Reviews of Ipswich Museum
d. e.
Free day out so get there before it shuts in August for renovation. Check the website for activity days during summer hols. I was surprised by the range of animals including a mammoth and giraffe. Some fascinating information about Ipswich and surrounding areas. Worth a day there and you really don't get anything for free today so you have nothing to lose. We loved it!

This place is a hidden gem. Never been before and lived here for years. Went on Saturday around 11am. It wasn't too busy which I loved as I suffer with anxiety and being around crowds. Going into the museum your greeted with a welcome desk, a lovely little shop and a view of the museum infront of you. The staff are absolutely lovely and really helpful.
Me and my partner wandered around for a couple of hours! I was shocked by how big the place was. So many interesting bits of information.
I took quite a few pictures although it was hard to take some due to reflections and light.
This place has a lot to offer. Very informative and fun things to look at.
I read previous reviews which only gave a few stars and they are absolutely embarrasing. Someone leaving a review saying they fell down the stairs and the place is a bit run down?. What?
The whole of the museum was clean and tidy and very well looked after. The toilets were tidy and clean and even the gift shop looked pleasing.
A few more people did come in as time went on, but it's spacious enough to let people past without being too close.
This museum really was lovely to walk around and I will definitely go back!.

What an amazing gem hidden in Ipswich.
So many amazing exhibits with so much interactivity for the children.
Most definitely worth a trip to.
And it was free to go Into.

Great old fashioned museum with a real variety of displays but particularly eild animals and birds. There was also a great film on Sutton hoo and a display of a horde if gold coins found in 2008 dating back to Beaudicea. This was a temporary exhibit I think.
B. K.
Nice museum not big but enough for spending good time and knowledge about anglo sakson culture. Not forget trial map for kids. Clean atmosphere and helpful workers

Family visit. Very enjoyable with interesting exhibits. We loved the place and the staff were very helpful.

2021: So much has changed since I last visited, approx 2012. It has all been suitably updated and appears modern (as far as a museum can seem modern) and clean. The displays are engaging.
The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. They said we could take as many photos as we liked as long as we didn't use flash. We spent ages in the first big hall with all the animals in. We enjoy going to the zoo, but to see a giraffe, gorillas, wolves, zebras and other animals we see at the zoo, so close, was very intriguing for my children (4 and 6). We used the little magazine they sell for 50p and got a 50p pencil too. My 6 year old enjoyed searching for the animals inside and ticking them off.
All of the artefacts are genuine and the animals are all real animals, beautifully taxidermied (except for the giant mammoth - which a staff member told me has the same hair that Chewbacca has in Star Wars).
The punishment chairs for whipping and dunking were rather disturbing to my children and couldn't be avoided as were on the main route. My only suggestion for improvement would be to have this disturbing area to one side in an offset room with a warning label to parents that children may find it disturbing (so they can choose to avoid it)
We spent an hour inside and hadn't finished but it was closing time. The staff used an old police rattle to alert us that it was time to leave. I liked that touch.
Well worth a visit!!

Great displays. A proper museum experience. They have taken every protection against covid and have closed a few displays due to tight spaces but still LOADS to see and interact with. Wish I had taken the receptionists name as she was SO friendly with the kids and a real credit to Ipswich museum. Great shop with a good range of priced items to suit most pockets. We will go again.
O. T.
Simply WOW) So wide collection from different parts of the world and centuries. Free entrance also was ready to pay cause felt really impressed) Very nice staff. Thanks a lot!!!)
R. S.
Lovely place to spend a phew hours, history of Ipswich and Egyptian section was fascinating

Nostalgic visit to Ipswich Museum before it soon closes for refurbishment. Please be mindful of the unique atmosphere of this place in the refurbishment. It would be a shame to loose the charm of the place. It's a museum, showcasing history, there must be a good case for keeping at least some of it that way. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
g.
Wonderful Victorian building with an interesting collection. I hope they do not ruin the special atmosphere it has when it closes for renovations in the autumn.
They have many exhibits to enjoy - the giraffe in an enormous glass case is really extraordinary!
S. J.
A beautiful little Victorian old style Museum! Well organised with lots if culture captured around with some really old artifacts! What I found interesting was the thousands year old tribal group information! One of which stretched from Suffolk to Cambridge to where my great Grandmother was born! Oh!.....and the Gift Shop had adorable Dinosaur teddies and other really well selected Gifts!
M. M.
A fabulous place for both adults and children to visit and learn together. Staff very helpful.A variety of things for children to take part in, like dressing up for different eras to using their imagination sitting round a camp fire in prehistoric times. There is no time limit on how long your visit lasts. An amazing place and free to get in. There is also a small gift shop with a good range of items to choose from. Will definitely be visiting with my family again.
T. G.
Free entry to the museum and the gift shop is really reasonably priced
A. H.
Always a good experience and full of history locally and further afield. I've been before and went again with my son before it's expected to close around October for an extension to be put in and a large scale refreshment of the site. I would recommend a visit, the staff display a positive and friendly atmosphere and it's full of all sorts of history.
N. B.
As we knew the museum is closing for 2-3 years whilst they redevelop it and update it, we had to visit one last time and experience it as we have always known it. The staff were so lovely and they shared all the development plans which anyone can see and I have to say that they look amazing. We will miss the museum over the next few years but we will look forward to when they open again.
P. A.
Fantastic collection of such a huge variety of items! We love Ipswich Museum, and the staff are really friendly. Really hope the redesign goes well, and look forward to being able to return when it's complete.
O. S.
Wonderful museum, to me it is a must when visiting Ipswich . And it was free admission, thanks and well-done Council!
