Reviews of Kelvin Hall Open Collections
m.
Not been here for some time and the place has be refurbished since the last time I visited many years ago. The building is of course magnificent. I came here not for the sports but the museum collections.
Housed in the Kelvin Hall is a collection resulting from a partnership between the National Library of Scotland and other Glasgow museums. Kelvin Hall now provides a shared collections storage facility with public access called the Kevin Hall Open Collection.
So now housed in this one building are the National Library's digital and moving image collections, collections from the Hunterian and other Glasgow Museums. Nice place to to spend an afternoon of eclectic museum collections
M. L.
Great collection of different subject areas.
Really interesting time at the museum.
Thank you.
A. M.
This place is amazing. Coming here since last 6 years. Joined the gym few months ago. Its a amazing place but i think they do lack some equipment's, i.e.- skipping ropes etc. Despite that, a very nice clean place.
j. t.
Probably the only chance to see what was billed as the most complete 67 million year old t rex skeleton in the world, there was lots of interactive exhibits which my daughter enjoyed and there was lots of information about t rex 🦖, the entry fee was really steep, I paid £22 for me and my 6 year old daughter, £14 for an adult and £8 for a child, there was no free parking either
M. Ò.
Great gym very well kitted out especially for a council gym or any gym for that matter.
N. M.

Looks brilliant since the refurbishment. I Love how they have tried to mix culture and sport into this facility. I enjoy looking at the artifacts down the corridor as I go to work out. Staff have been great and the equipment top notch.

The Kelvin Halls Open Collection is an incredible combined open-access research and storage facility made possible through the partnership of Glasgow Museums, Glasgow University Hunterian Museum and the National Library of Scotland.
Housed in the lovingly refurbished Kelvin Hall, visitors are able to view the items from the Glasgow Museums' Collection and the Hunterian Collection which are not on display in the respective museums. The facility is also home to the National Library of Scotland's Digital Collections which include the entire Moving Image Archive and access to all digitised resource materials such as newspapers and maps, etc.
The Open Collections has good disabled access and a pretty decent cafe with views over the River Kelvin. A befitting inheritor to the much loved Transport Museum which used to be housed there (now re-branded as the Riverside Museum at its new home downstream the Kelvin where it meets the Clyde)!
5*****

M. G.
Amazing gym! Love it ( not going often ....i think as every body!🤣)
C. D.
Love this place, so happy it's reopened. All nice new equipment, and their phone app for booking classes is the proverbial chocolate ice cream on top. One thing, folk in the café could be friendlier. Other than that good place to take a class, lift some weights and or other... Best get signed up.
B. G.
Great gym for a workout and plenty of classes for all levels of fitness, the staff are very friendly and helpful
M. B.
Excellent! Very few folk and easy to socially distance and enjoy your workout!

A. T.
Brand new state of the art gym and fitness arena. Beautiful inside
C. M.
The best kitted out gym I've ever seen, if you like variety you'll love it. Also has a great functional fitness set up for body-weight exercises although the ceiling is too low for muscle-ups.
J. D.
Great place for the grandkids at the weekends. They love their shotokai karate class and the cafe is well catered
R. H.

Great facilities but can get a bit cramped at peak hours
G. W.
Great new facility especially for gymnastics the cafe is very priceybthough
B. “. T.
Great for fitness equipment and classes also has a coffee bar
J. F.
Huge venue with massive studios and gym. A little smokeless because of its size, but if it's for events then great venue.
M. K.
Great fun. A breath of fresh air for young kids. Sometimes hour is not enough :)
Z. H.
Good gym i would recommend but the music is not good and would get 5 star for better music for sure
T. Z.
One of the best gyms in Glasgow! Really good facilities, nice staff and great location!
E. S.
Good safety procedures in place. Friendly staff. Glad to be back!
T. W.
Great modern gym. Pity about the parking

