Reviews of St. Mungo Museum Of Religious Life & Art
a. n.
One of my favorite experiences of Scotland. The museum is well maintained and pretty informative! The weeping angels made me chuckle!
K. P.
This museum has a collection of many religious artefacts from different religions.
m.
As the name of the museum suggests, the museum is very much focused on religious life and art. I half expected the focus to be on Christian art, but there example of art from all the world's major religions and well as less well known ones, including those from antiquity.
There's also a good sized cafe at the selling food and drinks at very reasonable prices by museum standards. The museum is absolutely worth visiting.
A. S.
I stumbled upon this museum after leaving the Glasgow Cathedral and what a wonderful surprise it was. You enter after walking by a Zen garden. It is much larger than it appears and is staffed by a lovely group of individuals. Admission is free, represents a wide selection of religions and has some good children’s activities. The view from the top floor is spectacular and a wonderful place to take a photo or two.
E. W.
I have always been interested in the different religions so I found this little museum engaging. They did a great job with the displays and artifacts to illustrate how different belief systems regulate ceremonies for birth, marriage, death and other lifetime rituals. It is well worth a visit if you are curious about rites of passage! (We had a short time here on a cruise ship for the day (docked in Greenock) - we did it on our own and fit in the Necropolis, Glasgow Cathedral, St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, Provand's Lordship, the HOHO bus, lunch at George Square and Rick Steves "Glasgow Walk" from his book.)
T. B.
Fantastic building build to blend in with style of oldest house in Glasgow and Glasgow surrounding buildings. the museum has cafe area selling teas, coffees, The museum llists history of Glasgow religions and the mixture of the different cultures that make Glasgow such a special place. well worth a visit and free entry.
I. F.
Near Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis, this lovely little museum is set on three floors. It includes history and artefacts of the main religions and is very interesting. It includes a shop, cafe and a beautiful, small Zen garden. One would need a deeper regard for religion than I to really appreciate it. Certainly, though, if in the area it's worth a visit. Note: Just across the street is the 'oldest house in Glasgow' (see pic).
J. G.
Great place for learning about religion! You can also get a great view of the glasgow cathedral from within here. I can't recommed enough as is free to visit but chances to donate if you like.
M. O.
Truly an enjoyable experience. Some amazing displays that I will remember forever. They do a great job of telling stories and giving different points of view on various religious.
R. L.
Simply loved it, it's small but full of really interesting facts and religions history. I personally learned a few things about religions that I had no idea. It's not focused on one religion but the 6 main ones are exposed, also some facts about minor religions and believes from all over the world.
Loved it! 😍
L. C.
Loved this place, there is alot to see and learn about. My favourite part was going to look at the buddha's.
E. E.
Small but insightful museum with interesting exhibits on the major religions.
A. D.
I didn’t love the curation, and honestly the cafe isn’t good for a building that recent. No admission fee, but they ask for a £3 donation. Honestly the highlight is the third floor window overlooking the cathedral and necropolis.

The St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art is a museum of religion in Glasgow, Scotland. It has been described as the only public museum in the world devoted solely to this subject, although other notable museums of this kind are the State Museum of the History of Religion in St. Petersburg and the Catharijneconvent in Utrecht.
The museum is located in Cathedral Square, on the lands of Glasgow Cathedral off High Street. It was constructed in 1989 on the site of a medieval castle-complex, the former residence of the bishops of Glasgow, parts of which can be seen inside the Cathedral and at the People's Palace, Glasgow. The museum building emulates the Scottish Baronial architectural style used for the former bishop's castle.
The museum opened in 1993.
Nearby are the Provand's Lordship (Glasgow's oldest house), the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and Glasgow Necropolis.
L. S.
I take this photo from the museum, it's super interesting, it has information about many religions and many pieces of art
M. T.
Nice building but closed
G.
