Reviews of Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum
M. H.
We had a fantastic visit to this museum. Parking is well signposted ( Gloucester Quays) and is a few minutes walk. The staff at the museum were friendly and it is a well laid out and informative experience. There’s a good mix of personal anecdotes with the bigger picture. There’s a fun dressing up section too, I never realised how heavy modern body armour was! Good fun and great value.
R. E.
A very warm welcome, with knowledgeable staff (volunteers). Ken and Bill told us some stories that were easy to listen to. Great value for the price. Leave yourself about an hour and a half to see everything. Cannot recommend it enough.
G. O.
A real gem. Tucked away on the quiet side of the Quays is this museum dedicated the Gloucestershire Regiment and their activities.
A lot of detail is packed into a very small space so it's worth budgeting at least an hour to go round an soak up the exhibits.
The feel of what it was like to be in a WW1 trench was particularly emotive.
Kids get an opportunity to dress up in military uniforms too.
Shop is small but we stocked. Staff are lovely and genuinely passionate about their work.
L.
Fantastic museum, good value for a family ticket. Children enjoyed the following their trail through the museum and collecting stickers. Excellent exhibitions, and knowledgeable volunteers. Highly recommend
A. K.
Loved the museum and so did the kids. Wonderfully laid out and offers something for both the adults as well as the kids. Parking nearby is possible but it's a nightmare. Entry prices are great and really reasonable with £10 for a family with 2 adults and 3 children. Lots to see and there are interactive computer screens available for the kids and the adults.
There is a dress up at the end and a gift shop as well so you will have a great time exploring the interesting history of the soldiers if Gloucestershire and their noble and varied history

I went with my son, aged 11, in early June 2022. His interest in all things military has been heightened by the recent events in Ukraine. The thing that made the price of admission value for money was the presence of highly engaging volunteers who spoke to us at length and explained the significance of particular objects in the collection. We had a wonderful conversation with the retired RAF man who pointed out some highlights to us. My son relished the opportunity to hold a variety of (deactivated) rifles. The volunteer showed them to us in historical chronological sequence, starting with the legendary Brown Bess musket and ending with the type of firearms carried by British infantry men towards the end of the Cold War. The experience gave my son the opportunity to get a bit of a sense of what carrying kit was like for successive generations of soldiers. Well worth the cost of travel.

Wonderful museum in the heart of the docks . The museum has many exhibits following hundreds of years of military history. The museum contains a shop and a cafe. The museum is also reasonably priced for families.
C. E.
A most interesting place for all ages that needs our support now that they no longer get Government funding. We need these museums so that our young people understand the history of war and the folk who fought them .
K. B.
Very informative with plenty to do for younger ones. Ideally situated for parking and for a picnic

On the 25th May 2019 I had booked a coach trip to visit Gloucester Tall Ships to be held in Gloucester Docks, a wonderful part of this City’s old and historic part. Gloucester use to be part of the old Mercia Region of Great Britain. Gloucester is a city and district in the county of Gloucestershire it lies in the South West of England, of which it is the county town. Gloucester lies close to the Welsh border, on the River Severn, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the southwest. The country's most inland port has seen a regeneration program in the last decade, more visibly at the city's historic docks. It was in 1963 when I visited this beautiful City while I was in the Royal Navy and stayed with my best friend at the time we visited Cookes Cafe in Westgate Street with all his friends.
Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, Custom House the Docks, 31 Commercial road, Gloucester GL1 2HE. I returned to this area of Gloucester on another visit on the 2nd August 2019. It was certainly less busy after my visit on the 25th May 2019 when the Tall Ships event was in full swing. This museum’s staff were very courteous and helpful. They had a small cafe area outside the Museum itself with tables outside which was pleasant enough on this very hot and sunny day. It was a bit hot inside under the glassed area. Inside the Museum itself were arranged in small rooms too small really to be able to take decent photos and videos. But that’s how it was it was an old warehouse and they made best use of what they had. The displays were arranged with thought for what was not really a very large museum but was certainly worth the money of Senior Citizen rate of £4.00. I thought this was a fair price to pay for what was on display. There were a number of floors to wander around on and it was well documented as you took the time to stroll around, for those that liked to read the history of the display settings.
National Waterways Museum Gloucester, Llanthony Warehouse, Gloucester GL1 2EH. I visited this Museum on Friday the 2nd August 2019. It looked impressive from the outside. Even Reception looked welcoming. Then the facia was laid open. The staff on reception were ok they explained the tickets purchased were for a whole years return visit. I would not want ( at the moment ) any return visit to this boring and hotch potch museum. I was told there were three floors of exhibits. But the second floor could only be visited by using the lift the stairs were being repaired. Fair enough you might add. But when you got to the second floor. There was nothing really worth seeing. Mainly items for kids to play on, which in itself was ok if there was enough to see otherwise. There was not. It was very disappointing what was there to see on this floor. The first two floors were ok but when you stood back and looked around there was not that much to really occupy you spending much time here. I can understand they may well be still putting together this museum. But the charge of £7.50 was way too high for what was on display at that time. It was really a total let down for me after the effort to return to this beautiful part of Gloucester docks and Quays. It was refreshing to be able to walk round after my visit on the 25th May 2019 while the Tall Ships display was on. This part of Gloucester is worth the visit on its own though and this museum is situated in a beautiful area of the Gloucester Docks.
Finally ending up at a newly acquired cafe called Brimbles Cafe in Westgate Street near St Nicholas' Church end and directly opposite the Gloucester Town Hall. This was a lovely little cafe that served great snacks and the staff were equally great. There was a very attractive floral display you could sit enclosed in to enjoy your coffee.