A. M.
What a perfect Victorian Museum, stunning natural history exhibits... To see them, go soon, this unique and extraordinary series of exhibits may be closing for good soon... Don't miss it, you won't regret visiting.
B. S.
It's a good museum to see if you are near by. But I don't think it's something to visit for a whole day. The museum has lots of stuffed animals and a first world war section. It's an alright place.
D. C.
Our 6yo absolutely loved his visit this summer holiday and so much to look at and interact with. Be aware that we were told they'll be closing for an extended time from some time in Sept this year for a referb
A. W.
Brilliant Museum, this must be the very best Natural History Gallery and Bird Collection in the country I'm sure! Find something different every time I go, can't wait to visit again.
O. L.
I fully enjoyed the museum. It took more than two hours to have a cursory look of all the exhibit and rough reading of all the descriptions.
Quite disappointing with the temporary close of the gallery next door.
R. P.
Didnt expect it to have so many and realistic exhibits. Kids loved it and spent a good 2 hours there.
A must see if you are in the area and its free!
c. n.
My 13 year old enjoyed as much as I did. Worth a visit
L. J.
Me and my Daughter had the best time looking around at all their exhibits. They have alot of interactive activities for children to do and learn
S. M.
A nice old-fashioned museum, but about to be closed for "refurbishment". I suspect this will result in it being turned into an attraction for children at the expense of providing exhibits for serious viewing.
B. W.
Free entry no need to pre book
P. H.
love visiting this museum the staff are always pleased to see you are very keen to talk about the exhibits , its a wonderful place to visit my children loved it and now my grandchildren love it
e. e.
I visited the museum for the first time in 2019. To be honest I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Especially liked the Egyptian mummy's, very well presented. Definitely worth a look if you're in the area.
A. S.
I can't believe we've never been to this museum before! We've had a fantastic time exploring this museum today. There are so many different things to see in here.. From Great Mammoth to items of war, ships, animals from around the world to Ed Sheeran! Its unbelieveable what you discover in here. My 15 & 11 years old children were not very happy when I told them we're going to a museum but I think they've enjoyed their time in there too. 2 hours of exploration would've been easy but unfortunately, we got hungry & had to leave after just over an hour. I would definitely like to return when we visit Ipswich again. & without a doubt will be encouraging people to go & have a look at this gem of a place! By the way, its free entrance which is a bonus. But you can of course put a donation into their box so they can keep this place mantained & going for everyone to enjoy.
H. A. (.
Went with my daughter on a school trip. They had amazing items on show. I didnt even know the museum was there. It's free admission and the gifts at the gift shop were very reasonably priced. Gemstones, soft toys and Egyptian themed items. There was 2 mummys and 2 sarcophagus on display. Sea life fossils and there were alot of exhibits covering thousands of years. If you are in the area, definitely go and have a look. Easy and cheap parking, £1 an hour, max 5 hours. Search "Fitzroy Street, Ipswich", as the car park postcode isnt accurate. Friendly staff and were welcoming of my daughter who has ASD. Drink available but food is not. However the town is literally 2 minute walk from the museum. PS...I'm not a museum kind of person and I enjoyed the day there.
J. M.
A great place to visit with family or with children.
This museum combines exhibitions of the Natural History, exhibiting several species of animals preserved by scientists in Victorian times. Most striking and attracting attention is a preserved mammoth welcoming visitors at the museum’s entrance.
Additionally, the Ipswich museum contains several interesting skeletons, such as a head of a whale, hanging below a room’s ceiling or the one of a boa constrictor.
Several other exhibitions enrich Museum’s offer. They include the history of the Two World Wars. Some rooms depict quite realistically the barracks, gas masks, rockets, bunkers, sand pits and many other war essentials. Also, visitors can see information about the Polish legions and the allies who fought the enemies with Britain.
There is an interesting section about East Anglia and early settlements in Ipswich. The exhibition mentions Boudicca who fought the Romans in East Anglia in the First Century AD.
Additionally, there is a vast section that mentions impact of the Puritans who have been quite prominent in the Ipswich area around the 16th and the 17th centuries.
Finally, the museum contains a selection of exhibitions from other cultures. They include African art and culture, Egyptian history and explanation of the mummification process, Buddhism and Islam’s essentials and many others.

Yesterday, we took our Year 3 classes to Ipswich Museum to experience the Ancient Egyptian workshop with Tim and Ed. What a brilliant day! Throughout the day, the children got to handle Egyptian artefacts, create a clay shabti and re-enact the journey through the afterlife of Lady Thathor. Tim and Ed were incredibly knowledgeable and fantastic with the children, answering a range of questions and supporting them to develop their knowledge. We are excited to hear about the redevelopment and look forward to returning for school workshops in the future.
K. W.
Lovely museum with lots for everybody. We'll worth a visit. A must for Sutton Hoo aficionados.
K. N.
Loved it. plenty of activities for younger kids. Exhibitions provide a depth of fascinating historical knowledge of both the local area, as well as a broader but more general insight into history of different cultures around the world.
f.
Loads to see, open during Tier 2. Make a reservation online, its free. Takes about 2 hours to see everything. 3-4 hours if you stopped at every exhibit and read each one in its entirety.
M. S.
Great victorian era museum, housed in an amazing building. Lots to see and perfect for a raining day. A hidden gem
P. F.
A pleasant return after many years and I can safely say not a lot has changed. With that said, for Ipswich it's a great time filling attraction that with cost you nothing unless you feel like donating. It hosts a heavy selection of preserved animals, Egyptian culture and WW1 history areas. Well worth a visit, but could use an update.
A. P.
Kids loved the experience of walking around and asking questions and looking at every thing from different cultures .they want to go again already
P. B.
Superb place to visit and gain knowledge about the history of Ipswich and Suffolk along with the connection it had and is having with the world. The animals look very real and that is highly appreciated.