Fascinating museum of all faiths and religions around the world, now and through history. The museum is bright, modern and very engaging. Great for adults and children equally. Highly recommended for people of any faith or indeed none. There is a lovely cafe here too that is convenient for anyone visiting the Cathedral, the Necropolis or the Provand's Lordship museum just across the road.
T. G. D. -. R. X.
A brilliant place and a fantastic idea for a museum especially considering the modern context. This Museum is dedicated to showing how different religions practice their faiths and there are overviews of what each faith is about. There is also a nice cafe downstairs and really friendly staff one of which me and my friend talked to for a good half hour. There are also tours too, the place is clean and is situated near Glasgow cathedral. I would encourage anybody to visit.
E. T.
Small but great museum about religions and spirituality. It's particularly well presented, with many objects/clothes/texts/pieces of art used to describe or pinpoint some aspects of the spiritual life of various groups of humans around the planet. The museum is free, very close to the cathedral, and also hosts a typically Scottish Zen garden (imagine a zen garden with weeds gently sprouting from the stones :-) and a nice café.
H. M.
Great museum not visited by many people now. Displays are dated and in need of a revamp. ALL Glasgow museums are free to enter so this one gives value for money...I always donate on entry...cafe is pricey and service slow. Next door cathedral and Provands lordship worth a visit too.
A. B.
Very, very kind staff and diverse, inclusive exhibits. I came in expecting mostly Christianity-related exhibits, but was pleasantly surprised by just how many religions were represented in art, culture, and history in the museum, and all in interesting ways. I would definitely go back if returning to Glasgow.
L. F.
I love visiting this Museum, however today was special as I went to see the Anne Frank exhibition. This was very sad and thought provoking. What a courageous young lady she was, as were all the brave people who did what they could to help others
B. C.
Very interesting museum - a good collection well presented, and full of great pieces.
A. G.
Friendly staff who gave a lot of information. Good that the museum had exhibits about lots of different religions rather than just one. There were lots of activities and interactive things for children.
A. W.
I read online that this was a good place to go and it is quite an impressive building in this historic part of Ye Olde World Glasgow, but there was simply nothing happening here except one room being used by a wedding reception. If the main event was closed to accommodate this wedding, they should make it known, even now I am not sure
R.
Beautiful cathedral, was interesting from a tourist standpoint while still remaining very spiritual and religious. Had lots of things to see as well as quiet areas for prayer.
P. S.
Neat little museum showing artifacts, their meanings and significance in various religious communities. If you have an interest in culture, religion, art or just want to get in from the cold then it's a recommended visit!
M. S.
For such a seemingly small museum- there's quite a lot to see! Even if you're not religious, this museum encompasses not just a wide range of global religions, but culture too. And, if you climb up all the way to the top, there's a wonderfully picturesque view of the Necropolis too!
I. G.
Didn't expect much when I went, but I was completely blown away. Very interesting exhibits from all over the world, you really get to learn about other cultures and religions. Ended up spending 3 hours, and will be going again! Highly recommended
L. C.
I stumbled upon this place on the way to the cathedral... the garden across the street caught my eye. The religion exhibit was very eye opening and I appreciated how they broke down the information into not overwhelming chunks so I didn’t zone out.
B. C.
The main exhibition hasn't changed much. The zen garden has fallen into disrepair. More faiths could be included. But it's great it exists. Something everyone should visit at least once.
A. M.
This is the best museum you could ask for, not at all what you might expect, and it’s connection with the very unusual Glasgow Cathedral and environs makes for a great day out.
A. W.
It's great that such a huge city holds so much for diversity and equality that it has its own wee museum upon the diversity of society, Glasgow, Scotland and the world. However VERY Christian oriented, I respect that as that is the main religion of the city, whereas I myself am a viking enthusiast, there was nothing about that era, I was however told where I could visit to get my viking lore fix :)
V. G.
Actually one of the most unbiased museums I have ever been to. Quite a neutral view on all major religions with a lot of exponents and interactive parts. Loved it!
