, spent about an hour here.
L. F.
Very interesting and eclectic collection. Some of the medical samples are downright creepy.
i.
Can be seen inside of an hour. A bit awkward when you're the only one in there with the pacing security guards. Nice guide, though.

Great space with kids of interesting pictures with usual captions.

Very Interesting museum. The museum is split in multiple locations so be aware that this is only a small part of the Hunterian.
K. F.
Excellent collection of Macintosh interior furnishings from his house.
P. F.
Small but nice museum inside the University of Glasgow.
P. B.

It's interesting to see the reconstructed house but it's a shame that there isn't more of the original available.

This museum located in Glasgow is an amazing interactive multi-levelled exhibition of scientific findings and factual information about medical history, archaeology and other related topics. It's very interesting and the environment is also child-friendly.