Highly appreciative of the management who are maintaining the museum and the artifacts very nicely. Happy to visit the place again.
C. W.
Brilliant little museum. Evokes the Victorian museum whilst being dull of loads of interesting stuff
G. B.
My brother visited me today so I took him to the museum. I haven't been since before Covid. He was very impressed with the layout, and all the exhibits. He was amazed that it was free entry too. Well done, and thank you all staff, and volunteers.
D. M.
Ipswich museum is a really surprising place. The collections the really are worth seeing, especially the woolly mammoth.

Simply brilliant... I loved it.
It's free which is a bonus if you are a large family, the staff were great and friendly.
So you entre and to the right is a gift shop selling all sorts, and the toilets next to this.
But then... You entre and.... There's an enormous wooly mammoth!!!! I don't think they even had one at the natural history museum in London. Then there are loads of other stuffed animals....LOADS.. the place just goes on and on, there's Romans, Saxons, Egyptians, Indian, Buddha... And on and on...there's the war.... There's the navy... There's coins...there's guns.. there's EVERYTHING....it's amazing. And did I mention that it's free!!!
Take the kids, take the partner, take your mother-in-law! Just go there.
Even the drinks are cheap!!
Yep I liked this place. Full 5***** well earnt.
S. F.
Excellent place. Perfect for a visit on a rainy day. Staff were friendly and welcoming
L. H.
Absolutely fabulous museum! Wonderfully old fashioned. Stuffed animals&birds, social histories, geology, historical displays, shop. Amazingly it's all for free, a hidden gem! Well done Ipswich Council. York Council should take a leaf out of your book!!
P. C.
Great old fashioned style museum. Hundreds of stuffed animals, fossils, models etc. Lots of information and things for children to do. Nice little shop. Toilets available and a soft drink vending machine.
P. A.
Super little museum packed full of interesting exhibits. A great way to pass a couple of hours. Highly recommended and free !
J. R.
A free museum that holds so much more than the story of Ipswich.
This is a deceptively large museum. You enter to see the large mammoth and vast collection of stuffed animals, bequeathed by the Hervey family, which is cool. Only in small letters does it tell you there were Mammoths in Suffolk. Wow, that's cool - but make a bigger deal of it!
The history of Ipswich is around the walls of the gallery upstairs which charts many elements I never knew about.
Walk through the back and you will discover rooms dedicated to Ipswich during the war, and then more historical stuff like the Romans and the old tribes of the town. There are plenty of exhibits and opportunities for engagement with young visitors.
There is a massive gold hoarde here, which we could well have missed.
We've lived in the county for 20 years and never been. There was so much to take in here that we will be going back soon.
D. B.
I visited Ipswich museum on 06/12/18, I have to admit I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the museum is, especially as it is all FREE! From the outside it doesn't look like there will be much to see inside, but we took 3 hours to go round the exhibits and to be honest I could have spent longer. The animals are bird exhibits are superb, especially a full size woolly mammoth. The local history section was great too as well as all the other parts of the museum. Nice little shop too, it would only be bettered if there was a cafe, or at least a tea and coffee machine.
E.
natural history part was fascinating and visually great. good world war 2 and local history. not so sure on the world history part - not sure those objects belong in Ipswich!
M. C.
A surprisingly enjoyable visit. Generally I do not enjoy museum visits, as I find them quiet dull and boring. This was quiet an interesting museum, with many large stuffed animals, both free standing and in large glass cases. Some extinct, and some still living .
Many different types of birds with explnations of their migratory patterns and current day status. Children were given some type of colouring / drawing book, with which to fill out when they spotted the animals in the museum. So it's a good way to keep them interested and involved.
An Egyptian room, featuring Sphnix like caskets, some over 3000 years, and many other Egyptian artifacts was certainly interesting. Not something one comes across every day.
Look out for the large woolly mammoth just inside the entrance, and a large giraffe close by. An interesting, and entertaining day for both adults and children, and it's free to enter.
A. M.
If u got couple spare hrs would highly recommend
A. W.
Had a great visit ,hadn't been for a few years. Amazing animals and enjoyed the world War 2 exhibits.
L. A.
Although a small museum it really does well at focussing it's exhibitions. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.... Well worth a visit if you are in the area!
H. R.
What a gem of a place. Well worth a visit. Lots to see and perfectly arranged. Can't wait to come back
A. S.
This is an amazing place to learn and to be wowed. Great place for children and adults.
R. S.
Refreshing spot for weekend
M. &. M. S.
Amazing museum, multitude of artefacts along with history of Ipswich. Incredible collection for such a relatively small building.
A. P.
The latest in a series of visits with my Grandaughter who loves this great little Museum
Question 3 below is non applicable as the museum entry is free of charge
C. H.
A wonderful display, you have to see it to believe it. Staff are very helpful, fully accessible and one wheelchair available.
H. W.
This was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours and my little boy really enjoyed it. The volunteers really made it a special visit. Taking their time to talk to my little man and although he was nervous of the big animals to start they explained everything to him and he ended up taking them round and showing them the animals. It really was surprising all this lays in the building and so close to town. The only suggestions I have are a small cafe? Maybe brighter lighting in the main hall. It is dark and although for an adult it is atmospheric for small children it can make it scary I guess.
All in all 10/10. Thank you we had a lovely time and we will be back.
a. b.
Children & adults alike love the historical feel of the museum
E. M.
Very friendly staff and there is a lot to see. Also surprising that the gift shop is very reasonably priced.
W. S.
Kids will love this free musuem and very educational for them. Adults will also find it intriguing too.
K. H.
I visited the Museum with my grandsons who loved it. My eldest grandson is interested in Mummies so he was delighted to be able to see it.