J. B.
Great place for a workout the staff are really friendly and eager to help you with your training programs, you can have a lovely relaxing shower after your workout, they provide shower gel free of charge. The staff check the changing rooms on a regular basis and ensure that they are kept clean thus ensuring a pleasant experience for everybody.
T. A.
Nice place good exhibitions but the building is a bit rundown in some places.
J. H.
Great place for kids 3years - 10-year-olds
g. m.
i love this place, the National Library part is where I go. It's excellent and normally very quiet. It seems to me to be the West Ends best kept secret. I'm often in there on my own , apart from the 2 or 3 staff. I only go on Friday's so I can't speak for other days. The archive films which are accessible from numerous comfortable individual stations are brilliant. I've revisited my childhood numerous times. If you haven't been then GO, you won't be disappointed.
D. K.
After the hugely expensive overhaul I was expecting more. There is plenty of sports space (gymnasium, gym, dance studios) but I expected more museum 'stuff'.
C. B. (. N.
Go here for the baby gym (actually up to about 5 or 6 year olds) with my 3 year old. Been going about a year and it's really convienent as it's on multiple times a day. All the equipment is proper gym equipment that is either lowered or made accessible for the little ones and is a safe place for them to run round and try new things. Great for a bit of indoor exercise
S. “. K. A.
Very spacious reception and good lecture halls. Although the absence of desks in said lecture halls is a bother, the rest of the facilities are excellent.
t. m.
Great gym .. spacious.. and the staff are excellent
M. C.
Nice and modern gym. The climatization is a bit cold.
A. B.
The building was recently redeveloped and it is beautiful. It's modern without being alienating and it has a lot of old items on display in the corridors. It has a gym where you can book badminton courts and also a small lecture theatre.
B. M.
Very clean, big, and plenty of services. Painless experience in booking things and staff very helpful and friendly.
B. L.
Great staff and well maintained facilities
T. J.
great gym staff very helpful
K. m.
Beautiful area for dog walkers, couples and family days out when headed to the park.
W. H.
Great looking building with a very modern refurbishment done
M. C.
The renovation looks great and inside it has some nice small pieces of history/art for free to view. Unfortunately the old entrance on Argyll Street is very run down looking and its the first thing you see.
T. K.
Very friendly staff nice and clean badminton courts, not to forget the toilets. I have not use the gym area but assuming it must be nice too. The only structural problem is that this summer the courts were too hot for game. I am guessing the ventilation system in the basketball and badminton courts needs some attention for only that reason 4 stars otherwise would have given 5.
R. G.
A bit to sharp in ending your time at venue.
T. C.
Went for the t-rex. Was amazing to stand though and look around can still visualise where everything used to be when it was the transport museum. Still smells the same too. The event itself was for my son who loves dinosaurs so his joy today was on another level.
R. D.
nice but too expensive Trex exhibition, rest of the collection needs a thourough rethinking and upgrade, as it is not clear what it has on offer. Friendly staff.
S. M. (.
Modern venue with ample parking. The badminton courts are very good and highly recommended. Book in advance for weekend availability.
G. W.
Well equipped gym and well located
D. O.
Great looking facilities and the kids gymnastics is great.
K. C.
Has nice morning table tennis on a Tuesday 10am. Cool building to be in. :))
D. O.

E. H.
Excellent facility for fitness training.
G. B.
Ample space to play badminton basketball judo classes dance practice etc.
R. L.
G12 gymnastics and dance in the Kelvinhall. Granddaughter looking forward to going again, they are all really good with her and friendly.
K. T.
Thoroughly enjoyed T Rex exhibition. Plenty of hands on activities for all ages.
Д. В.
I visited today and the display was great they had all sorts of things.
A. H.
If only all the Glasgow Clubs were like this one. The range of free weights is extensive, something sadly lacking elsewhere.
W. S.
Nice club but no swimming pool and steam room
P. S.
Amazing to see the T-Rex. Only until 19th July there.
E. C.
Massive gym which means no queues to get on machines. Set in a lovely building and really well restored 👍🏼 By far my favourite gym in Glasgow.
K. R.
Excellent facility with good range of classes.
N. G.
Has been modernised to a great standard and we really enjoyed the classes that are on
T. C.
Had a Uni exam in here the other day. Hall was a good size. Bit of noise travelled in from nearby rooms though
A. N.
Nice gym, very cheap
S. L.
Wonderful reuse of a historic Glasgow building. Beautiful architecture combining old with new. Glasgow Club gyms offer great services for low prices.
M. G.
Helpful staff. Nice new facilities.
L. A.
Best gym to go to in Glasgow! BUT THE PARKING IS RIDICULOUSLY PRICED.
I pay a membership for the glasgow club and I am appalled at the price I have to pay so I can park my car and use the gym😡
_. (.
Fantastic gym and many classes!
y. C.
Big. Nice cafe. Free wifi
G. S.
A world class gym and a great range of fitness classes.
C. G.
Recently refurbished thanks to the commonwealth games of 2014. Have been a Glasgow club member for many years however only recently started doing a early morning class. Even at 6.30 in the morning I have found the staff to be friendly and approachable . Always clean and great range of equipment
G. S.
Clean gym with good equipment and classes
E. G.

b.

