Reviews of Old John Tower
C. C.
It makes for very lovely photos, you can't go inside it but that didn't matter too much to us. It stands at the top of a hilly slope so almost acts as a viewing platform from you can see a lot of the park below you.
B. A.
A historiacal monument of high interest. The view from here, overseeing Cropton & surrounding areas is breathtaking. The climb here though, not for the faint hearted. Go with lots of energy boosters! This is a perfect location for adventure junkies. Perfect for hickers!
S. F.
Beautiful walk up and the view is gorgeous. Was very nice to visit on a cold Monday morning as it was very quiet and peaceful.
B. C.
Great park to visit, cyclists could slow down more around pedestrians. Dogs must be kept on leads.
S. W.
Fantastic Tower, I do photography so a great addition, well worth a visit, highly recommended,
B. B.
Always a nice place to go always deer in the area and a good walk this part of Bradgate Park usually not as busy as the Newtown Linford car park.
P. K.
Great place to visit and have a good walk. Plenty of paths to explore. I parked at the memorial carpark and walked to Newtown linford for a ice-cream. Walking back is up hill.
A. D.
With views like this, however long it takes you to get to the top it's worth it. Check the website for opening times of the tower so you're not disappointed. Swithland Wood car park is closest to Old John if you struggle to move like myself.
G. B.
Great views for miles around. Beautiful park with walking and plenty to.see
E. d. C.
Amazing hike!
Looking forward to return
j. t.
Excellent place recommend to visit on evenings .
R. B.
We love the walk up to Old Jhon Tower. It's fantastic whatever time of year, particularly spectacular when the leaves are turning putting on a vibrant display. Parking is expensive, I wish there was another stay price at weekend's.
F. R.
Beautiful spot to hike and have a good family time
g. c.
Historical and peaceful, well worth the effort to walk to, you can see nearly all of Leicester from the top.
E. D. B.
It was my first day hiking today and I simply loved it. I want to return there and explore more of it. So much to see
S. H.
Great view almost all around.
M. F.
Great area to go walking, there are options of more or less challenging paths to take depending on health and ability.
S. H.
We had a wonderful time walking up the hill to the tower. The views all around are picturesque especially with the fallow deer so close. The kids loved rolling down the hill, we didn't get a chance to enjoy the cafe but will stop there next time we visit.
J. B.
It's a gruelling walk up the hill to Old John Tower but the sights around the area are fantastic - you'll be glad for the rest to take it all in.
Inside Old John is a little disappointing though, it's basically a white room with 3 windows overlooking bradgate and a fireplace. Oh and it's full of ladybirds! So while inside the tower isn't much to write home about, the walk and views are.
J. S.
Lovely place to visit set in Bradgate Park you may see wild deer they roam the hillside. The views are breathtaking great variety of walks around the park suitable for the whole family.
P. S.
A lovely place to visit, great views. And you can go inside the tower on Thursday afternoons.
D. W.
Beautiful park with deer to see, brooks to paddle in, ruins to explore and other interesting features and finds. Children love climbing on the rocks. Beware the parking rangers, they are either not very bright, or, just vindictive.
G. K.
What an amazing place for a walk! If you visiting this place is a must!
S. K.
Great place to walk, very peaceful and quiet to roam around at leisure. Plenty of deer and cheap parking (£4) until dusk everyday.
H. G.
Fabulous folly really enjoy visiting it.
V. B.
Our favourite place! A great place to walk around and explore old ruins with your dog/family. Deer everywhere which makes for a magical experience for the little ones as does having a paddle in the stream in the summer. You can see for miles if you reach old John or the monument. There's ice cream kiosks open at the entrance on sunny days and dog friendly pubs close by for a bit of Sunday lunch before/after a long walk around the park. Parking is the only downside, it can be a bit expensive depending upon how long you intend to stay but proceeds do go towards the park upkeep as it's free entry. Well worth a visit on a sunny Sunday - also great for sledging after heavy snowfall - kids love it!
A. W.
Loved it a brilliant hike and lovely scenery definitely worth a visit if you haven't been
J. W.

K. K.
Picturesque place. Thanks God someone placed these comfortable boulders along the way up, so we could take some rest.
C. B.
Perhaps the single best location in Leicestershire. Peaceful with some great views.
B. S.
Great place for a walk, jog, cycle, run, take dog for a walk. Best to go early morning to smell the fresh air and see the countryside for miles, plus there are wild dear, peacocks and other wild life. Great family place.
S. A. F.
Highest point in Bradgate Park. Worth the climb for the view
L. M.
Great outdoor space last time we went we saw a green woodpecker hunting for food and the deer rutting before xmas was fantastic .
L. T.
Great place for a walk for the whole family. Take the dog and walk the paths starting from the highest hill in Bradge Park.