H. D.
Excellent museum. We are from Nottingham and not short on museums but - this museum took me back to my childhood. Wonderful and varied exhibits. No parred down child friendly, woke or perceived pc style interactive exhibits here, just history clearly and perfectly presented . We noticed several school groups, engaged with enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. Several under five children struck quiet and totally fascinated by the wonderful exhibits. This museum surpasses Wollaton hall, for its taxidermy, and Nottingham Castle for its historical clarity. I understand it is closing for a refurb, please don’t change perfection. This glorious museum is exactly what it should be - accessible, educational and wonderful.
N. C.
Great hidden gem, free entry
O. B.
Amazing natural history museum. Great for kids education and much more ethical then a zoo in my opinion. Definitely worth a visit.
F. W.
Excellent place to kill an hour and it's free. Grandson is 2 and loved all the animals the most....he was a bit young for anything else.
M. “. M.
Staff are super friendly and kind and helpful great place I took 5 children aged 4yrs,5yrs, 9yrs ,11yrs,13year old even he enjoyed it, absolutely mind blowing but great fun
K. E.
Fantastic family day out. Excellent experience.
C. O.
Excellent museum and free has some really interesting things to look at.
J. B.
What a hidden gem! Lived in Ipswich for 13 years and never knew about this place until recently. Had a short visit, thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely return. The first room has a wow factor with a life-sized mammoth! Whole place is well kept and organised. Reception/gift shop staff were very friendly too!
c. j.
Nice place to go to with family. My boys lives it here. Especially the mummy
C. F.
So much to see. Really interesting displays.
V. l.
Really lovely staff and very helpful. Our daughter was really disappointed to find the ww2 section was closed, such an important and integral part of our history and her favourite part of the museum. Very thankful to the staff who let us have a look around it anyway after seeing the disappointment on her face. Let's hope the reopen it soon so we can continue teaching our children the importance of the war years and how Britain pulled together as one.
M. C.
I have visited this museum since I was a boy and have always been fascinated by the bird collection upstairs. The quality of the exhibits is superb and remain unchanged for all the years that they are. It's a sobering thought that these brilliant specimens will still be looking good long after their custodians have perished!
Postscript: with the announcement of a refurbishment of the museum today, (1st September 2022) lasting until 2025, I can only hope it's not going to be turned into a coffee shop like they did to the Gainsborough Library. Incidentally, Having filled in a survey some time ago regarding the idea of a revamped museum, no one had the decency to give any feedback as to what the actual proposals are, or what the public opinion is!
A. C.
Really friendly staff, loads of taxidermy animals (lots of birds upstairs) good history of the area.
D. H.
An old fashioned museum with too much taxidermy for my taste...
T. C.
Such a great, free attraction showcasing some amazing natural history and local stories for all ages. Take the time to wonder around some fantastic displays and learn more about Ipswich. The only down side was I needed more seats to rest on. A must see attraction!
k. B.
Was here on an educational school trip with my sons class, it was really good fun and I learnt lots too, it's 100% worth a visit.
B. R.
One of those uniquely random dusty town museums that are a bit of a rarity nowadays. Full of strange and wonderful items around every corner. Perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon. Only thing missing is a cafe for a nice cup of tea after the visit!
J. W.
Was a lovely place and good with the one way system. Was a good free activity when exploring Ipswich
D. N.
I had an amazing visit here! There was so much to see, and the volunteers were the some of the most kind and open people I've met. You can tell they truly care about the exhibit, and they went above and beyond to make you feel welcome and included.
R.
Been quite a few times with the kids over the years, they enjoy it, not very big but worth a visit if in the area, we live in Ipswich so it’s easy, wouldn’t travel far to visit it. But worth a look if you have a spare hour or on those rainy days. Old traditional museum.
L. E. E.
An amazing museum really worth a visit.. free entry also.. parking at crown pools is only a couple of streets away..
A. W. C.
Really enjoyed learning more about Ipswich and seeing all the artefacts and learning more about history. Free museum definitely worth visiting, can spend good few hours looking around and reading descriptions on everything.
A. B.
Interesting place to visit, with various collections and the History of Ipswich.
C. J.
This is an old fashioned museum with typical Victorian stuffed animal exhibits. The main hall is gloomy which can be quite frightening for young children. Lots of other varied displays such as the Egyptian hall and the history of Ipswich. Helpful staff.
k. f.
Fantastic what a gem . And free.............
Return visit discovered even more rooms full of exhibits . Love it
A. P.
Such an interesting place to visit if ever you come to ipswich
d.
Great day out for the family, we all enjoyed it.
V. C.
Great information to read. Brilliant geology section. Art too. Animals which the Victorians stuffed, including giraffe, Rhino false horn because someone stole it ! , Lots of stuffed birds. Angelo Saxon history. On balcony the history of Ipswich is explained.
Gift shop. Friendly staff. Loft for disabled wheel chair friendly.
B. S.
Well worth a visit before they close for the revamp in September.
A. H.
Great time had by all. A one way system has been put in place and this actually makes it easier to get round and not miss bits! Well worth paying the 50p each for the spot the animals or moon question sheets but take a pencil. You can buy pencils for 50p if you forget though.
R. M.
I have visited many museums in England and abroad. Ipswich museum is still one of the best.
C. M.
Good city museum with a nice range exhibits, particularly wildlife and local history/archaeology. However, if you're squeamish about taxidermy animals or ethically disagree with exhibiting them, you might want to avoid this one as there is a large amount of them. The one way system employed is probably the best they could do with the layout of the building, but it does cut off a few of the exhibits from visitors. I found the local archaeology and geology exhibits particularly interesting. Overall, the visit was a good experience and I might visit again if I find myself in Ipswich.