G. A.

J. R.
Easy access for everyone friendly helpful staff
D. S.
Fantastic gym and classes
A. P.
Huge building with a beautiful impressive facade. Provides a storyline of the building's history and a tiny fraction of the city's museum collections that are stored there.
A. W.
Love this gym so much
A. G.
The T Rex Exhibition and presentation and the interactive demos really interesting. The T Rex looks amazing
N. M.
Playgym - nice for kids from 1,5 and over
S. A.
Nice museum and has sports facilities
S. C.
I have a Glasgow club membership and come here often, there are classes on free with the membership almost all the time ! There is a wide range of equipment and a water dispenser which is very handy after a workout. Showers are always clean and staff are very helpful.
S. H.
We use the seminar rooms here for work meetings. Nowhere to sit and eat any food that is ordered.
J. M. R.
Attended a birthday party in the gymnastic hall. The equipment the kids had access to was absolutely superb but much as the two staff were friendly and helpful when approached, they did not venture from the sideline where they were chatting. It would have been great to have them more hands on to enhance the experience for the kids who were very young and (barring one or two) had no experience of this type of equipment. The children were also desperate for a drink and so it would be helpful to provide paper cups on order that they can use a water fountain. Don't get me wrong, it is a brilliant idea for a party but there is room for improvement organisationally.
T. K.
Great Sports facility.
W. F.
Went to the dinosaur exhibition great gift shop
j. k.
Only thing that lets this down is the parking come on Glasgow council your parking charges here are terrible
A. W.
Why does my gym not have this much stuff?!?!
I. “. W. B. S.
You've got to visit it great
A. C.
Excellent place not to crowded
M. H.
Great new facility in Glasgow. Library of Scottish. Room to view microfiche, documents films ect.
J. D.
Great experience for kids and Adults. This is a welcome addition to the list of activities for kids to do in Glasgow. We have done similar climbing activities in Center Pacs and this was just as fun. The space allocated for it has been used well. You book in advance so it's not over crowded. The staff where really helpful and friendly. It's right next to the soft play and cafe so there was something for the younger kids to do whole big brothers and sisters and climbing. You need to register your kids as glasgow club members before you go.
A. W.
Great gym for beginners weight lifting (at least that's the perspective I can speak from). Lots of cardio machines, stretching areas and what seems to be a crossfit area. Changing rooms are clean and provide communal and individual booths for changing. Individual shower cubicles, water pressure great, sometimes a bit hot, soap provided.
N. W. F.
Excellent venue, great facilities
M. O.
Fantastic space! Excellent legacy of the commonwealth games.
N. D.
Wide variety of in house sports activity available here. Badminton, table tennis, basketball etc along with gym and others
E. B.
Sports venue - nice and modern '18
C. C.
Great sports centre however be mindful of the parking facilities. If you park in the near Burnhouse car park the charges are all day every day. Particularly in the evenings, it's not unusual for the wardens to ticket cars between 19.45 - 20.15 in the evenings. As the car park is poorly lit and machines are not lit up at night it's difficult to notice. There is however a small notice placed at the entrance. So if you don't want a £30 parking fine at 7.40ish in the evening remember to pay the piper. Doesn't affect spaces on main road outside car park as they finish at 6.00pm. Also remember the whole area around there is a controlled zone so also be mindful of parking in any unmarked area's.
D. P.
**Reviewing for the temporary t-rex exhibition.
The exhibition held at the Kelvin Hall for Trix, the tyrannosaurus rex excavated in Montana, USA, was a triumph.
The specimen itself is absolutely phenomenal - one of the most complete of its kind in the world - and the supporting exhibits were also excellent.
A highly informative and interactive exhibition. Just wonderful.
J. B.
Very modern, good range of classes on offer
G. B. (. b. c.
The gym is a decent size with a nice selection of free weights including a couple power rack and 2 smith machines.
Lots of running machines, rowers and power watt bikes as well. Also a variety of l musclue isolation machines.
I mainly like it for the classes which are excellent.
A full gymnastics area which is outstanding. Even a class for adults once a week.
Slight downsides
Perhaps its just my bad luck but it always seems that when I visit there is dust on the floor and behind the machines.
It can get very busy so your not guarenteed a power rack or you might be weighting upto 30mins for one.
The TRX station with all the main pull up bars has been positioned below a very low section of roof so if you want to do anything like muscle ups then you just hit your head. So not any good if you enjoy Street Workout style of exercise. (A relativly small flaw as not many people are doing muscle ups here)
D.
Great all around facility.
C. M.
I've no actually been but it's probably alright

S. B.
Great sports hall for court sports
A. M. M.
Always something to see and do.
H. S.
Played badminton here. Facilities are a huge improvement from before. The flooring in the Scotstoun badminton academy is better. I'd recommend yellow shuttlecocks due to the ceiling lighting.
C. D.
Glasgow Stores for the Hunterian are held there. You need to submit a form and it weirdly takes about 6 weeks to access archives. The National Library archives are also held there but much easier to access
P. B.
The yoga studio is a but too small and lacking a mirror. Mats are worn.
K. A.
batminton courts are ok with flooring but dull lighting 🤪😧

If you are looking to achieve new goals and a healthier lifestyle start the journey here, the staff in kelvin hall are on hand for questions about your health, fitness levels, they can also tailor programmes to help you achieve your goals. The gym itself and all facilities are state of the art. I went in for a quick tour the boy at the desk was stuart he was absolutely lovely so friendly and helpful I signed up for my years membership there and then. I booked in to see Roury in the gym to start me off with a programme, everything was covered by him from my current health and fitness to the goals I would like to achieve, Roury has been absolutely fabolous very knowlageable and supportive. All the staff are the very same what a lovely, helpful, friendly team the kelvin hall has.

Only gripe is how they handle end of session. Started setting up metal sides for tennis/badminton on the court while play was still in progress. Very unsafe.

(Translated) Super sports and cultural center. Visit of the exhibition on Trix, the largest T-Rex in Europe, superbly preserved. Beyond the skeleton itself which fascinates, attractions all around, very playful and very interesting explanations. A great family time.
