Reviews of Inveraray Jail

Really really enjoyed this museum, one of the best I’ve been to. The audio guides were great, and included with the ticket, and I loved how there were interactive parts, like trying out thumbscrews and hammocks. The lad on the front door accidentally did our ticket wrong, but refunded us and did it correctly, but this didn’t spoil our trip, very happy with the whole experience and would highly recommend to anyone visiting!!

A very interesting and enjoyable visit (suggest this and the Castle). The courtroom was clever and great fun sitting amongst the models. The two attendants were very chatty and great hosts, also keen to lock you in the outside cell!! Great time, thanks.

Over from Northern Ireland for a couch trip. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit this wee town. What can I say but absolutely stunning. The locals are all friendly. Please visit this town you will not be disappointed.
I didn’t want to leave

It wasn't the best weather outside so we went here. It was a good day. There's alot to see and it was really interesting. The staff were very nice and very knowledgeable. I got told that people like the audio version. Walking around with earphones in but I think a walk around with a person would be good. The workers knew there stuff and I think the guy that was working there was dying to tell us some of the history.

Being able to walk freely around the jail is a treat. Quite expensive admission , £27 for 2 adults but it was relatively well staffed with costumed guides around to answer any questions quite a small location but plenty to see. Audio tours aswell as a QR code, app guided tour.

A must see! Eye opening to the past justice system in Scotland, especially in Inveraray. The place was absolutely incredible. History comes to life with the audio guides, plaques, the mannequins and the personal stories. Hours could be spent at the place looking around, searching records, and reading information. Will definitely be back on our next trip!!

Fun hour or so spent here finding out all about jail time back in the 1800's! Some rooms were interactive (in the newer jail house) like the crank and the whipping table!! Staff were really informative and pleasant!!

What a delightful experience. Educational, enjoyable, and very well run. The staff were very helpful, and could not find fault in the whole visit. It certainly makes you realise just how we have moved onwards over the years. Not to spoil the experience for others, but we were pretty barbaric back in the day. Go see for yourselves….. Would definitely recommend.

While staying in Dunoon, around 45 minutes away, we decided to have a drive across to Inverary for the day, with 3 young boys of 10, 9 and 2, the jail was somewhere the eldest 2 wanted to visit. It worked out well because it was heavy rain that day and gave us somewhere to kill some time. It ended up being very interesting and we all enjoyed exploring all the different rooms, I wouldn't recommend for those who struggle with stairs or uneven floors, however we made it round with a small toddler, so those with young children will be fine, infact he enjoyed exploring all the rooms just as much as his big brothers! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area

Good historic Jail. Lots to see and read about the history of jails, and how they progressed and improved during the 1800s. Plus lots of details of the actual inmates and their lives.
Do pick up an Audio Guide at Reception with head phones. Using your phone without headphones is a bit annoying for others. Well worth the entrance fee. Allow an hour and a half at least. 😎👍