R. M.
It's a nice free museum to visit. It focuses on a wide variety of history from the ice age, to animal species and different historical aspects from various cultures.
Parking isn't too far away either.
R. W.
Always worth a visit. See it now before it's modernised. So many fascinating exhibits.
C. B.
Kids enjoyed it and so did I my favourite had to be the mammoth it was amazing
K. C.
Great place to spend a couple of hours! My five year old was fascinated by everything and really enjoyed all the animals.
P. M.
Amazing venue for all ages. So much to see and learn. Lots of local history and amazing displays throughout.
P. D.
An historical natural history museum that was interesting and especially entertaining for all ages.
A. H.
Fun and educational to visit. A great day out with kids. It's free as well, however, you can give donations. Everything was so interesting to look at and you can learn alot about history and culture
J. L.
Our grandchildren really enjoyed it here. They especially liked the interactive displays
R. P.
Brilliant free museum. Loads to see and tons of local history inside. Well worth a visit. We spent nearly 2 hours here and the kids loved it
l. n.
Great old fashioned museum, like going back in time
P. M.
Bit of a rushed visit. Grandson with us. Bought him some jem stones.
e. k.
Interesting local history section (though most of it is unfortunately roped off). Children will probably enjoy the multitude of animals and replicas.
J. W.
The museum is free, and the content is worth looking at, what could be better than that?
The mammoth has a daft name based on a rapper, Wool-I-Am which I'm not sure in heaven I know what they were thinking as it's a dead stuffed animal, if it already had a name and it mattered, surely a note would've been fossilized with it.
Anyhow... it's an amazing place to visit!!
R. S.
Surprisingly entertaining. The museum has a wide range of exhibits, both local and from further afield. The Anglo-Saxon room with its shared history with Sutton Hoo was really interesting, and while very kid-oriented the Egyptian rooms were fascinating with some great artefacts. The stuffed animals were looking a little tired, but considering their age that's to be expected. Staff were friendly and helpful, there's a one way system in place, and hand sanitisers in most rooms, so it felt very covid-safe.
m. l.
Love this place, it's like a Warren of education
İ. A. K.
The museum is fair enough. It provides a large information about natural wildlife in Suffolk, but the history and daily life is not presented enough. There are some paintings with comparison to nowadays, it is the most simple and the most attractive part of the museum in general. Instead of exhibiting all those animals and sections from different cultures, some unique ways could be exhibited. At the end, the name of the museum is Ipswich Museum, neither British Wildlife Museum not Suffolk Birds' Museum. Naturally it is expected to see things specific to Ipswich, but that is not enough. However, the museum can study with the University of Suffolk to update itself. The university can provide a wide info about life in Ipswich such as Marina, business and daily life of Ipswich etc...
Briefly, all those huge potentials of Ipswich could not have been reflected to the Museum.
A. M.
So much to see, interesting facts and exhibits for all ages. Took our two grandchildren here ages 4 and 9 both of whom thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Covid compliant so make sure that you book a slot before you travel and adults bring your masks.
M. T.
Had a real Victorian feel, just like it should be . Excellent collection of exhibits.
A. R. c.
very interesting place, a lot of stuff to see
A. K.
Ipswich Museum nice collections in the Museum with full of knowledge.
M. M.
A great museum with huge variety of items you wouldn't expect to see in an Ipswich museum. 2-3 hours of entertainment for younger kids and adults.
M. S.
We found this hidden gem on Google and thought we would have a visit! Glad we did! Free entry for starts and loads of content! We bought the Animal Safari pack for 50p, which was great fun trying to find all the animals. It's a natural history museum with a really nice focus on Ipswich based history! Definitely worth a hour or so of your time!
S. (.
Fantastic local museum, free entry, great exhibitions and vovid secure, what's notbyp love about it.
It has animal exhibits, local history, sockets bronze age axes along with their moulds and the Ipswich holden torch as well as s huge array of other exhibits from geology to fossils and egypology.
D.
This place should remain as it is now for as long as possible because in reality it is a museum of a museum. It's like stepping back into Victorian times and visiting a museum. My grandchildren loved it.
C. D.
On a wet day this museum was definitely worth a visit. Free to enter with a donation asked for. Very interesting Victorian style exhibition of animals and extensive bird collection that were donated by local worthies at least a century ago. It had the feel of visiting early last century. Also good exhibition of local wartime memories, Egyptian exhibit with actual mummies and artifacts and then a walk through exhibits of other collections from around the world. There is more to see than I expected. Local school children were really enjoying it all.
M. B.
we only had a short time at the museum but looked really good. We were on the Elmer Elephant hunt around Ipswich and there were a herd of 22 hidden all around the museum. Will definitely go back for a better look. Very well laid out with scenes showing different eras and a large woolly mammoth greets you on entry.
P. G.
Ipswich museum is a nice place. I liked it. The variety of the contents is surprising at first, but it somehow come together when one bears in mind it's about the place. I really enjoyed the WW2 exposition, especially the gas mask for children. It felt like travel back in time and I like to time travel :) also the collection of animals is much greater than I had expected. The mammoth by the entrance make a great background for selfies! 🤳
K. R. H.
Interesting and covid safe one way system in place, small gift shop area and a toilet available with disabled access. Not a food outlet tho. Enjoyable.
C. K.
Fairly regular visitors to the museum and we usually know which areas we want to look at (normally tied in to school subjects) and head straight for them. Always good to get a photo with the mammoth 😊 and the Egyptian display is always a must see. Amazing that entry is free but please do make a contribution to support the museum if you can.
H. C.
Loved it here. Our 4 year old had a lovely time. It reminded us of hornimans museum in London
M. H.
Good fun with the children. Where's wooly egg trail.