A. L.
An interesting kind of museum! Very different from the usual. Don't forget to admire the view of Cathedral and Necropolis from the window in the last floor! Absolutely amazing!
C. B.
Not a huge museum, but it has some very interesting artifacts from the various main world religions. And best of all, like most Glasgow musuems, it's free. :)
I. P. (. S. M. T.
Intetesting, educating, pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed 'Angels around us' and other exibitions. And the museum shop has good, less standard selection.
G. M.
The museum isn't so interesting, the top level is worthless, the staff at the coffee was alright to us, but one other member of them wasn't that nice. They need mor items to see, but I give 3 stars because it was free.
C. R.
Lovely wee cafe with nice scones and cakes
J. D.
Very quirky and underrated museum and a must stop visit on any tour of the cathedral and necropolis area, themselves unmissable (maybe the cathedral is, necropolis is amazing).
Z. E.
I was so surprised by this place. Didn't expect this place to be that beautiful. Very interesting to learn about all the differences between the religions around the world. Enjoyed my visit very much. Thank you!
J. H.
I didn't get much out of most of the displays, but the information about the neighbouring Necropolis, in an upstairs room with a panoramic view towards the Necropolis and Cathedral, was interesting.
A. D.
What a delight! Lovely example of how the Scots lead the way toward real interculturalism and not the mess of British "multiculturalism." Interactive exhibits, great for kids!
P. W.
Interesting mix of displays on various religions. This is not just about St Mungo. It contrasts the various rituals and garments associated with the six major religions. This is an unusual display across the religions.
v.
Lovely museum next to the Cathedral and facing Glasgow's oldest house built in 1471 which is open to the public.
A. H.
Lovely building, superb museum and a great place to eat in the area. Also has a very good gift shop.
G. S.
There's an angel exhibition on at the moment, very up my street, we attended an arts workshop, so much fun we stayed til the end.
K. C.
Very good cafe for coffee or snacks. Open weekends. They have various exhibitions so worth a look if you have time.
L. V. D. D.
Fabulous place! Wish I could visit every day. Quiet, peaceful, informative. Super delightful. And of course, the staff is extremely friendly.
C. K.
A great wee museum with lots of fascinating information about many religions. Great displays in a beautiful building.
L. B.
Nice museum of all religions (Dali's "Christ of St. John of the Cross" is at the Kelvingrove Museum)!
E. W.
Fantastic place, very interesting, full of culture. The stained glass is amazing...you can enjoy this unrushed & for free.
J. J.
Interesting and fairly unusual museum covering different religions, but lacking in good comparison/insight to make it really stick
r. d.

Simplistic museum of religion, does a good job of being inclusive, but there's not much depth
M. D. V. E.
Unusual but worth a visit. Artifacts grouped by theme rather than by religion.
M. C.

One of the best places to visit in Glasgow for religious people. Different type of religions portraits are displayed here in this museum and providing a breif information and history about each of them. We don't need any pass or ticket to enter here. It's absolutely free. Staffs are very good.
K. M.
Worth visiting! If you think your religion is special, after visiting this magnificent museum, you will have a second opinion.
C. “. Y.
This place provided an insight into different religions of the world. Would recommend, even if you are not Christian.

This museum by St. Mungo's Church is well worth a visit, and there is said to be only one such museum in the world dedicated solely to the world's beliefs in life and art! A worth seeing mirror of the world religions on several floors. The beautiful colorful glowing church windows come from the Pre-Raphaelite Burne-Jones. But also the physical well-being is not neglected here: in the pretty cafeteria with comfortable terrace seats in the romantic inner courtyard. Toilet in the basement, disabled toilet on the ground floor. And all with free admission!
B. F. (.
(Translated) Very interesting, for believers or atheists. A great source of information. This gives a good idea of the diversity of beliefs. Beyond this demonstration, there is the idea of openness to others. Icing on the cake, admission is free, but a small gesture or a visit to the shop is welcome. I recommand it. 😁