S. D.
Lovely location with spectacular panoramic views of the whole region. I would recommend sensible shoes, as some areas can be a bit uneven. Some areas can be steep to, so might recommend loaning a dog who pulls, to help ease the inclines. Well worth it at the top.
J. T.
Set a top in the beautiful Bradgate Park. What a lovely place to spend the day, acres of natural parkland with roaming deer, old castle ruins. Lady Jane Grey who was Queen for a few days lived here..Climb up, well walk up to old John a relic from the past. See the spectacular views from the top. Also visit the war monument which is a few Yards away. Then stroll down again and visit the cafe situated there. Also try an ice-cream from the ice-cream bike in the middle of park or the van in car park. Best ice-cream I've tasted in years. Car parking available.
H. F.
A beautiful view on 1st January from Old John Tower.
N. B.
Amazing place any time of day and always something different to see everytime you visit, definitely one of Leicestershire's finest treasures! 😁👌🏼😍📷
S. C.
Great day out with Janet Castleton and our dogs
D. P.
Good tour in the Tower and finally got to see inside it.
M. K.
Great place to visit with the family, able to find space and a quiet picnic spot even on a busy weekend..
D. J.
great views well worth a visit
C. B.
Bit of a hike! But pleasant park land with deer too!
G. S.
So close to the city but just another world. Fresh air and outdoor space. Great for strolling.
D. Y.
A great little hill, easily reachable from Hunters car park, but one which offers far reaching views including of Leicester. Bradgate Park in which it sits offers numerous walks and plenty of fresh air. Well worth visiting.
C. V.
Great historical Tower with Fantastic views over Leicestershire.
N. W.
Great walk out and very well kept grounds
S. B.
Old John is the most recognisable landmark in Leicestershire and can be seen from quite a distance away.
It's rarely open to the public but most people go to it for the views of the surrounding park and countryside. (And the hideous site that is Leicester City Centre a few miles away... Well, maybe not for that)
S. N.
Amazing place for walking and seeing Deer plenty places for a picnic
R. M.
A fantastic park set in 850 acres. Deer everywhere and wonderful ancient oaks
C. M.
Beautiful place good 4 hour walk
Deer 🦌 everywhere and trees and water great i recommend it
S. T.
Very nice walk today around Bradgate park and old john. Hetty enjoyed it this is her at the top of Old John.
A. C.
Great place to visit where deer roam free
S. T.
Nice couple of hours walk. Car parking expensive
A. W.
Great views and a good place to visit with dogs or kids for walks and some fresh air.
Good level of parking (pay and display).
b. m.
First time on top of this hill. Views are wide ranging and, although the weather was not great, they are well worth the trek up.
D. S.
Beautiful walk upto old john tower.
Walking in Bradgate park with the deer roaming free.👍
A. A.
There is no place like Old John. 360° views of beautiful Leicestershire, feels like the top of the world. It's awesome to sit and feel the breeze in one's hair, makes one feel alive and in touch with the elements. Peaceful and calming, a place to be at one with the universe, loose oneself in thought and find solace. A wonderful place to contemplate life and the planet.
p. s.
Nice walk up a little hilly landscape. But the views are lovely and to have deer roaming around you is an extra bonus. Nice place to have a morning or afternoon walk.the cafe is perfect to a stop point in the middle of the main path to have a rest and a must is the homemade cakes they sell. If you want a pleasant walk in the country without going all out country hiking then this place is perfect.
J.
Great view
a. f.
Absolutely great day out exploring with the kids, wife and dog. Due to social distancing people were keeping.there distance. The cafe was open but outside tables only all placed a good distance apart. Ordering was done at one window and picked up at the next, just like your favourite fast food restaurant drive thru.
J. T.
First time inside the tower during excellent 6 hour guided Ramble with a Ranger
J.
Amazing views, especially on a good clear day.
P. H.
Love walking the dogs up to Old John. Fantastic views!
D. M.
Great place good walk
J. E.
Nice exercise getting up that hill if your having a day out in beautiful bradgate park. Well worth taking a look for the 360 views
I. S.
Great park as there are no walking restrictions Old john has it's own car park and superb views, like most people who were born here, i've been going here since the sixties the place is timeless ,deer ,ducks ,and miles of greenery, for those who are fit choose old john car park ,for people with mobility problems the bottom car park offers a paved walk with babbling river near by .
Take a slow walk good conversation with family and friends is a must, can't think of a better way to waste a couple of hours, plus the benefit of a great night sleep to boot.
T. S.
Iconic landmark. Great views. Beautiful day. Park can get very busy, but move away from the main paths and there are areas of peace and quiet. Plenty of places to eat and drink and the little museum is well worth a visit.
T. N.
Good little hike with rewarding views!!!