S. F.
Wonderful and interesting local museum, though extensive displays of stuffed birds and mammals are a hark back to Victorian days.

Will always be a great place to go. Can remember going here with my grand parents as a little kid. Now I'm taking my own kids....
A. A.
I went with the family. The kids really enjoyed the museum and finding Wally. The booking system was simple and social distancing/covid measures were good. Well done to the museum!
S. K.
Bigger than it looks! Wear comfy shoes and enjoy the step back in time. Really enjoyed our visit here and would recommend
S. L.
A traditional municipal museum, with a wartime exhibition, a lot of taxidermy and the history of the town.
K. D.
Lovely place to take the children even my husband loved it
p. n.
Friendly staff. Of its time, but once past the stuffed animals, very informative about Ipswich and it's social history. Giraffe and woolly mammoth are impressive.
C. M.
Love the animal exhibits here, as does my little one. It's interesting to see how big animals are in real life. Not yet made it around the whole place but we enjoyed what we've seen. Great place to pop into especially since it's free.
C. E.
Best place to bring your family 👪
S. F.
Fantastic place to see some animals, the interactive parts of the WW2 section were great. Loved the art of the older parts of Ipswich compared to the modern part. The Anglo Saxons were a bit hidden away though bless them. But the overall experience was great!
J. G.
Fantastic museum. It's brilliant to have this richness of cultural history on our doorsteps. And FREE admission too! Open Sundays too which is particularly convenient for families. Children will love the life size Wooly Mammoth.
S. H.
Intriguing collection of stuffed animals & birds
J. C.
Free, that's right Ipswich has something that is free. This place could do with an advertising campaign. It really is a great place to go and visit, checking out some local history etc. Just the right size to keep kids entertained. Staff are really happy to help and friendly. Good museum, good job.
P. S.
Amazing selection of stuffed animals; we were surprised by just how large the collection was! Friendly guides and impressed it was free to enter. There was a range of activities for children to enjoy also.
O.
Brilliant museum and shockingly a lot bigger then i expected! Really great and varied exhibitions with the highlight of my visit being the history of Ipswich though the ages. Would defiantly visit again. Looks to be an amazing day out for children as well with plenty to see and do for all ages, I was shocked to see they even had real Egyptian sarcophagus and mummies! What a brilliant place, please go and support it!
W. R.
Kids and I enjoy the museum every visit we make. We love the Egyptian mummy in the floor and the hieroglyphics are fun to try. Also looking at all the animals in and out of the display cabinets. Great few free hours out.
T. H.
Wow wow wow, what an amazing place
S. s.
This is an amazing place to visit. The staff are always polite, friendly and extremely helpful. There is something for all ages. There was an animal activity available. Which the two teens in our group went to. Which they enjoyed. I would recommend the museum to everyone.
V. T.
Five stars, but.... Low light in some exhibitions is a easy fix... but what bugs me most is the lack of linear order, as in, there is no chronological order through the exhibition, all the areas are very good, most are excellent, but the museum could gain from connecting the various section with a historical time-line or at least divided into nature and history.
I love the Museum, have visited many times, will visit again and do recommend. This is just my attempt at constructive criticism.
H. R.
Excellent place to visit. I was surprised by the collection. My son enjoyed a lot. It's a good place to visit with young kids.
h. l.
Free with a large exhibit and lots of information
K. A.
This is a lovely museum to visit. Plenty to look at for adults and children. There are interactive things for children to do also. We spent a pleasant morning with 3 children (2 X 8 and a 5 year old). The 2 older children loved the Egyptian part (the younger child was scared of the mummy). Great to see the mummy - seen it many times since my childhood when it was in Colchester Castle. The girls were particularly taken with the Narwhal horns - they thought they were unicorn horns! The staff are very pleasant and helpful.
J. H.
Lovely children's trail for animals 50p with beautiful illustrations! We love the Egyptian area, great for children as interactive. Animal area could do with better lighting. Staff friendly and helpful
E. M.
This is a fairly typical small town museum with exhibits mostly focusing on local history from prehistoric to modern times.
What elevates it beyond similar sized/themed museums we have visited is the Ancient Egypt Section (complete with mummy) and the special CSI event that prompted our visit in the first place. The children enjoyed the interactive sleuthing required to solve the crime. And all for free!
J. A.
Great little museum with lots to see and do. Many activities throughout school holidays with little to no cost. Welcoming staff, a gift shop full of all sorts from sweets and teddy bears, to games and magbifiers. Visited and seen many exhibitions and interactive displays over the years.
H. R.
It was excellent experience. My kid loved it. He was enjoying a lot. Will recommend for kids. They have excellent collection 😉
P. B.
Fantastic little museum, have often travelled further for bigger collections but they have a great range of interesting exhibits. Great selection of taxidermy and some lovely bird displays in habitat.
A. S.
Free entry.
A local museum well worth a visit. Friendly and helpful staff.
Lots of stuffed animals from Victorian era understandably not to everyone's taste.
Wheelchair access however No access to upper floor.
K. L.
Fantastic place to visit for all ages!! Huge array of animals to see which are really astounding for the kids. It’s free too, so it’s a great place to go on a rainy day, time and time again
T. Q.
Loved it, great little hidden gem just out of the town
Staff are super lovely and helpful, very talkative too if you ask them questions about the exhibits
Brilliant place to take young children, especially if they have an interest in nature and history, would highly recommend
B.
The kids loved it and we loved from start to finish, we'll laid out and very Informative, and best of all free, highly recommended for any ages
K. S.
Lot of interesting stuff in a quite place
J. C.
Great local museum. Was a bit rushed for time so didn't see it all though have been round years ago and liked it then. Lots of exotic animals as you first walk in, including a giraffe and a rhino. Artwork and history displays too. It's tucked away a bit from the centre. Seek it out!