Very interesting,well documented museum,fantastic history.
J. N.
Detailed history. Large inventory. Well presented displays.
P. R.
Enjoyed learning more about the history these regiments particularly the Battle of Imjin
s. p.
Great museum very informative and helpful staff.
G. A.
Ideal to learn just a little more about the brave soldiers and the history they helped to shape. Very good museum.
T. A.
Not allowed to open inside until approx 17 May, but worth the wait. Books etc online and volunteers cleaning tables etc outside ready for when cafe opens. Great views of Victoria Dock & variety of moored boats.
l. g.
Quite a small museum, not many things in there but what they had was interesting, didn’t take too long to walk around. If you need a small actuation to fill a gap then this would do nicely.
R. S.
Very good museum to visit. Well recommended
D. A.
Having served in the Gloster it was great to look back at the regiments history.
R. S.
Nice little museum, the kids liked the costume area and made medals in the activity tent (only on Wednesdays). Very polite staff in the cafe area.
B. H.
Really interesting histories of the County Regiments.
Interesting shop selling, badges, books, memorabilia.
Well worth an hour of your time.

I visited here with my little lad. We got a great groupon offer which made this a cheap day out. It was great to pass the time with and my lad enjoyed looking at the the machine guns and soldiers outfits. The spy trail was fab and interactive and he loved the prizes at the end. Easy to get to and a little gem to pass the time. Its not overly big but we spent good hour or so here
M. W.
My Husband and our 7 year old Daughter absolutely love this Museum. It's in a lovely spot too, so that's good for me!
T. W.
Great little museum. Genuinely tries (and succeeds) in engaging all ages. Interactive screens, kids can dress up in uniform, and well thought out displays. Needs more people to go there as was very quiet when we went.
G. C.
£4 for an adult £2 for a child. Good value small museum. Has some modern computer based interactive exhibits that has written explanations for older ones, with learning based games for younger ones. We spent longer that I realised with my 8 year old but had to rush off. Allow 1 - 2 hours depending on how much you like to read the descriptions.
L. L.
I visited on a particularly busy day when the tall ships were in the docks so struggled to move around and read all the exhibits. Iris quite cramped in there, full of information on the various wars the country has taken part in over the years and the involvement locally. They now have some really good interactive exhibits such as kit of present day soldiers which you can feel just how heavy it is!
F. A.
SOGM is a small charity run museum that focuses on those British regiments most closely associated with Gloucestershire i.e. the Gloucestershire Regiment (The Glorious Glosters) and the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. It is, unfortunately, located in a fairly remote part of Gloucester Docks compared to the Quays shopping centre; however, it's static displays are well organised with many interactive screens. The Korean Room mostly focusses on the 1951 battle of Hill 275 above the Imjin River. A battle that cost the Chinese 63rd Army more than 7000 losses
M. S.
Fascinating history of the Regiment. Interactive information screens and a dressing up area with games. Very useful folding stools available. Friendly staff, lovely hot chocolate in Cafe and well stocked shop.
R. S.
I visited properly for the first time today and was most impressed, we were given an excellent guided tour by Andy and enjoyed a cream tea afterwards. This museum should NOT be missed by anyone with an interest in Gloucester - not just the military. Some poignant
G. C.
Brilliant museum and friendly staff
D. P.
A good day out for all the family 👪
A. T.
Five stars if you are into history. Still well worth a visit anyway. Very good exhibits, recreations. Very informative. Very close to the Quays shopping centre. Quite accessible.
J. N.
Very informative, from the beginning of the regiment to the present day. Interactive panels to delight and inform for young and old alike. Well done to all involved, highly recommend a visit when visiting Gloucester docks
R. W.
We very much enjoyed the museum. It was so informative and the depictions of soldier's lives made the history come to life. Very well put together and the hosts were very helpful and friendly. Thank you so much.
P. W.
More battle honours than the Guards regiments. A fascinating experience, learn about the regiments and colourful characters, officers and foot soldiers who fought for our nation. Situated on Gloucester docks, close to the Cathedral, City centre and the Quays. Comes complete with a cafe and close to many and varied restaurants,
M. V.
A journey through time. All staff are volunteers. Visitors keep the museum open. Lots to see inside.
A. T.
Amazing to see so much of the history and a celebration of what makes Britain great. Such bravery from these soldiers deserves wide circulation these days
M. T.
Great place to visit. Needs a bit more bringing up-to-date but I presume that is work in progress. This is a local museum supported by local people and should be supported by visitors to Gloucester.
R. M.
A great museum! For me personally, the countless examples of bravery depicted made it a great experience.
S. H.
Ordered 5 sweet boxes for family, quick delivery and enjoyed by all. So good to have such a brilliant service throughout these difficult times. Thank you 😊
M. S.
Interesting couple of hours spent here
C. S.
Fantastic!, If you like Military History this place is definitely for you, There is so much to see that you might need another visit, I cannot recomend this Museum highly enough, Go and see The Glorious Glousters for yourself you'll not be disappointed.
M. C.
Difficulty with accessibility with a mobility scooter - some sharp corners to turn and lift very small. Other than that, the museum it's is brilliant.
J. L.
Enjoyable and educational. Fun if your children like dressing up.
M. H.
Very interesting but not very much for kids except the dressing up at the end. Lots of artefacts and excellent curated content but more interesting to adults who want to stop and read
C. H.
Brilliant museum and preserving local history of the Glosters is imperative
K. K.

(Translated) The history of the British military was introduced from the Middle Ages to the present day. It was difficult to understand because there were many words I didn't know, but it was an interesting exhibit for me personally.