D. L.
Good trek, cardio mission but it's hella worth it for the views and helps clear your mind. We're so lucky to have this spot in Leicestershire.
C. H.
Great park and amazing views from here.
Y. V.
Excellent scenery. Beautiful views all round. A great walk too. Free roaming deer in the park. Could easily spend a whole day and still be left wanting more. Shame about the no barbecues rule, but apart from that, a great park.
A. H. (.
Beautifully scenic. If you're looking for a place to take a long walk and fresh air, or just looking to escape the noise of the city I'd throughly recommend a visit here. Be sure to bring your walking boots as it can be a bit muddy. There are even wild deer roaming the area which are a fantastic sight
E. R.
Bradgate Park is the jewel in the Crown of Leicestershire
R. M.
A wonderful sunny, but cold day. Our first visit since we laft Leicester 45 years ago.

R. H.
It's roughly a miles walk to the top but what amazing views you get for your effort. If you live within an hour's drive please pack a picnic. Drove down and experience the breath taking views
C. M.
Great views of sunsets ☀️
s. c.
A perfect local walk to watch the sun rise
m. j.
Fantastic day great views
r. h.
Lovely views from the top, you can see for miles around. There is not a pathed path which can make it difficult for buggies and wheel chairs. The scenery is outstanding.
Y. A.
Always a great place to visit. Beautiful scenery and wild deer to be seen.
T. A. M.
Must visit place
H.
On a sunny day you can see forever. Lots of deer and fresh air but unless its FREEZING or super dry you should always wear suitable boots. It's muddy and slippery after even the smallest bit of rain.
A. M.
Good views from the top- in a cloud free day.
M. E.
I love Bradegate Park and from Old John you get a lovely view for miles and miles.
L.
Old John was open on Sunday and it was amazing to go in and speak to people about its history x
D. B.
A great day out for all the family
k. g.
One of my most favourite places 😁
D. A.
beautiful country park with so much history of leicester, at old john you can see for miles across the countryside with a distance dial showing direction and distance to key places in the uk, i remember seeing this for the first time as a child with my parents explaining it to me and now at 48 years old i still love to look at the views and distances! be careful with small children as there are a couple of long falls from rocks as its set on top of an extinct volcano. if you stamp on the ground on the way up you can hear the resonance of the lava chambers, something i loved showing my kids as my parents shown me! take a camera to the top on a sunny day!
N. M.
Fantastic views, well worth the climb
A. R.
Wonderful place to visit. Here's a shadow of the Tower and the long reaching view.
S. C.
Lovely views from the top of Old John.
M. M.
Great views when you finally reach the top. Definitely worth a visit.
M. H.
Great views ...spend 10 minutes gathering your breath and then trying to find which direction your house is in. Bradgate is definitely one of the, if not the best Leicester parks.
S. M.
Folly set on a hill in Bradgate Park, couple of urban myths surrounding it. In 50 years I've seen the door open but once. The park as a whole is developing, which has taken most of my life. Still a beautiful place to visit.
J. S.
Nice view. Good place to spend few hours with kids.
M. S.
Situated in the most beautiful and historical parks. Old John is based right at the top of Bradgate park and boasts incredibly rich views of the surrounding countryside as well as the city of Leicester.
J. N.
Well worth a visit, views are brilliant.
s. T.
Loved it, although the walk up is tough sometimes it's always a lovely view and u feel so good after climbing that huge hill
M. J.
Breath taking views. Yet to go inside always seem to miss the viewing days. If you love the countryside I'd highly recommend visiting.
C. C.

A. E.
Lovely walk.
S. J.
Great place for a stroll with the family or tackle the hills for something more strenuous.
J. B.
Folly in Bradgate Park. There's some fairly good easy walking around this side of the park. It's not accessible to scooters or children's bikes in the same way as the central Newton entrance. Nearest thing I've found in Leicestershire to moorland 😁
J. P.
This was a great hike to do with a 7 year old. Just far enough to make it a challenge. And the allure of ice cream just outside the park!
J. G.
You can see this tower from Pork Pie roundabout which is miles away. Great views and love walking at Bradgate Park during the summer months.
N. W.
It's one of the most beautiful place to visit in the country. It's a piece of countryside paradise in tour own back yard almost
W.
I usually walk my dog around bradgate park and up the hill to old john. Great views and a good tourist attraction, one of the great sights of Leicestershire
U. S.
We can have good view of the farms and houses beside the park. This place is so refreshing.
J. K.
wind swept and wonderful. Bradgate Park is where you will find the old stone tower. Lots of open space with country walks and deer running wild.
T. F.

You wouldn't believe the crowds that are here on Christmas Day! Nonetheless, the views from the top on a clear sunny morning were quite impressive, though it has since clouded over.
G. D.