J. S.
Compact but each detail tells a fascinating story and is beautifully presented. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. If you are interested in Anglo Saxon weaponry go on a Sunday and ask for Tim. You can't miss him..
M. E.
Very good museum, the woolly mammoth is awesome. Wonderful place for kids
N. W.
Visiting Ipswich for the day & hadn't planned to go to the museum but so glad we did. My two girls (7 & 9) were like "museum...boring" but as soon as they saw the woolly mammoth and the giraffe they were hooked. The staff were great and there were activities for the children to do (matching the poo to the animal was a firm favourite!).
We spent around an hour and a half there and I was surprised how many exhibits there are. I could have spent longer there if on my own.
We all enjoyed ourselves and i recommend it to all.
L. B.
What a brilliant little museum! You wouldn’t suspect from the outside how many exhibits they have managed to pack in! All the animals when you walk in are laid out brilliantly and in the glass displays at the back there’s lots of drawers for you to open with more specimens in to look at. After the animal room there’s a war exhibit which could do with a spruce up as it hasn’t changed since i was a kid. The anglo saxon exhibit is pretty neat too. There’s also plenty more exhibits for you to check out, i’ll say again i’m so impressed by the amount of knowledge they’ve packed into the place! Would definitely recommend taking a trip down there, and bring the kids too!
V. H.
Great place to visit friendly staff
H. P.
A wonderful place to spend a few hours. Several galleries full of taxidermy, the mammoth, rhino and giraffe bring the biggest while upstairs there are hundreds of birds presented their habitats. The Egyptians, Romans and Saxons are also covered well.
D. D.
For a free musem very well done
M. S.
XIX century at its best. Animals, egyptians and world cultures well described.
E. S.
Fab museum full of really well maintained items. Much more than expected too. A place you can go back to again and again. Plus the art museum is next door too. Perfect for a culture fix for young and old.
S. S.
A great stop for a family. Nice collection of animals, especially local birds. Good geology exhibition, very good and child friendly Egypt themed section. My children love it and frequently ask to come back.
R. H.
My boy loves it and we come here most times we visit Nanny.
D. M.
Was recommended to visit this museum, its a lovely place to visit
L. G.
So much to see in such a limited space.
Beautiful building and friendly staff.
Difficult to find parking nearby
S. W.
The museum is an exhibit in itself by retaining its original Victorian presentation. The anthropology section and relatively new Egyptian rooms are impressive. The only weak part is the massive underlit stuffed bird section at the rear. Piles and piles of cases display one man's hoard from Suffolk and Scotland (?) Some information on the British mammal section are incorrect: hare hunting and coursing are not legal today. But overall this is very impressive local museum ideal for shortish family visits, self-educators, and local historians.
D. M.
Great place!
Highly recommend
J. E.
Live this museum. And my daughter has So much fun here. Good day out and is free!!
D. I.
Fantastic afternoon out and it's free
W. S.
A great little museum. Packed full of general history as well as a heap of info from the local area. Nice few hands on bits for the children as well. Plenty to keep your interest for a couple of hours. Plus it's free!
M. H.
Great place to visit, so much to see, great information about Ipswich and all that's happened here, look forward to visiting again!
N. M.
This is a top rate museum with plenty for everybody to discover.
Those complaining that the interior needs a bit of a refresh do not realise this is all part of the atmosphere.
Ipswich Town Council can rightly be proud of this jewel in the crown and well done to all the staff ... past and present.
My only disappointment was when I lived in Bristol many years ago, I could visit the zoo and have a ride on Rosie the elephant, but Wool.i.am the mammoth wasn't giving any rides on the day I visited - he is getting a bit old though.
E. L.
Great old fashioned museum of natural history ( feels like stepping into 1900- loved it!)
B. M.
Very good.
W. K.
The Ipswich Museum has the look of a 19th century museum, and while it has been modernized, it retains classic grandeur. Very enjoyable, very large, and a very friendly staff. I hope to return soon!
(Also worth mentioning, this massive museum is entirely free!)
M. W.
Brilliant place to visit, my kids loved speaking to the staff. The gentleman dressed as an Anglo Saxon was great and spent loads of time listening too and answering all the questions that my kids had.
P. P.
Have always loved Ipswich museum, its a proper old school Victorian type museum but with newer exhibitions being added
K. R.
Went here a couple weeks back, very nice fact filled museum, they operate a good system to comply with covid measures
S. T.
Good, one way route was clearly marked and easy to follow, lots of information and a big variety of exhibits.
G. L.
Despite the small space the collection of animals was huge, and a decent amount of history and artifacts showcased on the top floor.
S. H.
What a fantastic resource. I loved it.
S. S.
Great place, with lots of exhibits. We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
P. P.
Absolutely love it here! Hadn't been for nearly 30yrs, went when I was little with my grandparents. Soon as I walked in it all came flooding back. Lots to look at and learn about. A total gem of a place.
R. M.
Lots of local history as well as worldwide, very interesting to my 2 year old son who especially loves the rhino! Friendly, helpful staff who welcome us eagerly every visit.
Z. T.
Great place to take visitors to Ipswich.
N. B.
Amazing find. Very friendly staff and surprising amount of interesting exhibits. Not massive, but nicely compact. Kept 6 year old son amused for a long time.
B. G.
Great victorian museum which retains much of its charm and brilliant timeline upstairs detailing the town's history. Could do with a grant to freshen up some displays and bring in a bit more modern technology such as interactive screens - however hope they keep the main downstairs hall in its victorian appearance.
C. P.
Good, free place to take the kiddies! They love going here and having a potter around. Only down side is it has a little old gloomy feel to it.......but it's free.......sooooooo......all good !
G. M.
A fantastic museum that has brilliant exhibits, a full sized giraffe and an intimidating mammoth, plus lots of ancient Egyptian artifacts, and a great feature on life in the 2nd World War, go visit it ,you'll find much more to interest young and old alike.
J. W.
Small museum.Very interesting for all ages . Well worth the effort to visit.
J.
Really cool time out so much history
Art gallery next door was great too.
S. C.
A thoroughly ridiculous piece of Victorian history with an enormous collection of stuffed animals. Have added some really interesting additional collections around indigenous people and WW2 as well as a great hoard of coins!
Y.
Worth going, a lot to see, our 9yrs old enjoyed the time there
K. M.
Who doesn't love Ipswich museum! I really enjoyed the historic stuffed animals as it's a part of the history of the UK and Ipswich. Informative on a local level and the newish Egyptian bit is great.
S. T.
Hidden Gem for free people..... Go and visit.. Great covering of all eras....
R. E.
Great place to go, took two seven year old, who loved it. Your not rushed round, you go at your own pace and be there as long as you like. Plus it's free. Please note it is closed on Monday
M. C.
Excellent museum with a wide variety of interesting materials. I particularly liked the Inuit kayak and other artefacts - amazing! More should be made of the fact that John Stevens Henslow was the scond President of the Museum. The portrait of him on the stairs is very hard to view. Henslow was the man who recommended Darwin for the naturalist's post on the Beagle - after he himself had turned it down!
M. H.
Absolutely fascinating museum, incredible range of creatures and exhibits. A bit of a hidden gem and definitely underrated. Kids adored it too.
P. D.
In this day and age to find a free museum is wonderful. Spent a good couple of hours here. Staff very friendly. Well worth a visit.
L. H.
Bloody brilliant! My children and I were blown away by this place. I feel proud that at least some of my taxes are going towards the upkeep of this museum. I would thoroughly recommend everyone goes here.
P. E.
Staff very helpful. Interesting exhibits and objects something for every generation.
A. S.
Free entry, generally there are interesting exhibitions that come to town. Permanent exhibitions are of a high standard and enjoyable for all age ranges.
R. L. F.
The children and I love this place lots to see and do, on all sorts 9f interests, great exhibits, welcoming staff and just the right size.
C. N.
Took my son. Lots to see
A. A.
Brilliant really interesting. Well laid out. Impressive well worth a visit
D. Y.
Really great displays, lived in Ipswich for 3 years and never realised how much was in there. Good morning out with kids looking at all the animal displays.
K. D.
Excellent displays especially for families. Accessibility is a little challenging but staff are excellent
P. C.
This poor old museum really hasn't changed much since I was a kid, it kept my boys entertained for an hour or so, the place could really do with relocating to more modern well suited premises where it would attract more of a crowd.
m. S.
Ipswich museum contains artifacts covering a wide range of topics, focused very much on local history. Great for school trips and rainy days visits.
C. W.
Small but very lovely place to visit
J. B.
Great experience with the kids, learning about history and prehistoric animals,no entry fee which is a blessing these days, really is worth a trip to ipswich to have a look especially if the weather isn't great, definitely recommend to friends.
P. C.
Awesome "old school" museum. Packed full of stuffed animals and facintating displays. Well stocked shop. Kids love it! And free!
J. C.
Great place, alot of taxidermy, mummies and more! Was bigger than I expected, well worth a visit
B. A.
I went recently to view the charming little exhibition of the work of 'Smallfilms'. Who? Let me list some of their work: Noggin The Nog. The Pogles. Ivor The Engine. Bagpuss. The Clangers. All should now be clear. It was fascinating to see the real puppets from shows that I loved fifty odd years ago in person. They usually say that if you meet your heroes you will be disappointed, don't they? But not here. Viewing these beautifully made models and drawings, you are filled with admiration for the work of two men - Oliver Postgate, and Peter Firmin, who, with infinite patience, made steel armatures covered with foam and cloth and fur, and bits of (beautifully) painted card into some of the warmest, most beloved television of all time, and not just for children: there is more than a hint of darkness in all of it, and nuances that children watching would never get, but dad or mum sitting next to them would. Not bad work for two men working out of converted farm buildings, and getting composer Vernon Eliott to create singularly odd but beautiful music for each show. Just seeing the original title card for 'The Clangers' brought me out in goosebumps. Not of fear, but deeper than that: the beloved memory. An exhibit I was surprised to see, was the crow-like and deeply sinister witch from the original 'Pogles' series. The episodes she appeared in were broadcast once, and once only, due to the number of mums who rang the BBC to say that it had terrified their children. I sought out and watched the episodes recently, and I have to say that yes, it was definitely too dark for children. I urge you to see this exhibition, but hurry! It's not on for much longer. If, like me, you're of a certain age, it'll give you a warm, fuzzy feeling. The kids will like it as there are things to play with, and films to watch. Entry is free.
M. H.
There isn't many places you can go with the family for free! Even the younger children who fly around looking at this and that still spend a good hour and half enjoying the exhibits.
J. A.
A large and detailed museum with pretty much all you needed to learn about Ipswich. With everything from the oldest artifacts from the region to contemporary pieces from an Ipswich-er's life, this is a really fully-stocked museum with pretty much everything from the history of the town.
M. Q.
Loads to look at but nothing interactive for the younger kids. I've probably been spoilt by the London museums but it's good for an hour or so for the family to be entertained.
j. m.
Interesting place, small but whit plenty history
S. K.
Fantastic museum! So much packed into a small space! Lovely staff and child friendly displays 🙂

Nice place and feels exactly what you would expect from a museum- musty smells and lots of collections from around the area and other relics on show. It's a shame it hasn't had a spruce up in over a decade mind!
